Root canal preparation in narrow, curved canals is a challenge even for experienced endodontists. Recently nickel-titanium (NiTi) hand files have played an important role in root canal preparation, particularly in curved root canals. Nickel-titanium endodontic instruments were first investigated in 1988 by Walia et al. who found that NiTi files have two to three times more elastic flexibility in bending and torsion, as well as superior resistance to torsional fracture compared with similar stainless steel files.

Resumo: Em alguns casos, o fracasso do tratamento endodôntico indica a necessidade de um retratamento do canal radicular, que pode ser realizado com diversas técnicas, auxiliadas ou não por solvente. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a qualidade e o tempo necessário para desobturação de canais obturados com cimento à base de resina epóxica (AH Plus), cimento experimental à base de MTA e cimento experimental à base de Mamona utilizando-se limas manuais Hedströem e limas rotatórias ProTaper® Retratamento, com ou sem solvente (eucaliptol). 120 raízes de dentes uniradiculares humanos foram instrumentadas e então divididas em 3 grupos de acordo com o cimento utilizado, sendo em seguida radiografadas no sentido mésio-distal e vestíbulo-lingual, com auxílio de uma matriz de silicona. Cada grupo inicial foi subdividido de acordo com a técnica: desobturação manual com ou sem solvente e desobturação rotatória com ou sem solvente, formando um total de 12 grupos com 10 dentes cada. Ao final, os espécimes foram novamente radiografados e alguns espécimes, em caráter ilustrativo, diafanizados. As radiografias iniciais e finais foram digitalizadas e as mesmas foram medidas pelo programa Image Tools comparando os volumes de obturação inicial e remanescente. Os resultados médios obtidos em porcentagem do volume de material obturador remanescente em ordem decrescente foram: AH Plus/rotatório/solvente (39.84) > AH Plus/rotatório (29.85) > AH Plus/manual/solvente (22.37) > mamona/manual (17.17) > mamona/manual/solvente (16.15) > AH Plus/manual (15.89) > MTA/manual (14.12) > MTA/rotatório/solvente (9.71) > MTA/manual/solvente (9.17) > mamona/rotatório/solvente (5.53) > mamona/rotatório (5.14) > MTA/rotatório (2.7). Abstract: Convencional endodontic retreatment has largely used for the management of failed root canal treatment. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness and the time necessary of hand (hedströem file)and rotary (Pro Taper® retreatment) instrumentation for removal of filling material from root canals. 120 extracted uniradicular teeth were selected. The teeth were root filled using thermomechanical compactation of gutta-percha and sealer: MTA-based sealer, polymer castor oil-based sealer or AH Plus. After 7 days, the roots were randomized in groups and the filling material was removed using the following techniques: hand instrumentation with or without eucalyptol and rotary instrumentation with and without eucalyptol . Radiographs were taken in buccolingual and mesiodistal direction. The images were scanned and digitized. The total area of the canal and the area with remaining obturation material were measured in millimeters using computed image analysis system (Image Tool for Windows). Comparisons of the percentages of remaining filling material in the root canal reveal the AH Plus/rotary instrumentation group resulted in a bigger percentage of canal area covered by residual filling material, with a significant difference statistics. The use of eucalyptol not reveals any significant differences between the methods of removal. The bigger time of retreatment were groups polymer castor oil/hand instrumentation with or without eucalyptol. All instruments left remnants of filling material on the root canal walls irrespective of the root filling material used.

Pinyon-juniper (Pinus monophylla – Juniperus osteosperma) woodlands have expanded and infilled over the last 150 years to cover more than 40 million ha in the Great Basin. Many land managers seek to remove Pinyon-juniper trees using a variety of treatments. This thesis looks at six different Pinyon-juniper removal projects in Central and Eastern Nevada. We established a total of 73 vegetation and soil monitoring plots (38 treated, 35 adjacent untreated) across six Pinyon-juniper removal projects in Central and Eastern Nevada to look at the effects of fire, hand thinning, and chaining. The four burns examined together in Chapter 1 had similar elevation, precipitation, and pre-treatment vegetation communities in the untreated areas, but the treated areas had significantly different responses to treatment. With nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS), we found a useful 3-axis ordination of the plots (stress=7.1, R2=.966). Within ordination space, the treated plots were well grouped by parent material. These results informed a Poisson generalized linear model that found parent material factorized explained 86.5% of the deviance in cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) cover at the treated plots. The projects on soils derived from welded tuff had very little cheatgrass while soils derived from limestone or mixed limestone/volcanics were dominated by cheatgrass. Parent material should be considered an important factor when planning Pinyon-juniper removal treatments. Chapter 2 examined the effects of a hand thinning. The hand thinning significantly reduced tree cover [F(1,10) = 7.43, p = 0.027] to less than 2%. Perennial grasses on the site are slightly higher in the treated area. There was a significant increase in perennial grass cover from 2013 to 2014 [F(1,10) = 14.5, p = 0.003]. The hand thinning did not have significant effects on shrubs, annual grasses, annual forbs, perennial forbs, ground cover, stability, species richness, diversity, infiltration, or gap structure. Because hand thinning does not remove the shrubs or other perennials, site resistance can be maintained. With sufficient understory vegetation to maintain resistance post treatment (as in phase I or early phase II Pinyon-juniper woodlands), nonnative annual grasses are less likely to dominate after treatment. Chapter 3 examined the effects of a chaining. The effects of the 40-year old chaining are still significant even though Pinyon-juniper trees are reinvading and make up >5% of the cover in the treated area. The treated areas still have a much more productive understory than adjacent untreated areas. Perennial grass cover, frequency, and density was 2-5 times greater in the chained area. The treated area had fewer large gaps (>100 cm). However, interspace infiltration times were slower in the treatment (t(4)=-2.14, p=0.09). Surface and subsurface soil aggregate stability remained significantly lower in the treatment for vegetation-protected and unprotected samples (t(4)=3.53, p=0.024; t(4)=3.10, p=0.036). Chainings have long-term benefits for vegetation, but also long term impacts on soils and hydrologic ecosystem processes. When planning Pinyon-juniper removal treatments, land managers should consider the plant community, temperature and precipitation regime, and soils at the potential treatment location to better achieve desired outcomes.

