Hatha Yoga, also known as "Discipline of Force" in Sanskrit, is a branch of yoga that emphasizes physical control as a means of achieving spiritual perfection in which the mind is shut off from the world. Hatha yoga was once an austere discipline that has been practiced for a very long time. The tradition began on the boundaries of India and Nepal, with roots that go back to the Sanskrit epics (Hinduism) and the Pali canon (Buddhism). Ancient Hatha yogis practiced the Hatha yoga disciplines for the purpose of self-exploration while living as renunciates. Hindu ideas like karma and rebirth were crucial to their way of thinking. Hatha yoga is a branch of yoga primarily concerned with mastery of the body, and it is arguably the tradition most familiar to Western culture. Hatha yoga has only recently come to be known as a physical practice that normally entails a series of asanas (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques). In this regard, compared to techniques like Ashtanga or Vinyasa, Hatha yoga is typically done more methodically and with more stable posture holds. But Hatha yoga is much more than just the physical exercise that has recently gained popularity.

ABSTRACT The elderly experience changes in muscle structure, namely a decrease in the number and muscle atrophy. The impact of these changes can reduce muscle strength and mobility. Muscular strength is a major component of walking, walking and balance. Weakness of extremity muscles, especially the lower part can cause disturbances in body balance. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hatha yoga on the balance of the elderly body. Hatha yoga training emphasizes the mind, physical movement, and breathing. The movements produced in hatha yoga are coordinated from the muscles of the body to obtain good body stability and flexibility, which can help improve balance. This type of research is pre-experimental with one group pretest posttest design. Samples were taken using purposive sampling consisting of 11 elderly people aged 60-74 years. Pre and post intervention elderly body balance data were collected using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) checklist. Before the hatha yoga intervention was given, most of the respondents had moderate body balance, namely 7 respondents (63.6%). After being given a hatha yoga intervention for 4 weeks which was carried out 3 times a week, there was a change in the level of body balance in the elderly. Most of the respondents have a good level of body balance as many as 6 respondents (54.5%). Based on statistical tests using Wilcoxon, a p-value of 0.025 was obtained, meaning that there was an effect of hatha yoga on the balance of the elderly body. Summary Study aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of hatha yoga practices on the shaping of the anteroposterior (AP) spinal curvatures in students of the University of the Third Age, who participated in hatha yoga classes. Material and methods: 20 women and 5 men took part in the study. Hatha yoga classes were held once a week for 90 minutes over a period of 8 months along with additional exercises including basic positions of hatha yoga in home conditions 1-2 times a week for about 30 minutes. The inclination of the AP curvatures of the spine was measured twice, before and after the end of the classes. A Rippstein plurimeter was used for the measurements. R esults: Measurements of the angle of thoracic kyphosis before starting the series of hatha yoga classes and after finishing them showed a decrease in thoracic curvature in female (p < 0.01). In case of the angle of lumbar lordosis, a reduction in this curvature as a result of yoga techniques has been observed in women (p < 0.01) too. Amounts of AP curvatures of the spine, measured after completing the series of hatha yoga classes, fluctuated around correct values better than before taking them up. Conclusion: This study has shown that yoga training leads to an improvement in the habitual body posture in case of aggravating (excessive) AP curvatures of the spine.

Abstract Physical activity is interrelated with health, physical fitness, and quality of life. The role physical activity plays in the context of lifestyle disease prevention is indisputable. Physical exercises of yoga (hatha yoga) are a type of recreational physical activity classified as a form of body and mind fitness. Hatha yoga training consists of slow or fast and smooth entering into, holding, and exiting yoga postures called “asanas”. Besides asanas, a yoga class may also include breathing exercises (pranayama) and relaxation exercises. The aim of this paper is to analyse the benefits of regular hatha yoga training in the light of scientific studies in regard to primary and secondary prevention of lifestyle diseases (cardiovascular diseases, respiratory system diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system in particular). The results of the analysis revealed that regular hatha yoga training including pranayama (breathing exercises) produced a reduction in blood pressure and heart rate, improved respiratory functions, decreased blood glucose levels and body mass, as well as improving functional fitness and self-perceived quality of life. Therefore, hatha yoga as a form of physical activity can be a useful intervention for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, respiratory system diseases, metabolic diseases, and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, including back pain.

This study analyzed similar structure between the traditional dance of Baratanatiyam which has deep Indian history and Hatha yoga which is centered on physical training, based on Shiva mythology. For conducting the research, we collected various papers and journals related to Shiva mythology, Indian dance, Hatha yoga, and other scientific articles on Indian traditional dance to enhance understanding of Indian traditional culture. Through this, the background composition and characteristics of Indian dance and Hatha yoga derived by Shiva mythology were identified and the gestures of the shiva god were used to symbolize the meanings contained in the gestures. First, it has a symbolic similarity that coincides with the ultimate goal of reaching the state of liberation. Second, the characteristics of Nritta, Nritya, and Natya of Baritanatiyam have structural similarities that work similarly to the structure of Hatha Yoga. Third, symmetrical and repetitive motions and elaborate and standardized motions act in the same pattern. As a result, this study focuses on the understanding of contact between Indian dance and Hatha yoga, which have been separated into different areas and develops the new language of yoga that has become popular in Korea and embraces it within dance studies to promote diversity in dance studies.

