Abstract Built elements and structures are a prominent component of our historic gardens, both in terms of function and artistic composition and garden scenery. The surveys of historic garden structures are important research tasks, which also underpins and validates restoration work. In most cases, the neglected state of historic gardens and sites and the unavailable archival materials do not allow an authentic restoration of historic gardens to their original state. Nevertheless, there is a real need to reconstruct our historic gardens, based not only on historical authenticity but also on a systematic reinterpretation of the relationship between society and landscape. The objective of this article is to present a general methodology for renewal of historic gardens through examples of specific garden reconstructions. The case studies are the authors' own design works, which demonstrate the application of different design approaches, highlighting details of the reconstruction of specific built garden elements.

Streszczenie:
The renewal of historic gardens, landscapes, and sites has grown to be a current issue in Central and Eastern Europe. Based on scientific research, the Department of Garden Art of the Szent István University, Faculty of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism has been dealing with landscape renewal since 1963 on regional, settlement, and garden scales, too. More than 50 years of experience has already proved the advantage of such a research-based design approach in garden and landscape renewal processes, Landscape Architecture has developed from a very practical basis. The purpose of this paper is to show the most significant conclusions of our historic garden research of castle gardens from the Carpathian Basin, focusing on the importance of visual connections designed initially on the sites. Using case studies, the paper intends to explore how proper landscape design in historic environments is achieved. The historical value cannot be simplified or understood as the notion of “old”, the heritage being represented by the all-time valuable garden features and elements, independent from their formation in time. In addition to the historical authenticity of the actual use, the social needs and sustainability are important aspects, which must be integrated into heritage protection and reclamation.

Precedent historic styles were analysed and recovered by historicist revisionism and revivalism during the nineteenth century. The lack of a style of its century lead to eclecticism, a trend that involved a merging of diverse ornamental repertories. Accordingly, eclectic garden design employed historic styles of different origins. As the cities grew, suburban gardens were integrated within the urban sprawl. The Monforte Gardens in Valencia represent a relevant case study characteristic of nineteenth century major garden design and development transformations. Most significant are the design resources and strategies introduced in the original design by Sebastián Monléon and, subsequently by Javier de Winthuysen as this research —including a thorough redrawing of the garden layout— gives evidence of. The Monforte Gardens represent an eclectic urban gardening design example in which the different parts maintain their independence without losing an overall unitary concept. Although traditionally considered neoclassical gardens, this research argues they should be properly considered as eclectic romantic gardens.

The historic garden should be considered one that has cultural significance, being not only the squares and public gardens, but also its first manifests found in the form of orchard garden and vegetable garden in the historic farms of Brazil. Traituba’s Farm located in southern Minas Gerais, on the Royal Road route, is considered an important historical farm that emerged in the eighteenth century during the settlement process of this region. It was in the same period, that current rural landscape from southern Minas Gerais, composed of several other historic farms and the historic rural gardens began their formation process. The aim of this study was to conduct a historical and cultural rescue of the gardens and landscapes of the Traituba’s Farm. With this rescue, characterize and analyze their landscapes in their different ages, as well as identify and understand the main morphological changes of its gardens included in the architectural complex of the farm. This study focused on the period between 1725 and 2013. To trace the historical, cultural and landscape evolution, it was made researches through site visits, interviews, bibliographic and iconographic research, always following the principles of studies of historic gardens. Traituba’s Farm since its formation was always a region icon, because of its wealth, power and intense trade. Its landscapes have undergone many changes and are characterized initially as a pastoral model, then the bucolic and picturesque style, after the construction of the new farmhouse. With the decline of its activities, decades later the model that remained was the picturesque and pastoral as its origin. For a long time, its gardens were presented as orchards gardens and vegetable gardens with utilitarian characteristics, influenced by the Portuguese culture. Just in 1950s the front yard received a significant intervention and new species were planted where that the design can be seen until today. The significance of this paper is due to the historical value of the Traituba’s Farm, the magnificence of its architectural ensemble, peculiarity of gardens and landscapes, and great cultural representation in the region

