Streszczenie:
In this work, we investigate the holographic dark energy model with a new infrared cutoff (new HDE model), proposed by Granda and Oliveros. Using this new definition for the infrared cutoff, we establish the correspondence between the new HDE model and the standard Chaplygin gas (SCG), generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) and modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) scalar field models in a nonflat universe. The potential and dynamics for these scalar field models, which describe the accelerated expansion of the universe, are reconstructed. According to the evolutionary behavior of the new HDE model, we derive the same form of dynamics and potential for the different SCG, GCG and MCG models. We also calculate the squared sound speed of the new HDE model as well as the SCG, GCG and MCG models, and investigate the new HDE Chaplygin gas models from the viewpoint of linear perturbation theory. In addition, all results in the nonflat universe are discussed in the limiting case of the flat universe, i.e. k = 0.

Hovenia dulcis (H. dulcis) Thunb., which is distributed in Korea, China, and Japan, has been known to show hepatoprotective and free radical scavenging effects and enhance physical activity. Therefore, the objectives of this present study were to determine the anti-fatigue activity of hot-water extract from H. dulcis peduncle, and to find the reason why H. dulcis extract (HDE)-ingested mice had enhanced physical activity against swimming performance. The mice orally administrated with HDE (HDE-mice) dramatically enhanced their swimming time compared to the control mice. HDE significantly decreased serum levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in mice. The levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were dramatically decreased in gastrocnemius muscle from both 100 mg/kg of HDE (LHDE) and 200 mg/kg of HDE (HHDE)-ingested mice compared to the control mice. The liver activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly increased in HHDE-mice with increasing tendency in LHDE-mice. In addition, HHDE-mice significantly decreased the levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol (T-Chol), and triglyceride (TG). These results suggest that HDE had a significant anti-fatigue effect via its anti-stress and antioxidant activities, and thereby enhanced physical activity in swimming performance.

Streszczenie:
In the original holographic dark energy (HDE) model, the dark energy density is proposed to be [Formula: see text], with c a dimensionless constant characterizing the properties of the HDE. In this work, we propose the generalized holographic dark energy (GHDE) model by considering the parameter c as a redshift-dependent function c(z). We derive all the physical quantities of the GHDE model analytically, and fit the c(z) by trying four kinds of parametrizations. The cosmological constraints of the c(z) are obtained from the joint analysis of the present SNLS3+BAO+CMB +H0data. We find that, compared with the original HDE model, the GHDE models can provide a better fit to the data. For example, the GHDE model with JBP-type c(z) can reduce the [Formula: see text] of the HDE model by 2.16. We also find that, unlike the original HDE model with a phantom-like behavior in the future, the GHDE models can present many more different possibilities, i.e. it allows the GHDE in the future to be either quintessence-like, cosmological constant-like, or phantom-like, depending on the forms of c(z).

Workers exposed to aerosolized dust present in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are susceptible to inflammatory lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Extracts of dust collected from hog CAFOs [hog dust extract (HDE)] are potent stimulators of lung inflammatory responses in several model systems. The observation that HDE contains active proteases prompted the present study, which evaluated the role of CAFO dust proteases in lung inflammatory processes and tested whether protease-activated receptors (PARs) are involved in the signaling pathway for these events. We hypothesized that the damaging proinflammatory effect of HDE is due, in part, to the proteolytic activation of PARs, and inhibiting the proteases in HDE or disrupting PAR activation would attenuate HDE-mediated inflammatory indexes in bronchial epithelial cells (BECs), in mouse lung slices in vitro, and in a murine in vivo exposure model. Human BECs and mouse lung slice cultures stimulated with 5% HDE released significantly more of each of the cytokines measured (IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, keratinocyte-derived chemokine/CXC chemokine ligand 1, and macrophage inflammatory protein-2/CXC chemokine ligand 2) than controls, and these effects were markedly diminished by protease inhibition. Inhibition of PARs also blunted the HDE-induced cytokine release from BECs. In addition, protease depletion inhibited HDE-induced BEC intracellular PKCα and PKCε activation. C57BL/6J mice administered 12.5% HDE intranasally, either once or daily for 3 wk, exhibited increased total cellular and neutrophil influx, bronchial alveolar fluid inflammatory cytokines, lung histopathology, and inflammatory scores compared with mice receiving protease-depleted HDE. These data suggest that proteases in dust from CAFOs are important mediators of lung inflammation, and these proteases and their receptors may provide novel targets for therapeutic intervention in CAFO dust-induced airways disease.

