Streszczenie:
The Hand-Print concept emerged as a proposition for learner-led action learning in the Centre for Environment Education, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Hand-Print CARE as an ethics-led action learning proposition was developed at a Local Culture for Understanding Mathematics and Science (LOCUMS) research group meeting with some educators in Alta, Norway. Here ‘CARE’ emerged as an acronym reflecting an ethic of inclusive respect through Concern for others, being Attentive to needs, showing Respect for each other and being Engaged in learning actions for the common good. Hand-Print CARE was thus activated as a co-engaged mediation process towards ‘Learning to look after others to best care for ourselves and the surroundings we all share’. Conceptual tools towards a Hand-Print CARE rationale were clarified in subsequent ESD workshops in Malaysia and Mexico and the challenge of developing a schema for ESD in school subject disciplines emerged at an ESD training workshop with National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) in Delhi, India. This article explores the emergence of Hand-Print CARE and the framing of an open-ended schema for mediating better-situated and ethics-led action learning in school subject disciplines. A formative perspective towards more locally situated and co-engaged processes for mediating learning was refined through an ESD Expert-Net collaboration to clarify ESD learning progressions in school subject disciplines. Some start-up materials were developed with partnering NGOs in the small town of Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and in an expanding collaboration involving partners in India, Mexico, Germany and South Africa. Each of us worked to refine Hand-Print CARE learning progressions for ESD processes of action learning in diverse subject discipline and school-in-community settings.

Abstract This paper charts communist print worlds in colonial India during the interwar period. Beginning in the early 1920s, self-declared ‘Communist’ and ‘Bolshevik’ publications began surfacing across India. Through the example of the Kirti Kisan Sabha (Workers and Peasants Party: a communist group in the north-western province of Punjab), and its associated publications, this paper will provide a glimpse into the rich, diverse and imaginative print worlds of Indian communism. From 1926 onwards, Kirti publications became a part of a thriving print culture in which a dizzying variety of revolutionary, socialist and communist publications competed and conversed with the equally prolific and rich print worlds of their political and ideological rivals. Removed on the one hand from the ivory towers of party intellectuals, dense treatises and officious theses, and on the other hand from the framing of sedition, rebellion and fanaticism in the colonial archive, Kirti publications show how the global project of communist internationalism became distinctly provincialized and vernacularized in British India.

Abstract In 1998, Michael Bowen summarized an ICSU Press workshop on electronic publishing [1]. It is reprinted below (in this issue of Chemistry International) and I have been invited to give a 2023 perspective on its conclusions. In 1998, Wendy Warr was chair of the IUPAC Committee on Printed and Electronic Publications (CPEP was the predecessor of the current CPCDS) and Mike Bowen was Secretary. It was an advisory function of the committee to keep-up with how the landscape of electronic publishing was evolving. Before I address those conclusions more specifically, it is worth mentioning some electronic publishing advances of the 1990s. Carnegie Mellon University advertised an opening for an “electronic librarian” as early as 1991. Some electronic products predate the World Wide Web (e.g., arXiv preprints which were first emailed using TeX in 1991). The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) was launched in October 1997. SpringerLink, Elsevier’s ScienceDirect, and PubMed were all available in 1998. The American Chemical Society (ACS) and Chemical Abstracts Service launched ChemPort in December 1997, in collaboration with seven other publishers. ACS had reinvented its journals for the Web with Articles as Soon as Possible (ASAP), search tools to find specific articles easily, and links to databases, and to cited articles through ChemPort. The scene was clearly set for electronic publishing, and so let’s move to the eight 1998 predictions from the ICSU Press workshop.

With creativity, items that have no value and are often considered trash can be turned into a product with high economic value, for example leaves. Shanti Permatasari as a creative industry player for home handicrafts created by Shan's Craft uses leaves as raw materials to make various products using the Eco-print technique. Eco-print is a method of coloring and printing natural motifs on fabrics that utilizes leaves or flowers that grow in the yard as a substitute for chemical liquids and is also environmentally friendly. Coloring using natural elements will not cause environmental damage. The development of creative industries is needed to foster community creativity, especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Creative industries in the form of handicrafts get enough attention, especially as souvenirs and souvenirs. With the existing potential, the production of the Shan's Craft creation house in the form of handicrafts using the Eco-print technique needs to be supported to increase production and marketing more seriously. Although this business has promising opportunities, there are obstacles in the production process due to the limited space of the workshop which limits the space for movement, production, and even for displaying product displays. In terms of financial management, businesses still combine personal finance and business finance, there is no clear cash flow report on a regular basis. This causes the business to have no clear advantages/disadvantages and is relatively slow to develop. Through this service program, the implementation team offers solutions in the form of expansion and construction of product display rooms for promotional needs, creation of online media accounts as a means of digital promotion, and financial management training and simple bookkeeping of financial statements. The targeted outputs are increased production and sales of eco-print batik, maximum utilization of product display space in reaching the target market, and expanding the market through the use of online media such as social media and e-commerce.

