Streszczenie:
Solubility of phytochemicals is a major concern for drug delivery, permeability, and their biological response. However, advancements in the novel formulation technologies have been helping to overcome these challenges. The applications of these newer technologies are easy for commercialization and high therapeutic outcomes compared to conventional formulations. Considering these facts, the present study is aimed to prepare a silymarin-loaded eutectic mixture with three different ratios of Polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30) and evaluating their anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective effects. The preliminary phytochemical and characterization of silymarin, physical mixture, and solid dispersions suggested and successfully confirmed the formation of solid dispersion of silymarin with PVP K30. It was found that the solubility of silymarin was increased by 5-fold compared to pure silymarin. Moreover, the in vitro dissolution displayed that 83% of silymarin released within 2 h with 2.8-fold increase in dissolution rate compared to pure silymarin. Also, the in vivo study suggested that the formulation significantly reduced the carbon tetrachloride- ( 0.8620 ± 0.05034 ∗ ∗ for 1 : 3 ratio), paracetamol- ( 0.7300 ± 0.01517 ∗ ∗ for 1 : 3 ratio), and ethanol- ( 0.8100 ± 0.04037 ∗ ∗ for 1 : 3 ratio) induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Silymarin solid dispersion was prepared using homogenization methods that have prominent anti-inflammatory effect ( 0.6520 ± 0.008602 ∗ ∗ with 8.33%) in carrageenan-induced rat paw model.

Streszczenie:
Background:Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) is the new way to indicate what was previously known as “Pet Therapy”, as activities can be done either with the conventional “pets” (dogs, cats and rabbits) or with horses and donkeys.Children with JIA have several problems in terms of adherence both due to the atavistic fear of the needle and due to nausea and vomiting - the most important side effects of Methotrexate – often since the 2-3 days before the assumption to immediately after it.Sure that animals can help children to forget this fear and to avoid the psycological conditions which enhance nausea, for the first time in Italy (and probably in Europe) it was designed a specific AAI program for these children. Objectives:To promote a general state of psycho-physical well-being in children and families about:manage of therapy; reduce discomfort and anxiety caused by entering hospital; improve self-esteem and the response to the stress generated by the execution of therapy and disease management; strengthen communication and socialization; stimulate the affective area through the activities of animal care. Methods:Dogs and cats are part of the recreational activities once a week in an equipped area in the OIRM Hospital (no alternative gateway was needed).Paediatric Rheumatologists selected two different groups of children: the first one (5 children in the pilot study) every 15 days; the second one (5 children) every month; the selection was made looking at the therapeutic scheme.Every session, one hour, has 3 clearly distinct stages:Welcome and organization: children say hello to dogs and cats, open the toolkits specifically designed for the intervention, express their state of mind and are encouraged to tell their own stories.Therapy:parents prepare and inject the drug to their children under medical or Health Professional control without discontinuation of the activities with animals.Play and socializing:children are involved in petting and other activities with animals; they are also involved in manipulative activities (design, puppets shows, modelling clay, animal care, ball retriving, etc). This step has the aim to relieve stress and discomfort due to medical procedures.Visual Analogic Scales (VAS) were part of the toolkit, to let the researchers evaluate the effects of the activity directly from the children experience. For the first time, we will control also the animal health status and wellness condition monitoring behavioural parameters and salivary cortisol level during each session. Results:The pilot project started in October 2019 and nowaday we closed 12 meetings, 4 on October, 4 on November, 3 on December and 2 on January, with the participation of 2 dogs (Golden and Labrador Retriever) and 1 cat (Devon Rex) in each one.All children love to play with animals, seek their closeness at the time of therapy and enjoy playing all together with the dogs; no one cry or refuse therapy and, since the third session, no one has nausea before, during or after the injection. Parents have reached a certain level of confidence: they stay quietly in the waiting room or go away to have a drink or to run an errand (it becomes a moment of relaxing for them too).Animals remain in healthy and wellness conditions during the activity. Conclusion:These preliminary data seem that AAI to be useful in helping patients in JIA to overcome some problems related to their pathology.Disclosure of Interests:UGO VIORA: None declared, Patrizia Ponzio: None declared, Maria Teresa Mascarino: None declared, Barbara Picco: None declared, Paolo Guiso: None declared, Eleonora Battista: None declared, Silvana Martino: None declared, Davide Montin Speakers bureau: Not relevant for the topic, Marta Dellepiane: None declared, Germana Rosso: None declared