Streszczenie:
Agricultural dust exposure results in significant lung inflammation, and individuals working in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are at risk for chronic airway inflammatory diseases. Exposure of bronchial epithelial cells to aqueous extracts of hog CAFO dusts (HDE) leads to inflammatory cytokine production that is driven by protein kinase C (PKC) activation. cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA)-activating agents can inhibit PKC activation in epithelial cells, leading to reduced inflammatory cytokine production following HDE exposure. β2-Adrenergic receptor agonists (β2-agonists) activate PKA, and we hypothesized that β2-agonists would beneficially impact HDE-induced adverse airway inflammatory consequences. Bronchial epithelial cells were cultured with the short-acting β2-agonist salbutamol or the long-acting β2-agonist salmeterol prior to stimulation with HDE. β2-Agonist treatment significantly increased PKA activation and significantly decreased HDE-stimulated IL-6 and IL-8 production in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Salbutamol treatment significantly reduced HDE-induced intracellular adhesion molecule-1 expression and neutrophil adhesion to epithelial cells. Using an established intranasal inhalation exposure model, we found that salbutamol pretreatment reduced airway neutrophil influx and IL-6, TNF-α, CXCL1, and CXCL2 release in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid following a one-time exposure to HDE. Likewise, when mice were pretreated daily with salbutamol prior to HDE exposure for 3 wk, HDE-induced neutrophil influx and inflammatory mediator production were also reduced. The severity of HDE-induced lung pathology in mice repetitively exposed to HDE for 3 wk was also decreased with daily salbutamol pretreatment. Together, these results support the need for future clinical investigations to evaluate the utility of β2-agonist therapies in the treatment of airway inflammation associated with CAFO dust exposure.

Abstract In order to reasonably and rapidly evaluate flood disaster, based on a fuzzy clustering iterative model (FCI) and differential evolution algorithm (DE), an adaptive fuzzy clustering iterative model using a hybrid differential evolution algorithm (AFCI-HDE) is proposed, which has three advantages: firstly, the decision-maker's subjective preference was considered to flexibly modify the objective function; secondly, HDE was introduced to optimize the index weight vector of AFCI; thirdly, the validity of its clustering effect was more credible than that of FCI. Finally, the case study revealed that AFCI-HDE is feasible and effective by comparing the optimal fitness and clustering validity values with other approaches, which could reflect various decision-maker's preferences by simple adaptive adjustments and rapidly obtain reasonable evaluation results, thus providing a new effective approach in flood risk management.

We investigate the interacting holographic dark energy (HDE) with Granda–Oliveros (GO) infrared (IR)-cutoff in the framework of Brans–Dicke (BD) cosmology. We obtain the equation of state (EoS) parameter of HDE, wD, the effective EoS parameter w eff , the deceleration parameter q and the squared of sound speed [Formula: see text] in a flat Friedmann–Robertson–Walker (FRW) universe. We show that at late-time the cosmic coincidence problem can be alleviated. Also we show that for noninteracting case, HDE can give a unified dark matter–dark energy (DM–DE) profile in BD cosmology, except that it cannot solve the coincidence problem in the future. By studying the EoS parameter, we see that the phantom divide may be crossed. Using the latest observational data, we calculate the best values of the parameters for interacting HDE in BD framework. Computing the deceleration parameter implies that the transition from deceleration to the acceleration phase occurred for redshift z ≥ 0.5. Finally, we investigate the sound stability of the model, and find that HDE with Granda–Oliveros (GO)-cutoff in the framework of BD cosmology can lead to a stable DE-dominated universe favored by observations, provided we take β = 0.44 and b2 < 0.35. This is in contrast to HDE model in Einstein gravity which does not lead to a stable DE-dominated universe.

Streszczenie:
The energy density of the holographic dark energy (HDE) is based on the area law of entropy, and thus any modification of the area law leads to a modified holographic energy density. Inspired by the entropy expression associated with the apparent horizon of a Friedmann–Robertson–Walker (FRW) universe in DGP braneworld, we propose a new model for the HDE in the framework of DGP brane cosmology. We investigate the cosmological consequences of this new model and calculate the equation of state (EoS) parameter by choosing the Hubble radius, [Formula: see text], as the system’s IR cutoff. Our study show that, due to the effects of the extra dimension (bulk), the identification of IR cutoff with Hubble radius, can reproduce the present acceleration of the universe expansion. This is in contrast to the ordinary HDE in standard cosmology which leads to the zero EoS parameter in the case of choosing the Hubble radius as system’s IR cutoff in the absence of interaction between dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE).