Robots should offer a human-like level of dexterity when handling objects if humans are to be replaced in dangerous and uncertain working environments. This level of dexterity for human-like manipulation must come from both the hardware, and the control. Exact replication of human-like degrees of freedom in mobility for anthropomorphic robotic hands are seen in bulky, costly, fully actuated solutions, while machine learning to apply some level of human-like dexterity in underacted solutions is unable to be applied to a various array of objects. This thesis presents experimental and theoretical contributions of a novel neuro-fuzzy control method for dextrous human grasping based on grasp synergies using a Human Computer Interface glove and upgraded haptic-enabled anthropomorphic Ring Ada dexterous robotic hand. Experimental results proved the efficiency of the proposed Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems to grasp objects with high levels of accuracy.

The risk of cross-contamination validated the need to assess the adequacy of cleanliness of dental instruments following decontamination procedures. Neither the extent of single-use nor the efficacy of decontamination of endodontic hand files following routine cleaning and sterilisation procedures in South Africa was known. The first aim of this study was to determine the amount of visible debris left on endodontic hand files collected from dental practice in Pretoria, South Africa, following the application of routine decontamination procedures. Secondly, the study aimed to determine the prevalence and attitudes regarding the single-use of these instruments. Twenty-seven dental practices voluntarily took part in this study. Each participant was requested to submit 15 previously used and decontaminated endodontic hand files. A short questionnaire regarding the single-use of endodontic files was completed by participants. A coding system was used to guarantee the anonymity of the participants. Files were examined for the presence or absence of remnant debris using a stereomicroscope at ten and 40 times magnification. A novel scoring system was used to rate the position of the debris. Statistical evaluation of the data estimated the frequency and proportions of debris on the endodontic hand files, in each scoring position. Cohen’s Kappa statistic was used to assess the repeatability of the scoring system. Four hundred and one endodontic hand files were collected from 27 participants. It was found that 94% of the samples were contaminated with debris. Examiner agreement was found to be fair to moderate over the entire dataset. No participants reported practising the single-use of endodontic hand files. Great variation existed in the way that endodontic hand files were decontaminated. The primary reason provided by participants for the re-use of endodontic hand files was financial concerns regarding single-use protocols.

The phrase ‘de-materialisation of the art object’ has frequently assumed the mistaken role of a universal definition for original conceptual art. My art practice has prompted me to reconsider the history of the term dematerialisation to research another type of conceptual art, one that embraces materiality and incorporates cerebral handmade methods, as evidenced in the practice of the German artist Hanne Darboven. This thesis will establish that materiality and the handmade – the subjective – was embraced by certain original conceptual artists. Furthermore, it argues that within art practices that use concepts, the cerebral handmade can function to prolong the artist’s conceptual deliberation and likewise instigate a nonlinear conscious inquisitiveness in the viewer. My practice-based methodologies for this research involved analogue photography, drawing, an artist residency, exhibition making, publishing, artist talks and interdisciplinary collaborations with various practices of knowledge. The thesis reconsiders the definition of conceptual art through an analysis of the original conceptual art practices initiated in New York City during the 1960s and 1970s that utilised handmade methods. I review and reflect upon the status of the cerebral handmade in conceptual art through a close study of the work of Hanne Darboven, whose work since 1968 has been regularly included in conceptual art exhibitions. I discuss the many contradictions embedded in her practice, and establish how critics and theorists consistently simplified her work by predominately focusing on the conceptual aspects of her art practice. The thesis maps and analyses the historically disregarded fact that Darboven’s practice depended on materiality, as present in both her intensively temporal handmade processes and her methodologies of collecting. To explore the current legacy of this analysis I contextualise contemporary encounters related to fine art practice and conclude with a dialogue, artist-to-artist, with Lucy Skaer.

During several decades considerable research activities have been conducted with respect to fires in coal mines, but the research activities with respect to hard rock mines have been limited. As the hard rock mines are getting more complex the need for deeper understanding of fires in underground hard rock mines are getting more in demand. The more urgent demands are the need for more specific heat release rate curves as design fires, applicable fire experiments and any method that would allow for the calculation of the total heat release rate curve of an object. This thesis presents a number of examples on design fire curves applicable to underground hard rock mines; it also presents the results of model scale fire experiments and methods for calculating the total heat release rate of several objects at uniform as well as non-uniform conditions. Tests were carried out in a model scale tunnel using wooden pallets as fire load. The parameters tested were the distance between piles of pallets and longitudinal ventilation rate. It was found that an increasing ventilation rate also increases the peak heat release rate. When studying the curves of heat release rates it was found that when the distance between the ignited pile and the second pile increased to a certain level the delayed ignition of the second pile will result in that the peak heat release rate of the adjacent piles will not occur simultaneously. The ignition data indicated that the ignition time of adjacent piles decreased as the longitudinal ventilation increased.  A method using a critical heat flux as ignition criterion exhibited very good agreement with the corresponding experiments for both uniform as well as non-uniform conditions. The methods using the ignition temperature as ignition criterion did not agree very well with any of the corresponding experiments.