Print textbooks were more beneficial for students’ learning, and students felt that print textbooks should not be replaced by eTextbooks. On the other hand, most of the students’ experiences with eTextbooks were negative. Aside from agreeing and disagreeing with stated reasons for using and not using eTextbooks, students freely expressed their personal viewpoints on eTextbook usage. Abstract The article (developing a paper presented at 2010 SHARP international conference) investigates the ways grand Faust editions from the 1850s and 1870s make sense as equivocal cultural objects migrating within and beyond Germany. Scholars have focused on these imposing tomes to herald the play as expression of a nation-centred claim, with Faust as heroic myth. This interpretation relied on costly plates and external characteristics for principal evidence. This article instead draws attention to circulation, transformations and fuller readings of these items, combining first-hand research in many collections. On the one hand, it looks into the editorial versions as adjustable to different audiences and cultures, using editorial data, reception evidence, and image analysis. On the other, it shows how fuller readings of a tome, based on material, symbolic and archival evidence, tell two different stories. This study of a text’s print apparel and circulation, at odds with its significance as a national myth, has implications well beyond this singular work.

This paper addresses, starting from an extensive series of tests in longitudinal regular waves (already done) and irregular waves (in progress), the problems connected with the threshold formulation for parametric rolling and its amplitude modeling above threshold. Both head and following waves have been considered, also in view of the greater attention to head sea conditions called for during International Maritime Organisation Subcommittee on Stability and Load Lines, and on Fishing Vessels Safety (IMO/ SLF) discussion on the revision of the Intact Stability Code. Particular attention is given in the regular wave case to the nonlinear damping, nonlinear restoring, and nonlinear parametric excitation terms. The mathematical models so developed are "compared" with experimental results by means of an ad hoc parameter estimation technique. It is, on the other hand, well known that several different thresholds can be proposed in the case of irregular waves and that the nonlinear modeling of roll motion variance above threshold is at present not properly addressed. Here, too, a series of experiments will be conducted in the presence of narrow band irregular waves having the bandwidth as parameter. A mathematical description of the nonlinear parametric rolling can be obtained with the use of approximate analytical techniques.

Noël Coward and Rebecca West shared a long friendship, and often met each other at theatrical openings, on transatlantic liners, and at parties hosted by the ‘international set’. Their wary negotiation with one another's celebrity and cultural value played out not only at these social events but also in print, through reviews, gossip columns, and memoirs. Using the relationship between Coward and West as a case study, this essay explores the social scene of modernism, paying particular attention to the suggestion of theatricality in the word ‘scene’. It takes up the notion of the ‘modernist party’ as, on the one hand, a kind of stage on which celebrities from different spheres performed together, and, on the other, a happening which, through reports in print, contributed to the forming of literary reputations and to the public fascination with modern style.

AbstractA large panel of the Last Supper (fig. 1) can now be attributed to Karel van Mander the Younger (Haarlem c. 1583 – Delft 1623), after cleaning by the present owner, Douwes Fine Art in Amsterdam. The monogram at lower right (fig. 3), on the base of the pillar, has been identified as being that of the young artist and not of his father, the famous painter and writer of the Schilder-boeck, Karel van Mander the Elder. This painting is the first one by Karel van Mander the Younger to have been discovered.Although it is known that the young Karel van Mander had been trained as a painter in his father's workshop and registered at the latest in 1613 as a painter in the Delft guild of St Luke, the artist has until now only been known as a designer for tapestries. This he did from about 1604 at the workshop of François Spiering, which he left in 1615 to start his own tapestry workshop. The numerous sources on this period speak mostly of the difficult, troublemaking character of Van Mander, who's family fled to Denmark after his untimely death in 1623.The Last Supper is intriguing for its many borrowings from prints by and after artists from Karel van Mander the Elder's circle. The pose of several figures as well as some details of the tableware appear to have been derived from a large print by Jan Harmensz. Muller after a painting by Gillis Coignet (fig. 5). Three oddly large hands of figures at left, centre and right, are repetitions of hands from the Apostles series by Hendrick Goltzius of 1589, as is the upwards turned head of the apostle at upper left (figs. 6-8).Some of the figures have been identified by Elisabeth Valentiner, in her study on Karel van Mander the Elder of 1930, as portraits. Whereas one of them, at left of Christ, might indeed have been modelled after the print by Goltzius of Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert (fig. 9), the identification of the person at lower right, left of the pillar, as Goltzius, is not convincing. The only actual portrait seems to be the more contemporary looking figure at upper right, whose reaching hand has been derived from yet another print by Jan Muller after Goltzius. Although not convincingly applicable for this painting, the use of portraits in a Last Supper was not uncommon. In the Schilder-boeck Van Mander described a, now lost, series of Christ and the Apostles with portraits of artists on which his friend Cornelis Ketel was working.Another interesting aspect of the painting is its date of 1602. This was the year that Van Mander's friend Bartholomeus Spranger, the court painter of Rudolf II, visited Amsterdam and Haarlem, where he was received by artists and rhetoricians. It is tempting to see the painting, possibly a joint project of both father and son Van Mander, as having been made in honour of this visit, as a tribute to Spranger with borrowings from prints by the two artists who engraved his designs, Hendrick Goltzius and Jan Muller. As such a large panel must have been made on commission, the Amsterdam notary and art patron Jacques Razet, a close friend of Karel van Mander the Elder, to whom the above mentioned print by Jan Harmensz. Muller was dedicated, comes to mind, also for the fact that he was known to support young artists.