PurposeThis paper aims to provide an exploratory investigation into contemporary interpretation methods used in historic gardens and their fundamental role in enhancing the visitor experience and sense of a place.Design/methodology/approachA series of semi-structured interviews (n= 65) with Wrest Park visitors – who had the opportunity to experience new interpretation methods provided on-site – have been carried out in an attempt to explore their sense of place through interpretation.FindingsThe research suggests that interpretation has a fundamental role to play in “telling the story” of historic gardens, with 92.5 per cent of the sample understanding elements of the place’s history, significance and evolution. The findings further suggest the presence of two distinct visitor typologies – history explorers and leisure seekers.Practical implicationsThe study provides implications for theory and practice and recommendations for historic garden practitioners.Originality/valueThe importance of conceptualising and operationalising interpretation in historic gardens has received relatively little attention across the extant body of heritage interpretation literature. English Heritage’s Wrest Park, which is amongst England’s most prominent historic gardens, is used as a case study.

Historic gardens are important parts of humanity’s built heritage within the designed landscape, providing many environmental, economic and socio-cultural benefits. Management is a key part of their conservation, perhaps the most difficult because it is costly, must be continual, and requires a skilled workforce. This systematic review looks at the literature addressing historic garden management, with special attention regarding the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. Academic studies on this subject come from many different disciplines, making it both stimulating and fragmented. It is now time to consolidate these interdisciplinary efforts into a clear vision, including a framework of key themes and research methods so as to better coordinate efforts and make the information and innovation generated more accessible to the garden managers “in the trenches”. With this aim, reviewed studies are classified according to 10 criteria: supply or demand orientation; management phase involved; primary sustainability processes addressed; geographic criteria; number of sites covered; policy documents referred to; kind of data collected; study methods employed; possibility of bias specifically regarding historic gardens; garden use. An analysis of these criteria shows that historic garden management literature focuses on describing the gardens themselves, with few studies interested in the people supporting them. Future research should follow recent policy documents’ lead and pay more attention to community value and involvement.

The Traditional Chinese Private Garden is a historically and socially significant landscape type that features multiple complex planning elements. Whereas there are many different examples of Traditional Chinese Private Gardens, the small gardens of Suzhou make up a distinct subset. This paper describes a method for mathematically capturing and then parametrically generating, new instances of what might be called the small ‘Suzhou type’, which features some of the same social and cognitive spatial properties as the historic cases. The research commences with a mathematical analysis of three historic Suzhou Traditional Chinese Private Gardens before using connectivity graphs to investigate their properties. Mathematical measurements derived from the Traditional Chinese Private Gardens are then used as rules for a parametric system to generate new instances of the Suzhou type. In the paper, three new Suzhou type connectivity and spatio-typological systems are generated and tested against the properties of the historic cases. Through this process, the paper demonstrates a method for capturing distinct social and cognitive properties in a parametric system and thereby derives possible new insights into these important heritage sites. This method may also be applied to the analysis and generation of different spatial types.

Abstract Historical gardens in Egypt witnessed and narrated not only stories of momentous events and influencing dignitaries, but also they hosted rare plants and astonishing architecture. Nowadays, such rich history is losing its identity, which is pragmatic to retain, especially with high rates of urbanization and globalization. Thus, this research focuses on the issue of place identity, as it investigates the impact of socio-economic, political, and spatial forces on formulating the identity of historic gardens in metropolitan cities. Additionally, the research addresses the debate between preserving the garden identity versus approving its evolving.. “Orman Garden” is selected, a historic botanical garden in Cairo City, Egypt, to examine the transformation of its identity starting from 1873 till 2019. Research methods include historical researches, a field survey, and interviews with the garden administration staff, current users, and users from old generations. Results declare that the socio-economic forces are the most profound forces behind identity reconfiguring / transformation. Furthermore, the study differentiated between components that were subjected to disfiguration or evolution. The research concludes with recommendations to conserve and revive the lost historical identity while facing current challenges and embracing new demands and trends.

