The ‘spatial turn’ in education policy studies fuelled interest in Lefebvre’s work: initially, in his work Production of Space and, more recently, Rhythmanalysis and Right to the City. Yet, although in these texts Lefebvre critiques universities and schools and introduces original pedagogical concepts, their educational strands have attracted little attention. Lefebvre’s other works available in English have been largely overlooked in education literature. As France’s first Professor of Sociology, Lefebvre was passionately engaged with education: in particular, teaching, competing for government grants and leading student activism. Critiques of education are threaded through Lefebvre’s three-volume Critique of Everyday Life, his writings on architecture and anthologies. Lefebvre’s work, The Explosion, is surprisingly neglected. A critique of French universities, it analyses student protests across Paris in 1968 – events in which Lefebvre was a leading activist. In geography and philosophy there are burgeoning secondary literatures on Lefebvre. Laying groundwork for such a literature in education, I survey Lefebvre’s references to education in all the works available in English. Arguing that Lefebvre was an educational thinker in his own right, this paper sketches a ‘roadmap’ for educational readings of Lefebvre’s prolific and largely sociological writing. This paper falls into three parts. The first uncovers core Marxist and phenomenological foundations of Lefebvre’s critiques of universities and schools. Building on these, it introduces Lefebvre’s pedagogical concepts. The second part contextualises these in relation to ‘New’ (or ‘Progressive’) education movements at ‘critical moments’ of 20th-century history. It includes a case study of one such moment – the 1968 Parisian student uprising – then outlines Lefebvre’s summation of education in the late 20th century. The third part draws together four ‘Lefebvrian’ pedagogical principles and considers their relevance today. Educational readings of Lefebvre, I suggest, can help educationists identify ‘cracks or interstices’ in ‘technocratic rationality’, suggesting strategies for resisting contemporary neo-liberal regimes.

This is the first issue of an academic journal, of which I am aware, to focus on Henri Lefebvre and urban planning. Urban spatial planning evolved as a concept to integrate the complex social, economic, environmental, political and land use conundrums of late 20th century society. Similarly, the spatial ideas of Henri Lefebvre encompass these issues but stress the importance of everyday life, production, culture and history. This thematic issue of Urban Planning is predicated principally on three of Lefebvre’s major works: The Production of Space (Lefebvre, 1974/1991), Critique of Everyday Life (Lefebvre, 1947/1991) and The Urban Revolution (Lefebvre, 1970/2003). Lefebvre’s ideas regarding the investigation of cities and urban society have been taken up most vigorously in the fields of geography, urban studies and latterly architecture. Despite this, it is clear that Lefebvre’s five central concepts—the production of space, abstract space, everyday life, the right to the city and planetary urbanisation—provide powerful tools for the examination of urban planning, cities and urban society in the Global North and South. Anglophone urban planning first embraced Lefebvre’s ideas in the 1980s. Surprisingly then, it is only in the last ten years or so that urban planning academia and research has witnessed a blossoming of interest in Lefebvre’s ideas.

Die Aufstände im Mai 1968 in Paris haben Henri Lefebvre in seinen theoretischen Überlegungen beflügelt. Studierende und Arbeitende trafen sich auf den Straßen, um gemeinsam zu protestieren. Für Lefebvre bedeutete das, dass Differenzen – unterschiedliche Bedürfnisse und Kritiken – miteinander verbunden sind und nur kollektiv im Alltag verändert werden können. Diese Eindrücke verdichtete er zunehmend zur Theorie der Produktion des Raumes, die heute noch dabei hilft, räumliche Komplexität und die Möglichkeit von Veränderung zu denken. Besonders fruchtbar, so das Argument dieses Beitrages, wird die Übertragung von Lefebvres Theorie auf heute jedoch, wenn die methodischen und methodologischen Überlegungen feministischer Forscher_innen zu Alltag und Differenz berücksichtigt werden – und Henri Lefebvres Einforderung eines „Rechts auf Stadt“ entsprechend feministisch gedacht wird.