Although this field of research remains poorly investigated in social psychology, some data indicates that odors modify our judgments, our perceptions, our behaviors, and more particularly our spontaneous helping behaviors (Baron, 1997). In a first series of experiments, we replicated a study aimed at evaluating the effect of a perfumed experimenter (vanilla versus camphor, both pre-tested as pleasant odors) on helping behaviors. In a second series of studies, we experimentally investigated the hypothesis according to which mood is a mediator variable of odors influence on helping behavior, in the foot-in-the-door paradigm without pressure compliance (Freedman & Fraser, 1966) with implicit demand (Uranowitz, 1975). Foot-in-the-door paradigm (cf. meta-analysis) is a well-tested procedure consisting in asking for a small request, and then asking for a larger one. Foot-in-the-door effects are classically interpreted in terms of commitment (Kiesler, 1971) or self-perception (Bem, 1966, 1972). Results obtained in this paradigm give evidence that the foot-in-the-door efficiency is affected by the experimenter’s odor: when the experimenter is perfumed with camphor, classical foot-in-the-door effects are not observed any more. However, the results do not confirm the hypothesis according to which odor influence subject’s mood. Neither the self-perception theory nor the commitment theory can account for these results. Thus, in a third series of experiments, we investigated an alternative interpretation: other people’s odors serve as social informations, which influence helping behaviors, which can cancel, under some requirements, the strong foot-in-the-door effects. An update of a meta-analysis (Burger, 1999), conducted on the data collected over four hundred thousand subjects in a naturalistic setting, lead us to propose an integrative model that would explain the influences of the experimenter’s characteristics on the foot-in-the-door efficiency

Streszczenie:
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and equine-assisted therapy/learning (EAT/L) are innovative techniques in counselling, psychotherapy, mental health, coaching, and other personal growth interventions. Although this field has experienced tremendous growth in the United States, very little is known about its Canadian equivalent. The purpose of this study was therefore to examine the current state of AAT and EAT/L in Canada, by conducting a national, bilingual (English and French) survey of helping professionals who involve animals in their practices. A total of 131 questionnaires were retained for analysis. The results of this study suggest that the field is very diverse, with a multitude of confusing terms and expressions, varying levels of education and training, and disagreement on how different practices are defined, resulting in a fragmented, confusing and inconsistent appearance. Recommendations for the evolution of the field and suggestions for future research are provided.

AbstractDuring the strict COVID restrictions in 2020, the ‘Critical Theory, Education and Social Work Reading Group’ based at the University of Sydney met via Zoom to discuss Raewyn Connell’s The good university (2019). The crisis faced by higher education institutions—set against broader social and political crises triggered by the pandemic—was the palpable backdrop for discussions. Drawing on examples offered by pioneering universities and educational reformers around the world, Connell outlines a vision for making universities more engaging and more productive places, driven by social good rather than profit, and helping to build fairer societies.Connell’s book generated a rich stream of reflections and responses, especially from postgraduate students who are in a liminal space in the global higher education industry. They are often both students and precariously employed staff; both visible as sources of income for universities and invisible as its workers; both already within the university system and uncertain if they will remain. In this chapter, three (former) postgraduates of the reading group—Meenakshi Krishnaraj, Ren-Hao Leo Xu, and Pat Norman—engage with Connell on university teaching, research, and professional work, respectively. Each in their own way raises the question: How can we reimagine ‘the good university’?

AbstractThis article analyses aspects related to the implementation of advanced technology systems in Public Administration, taking into account the scope of action of its entities and services, as well as its main distinction with the private sector, which lies in the pursuit of the public interest, understood as justification for the execution of public policies, but also in the broader scope of the human development index. The difficulties and resistance to the adoption and use of technology in Public Administration will be examined, also in the light of practical situations whose implementation proved to be inadequate, resulting in the analysis of ideas for the future. We approach the evolution of public management models that are emerging through the action of technology. We prepare the ground for machine ethics in Public Administration by framing ethics in public services in general terms, with reference to AI systems designed in line with mainstream ethics. Of the various ethical issues that arise in this domain, we pay attention to the issue of privacy and the balance that needs to be achieved so that the use of data can contribute to ethical, beneficial and reliable technologies. We sound alerts in the field of discrimination and prejudice that the bias of technology can show. The explainability and transparency of technological systems provide confidence to decision-makers and citizens, helping to clarify responsibilities in the decisions of Public Administration agents, and the researchers working for them .