This thesis interrogates a number of issues that surround what critics have designated ‘film noir’ and its relationship to that branch of modern American literature identified as ‘hard- boiled fiction’. Thus, the main subject matter for the thesis consists of selected films noirs from 1944—46, and the novels of Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, and Raymond Chandler. The thesis argues that the adaptation process is of central significance to the ‘film noir’ debate and to film noir itself. While it argues for a dialogic exchange between ‘noir’ and ‘hard-boiled fiction’, it proposes as well that there was also a fundamental incompatibility between the two modes. The thesis discusses the difficulties encountered by Hollywood studios in adapting Cain’s work due to the candid representation of ‘adult’ themes, and how this conflicted with Hollywood censorship, carried out by the Production Code Administration (PCA). In order for Cain’s fiction to be adapted, it is argued, Hollywood conventions regarding the representation of sex and violence and the PCA guidelines by which they were governed had to undergo radical change. The critical and scholarly contexts for this argument include debates concerning influence, censorship, and the involvement of the PCA with the adaptation process, and the notion, as maintained by elements within the revisionist debate, that ‘film noir’ has no conceptual or theoretical basis. The thesis challenges revisionist arguments that ‘noir’ was ‘invented’ by French critics in 1946, and argues that although the genre was named retrospectively, generic practice was established by Hollywood producers in acts of ‘applied criticism’ prior to production, from around 1944 onwards. The thesis contextualises the generic practice of ‘noir’ within the history of film, while arguing simultaneously for historic changes in Hollywood film-making of the mid-1940s in terms of the representation of ‘adult’ themes, and the relaxation of the Production Code. The thesis discusses how criticism has tended to privilege other media, such as the plastic arts and literature, over film, and argues that notions of artistic style and influence must give consideration to the immanence of the film production context. The notion that ‘noir’ was influenced by the artistic movement known as ‘German Expressionism’ has been questioned by the revisionist debate. The thesis examines and discusses key German films of the Weimar period, when the artistic movement ‘Expressionism’ flourished, arguing that the Weimar influence is discernible in the generic practice of ‘noir’. However, the thesis makes a case that this is, primarily, the legacy of Weimar cinema, and that the influence of ‘Expressionism’ should be discussed within this medium-specific context. The thesis examines the connections between the work of a number of influential directors and the signifying practice of ‘noir’, including Murnau, Lang, Hitchcock and Hawks. It is proposed that certain ‘noir’ conventions can be traced back to the work of these influential directors. The thesis proposes a way of understanding ‘film noir’ as a genre, and argues that the adaptation process needs to be seen as a nexus for various discourses, including directorial style, screenwriting, cinematography, the studio system, and censorship, in addition to the relationship between the film and the novelistic text.

This is a supporting paper for a Master of Arts Graduate Exhibition entitled My Journey Home: A Study in Hand-Felted Wool, held at Slocumb Galleries October 30 through November 3, 2006. The work in the exhibition represents a concentrated study in the graduate program in Fiber Art at East Tennessee State University. My artwork is an expression of my feelings and emotions toward my family, particularly the women in my family. The paper begins with an introduction detailing my artistic research and culminates with a reflection of the work shown in the exhibition. The cultural and historical influences that shaped my family and the influences that developed the fiber construction techniques that I use are then discussed. I explain the methods and procedures I employ to construct my art work and discuss the contemporary artists who have had an influence upon my work and me. In the summary I conclude that the hand-felted wool I construct is an excellent medium to express my ideas and emotions toward my family and my home.

This thesis documents the design and implementation of a game controller glove that employs optical tracking technology to detect movement of the hand and fingers. The vision algorithm captures an image from a webcam in real-time and determines the centroids of colored sections on a glove worn by the player; assigning a distinctive identifier for each section which is associated with a 3D model retrieved from a preexisting library. A Vivitouch artificial muscle module is also mounted to the top of the glove to provide vibratory haptic feedback to the user. The system has been user tested and a number of potential use scenarios have been conceived for integration of the controller in various gaming applications.

This work aims to investigate the effects of current density, electrolyte temperature and substrate composition on the morphology of porous anodic films formed on AA 2024-T3 alloy in sulphuric acid electrolytes and the factors that determine the transition between linear and sponge-like film porosities. Comparisons were made with pure aluminium. Particular attention is given to understanding the rising voltage that occurs during galvanostatic hard anodizing of the alloy and the role of oxygen in the anodizing process. Conditions were selected to be representative of typical hard and conventional anodizing processes. SEM was employed to observe the film morphology, which was then correlated with the voltage-time responses. The anodic film composition was investigated by TEM/EDX and SEM/EDX to determine the effect of alloy element enrichment and cell diameter on the distribution of copper species in the film. A real-time gravimetric method was developed to measure the rate of oxygen evolution during anodizing and its influence on the anodizing voltage and film morphology. Results showed that hard anodic films on AA 2024-T3 alloy formed at relatively high voltages have linear pores and cells, contrasting with sponge-like porosity under conventional anodizing. The linear porosity is shown to depend on the voltage, with a morphological transition occurring in the range 25 to 30 V, with linear cells promoted by a high current density and/or low electrolyte temperature. As the film thickens with time, pore blockage by oxygen bubbles, impedes oxidation of the alloy leading to current re-distribution and hence localized increases in the current density producing a rise of the anodizing voltage as anodizing proceeds. The rise of the anodizing voltage, which leads to an increasing call diameter and barrier layer thickness, has a minor influence on the rate of oxygen evolution, which typically consumes about 20 % of the applied current density. In contrast, the voltage rise in the presence of sponge-like films is comparatively negligible, which is suggested to be due to easier escape of oxygen from the film. The films comprising linear cells contain more copper than the sponge-like films, with copper being enriched at the cell boundaries. Moreover, a model is proposed to explain the enrichment of copper, suggesting that above a critical cell diameter, an alloy enrichment sufficient for oxidation of the alloying element can be maintained across the alloy/film interface. Below this diameter, the enrichment is less than that necessary for oxidation, and the alloying element is then incorporated into the film at the cell boundaries.