Abstract The complex spatial thinking of Henri Lefebvre and its implications for folkloristics are explored in the context of a fictitious conversation between him and the author as they walk around a small farm in southeastern British Columbia. Aspects of Lefebvre’s position are explored and illustrated using examples from this setting, such as fences and campfire pits. Lefebvre’s tripartite schema for conceptualizing space is articulated during this conversation, foregrounding the importance of the oft-occluded espace vécu (lived space). Viewing this as a dialogic, embodied, open-ended domain of space is shown to be a highly generative and potentially transformative approach to understanding space — an approach which has numerous implications for the study of cultural tradition.

Zusammenfassung Henri Lefebvres Theorien nehmen seit einigen Jahren einen selbstverständlichen Platz in den Stadt- und Raumwissenschaften ein, insbesondere im englischsprachigen Raum. So oft Lefebvre zitiert wird, so oft stiften seine Theorien allerdings auch wegen ihrer Komplexität und sprachlichen Umsetzung Verwirrung. Der vorliegende Beitrag arbeitet zunächst zentrale Begrifflichkeiten Lefebvres auf, um anschließend deren gegenwärtige Relevanz in Bezug auf empirische Stadtforschung und die Theoretisierung von Stadt zu diskutieren. Im Vordergrund der Lefebvre-Rezeption steht neben der Anknüpfung an den Entwurf der Produktion des Raumes auch die These der „Urbanisierung der Gesellschaft“. Dabei bleiben häufig Unklarheiten zwischen den Begriffen „Stadt“ und „Urbanes“ sowie zwischen aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Realitäten und virtuellen Möglichkeiten bestehen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird „Stadt“ eine historische Bedingung, die mit der Industrialisierung weitgehend verschwunden ist. Das „Urbane“ benennt hingegen eine zukünftige, auf Differenzen basierende Gesellschaft. Der Begriff der urbanisierten Gesellschaft ist somit untrennbar mit dem differenziellen Raum verwoben, mit dem sie entsteht. Die Erörterung dieser Thesen stellt die dialektische Bewegung zwischen drei Begriffen als zentralen Zugang zur Anwendung Lefebvres in der Stadt- und Raumforschung heraus und bildet letztlich eine Aktualisierung der Lefebvre’schen Theorien.

Selalu ada perkembangan baru di dalam konteks dialektika teoretis. Artikel ini sendiri bermaksud untuk menjelaskan konsep ruang menurut seorang sosiolog cum filsuf dari Prancis yang bernama Henri Lefebvre. Berbeda dengan penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Thompson (2017), Christian dan Desmiwati (2018), dan Nurhadi et al. (2019) yang berupaya melihat kontekstualisasi konsep ruang Lefebvre dalam fenomena sosiologis, dengan metode penelitian kualitatif analisis deskriptif, artikel ini berupaya untuk menjelaskan konsep ruang menurut Lefebvre per se itu sendiri. Temuan dari artikel ini menunjukkan tiga hal penting yang dapat ditarik dari konsep ruang Lefebvre, yakni produksi ruang di kota, kontestasi konflik ruang, dan partisipasi masyarakat sebagai perwujudan konkret hak atas kota. Abstract : It is important to understand all various concepts of the city and its management in the perspective of urban sociology. There is always new development in the context of theoretical dialectics. This article itself intends to explain the concept of space according to a french sociologist cum philosopher, namely Henri Lefebvre. It takes a different approach of analysis compared with previous research conducted by Thompson (2017), Christian and Desmiwati (2018), and Nurhadi et al. (2019) which intend to contextualize the concept of space according to Lefebvre in various sociological phenomena. Using descriptive analysis within a qualitative method, this article attempts to explain the concept of space according to Lefebvre per se itself. The finding of this article shows three important issues that could be taken from the concept of space offered by Lefebvre. Those are the production of space in a city, contestation of space conflict, and participation of city residents as a manifestation of the concept of right to the city.