Streszczenie:
La Casa Blanca (The White House) is the old fortress house of Juan Ponce de Leon’s family, located in the city of San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico also known as Old San Juan. The house was originally built in the early 1500s as one of the first permanent constructions on the islet of San Juan. Both the house and its grounds have undergone several physical changes through their almost 500 years of existence. The house (which today is a museum) has been restored and documented, including the surrounding buildings which were built during the 17th and 18th Centuries and which form the Casa Blanca building complex.Today several garden areas exist on the grounds of Casa Blanca. These gardens have the potential to enhance the site more than they do presently, not only in the aesthetic experience that the visitor to Casa Blanca could have because of the beauty of the place, but also in the experience of history and legend associated with Juan Ponce de Leon.Lamentably, with the possible exception of the Hispano-Moorish garden located next to the central patio of Casa Blanca, the remaining garden areas have not been formally documented for purposes of correct design development or so that the visitor may appreciate and understand their history. In this creative project the author has documented all the information available on Casa Blanca and its gardens from written sources, plans, and from oral interviews obtained in Puerto Rico and the United States. The original intent of the author was not only to document the gardens and grounds of Casa Blanca, but also to create a restoration/rehabilitation design for the best use of this area. This scheme would be in accordance with their historic, legendary, and aesthetic relationship to Casa Blanca and Old San Juan as part of the total cultural heritage of Puerto Rico. Instead, this research of Casa Blanca's gardens' history in itself became the focus of the creative project due to the large amount of time and effort necessary to locate and compile the information. A rehabilitation design plan was not possible in the time frame for this project. However, this investigation opened new areas of study, as it dealt with the overall unrecorded garden history of Puerto Rico which was essential to document before a restoration/rehabilitation plan could be made. The author hopes that this study, as the first documentation of a Puerto Rican garden, will initiate the recording of the total garden history of Puerto Rico.

This thesis describes a method which was formed to deal with the assignment of design study of “Lin An Tai Historical Home” adaptation. The site is located in Taipei (Taiwan) and was chosen to become a part of Flower Expo 2010/11 exposition area. The method is based on research on traditional Chinese garden principles considering Taiwanese characteristics. Whole work is divided into three parts. Part I introduces Chinese gardens from historical evolution through description of individual elements to general analysis of typical layouts. Consequently, common devices applied in design process of classical gardens are explained. Examples of private gardens remarked in the text complete the image of infinite variety of Chinese gardens which evolved during ages. Part II is focused on Taiwanese gardens. Historical perspective is followed by specification of differences in relation to Chinese gardens originals. Finally, two contemporary Taiwanese public gardens built in traditional style are presented. The Nan Yuan(South Garden) in Hsinchu County and Chih Shan Yuan adjacent to National Palace Museum in Taipei. Application of elements and approach of design are discussed in regard to traditional Chinese garden principles. Part III explains the design method and the design study of “Lin An Tai Historical Home” itself. The design method was developed to deal with the Flower expo assignment together with complex system of various conditions related to the site. Two types of requirements going one against the other were necessary to be fitted together. The first type was related to the exposition purposes. The site is expected to serve for thousands of visitors, thus implementation of open public spaces was inevitable. The second type was on the contrary connected to the Lin An Tai historical compound. Style of the whole plot was assumed to remind classical private house and garden. To solve these contradictory requirements, principles described in Part I were followed. To obtain the best results, the site was analysed together with its neighbourhood. Treatment of revealed elements which cannot be altered, like the concrete body of neighbour freeway or the sluice road on nearby river, became important factors for further design process. Traditional techniques like space dividing, planning of touring routes, positioning of viewing spots and vistas, etc., were applied in the site arrangement. System of walking galleries and pavilions made the site accessible and enjoyable in all weathers and system of lantern lighting even at night. Vegetation plan was prepared chiefly focused on local Taiwanese or domesticated species. Whole design can be characterized as an experimental work where traditional Chinese garden principles were followed while modern time requirements and local specifics were incorporated.