Considering the holographic dark energy (HDE) with two different infrared (IR) cutoffs, we study the evolution of a cyclic universe, which avoids the Big-Rip singularity. Our results show that, even in the absence of a mutual interaction between the cosmos sectors, the HDE model with the Hubble radius as IR cutoff can mimic a cosmological constant in the framework of a cyclic cosmology. In addition, we find that both the interacting and non-interacting universes may enter into a cycle of sequential contraction and expansion, if the Granda–Oliveros cutoff is chosen as the IR cutoff in the energy density of the HDE. We also investigate the instability of the model against perturbations and find the ranges of the parameters in which the model is stable.

Motivated by the work of Saridakis (Phys. Rev. D102, 123525 (2020)), the present study reports the cosmological consequences of Barrow holographic dark energy (HDE) and its thermodynamics. The literature demonstrates that dark energy (DE) may result from electroweak symmetry breaking that triggers a phase transition from early inflation to late-time acceleration. In the present study, we incorporated viscosity in the Barrow HDE. A reconstruction scheme is presented for the parameters associated with Barrow holographic dark energy under the purview of viscous cosmology. The equation of state (EoS) parameter is reconstructed in this scenario and quintessence behaviour is observed. Considering Barrow HDE as a specific case of Nojiri–Odintsov (NO) HDE, we have observed quintom behaviour of the EoS parameter and for some values of n the EoS has been observed to be very close to −1 for the current universe. The generalised second law of thermodynamics has come out to be valid in all the scenarios under consideration. Physical viability of considering Barrow HDE as a specific case of NO HDE is demonstrated in this study. Finally, it has been observed that the model under consideration is very close to ΛCDM and cannot go beyond it.

A lipoperoxidação gera diversas espécies carbonílicas altamente reativas dentre as quais se destacam acroleína (ACR), malondialdeído (MDA), 4-hidroxi-2-hexenal (HHE) e 4-hidroxi-2-nonenal (HNE).
Lipid peroxidation generates reactive carbonyl species, including 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), acrolein (ACR), 4-hydroxy-2-hexenal (HHE) and malondialdehyde (MDA). One major pathway of aldehyde detoxification in vivo is through conjugation with glutathione catalyzed by glutathione-S-transferases or, alternatively, by conjugation with endogenous histidine containing dipeptides, such as carnosine (CAR). The reaction of CAR with ACR was investigated in an effort to assess its possible biological role. One stable adduct was isolated by reverse-phase HPLC and characterized on the basis of extensive spectroscopic measurements. The proposed reaction route for product formation involves the reaction of the CAR amino group with ACR via a Schiff base formation followed by dehydration and cyclization through Michael addition in the imidazole ring forming an instable compound with m/z = 265. The subsequent reaction with another molecule of ACR followed by cyclization gives rise to the final product with m/z = 303.A highly sensitive method involving HPLC-MS analysis was developed for the simultaneous accurate quantification of CAR- ACR, CAR-HHE and CAR-HNE adducts in human urinary samples from non-smoking adults. This methodology permits quantification of 10 pmol CAR-HHE and 1 pmol of CAR-ACR and CAR-HNE. Adduct levels in urine were 3.6 ± 1.4, 2.3 ± 1.5, 1.3 ± 0.5 nmol/mg of creatinine, respectively to CAR-ACR, CAR-HHE and CAR-HNE. In SODG93A transgenic rats model to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the food supplementation of the animals with 35 ± 5 mg carnosine/animal/week improve de body weight and the life span of the ALS treated group. Analysis of the synthesized adducts in muscle sample showed suggest than aldehyde metabolization is compromised in this animals and that may be carnosine work like a scavenger for these compounds. Our results indicate that carnosine adduction can be an important detoxification route of α,β -unsaturated aldehydes. Moreover, carnosine adducts quantification may be useful as redox stress indicator in vivo.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the area of model complexity and see what precautions could be made to avoid the generation of complex models. These findings included five principles stated by M. Pidd which were implemented in the development of a new Simulink real world model of a heavy duty vehicle. The developed model was integrated into a hardware-in-the-loop configuration and parameterized and validated by comparing the new model to the previous model in several advanced emergency brake test cases. Additional testing was done to prove the overall robustness and validity of the new model. With an average relative error of 2% compared to measurement data of the previous model and the additional testing considered passed, the new model was deemed valid and representative of a heavy duty vehicle. The study recommends that further simplifications are done in the hardware integration framework, which have not been targeted in this thesis, to reduce the complexity of the overall model further. All and all the new model met the deliveries and due to its less complex structure and maintained validity it was implemented at the REVT department at Scania CV AB.

