Streszczenie:
Abstract Datisca glomerata is an androdioecious plant species containing male and hermaphroditic individuals. Molecular markers and crossing data suggest that, in both D. glomerata and its dioecious sister species D. cannabina, sex is determined by a single nuclear locus, at which maleness is dominant. Supporting this conclusion, an amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) is heterozygous in males and homozygous recessive in hermaphrodites in three populations of the androdioecious species. Additionally, hermaphrodite × male crosses produced 1:1 sex ratios, while hermaphrodite × hermaphrodite crosses produced almost entirely hermaphroditic offspring. No perfectly sex-linked marker was found in the dioecious species, but all markers associated with sex mapped to a single linkage group and were heterozygous in the male parent. There was no sex-ratio heterogeneity among crosses within D. cannabina collections, but males from one collection produced highly biased sex ratios (94% females), suggesting that there may be sex-linked meiotic drive or a cytoplasmic sex-ratio factor. Interspecific crosses produced only male and female offspring, but no hermaphrodites, suggesting that hermaphroditism is recessive to femaleness. This comparative approach suggests that the hermaphrodite form arose in a dioecious population from a recessive mutation that allowed females to produce pollen.

This article discusses representations of hermaphrodites in the domestic context of Roman gardens and argues that the spatial context of the hermaphrodite body is as germane to critical understanding as the intersexed body itself. The spatial and semantic interrelations between Roman gardens and hermaphrodite images focus on the dynamics of viewing hermaphrodite types in Italo-Roman art (section 1), the spatial configuration of hermaphrodites with documented findspots (section 2), Ovid's introduction of garden imagery in the tale of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus (Met. 4. 285–388) compared to the Salmakis inscription from Kaplan Kalesi at Halicarnassus (section 3), and the historical correlation to Augustan Rome's vegetative symbolism (section 4). This synthesis of material, literary, and historical evidence for hermaphrodite images indicates that their representation in Roman domestic art can be read as an expression of domestic harmony that mirrored the emphasis on heterosexual union and political concord ushered in by Augustus and Livia.

Abstract The mangrove rivulus Kryptolebias marmoratus a small cyprinodont fish native to tropical and subtropical waters from Florida to Brazil, is one of two known self-fertilizing, hermaphroditic vertebrates of which K. marmoratus displays androdioecy, a complex system of reproduction in which hermaphrodites and males are present. This study describes the behavioral repertoires observed during dyadic interactions in the laboratory. Kryptolebias marmoratus exhibited 23 distinctive acts or behaviors. Acts were divided into four categories: aggressive, submissive, neutral, and reproductive. Leading and following behaviors played important roles in the behavioral repertoires of these fish. In hermaphrodite-male dyads, males exclusively initiated the reproductive process and actively pursued hermaphrodites. When hermaphrodites were paired, there was no evidence that they behaved like other simultaneous hermaphrodites that alternate sexual roles (e.g. serranids). Hermaphrodites were extremely aggressive towards one another, and the aggressor established dominance rapidly. Male-male dyads were divided into two subdivisions based on the presence or absence of the caudal ocellus on one fish. A caudal ocellus on one male appeared to signal the possibility of a potential mating partner to males lacking it. Pairings of males without an ocellus were similar to hermaphrodite-hermaphrodite dyads in that both members of the pair were aggressive towards one another. These observations may be indicative of interactions taking place in natural communities or assemblages of fish in which both males and hermaphrodites occur and provide evidence on the role of dyadic interactions in the mixed-mating strategies.

In perennial species that produce only one flower per individual each year, androdiœcy (coexistence of genetic male and hermaphrodite individuals) may be difficult to distinguish from andromonœcy (male and hermaphrodite flowers on the same plant). We show that the alpine lily, Lloydia serotina Rchb., produces functionally male and hermaphroditic flowers. Mean male frequency in 11 populations in the French Alps was 48.5%, ranging from 15.5 to 67.5%. Male flowers do not produce more pollen nor sire more seeds per flower in controlled pollinations than hermaphrodite flowers. Male floral scapes were consistently shorter than those of hermaphrodites. Out of several thousand observed floral scapes, four had two flowers, all with a terminal hermaphroditic flower and an axillary male one. Among 107 bulbs transplanted in pots in 1996, eighteen expressed a different sexual phenotype in 1999 or 2000, and one hermaphrodite produced two flowers of different sexes in 2000. Together, these results suggest that L. serotina is andromonœcious throughout its lifetime.Key words: Lloydia serotina, andromonœcy, male reproductive success, Liliaceae.