Bruges, middle of the 15th century. Anselm Adornes, scion of a rich patrician family, creates a magnificent domain in the heart of the city : an elegant mansion, beautiful gardens, several charitable almshouses and the spectacular Chapel of Jerusalem. It is a place that every right-minded resident of Bruges and every tourist must see. The history of the Adornes domain is truly remarkable, remaining in the unbroken possession of the same family for six centuries. It has survived storms and setbacks, the secularism of the French Revolution, the fury of two world wars and inevitable periods of disinterest. 'In this book Véronique Lambert allows us to share in the hopes and fears, joys and sorrows, trials and tribulations that mark the milestones in the Adornes family saga. Within the boundaries of historical interpretation and based on extensive research, she unfolds a fascinating tale of ambitious adventurers, charismatic personalities, flamboyant lords and ordinary mortals, but each imbued with the family's traditional willpower and energy'. Let yourself be enchanted by this fascinating piece of our cultural heritage, which deserves to be more widely known.

The Gardens, Edinburgh is a group of five artefacts – consisting of three folios of drawings, a set of paper objects in a wedge-shaped box, and a publication made from linen. It was produced as an investigation into the history of the Royal Scottish Academy and the adjacent Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh, and originally exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2015. The output was commissioned by Visual Art Scotland 2015, for their annual exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy. It combines drawings, paper folding techniques and digital printing with historical and contextual research to investigate two key aspects of the site: first, the development of the linen industry in Scotland during the eighteenth century; second, the layout of the gardens, particularly the relation between the formal design arrangements and the growth of indigenous plants that infiltrate planned spaces. These interests tie into Hyslop’s longstanding research into the social and industrial history of Scotland and its impact on the land. Works from the exhibition were purchased and exhibited by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the National Library of Scotland.

This handbook presents a broad sampling of current historical scholarship on Shakespeare’s period that it is hoped will prove useful to scholars of his poems and plays. Rather than attempting to summarize the historical ‘background’ to Shakespeare, individual chapters explore numerous topics and methodologies at the forefront of current historical research. An initial cluster shows how political history has expanded beyond a traditional focus on relations between Crown and Parliament to encompass attention to attempts by the government to manage opinion; military challenges; problems in subduing Ireland and mediating relations between the British kingdoms; and the interplay between national affairs and local factions and concerns. Additional chapters deal with relationships between intellectual culture and political imagination, with detailed attention to varieties of early modern historical thought and the emergence of a ‘public sphere’. Other contributors examine facets of religious and social history, including scriptural translation, concepts of the devil, cultural attitudes concerning honour, shame and emotion, and life in London. A final section deals with vernacular architecture, Renaissance gardens, visual culture and theatrical music.

Are today’s sustainable cities built on their own undoing? This book uncovers the hidden costs of sustainable policies and practices in an era of hyper-gentrification. From state-of-the-art parks to rooftop gardens, LEED-certified buildings, bike lanes, and organic shops and restaurants, industrial waterfronts are transforming into eco-friendly urban oases. But how sustainable is this green wave? Will it lift all boats? In New York City, Melissa Checker finds that sustainable initiatives have fostered resource-intensive, high-end development in some areas and left others overburdened with polluting facilities and under-protected from climate change. Checker weaves together ethnographic and historic detail to tell the story of local activists who struggle to improve the environmental health of their neighborhoods while maintaining their affordability. For over a decade, Checker’s research on “environmental gentrification”—the use of environmental improvements to drive high-end redevelopment—has exposed the paradoxes of urban sustainability. This book develops an intricate and comprehensive account of environmental gentrification, from its historic roots to the different forms it takes. Extending this analysis, Checker also challenges popular myths about civic engagement: her work alongside environmental justice activists reveals how institutional mechanisms meant to foster public participation and community empowerment have actually undermined both. And yet Checker finds hope in surprising places. Across the country, sustainability’s broken promises have given rise to new, nonpartisan political formations. Borne of crisis, these grassroots coalitions are crossing racial, economic, and political divides to create new possibilities for our collective future.

