Streszczenie:
Purpose The following paper is a “Q&A interview” conducted by Joanne Pransky of Industrial Robot Journal as a method to impart the combined technological, business and personal experience of a prominent, robotic industry PhD-turned successful innovator and entrepreneur regarding the commercialization and challenges of bringing his technological inventions to market. This paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Considered one of the top biomechatronics researchers in the world, Dr Hugh Herr heads the MIT Biomechatronics Research Group and Center for Extreme Bionics. His research programs seek to advance technologies that promise to accelerate the merging of body and machine, including device architectures that resemble the body’s musculoskeletal design, actuator technologies that behave like muscle and control methodologies that exploit principles of biological movement. Herr’s methods encompass a diverse set of scientific and technological disciplines that are advancing an emerging field of engineering science that applies principles of biomechanics and neural control to guide the designs of human rehabilitation and augmentative devices. Findings As a teenager, Herr was a highly competitive mountain climber until he had to have both legs amputated below the knees after suffering severe frostbite during a 1982 mountain expedition at the age of 17. As a result of this experience, he directed his efforts and talent to try to improve the mobility of people with disabilities. He graduated in physics in 1990 from the Millersville University (Pennsylvania). He subsequently earned a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1993 and a PhD in Biophysics at Harvard University in 1998. He then was a postdoctoral fellow in medical devices at MIT. He was Assistant Professor at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, Harvard Medical School. Since 2000, he has been heading the MIT Biomechatronics Group within the Media Lab and has been Co-directing the Lab’s Center for Extreme Bionics since 2014. To bring his inventions to market, Herr founded a spin-off company out of MIT under the name iWalk in 2007, which was relaunched as BionX Medical Technologies Inc. in 2015, and acquired by Ottobock in 2017. Originality/value Herr is a world leader and inventor in the field of bionics and biomechanics whose research accomplishments have already made a significant impact on physically challenged people. Herr has produced several groundbreaking products, starting with a computer-controlled artificial knee in 2003, called the Rheo Knee™ System and commercialized by Össur Inc. He also designed his own bionic lower legs, the world’s first powered ankle-foot prosthesis to emulate the action of a biological leg and, for the first time, provides amputees with a natural gait. The Empower ankle system is now marketed by Ottobock. He is presently working on NeuroEmbodied Design methodology to restore proprioception to amputees. Herr has received major accolades including the Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Leadership Award (2005), the Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment (2007) and R&D Magazine’s 14th Innovator of the Year Award (2014) and a No Barriers Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 No Barriers Summit. His innovations were listed twice among TIME magazine’s Top Ten Inventions (2004; 2007) and which called him “Leader of the Bionic Age” in 2011. His life story has been told in the book Second Ascent: The Story of Hugh Herr (1991) and in the film Ascent: The Story of Hugh Herr, made in 2002 by National Geographic. He is the author and co-author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and patents.

Streszczenie:
Formal course instruction in mineralogy and geology began in Harvard College in 1788 with Benjamin Waterhouse. He also assembled in the 1780's a reference and teaching collection of minerals, rocks, and ores—the first natural history collection at Harvard—that, following a gift by an English friend, J. C. Lettsom, became a cynosure of the College. Following Waterhouse's dismissal in 1812, the instruction was carried on by John Gorham until 1824. Waterhouse, his colleague Aaron Dexter, and Gorham all were professors in the Harvard Medical School, established 1782. The latter two men successively held an endowed chair therein, the Erving Professorship of Chemistry and Materia Medica. They produced some notable graduates: Parker Cleaveland in 1799, Lyman Spalding in 1797, Joseph Green Cogswell in 1806, John White Webster in 1811, John Fothergill Waterhouse in 1813, and Samuel Luther Dana and James Freeman Dana in 1813. Following years of futile effort by the Administration to establish a professorship of mineralogy and geology, with Cogswell as the selected candidate, the instruction in mineralogy and geology fell to John White Webster in 1824 in the Chemistry Department. The Erving Professorship also passed to him, with a change in title to Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy. Webster's death in 1850, following his conviction for murder in a famous trial, terminated the first period of development of the geological sciences at Harvard. In this period, in spite of the early start by Waterhouse, Harvard lagged much behind the developments at Yale and other colleges in New England and beyond. The main period of development of the geological sciences at Harvard come in the latter 1800's. It was a consequence primarily of the founding of the the Lawrence Scientific School in 1848, with its emphasis on the applied aspects of the sciences, the appointments of Josiah Dwight Whitney and Raphael Pumpelly in 1865 and 1866, respectively to a School of Mines and Practical Geology endowed as a sub-unit therein, and the appointment of Josiah Parsons Cooke in 1850 as successor to Webster in the Chemistry Department.