Gynomonoecy, the occurrence of both pistillate (female) and perfect (hermaphroditic) flowers on the same plant, has received little attention compared to gynodioecy and other plant sexual systems. Eremurus anisopterus is a perennial ephemeral in the cold desert of northwest China with a hermaphrodite–gynomonoecious sexual system in the same population. The primary aim of this study was to compare the early life history traits and inbreeding depression between progeny from pistillate and hermaphrodite flowers in hermaphrodites and gynomonoecious individuals. All of the traits of progeny from outcrossed pistillate flowers on gynomonoecious plants were significantly greater than for other pollination types. Selfing (vs. outcrossing) resulted in a decrease in all traits, indicating inbreeding depression (ID) during early life history stages of gynomonoecious and hermaphroditic plants. ID for seed mass, seed germination and seedling survivorship under water stress for pistillate flowers on gynomonoecious plants was significantly higher than it was for hermaphrodite flowers on both gynomonoecious and hermaphrodite plants. The advantage of the offspring of pistillate (vs. hermaphrodite) flowers may contribute to the maintenance of gynomonoecy in E. anisopterus in its cold desert sand dune habitat.

Populations of Fragaria virginiana Miller collected from 39 sites in Minnesota and western Wisconsin were gynodioecious, in that 35% of the plants were pistillate, 65% were hermaphroditic with perfect flowers, and none were staminate, when scored for gender expression in greenhouse or field plantings. Instability of gender expression across environments was apparent in 15% of the collections and these genotypes that appeared to change gender were termed weak hermaphrodites. Variation in gender composition of collections was not related in any consistent manner with the plant communities characterizing the collection sites. The proportions of pistillate plants, total hermaphrodites, strong hermaphrodites, and weak hermaphrodites in collections from the northern forest floristic province in the northeastern part of the region were not significantly different from those of collections from the southwestern prairie-forest floristic region, although collections from the prairie-forest province were more variable for gender composition than populations from the northern forest province. Lack of staminate plants and increased percentages of hermaphrodite plants, relative to reports in the literature, suggest that the gender composition of F. virginiana populations in Minnesota has changed, perhaps as a result of introgression from hermaphroditic Fragaria ×ananassa or Fragaria vesca. Abstract We describe a protocol for artificial insemination of Caenorhabditis elegans which we used to evaluate the viability of sperm from different strains and of sperm activated in vitro. Worms can be artificially inseminated with almost 100% success. Both male and hermaphrodite sperm can be used for insemination. Sperm from a sterile hermaphrodite [fem-3(q23ts)] were found to be viable. As with normal mating, male sperm inseminated into hermaphrodites artificially outcompete the hermaphrodite's own sperm, even though they have not been ejaculated with seminal fluid. Spermatozoa that were activated in vitro from spermatids by the weak base triethanolamine were viable. In contrast, spermatozoa activated in vitro by protease treatment were not.

Abstract The free-living nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans reproduces primarily as a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite, yet males are maintained in wild-type populations at low frequency. To determine the role of males in C. elegans, we develop a mathematical model for the genetic system of hermaphrodites that can either self-fertilize or be fertilized by males and we perform laboratory observations and experiments on both C. elegans and a related dioecious species C. remanei. We show that the mating efficiency of C. elegans is poor compared to a dioecious species and that C. elegans males are more attracted to C. remanei females than they are to their conspecific hermaphrodites. We postulate that a genetic mutation occurred during the evolution of C. elegans hermaphrodites, resulting in the loss of an attracting sex pheromone present in the ancestor of both C. elegans and C. remanei. Our findings suggest that males are maintained in C. elegans because of the particular genetic system inherited from its dioecious ancestor and because of nonadaptive spontaneous nondisjunction of sex chromosomes, which occurs during meiosis in the hermaphrodite. A theoretical argument shows that the low frequency of male mating observed in C. elegans can support male-specific genes against mutational degeneration. This results in the continuing presence of functional males in a 99.9% hermaphroditic species in which outcrossing is disadvantageous to hermaphrodites.