AbstractThe cultivation and preservation of gardens, parks and cultural landscapes as fine art have been expressions of culture for millennia and are becoming essential tasks of cultural property protection in times of climate change. This is because the visible effects of climate change are increasingly threatening the historical aesthetics and current uses of historic gardens. Strategies for climate adaptation require not only thorough and networked experiential knowledge in the field of conservation and restoration sciences but also specific and interdisciplinary research expertise. Gardens as cultural assets must become scientific model laboratories to understand cultivation and conservation as essential cultural tasks of our societies. These challenges must lead to a new understanding of nature that initiates and perpetuates a responsible, humane sense of life through the gardens.

AbstractTaihu stone is the most famous one among the top four stones in China. It is formed by the water's erosion in Taihu Lake for hundreds or even thousands of years. It has become a common ornamental stone in classical Chinese gardens because of its porous and intricate forms. At the same time, it has become a cultural symbol through thousands of years of history in China; later, people researched its spatial aesthetics; there are also some studies on its structural properties. For example, it has been found that the opening of Taihu stone caves has a steady-state effect which people develop its value in the theory of Poros City, Porosity in Architecture and some cultural symbols based on the original ornamental value of Taihu stone. This paper introduces a hybrid generative design method that integrates the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) techniques. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation enables architects and engineers to predict and optimise the performance of buildings and environment in the early stage of the design and topology optimisation techniques BESO has been widely used in structural design to evolve a structure from the full design domain towards an optimum by gradually removing inefficient material and adding materials simultaneously. This research aims to design the artificial Taihu stone based on the environmental data-driven performance feedback using the topological optimisation method. As traditional and historical ornament craftwork in China, the new artificial Taihu stone stimulates thinking about the new value and unique significance of the cultural symbol of Taihu stone in modern society. It proposes possibilities and reflections on exploring the related fields of Porosity in Architecture and Poros City from the perspective of structure.

AbstractThe idea of “thermal invisibility” has secured a pivotal position in both academic exploration and real-world application. Within the academic realm, the advent of thermal metamaterials has seamlessly intertwined with the principles of thermal invisibility, propelling this domain to the vanguard of contemporary research. Practically speaking, the potential of thermal invisibility is vast, encompassing realms from environmental stewardship and avant-garde chip engineering to intricate facets of national defense. This chapter delves holistically into the odyssey of thermal invisibility, tracing its journey from nascent theoretical musings to state-of-the-art implementations. We initiate by navigating the bedrock techniques undergirding thermal invisibility designs, including transformation theory, scattering cancellation theory, and topological optimization, while deep-diving into the substantial research orbiting these paradigms. Progressing further, we spotlight three game-changing advancements in thermal invisibility: carpet cloaks, ITR-free thermal cloaks, and thermal domes. These breakthroughs adeptly address the challenges intrinsic to conventional thermal cloaks, such as fabrication intricacies, the repercussions of interfacial thermal resistance, and application constraints. Notably, the evolution of thermal invisibility dovetails with the maturation of thermal metamaterials. Through this overview, we aim to furnish readers with a refreshed vantage point on the historical arc of this enthralling discipline.

