Streszczenie:
The article is dedicated to the famous reform of Kharkiv Institute of Arts in 1963. The article provides an overview of the causes and consequences of reform of an ordinary art institute (KSIA) into essentially new Art and Industrial Institute (KAII). The historical and cultural basis of that reform is also examined. For the first time in 60 years of existence of Art and Industrial Institute and its successor, the modern Academy (KSADA), photocopies of documents from KSADA archives are provided reflecting the logic and tools of implementation of that complex and controversial reform. The article features the orders of the rector of KSIA and KAII. Thanks to the analysis of these documents, it is proved that in fact training of art designers in Kharkiv began in October 1962, that is almost a year before the legal registration of KAII. We publish a fragment of Rector M. Shaposhnikov’s report, read at the 21st session of Presidium of Academy of Arts of the USSR (December, 1963), which discussed the initial state of industrial art education in Kharkiv. Particular attention is paid to the problem of qualitative renewal of the KAII teaching staff, which began in 1967, when the first art designers graduated. The central place in the publication is given to the person of Mykhailo Shaposhnikov (1909–1987), rector of Kharkiv Art Institute of that time. Portrait of personality of the then Rector of KSADA is given: as a person, as a head of an institute, as an experienced manager. There are some recollections of eyewitnesses of that reform and of the rector himself. The final part of the article says that the 1963 reform was the bifurcation point from which the development of modern Kharkiv art school began, in which all the “muses of art” and modern directions of creativity are represented. The article ends with a rather rhetorical question: “Could the modern Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts exist if not for creative determination and some managerial adventurism of Rector M. Shaposhnikov?...”.

Streszczenie:
Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) is one of the essential mediating factors of exercise-induced neuroplasticity, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of exercise-induced neuroplasticity are still largely unknown. Personality dimensions differentiate individuals and depend on genes and environmental factors. The dimensions of openness to experience, emotional stability, extraversion and conscientiousness have been reported to be positively related to performance; considering agreeableness, a negative relation with sports performance was emphasized. However, not enough effort has been put into investigating the relationship between genetic polymorphisms affecting psychological abilities and competitive power sports. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of the rs6265 polymorphism of BDNF with personality dimensions in martial arts athletes. The study was conducted among martial arts athletes. The study group included 258 volunteers (martial arts athletes (n = 106) and controls (n = 152). BDNF polymorphism testing was performed using the real-time PCR method; personality dimensions were assessed using standardized NEO-FFI questionnaires. All analyses were performed using STATISTICA 13. We observed that martial arts athletes’ G/G genotypes compared to the control group G/G genotypes presented significantly higher severity of personality dimension “conscientiousness”. In comparison with the controls, the case group subjects had significantly higher scores in the dimension extraversion (M 6.89 vs. M 6.43, p = 0.0405) and conscientiousness/scale (M 7.23 vs. M 5.89, p < 0.0001). The results of 2 × 3 factorial ANOVA noticed a statistically significant effect of combined factor BDNF rs6265 genotype of martial arts/control (F2,252 = 3.11, p = 0.0465, η2 = 0.024). Additionally, we observed that the results of 2 × 3 factorial ANOVA showed a statistically significant influence of combined factor BDNF rs6265 of genotype martial arts/ control (F2,252 = 6.16, p = 0.0024, η2 = 0.047). The combination of the analysis of personality dimensions with genetics—as in the case of the polymorphism of the BDNF gene related to neuroplasticity—indicates that neurobiology cannot be ignored in educating sports champions. We already know that this is related to genetics. However, little is still known about the influence of personality traits on sports performance. We observed that martial arts athletes’ G/G genotypes, in comparison to the control group’s G/G genotypes, presented significantly higher severity of personality dimension “conscientiousness”. This is worthy of further analysis and probably longitudinal studies on a more numerous group of athletes.