This dissertation centres on an examination of Gummo, the provocative directorial debut by filmmaking enfant terrible, Harmony Korine. While largely dismissed by critics who were put off by the film's visceral intensity, unconventional narrative structure and unsentimental depictions of marginality, I want to counter such criticism by arguing that Gummo in fact offers a refreshingly new approach to cinematic representations of white poverty in the United States. While U.S. cinema has often furnished us with representations of poverty, the majority of these ï¬ lms have tended to focus on characters' economic hardships. By contrast, Gummo is almost unique in privileging the cultural and ideological dimensions - concerns with weight and sporting success, attaining and retaining certain norms of masculine strength and appearance, repeated references to celebrity culture, to name but a few examples - while locating such normative dimensions within the bleak material realities that mark life on the breadline. In so doing, Gummo draws attention to the paradoxical cultural question of poverty in the so-called First World: How does one engage with the daily barrage of ideologically imposed social and cultural norms when one's basic living conditions are diametrically opposed to such norms? While most films tend to treat the poor as always outside and in binary opposition to the normative order, I want to propose that we re-think poverty and marginality's cultural identity as always hybrid and in-between the margin and the norm. Such an interstitial position is articulated by Gummo's highlighting of two very different representational approaches: one based on an abject materiality that is often framed in an almost tactile and disconcertingly visceral manner, the other relying on the maintenance of a plastic or surface aesthetic through which symbolic cultural norms and ideals are semiotically conveyed. Rather than seeking to resolve such approaches' contradictions to one another, Gummo gives cinematic expression to the ambivalent position that results when one occupies both spaces simultaneously. This encourages us to think of marginality interstitially, rather than conceiving of it as merely 'other' to what is considered normative or mainstream. In theorising Gummo's representation of white marginality as an interstitial phenomenon, I have drawn primarily on the work of three quite different thinkers: post-colonial theorist Homi K. Bhabha, gender theorist Judith Butler and film theorist Vivian Sobchack. Chapter one engages with Bhabha's ideas about cultural hybridity, seeking to demonstrate how Gummo represents marginality as a decidedly heterogeneous affair, one that blurs all clear notions of centre and margin. Chapter two explores this breaking down of binary value further by investigating how, through subversive acts of re-signification, the norm or centre can become 'contaminated' by the margin. Here I employ Butler's notion of performativity and citation, which demonstrates how norms can be materialised and cited in non-normative circumstances that challenge the validity of the dominant discourse. Such 'non-normative' materialisation blurs the boundary between that which is normative and that which is 'other'. Chapter three expands this notion of re-signiï¬ cation and hybridity still further. Drawing upon the phenomenology-based theory of Vivian Sobchack, I explore those aspects of Korine's film that - like Sobchack's theory - privilege materiality and the body as sites of experience. I then proceed to read Sobchack in relation to Butler and Bhabha, arguing that the manner in which Korine almost tactically frames the harsh, abject materiality of Gummo's setting plays off and meshes with the presence of symbolic norms and ideals. Gummo and its characters are thus ï¬ rmly lodged in a hybrid Third Space; in-between the cultural signs of 'normalcy' and a materialised space of messy abjection. It is between these two seemingly incompatible dimensions that the film and its characters make meaning and forge a sense of cultural identity.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively compare the fill density of MTA produced by hand condensation and hand condensation with indirect ultrasonic activation. Thirty acrylic block with 30 degree curved canals (group C) and 30 with straight canals (group S) were instrumented to a final apical size of 45 of 0.06 taper crown-down technique. After irrigating with water and drying with paper points, each block was weighed to the nearest 0.0001g with a digital electronic balance. In half of the specimens, chosen at random, the canal first filled with MTA using the hand condensation method (H) then weighed. The MTA was removed. The canal was rinsed, dried, and refilled using hand condensation with indirect ultrasonic activation (US). In the other half of the specimens, the procedure was carried out identically but in reverse order. The blocks were weighed again after cleaning the MTA from the canal as well as after refilling the canal using indirect ultrasonic condensation. Data comparing the weight of MTA between the two placement methods and the two canal configurations were analyzed by a two-way ANOVA. There was a statistically significant increase in weight of MTA produced by ultrasonic activation than by hand condensation in groups C (p<.0001) and S (p<.0001). However, there was no statistically significant difference when comparing the straight canal versus the 30-degree curved canal (p = .08). In group C, ultrasonic condensation resulted in a 10.07% increase in the weight of MTA over hand condensation alone. Similarly in group S, there was a 9.1% increase in the weight of MTA over hand condensation. In conclusion, hand condensation with indirect ultrasonic activation resulted in an MTA fill that was denser than that accomplished by hand condensation alone.

Cette thèse présente la conception et la commande d’une main robotique légère et peu onéreuse pour un robot compagnon humanoïde. La main est conçue pour exprimer des émotions à travers des gestes et pour saisir de petits objets légers. Sa géométrie est définie à l’aide de données anthropométriques. Sa cinématique est simplifiée par rapport à la main humaine pour réduire le nombre d’actionneurs tout en respectant ses exigences fonctionnelles. La main préserve son anthropomorphisme grâce aux nombres et au placement de la base des doigts et à une bonne opposabilité du pouce. La mécatronique de la main repose sur un compromis entre des phalanges couplés, qui permettent de bien connaître la posture des doigts pendant les gestes, et des phalanges capable de s’adapter à la forme des objets pendant la saisie, réunis en une conception hybride unique. Ce compromis est rendu possible grâce à deux systèmes d’actionnement distincts placés en parallèle. Leur coexistence est garantie par une transmission compliante basée sur des barres en élastomère. La solution proposée réduit significativement le poids et la taille de la main en utilisant sept actionneurs de faible puissance pour les gestes et un seul moteur puissant pour la saisie. Le système est conçue pour être embarqué sur Romeo, un robot humanoïde de1.4 [m] produit par Aldebaran. Les systèmes d’actionnements sont dimensionnés pour ouvrir et fermer les doigts en moins de 1 [s] et pour saisir une canette pleine de soda. La main est réalisée et contrôlée pour garantir une interaction sûre avec l’homme mais aussi pour protéger l’intégrité de la mécanique. This thesis presents the design and control of a low-cost and lightweight robotic hand for a social humanoid robot. The hand is designed to perform expressive hand gestures and to grasp small and light objects. Its geometry follows anthropometric data. Its kinematics simplifies the human hand structure to reduce the number of actuators while ensuring functional requirements. The hand preserves anthropomorphism by properly placing five fingers on the palm and by ensuring an equilibrated thumb opposability. Its mechanical system results from the compromise between fully-coupled phalanges and self-adaptable fingers in a unique hybrid design. This answers the need for known finger postures while gesturing and for finger adaptation to different object shapes while grasping. The design is based on two distinct actuation systems embodied in parallel within the palm and the fingers. Their coexistence is ensured by a compliant transmission based on elastomer bars. The proposed solution significantly reduces the weightand the size of the hand by using seven low-power actuators for gesturing and a single high-power motor for grasping. The overall system is conceived to be embedded on Romeo, a humanoid robot 1.4 [m] tall produced by Aldebaran. Actuation systems are dimensioned to open and close the fingers in less than1 [s] and to grasp a full soda can. The hand is realized and controlled to ensure safe human-robot interaction and to preserve mechanical integrity. A prototype(ALPHA) is realized to validate the design feasibility and its functional capabilities

This thesis outlines a proposed mechanical design, prototyping and testing of a five fingered artificial hand made of 15 articulated joints actuated by Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) mimicking muscular functions. SMAs Artificial muscles were incorporated in the forearm and artificial tendons made of nylon wires passing through a hollow palm transmit the pulling force to bend the fingers. Torsion springs set in each joint of the fingers create enough restoring force to straighten the finger when the actuators are disengaged. Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) wires were intrinsically embedded within the hand structure allowing significant movements mimicking human hand-like gestures. A control box made of switches connected to the artificial hand helps to control each gesture. A modular approach was taken in the design to facilitate the manufacture and assembly processes. Nickel-Titanium wires were used as actuators to perform the artificial muscle functions by changing their crystallographic structures due to Joule's heating. Rapid prototyping techniques were employed to manufacture the hand in ABS plastic.