This article talks about a positive shift in engineering education and applied sciences in global educational institutions such as Harvard. In the past, students at universities such as Harvard suffered due to lack of emphasis on engineering education; however, this has changed now with funding from outside. The roots of engineering professionalization are to be found in France, where as early as 1675, the government organized a corps of military engineers to oversee construction of fortresses and harbors. In 1985, the academic year preceding Prince Charles’s condescending remarks, Harvard awarded only 38 undergraduate degrees in engineering science, plus six master’s degrees and eight doctorates. The boost in the funding for engineering programs brings hope for the students in Harvard at the least.

Streszczenie:
Sustainable development as a concept is a significant landmark in the environmental theory because it hypothesizes on how society itself should be organized, and not merely on why certain environmental safeguards should be embraced or how they can be best applied. Our study determined the sustainability reporting of selected leading global universities in Asia, Europe, and the USA. Using the descriptive and comparative research designs, fifteen higher educational institutions from leading global universities with business schools and institutional sustainability development programs were used as sample cases. Based on the universities’ published Sustainability Reports, several patterns of sustainability reporting practices appeared to be being used. Results revealed that all the sampled universities in Asia, Europe, and USA publish their Stand-Alone Sustainability Reports annually, as well as publish parts of their sustainability performance in their Annual Reports at the end of every academic year. These reports are made available in their websites year-round. Findings also showed that in terms of reporting framework, the universally recognized Global Reporting Initiative is predominantly used by universities in Asia and Europe, followed by the Environmental Management System certifiable under ISO 14001 standards. USA universities, however, use a combination of standards, some not formal, but patterned it after the models such as the UN Global Standards, Corporate Knights, International Sustainability Campus Network/GULF Framework, and People and Planet Green League. Among the four priority concerns on sustainability reporting, environmental indicators obtained the highest average frequency; followed by governance, social, and economic indicators among the three regions, led by Europe and US universities. Overall, the level of sustainability disclosure is high in all the four indicators, and it is highest among European universities, followed by US universities, and then by Asian universities. We recommend that Philippine universities benchmark their sustainability reporting practices in the manner by which leading global universities practice them. ReferencesBlessing, L. (2009). Streszczenie:
Today, energy has become one of the most indispensable necessities in the world. Most of the wars and the disputes between the countries have been arising because of the increasing scarcity of energy resources. Therefore, like most country, Turkey has also started to develop new energy policies for more efficient production and utilization of energy. In order to help the understanding of more efficient energy utilization, so far there have been some researches made about energy and exergy (available energy) utilization efficiencies of Turkey with the viewpoint of the quality of energy. In this study, it is aimed to examine energy system of Turkey by computing energy and exergy utilization efficiencies between 1990 and 2006 using the first and the second laws of thermodynamics. The utility sector energy efficiencies are found to range from 41% to 47% and the exergy efficiencies to range from 42% and 48% between 1990 and 2006. The energy efficiencies of the end use sectors of Turkey , namely Industrial, Transportation, Agricultural and Residential-Commercial sectors, are respectively 62%, 22%, 27% and 55% on the average with respect to years. On the other hand, their average exergy efficiencies are 33%, 23%, 27% and 7% between the examined years. The total end use energy and exergy efficiencies are 49% and 21% on the average. Overall energy efficiencies of Turkey range between 37% and 41%, whereas overall exergy efficiencies range between 16% and 17%. Within all the sectors, Residential&ndash
Commercial sector is found as the sector having the highest exergetic improvement potential.