Breast cancer survivors often experience changes in their perception of their bodies following surgical treatment. These changes in body image may increase self-consciousness and perceptions of physical activity constraints and reduce participation in physical activity. While the number of studies examining different types of yoga targeting women with breast cancer has increased, studies thus far have not studied the influence that Hatha yoga has on body image and physical activity constraints. The objective of this study was to explore the changes that occur in breast cancer survivors in terms of body image, perceived constraints, and physical fitness following an 8-week Hatha yoga intervention. This study used a nonrandomized two-group pilot study, comparing an 8-week Hatha yoga intervention with a light exercise group, both designed for women who were at least nine months post-treatment for breast cancer. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected in the areas of body image, physical activity constraints, and physical fitness. Findings indicated that quantitatively, yoga participants experienced reductions in physical activity constraints and improvements in lower- and upper-body strength and flexibility, while control participants experienced improvements in abdominal strength and lower-body strength. Qualitative findings support changes in body image, physical activity constraints, and physical fitness for the participants in the yoga group. In conclusion,Hatha yoga may reduce constraints to physical activity and improve fitness in breast cancer survivors. More research is needed to explore the relationship between Hatha yoga and improvements in body image.

This paper undertakes the problem of perceiving and feeling the body in the process of acquiring the identity of a hatha-yoga practitioner. The process of becoming a “yogi” is connected with the practice of the work on the body and defining these practices, specific perception of the body, and feeling the body. Becoming a hatha-yoga practitioner is a process. I describe phases of this process in the paper: 1) The initial phase—constructing motives and first steps; 2) The phase of a fuller recognition of psychophysical effects and ascribing to them appropriate meanings; 3) The phase of a fuller recognition of spiritual aspects of hatha-yoga (quasi-religion). The relations between the mind and the body get complicated at the moment of meaningful engagement in yoga practice and defining body practice as mental practice, as well as spiritual. The work on the body can change the “Western” perspective of defining the body as a material element of human existence (the Cartesian vision) to a vision of treating the body as a spiritualized substance (the vision of Eastern philosophy). Such a change is not always possible if we hold on to the guidelines of other religions as own (e.g., the Catholic religion). Changes in the body and psyche have to be in such a situation defined differently, and also there have to be certain language descriptions of these changes (often acquiring guidelines of set languages formulas) in order to combine the statements of conventional religion with a new spiritual experience.

Context: Although Hatha-Yoga has been scientifically proven to promote health and prevent disease, it is neither recognize and or valued by many managed care stakeholders. Objective: This exploratory study was undertaken to answer the research question: What patterns emerge to explain why Hatha-Yoga is not valued by many managed care stakeholders, and what approaches could be taken to increase Yoga's perceived value? Design: In search of obstacles to Yoga's acceptance, an extensive literature review was conducted and a set of interview questions was developed and then posed to stakeholders of managed care. The data from the literature and interview responses were analyzed and collated. Although this qualitative research touches on many types of complementary and alternative medicine, it highlights Hatha-Yoga and its reimburse-ability in a managed care environment. Setting: United States. Participants: Thirty-two representatives were nonrandomly selected from various stakeholder groups in nine different states. Results: Fifty-one reasons, attributable to all categories of stakeholders, surfaced to explain why Hatha-Yoga is not readily valued by many health care stakeholders. This study identifies numerous approaches that could be taken to increase appreciation and application of Yoga's proven health benefits. Conclusion: To improve the acceptability and reimburse-ability of Hatha-Yoga, the following must happen:Yoga professionals resolve issues surrounding certification and licensing; physicians recognize Yoga's proven benefits and place more emphasis on prevention; controlled randomized trials and measurable outcomes are instituted; medical schools provide education about Yoga; and insurance companies and health maintenance organizations include coverage for the use of Yoga.

Objectives: To examine positive affect (PA) responses to a single hatha yoga session compared to a lecture control class and to investigate a potential association between selfreported morningness-eveningness and yoga - related PA change. Method: Participants (Mean age = 28.50 years) in the yoga group (n = 45) and control group (n = 25) completed the revised Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (rMEQ) before yoga and lecture (pre) and the Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS) as a measure of PA before and after yoga and lecture (post). Results: Pre-to-post PA change was greater in the yoga group compared to the control (p < 0.001). Analysis of the yoga group VAMS scores revealed a significant rMEQ type (morning, neither, evening) by time (pre to post) interaction (p = 0.03), with greater PA change in evening types compared to morning types (p = 0.01). Conclusions: The results show that a single hatha yoga session improves self-reported PA more than a lecture control and suggest a relationship between self-reported morningness-eveningness and PA responses to hatha yoga. The findings may help yoga practitioners, instructors, and researchers better understand the psychological benefits of yoga. Researchers should consider conducting long-term studies on the association between self-reported morningness- eveningness and affective responses to yoga practice.