Abstract Diverse biotic interactions between non-native plant species and other species from all taxonomic groups are crucial mediators of the dynamics of plant invasions. This chapter reviews the key hypotheses in invasion ecology that invoke biotic interactions to explain aspects of plant invasion dynamics. We examine the historical context of these hypotheses and assess the evidence for accepting or rejecting their predictions. Most hypotheses invoke antagonistic interactions, mainly competition, predation, herbivory interactions and the role of pathogens. Only in the last two decades have positive (facilitative/mutualistic) interactions been explicitly included in invasion biology theory (as in ecological theory in general). Much information has accumulated in testing hypotheses relating to biotic resistance and Enemy Release Theory, although many of the emerging generalizations are still contentious. There is growing consensus that other drivers of plant invasion success, such as propagule pressure and disturbance, mediate the outcome of biotic interactions, thereby complicating our ability to make predictions, but these have rarely been assessed in both native and adventive ranges of non-native invasive species. It is also widely acknowledged that biogeographic comparisons, more than common garden experiments, are needed to shed light on many of the contradictory results. Contrasting findings have also emerged in exploring the roles of positive interactions. Despite strong evidence that such interactions are crucial in many communities, more work is needed to elucidate the factors that influence the relative importance of positive and negative interactions in different ecosystems. Different types of evidence in support of invasional meltdown have emerged for diverse habitats and across spatial scales. In light of increasing evidence that biotic indirect effects are crucial determinants of the structure, dynamics and evolution of ecological communities, both direct and indirect interactions involving native and non-native species must be considered to determine how they shape plant invasion patterns and the ecological impacts of non-native species on recipient communities. Research that examines both biotic interactions and the factors that mediate their strength and alter interaction outcomes is needed to improve our ability to predict the effects of novel interactions between native and non-native species, and to envisage how existing invaded communities will respond to changing environmental conditions. Many opportunities exist for manipulating biotic interactions as part of integrated control strategies to reduce the extent, density and impacts of non-native plant invasions. These include the introduction of species from the native range of the non-native plant for biological control, diverse manipulations of plant - herbivore interactions and many types of interaction to enhance biotic resistance and steer vegetation recovery following non-native plant control.

Oral histories concerning the clan camps of the early and mid-twentieth century are still abundant today, but it is feared much of this important history will be lost within a generation. Tribal schools realize the importance of teaching this recent history as it was during these times that Seminole families were still entirely self-sufficient, growing and hunting the majority of their subsistence base. The self-sufficiency ethos is a key part of cultural identity and one that helps define who the Seminole people are. As the authors explain, the research undertaken by the THPO to document these reservation-era camps is driven by a community need to actively manage and preserve this information for future generations of Tribal members. The importance of this work is driven home if you are lucky enough to witness a Tribal school group visiting a historic camp; armed with maps and plans showing where houses and gardens were located students can immerse themselves in their own history. Archaeology adds to this story by providing not only the means to capture a picture of the camp that can be combined with oral histories but also to provide a tangible tool by which students can actively participate in the learning process.

This chapter considers how the historical approach to thinking about the use and experience of gardens could be applied in heritage interpretation, thereby offering fresh insights into the bridging of theory and practice. It argues that the heritage sector can only be enhanced by historical work, which unpacks cultural assumptions and moves beyond traditional garden history approaches. It also discusses the process that should be a two-way movement in which research questions are opened and shaped by practical interpretation and engagement goals, rather than being seen as two separate enterprises. The chapter notes how researchers tended to overlook the complex ways in which gardens were used by contemporaries, as arenas of social display and recreation, and as statements of social identity. As John Wylie has written, research on landscapes to date has generally focused on a particular visual mode of observing and knowing.

This book presents a history of the factory gardens and parks movement in Britain and the United States, from its origins in the early Industrial Revolution, to its zenith in the years preceding the Second World War and concludes with an overview of the evolution of corporate landscapes from the second half of the twentieth century to the present. Industrialists attempted to assuage the effects of mass production by embracing the historical, cultural and metaphorical meanings of gardens to refine corporate culture and to redefine industry as progressive and responsible. Industry contributed distinctively and significantly to gardening culture and to opportunities for outdoor recreation in the first half of the twentieth century. Analysing factories from the point of view of landscape has produced a significant new interpretation of factory design, society and culture, which draws out the meanings of time and space in the factory that are not related to the production line. The discussion draws on empirical evidence underpinned by sources from a broad disciplinary base, including areas of research within architectural, art, photographic, landscape and garden histories; cultural geography, social history, philosophy, gender studies and social science.

