Typescript. Includes vita and abstract. Bibliography: Includes bibliographical references (leaves 89-91).
A geometric model using idealized prey behaviors in reaction to wading bird disturbances was developed to hypothesize how wading bird foraging strategy might most efficiently counter those behaviors. The model suggests that for prey responding to wading bird disturbances with flight response distance strongly negatively correlated to their distance from the point of disturbance, wading birds could employ disturbance facilitated social foraging strategy, thereby increasing individual foraging efficiency and selecting for social foraging. In controlled studies of the reactive behaviors of two primary prey species seen to be taken at disparate rates by solitary and socially foraging herons, schooling Shiner Surfperch exhibited behaviors favoring social foraging in herons, while Staghorn Sculpins exhibited no correlation in their flight response distances relative to their proximity to the disturbance, and seemed unlikely to be more efficiently utilized by socially foraging wading birds.

BROKEN HEROES is a mystery novel set in the modem day Southern California rock music scene. The protagonist is Declan St. James, 35, an alcoholic ex-musician and frustrated music journalist who, with friend and former bandmate, Stevie Richards, investigates the mysterious death of mentor Art Schulman. The search ultimately leads them to PowerTrash, a cult favorite band which, years earlier, suffered a mysterious death of its own. The novel is told in Declan's first-person voice looking back on these events. Like A.S. Byatt's Possession, the book uses the study of artists and their work to connect past and present storylines and ultimately rewrite history. And like Erskine Childers's classic spy novel, The Riddle of the Sands, the novel employs an amateur detective called to action for his special skills.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the resumption of the classic hero image, present in Homer’s texts, into the Iberian chronicles of low Middle Ages. Specifically, we will get focus into the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, in as much as the Iberian chronicles that have been made in this period had as identity the assign of building a good image of their kings. This movement delineates an attempt for the consolidation of Iberian nationality feelings – but, is important to highlight, it cannot be confused with the national knowingness of Absolutists States – it allows us to notice the reinforcement of the regionalist and dynastic feelings. We seek to perceive the meaning alteration from the Greek hero for the medieval hero, taking in account the concept of virtue considered in Middle Ages for the “men’s ideal type” in the chronicles, from the chivalrous moral in craze. For that, we will employ the Crónica Troiana, since this is the medieval write which better represents the histories of mythology and ancient epic. Our first interest consists of thinking about how the Crónica Troiana was made and from witch papers it could born. Beyond this one, produced in Alfonso’s XI court (in Castile) we intend to argue about the hero picture in General Estoria of Alfonso X and in La Crónica Geral de Espanha de 1334, written by Dom Pedro, Count of Barcelos. Those papers present us histories about their ancestors and bounces that they are models to be followed. We also propound to think about the reasons that encouraged the compilers from Alfonso’s XI court to write about Trojan history, the different moral values present in the way the legend was narrated in times and, in the end, the incidence in Middle Ages of other models that can correspond to a heroic figure, as the saints and the kings.

My ongoing series of assemblages are an expression my modern mythology through the juxtaposition of esoteric symbols and my collection of beloved action figures. Though myth is founded in partial truths and allegories, it has the unique capability to speak about our relationships to one another and the universe. My artwork conceives of anime, comics, and videos games as part of our contemporary mythology. Inspired by a fusion of pop culture and spirituality, I also draw on the magical properties attributed to flowers, gemstones and other materials to create shrines, altars, and other objects. Juxtaposing these properties, found in my research of esotericism and mythology, with action figures establishes symbolic connections that act as an interface to the spiritual symbolism explored in each piece. The collision of masking tape, shoe polish, flowers; gemstones and repurposed objects result in re-contextualizations of characters from popular culture. My practice suggests new possibilities for cultural symbolism reflective of my own unique experiences and values and as an active expression of creative freedom in our experiences of the divine. My assemblages re-examine traditional categorizations in art and culture, such as sacred and profane and high and low, while attempting to demystify the veil that separates the experiential from the transcendent.