Streszczenie:
Abstract: This chapter outlines what clinicians can do to help and support clients managing microaggressions. Ten steps are offered to help therapists respond effectively. Detailed examples of listening to a client of color who has experienced a microaggression, supporting a client of color who experienced a microaggression, and processing microaggressions experienced by a client of color are provided. Ongoing microaggressions can lead people of color to engage in maladaptive coping, such as remaining in denial, engaging in substance use, aggression, and self-blame; thus, it is important for therapists to recognize these and support clients to instead engage in adaptive and proactive coping strategies. A therapist can also support clients in how to respond effectively to microaggressions in their daily lives. It is not always possible or safe to respond to a microaggression, but clients should be encouraged to respond if they are able to do so safely. Strategies include making the microaggression more visible, disarming the microaggression, and educating the offender. Another way therapists can help is by encouraging and supporting clients in the exploration of their ethnoracial identities to help improve overall psychological well-being. However, therapists should pay careful attention if a client is unwilling to discuss microaggressions; rather than take it personally or pathologize the client, the therapist should openly acknowledge and validate the client’s mistrust. Microaggression discussion scenarios are outlined to help therapists; these scenarios include profiling by law enforcement, academic conflict, practicum student dress code conflict, and classroom confusion.

Abstract Since the passage of child abuse and neglect reporting laws in the early 1970s, the scope, size, and complexity of child protective services has increased tremendously. The rapid growth in the field and the significant effects of interventions have created an environment in which fellow practitioners, funding sources (government and private), and the general public are demanding accountability for decisions made and actions taken. Being accountable means accepting responsibility for performance, such as being able to show measurable ways in which CPS interventions make a difference, what works to assure safety for children, how permanency is achieved, or how we improve the well-being of children and families. Increasingly, we must pay attention to the consistency of decisions, to service availability, to cost justification, and to achieving results. Our ability to help children and families depends on our effectiveness as CPS professionals who recognize that part of doing a good job is being accountable.

Abstract The cacophony that Monroe H. Rosenfeld of the New York Herald heard on West 28th Street between Sixth Avenue and Broadway reminded him of rattling tin pans. He thus christened the area, which was occupied by sheet-music publishers, as “Tin Pan Alley.” Songs were made popular through minstrel or variety shows, and once they were popular, the sheet music publishers would publish the songs. Composers and performers went to the music publishers to find ways to get the music to the public. This chapter explores the role of Tin Pan Alley, music pluggers, and composers/lyricists in helping to turn these songs into popular songs.

Abstract The cost of cancer care is rising because of increasing age, more cancer cases, increased demand for treatment, and new expensive technologies. Our limited resources must be rationed wisely so that we can provide both curative and palliative care. The ethical implications of using economic and management outcomes rather than traditional health outcomes include shifting emphasis from helping at all cost to helping at a cost society can afford, how much society is willing to pay, the value of care to the dying versus those with curable illnesses, and tolerance of suboptimal care.

In this paper, we present the parallelization of a sequential functional implementation of a Monte Carlo Transport Problem, called MCP-Haskell[Hammes et al., 1995], using Haskell#. This experiment gave us important feedback for evaluating Haskel# features, helping us to answer some questions, like how expressive is Haskel# for representing known parallel computational patterns, how easy it is to build large scale parallel programs in an elegant and concise way, and how efficient are Haskell# programs. Based on our conclusions, we suggest new features to be incorporated in Haskel# to improve its expressiveness and performance. We also present the performance figures for the MCP-Haskell# benchmark.