If one has not read local English novels like The Garden of Evening Mists and The Night Tiger, one would never be able to imagine the wonders of locales depicted in these two books. One of the reasons the authors here want to visit a said destination is because of the way a certain place is pictured in narratives. Tan Twan Eng brings to life the beauty of Japanese gardens in Cameron Highlands, in the backdrop of postWorld War II while Yangsze Choo takes us into several small towns of Kinta Valley in the state of Perak in her beautifully woven tale of the superstitions and beliefs of the local people in Chinese folklore and myth in war torn Malaysia in the 1930s and after. Many of the places mentioned in these two novels should be considered places to visit by tourists local and international. Although these Malaysian novelists live away from Malaysia, they are clearly ambassadors of the Malaysian cultural and regional heritage. In this paper, a few of the places in the novel will be looked at as potential spots for the coming decade. The research questions considered here are i) what can be done to make written narratives the new trend to pave the way for Visit Malaysia destinations? ii) how could these narratives be promoted as guides to the history and culture of Malaysia? The significant destinations and the relevant cultural history of the regions will be discussed in-depth to come to a relevant conclusion.

As an artist-researcher, I have been developing the research “Marlene's house” in the Doctorate in Arts, Graduate Program in Arts, Institute of Art Sciences, Federal University of Pará, since 2018. An extension of the research I produced in the Master's Degree in Arts, at the same institution of higher education, from 2016 to 2018. It is a poetics built from family and affective memory, in which photography, video, sound, writing, smell, taste, touch and feeling merge. And it is part of research line 1, on poetics and acting processes, dedicated to research in the arts, with a focus on poetics, on modes of acting, on the construction and presentation of an artistic work, accompanied by a reflective text. Thus, the research is being built with a memorial that houses the reflective text and a work, consisting of an installation with photography-video-sound-writing, records of my mother's house. Along the way, I talk to researcher Priscila Arantes, from São Paulo, who writes: “expanded field photography incorporates [...] the idea of dialogue, contamination and intersections of the field of photography with other fields of language and know." I also talk to the American Rosalind Krauss, who studies three-dimensional work and its expanded field. As a personal methodology, I mentally create a garden mixed with my memories of the garden of the house where I lived, where I develop the installation and the memorial. A meditation in which there is the action of artistic making. And it is in this garden that I experiment, read, research, edit photography-video-sound-written, reflect on my life path and what touches me throughout it, and write the research texts. During classes, in practical-reflective studies, I have been building my poetics, experimenting with installations in the classroom. One of them related to the kitchen of the house where I lived. I tried, in two subjects, the coffee experience with classmates. A performance I talk to Renato Cohen about, when he says that this creative act touches the tenuous boundaries that separate life and art. Each layer of the installation is perceived in the creative process of the artwork. And, based on what I perceive in my poetics, I develop conversations with the history of art, and I have conceived texts, which I named the artist's writings. With the letters, words, sentences and reflections, I write down what I thought/think about geometry, dimensions, space, the room in the house and sharing around a dining table. The poetic layers built in the creative path are countless and, in the installation, I present traces that are in me, in the garden, in the bedroom, in the kitchen and in the backyard where I lived a life in my mother's house.

Museums as cultural institutions certainly reflect the sociocultural transformations of the new era and are changing with the new reality. Except for that, a museum is, by definition, an institution of memory, a keeper of history, it is based on adoption: the collection, successiveness and actualisation of past experience. What is perceived as innovation by contemporary society may have historical roots and be an actualisation of innovations of a bygone era. Modern museum development recalls a global project undertaken by Russian avant-garde artists in the early 20th century, and implying the institutional modernisation of museums. This study addresses a project taken on by avant-garde artists for the modernisation of museums in the context of general cultural construction, in cooperation with the Soviet Government. The research methodology is based on a conjunction of a historical study and culturological analysis, primarily the concept of the institutional approach. The study consisted in looking through archival documents: The Fund of the People’s Commissariat for Education and its departments (declarations, provisions, resolutions, decrees, minutes of meetings, correspondence, protocols and statements of estimates, inventory books of the State Museum Fund etc.), personal funds of artists and cultural figures, their theoretical works, articles, correspondence. A holistic inter-disciplinary approach combining historical and culturological analysis with prospects for contemporary sociocultural development and the role of museums is seen as a promising novelty of the research. Russian avantgardism as an artistic and sociocultural phenomenon has remained of great interest for a century. Different studies shed light only on separate aspects of this vast topic in different scientific contexts. The examination of the museum project by avant-garde artists under this study allows us to conclude that they were the first to undertake the institutional modernisation of museums by considering them in the focus of new demands of time and society, innovative programmes as forms of personal initiatives and experiments expressed in the broad public space of artistic culture.