There is a dearth of Black male education success stories and a lack of documenting by some pastoral practitioners of their model of pastoral care. The absence of both my story and model was due to traumatic memories. As a Black male pastor and educator, seen as a role model, working to inspire Black young males disaffected in their education, the absence blocked my practice advancement. Therefore, I used this problem for a self-reflective study on my practice to put my record straight. First I revisited a snapshot of my educational past and contemporary practice using a Black metaphorical redemptive lens to see my study as a Black hero’s journey. Second, I imagined myself through a Johari Awareness Model in reflective conversation with myself, Jesus Christ, and others. Third, I located my work within a practical theological paradigm and used autoethnographic methodological approach and methods to gather and analyse my data. Finally, I subjected my findings to a discussion interpreted through my conceptual lens to see what would emerge. Hidden insights underpinning my practice were surfaced providing me with a new view of my life and way of being in my practice. Captured in the form of my autoethnography, this serves as a new Black cultural symbolic resource. This gives documented access to my education success story. It also models my pastoral practice which now enables me to share with others, through symbolic modelling, the current best knowledge and practices underpinning my work. My study is an innovative use of inner experiences for Black professional advancement from blocked traumatic memories. It provides a new model within the field of practical theology, by which others might see a theology by heart beyond the usage of text for professional development. The paper deals with the analysis of contemporary Lithuanian documentary film in the field of communication and culture theories, where “contemporary” film is considered to be made more or less in the last ten years. It analyses the object in the terms of innovation of definition, iconography of the protagonist and structures of narratives. The definition of documentary film is examined on the one hand from the journalistic point of view, characterizing it as a fact-based film that depicts actual events and persons; on the other hand, in the film theory sight it is considered to be a manipulative narration of the story, taken out of reality. A central question is if characteristics of factuality is remaining the main one talking about the documentary film, as the examples of Lithuanian poetic documentaries are far-off exposing of reality. That is why this study suggests a new definition of the object, putting a director’s role in the narrative above actual reflection of factuality: a documentary is called here a director’s viewpoint (in the case of Lithuanian poetic genre – a meditation) on the phenomena of the objective reality. Qualitative film text analysis and the communicational approaches of John Fiske, Marshall McLuhan and Jean Baudrillard’s ideas provide the theoretical framework for the study. Documentary films are analyzed as the object of science of communication. It is focused on reading the communicational codes and conventions in different genres of documentary... [to full text]

Stone, Irene Elizabeth May. "Speeches and Speechmaking in Herodotus’ Histories". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18887.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The overall purpose of this study is to position Herodotus firmly in the rhetorical life of the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC. Speeches and speechmaking are key features of the world Herodotus describes, as well as the world he inhabits: indirect speech in the Histories may be the historian’s favoured method of communication, nonetheless his use of oratio recta is widespread. Indeed, speechmaking proves an essential element of his work, but it consistently fails to receive the scholarly attention it deserves. As a consequence, this thesis provides the first comprehensive inquiry into the role of direct speech in Herodotus’ Histories. It is undertaken in two parts. Firstly, all occasions of direct speech within the text are identified and retained in an appendix affixed at the conclusion of the study. The appendix shows that Herodotean direct speech can fall into four categories. The classifications reveal that the historian uses each to convey the same message, but in different ways: Herodotean monologue obviously secures a solo performance; a short exchange between two people necessarily lacks the depth of prolonged speech between two characters; and an animated third party clearly varies the forces at work in any contrived and dramatized scene they (or he) participates. The second and more important part of the study examines separate instances of Herodotean direct speech as they correspond with one of the four groups. Each selected example demonstrates that oratio recta is reserved for important moments, occasions upon which decisions are made that require reflection. It becomes clear that Herodotean direct speech, for the most part, is delivered in circumstances producing significant consequence. The study demonstrates that Herodotus deploys spare, but vivid direct speech to dramatize and emphasise salient points, a rhetorical method ensuring easy recall of a message - a resolve the historian makes apparent in the proem. This thesis outlines Herodotus’ use of direct speech and demonstrates how his speakers uphold dominant motifs of the mutability of life, and the responsibilities attaching to human choice, motifs that reside in the properties of Attic tragedy. Interpreted in Herodotean oratio recta, these themes establish the historian’s familiarity with the theatre of his day and, I argue, the animation of chosen characters affords us an uninterrupted view of Herodotus’ position in his world, and his opinion of it. In this manner, close scrutiny of Herodotus’ direct speech progresses our knowledge of his time, his location in it, and his beliefs.

The poet Publius Ovidius Naso (43 b. C. - 17 a. D.) began his literary career early, singing themes highly appreciated by the youth, such as love, seduction and good living. And the style that best conveyed those themes was the love elegy, inspired from Alexandrian writers such as Callimachus and the previous generation of Latin poets, especially Tibullus, Propertius, Cornelius Gallus, and Catullus. Later, Ovid expanded both the theme and variety of the genres he wrote. The goal of this work is to verify the presence of motifs (tópoi) typically elegiac in the poems IV, V, VI, IX, XI and XII of the Heroides, an Ovid work comprising eighteen fictional letters from epic heroines to their absent beloved ones and the corresponding responses to three of them. Finally, it is also proposed a commented translation of such poems, a general study on love elegy, and their most recurring tópoi.
O poeta Públio Ovídio Nasão (43 a. C. - 17 d.