Abstract. This paper presents recent advances in the design of an underactuated hand for applications in prosthetics. First, the design of the fingers is addressed. Based on previous experiments with prototypes developed in the past, new tendon routings are proposed that lead to a more effective transmission of the forces. A novel elastic tendon routing is also proposed for the passive opening of the hand. A simplified static analysis of the fingers is proposed to support the results. Then, a new kinematic design of the thumb is presented. The thumb is designed to perform out-of-the-plane motions in order to broaden the variety of possible grasps. A mechanism for the implementation of underactuation between the fingers is proposed that alleviates the friction problems encountered in earlier hand designs. Finally, a prototype of the hand is briefly described and typical grasps are shown. This paper was presented at the IFToMM/ASME International Workshop on Underactuated Grasping (UG2010), 19 August 2010, Montréal, Canada.

Abstract. The Delft Hand 2 (DH-2) is an underactuated robot hand meant for industrial applications, having six degrees of freedom (DoF), one actuator (DoA) and no sensors. It was designed to provide a cheap and robust hand to grasp a large range of objects without damaging them. The goal of this paper is to assess the design and performance of the DH-2, demonstrating how the design was optimized for its intended application area and how the hand was simplified to make it commercially attractive. Performance tests show that the DH-2 has a payload of 2 kg for an object range of 60 to 120 mm, it can close or open within 0.5 s, and it only uses open-loop control by means of the input voltage of the motor. The results demonstrate that the industrial need of a simple, cheap and effective robotic hand can be achieved with the principle of underactuation and the use of conventional components. Abstract. The concept called gesture-changeable under-actuated (GCUA) function is utilized to improve the dexterities of traditional under-actuated hands and reduce the control difficulties of dexterous hands. Based on GCUA function, a novel mechanical finger by multiple tendons: GCUA-T finger, is designed. The finger uses tendon mechanisms to achieve GCUA function which includes traditional underactuated (UA) grasping motion and special pre-bending (PB, or pre-shaping) motion before UA grasping. Operation principles and force analyses of the fingers are given, and the effect of GCUA function on the movements of a hand is discussed. The finger can satisfy the requirements of grasping and operating with low dependence on control system and low cost on manufacturing expenses, which develops a new way between dexterous hand and traditional under-actuated hand. Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) was a significant political alliance formed in 2020, comprising major opposition parties in Pakistan. The PDM came into power as a result of a 'no-confidence-motion' (NCM) against the then Prime Minister Mr Imran Khan in April 2022. The NCM and its consequences are very interesting given the fact that this 'political move' was very first of its kind in the history of Pakistan which resulted in the toppling of a democratically elected PM. The move and its subsequent political result i.e. the formation of the PDM government received a variety of coverage in the media. This study is an attempt to explore the coverage of PDM government-related issues by dailies The Dawn and The News International from February 2022 to August 2022. This research is an attempt to determine and analyze the predominant narratives produced by the selected newspapers regarding the PDM government in their editorials. Employing the content analysis, we have found out that the variety of viewpoints on the PDM government have been highlighted by the selected newspapers. The Dawn exhibited a slightly oppositional stance through a range of tones and critical evaluations. The News International, on the other hand, acknowledges the complexity of the government's performance and offers a more measured review.

The pragmatic requirements of such a device to be light enough to be worn and used regularly have meant that any multi degree of freedom prosthetic hand must have fewer actuators than the usable degrees of freedom. Aesthetics ensures that while the hand needs five fingers, five actuators have considerable mass, and only in recent years has it even been possible to construct a practical anthropomorphic hand with five motors. Thus there is an important trade off as to which fingers are driven, and which joints on which fingers are actuated, and how the forces are distributed to create a functional device. This paper outlines some of the historical solutions created for this problem and includes those designs of recent years that are now beginning to be used in the commercial environment. This paper was presented at the IFToMM/ASME International Workshop on Underactuated Grasping (UG2010), 19 August 2010, Montréal, Canada.