It has been largely overlooked that Henri Lefebvre in his book The Production of Space draws heavily upon Lacanian psychoanalytic accounts of the emergence of subjectivity in theorizing political relations, Lefebvre implicitly repudiates at the same time that he builds upon Lacan's distinctions between real, imaginary, and symbolic registers of subjectivity. For Lefebvre, Lacan's registers give primacy to visuality and heterosexualized familial dynamics while lived material, spatial, and political experience arc incidental to subject formation and systems of meaning Lefebvre transforms Lacan's registers by historicizing them in spatially dialectical terms, loosely replacing them with distinct forms of evolutionary spatialities which he calls natural, absolute, and abstract, In the process, he both subverts and reproduces Lacan's paternal–maternal (heterosexual) order. We hold that Lefebvrc's critique provides powerful theoretical tools for understanding how alterity and signification are always and inevitably politically and materially mediated through corporealities and ‘space’. Nonetheless, Lefebvre can only work out his spatial dialectic of history in heterosexist terms: although he usefully identifies maternal–paternal metaphors in different Western social formations over time, he fails to interrogate directly the very hetero-sexuality that gives these metaphors their relational significance and force. In short, he brings us to the brink of a nonheterosexist domain, but never enters it. In this paper then, we outline the striking parallels in the theoretical frameworks of Lefebvre and Lacan in order to illustrate how both theorists focus on gender construction as the fundamental social process through which alterity is achieved. At the same time, we unpack the underlying phallocentrism and heterosexism that sustain their versions of alterity, subjectivity, and agency, in the process showing how Lefebvre deftly undermines the apolitical stance of Lacan. In conclusion, we strive to recuperate the crucial liberatory aspects of Lefebvre's project through considering how we might go on to dislocate received versions of capitalism and sexual difference.

O trabalho visa introduzir o conceito de terrorismo e sociedade terrorista no pensamento de Henri Lefebvre, buscando suas relações com a realidade contemporânea. São assim apresentados alguns conceitos centrais ao pensamento lefebvriano, como vida quotidiana, sociedade burocrática do consumo dirigido e seus mecanismos de coerção, e a questão urbana pensada como espaço de abertura, desdobramento/superação da virtualidade do terrorismo contemporâneo. O texto traz considerações sobre o problema recente do terrorismo, analisando o tempo presente – e a realidade urbana em particular – como sobreposição de terrorismos: dos atentados e da lógica própria de reprodução de uma sociedade super-repressiva. O tema da abertura é discutido então a partir da inspiração lefebvriana e de um diálogo possível com trabalhos recentes de Nestor Garcia Canclini, James Holston e Noam Chomsky.Palavras-chave: terrorismo; sociedade terrorista; questão urbana; Henri Lefebvre. Abstract: The paper aims at introducing Henri Lefebvre’s concepts of terrorism and terrorist society in its relations with the contemporary world. Key Lefebvrian concepts such as everyday life and bureaucratic society of organized consumption and its coercive mechanisms, and the urban society taken as space of openness, a possibility of unfolding/overcoming virtual contemporary terrorism. The paper presents considerations about current terrorist problems by analyzing the present scenario – and the urban society in particular – as a superimposition of terrorism: terror attacks and the logic proper to the reproduction of a super-repressive society. The openness is thus discussed from both a Lefèbvrian conceptual inspiration and a possible dialogue with recent works of Nestor Garcia Canclini, James Holston, and Noam Chomsky. O objetivo deste artigo é tangenciar, em linhas gerais, uma outra chave interpretativa para o estatuto do conceito de urbano na obra de Henri Lefebvre. É, sobretudo, um esforço para tentar encontrar elementos metodológicos utilizados pelo autor que expliquem a intenção por detrás desse conceito. Meu interesse, portanto, é fazer uma geneaologia da definição de urbano em Lefebvre para contribuir para a compreensão do pensamento desse importante filósofo. O conceito de urbano é um dos que mais têm mobilizado debates e controvérsias com relação ao pensamento de Lefebvre, isso porque ele aparece em sua obra com uma abertura muito grande – e não com um fechamento interpretativo. O argumento desenvolvido é que o arranjo conceitual do autor é semelhante à ideia da Dialética como entendida por Adorno, reconhecendo, assim, o estatuto de não conceito para o uso que Lefebvre faz do significante ‘urbano’. Com o objetivo de apresentar as bases de um tratado de sociologia rural segundo o pensamento de Henri Lefebvre, este artigo considera as experiências empíricas e teóricas do sociólogo e filósofo marxista francês, privilegiando o período 1948-1958. Ademais, apresenta argumentos que apontam a importância de uma sociologia rural e o modo como ela permite a compreensão do novo sentido da terra. Primeiramente, são expostas as principais críticas de Lefebvre à sociologia rural empiricista e aplicada. Em seguida, são apontadas as premissas do método regressivo-progressivo, base metodológica do tratado lefebvriano. Somado a isso, há o registro de breves notas sobre a sociologia rural de José de Souza Martins, sociólogo brasileiro que se apoiou em conceitos e categorias de Henri Lefebvre em seus estudos sobre a questão agrária no Brasil. Por fim, é dada ênfase ao pensamento de Henri Lefebvre e as bases de seu tratado que evoca por uma sociologia rural junto a algumas reflexões sobre o novo sentido da terra.