This research aims to test a strategy to expand the literary repertoire of students of the 7th grade of Elementary School in a public school in Juiz de Fora: the creation of a community of readers in the classroom through shared reading of a reference work for students - in this case the Bible, more specifically narratives related to the heroes Moses and Jesus - using as a key reading the Hero's Journey, which will establish an intertextual relationship between the already known work and a network of new works belonging to systems different from the literary polysystem. The hypothesisis that reading the stories of the biblical heroes Moses and Jesus will allow students to expand their repertoire by appropriating literary strategies mobilized by the Hero's Journey, both in these stories and in the stories of the Greek heroes and the Celtic hero King Arthur . In addition, it is intended to check if it is possible to promote a newly acquired repertoire activation in a reading of parts of the contemporary Harry Potter series that takes in to account the intense intertextual dialogue it maintains with traditional narratives. The theoretical assumptions underlying this research were: literary repertoire (Iser, 1996), community of readers (Chartier, 1994), Hero's Journey (Campbell, 1997) and literary polysystem (Zohar, 2013). In addition, the shared reading strategy was adopted (Colomer, 2007). The methodology use disaction research and the instruments of data collection are diagnostic questionnaires, teacher's field diary and student reading diary. From the shared reading of the works mentioned above, we were able to build a community of readers from the Bible to other intertextually related works. The students were able to establish relationships between the stories read with reference to the Hero's Journey elaborated by Campbell.

This thesis investigates how hegemonic white masculinity adopts a new mode of material accumulation by entering into an ambivalent existence as a historical agent and metahistory at the same time and continues to function as a performative identity that offers a point of identification for the working class white man suggesting that bourgeois identity is obtainable through the performance of bourgeois ethics. The thesis postulates that the phenomenal transitions brought on by industrialization and deindustrialization of 50's through 90's coincide with the representational changes of white masculinity from paradigmatic cowboy incarnations to the postmodern action heroes, specifically as embodied by Bruce Willis. The thesis also examines how postmodern heroes' "intero-alterity" is further problematized by antiheroes in Tim Burton's films.

This work describes how the Herons steam ball was built and how it works. It was constructed by Heron 2000 years ago. The purpose was to determine the efficiency of the steam ball because it was unknown. The efficiency was never determined. It was only theoretically determined by calculations. The steam pressure never gave the steam ball rotation when heat was added underneath the construction. A possible reason was that friction in the sealing for supplying feed water into the steam ball was too high.

The heat transfer was also a reason that the construction did not rotate.

The steam ball and necessary equipment was fabricated in dec-07/jan-08. It was built without any drawings. The goal was to make it look like the original as much as possible. A smaller steam ball was built some years before. This one did rotate and therefore was the same design given to the bigger one.

Because of the lack of rotation there was no doubt if the steam ball was a sucsess or not.

It was not used for any real purpose 2000 years ago and this has not changed.

A calculated figure of the efficiency was documented in this rapport, and it was very low.

It was amusing to design and build the steam ball but the construction was clearly no success.

Abstract: This study tries to delineate a broad view of the idol and hero importance and complexity in football, in order to comprehend its influence of transforming childhood dreams in profession. For its understanding and analysis, we used anthropology instruments based on ethnography referential, which were the intensive interview and the document analysis. Eleven (11) people who compose the football view were interviewed, nine professional players and two ex professional players. The theoretical referential sought to understand the football importance in Brazilian lives, from its arrival as a leisure activity, until it became a local ¿habitus¿. Considering football as an absorbent game, we tried to define myth and imaginary to comprehend the several questions about Brazilian football. The discussed issues were: the Charles Miller character as the football introducer in Brazil, the people¿s opium, football as a national identity, the gift in football, the debate about game style, known as art football and strength football, and the matters related to the dream of being a professional player (beginning, attempt, and dream coming true). All the topics are presented as a support for the central discussion of the study, considering myth and imaginary as the basis for this investigation about idols and heroes in Brazilian football, their importance in the process, the conceptual differences and the influences of these characters on the creation of the dream of being a professional player

ALL MY HEROES ARE BROKE is a poetry collection written from the perspective of a first generation American coming to terms with the implicit struggles and disillusionment of the American Dream. The first section takes place in New York, both implicitly and explicitly, and serves to introduce the speaker and reveal aspects of his family’s history. The second section takes place in Florida, and continues to further exemplify the speaker’s growing cynicism towards the circumstances of his life, and the peculiar atmosphere of solitude that it creates. ALL MY HEROES ARE BROKE primarily uses two forms: short, image driven poems inspired by the works of Robert Bly and Po Chu-I; and longer narrative poems that reveal more personal information about the speaker, in the manner of Li-Young Lee and Frank O’Hara, allowing the speaker to project his own life onto his surroundings and the people of those larger communities.