There have been several positive developments in the areas of Hebrew typography, fine and private printing, and artists' books from 1991 to 1993. The paper discusses recent typefaces by the Jerusalem designer Zvi Narkiss; the typographic experiments of Ariel Wardi, former head of the Printing Department of Hadassah College of Technology in Jerusalem, as well as a new Hebrew display letter, "Hillel," designed by Scott-Martin Kosofsky for the Harvard Hillel Sabbath Songbook. The works of two private presses are examined: that of the Santa Monica private printer Jacob Samuel in a book illustrated by Micha Ulmann, and that of Jerusalem's designer-bookbinder, Yehuda Miklaf. Two significant artists' books have appeared recently: Maftir Yonah, a limited hand-printed edition with calligraphy by David Moss and etchings by Mordechai Beck, printed at the Jerusalem Print Workshop, and The Six Days of Creation, a work in monoprint, with calligraphy and drawing by Malla Carl. Another milestone is the 1992 Hebrew translation by Israel's veteran printing expert, Gideon Stern, of the printer's manual, Bruckmann's Handbuch der Drucktechnik as Sefer ha-defus. It includes the history and essentials of Hebrew typography and serves as an invaluable reference work for the new generation of Hebrew printers.

Abstract Taking up an analysis of the materiality of the American Mission Press (AMP) bilingual catalogs printed from 1884 to 1896 in Ottoman Beirut, in this article I identify these booklets as publications that circulated among broad networks of books, journals and newspapers during the period of the Arab nahda. By examining these catalogs in terms of the wider historical significance of their materiality, specifically their organization, layout, typography and illustrations, in this essay I show how these booklets promoted the AMP and its mission’s entangled messages in an increasingly competitive publishing industry. On the one hand, the catalogs highlighted the AMP’s ‘western’ qualifications and strove to engage local readers’ interests in ‘modern’ culture, science and technology. On the other hand, these works marketed the mission’s universalist evangelical views. Thus, in this study I show how such ephemeral publications, when studied for their dynamic content, make evident nineteenth-century Arabic print commerce at work and also illustrate early examples of nascent advertising practices.

Objectives: To reach agreement on standardized protocols for assessing upper limb strength and grip and pinch force for upper limb reconstructive surgery for tetraplegia. Methods: Selected members of an expert panel composed of international therapists formed at the 2018 International Congress for Upper Limb Surgery for Tetraplegia conducted a literature review of current practice that identified gaps and inconsistencies in measurement protocols and presented to workshop attendees. To resolve discrepancies, a set of questions was presented to workshop attendees who voted electronically. Consensus was set at 75% agreement. Results: For manual muscle testing, consensus was reached for using the Medical Research Council scale, without plus or minus, and the use of resistance through range when testing grade 4 and grade 5 strength. Pectoralis major and serratus anterior should be routinely tested, however there was no consensus on other shoulder muscles. Grip and pinch strength should be tested according to the American Society of Hand Therapists positioning. For grip strength, either the Jamar or Biometrics dynamometer expressed in kilograms should be used. For grip and pinch strength, three measurements should be performed at each testing. No consensus was reached on a device for pinch strength. Conclusion: This work is an important step to enable comparable data in the future. Further consensus methods will work toward developing more comprehensive guidelines in this population. Building international consensus for pre- and postoperative measures of function supports objective evaluation of novel therapies and interpretation of multicenter studies.

This workshop aims to present the outlines of a research project situated in the interdisciplinary research domain of bibliotherapy: the use of literature in healthcare contexts. With this project we want to demonstrate that different syndromes and pain experiences require a diversification of the (prescribed or non-prescribed) texts and the associated reading practice. On the one hand, the project aims to refine the international discourse of bibliotherapy on this central point. On the other hand, through concrete reading and co-reading sessions with participants from different medical backgrounds (cancer patients, the elderly, patients in rehabilitation, renal dialysis patients), we aim to gain a sharper insight into various bibliotherapeutic needs associated with specific syndromes. The project brings together a team of literary scholars and medical experts who, with their joint efforts, want to make a significant contribution to the interdisciplinary domain of health humanities and narrative medicine. In the project we want to find out how literary texts have a therapeutic effect in specific care contexts and we want to increase that effect through a better understanding of the functioning of that text. We assume that the therapeutic effect of literary texts is determined by an interplay between the text itself (with its specific characteristics), the way and circumstances of reading and the mental and physical state of the patient-reader. In the workshop we want to present the outline of the project and together with participants simulate a shared reading session.