Many contemporary servers, personal and laptop computers, and even cell phones are powered by high-performance superscalar processors. In the past, conventional microarchitecture and technology scaling has afforded leaps in their performance and functionality. Today, conventional microarchitecture and technology scaling are both yielding lower returns with increasing costs. Therefore, any microarchitecture level decision to increase performance needs to be critically analyzed from a technology standpoint. To address this critical need, we have developed a register transfer level (RTL) model of a superscalar microarchitecture with similar complexity of a current generation processor. The RTL model is written in Verilog and is fully synthesizable. The model can be implemented in different technology nodes using a well established ASIC design flow to provide high fidelity estimation of propagation delay, power consumption, area, and other technology related costs. The RTL model is supplemented with a register file compiler to estimate the costs of multi-ported memory structures which are extensively used in a superscalar microarchitecture. The RTL model is also tightly integrated with a C++ functional simulator to assist and accelerate verification.

Streszczenie:
A quick and reliable active flying height calibration is critical in today’s hard disc drive short product development and high volume production cycles. In addition to the servo signals, passive HDI acoustic and proximity monitoring techniques are tracking equilibrium of the head gimble assembly and air bearing modes. Passive acoustic HDI monitoring had been proven to be capable in active head protrusion detection applications [1] where derived passive and active Air Bearing flying profiles help to set active flying clearance. With enhanced sensitivity, passive acoustic techniques such as AE can detect embedded particles [2]. The drawback of this technique is that noisy HDD environment causes loss of detectability of the useful AE signal [3]. Special attention has to be paid for extracting desirable HDI information. On the other hand, recording head based proximity probes are immune to torsional HDI modes and operate on pitch mode induced modulation. Advanced HDD today uses a combination of recording head based proximity sensors that are designed to sense HDI modulation at close proximity to the disc. It has to be pointed out that interpretation of proximity probe contact signatures always has been challenging.

Streszczenie:
With the introduction of netbook computers two years ago, the demand for hard disk drives (HDD) for mobile applications has greatly increased. High shock resistance is an important requirement for the reliable performance of HDDs in such applications. In this paper we conduct a numerical investigation to understand the failure mechanism of the head disk interface (HDI) during an operational shock. Simulation results suggest that the excitation frequency spectrum has a strong influence on HDI failure. We also investigate the effect of the parking or load unload (LUL) ramp on shock resistance using a new spinning disk model. The results suggest that asymmetric excitations induced by ramp-disk collision causes failure of the HDI at lower shock magnitudes. This study can be helpful in improving the design of HDD components and air bearing sliders (ABS) for better shock performance.

Streszczenie:
Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the demand of hard disk drives (HDD) used in portable devices. In such applications HDDs are often subjected to mechanical shocks. Hence it is important to study the stability of mobile drives during operational shocks (op-shock) in order to improve their shock performance. Former numerical investigations [1–3] used either detailed structure models and simplified air bearing models or vice versa to understand the HDI response during an opshock event. In 2012, Rai and Bogy [4] proposed a method in which both the HDD components and the air bearing were modeled in detail and were coupled with each other. However, in this model the head actuator assembly (HAA) was assumed to be amounted on a fixed support and hence the flexibility of the base plate and those effects on the HAA were neglected. In this study, we model the HAA as mounted on the base plate to investigate the effects of HDD components on the shock performance of mobile drives.

