Generally, the State-of-Health (SOH) monitoring and Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction and assessment of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries need to use sensors to obtain the degradation test data of the same type of batteries and establish the degradation model for reference. However, when the battery type is unknown, a usable reference model cannot be obtained, so its prediction and evaluation may be relatively inconvenient. In this paper, the State of-Health prediction for lithium-ion batteries based on a novel hybrid scheme is proposed. Firstly, historical charge/discharge time series and capacity series are extracted to analyze and construct Health Indicators, then using Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) to decompose the Health Indicator series into the trend and non-trend terms. Among them, the relatively smooth trend item data series uses the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average model (ARIMA) for prediction; when dealing with the data series of non-trend items which are obviously non-smooth and seemingly random, the residuals predicted by ARIMA and the non-trend items obtained by CEEMDAN decomposition are combined into new non-trend items; then the least square support vector machine (LSSVM) is introduced to build a nonlinear prediction model and make predictions. Finally, combining the prediction results of the trend item data series and the non-trend item data series as a reference for the assessment of the state of health and remaining useful life. The 13 experimental results of 3 batteries verify the effectiveness of the scheme.

Abstract For the production of filters coated with metal oxides an aqueous metal salt solution is injected into a hydrogen/oxygen flame of a particle generator leading to the pyrolysis of the metal salts into nano-scaled metal oxide dust. The particles are introduced into a large sampling chamber (20 m³) via a dust tunnel (20 m). So far, the system was tested for Zn, Cu, Pb, Co, Ni, Mn and In but it should be suitable with all metals obtainable as soluble metal salts. For sample generation an eight-fold sampling system was developed for the GSP sampler. The constancy of the flow rate is assured by critical orifices. Up to fourteen of these systems can be operated to produce 112 samples in parallel. Nevertheless, for the production of a reference material a significantly higher number of samples will be needed. To achieve this aim the environmental conditions of the dust generation have to be stabilized for consecutive runs. The major problem was the temperature rise of the dust channel during the particle generation due to the heat of the flame. An additional heater was installed to work at a constant temperature of 30 °C. Three consecutive filter series were manufactured. The achieved temperature constancy of 30± 0.5 °C makes it possible to combine the successive filter series. The loadings of the combined series were Cobalt: 3.25±0.058 µg/filter, Nickel: 13.78±0.23 µg/filter, Lead: 109.5±3.0, Copper: 9.65 ±0.18 µg/filter and Zinc: 32.66±0.72 µg/filter.

The health monitoring and management have been accepted in modern industrial machinery for an intelligent industrial production. To timely and reliably assess the bearing performance degradation, a novel health monitoring method called feature clustering analysis (FCA) has been proposed in this study. Along with the working time going, this new monitored chart picked by FCA aims to describe the feature clustering distribution transition by a series of reference models. First, the data provided by the reference state (healthy data) and the one from the monitor state (monitor data) are fused together to construct a reference model, which is to explore the active role of healthy status and activate the difference between healthy status and unhealthy status. Manifold learning is later implemented to mine the discriminated features for good class-separable clustering measure. In this manner, heterogeneous information hidden in this reference model will appear once degradation happened. Finally, a clustering quantification factor, named as feature clustering indicator (FCI), is calculated to assess distribution evolution and migration of the monitor status as compared to the consistent healthy status. Furthermore, a single Gaussian model (SGM) based on these FCIs is used to provide a smooth estimate of the healthy condition level. The corresponding negative log likelihood probability (NLLP) and the fault occurrence alarm are developed for an accurate and reliable FCC. And it can well depict a comprehensibility of the real bearing performance degradation process for its whole life. Meanwhile, as compared to other health profiles based on the classical health indicators, the proposed FCC has provided a much more accurate degradation level and rather monotonic profile. The experimental results show the potential in machine health performance degradation assessment.