Publications of fieldwork continue to appear slowly, but the latest volume of ADelt for Crete, covering the years 2001–2004, appeared in print in summer 2012 (ADelt 56–59 [2001–2004] B5). Inevitably, given the years covered, some of the activity summarized in this volume has already been noted in AG and brief notices of some appears in the decadal summary of the activities of all the prehistoric and Classical ephorias (www.yppo.gr/0/anaskafes; AR 58 [2011–2012] 58). Emphasis here is on those activities not already noted in AG or those where significant new information appears in the new volume of ADelt. The second meeting on Archaeological Work on Crete (AWiC2), alluded to last year (AR 58 [2011–2012] 58), has been published and can be read online through the University of Crete's Library (http://elocus.lib.uoc.gr/dlib/d/0/5/metadata-dlib-1368695830-557833-31681.tkl#). A third meeting is scheduled for December 2013 and will hopefully be made accessible with equally commendable promptness. The proceedings of the Tenth International Cretological Congress held in Chania in 2006 (see AR 53 [2006–2007] 96) are still to appear in print, although e-offprints of individual contributions continue to circulate. New material in this year's entry is therefore drawn primarily from ADelt 56–59 (2001–2004) B5 and AWiC2.The past year has seen a number of significant publications on prehistoric Crete, including the proceedings of several conferences. The publication by the BSA of Intermezzo: Intermediacy and Regeneration in Middle Minoan III Palatial Crete (Macdonald and Knappett [2013]), containing papers presented at a workshop held in 2008, complements volumes noted last year (AR 58 [2011–2012] 58) on Late Minoan IB ceramics (Brogan and Hallager [2011]) and on the Prepalatial and Protopalatial periods (Early Minoan to Middle Minoan II) (Schoep et al. Abstract. The property of form-closure of a grasp, as generally defined in the literature, is based on the assumption that contact points between the hand and the object are fixed in space. However, this assumption is false when considering a grasp exerted by an underactuated hand, since in this case, it is not possible to control the position of each phalanx independently. In spite of researchers' interest in studying form-closure, none of the available published work on this subject takes into consideration the particular kinematics of underactuated hands. Actually, there are few available tools to qualify or quantify the stability of a grasp exerted by an underactuated hand, thus the design of underactuated hands mostly results from an intuitive approach. This paper aims to reduce this gap. A classification of underactuated hands is proposed, based on the expression of contact forces. This highlights the influence of non-backdrivable mechanisms introduced in the transmission of the closing motion of the hand on the stability of the grasp. The way to extend the original definition of form-closure to underactuated grasps is illustrated. A more general definition is formulated, which checks the stability of the set "object + hand". Using this new definition, a simple rule is proposed for designing a hand capable of achieving 1st order form-closed grasps. This study analyzed the coverage of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) news by three prominent Bangladeshi dailies named The Daily Star, The Daily Kalerkantho, and The Daily Ittefaq. The research aimed to explore the attention cycle of the selected newspapers about this ongoing outbreak. It also identified the significant differences in framing and used sources in the news stories by respective daily newspapers. The study period was 10 weeks from February 1 to April 10, 2020, considering the Global Health Emergency declaration by the World Health Organization on January 30, 2020, and the announcement of the pandemic on March 11, 2020. This research applied the content analysis method on 761 news articles. The study shows that these three newspapers gave more attention after the pandemic announcement. This study also revealed that The Daily Star emphasized on attributing responsibility to the government and statistical data frames. On the other hand, The Daily Kalerkantho highlighted the individual’s responsibility frame. The Daily Ittefaq concentrated on the economic consequence frame. Regarding the news sources, The Daily Star significantly used more sources from government officials. In contrast, The Daily Kalerkantho relied more on experts, and The Daily Ittefaq frequently used international sources. Due to time limitations, this study only covered the early stage of COVID-19 in Bangladesh. So more samples with a more extended period might clearly illustrate the focus of print media regarding this pandemic. Journalism and media studies students, academicians, and journalists will be most beneficiaries of this study. As appropriate framing helps to build awareness and in-depth knowledge of the community as well as policymakers, print media should pay more attention to proper framing. The history of slavery is by no means untouched, and there are now even ambitious global histories of the phenomenon in print. On the other hand, it is clear that much of the literature on this sombre side of human society has concentrated on the Transatlantic slave trade and non-free labour in the Americas. The relative wealth of documents in Western languages has presumably contributed to give the historiography of slavery a Western centre of gravity, coupled with the fact that the early modern Americas were restructured into settlement colonies. This made slavery a motor of socio-economic change in a more pronounced way than in Asian societies. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that the handling of slaves in an Asiatic context has been less thoroughly treated in the extant academic literature. It seems that aspects of Asian slavery have not fit well into the preconceptions of Asianists, or have at least been relegated to the margins of social history.

Abstract. In light of technological advances, researchers have lost sight of robotic grippers/end effectors design intent. In a semi-structured environment the biomimetic approach is impractical due to the high complexity of the mechanism and control algorithms. Current industrial grippers are robust, but lack the flexibility that allows for in hand manipulation. The authors believe that underactuated grippers provide the best approach to allow for in hand manipulation along with being rugged enough for an industrial setting. Thinking of the robotic gripper and the robotic arm as one system (as opposed to two separate subsystems), one is capable of using the degrees of freedom of the robot in conjunction with that of the gripper to provide the desired motion profile without the complexity of running two subsystems. This paper will outline where recent grippers have failed and will introduce a new design paradigm for grippers along with several underactuated gripper ideas. The Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL) was formally constituted in 1994 with the aim of enabling European research libraries to collaborate on assembling the printed heritage of the hand press period in Europe and the wider world for the benefit of scholarship. On the tenth anniversary of its foundation, the Hand Press Book Database is now a substantial resource, and research libraries from all parts of Europe and beyond are investing in developing this important resource for early European printed material. The Consortium's original focus has extended to embrace other initiatives sought by scholars such as a multi-lingual thesaurus for place, author and imprint names in early printed material, a manuscripts and print search facility, and member services. Steps have been taken to determine the exact niche that the Consortium should seek to fill within a European ‘information landscape’, and in the wider sphere of international scholarship. A vital aspect of further development is to extend membership as widely as possible to research libraries, book historians, the antiquarian book trade, individual researchers and all those concerned with the early written heritage of Europe. An important step in this direction is widening membership to include libraries and important European historical collections in countries in the wider ‘diaspora’.