Streszczenie:
Local adaptation in hermaphrodite species can be based on a variety of fitness components, including survival, as well as both female and male sex-functions within individuals. When selection via female and male fitness components varies spatially (e.g. due to environmental heterogeneity), local adaptation will depend, in part, on variation in selection through each fitness component, and the extent to which genetic trade-offs between sex-functions maintain genetic variation necessary for adaptation. Local adaptation will also depend on the hermaphrodite mating system because self-fertilization alters several key factors influencing selection and the maintenance of genetic variance underlying trade-offs between the sex-functions (sexually antagonistic polymorphism). As a first step to guide intuition regarding sex-specific adaptation in hermaphrodites, we develop a simple theoretical model incorporating the essential features of hermaphrodite mating and adaptation in a spatially heterogeneous environment, and explore the interaction between sex-specific selection, self-fertilization and local adaptation. Our results suggest that opportunities for sex-specific local adaptation in hermaphrodites depend strongly on the extent of self-fertilization and inbreeding depression. Using our model as a conceptual framework, we provide a broad overview of the literature on sex-specific selection and local adaptation in hermaphroditic plants and animals, emphasizing promising future directions in light of our theoretical predictions. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Linking local adaptation with the evolution of sex differences'.

Literature has long preferred Ovid's hermaphrodite to PLato's androgyne ; but this tendency seems to change at the end of the nineteenth century. Analysing such evidence, the present thesis tries to understand the meaning of the emergence of a symbol in literature, which comes to supersede another one. .

Streszczenie:
The principal aim of the research presented in this thesis was to investigate factors affecting the "male competition" component of sexual selection in the hermaphroditic species, Senecio vulgaris. As male reproductive function consists of attracting pollinators and the success of pollen in contributing genes to the next generation, sexual selection will act on both the sporophytic and gametophytic stages of the life cycle. The potential for, and consequences of male competition were analysed at both pre- and post-pollination stages. A comparison of the relative attractiveness of the radiate and non-radiate morphs of S.vulgaris to pollinators revealed that in mixed stands, pollinators discriminated in favour of the radiate morph irrespective of the frequency of the two morphs in a population. Measurement of intramorph and intermorph maternal outcrossing rates showed the radiate morph always outcrossed at higher levels than the non-radiate morph. Both morphs exhibited levels of male outcrossing, the radiate morph exhibited higher levels of intramorph paternal outcrossing while non-radiate pollen was more successful than radiate pollen in intermorph crosses. The potential levels of intermorph and intramorph pollen competition experienced by the radiate and non-radiate pollen types suggest radiate pollen was subjected to greater levels of competition for access to ovules than non-radiate pollen. Examination of post-pollination events suggested that radiate pollen germinates faster than non-radiate pollen when applied to stigmas of either morph. However, no consistent evidence of radiate pollen tubes outcompeting non-radiate pollen tubes in the style and consequently fertilising a disproportionate share of available ovules was obtained. The problems associated with measuring pollen competitive ability are discussed. In addition to the research on male competition, a study was also conducted to examine the origin of the radiate morph of S.vulgaris. Morphometric and electrophoretic analyses provided strong evidence that a radiate variant from York possessed more 'squalidus-like' characters than are generally found in radiate S.vulgaris. It is suggested that this radiate form may represent an early stage in the origin of radiate S.vulgaris via introgression of S.squalidus into S.vulgaris.

Streszczenie:
The slug parasitic nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita is a lethal parasite of several slug species and has been formulated into a biological agent for farmers and gardeners. The potential effect of P. hermaphrodita to non-target organisms such as earthworms was investigated. P. hermaphrodita did not cause mortality to the earthworms and is a host specific molluscan parasite. In further studies P. hermaphrodita was shown to utilise earthworms to increase dispersal in soil columns. The response of P. hermaphrodita to an array of slug cues was assessed. The nematode responded well to slug mucus (foot and mantle) and faeces but responded weakly to volatile cues. Further experiments exposed P. hermaphrodita to mucus from different molluscan hosts. The nematode responded best to Arion subfuscus but the reasons for this were not discovered. The slug species Deroceras reticulatum, Milax gagates and Limax pseudoflavus were exposed to P. hermaphrodita. D. reticulatum and M. gagates were highly susceptible to P. hermaphrodita and feeding was strongly inhibited. L. pseudoflavus was not suscepticble to the nematode and did not exhibit signs of feeding inhibition. Nematodes were found in the shell of L. pseudoflavus which may be a defence mechanism to encapsulate invading parasites. Bacterial communities inside P. hermaphrodita grown on different slug species were profiled using PCR and DGGE. P. hermaphrodita did not associate exclusively with one bacterium but with an array of bacterial species. Each profile was different with each batch of nematodes. Field trials were conducted to test novel application strategies aimed at reducing cost of application and decreasing the numbers of nematodes applied. Three applications of 5 nematodes per cm-2 applied at fourteen day intervals reduced slug damage on day 14, 28 and 35. Dipping of the root plug into a nematode and adhesive agent as well as spraying around plant bases also reduced slug damage.