Abstract This paper examines whether the form of the Teleorama or paper peep show can be used to generate new ways of making and exhibiting drawings of contemporary sites of ruination. The Teleorama will be used as a physical and conceptual vehicle for testing out a diverse range of investigations relating to form and content in drawing practice. Within my practice, paper ruins, inspired by Teleoramas, are constructed and used as maquettes from which to make two-dimensional drawings that are retranslated into large-scale, three-dimensional installations. Through the process of (re) construction, the research will develop an understanding of the Teleorama as a partially imagined, partially ‘real’ space that can transport the viewer conceptually from one place to another. I use the Picturesque, as a spatial and perceptual theory relating to painting and garden design, to explore how the Teleorama can be conceptualised as both a series of drawings on two-dimensional planes and a three-dimensional space, focusing on the fundamental ideas of ‘absorption’ and ‘theatricality’ as expounded by Michael Fried (1980), and ‘immersion’ as expounded by Arnold Berleant (2004). By identifying aspects of the Teleorama that cannot be compared to either paintings or gardens as spaces, I foreground its unique ability to represent the apparent collapse of space and time in a material form and enable an oscillation between two- and three-dimensional design and construction. By focusing on how space is created and experienced within selected contemporary installation practices, I aim to position my practice within the broader discursive fi eld of installation, distinguishing their use of space from my use of the Teleorama to create immersive drawn environments reinterpret ruin sites in gallery settings. Through interrogating and reconfi guring the historical form of the Teleorama, I aim to propose new models of installation practice within the field of contemporary drawing. There is plenty of research on school gardening practices reflecting the positive effects of garden-based learning on the development of elementary school students, which are mainly based on short-term gardening program implementation and assessment. However, theoretical research of school gardening is still not shaped well, as the distribution of research activities is unequal and the concept itself is still considered being innovative. A review of scientific literature and documents has been done to define what the school gardening concept really means and what are the spatial and functional domains of it. The review has touched on historical aspects of the school gardening movement’s rise at the beginning of the 20th century in the U.S., as the country considered being at the frontiers of the current trend. Differences in defining school gardening priorities were identified, pointing out the variety of functional domains of school gardening activities developed during the century. Currently, school gardening is characterized by its role in improving students’ learning and achievements, environmental attitudes, health and food behaviours, intrapersonal skills and emotional wellbeing, and social bonds. Also, as the term “school gardening” itself refers to a specific place-based setting, its spatial domain was inspected and redefined according to the variety of current garden-based learning practices. The review allowed to define school gardening as a school-run and community-supported tool for student engagement with school curriculum, civic activism, healthy lifestyle, and development of intrapersonal and social skills through experiential, experimental, transdisciplinary, collaborative, and self-directed learning.

The research methodology is based on historiography and makes use of two approaches that are close to the English school of urban morphology: the reconstitution of the historical context of the period of conformation of the urban fragment and the analysis of the urban form, contemplating the questions referring to the implantation in the urban land from the layout of roads and blocks, the division of lots and the occupation of buildings within the lots. Keywords: urban morphology; garden district; Jardim São Bento; urban form. The planning -understood as the privileged instrument to develop and to improve the quality of life of any settlement- used improperly or intentionally can end up destroying rather than building and marginalizing instead of integrating. In Nazaret, a maritime village in the conurbation of Valencia, Spain, the developed planning since the mid-twentieth century, has become this settlement, originally surrounded by vegetable gardens and next to the sea, in an isolated location, which is suffering a gradual loss of quality and identity. Without sea, without beach, surrounded by infrastructures and with decreasing vegetable gardens, Nazaret has been degraded by an urban planning that has ended up becoming "the problem". This paper shows some results of a historical-critical research of the planning in the area. Here, although we do not address the possible "hidden intentions" of the planners (always hard to prove), the dire social and spatial consequences of the sequence of the decisions are evident.