The parent's role in independent character cultivation of elementary school students during the COVID-19 pandemic is a must, considering the current state of learning at home so that parents become the spearhead in the education process, one of which is in terms of developing the independent character of elementary school children. Independent character is necessary to be developed in elementary school children during the current COVID-19 pandemic, due to this pandemic, people including elementary school children, must be able to carry out protocols independently, such as maintaining hand hygiene, avoiding touching their eyes, nose and mouth, applying coughing or sneezing ethics, wearing a mask, keeping a safe distance. Therefore, for elementary school children to be able to carry out these protocols independently, the parents' role in developing the independent character of elementary school children during the current Covid-19 pandemic is considered important. The importance of developing independent character is because at the age of elementary school children are still not used to maintaining personal hygiene, especially personal hygiene when outside home.

Abstract. There is a lack of agreement in the literature as to what exactly quantifies the performance of underactuated hands. This paper proposes two benchmark tests to measure the ability of underactuated hands to grasp different objects and the ability to hold the objects when force disturbances apply. The first test determines the smallest and largest cylindrical object which can be successfully grasped in an enveloping grasp or in a pinch grasp. The second test provides the maximal allowable force which can be applied to a grasped object without loosing it. A setup was constructed consisting of standard components. Exemplary tests were applied to the Delft Hand 2. The proposed benchmark tests are representative to quantify the performance of pick and place operations with underactuated hands. The results of the tests can be applied to evaluate, compare, and improve the performance of robotic hands. Abstract. Given an underactuated tendon-driven finger, the finger posture is underdetermined and can move freely ("flop") in a region of slack tendons. This work shows that such an underactuated finger can be operated in tendon force control (rather than position control) with effective performance. The force control eliminates the indeterminate slack while commanding a parameterized space of desired torques. The torque will either push the finger to the joint limits or wrap around an external object with variable torque – behavior that is sufficient for primarily gripping fingers. In addition, introducing asymmetric joint radii to the design allows the finger to command an expanded range of joint torques and to scan an expanded set of external surfaces. This study is motivated by the design and control of the secondary fingers of the NASA-GM R2 humanoid hand. Biometric authentication is a security procedure used to verify a person's identity, based on his or her unique physical characteristics. Multiple biometric authentication systems use more than one physiological feature of an individual for the purpose of identification and verification and they are a superior solution for every industry that demands higher accuracy as well as security. This method proposes a contact less multiple biometric authentication system which uses palm print and hand geometry features. A temperature sensor is integrated in this system for detecting elevated body temperatures. A high body temperature or fever is related to many diseases and can be a first indicator whether a person is healthy or not. Using the SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) algorithm, this design achieves robust local feature detection and extraction in an image.

How far they were from the curvy-line Art Nouveau. The designers consciously and creatively used their native tradition, especially the furniture making of the Biedermeier period and folk art. On the one hand, Polish artists drew from the architecture of manor interiors, and on the other they were close to the inspiration of an English home. Their projects can be compared with the works of Austrian artists from the circle of the Vienna Workshop and German artists associated with the Deutscher Werkbund. This article examines interactions between diplomatic representation, state bureaucracy, and rhetoric in early modern diplomacy. It analyzes manuscripts in the hand of the poet Andrew Marvell, which he wrote as secretary to the Earl of Carlisle’s 1663–64 embassy to Moscow. The manuscripts show how a battle over diplomatic ceremony and honor unfolded into disputes over the forms and decorum used in a lively exchange of diplomatic letters and written complaints. These texts were edited, translated, and published for English and international audiences by another embassy secretary, Guy Miège. The article traces the afterlife of the embassy letters in print, arguing that Marvell and Miège became central agents in shaping how the embassy was perceived at home and further afield. The wider context of public diplomacy drew from the secretaries’ considerable skill in framing diplomatic letters for consumption by different audiences. Early modern ambassadors performed rituals of sovereignty, symbolizing status and rank, but the complex art of diplomatic image-making was also directed by lower-ranking embassy personnel. Examining the relationship between bureaucratic practices and the performative nature of diplomacy, this article shows how secretaries exerted significant influence on the reception of early modern diplomatic relations.