Streszczenie:
Airflow characteristics and particle trajectories inside a small form factor hard disk drive (HDD) enclosure is modeled by creating a complex unstructured mesh around the various geometrical artifacts in the HDD enclosure using a commercial flow-solver which solves the incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations. From this model insight on the airflow characteristics in the vicinity of the slider could be obtained. The effect of the read/write head on the global flow field is also addressed for typical disk operation conditions. The computed airflow patterns are then used to predict particle trajectories in the vicinity of head/disk interface (HDI), the knowledge of which has relevance for tribological aspects connected with the HDI region. The effects of gravity and thermal gradients on the airflow characteristics within the HDD enclosure are also considered. Knowledge of particle trajectories and interaction provide useful guidelines for HDD design and filter locations. Depending on the types of particles, these are likely to be subjected to gravitational and thermophoretic forces, or inter particle interactions. Particles of different materials and sizes are used to evaluate the effects of these forces, which influence the particle trajectories.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Hydrodynamic bearing (HDB) spindles currently being developed for information storage systems such as hard disk drives (HDDs) typically consist of two journal bearings with herringbone grooves. In this work, translational and conical motions of lightly loaded herringbone groove journal bearings are analyzed. For translational motion, the full eigenvalue solution for a typical HDB in a small form factor HDD may be simplified using scaling analysis. Perturbation equations for the stiffness and damping coefficients are derived from the Reynolds equation and solved for the lightly loaded herringbone groove bearing. The resulting analysis shows that the translational motion consists of a forward whirl mode and a backward whirl mode. The whirl frequencies of the two modes have the same magnitude but opposite sign. In addition, a simplified analysis shows that for a no-load herringbone groove journal bearing the in-line stiffness is not trivial while the cross coupling damping vanishes. On the other hand, for the conical mode eigenvalues, the same scaling analysis only applies when the bearing span is large. For typical HDB in HDDs, the conical whirl frequencies depend strongly on bearing and rotor geometries. Numerical calculations were carried out to demonstrate the validity and limitation of the theoretical analysis.

New magnetic storage technology enhancements are being introduced into the HDD products to facilitate lower head media spacing and reliability. Recently, advanced components such as thermal protrusion devices, Head Disc Interface (HDI) proximity sensors, complex self-compensating AAB designs have been integrated into the recording heads. Component development and product integration teams evaluate performance of these critical head disc interfaces for tribological robustness. New HDI components could potentially bring new HDI wear mechanisms that occur under specific thermo-mechanical conditions. Characterization of recording head DLC overcoat nanoscale wear performance has always been a challenge. Historically, nano-wear tests evolved in conjunction with advances in Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) techniques [1] and wear resistive tools [2] like diamond tip cantilevers. Here, by controlling SPM, contact force specified wear patterns can be obtained in contact mode or dynamic mode. Decisions on DLC wear resistance can be made qualitatively by evaluating wear mark topographies.

Streszczenie:
Heme-mediated oxidation in red meat is described as one of the potential routes to meat-induced colorectal cancer, which is linked to the ability of this reaction to continue also during gastrointestinal (GI) digestion while generating reactive aldehydes such as e.g. malondialdehyde (MDA), 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE) and 4-hydroxy-trans-2-hexenal (HHE). Very little is however known about the specific forms of heme being present at different stages of the GI-tract, and how mammal heme-proteins compare to those of for example fish with respect to their lipid pro-oxidative activity under GI-conditions. In the present study, the degradation of trout and bovine Hb and their pro-oxidant activities towards washed cod muscle mince were studied using in vitro GI digestion models. When the two Hb´s were subjected only to the pH-cycle of the GI-digestion model (pH 7→6→3→7) at 37°C, metHb formation increased following the initial gastric acidification to pH 6, especially for trout Hb. Subsequent acidification to pH 3 promoted Hb unfolding and partial or complete loss of the heme group. When digesting the Hb´s in the full digestion model, i.e. with enzymes and bile present, high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HP-SEC) and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of digests showed more extensive Hb-degradation in the gastric phase compared to in the duodenal phase. When washed cod muscle was digested without/with Hb, a strong pro-oxidative effect was seen from the Hb´s, resulting in high MDA, HHE, HNE formation which peaked at the end of the gastric phase. Slightly higher oxidation was seen with trout Hb, especially with respect to HHE. Results thus indicate that partially degraded Hb, and/or free hemin -both from mammal and fish sources- were highly pro-oxidative towards PUFA-rich lipids under GI-conditions, especially in the gastric phase.