Streszczenie:
Many of the colleges in the North Carolina Community College System have embarked on a "quality" journey to continuously improve the educational programs and services that they provide to their communities. The primary focus of this study was to determine the level of Total Quality Management (TQM) principles implemented in selected North Carolina community colleges and to determine if there was a difference in the perception of its implementation between administrators and faculty. Additionally, this study examined the influence of the following variables on the implementation of TQM in selected North Carolina community colleges: personal factors (age, gender, ethnicity, and length of employment) and organizational factors (length of institutional involvement in TQM, institutional service area, institutional size, and institutional participation in the Carolina Quality Consortium). Furthermore, the study also gathered data about the positive and negative outcomes as a result of TQM/quality. Data for this study were obtained from a survey instrument that was based on the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. The survey instrument was mailed to eight full-time administrators and eight full-time faculty members from 29 North Carolina community colleges. Twenty of the institutions belonged to the Carolina Quality Consortium. The remaining institutions represented a convenient sample of the 36 North Carolina community colleges that were not members of the Carolina Quality Consortium. Four hundred sixty-four surveys were mailed and 368 were returned. The overall percentage of survey return was 79.3. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for the analysis of data. An alpha level of.05 was used for all statistical tests. The major conclusions were: (1) there are different levels of TQM implementation among! the community colleges identified in this study, (2) there is a difference between the perception of TQM between administrators and faculty members, (3) the length of employment at the institution is a factor in the perception of the implementation of TQM, (4) age, gender, and ethnicity are not factors on the perceptions of the implementation of TQM, (5) the length of involvement in TQM, the service area, the size of the institution, and participation in the Carolina Quality Consortium are not factors on the overall quality ratings, (6) the positive outcomes perceived as having resulted from TQM/quality initiatives included improved communication, improved support systems, customer service, and increased involvement in planning and decision-making, and (7) the negative outcomes perceived as having resulted from TQM/quality were incongruence in philosophy and practice, too much time wasted, work overloads, and endless paperwork.

Cirstea, Florica-Corina. "Nonlinear Methods in the Study of Singular Partial Differential Equations". Thesis, 2004. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/310/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Nonlinear singular partial differential equations arise naturally when studying models from such areas as Riemannian geometry, applied probability, mathematical physics and biology. The purpose of this thesis is to develop analytical methods to investigate a large class of nonlinear elliptic PDEs underlying models from physical and biological sciences. These methods advance the knowledge of qualitative properties of the solutions to equations of the form &Delta u= &fnof(x,u) where &Omega is a smooth domain in R^N (bounded or possibly unbounded) with compact (possibly empty) boundary &part&Omega. A non-negative solution of the above equation subject to the singular boundary condition u(x)&rarr &infin as dist(x,&part&Omega)&rarr 0 (if &Omega&ne R^N), or u(x)&rarr &infin as | x | &rarr &infin (if &Omega=R^N) is called a blow-up or large solution; in the latter case the solution is called an entire large solution. Issues such as existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behavior of blow-up solutions are the main questions addressed and resolved in this dissertation. The study of similar equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, along with that of ODEs, supplies basic tools for the theory of blow-up. The treatment is based on devices used in Nonlinear Analysis such as the maximum principle and the method of sub and super-solutions, which is one of the main tools for finding solutions to boundary value problems. The existence of blow-up solutions is examined not only for semilinear elliptic equations, but also for systems of elliptic equations in R^N and for singular mixed boundary value problems. Such a study is motivated by applications in various fields and stimulated by very recent trends in research at the international level. The influence of the nonlinear term &fnof(x,u) on the uniqueness and asymptotics of the blow-up solution is very delicate and still eludes researchers, despite a very extensive literature on the subject. This challenge is met in a general setting capable of modelling competition near the boundary (that is, 0&sdot &infin near &part &Omega), which is very suitable to applications in population dynamics. As a special feature, we develop innovative methods linking, for the first time, the topic of blow-up in PDEs with regular variation theory (or Karamata's theory) arising in applied probability. This interplay between PDEs and probability theory plays a crucial role in proving the uniqueness of the blow-up solution in a setting that removes previous restrictions imposed in the literature. Moreover, we unveil the intricate pattern of the blow-up solution near the boundary by establishing the two-term asymptotic expansion of the solution and its variation speed (in terms of Karamata's theory). The study of singular phenomena is significant because computer modelling is usually inefficient in the presence of singularities or fast oscillation of functions. Using the asymptotic methods developed by this thesis one can find the appropriate functions modelling the singular phenomenon. The research outcomes prove to be of significance through their potential applications in population dynamics, Riemannian geometry and mathematical physics.