This paper deals with the Romanian experience as a developer of projects and investor of resources in the countries of the Global South during the 1970s. It follows the country’s grand narrative in its Communist Party’s documents, as compared to that of the statements of the international meetings of the communist parties in the 1960s and 1970s and to that present in the party’s newspaper Scinteia, and in contrast to documents of the political executive committee of the Romanian Communist Party collected from the Romanian National Archives and the Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives. The purpose of this research is to analyse the Romanian solidarity messages in the party discourse, their degree of compliance with the solidarity messages of the rest of the countries in the socialist camp, actual actions of humanitarian assistance in the countries of the Global South, and how those actions and messages were filtered and transmitted to the Romanian readers of print press. The results indicate a discrepancy between public discourse and archival discourse on the one hand, and the nature of information disclosed to the public, on the other.

Tourism communication, especially since the digital turn, has registered several attempts to open to new forms of multilingualism. For instance, the traditional multilingual experience offered by guided tours and audio guides has now been enhanced by social networking tools. Recent research points to the need of interdisciplinary work at the crossroads of linguistics, media sciences and museum studies to investigate communication strategies and linguistic devices by means of which an international audience of tourists can be addressed and get involved in museums in the digital age. The present paper illustrates the first findings of the project “Museo poliglotta”, a project run by two universities in the Italian towns of Bergamo and Brescia in cooperation with local museums with the goal of producing digital multilingual contents for international museum visitors. The empirical part of the paper describes a workshop activity in which students developed Instagram reels in Italian, German and English on the figure of the well-known Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. A number of observations lead to the conclusion that synergies between language research and foreign language teaching on the one hand and museum institutions on the other can bring about important benefits for all parties involved, in particular the possibility to offer professionalising training in the academic world and stimuli to innovate and improve multilingual communication in the museum sector.

AbstractRT 036, Taman is a kampong located directly aside from Taman Sari Yogyakarta, an international tourist spot. The kampong residents trade in products correlates with local tourism. They sell their merchandises in their own display houses or through online shops. This workshop is meant to give a practical photography knowledge, specializing in product photo without the need to use high tech and complex photography equipment, to improve the quality of the photo products they displayed in online shops. On the other hand, this workshop also aims to give practical English education, more importantly with things related for tour guide conversation needs and to give concise yet clear and effective product description at online shops so that prospective international buyers get the neccessary information from the offered products. This workshop is done on site in RT 036 Secretary office at April 7 to May 6, 2017, that began with an introduction, theory presentation, practice, and ended with results discussion. After workshop, participants understand that phone camera is sufficient to generate a good quality photo. Combined with simple mini studio equipment, their photo product looks more professional to be presented. Not only that, participants are also able to communicate in simple English, with the vocabularies playing the biggest factor. Thus, participants are more confident in practicing their English skill as it is easier for them to memorize vocabulary than to study grammar.

Streszczenie:
Abstract. Background: Media reporting of suicide events has thus far gone without sufficient scrutiny in Bangladesh. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the quality of newspaper reporting of suicides in Bangladesh against international guidelines. Methods: We used content analysis to assess the quality of suicide reporting in six daily newspapers in Bangladesh. The newspapers were hand-searched between November 2016 and April 2017 and 327 articles reporting on suicide deaths were retrieved. Results: The mean number of suicide articles per day per newspaper was 0.3 (range across newspapers 0.11–0.70) and the mean length was 11.3 sentences. Harmful reporting practices were very common (for example, a detailed suicide method was reported in 75.5% of articles) while almost no potentially helpful reporting practices were observed (for example, no articles gave contact details for a suicide support service). Limitations: The findings are limited to print mass media. Conclusions: We observed that explicit and simplistic reports of suicide deaths were frequently observed in newspapers in Bangladesh. Attempts should be made to understand the perspectives of media professionals in relation to suicide reporting, and to devise strategies to boost the positive contribution that media can make to suicide prevention in this context.

Streszczenie:
The question of the originality of the syntax of native advertising publications in Russian editions of international glossy magazines in 2018-2020 is considered. The relevance of the chosen topic is due to the interest of domestic and foreign experts in one of the modern formats of brand promotion on the market — natural advertising that organically fits into the content of the site, print or online edition and helps to promote the brand’s products to the market. The novelty of the study is associated with the allocation, systematization and description of the main features of native publications: the functioning of bisubstantive sentences, question-answer complexes, connecting structures, definite personal one-part sentences with predicate verbs of the 1st and 2nd person singular; the use of bifunctional exclamation sentences, simple sentences, complicated by inserted constructions and introductory-modal words; the use of non-union complex sentences with explanatory semantic relations, complex sentences with explanatory-object and intrinsic-attributive clauses; introduction of various explicit intertextual units, etc. The author comes to the conclusion that the syntax of texts in the native advertising format as a whole is a hybrid formation, similar to the syntax, on the one hand, of direct advertising texts, and journalistic and PR-texts on the other.