Hatha Yoga, characterized by body posture formation techniques and controlled breathing exercises, seeks to maintain the body's natural equilibrium. Conversely, hypertension, marked by elevated blood pressure within the vascular system, is a persistent medical condition. Its prevalence increases with age, particularly in low and middle-income nations. This study explores the effect of Hatha Yoga exercises on blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients at the Biaro Public Health Center in 2023. Employing a Quasi-Experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest Design, this research engaged a study population comprising individuals aged 45-59 years. Purposive sampling identified a sample of 12 participants. Over a 2-week period, data was collected utilizing an aneroid sphygmomanometer and observation sheets. Data analysis encompassed univariate and bivariate analyses, employing the paired t-test. The results revealed that the mean blood pressure in hypertensive patients prior to participating in Hatha Yoga was 155.50, whereas following the intervention, it reduced to 150.08. These outcomes indicated a substantial impact, as evidenced by a p-value of 0.030, surpassing the significance level α (0.05). In conclusion, Hatha Yoga exercises significantly influenced blood pressure in elderly hypertensive patients at the Biaro Public Health Center in 2023. Consequently, it is recommended that hypertensive elderly individuals incorporate regular and disciplined Hatha Yoga exercises into their routine to effectively manage their blood pressure.

Abstract Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity that primarily affects adolescents during the key period of growth and development. While traditional treatment methods often involve bracing or surgery, Hatha yoga, a millennia-old practice rooted in Indian tradition, has emerged as a complementary option for AIS cases. This paper explores the potential benefits of Hatha yoga for adolescents with AIS. It also discusses the limitations of existing research, such as the lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs), varying yoga protocols, and challenges in blinding participants and researchers. To address these limitations, I propose future research directions, including conducting large-scale RCTs, long-term follow-up studies, standardized yoga protocols, and assessing safety concerns. I also highlight the need for tailored interventions and comparative effectiveness studies to better understand the potential of Hatha yoga in the holistic treatment of AIS in adolescents.

Aim: This study investigated the impact of Hatha yoga exercise on lipid parameters in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis. Materials and Methods: This prospective randomized study consisted of 33 ESRD patients in the Hatha yoga exercise group that was matched with 35 ESRD patients in the control group. Serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol were determined at baseline (0 month) and after 4 months. Results: Comparing values after 4 months versus baseline in the prehemodialysis Hatha yoga exercise group, there was found a significant decrease in total cholesterol from 5.126 ± 0.092 mmol/l to 4.891 ± 0.072 mmol/l (-4.58%; P = 0.0001), triglycerides from 2.699 ± 0.078 mmol/l to 2.530 ± 0.063 mmol/l (-6.26%; P = 0.0001), LDL-cholesterol from 2.729 ± 0.083 mmol/l to 2.420 ± 0.066 mmol/l (-11.32%; P = 0.0001), and total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio from 5.593 ± 0.119 mmol/l to 4.907 ± 0.116 mmol/l (-12.26%; P = 0.047). For patients in the Hatha yoga exercise group, 51.5% had normal total cholesterol at 0 month while 70.0% had normal total cholesterol (P <0.05)after 4 four months and 54.5% of patients had normal LDL-cholesterol at 0 month while 84.9% had normal LDL-cholesterol after 4 months (P <0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that Hatha yoga exercise has preventive and beneficial effects and may be a safe therapeutic modality in ESRD patients.

Flexibility training responses to distinct stretching techniques are not well defined, especially in the elderly. This study compared the flexibility of elderly individuals before and after having practiced hatha yoga and calisthenics for 1 year (52 weeks), at least 3 times/week. Sixty-six subjects (12 men) measured and assigned to 3 groups: control (n = 24, age = 67.7±6.9 years), hatha yoga (n = 22, age = 61.2±4.8 years), and calisthenics (n = 20, age = 69.0±5.8 years). The maximal range of passive motion of 13 movements in 7 joints was assessed by the Flexitest, comparing the range obtained with standard charts representing each arc of movement on a discontinuous and non-dimensional scale from 0 to 4. Results of individual movements were summed to define 4 indexes (ankle+knee, hip+trunk, wrist+elbow, and shoulder) and total flexibility (Flexindex). Results showed significant increases of total flexibility in the hatha yoga group (by 22.5 points) and the calisthenics group (by 5.8 points) (p < 0.01 for each) and a decrease in the control group (by 2.1 points) (p < 0.01) after one year of intervention. Between-group comparison showed that increases in the hatha yoga group were greater than in the calisthenics group for most flexibility indexes, particularly the overall flexibility (p <0.05). In conclusion, the practice of hatha yoga (i.e., slow/passive movements) was more effective in improving flexibility compared to calisthenics (i.e., fast/dynamic movements), but calisthenics was able to prevent flexibility losses observed in sedentary elderly subjects.