In the transition to a post pandemic world, educational institutions are faced with the challenge of helping to build a more responsive and robust education system in the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous present and future. This requires critical reflection on lessons learned during the pandemic, reimagining the future of higher education as well as institutional directions, and adopting new strategies for development. This session describes a program to build the capacity of Philippine colleges and universities in this important work. // The Sustainable Institution Building for Open Learning (SIBOL) initiative, as it is called, aims to provide participating higher education institutions with training and mentoring in planning, managing, and sustaining blended, online, and open learning (BOL) programs. Phase 1 of SIBOL consists of seven online training modules, delivered synchronously and asynchronously, on planning BOL programs; systems for BOL materials development, technology management, faculty development, and student support; quality assurance; and research and innovation for sustainability of BOL. Phase 2 is a mentoring program for participating institutions as they implement their BOL institutional strategy. This second phase also aims to strengthen institutional collaboration and networking towards building the open and distance learning ecosystem in the Philippines. // In this paper, early findings from the design, development, and pilot implementation of SIBOL are discussed. SIBOL was conceptualized as UPOU’s pilot project under the EU-funded Advancing Equity and Access to Higher Education through Open and Distance Learning (BUKA) project.

The Covid-19 pandemic affected educational systems all over the world, leading to shift from face-to-face teaching-learning to a system of emergency remote learning. There are many studies that have examined the impact of these developments on conventional education as well as open and distance learning (ODL) systems. The present study is a transnational study of learners engaged in professional development in ODL institutions of India and Guyana. The study investigates comparative learner experiences with respect to four dimensions namely, quality of technology, engagement with teachers, student-student dialogue, and education-work-life balance while studying through virtual mode including in a cross-border learning scenario. // The study is a descriptive survey using a mixed mode methodology. The sample comprised 60 learners from India and Guyana enrolled in the Post Graduate Diploma in Distance Education (PGDDE) programme offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University, India. The findings revealed that there were commonalities among learners in India and Guyana. Learners found live counseling sessions more engaging and interactive. It was seen that social media played a positive role in connecting learners during the pandemic and helping them to form their own learning communities. Learners in both countries felt that the education-work-life balance was disturbed during the pandemic. However there was determination among all learners to complete their online professional development programmes. This study will contribute to leveraging learners’ experiences for formulating future policy and designing practices for continuing professional development in developing countries for achieving SDG 4 for quality education.

Bedari is a rights based NGO working in Pakistan for promotion and protection of human rights of women and girls. Girls’ Secondary Education is one of the core themes Bedari works on. Bedari believes that education is not only about acquiring a degree or a certificate, it is about the life skills and about knowledge around the rights and the capacity to claim them. Bedari, during the last fifteen years, has supported 1000s of girls to continue their education by enhancing their mobility, helping them strengthen their life skills and asserting their agency. During this, Bedari has gained marvelous understandings of community perspectives and barriers to girls’ education at community and policy levels. Bedari has learnt that a small contribution towards enhancing girls’ mobility not only ensures their access to education, but also contributes in their empowerment, reduces the incidence of child marriages and enables them to deal with gender based violence. // Session Objectives: // Demonstrate how small contributions in girls’ mobility and self-growth through community engagement can empower them and ensures access to education. // Share the good practices of working with government to enhance girls’ secondary education // Showcasing key learning around working for educating girls with disabilities // After a short presentation on the context of Girls’ Education in Pakistan, the moderator will invite the panelists for the discussion. Discussion will be in the form of a talk show. The questions will be around; their experiences (specifically in COVID Context), opportunities to work around inclusion and equity, challenges and their mitigation, and key takeaways. The panelists from different stakeholders including civil society, donor organization and government expert will be a great mix to provide the audience an insight on above mentioned themes from different perspectives. It will provide an opportunity to the participants from different countries to explore the possibilities of replication in their context.

Streszczenie:
The recent rise in voluntary turnover has sparked a renewed focus on attracting and retaining talent. In their attempts to stem the tide of the Great Resignation, organizations are augmenting traditional retention strategies – e.g., higher pay, enhanced benefits, more opportunities for career advancement etc. – with remote and hybrid work schedules brought about by the COVID pandemic. Given its inherent appeal to both employees and organizations, leadership development (LD) opportunities have long been believed to play a crucial role in helping to attract and retain employees. While the body of existing correlational research does point to a positive relationship between LD opportunities and retention, there is scant research that elucidates the mechanism(s) that may help to bridge the two. Guided by existing research, this paper examined Center for Creative Leadership’s large database of program evaluation data to uncover those potential mechanisms. We found preliminary support for three specific outcomes of leadership development that may serve as potential mediators linking LD with retention; they include enhanced self-efficacy, meaningful connections, and capacity to engage followers. We conclude with implications of these findings for future research as well as some caveats related to our investigation.