Streszczenie:
The improvement of practical activities in engineering courses has become currently an objective of higher education centers. In the present work, the authors present the results obtained from the application of simulation as a tool of active teaching methodology in the discipline of Control Systems in the courses of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the School of Technology of the University of the State of Amazonas. It is a matter of introducing in the practical components of the discipline the latest guidelines of the National Curriculum Guidelines, DNC, which support the improvement of the didactic ways of teaching the contents, linking them to ensure a greater number of practical experiences and individual work, to encourage more expressive results in the acquisition of knowledge with the use of new technologies. In the case of the active flipped classroom methodology, applied in the work, it allowed us to advance in multidisciplinary integration processes and new laboratory practices in the context of the discipline.

Streszczenie:
This chapter introduces project-based learning approach which is used in the Oulu University of Applied Sciences (OUAS), School of Engineering and Natural Resources, Mechanical Engineering Department to get local companies to offer project works to mechanical engineering students. The concept is based on organizing a local event or online event for the companies to come to OUAS campus to present their challenges needing engineering students to solve. The companies are then competing, selling, or pitching their problem for engineering students as the engineering students will then individually select the most interesting cases to be solved, and which has linkage to potential summer job and thesis work opportunities if projects are successful. The concept has proven to be successful, and it has been established as traditional event with many companies returning to the pitching event annually to get their industry problems solved by group of motivated engineering students.

Streszczenie:
This chapter looks at how the first attempts to modernize the Ottoman army in line with the armies of the West were undertaken during the reign of Mahmud I (r. 1730–54). Predominantly inspired by France, the reform program involved the recruitment of French officials for military advice, the introduction of instruction in applied sciences, the opening of engineering schools, the transformation of the School of Mathematics into the Bahriye (School of Naval Engineering) in 1776, and the translation of various European scientific works into Ottoman Turkish. A new phase of extensive Western-inspired reforms continued under Sultan Selim III and his successor Mahmud II, but despite this turn to the West, there remained little Ottoman interest in Western political thought or regime types until the nineteenth century.

Streszczenie:
Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education teach the four disciplines in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Globally, the STEM areas are in the forefront of economic development. The government of Nigeria has already forged partnerships and is drawing upon the technological experience of other countries to build new STEM learning opportunities for Nigerian students. The federal government has established several federal universities of science and technology with the sole purpose of improving the teaching of STEM areas. Traditional education in Nigeria challenges range from poverty, poor school funding, poorly trained teachers, inadequate learning aids, incessant strikes, among others. It is time that Nigeria realizes that women and girls continue to be extremely underrepresented in the sciences and incorporate them in the new programme because ensuring that more girls receive a quality education will reap dividends for the safety, security, and prosperity of the nation and for the next generations.