This study occurred in the area of Coroico at 1700 meters above sea level and in the community of Carmen Pampa, situated at 1850 meters above sea level. Coroico is the capital of Nor Yungas province, department of La Paz. This study hopes to contribute information on reference values for erythrocyte numbers, hemoglobin values, and hematocrits for people between 15 and 60 years old that live between 1700 and 1850 meters above sea level, with the goal of facilitating precise diagnosing of anemia. The study used samples of healthy people, residents with more than two months in Coroico, of middle socioeconomic situation. They were selected by correlating the factors that could influence the values higher or lower, and finally results were obtained for a complete hemogram through an electronic instrument. Hematometric indexes were taken in order to exclude people with any type of anemia. In order to interpret the results, a coefficient correlation was applied with measurements of the average, standard deviation (SD), and 2 SD to define the reference limits for both men and women. Finally, they were compared with the values established for La Paz (3600 meters above sea level) and Santa Cruz (420 meters above sea level). A statistical z-test was used to obtain the differences. The results obtained reject the alternative hypothesis with relation to values in the Santa Cruz population because there is not a significant difference. The alternative hypothesis was accepted with relation to the values from La Paz's population because of a significant difference. Thus the values obtained are similar to the established values for Santa Cruz.

With increasing adoption of metal additive manufacturing (AM) in manufacturing, detecting faults in the printing process has the potential to reduce waste from failed prints and streamline the production process. To increase robustness of anomaly detection, a statistical method of detecting faults from melt pool images is presented. This method uses parametric identification of 1D compression of melt pool images to build a nominal predictive model. Nominal melt pools result in residuals that are Gaussian white noise processes, whereas anomalous melt pools will not follow this distribution. Detection is performed through statistical comparison of incoming data with a nominal reference generated on sparse data. This approach successfully applies statistical time-series methods to detect anomalous melt pools in a metal AM process.

UAVs face some critical challenges in pervasive applications, such as navigation in GPS-denying areas, obstacle avoidance, and tradeoff between payload and flight time. The INSPIRE UTC at Missouri S&T is developing a clamping UAV, a hybrid flying and traversing robot, to make it possible that the UAV flies under a bridge girder, grabs the girder, and moves along the girder for inspection. This heavy UAV is difficult to control underneath the deck when equipped with multiple cameras. In this study, CFD modeling and simulation are conducted to understand the flight behavior and ceiling effect of the UAV under the bridge deck. First, 3D scanning and reverse engineering are used to build CFD models. Second, a series of single propeller tests are conducted to validate the process of CFD modeling and the simulation results. Third, based on the workflow and technique validated through single propeller CFD analysis, the CFD model of an entire UAV is established and analyzed to predict the behavior of the UAV and understand its interaction with upper boundaries as it approaches the bridge ceiling vertically. The CFD simulation results show that the ceiling effect of the designed clamping UAV is insignificant when the UAV approaches the standard bridge deck with enough depth. These results provide a technical reference for the design and control of the clamping UAV for bridge inspection.