The present thesis is about the investigation of ferromagnetic thin film systems with respect to exchange coupling, magnetization reversal behavior and effects appearing in magnetic heterostructures, namely the exchange bias and the giant magnetoresistance effect. For this purpose, DC magnetron sputtered thin films and multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were prepared on single crystalline and rigid as well as flexible amorphous substrates. The first part concentrates on magnetic data storage applications based on the combination of the concept of bit patterned media and three dimensional magnetic memory, consisting of at least two exchange decoupled ferromagnetic storage layers. Here, [Co/Pt] multilayers, revealing different magnetic anisotropies, have been applied as storage layers and as spacer material Pt and Ru was employed. By the characterization of the magnetization reversal behavior the exchange coupling in dependence of the spacer layer thickness was studied. Furthermore, with regard to the concept of bit patterned media, the layers were also grown on self-assembled silica particles, leading to an exchange decoupled single-domain magnetic dot array, which was studied by magnetic force microscope imaging and angular dependent magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry to evaluate the reversal mechanism and its dependence on the array dimensions, mainly the diameter of the silica particles and layer thicknesses. To complete the study, micromagnetic simulations were performed to access smaller dimensions and to investigate the dependence of intralayer as well as interlayer coupling on the magnetization reversal of the dot array with multiple storage layers. The second part focuses on the investigation of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, where L10 -chemically ordered FePt alloys and [Co/Pt] as well as [Co/Pd] multilayers were utilized. In case of FePt, where high temperatures during the deposition are necessary to induce the chemical ordering, diffusion and alloying of the spacer material often prevent a sufficient exchange decoupling of the ferromagnetic layers. However, with Ru as spacer material a giant magnetoresistance effect could be achieved. Large improvements of the magnetoresistive behavior of such trilayer structures are presented for [Co/Pt] and [Co/Pd] multilayers, which can be deposited at room temperature not limiting the choice of spacer as well as substrate material. Furthermore, in systems consisting of one ferromagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and one ferromagnet with in-plane magnetic easy axis, a linear and almost hysteresis-free field dependence of the electrical resistance was observed and the behavior for various thickness series has been intensively studied. Finally, the corrosion resistance in dependence of the capping layer material as well as the magnetoresistance of a strained flexible pseudo-spin-valve structure is presented. In addition, in chapter 2.5.2 an experimental study of an improved crystal growth of FePt at comparable low temperatures by molecular beam epitaxy and further promoted by a surfactant mediated growth using Sb is shown. Auger electron spectroscopy as well as Rutherford backscattering spectrometry were carried out to confirm the surface segregation of Sb and magnetic characterization revealed an increase of magnetic anisotropy in comparison to reference layers without Sb.
Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Untersuchung ferromagnetischer Dünnschichtsysteme im Hinblick auf die Austauchkopplung, das Ummagnetisierungsverhalten und Effekte wie z.B. den Exchange Bias Effekt oder den Riesenmagnetwiderstandseffekt (GMR), welche in derartigen Heterostrukturen auftreten können. Die Probenpräparation erfolgte mittels DC Magnetronsputtern, wobei auf einkristallinen aber auch flexiblen sowie starren amorphen Substraten abgeschieden wurde. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden Untersuchungen mit dem Hintergrund einer Anwendung als magnetischer Datenträger vorgestellt. Konkret werden hier die Konzepte Bit Patterned Media (BPM) und 3D Speicher miteinander kombiniert. Letzteres Konzept basiert auf der Verwendung wenigstens zweier austauschentkoppelter ferromagnetischer Schichten, für welche [Co/Pt] Multilagen mit unterschiedlicher magnetischer Anisotropie verwendet wurden. Als Zwischenschichtmaterial diente Pt und Ru. Durch die Charakterisierung des Ummagnetisierungsverhaltens wurde die Austauschkopplung in Abhängigkeit der Zwischenschichtdicke untersucht. Darüber hinaus wurden jene Schichtstapel zur Realisierung des BPM-Konzeptes auf selbstangeordnete SiO2 Partikel mit unterschiedlichen Durchmessern aufgebracht, durch welche sich lateral austauschentkoppelte, eindomänige magnetische Nanostrukturen erzeugen lassen. Zur Untersuchung des Ummagnetisierungsverhaltens und der jeweiligen Größenabhängigkeiten (maßgeblich Durchmesser und Schichtdicke) wurden diese mittels Magnetkraftmikroskopie sowie winkelabhängiger magnetooptischer Kerr Effekt Magnetometrie untersucht. Zur weiteren Vertiefung des Verständnisses noch kleinerer Strukturgrößen erfolgten mikromagnetische Simulationen, bei denen die magnetischen Wechselwirkungen lateral (benachbarte 3D Elemente) als auch vertikal (Wechselwirkungen ferromagnetischer Schichten innerhalb eines 3D Elementes) im Interesse standen, sowie deren Auswirkungen auf das Ummagnetisierungsverhalten des gesamten Feldes. Der Fokus des zweiten Teils liegt auf der Untersuchung des Riesenmagnetwiderstandseffektes in Systemen mit senkrechter Sensitivität. Dafür sind ferromagnetische Schichten mit senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie nötig, wobei hier die chemisch geordnete L10-Phase der FePt Legierung und [Co/Pt] sowie [Co/Pd] Multilagen Anwendung fanden. Für eine chemische Ordnung der FePt Legierung sind hohe Temperaturen während der Schichtabscheidung notwendig, welche eine hinreichende Austauschentkopplung beider ferromagnetischer Schichten meist nicht gewährleisten. Grund dafür sind einsetzende Diffusionsprozesse als auch Legierungsbildungen mit dem Zwischenschichtmaterial. In der vorliegenden Arbeit konnte der GMR Effekt daher ausschließlich mit einer Ru Zwischenschicht in FePt basierten Trilagensystemen nachgewiesen und charakterisiert werden. Enorme Verbesserungen der magnetoresistiven Eigenschaften werden im Anschluss für [Co/Pt] und vor allem [Co/Pd] Multilagen vorgestellt. Diese Schichtsysteme mit senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie können bei Raumtemperatur präpariert werden und stellen daher keine weiteren Anforderungen an das Zwischenschichtmaterial sowie die verwendeten Substrate. Hier wurden neben Systemen mit ausschließlich senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie auch Systeme mit gekreuzten magnetischen Anisotropien intensiv untersucht, da diese durch einen linearen und weitgehend hysteresefreien R(H) Verlauf imHinblick auf Sensoranwendungen enorme Vorteile bieten. Letztendlich wurde die Korrosionsbeständigkeit in Abhängigkeit des Deckschichtmaterials als auch die mechanische Belastbarkeit von auf flexiblen Substraten abgeschiedenen GMR-Schichtstapeln untersucht. Zusätzlich wird in Kapitel 2.5.2 eine experimentelle Studie zum Surfactant-gesteuerten Wachstum der FePt Legierung mittels Molekularstrahlepitaxie vorgestellt. Als Surfactant dient Sb, wodurch die Kristallinität bei geringer Depositionstemperatur deutlich verbessert werden konnte. Die Oberflächensegregation von Sb wurde mittels Auger Elektronenspektroskopie und Rutherford Rückstreuspektrometrie verifiziert und die Charakterisierung magnetischer Eigenschaften belegt einen Anstieg der magnetischen Anisotropieenergie im Vergleich zu Referenzproben ohne Sb.