Streszczenie:
The paper offers to extend the historical time frame of modern cross-media studies formation. The start of this research direction dates not from the 1950-60s, as it is usually considered to be, but from the early 20th century, the ‘synthesis epoch’. Development of neosyncretism was accompanied by creating bright theories in aesthetics and art criticism and promoting the concept of arts’ interaction by the humanities. Three scholars — H. Wolfin, M. Dessoir, and A. Warburg were the pioneers of the modern interdisciplinary research field. The author considers that the range of influences on the cross-media studies in literary criticism should be broadened with the works of philosophers and art critics who started to use the cross-media strategies (not the term itself) when analyzing the works of literature and arts. The leading role belonged to the Iconology school (E. Panofsky, R. Wittkower, E. Gombrich et al.). Their methods were based on applying tools of various disciplines. In the first place, they took into account connections between literature and visual arts. Henceforth, philology interpolated the iconological method into visual and comparative studies. One of the contemporary leading cross-media researchers, W. J. T. Mitchell, named his first book “Iconology: Image, Text, Ideology” (1986). In the middle of the 20th century, philosophy had a considerable influence on the cross-media research formation. In particular, literary critics referred to phenomenology (the works by M. Dufrenne, R. Ingarden. M. Merleau-Ponty) and actualized the analysis of interacting arts once more. A visual turn in culture caused growing attention to the issues of apperceptive cross-sensual experience. The newest works in the fields of perception psychology, gestalt psychology, neurolinguistics, and neurophysiology also support the general cross-media theory. It is possible that, due to the mutual influences of sciences, a uniform platform for studying syncretic phenomena will be created.

In addition to being wickedly smart, David Green had many characteristics that contributed to his great success as a scientist, scholar, mentor, and friend. ERH and family interacted with the Greens over many decades, during sabbatical years, and in travel to exotic places. DM worked with Dave on two major projects—the acoustical reenactment of the JFK assassination, and an NRC committee studying the effects of intense sounds on marine mammals. Recollections will be shared, some true. Dave's work was marked by an unflagging determination to fully understand the problem at hand, and he was amazingly quick at comprehending new information and organizing it into his extraordinary memory. While current and future generations of scientists will remember him for the paradigm shift that his work produced in experimental psychology and neuroscience, those of us who knew him personally will remember an honest, generous, kind, and unpretentious fellow who was just as knowledgeable about sports, art, and current events as about science. We also will not forget that he was a truly fun guy who enjoyed nothing better than a good joke about the world's foibles or about his own notorious frugality.

Purpose: to study the influence of recreational aerobics classes using exercises from various types of martial arts on the level of physical fitness of female students. Material and methods. The following methods were used to achieve the aim of the study: analysis and synthesis of scientific and methodological literature, pedagogical experiment, method of control exercises (testing), pedagogical observation, methods of mathematical statistics. The study involved 1st and 2nd year female students (n=42) attending health aerobics classes. The students were divided into experimental (n=21) and control groups (n=21). Results: the comparison of physical qualities at the beginning of the experiment shows the lack of reliability of differences between them (p>0,05). In the course of the experiment the peculiarities of the methodology of conducting classes in health- improving aerobics were studied. The content of classes for female students was developed with the inclusion of exercises from different types of martial arts. The content included special imitation exercises (hook, jab, uppercut, etc.) and additional equipment from different types of martial arts (boxing, Thai boxing, kickboxing). Classes were held three times a week and lasted 60 minutes. At each lesson, a combination of 64 exercises was learned. The introduction of imitation exercises from different types of martial arts into the health aerobics classes had a positive effect on the results of the repeated testing of female students of the experimental group. At the end of the experiment in exercises of flexion and extension of arms in a lying down support, torso tilt forward from a sitting position and torso raising in a sit for 1 min. the results changed statistically significantly (p<0,001). This can be explained by the fact that martial arts exercises contribute to the development of strength abilities to the greatest extent, and exercises in health aerobics have a significant impact on the development of flexibility. The results in shuttle run 4×9 m, 100 m run and long jump from a place did not undergo significant changes (p>0,05), though there is a small tendency to positive changes. Conclusions. It is established that the use of imitation exercises from different types of martial arts in classes on health-improving aerobics, directed not only on the development of aerobic abilities, but also on mastering and improvement of techniques of movements from boxing, kickboxing and Thai boxing, positively influences the development of physical qualities of female students. It was found that as a result of attending classes, female students had a significant improvement in flexibility and strength of the arms and abdominal press (p<0,001). Indicators of coordination, speed, power and speed abilities also increased, but these changes are not significant (p>0,05). Keywords: health-improving aerobics, martial arts, physical fitness, exercises, complex, imitation, motor abilities.