Streszczenie:

This thesis focuses on reproduction in a simultaneous hermaphrodite with internal fertilization; the nudibranch Aeolidiella glauca. Unlike most other nudibranchs, where copulation is the rule, A. glauca was found to transfer sperm via external spermatophores that were attached to the partner's back. Despite elaborate courtship the actual spermatophore transfer, which always involved two animals only, was of short duration. In most matings (88%) spermatophores were reciprocally exchanged.

A. glauca was further found to be very promiscuous. During mating and sperm transfer the receiver exerts considerable control over sperm, and manipulative behaviours designed to increase the donor's reproductive success are thus likely to have evolved. An example of such manipulative behaviour may be A. glauca's unique spermatophore avoidance behaviour. I found that slugs carrying a sign of previous mating activity, i.e. a spermatophore, were discriminated against in a situation where mate choice was possible. The presence of spermatophores was further found to reduce slugs' ability to interrupt matings, and displace other slugs. Body size, however, had no direct effect on displacement in A. glauca as small slugs interrupted matings as successfully as large ones. Furthermore, pair formation and mating were found to be random with respect to size. This was true also for pairs formed in the field.

In addition to mate choice hermaphrodites may increase their reproductive success by differential sex allocation. I tested whether differing mate encounter rates had any effects on allocation to male and female function in A. glauca. Slugs with more mating opportunities mated more, and had higher proportional spermatophore production that others. As predicted they also laid significantly fewer eggs than slugs presented with partners less often.

This thesis explores Julia Ward Howe's unfinished manuscript, The Hermaphrodite (2004). In order to establish a foundation, this thesis begins by approaching The Hermaphrodite through lenses that connect to Howe's life and times. The biographical, feminist, and gothic approaches analyze the effects of personal conflicts, gender concerns, and setting nuances on the manuscript. The analysis of previous treatment of hermaphrodites provides background on ambiguous protagonists. Ultimately, this thesis expands upon and diverges from preceding scholarship, and it establishes a new perspective through which to view the hermaphroditic protagonist, Laurence. This thesis argues that Howe's Laurence can be read as are-visioned Christ figure. His/her physical description is strikingly reminiscent of the accounts of Jesus's appearance. Both Jesus and Laurence are entwined with pious symbols. Laurence is intrinsically connected to the purity of the cross. Most importantly, Laurence and Jesus both gallantly endure burdens and selflessly sacrifice themselves for others while transiently inhabiting earth before returning to heaven. Laurence is an unexpected and reinvented savior.

Streszczenie:
Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the most widely used substrate in methane digestion. Among plants with a high yield potential, Sida hermaphrodita is particularly noteworthy, due to Sida can be grown on low quality soils and its utilization for energy purposes is not competitive with food crops. Methane fermentation of biomass with such a complex structure usually requires application of pre-treatment methods for efficient utilization of its cellulose and hemicellulose. It is economically justified to control of digestate if substrate was efficiently used. The study aimed to measure biogas potential of digestate after fermentation of Sida hermaphrodita silage. The post-fermentation of two samples of digestate from the reactors operated at organic compounds loading 2 kg/(m3∙d) – S1 and 3 kg/(m3∙d) – S2 was performed. Hydraulic retention time in these reactors was 50 d and 33 d, respectively. Biogas potential of fermented sludge was measured with the use of AMPTS II (Bioprocess control). Biogas production was 0.012 L/g TS and 0.031 L/g TS from digestate’s S1 and S2, respectively. The methane content in biogas was 15% from digestate S1 and 50% from digestate S2. The obtained results suggest that digestate from reactor with organic compounds loading of 3 kg/(m3∙d) still has high biogas potential, and hydraulic retention time in this reactor should be prolonged.

In the lower Dniester, polyploid females of the hybrid complex Cobitis taenia are a portion spawning species with asynchronous development of germ cells during the entire breeding period. The spawning season in this water basin begins in the second decade of May and ends in July. In the population, in parallel with females, hermaphrodite individuals are also present, in which the ovary zone is functional, and the testis zone is sterile. A decrease in the relative mass of the gonads of subsequent generations was noted, which leads to a consistent decrease in the value of the gonadosomatic index, in females, before the second and third spawning.