The present thesis is about the investigation of ferromagnetic thin film systems with respect to exchange coupling, magnetization reversal behavior and effects appearing in magnetic heterostructures, namely the exchange bias and the giant magnetoresistance effect. For this purpose, DC magnetron sputtered thin films and multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were prepared on single crystalline and rigid as well as flexible amorphous substrates. The first part concentrates on magnetic data storage applications based on the combination of the concept of bit patterned media and three dimensional magnetic memory, consisting of at least two exchange decoupled ferromagnetic storage layers. Here, [Co/Pt] multilayers, revealing different magnetic anisotropies, have been applied as storage layers and as spacer material Pt and Ru was employed. By the characterization of the magnetization reversal behavior the exchange coupling in dependence of the spacer layer thickness was studied. Furthermore, with regard to the concept of bit patterned media, the layers were also grown on self-assembled silica particles, leading to an exchange decoupled single-domain magnetic dot array, which was studied by magnetic force microscope imaging and angular dependent magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry to evaluate the reversal mechanism and its dependence on the array dimensions, mainly the diameter of the silica particles and layer thicknesses. To complete the study, micromagnetic simulations were performed to access smaller dimensions and to investigate the dependence of intralayer as well as interlayer coupling on the magnetization reversal of the dot array with multiple storage layers. The second part focuses on the investigation of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, where L10 -chemically ordered FePt alloys and [Co/Pt] as well as [Co/Pd] multilayers were utilized. In case of FePt, where high temperatures during the deposition are necessary to induce the chemical ordering, diffusion and alloying of the spacer material often prevent a sufficient exchange decoupling of the ferromagnetic layers. However, with Ru as spacer material a giant magnetoresistance effect could be achieved. Large improvements of the magnetoresistive behavior of such trilayer structures are presented for [Co/Pt] and [Co/Pd] multilayers, which can be deposited at room temperature not limiting the choice of spacer as well as substrate material. Furthermore, in systems consisting of one ferromagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and one ferromagnet with in-plane magnetic easy axis, a linear and almost hysteresis-free field dependence of the electrical resistance was observed and the behavior for various thickness series has been intensively studied. Finally, the corrosion resistance in dependence of the capping layer material as well as the magnetoresistance of a strained flexible pseudo-spin-valve structure is presented. In addition, in chapter 2.5.2 an experimental study of an improved crystal growth of FePt at comparable low temperatures by molecular beam epitaxy and further promoted by a surfactant mediated growth using Sb is shown. Auger electron spectroscopy as well as Rutherford backscattering spectrometry were carried out to confirm the surface segregation of Sb and magnetic characterization revealed an increase of magnetic anisotropy in comparison to reference layers without Sb
Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Untersuchung ferromagnetischer Dünnschichtsysteme im Hinblick auf die Austauchkopplung, das Ummagnetisierungsverhalten und Effekte wie z.B. den Exchange Bias Effekt oder den Riesenmagnetwiderstandseffekt (GMR), welche in derartigen Heterostrukturen auftreten können. Die Probenpräparation erfolgte mittels DC Magnetronsputtern, wobei auf einkristallinen aber auch flexiblen sowie starren amorphen Substraten abgeschieden wurde. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden Untersuchungen mit dem Hintergrund einer Anwendung als magnetischer Datenträger vorgestellt. Konkret werden hier die Konzepte Bit Patterned Media (BPM) und 3D Speicher miteinander kombiniert. Letzteres Konzept basiert auf der Verwendung wenigstens zweier austauschentkoppelter ferromagnetischer Schichten, für welche [Co/Pt] Multilagen mit unterschiedlicher magnetischer Anisotropie verwendet wurden. Als Zwischenschichtmaterial diente Pt und Ru. Durch die Charakterisierung des Ummagnetisierungsverhaltens wurde die Austauschkopplung in Abhängigkeit der Zwischenschichtdicke untersucht. Darüber hinaus wurden jene Schichtstapel zur Realisierung des BPM-Konzeptes auf selbstangeordnete SiO2 Partikel mit unterschiedlichen Durchmessern aufgebracht, durch welche sich lateral austauschentkoppelte, eindomänige magnetische Nanostrukturen erzeugen lassen. Zur Untersuchung des Ummagnetisierungsverhaltens und der jeweiligen Größenabhängigkeiten (maßgeblich Durchmesser und Schichtdicke) wurden diese mittels Magnetkraftmikroskopie sowie winkelabhängiger magnetooptischer Kerr Effekt Magnetometrie untersucht. Zur weiteren Vertiefung des Verständnisses noch kleinerer Strukturgrößen erfolgten mikromagnetische Simulationen, bei denen die magnetischen Wechselwirkungen lateral (benachbarte 3D Elemente) als auch vertikal (Wechselwirkungen ferromagnetischer Schichten innerhalb eines 3D Elementes) im Interesse standen, sowie deren Auswirkungen auf das Ummagnetisierungsverhalten des gesamten Feldes. Der Fokus des zweiten Teils liegt auf der Untersuchung des Riesenmagnetwiderstandseffektes in Systemen mit senkrechter Sensitivität. Dafür sind ferromagnetische Schichten mit senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie nötig, wobei hier die chemisch geordnete L10-Phase der FePt Legierung und [Co/Pt] sowie [Co/Pd] Multilagen Anwendung fanden. Für eine chemische Ordnung der FePt Legierung sind hohe Temperaturen während der Schichtabscheidung notwendig, welche eine hinreichende Austauschentkopplung beider ferromagnetischer Schichten meist nicht gewährleisten. Grund dafür sind einsetzende Diffusionsprozesse als auch Legierungsbildungen mit dem Zwischenschichtmaterial. In der vorliegenden Arbeit konnte der GMR Effekt daher ausschließlich mit einer Ru Zwischenschicht in FePt basierten Trilagensystemen nachgewiesen und charakterisiert werden. Enorme Verbesserungen der magnetoresistiven Eigenschaften werden im Anschluss für [Co/Pt] und vor allem [Co/Pd] Multilagen vorgestellt. Diese Schichtsysteme mit senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie können bei Raumtemperatur präpariert werden und stellen daher keine weiteren Anforderungen an das Zwischenschichtmaterial sowie die verwendeten Substrate. Hier wurden neben Systemen mit ausschließlich senkrechter magnetischer Anisotropie auch Systeme mit gekreuzten magnetischen Anisotropien intensiv untersucht, da diese durch einen linearen und weitgehend hysteresefreien R(H) Verlauf imHinblick auf Sensoranwendungen enorme Vorteile bieten. Letztendlich wurde die Korrosionsbeständigkeit in Abhängigkeit des Deckschichtmaterials als auch die mechanische Belastbarkeit von auf flexiblen Substraten abgeschiedenen GMR-Schichtstapeln untersucht. Zusätzlich wird in Kapitel 2.5.2 eine experimentelle Studie zum Surfactant-gesteuerten Wachstum der FePt Legierung mittels Molekularstrahlepitaxie vorgestellt. Als Surfactant dient Sb, wodurch die Kristallinität bei geringer Depositionstemperatur deutlich verbessert werden konnte. Die Oberflächensegregation von Sb wurde mittels Auger Elektronenspektroskopie und Rutherford Rückstreuspektrometrie verifiziert und die Charakterisierung magnetischer Eigenschaften belegt einen Anstieg der magnetischen Anisotropieenergie im Vergleich zu Referenzproben ohne Sb