Industry has long been one of the most important drivers of Chinese economic growth. In order to improve the environmental footprint of industrial areas, Chinese authorities have established mechanisms of environmental control in the internal management processes of companies. In this regard, the international standard ISO 14001 for environmental management systems is the management tool that has had widest adoption among Chinese companies since its creation in 1996. The main purposes of the paper are to investigate the available international and national statistics on the adoptionof ISO 14001 in China, and present opinions on ISO 14001 of the 72 representatives of small and medium enterprises and multinational companies of Guangdong province that participated to the workshop “New tools and standards to advance and measure corporate sustainability”, held in Guangzhou on 26 January 2018. The analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) was adopted as the research method to collect opinions on the ISO 14001 standard. Participants were asked to discuss strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities considering four business aspects: sustainability, internal processes, stakeholder engagement, and resource management. Our findings indicate that companies fully embraced ISO 14001 and recognized the necessity of a standardized approach to identify environmental aspects. On the other hand, they also expressed concern about aspects such as the certification cost, the focus on certification itself and not on the improvement of environmental performance, and the lack of integration with sustainability tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and other sustainability paradigms such as circular economy and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

In the modern world, trustworthy and secure identity is essential for a number of uses, such as unlocking personal gadgets and gaining access to secure areas. Conventional techniques, such as PINs and passwords, have shown to be vulnerable to fraud and illegal access. These vulnerabilities have been addressed by the development of biometric authentication, which makes use of an individual's distinct physiological and behavioral characteristics. Unimodal biometric systems concentrate on a single feature, although they frequently face difficulties like noise and spoofing assaults. By merging characteristics from several modalities, multimodal biometric systems provide an answer and improve identification robustness and accuracy. In order to increase identification security and accuracy, this article investigates the combination of hand geometry, palm print, fingerprint, and facial biometrics. Different integration situations and modes of operation for multimodal biometric systems are examined, as well as various fusion methodologies. In summary, the paper ends with implications for biometric systems practitioners, academics, and policymakers as well as a discussion of relevant research topics.

Streszczenie:
This issue of the Journal of Functional Programming is dedicated to work presented at the Workshop on Implicit Computational Complexity in Programming Languages, affiliated with the 1998 meeting of the International Conference on Functional Programming in Baltimore.Several machine-independent approaches to computational complexity have been developed in recent years; they establish a correspondence linking computational complexity to conceptual and structural measures of complexity of declarative programs and of formulas, proofs and models of formal theories. Examples include descriptive complexity of finite models, restrictions on induction in arithmetic and related first order theories, complexity of set-existence principles in higher order logic, and specifications in linear logic. We refer to these approaches collectively as Implicit Computational Complexity. This line of research provides a framework for a streamlined incorporation of computational complexity into areas such as formal methods in software development, programming language theory, and database theory.A fruitful thread in implicit computational complexity is based on exploring the computational complexity consequences of introducing various syntactic control mechanisms in functional programming, including restrictions (akin to static typing) on scoping, data re-use (via linear modalities), and iteration (via ramification of data). These forms of control, separately and in combination, can certify bounds on the time and space resources used by programs. In fact, all results in this area establish that each restriction considered yields precisely a major computational complexity class. The complexity classes thus obtained range from very restricted ones, such as NC and Alternating logarithmic time, through the central classes Poly-Time and Poly-Space, to broad classes such as the Elementary and the Primitive Recursive functions.Considerable effort has been invested in recent years to relax as much as possible the structural restrictions considered, allowing for more exible programming and proof styles, while still guaranteeing the same resource bounds. Notably, more exible control forms have been developed for certifying that functional programs execute in Poly-Time.The 1998 workshop covered both the theoretical foundations of the field and steps toward using its results in various implemented systems, for example in controlling the computational complexity of programs extracted from constructive proofs. The five papers included in this issue nicely represent this dual concern of theory and practice. As they are going to print, we should note that the field of Implicit Computational Complexity continues to thrive: successful workshops dedicated to it were affiliated with both the LICS'99 and LICS'00 conferences. Special issues, of Information and Computation dedicated to the former, and of Theoretical Computer Science to the latter, are in preparation.

Streszczenie:
Since the summer of 1993, the Chinese central party-state has been engaged in a vigorous campaign to reassert control over “thought work,” or the flow of communications messages into and through Chinese society. The chief features of this sustained, omnidirectional crackdown – much more ambitious in scope than earlier, episodic crackdowns such as the 1983–84 “Campaign Against Spiritual Pollution” and 1987 “Campaign Against Bourgeois Liberalization” – include limitations on access to foreign Internet websites; restrictions on satellite television reception; efforts to suppress the surging tide of pornographic and other “bad” print publications; and many other measures aimed at curtailing the circulation of heterodox ideas and images in China. The underlying strategic goal is to restore the Centre's control over the “environment of symbols” from which Chinese people derive many of their most important world views, values and action strategies to pursue interests. If central party-state leaders can resume control over the symbolic environment, they seem to believe they will be much more able to maintain political stability and direct Chinese society towards the achievement of a variety of more specific goals, including reduced crime and corruption, the reform of state-owned enterprises, and the abatement of environmental degradation. On the other hand, a continued haemorrhaging of control over thought work would not only make current problems worse, but could over time facilitate the formation of a semi-autonomous, critical public opinion.