Streszczenie:
The study aimed to determine the influence of addition of Sida hermaphrodita silage into cattle forage on efficiency of methane fermentation of cattle manure. Efficiency of methane fermentation connected with amount and composition of produced biogas was determined with respirometric tests. Methane fermentation was performed in mesophilic conditions with initial organic compounds loading of 5 g VS/(dm3∙d). The study was divided into two stages. In first stage, substrate in methane fermentation was only cattle manure. In second stage, substrate in methane fermentation was cattle manure and Sida silage. There were three series of experiments in each stage, due to cattle manure was obtained from cattle fed with forage differ in contribution of Sida silage (0 – series 1, 17% - series 2, 34% - series 3). In the stage 1, biogas production of 223±15 L/kg VS, 247±8.5 L/kg VS and 231±18 L/kg VS was noted in the series 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The addition of Sida silage to the cattle forage had no impact on biogas potential of cattle manure. In the stage 2, the same tendency was observed. No differences in biogas composition between series were also observed. Methane content in biogas was about 60%.

Streszczenie:
Metaphor reflects the notions of (de)nomination of „things”. Trite (dead) metaphors represent words subject to „blunting” of the image. These are no longer considered as genuine metaphors, being subject to the process of demetaphorization. We refer, in particular, to trite metaphors, formed in Latin and Greek, and taken over by specialized languages. In the present article, trite metaphors from the perspective of mythical love will be analyzed. Many terms were formed based on Latin and Greek etymologies from the sphere of mythical love (actions, qualities, deities, etc.). Thus, the terms: aphrodisiac (< Greek aphrodisiakos „relating to love”), hermaphrodite (< Geek Hermes + < Greek Aphrodite), narcissism (< French narcissisme < Greek Narkissos < Greek narke „numb”), etc. have mythical characters as a starting point, while some terms have a less perceptible connection with mythical love: for example, venom (< Latin venenum, i, n „liquor of love, drug”); echo (< Greek echo „sound”), etc. Keywords: trite metaphor, love, mythology, terms, demetaphorization.

Streszczenie:
Monoecious species such as melon and cucumber develop separate male and female (or bisexual) flowers on the same plant individual. They display complex genetic and hormonal regulation of sex patterns along the plant. Ethylene is known to play an important role in promoting femaleness and inhibiting male development, but many questions regarding critical sites of ethylene production versus perception, the relationship between ethylene and the sex determining loci, and the possible differences between melon and cucumber in this respect are still open. The general goal of the project was to elucidate the role of ethylene in determining flower sex in Cucumis species, melon and cucumber. The specific Objectives were: 1. Clone and characterize expression patterns of cucumber genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis and perception. 2. Genetic mapping of cloned genes and markers with respect to sex loci in melon and cucumber. 3. Produce and analyze transgenic melons altered in ethylene production or perception. In the course of the project, some modifications/adjustments were made: under Objective 2 (genetic mapping) a set of new mapping populations had to be developed, to allow better detection of polymorphism. Under Objective 3, cucumber transformation systems became available to us and we included this second model species in our plan. The main findings of our study support the pivotal role of ethylene in cucumber and melon sex determination and later stages of reproductive development. Modifying ethylene production resulted in profound alteration of sex patterns in melon: femaleness increased, and also flower maturation and fruit set were enhanced, resulting in earlier, more concentrated fruit yield in the field. Such effect was previously unknown and could have agronomic value. Our results also demonstrate the great importance of ethylene sensitivity in sex expression. Ethylene perception genes are expressed in sex-related patterns, e.g., gynoecious lines express higher levels of receptor-transcripts, and copper treatments that activate the receptor can increase femaleness. Transgenic cucumbers with increased expression of an ethylene receptor showed enhanced femaleness. Melons that expressed a defective receptor produced fewer hermaphrodite flowers and were insensitive to exogenous ethylene. When the expression of defective receptor was restricted to specific floral whorls, we saw that pistils were not inhibited by the blocked perception at the fourth whorl. Such unexpected findings suggest an indirect effect of ethylene on the affected whorl; it also points at interesting differences between melon and cucumber regarding the mode of action of ethylene. Such effects will require further study. Finally, our project also generated and tested a set of novel genetic tools for finer identification of sex determining genes in the two species and for efficient breeding for these characters. Populations that will allow easier linkage analysis of candidate genes with each sex locus were developed. Moreover, effects of modifier genes on the major femaleness trait were resolved. QTL analysis of femaleness and related developmental traits was conducted, and a comprehensive set of Near Isogenic Lines that differ in specific QTLs were prepared and made available for the private and public research. Marker assisted selection (MAS) of femaleness and fruit yield components was directly compared with phenotypic selection in field trials, and the relative efficiency of MAS was demonstrated. Such level of genetic resolution and such advanced tools were not used before to study these traits, that act as primary yield components to determine economic yields of cucurbits. In addition, this project resulted in the establishment of workable transformation procedures in our laboratories and these can be further utilized to study the function of sex-related genes in detail.