Ce texte propose une réflexion sur la production capitaliste de l’espace. Il présente la théorie d’Henri Lefebvre sur l’espace et tente de mettre en lumière la contribution originale de cet auteur à la compréhension du rapport entre temps et espace dans la reproduction du capitalisme. L’analyse porte plus particulièrement sur le concept d’espace abstrait développé par Lefebvre, dont on retrouve une formulation implicite dans les travaux de Marx, et qui révèle le rôle actif joué par la spatialité dans le procès de valorisation capitaliste. Le concept lefebvrien d’espace abstrait jette ainsi les bases d’une remise en question du primat accordé au temps dans la tradition d’analyse critique du capitalisme. Le texte se conclut par de brèves réflexions sur l’actualité d’une telle conception de l’espace pour saisir la récente financiarisation du capital.

Visa-se à explicitação de uma teoria e um conceito de representação que possam fundamentar uma abordagem cultural e multidimensional para a Geografia, articulando os campos da dialética e da fenomenologia. A articulação entre fenomenologia e dialética justifica-se neste contexto como uma necessidade de método para a compreensão dos processos de produção do espaço na contemporaneidade, como fundamento para uma Geografia dos Espaços Vividos.</p>

O argumento central é que Lefebvre elabora um projeto teórico-prático que tem como finalidade a revolução do espaço, a qual teria um alcance mais amplo e mais profundo que a revolução urbana, sem excluí-la. Para mudar a vida, seria necessário revolucionar o espaço por meio da produção de um novo espaço. Frequentemente o trabalho de Henri Lefebvre é admitido como extensão capaz de iluminar o pensamento de Marx ou como uma porta de entrada para a compreensão da dialética, contudo essa via está repleta de armadilhas. O tratamento da dialética lefebvriana como continuidade imediata e aplicação rigorosa do que já estava inscrito em Marx é uma delas. A nem tão pouco usual identificação das tríades de Lefebvre com a estrutura triádica da dialética hegeliana é outra. Nesse sentido, este artigo busca apresentar os aspectos da morfologia e da estrutura do pensamento dialético de Henri Lefebvre marcando a especificidade radical que faz parte da forma como o autor reelabora o material que lhe foi herdado para a composição de novas bases para o pensamento crítico.

Este texto apresenta algumas reflexões sobre a tríade “percebido-vivido-concebido”, desenvolvida pelo filósofo francês Henri Lefebvre. Deste autor, utilizamos dois livros, a saber, “Espace et Politique” (1972) e “La Production de l’Espace” (1974). A tríade lefebvriana é produtora e, ao mesmo tempo, influenciada pelo cotidiano; as três categorizações propostas, embora separadas, ocorrem concomitantemente na produção do espaço, seja ele percebido, vivido ou concebido. A partir dos dois livros citados, fazemos uma exposição sobre isto que Lefebvre denomina de “dialética da tríade”, e que nos ajuda a pensar a sociedade a partir das várias vicissitudes do cotidiano. Neste texto, apresentamos ainda algumas informações biográficas sobre Henri Lefebvre, situando-o como um filósofo neomarxista, profundamente influenciado pelos acontecimentos do século XX.