This study explored the motivational types of English and Arabic language major students at one of the state Islamic universities in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. A questionnaire was given to 30 English and 30 Arabic major students to measure the level and type of students' learning motivation. A five-point Likert scale was used in the questionnaire, and the data were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS software. The results revealed that the English major students had a high integrative motivation in choosing English as their major compared to instrumental motivation (M=3.15˂M=4.19). Similarly, the Arabic major students dominantly had integrative motivation in learning Arabic compared to instrumental motivation (M=3.09˂M=4.29). The results further showed that integrative motivation could bring positive learning outcomes to the students because their goal of learning was to be accepted, and or be part of the language community they were learning. To conclude, English major students were enthused to study English because they wanted to be knowledgeable in English and used it to interact with other speakers of this language. In the same way, Arabic major students were also driven to learn Arabic for the sake of being knowledgeable in Arabic, to use it to interact with other people who use this language and to increase their appreciation towards the Arabic arts and literature. Finally, the findings of this study can increase awareness among students, teachers, researchers, and policymakers who work on enhancing motivation to increase students' interest in learning foreign languages at Indonesian universities.

AbstractAntiquarian and modern excavations at Castor, Cambs., have been taking place since the seventeenth century. The site, which lies under the modern village, has been variously described as a Roman villa, a guild centre and a palace, while Edmund Artis working in the 1820s termed it the ‘Praetorium’. The Roman buildings covered an area of 3.77 ha (9.4 acres) and appear to have had two main phases, the latter of which formed a single unified structure some 130 by 90 m. This article attempts to draw together all of the previous work at the site and provide a comprehensive plan, a set of suggested dates, and options on how the remains could be interpreted.

The article reconstructs the life path of Alexander Timofeevich Neofitov, the first legal representative of A. F. Kumanina. The recreation is based on the memorial, epistolary, biographic and historic resources introduced into scientific discourse. They include the testimonies from the unpublished memoirs of A. M. Dostoevsky, an unreleased letter by A. G. Dostoevskaya to N. N. Strakhov dated October 18, 1881, which characterizes the Kumanin case as “wretched and bewitched” (Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts. Fund 1159. List 6. File 6. Page 1), materials of the well-known Moscow trial of false-coiners, and other criminal cases (“The Jack of Hearts Club. Criminal trial.” 1877). It also comprises the details from the history of Moscow Academy of Commercial Studies, which Aleksei Alekseevich Kunanin had founded and where he served as a trustee. As a professor of World History at the Academy, A. T. Neofitov became one of the key members of the Jack of Hearts Club criminal network. His involvement in various illegal schemes with the Kumanin inheritance was described in Dostoevsky’s novels Crime and Punishment and The Raw Youth. As a result of the inquiry, we can deduce that due to the fraud conducted by Neofitov, who was the ‘enfant terrible’ among the writer’s relatives, the Kumanin inheritance case turned out to be not only “wretched” and “bewitched,” but highly criminalized.

Mihai Ralea was a university professor and prominent representative of the Romanian interwar literary intelligentsia. M. Ralea taught psychology, sociology and aesthetics, and was at the same time the director of a reputed literary magazine (Viaţa românească-Romanian Life). Ralea was also a politician, initially an important member of the National Peasant Party, representing its centre left wing. In his case, one may notice the contradiction between his moral arguments in public and his deeds after he reached positions of power (Minister of Labour under the royal dictatorship, Minister of Arts under the pro-communist Petru Groza government, etc.). Ralea was also called “the moralist without morals”, and the compromises he made – manifested through his adherence to anti-democratic regimes – can be documented by numerous archival documents. Due to strong political connections, Ralea survived in the high ranks of cultural bureaucracy even during cultural Stalinism. He maintained important positions both at the University of Bucharest and with humanities research institutes of the post-1948 Soviet-style Romanian Academy of Sciences. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he also gained posi-tions of international cultural representation with the Romanian branch of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNES-CO) and the Romanian Institute for the Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (IRRCS, the Romanian VOKS). His survival (as a professor of psychology after 1948) had a significant price – Ralea’s collaboration with the Stalinist regime. Using open sources and also newly declassified archival documents, the article is an attempt to approach M. Ralea’s case of survival in the high cultural bureaucracy in the East European context.