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive disease, often leading to disability. Because the disease course develops rapidly during the first years after diagnosis, more knowledge is needed about the early disease course to minimize later disability. This thesis describes the course of disability in early RA such as hand function, pain intensity, activity limitation and sick leave. In addition, this thesis compares disability between women and men and compares disability between RA patients and referents. This thesis is primarily based on data from the 320 patients that were included in the multi-centre project in Sweden called ‘Early interventions in rheumatoid arthritis’ (TIRA). A wide range of outcome variables was registered between 1996 and 2006 during regular follow-ups from time for diagnosis through the eight-year follow-up. Outcome regarding disease activity and disability of RA patients still remaining in TIRA at the three and five year follow-up respectively are used in this thesis. Data concerning sick leave were obtained for the patients during six years (1993-2001) – three years before and three years after diagnosis. Referents were included in two of the studies. Data regarding disability in referents were obtained according to hand function and activity limitation using the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Data for sick leave were obtained for six years in referents, for the same period as the RA patients. For most variables, disability in RA was most pronounced at time of diagnosis but before intervention started. Disability was then reduced already at the 3-month follow-up and thereafter affected but stable during the following five years. The exception was participation, reflected by sick leave, a variable that was stable from inclusion to three years from diagnosis. Activity limitation, pain intensity and sick leave in RA that represents different aspects of disability were explained by other aspects of disability and contextual factors rather than by disease activity. RA affects women and men differently in some aspects. Women had more severe course of activity limitations than men according to HAQ. Men were more affected than women in range of motion, although the differences were small in a clinical perspective. However, pain intensity and frequency of sick leave did not differ between women and men. Patients with RA have pronounced disability in relation to referents although several variables improve soon after diagnosis. This discrepancy refers to hand function as well as activity limitations and sick leave. The frequency of sick leave increased during the year before diagnosis in relation to referents and was thereafter high compared to sick leave in referents.

Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of two glide path preparation methods on the fracture rate of the Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument. The number of simulator Endo-Training-Blocks in each group were calculated at the time of instrument fracture and compared to determine the influence of glide path preparation on the failure rate of the Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument. Preparation times for different glide path methods and total time for root canal preparation, with or without glide path, was also calculated. Materials and Methods: Simulator Endo-Training-Blocks (n = 300) were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 100). The 3 groups were then sub-divided into 5 smaller groups (n = 20). Root canal preparation was done with new primary 25/08 WaveOne instruments allocated to each group (5 in total for each group, 1 for each sub-group) following different methods for glide path preparation. Group 1: no glide path (control); Group 2: glide path preparation with stainless-steel hand files (size 10 K-File followed by size 15 K-File and finally size 20 K-File until loose fitting); and Group 3: glide path preparation with rotary PathFiles (size 10 K-File until loose fitting followed by PathFile no.1 (ISO 13 tip), PathFile no.2 (ISO 16 tip) and finally PathFile no. 3 (ISO 19 tip)). The Primary 25/08 WaveOne reciprocating instrument was used with the WaveOne endodontic motor in “WaveOne All “mode with a brushing motion on the outstroke. Simulated root canals were irrigated with sterile water and Glyde was used as lubricating agent. The outcome was measured by recording how many simulators could be prepared with one instrument before instrument breakage occurred. The preparation protocol was repeated 5 times. The time it took to prepare the glide path and the total preparation time was also calculated. The data of the different parts of the project were collected and statistically analysed using the ANOVA / Bonferroni test. Results: Glide path preparation with PathFiles was significantly faster (13.3 s ± 2.60 s) than with hand files (25.1 s ± 1.70 s) (P < 0.001). The highest number of simulators could be prepared after glide path preparation was performed with PathFiles (19.2 ± 0.84) (P < 0.001). Pairwise comparisons at the Bonferroni adjusted significance level of 0.017 demonstrated that there were statistical significant differences (P < 0.001) when PathFiles (19.2 ± 0.84) and hand files (17.6 ±1.14) were compared to the no glide path group (7.4 ± 0.89). There was no statistical significant difference between PathFiles and hand files groups. Total Preparation time was significantly shorter (P < 0.001) when an initial glide path was prepared with PathFiles (12.7 ± 0.22 s). The longest preparation time (P < 0.001) was calculated in group 1 where no glide path (21.2 ± 0.20 s) was present and the Endo-Training-Blocks were left undisturbed. Conclusion: Initial glide path preparation with PathFiles resulted in shorter preparation time (glide path and total preparation) and allowed a higher number of simulators prepared before failure of the WaveOne instrument.

Hard ceramic films of micrometric thickness deposited on a soft metallic substrate have ushered in a new era in the fabrication of structural, tribological, microelectronic and optical components. The mechanical performance of these components is however critically dependent on the strength and toughness of these films as well as on those of the film-substrate interface. Recent studies have shown that cylindrical and radial cracks can propagate through the film during nanoindentation tests with spherically tipped and pointed indenters, resulting in steps in the load versus displacement curve. In this thesis, the mechanics of fracture of thin hard films bonded to soft substrates, during nanoindentation is studied by carrying out finite element analyses. The role of plastic yielding in the substrate on the above issue is examined. Another important objective of this work is to propose a method by which finite element simulations can be employed to interpret nanoindentation test results and yield information related to the fracture behaviour of hard films. To this end, axisymmetric finite element analyses of spherical nanoindentation of a TiN film of thickness t = 1 //m, on a steel substrate are carried out. Numerical algorithms for large deformation, contact simulation and computation of energy release rate are employed in the analyses. The film is assumed to be linear elastic, whereas, an elastic-plastic constitutive model is used for the substrate. A nanoindentation analysis of the uncracked film is first carried out. The development of plastic yielding in the substrate and its influence on the load P versus penetration h characteristics is examined. The stress fields around the indenter for different depths of indentation are studied. The results show that the radial stress attains a tensile peak at the film surface, just outside the indented zone. However, it becomes compressive with increasing distance below the surface. Interestingly, a tensile radial stress prevails at the film-substrate interface at large indentation depth. The shear stress increases to a peak value at a distance of 0.052 to OAt below the film surface depending upon the radial location and then reduces. Next, circumferential cracks extending downwards from the film surface are introduced at different radial distances R from the axis of symmetry. Finite element analyses are carried out till the indented zone extends almost up to the crack surface. The energy release rate J is computed as a function of indentation depth for different crack lengths c (in the range from O.lt to 0.9t). The results show that shallow cracks are essentially under Mode II loading with closure of crack faces caused by compressive radial stresses. However, a mixed-mode state prevails if the crack length is large (c > 0.62), with crack faces opening out due to tensile radial stress near the film-substrate interface. The variation of J with c/t for cracks located at different radial distances R is examined. It is found that for small R, there is a decreasing branch in the J versus c variation between c = 0.2i to 0.75£ which indicates that crack extension in this range will be stable. On the other hand, for large R, J increases monotonically with c/t which implies that unstable fracture of the full film thickness will occur following crack initiation. A composite nomogram is generated in the P — h plane where constant J lines are plotted along with load-displacement curves for different crack lengths. If now a nanoindentation (experimental) load-displacement behaviour is superimposed on this nomogram, the initial crack length (of a pre-existing flaw), the final crack length and fracture energy of the film can be inferred. In the last part of the thesis, the effect of the substrate yield strength on the indentation mechanics is studied. It is found that upon decreasing the yield strength, the load at a given indentation depth decreases while the residual depth at unloading increases. Also, the energy release rate for a given radial location and crack length reduces considerably at large depths of indentation.

Da industrien for alvor grep tak i Norge rundt 1870 fikk skipsfarten vind i seilene. Blant de største eksportvarene var trevirke, der mengder av tremasse ble fraktet til England for bruk i papirindustrien.2 Skipsfarten var essensiell for å kunne opprettholde handel mellom landene, og for å kunne holde produksjonen av varer i gang. I perioden mellom 1820 – 1880 økte Norges handelsflåte fra 284 000 nettotonn til hele 1,5 millioner nettotonn. I spissen for skipsfartsveksten var blant annet vestlandsbyene Bergen og Stavanger.3Haugesund, som er lokalisert midt imellom Bergen og Stavanger, ble grunnlagt på fiske- og sjøfartsnæringene. Byen ligger vest i havgapet, og er kjent for sin sterke tilknytning til sildefisket. I moderne tid har næringsgrunnlaget utviklet seg til å også å gjelde industri og skipsfart, og byen har fostret mange suksessrike rederivirksomheter.4 Et av rederiene som skiller seg ut i mengden av næringsdrivende fra tidlig 1900-tall, er Brummenæs & Torgersen rederi. På en auksjon 1909 kjøper de to kvinnene ved navn Hanna Brummenæs og Bertha Torgersen dampskipet D/S «Goval», og med dette starter de landets, om ikke verdens, første kvinnelige rederi. Kvinnene gjorde stor suksess som forretningsdrivende, og var på et tidspunkt det femte største rederiet i Haugesund. Men, hvordan oppfattet samfunnet i Haugesund de kvinnelige rederne? Jamstiltes de mannlige redere fra samme periode? Denne oppgaven undersøker hvordan ettermælet til fire redere er utformet. Spilte kjønn noen rolle for hvordan de framstiltes etter sin død, eller var det prestasjonene personene stod for i livet som var det viktigste?