The objective of this study is to analyze the modalities of health crisis management in two different sectors during the Covid-19 crisis: the hospital and the nuclear industry. The aim is to:- Characterize the health crisis: similarities and differences compared to other known crises - nuclear, natural crisis (storm, earthquake, flood). - Identify elements of similarity between sectors in the modalities of crisis management and particularities related to the specificities of the socio-technical systems.- Identify the resilience factors and difficulties- Make proposals to enhance the robustness of crisis organizations.Study BackgroundBoth the hospital and the nuclear industry (EDF) have had to organize and adapt to continue their activities from the beginning of the crisis in March 2020.On the hospital side, an emergency plan (White Plan) provides a reconfiguration of the hospital in case of health crisis. On the nuclear side, a Business Continuity Plan exists as well as a pandemic emergency plan (support and mobilization plan).It was at La Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital, a reference hospital for infectious diseases, that the first death of Covid19 was recorded. The crisis unit was activated at that time. The hospital then opened its doors to us for human and organizational factors study of crisis management in April 2020. Concerning the nuclear sector, the health crisis management analysis could only be carried out from October 2020 at the national level and the nuclear power plants.Methodological approachWe applied a systemic approach combining ergonomics, cognitive psychology, and sociology to study socio-technical systems safety.The study focused on crisis management via an analysis of organizational resilience to identify the factors of success and difficulty. Given the temporality of this crisis, the study was carried out in three stages at the hospital.1. April and May 2020: i) a series of remote interviews with various hospital staff were conducted; ii) a passive listening follow-up of about 30 phone meetings of the crisis unit; iii) a documentary analysis of the planned crisis organization.2. November and December 2021: i) a second series of interviews in the hospital emergency unit.3. June and July 2021 in the intensive care unit: i) a third round of interviews; ii) field observations in the hospital; iii) a literature review.In the nuclear field we conducted two retrospective studies at different times, focused on the most critical phase of the crisis (from March to May 2020):1. October - November 2021: an analysis of the health crisis’ management at the national level via a series of interviews completed by an analysis of the crisis reference systems.2. August - September 2021: an analysis of the health crisis management in a Nuclear power plant via interviews and an analysis of site-specific documents. ResultsWe observed similarities in the way the crisis was managed, in terms of management, which proved to be factors of success both at the hospital and at EDF, for example,- A crisis management that integrates the business lines and is top-down, but that listens and takes into account proposals from the field.- Experience of crises and emergency situations, which facilitates crisis management and adaptation.- The habit of protocols facilitating the integration of new constraints.- Very strong collective mobilization of personnelHowever, there are linked difficulties in both sectors, for example, to the virus fear, the anxiety of contaminating one's family and friends, especially at the beginning, and then weariness and fatigue linked to the duration of the crisis.Particularities concerning the work activity in the hospital will be discussed especially in relation to the reconfiguration of the services and to the necessary adaptations and improvisations of patients care protocols and procedures, among others.These studies are source of learning, about crisis management and particularly long-term crises that have a lasting impact on socio-technical systems. Proposals in terms of crisis organization and preparedness for this type of crisis will be presented.

Abstract Operation and maintenance costs are a major driver for levelized cost of energy of wind power plants and can be reduced through optimized operation and maintenance practices accomplishable by various prognostics and health management (PHM) technologies. In recent years, the wind industry has become more open to adopting PHM solutions, especially those focusing on diagnostics. However, prognostics activities are, in general, still at the research and development stage. On the other hand, the industry has a request to estimate a component’s remaining useful life (RUL) when it has faulted, and this is a key output of prognostics. Systematically presenting PHM technologies to the wind industry by highlighting the RUL prediction need potentially helps speed up its acceptance and provides more benefits from PHM to the industry. In this paper, we introduce a PHM for wind framework. It highlights specifics unique to wind turbines and features integration of data and physics domain information and models. The output of the framework focuses on RUL prediction. To demonstrate its application, a data domain method for wind turbine gearbox fault diagnostics is presented. It uses supervisory control and data acquisition system time series data, normalizes gearbox temperature measurements with reference to environmental temperature and turbine power, and leverages big data analytics and machine-learning techniques to make the model scalable and the diagnostics process automatic. Another physics-domain modeling method for RUL prediction of wind turbine gearbox high-speed-stage bearings failed by axial cracks is also discussed. Bearing axial cracking has been shown to be the prevalent wind turbine gearbox failure mode experienced in the field and is different from rolling contact fatigue, which is targeted during the bearing design stage. The method uses probability of failure as a component reliability assessment and RUL prediction metric, which can be expanded to other drivetrain components or failure modes. The presented PHM for wind framework is generic and applicable to both land-based and offshore wind turbines.

This paper presents a novel approach to modelling disc temperature distributions for use in health monitoring applications. The method combines singular value decomposition techniques with a series of low order transfer functions to predict the thermal response over a typical flight cycle. The model inputs reflect typical online measurements; engine speed, altitude, and compressor exit temperature. The model’s complexity has been reduced by projection and truncation of the reference data and its decompositions. The model predicts transient temperatures anywhere within the disc’s profile to an accuracy of 20K, and similarly the thermal gradient can be calculated in any direction within the 2D cross-section. The result is a simple model that is suitable for application in a FADEC system, with the accuracy necessary to safely extend a disc’s life through online calculation of fatigue damage incurred for individual flights. The paper concludes by comparing the model with an earlier method using a grey box physics approach.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Air pollution from internal combustion engines poses a significant apprehension for both global warming and public health on a worldwide scale. The adoption of hybridization and electrification within the vehicular fleet can help to tackle these challenges. This study evaluates a waste heat recovery system for electric power generation, based on the Inverted Brayton Cycle (IBC) coupled with a high-performance gasoline engine. The Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CGI engine platform was modelled in AVL Boost software and validated against the reference published experimental data. The engine model was then modified to incorporate the IBC to study the performance of the proposed hybrid propulsion system. The IBC power output was calculated at a wide range of engine speed and load, and results showed that up to 18 kW of extra power output can be generated by the IBC system. Compared to the IC engine in isolation, by employing the IBC in hybrid series powertrain configuration, electrical power output increased by up to 20% at high speed and load. Moreover, IBC coupling in a parallel hybrid configuration decreased the main engine fuel consumption by 10-20% at high engine load.</div></div>