Ukraine's creation of national heroes reflects the challenges of nation-building after the fall of the Soviet Union. Since its independence in 1991, Ukraine has attempted to "rehabilitate" controversial political figures into national heroes in order to create a united national history. Nations have always depended on symbols and perhaps one of the most important symbols is that of a national hero. A person who fought and possibly died fighting for a national cause can unite and inspire future generations while legitimizing the necessity of the state. Along with inspiring faith and courage, the focus on national heroes manifests norms, goals, and are a medium for imposing those beliefs upon a society. While Ukraine has literary heroes, political figures are controversial. My research has focused on five figures: Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, Ivan Mazepa, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Symon Petliura, and Stepan Bandera due to their attempts to build an independent state in Ukrainian history.

Heroes Are Born Then Made is a theatre piece involving live actors on stage, and live music originating from an orchestra pit. The script and music is original. The music is meant to literally depict actions and emotions on stage whether the actors are present or not. The duration of the entire production is about two and one-half hours long. Six main actors are used with additional walk-ons. Sixteen musicians are required to make up the orchestra which is organized into a woodwind quartet, a brass trio, a string quartet, a piano, and a percussion quartet. The play is based on the author's conception of how people tend to treat each other when someone is caught at a disadvantage. Specifically it is a depiction of the conflict involved when the minor characters discover that the main character is trying to do something quite different from their definition of "normal."

Chapter 1, 2 of the Noctes Atticae reports how the orator and politician Herodes Atticus silences a boastful young Stoic by citing a diatribe of Epictetus. The article shows that Gellius – unlike his own assertion – does not describe a real experience. Instead he dramatizes the text (Epict. diss. 2, 19), which is the origin of the citation. Comparing both texts one finds details of the scenery described, the characterizations of the protagonists as well as the themes discussed quite similar in both the non-cited parts of Epictetus and the text of Gellius. Particularly interesting in that respect is how Gellius takes up citing and its various aspects as it can be found in his model. Epictetus deals with this theme in a critical way, because in his opinion citations of authorities say nothing about the philosophical qualities of the person who uses them. While Gellius’ praxis of citation is formally modelled very closely on Epictetus’ speech, regarding the content he by no means rejects the use of philosophical citations as weapon to beat an opponent in discussion.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis takes as its starting point the fact that this period witnessed easily the highest and most consistent levels of indigenous feature film production in the history of Scottish film culture. By the end of the 1990s, many observers proposed that it was for the first time possible to talk about the existence of a 'Scottish cinema' and/or a 'Scottish film industry', where before only occasional Scottish films and/or Scottish filmmakers could be discerned. This thesis argues that the most important precipitant of Scottish cinema's unprecedented 1990s industrial expansion involved local filmmakers' pre-mediated, industrially aspirant adaptation of American cinematic precedents and working practices. The nature of this 'adaptation' was two-fold. On one hand, it was institutional, relating to the reformation and creation of the kind of financial, training and plant infrastructures which make feature production possible. On the other, it was creative, relating to the generic and aesthetic influences and reference points preferred by many 1990s Scottish filmmakers. This thesis presents the trajectory of the American agenda which dominated 1990s Scottish cinema within a 'Rise and Fall' paradigm. It proposes that the first half of the decade witnessed predominantly progressive local engagements, both industrially and ideologically speaking, with American film industrial and cultural practices. The latter part of the 1990s, however, was characterised by regressive misinterpretations of earlier, beneficial transatlantic appropriations. By the end of the decade, two things were clear about Scottish cinema's 1990s American agenda. Firstly, that agenda had either created or consolidated many previously lacking material conditions necessary for a sustainable national cinema. Secondly, that agenda had largely exhausted itself as a convincing blueprint for the further development of Scottish cinema.

Streszczenie:
Film exhibits an existential time structure. It presents characters and events in the present moment and as the film progresses the future of the characters is built from their past within the film. Characterisation in film differs from that of the novel primarily in that characters are seen as they become what they are through their actions. In the novel a character is already fixed. Film also differs from theatre in that the differing use of space allows for a more intimate acting style on the part of the actor and more involvement on the part of the viewer. Film noir, in particular, manifests existential themes in its plot lines and characterisation, e.g. alienation, anxiety and the developmental nature of personality. A number of theorists have attempted to define film noir and to account for its distinctive look. These include David Bordwell, Borde and Chaumeton and Christine Gledhill. So far no definition has successfully accounted for all the features present in these films. An existential analysis offers a new way to approach this problem. Due to its distinctive use of philosophical themes film noir constitutes a separate and continuing genre. A noir paradigm can be established by isolating these philosophical themes and the stylistic methods which express them. This can be used as a criterion to identify noir films. Noirs can be divided into different periods by identifying the dominant theme of various decades. These reflect the social conditions of the time as well as popular response to existential philosophers, for instance, Sartre and Nietzsche who have both been considerable popularised. In addition noir can be seen as a response to restrictive Hollywood practices.