Streszczenie:
Tecnatom has been performing Human Factors Engineering Verification and Validation (HFE V&V) from the mid-eighties. This activity started as one of the various activities of the post TMI requirements followed also in Spain: performing detailed Control Room Design Reviews (DCRDRs). All the existing Spanish Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) were reviewed to identify Human Engineering Discrepancies (HEDs). DCRDRs were completed by the mid-nineties, and the following V&V activities have been related to new designs and plant modifications as part of the activities described in the Human Factors Program Review Model (HFE PRM), included in NUREG-0711 since 1994. The NRC recommends following the HFE PRM or an acceptable alternative method in the case of the HFE activities and the Spanish Regulatory Body (CSN) recommend the same approach for new designs, design modifications and even for conventional plants. The activities embedded in a HFE V&V process are Task Support Verification (TSV), HFE Design Verification (HFE DV) using NUREG-0700 HFE Guidelines, and Integrated System Validation (ISV), with the execution of performance based tests, mainly in simulator facilities. This paper describes some of the experience of Tecnatom during the past years regarding the execution of these V&V activities previously mentioned, and in relation to the applicability and methodological aspects of each of these activities. Methodological aspects regarding TSV are related to its execution when there is a no Task Analysis to use. Methodological aspects regarding the HFE DV are related to the type of HSI to verify (small or large), its development status (paper design or implemented), the selection and translation of applicable HFE guidelines, and the HED preparation. Methodological aspects regarding the ISV are related to the necessary crews, training, number of scenarios, issues to test, data collection and performance measures. The experience is mainly related to Tecnatom’s work is Spanish NPP like Jose´ Cabrera, Almaraz and Vandello´s and in the case of foreign plants Beznau and an advanced NPP in Taiwan amongst others.

he bedded salt formations located throughout the United States are layered and interspersed with non-salt materials such as anhydrite, shale, dolomite and limestone. The salt layers often contain significant impurities. GRI and DOE have initialized this research proposal in order to increase the gas storage capabilities by providing operators with improved geotechnical design and operating guidelines for thin bedded salt caverns. Terralog has summarized the geologic conditions, pressure conditions and critical design factors that may lead to: Fracture in heterogeneous materials; Differential deformation and bedding plane slip; Propagation of damage around single and multiple cavern; Improved design recommendations for single and multiple cavern configurations in various bedded salt environments. The existing caverns within both the Permian Basin Complex and the Michigan and Appalachian Basins are normally found between 300 m to 1,000 m (1,000 ft to 3,300 ft) depth depending on local geology and salt dissolution depth. Currently, active cavern operations are found in the Midland and Anadarko Basins within the Permian Basin Complex and in the Appalachian and Michigan Basins. The Palo Duro and Delaware Basins within the Permian Basin Complex also offer salt cavern development potential. Terralog developed a number of numerical models for caverns located in thin bedded salt. A modified creep viscoplastic model has been developed and implemented in Flac3D to simulate the response of salt at the Permian, Michigan and Appalachian Basins. The formulation of the viscoplastic salt model, which is based on an empirical creep law developed for Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Program, is combined with the Drucker-Prager model to include the formation of damage and failure. The Permian salt lab test data provided by Pfeifle et al. 1983, are used to validate the assumptions made in the material model development. For the actual cavern simulations two baseline models are developed for single and multiple caverns, respectively. Different parameters that affect damage propagation and deformation of salt cavern, such as cavern pressure, operating conditions, cavern height/diameter ratio, overburden stiffness and roof thickness are analyzed and the respective results summarized. For multiple horizontal caverns numerical models are developed to determine the cavern interaction and the minimum safe center to center distance. A step by step methodology for operators to assess critical cavern design parameters for thin bedded salt formations is also presented.

The article deals with the problem of using modeling in social statistics courses. It allows the student-researcher to build one-dimensional and multidimensional models of the phenomena and processes that are being studied. Social Statistics course programs from foreign universities (University of Arkansas; Athabasca University; HSE University, Russia; McMaster University, Canada) are analyzed. The article provides an example using the education data set – Guardian UK universities ranking in Social Statistics course. Examples of research questions are given, data analysis for these questions is performed (correlation, hypothesis testing, discriminant analysis). During the research the discriminant model with group variable – modified Guardian score – and 9 predictors: course satisfaction, teaching quality, feedback, staff-student ratio, money spent on each student and other) was built. Lower student’s satisfaction with feedback was found to be significantly different from the satisfaction with teaching. The article notes the modeling and statistical analysis should be accompanied by a meaningful interpretation of the results. In this example, we discussed the essence of university ratings, the purpose of Guardian rating, the operationalization and measurement of such concepts as satisfaction with teaching, feedback; ways to use statistics in education, data sources etc. with students. Ways of using this education data in group and individual work of students are suggested.