Increasing population, uncontrolled urban sprawl, and rapid urbanization are the main factors leading to a decrease in green areas, resulting in a series of ecological problems and negatively impacting the quality of life in cities. According to UN data, currently, 55% of the world's population lives in cities. By 2050, this percentage is expected to rise to 68%, meaning that around 6.6 billion people will live in urban areas, leading to an increase in the number of megacities and air pollution, one of the key factors influencing climate change. The sustainability of cities becomes a crucial issue, and urban green spaces, including green corridors, play an important role in this process. Their main goal is to contribute to the creation of sustainable industrial, urban, and transportation networks, addressing complex demands related to ecology, technology, economy, society, and spatial planning. Providing numerous environmental benefits, urban green corridors are crucial for preserving ecology and biodiversity. Additionally, they bring social benefits by improving people's well-being through direct interaction with nature, reducing health problems, and contributing to the overall improvement of the quality of life in urban areas. Drawing on an analysis of reference literature and selected examples of good practice, this paper primarily examines the role and significance of green corridors in strengthening urban resilience to climate change.

In different manufacturing applications the assessment of the health conditions of a machine tool, together with the quality and stability of the process, requires the capability of dealing with response variables described in terms of profile data. In the frame of in-process monitoring of sensor signals this is the case, for instance, of monitoring either series production of large lots of parts or machining processes characterized by cyclic signals, where both the condition of the machine components and the final quality of the worked piece may be correlated with the stability of repeating signal profiles in time. However, as far as real time data acquisition is concerned, and when measurements are performed with high sampling frequency, data are likely to be auto-correlated, and hence it is of fundamental importance to develop adaptive monitoring tools robust with respect to non-steady state conditions. The paper deals with the utilization of profile monitoring approaches for in-process monitoring of manufacturing operations and investigates their applicability to the problem of monitoring auto-correlated signals. In particular Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied in combination with an adaptive approach based on a moving time window for continuously revise the reference model is evaluated and discussed. A real case study is used to test the performances of the method: the task is to detect tool chipping and breakage in end milling operations by means of real-time monitoring of cutting force signals. The evolution of tool wear imposes a trend in observed signals which leads to the need for an adaptive approach to properly isolate the breakage event from the slow pattern change due to wear mechanism.

Abstract This paper presents a gain-scheduled controller composed of a number of positive real controllers that contain internal models of reference command signals. Using the internal model principle as inspiration, and the Passivity Theorem to assure input-output closed-loop stability, the proposed controller is designed to realize tracking while maintaining input-output stability of the closed-loop system. The gain-scheduled nature of the internal models allows for a number of internal models to be simultaneously implemented. In particular, by expressing a periodic reference command as a Fourier series, the first few Fourier modes can be included as internal models in the controllers to be gain-scheduled, which reduces steady-state tracking error. An example involving tracking the outlet temperature of a heat exchanger is presented, where the first nine Fourier modes of the reference signal are used as internal models to reduce tracking error.

Dust aerosols have a wide range of effects on air quality, health, land-management decisions, aircraft operations, and sensor data interpretations. Therefore, the accurate simulation of dust plume initiation and transport is a priority for operational weather centers. Recent advancements have improved the performance of dust prediction models, but substantial capability gaps remain when forecasting the specific location and timing of individual dust events, especially extreme dust outbreaks. Operational weather forecasters and US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) researchers established a series of reference case study events to enhance dust transport model evaluation. These reference case studies support research to improve modeled dust simulations, including efforts to increase simulation accuracy on when and where dust is lofted off the ground, dust aerosols transport, and dust-induced adverse air quality issues create hazardous conditions downstream. Here, we provide detailed assessments of four dust events for Central and East Asia. We describe the dust-event lifecycle from onset to end (or when dust transports beyond the area of interest) and the synoptic and mesoscale environ-mental conditions governing the process. Analyses of hourly reanalysis data, spaceborne lidar and aerosol optical depth retrievals, upper-air soundings, true-color satellite imagery, and dust-enhanced false-color imagery supplement the discussions.