This chapter takes a look at how the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts' leadership addressed the issue of the New York Philharmonic lease agreement and the future use of Avery Fisher Hall. Before that could be resolved, however, an incident occurred at the Lincoln Center which distracted its leaders from the merger. Peter M. Lehrer, who had only taken on the chair of the Center's Redevelopment Corporation board nine months earlier, resigned and called the project wasteful and badly managed. Yet remarkably, as various challenges confronted the Center leadership—with the resignations of two Redevelopment Corporation chairs in the span of one year and the continuous infighting threatening the core values that the Center's founders had established in the mid-1950s—the administrative staff of the Center and of the Redevelopment Project doggedly continued to move their venture forward. Levy was clearly committed to significant renovations and Rebecca Robertson had done yeoman's work in maintaining focus despite some very difficult working conditions. The chapter also discusses the architectural team behind the Sixty-Fifth Street to provide new street-level entrances and open the Center to neighboring communities.

Abstract In his extensive study of the charitable foundations of Bons-Enfants, many or most of which provided training in grammar and the liberal arts, J. M. Reitzel regretted the absence of information about the back- ground and careers of the boys who were actually housed or held burses in these institutions. He made this observation in the context of the houses of Bons-Enfants at Paris, which unlike their equivalents in other cities and towns throughout northern France and Belgium housed students preparing for the baccalaureate and master degrees in arts, having already completed their training in grammar. Information, how- ever, on a few scholars who belonged to one of the Bons-Enfants at Paris is extant, and can, in some cases, be combined with other documentation to provide an enriched picture of their careers. This information also sheds light on the administrative structure and financial position of the foundation, its relation to the University of Paris, and the type of young person who belonged to Bons-Enfants. The information is contained in a document describing actions taken at the Collège des Bons-Enfants de Saint-Victor in 1331. This college was the oldest of three houses in Paris that were called Bons-Enfants and was the one Parisians referred to by that name. The second oldest was the Parisian house of the Bons- Enfants d’Arras, a foundation of the bishop of Arras that provided students from that diocese, many of whom were trained in a grammar school of the same name in Arras, with support needed for their subsequent study in the arts faculty at Paris. The third was the house of poor scholars of Saint-Honoré, whose foundation predated that of the Bons-Enfants de Saint-Victor but which did not bear the title Bons-Enfants until the mid- dle or second half of the fourteenth century.

This chapter recounts the history of the founding of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1866 by the American Missionary Association and a trio of its agents: Erastus Milo (E. M.) Cravath, Edward Parmelee Smith, and John Ogden. The school’s educational philosophy emphasized teacher training, theology, training for craft work, and liberal arts. George L. White, hired as treasurer, initiated an informal music program that grew into an avenue for generating profit and promoting Fisk’s educational agenda, thanks to a choir he put together with the assistance of Ella Sheppard, who as music teacher was the first and only black staff member at Fisk from 1870 to 1875. In public, the Fisk choristers sang music from the white popular tradition, known as “people’s song” in the words of composer George Frederick Root. In private they introduced their spirituals to the white teachers, doing so under some duress, as they associated the songs with an enslaved past to be forgotten. Around early 1871 George White began urging the American Missionary Association to let him take his choristers on the road to raise money for the school; the group would be modeled on “singing families” such as the Hutchinson Family Singers. After much debate his plan was approved, and after a few weeks on the road White named his choir the Jubilee Singers. Although initially a dismal failure, the troupe’s rebranding, decision to sing more spirituals and less people’s song, and the patronage of Henry Ward Beecher in Brooklyn led to a reversal of fortune. By early 1872 the Jubilee Singers were on their way to fame and fortune. They presented their concerts as a “service of song,” to remind the public that their singing was not entertainment but rather had a religious and moral mission.