Este texto tem como objetivo apresentar um estudo introdutório ao pensamento espacial do filósofo francês Henri Lefebvre. Este filósofo possui uma extensa obra, que engloba variados temas contemplados pela Filosofia e, aqui, iremos nos pautar, notadamente, em sua tríade dialética sobre o conceito de espaço, esquematizando suas categorias conceituais e discutindo-as quando oportuno. Assim, os conceitos de espaço absoluto, espaço abstrato e espaço diferencial serão apresentados, acompanhados de seus respectivos pares dialéticos. Denne artikel tager udgangspunkt i fremkomsten af nye kritikformer i forhold til byudviklingen og den beskedne artikulering heraf inden for den mere etablerede, akademiske bykritik. Det argumenteres, at det ofte positive og eksperimenterende afsæt i førstnævnte udgør et konstruktivt supplement til sidstnævntes ofte negative kritik af eksisterende magtforhold. Den franske filosof Henri Lefebvres begrebsliggørelse af byen og den sociale rumlighed, der faktisk indgår som inspiration i en stor del af den nye, urbane kritik, fremdrages som en væsentlig mulighed for at etablere kritikken yderligere inden for den akademiske bykritik. Særligt relevant for en sådan etablering er det, Lefebvre betegner transduktion: Den løbende udforskning af (u)muligheder gennem konstruktionen af utopiske, virtuelle objekter i dialog med samtidige alternative grupperinger. Lefebvres kritik af den sociale rumlighed fremstilles i artiklen som kulminationen på hans konstruktion af en virtuel, differentiel rumlighed. Lefebvres relatering af dette virtuelle objekt til tendenser til fordrejende genfortolkninger af det samtidige Paris’ rumlighed fremhæves både som en direkte pointering af det kritiske potentiale i sådanne eksperimenterende praksisser og som symptom på begrænsninger i Lefebvres utopiske perspektiv. Artiklen præsenterer derfor afslutningsvis tre nyere eksponenter for en urban, eksperimenterende kritik: Luc Lévesque, Panu Lehtovuori og Pascal Nicolas-Le Strat. ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Jan Lilliendahl Larsen: An Urban Critique – Contributions from Lefebvre and More Recent Urbanists This article discusses the appearance of new forms of critique of urban development as well as the moderate articulation hereof in the more established academic critique. It argues that the often positive position of the former constitutes a constructive supplement to the negative critique of existing power relations in the latter. Lefebvre’s transductive method is particularly relevant here with its ongoing prospecting of (im)possibilities through the construction of utopian, virtual objects in dialogue with contemporary, alternative groups. Lefebvre’s critique of social space is seen as the culmination of his construction of a virtual differential space. It stresses his articulation of this virtual object in relation to diversionary reinterpretations of the contemporaneous social space of Paris, both as a direct underlining of the critical potential in experimental practices and as a symptom of the limitations of his utopian perspective. To complement his perspective, three more recent exponents of an experimenting urban critique are discussed: Luc Lévesque, Panu Lehtovuori and Pascal Nicolas-Le Strat.

Para isto, propõe com o presente trabalho a análise do método regressivo-progressivo do filósofo Henri Lefebvre como possibilidade para o estudo das cidades médias. Apesar do método ter sido lançado, à priori, como investigação da sociologia rural, outras camadas das ciências sociais vêm se apropriando dele, inclusive a Geografia Urbana. In considering medium-sized cities beyond their demographic size, there is a multiplicity in their distinct functions and temporalities that coexist, as well as a series of analytical and dialectical pairs in their daily lives. For this, it proposes with the present work the analysis of the regressive-progressive method of the philosopher Henri Lefebvre as a possibility for the study of the medium-sized e cities. Although the method has been launched, first, as an investigation of rural sociology, other layers of the social sciences have been appropriating it, including Urban Geography. Este artículo parte de la consideración del concepto de “espacio social” como clave constructiva, comprensiva e interpretativa del conjunto de la obra de Henri Lefebvre. Por consiguiente, se expone la genealogía del proyecto lefebvriano de “espaciología” (o análisis de la producción social del espacio social) y su importancia para el pensamiento crítico contemporáneo. A la par, se esclarece el fuerte ascendiente que tienen los planes de la crítica de la economía política, de Marx, en la pregunta lefebvriana por el espacio social y, consecuentemente, en la cuestión del desafío histórico que implica el dominio capitalista del espacio y las posibilidades de su emancipación. Finalmente, se caracteriza el alcance de la determinación nodal del concepto lefebvriano de espacio social: la “reproducción de las relaciones sociales de producción”. Ideas destacadas: artículo de reflexión que presenta avances de una investigación doctoral sobre el concepto de espacio social, de Henri Lefebvre, y el proyecto lefebvriano de una “espaciología” o analítica del espacio social y de su producción.