Dust aerosols often create hazardous air quality conditions that affect human health, visibility, agriculture, and communication in various parts of the world. While substantial progress has been made in dust-event simulation and hazard mitigation over the last several decades, accurately forecasting the spatial and temporal variability of dust emissions continues to be a challenge. This report documents an analysis of atmospheric conditions for a series of dust events in North Africa. The researchers highlight four analyzed events that occurred between January 2016 to present in the following locations: (1) the western Sahara Desert; (2) East Algeria and the Iberian Peninsula; (3) Chad-Bodélé Depression; (4) Algeria and Morocco. For each event, the researchers developed an overview of the general synoptic, mesoscale, and local environmental forcing conditions that controlled the event evolution and used a combination of available lidar data, surface weather observations, upper-air soundings, aerosol optical depth, and satellite imagery to characterize the dust conditions. These assessments will support downstream forecast model evaluation and sensitivity testing; however, the researchers also encourage broader use of these assessments as reference case studies for dust transport, air quality modeling, remote sensing, soil erosion, and land management research applications.

Transportation systems can impact both physical and mental health, but the effects of transportation planning decisions on health, beyond safety and air pollution, are often overlooked or undervalued (Litman, 2013). Although not the only factor contributing to health disparities, transportation systems serve as a modifiable variable contributing to health behaviors and outcomes (Nieuwenhuijsen & Khreis, 2019). Following a similar approach to Singleton and Clifton (2017), a review of transportation planning documents from the ten most populous counties within the state of Montana was conducted to analyze the extent that health was considered. A directed and summative approach was used to identify and code health-related guidance statements, performance measures, and reference data in the domains of general health, safety, air quality, physical activity, accessibility, mental health, and equity. Although all transportation plans contained health-related guidance statements and reference data, only those transportation plans from counties containing a metropolitan planning organization (MPO) included health-related performance measures. The inclusion of health-related guidance statements and reference data is evidence that local Montana communities are interested in the impacts of transportation planning on health behaviors and outcomes. Without the federal requirements that MPOs must follow, rural governments are not utilizing health-related performance measures to fully understand performance of the local transportation system related to their community’s public health priorities. The existing performance management structure required of States and MPOs could serve as a guide for further integrating health-related performance measures into small urban and rural transportation planning and can assist local decision makers in analyzing progress toward community priorities (Singleton & Clifton, 2017).

Managing wastes produced during contingency operations in United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) locations has historically relied on local contract disposal or open-air burn pits, which have been shown to be harmful to the health of service members. Posture locations that can find alternative ways to manage waste, specifically through contracts with the host country’s waste services, can better protect the health and safety of the warfighter and the native landscapes. African waste systems are complex, decentralized systems with considerable regional variation. The lack of government-funded waste management services leaves many residents with few options for safe disposal. The differing waste disposal strategies are described to offer guidance for military operations in the focus countries of Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Niger, Senegal, and Uganda. Relevant international agreements regulating the flow of hazardous waste across borders that can impact disposal plans are also noted. This report serves as a reference to develop waste management alternatives in the USAFRICOM area of responsibility (AOR). Official Department of Defense and Army regulations should be consulted when devising an integrated waste management plan.

Following the identification of the gap in the existing systematic reviews and scoping searches concerning patient experience and Deaf people’s experience of using healthcare services, the research question is as follows: “What are Deaf sign language users’ experiences as patients in healthcare services?”. Information sources: The bibliographic databases that will be searched for this review will includes PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Medline. Grey literature sources (e.g., policy, practice, and guideline documents), including contacting the relevant investigators working in the field of Deaf populations, will be searched for this review study. Forward citation sources, from the relevant reference lists, will also be searched to ensure the process is thorough.
