Streszczenie:
Volatile compounds have a tremendous impact on fruit quality. We evaluated the volatile compound profiles of ripening wild apple fruit (10 Malus baccata accessions and three Malus prunifolia accessions) in the National Field Genebank for Hardy Fruits at Gongzhuling, China. Alcohols, esters, aldehydes, terpenes, hydrocarbons, ethers, heterocycles, carboxylic acids, and ketones were detected in the M. baccata and M. prunifolia fruit, with the first four being the main volatile compounds present. Of the 92 volatiles detected, esters were the most diverse (49 compounds). This wide range of abundant volatile compounds suggests that M. prunifolia is a good resource for breeding apple cultivars with novel and interesting flavors. The M. baccata accession ‘Zhaai Shandingzi’ and the M. prunifolia accession ‘Bai Haitang’ had the widest range of volatile compounds and the highest volatile compound contents of the accessions examined, and will therefore be good breeding materials for developing commercial lines with enhanced flavor and for widening the genetic diversity. The number of different ester compounds present was significantly positively correlated (r = 0.877) with the cube root of the weight of an individual ripe fruit. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the contents of ester compounds could be used to distinguish between M. baccata and M. prunifolia species. Therefore, ester compounds could be used as a reference of parental choice in apple breeding.

Island ecosystems have distinct and unique vulnerabilities that place them at risk from threats to their ecology and socioeconomics. Spatially exhibiting the fragmentation process of island landscapes and identifying their driving factors are the fundamental prerequisites for the maintenance of island ecosystems and the rational utilization of islands. Haitan Island was chosen as a case study for understanding landscape fragmentation on urbanizing Islands. Based on remote sensing technology, three Landsat images from 2000 to 2020, landscape pattern index, transect gradient analysis, and moving window method were used in this study. The results showed that from 2000 to 2020, impervious land increased by 462.57%. In 2000, the predominant landscape was cropland (46.34%), which shifted to impervious land (35.20%) and forest (32.90%) in 2020. Combining the moving window method and Semivariogram, 1050 m was considered to be the best scale to reflect the landscape fragmentation of Haitan Island. Under this scale, it was found that the landscape fragmentation of Haitan Island generally increased with time and had obvious spatial heterogeneity. We set up sampling bands along the coastline and found that the degree of landscape fragmentation, advancing from the coast inland, was decreasing. Transects analysis showed the fragmentation intensity of the coastal zone: the north-western and southern wooded zones decreased, while the concentration of urban farmland in the north-central and southern areas increased. The implementation of a comprehensive experimental area plan on Haitan Island has disturbed the landscape considerably. In 2000, landscape fragmentation was mainly influenced by topography and agricultural production. The critical infrastructure construction, reclamation and development of landscape resources have greatly contributed to the urbanisation and tourism of Haitan Island, and landscape fragmentation in 2013 was at its highest. Due to China’s “Grain for Green Project” and the Comprehensive Territorial Spatial Planning policy (especially the protection of ecological control lines), the fragmentation of Haitan Island was slowing. This study investigated the optimal spatial scale for analyzing spatiotemporal changes in landscape fragmentation on Haitan Island from 2000 to 2020, and the essential influencing factors in urban islands from the perspective of natural environment and social development, which could provide a basis for land use management and ecological planning on the island.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti experienced one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in recent history. In terms of fatalities, only the Bangladesh cyclone of 1970 and the Tangshan earthquake of 1976 in China surpassed the Haitian tragedy. This article argues that geography and geology sparked the Haitian earthquake, but the extent of the destruction was due to the massive failure of Haitian institutions, in particular the state, and international policy, which predated the earthquake. In sum, the Haitian tragedy combined the fury of Nature and the ineptitude of “Man.” The article demonstrates the logic, mechanisms, and consequences of institutional failure. Furthermore, it deems Haitian state building an existential imperative and suggests a road map to its achievement.

Streszczenie:
The assessment of habitat quality is instrumental in preserving regional species diversity and ecosystem health, thereby forming the theoretical foundation for sustainable urban development. While the Invest model is a commonly employed tool for habitat quality evaluation, it fails to consider the terrain. This study, centered on Haitan Island, introduces the terrain diversity index to rectify the Invest model’s lack of terrain evaluation. The terrain diversity index, encompassing indices for terrain slope, undulation, and humidity, combined with the Invest model, was applied for a comprehensive assessment of the study area’s habitat quality. Furthermore, the distribution characteristics of habitat quality on Haitan Island, China, were examined using Moran’s I and LISA indices. The research indicates that forest land is the primary land cover type on Haitan Island, with blue-green space comprising forests, farmland, water bodies, and grassland, making up 66.8% of the island’s area, thus implying a positive overall ecological base. Habitat quality distribution within the study area displays spatial heterogeneity, with regions of superior habitat quality primarily found in the northeast areas such as Junshan. Compared to the standalone Invest model, the combined method considering terrain and vegetation cover types yields a more sensitive impact on habitat quality evaluation and improves the precision of identifying superior habitat quality by 56.7%. Spatial autocorrelation analysis revealed that the comprehensive habitat quality index in the study area exhibited clustered distribution. Hotspots were mainly identified in areas like Junshan and the western mangrove wetland, regions with a high concentration of habitat quality values, while low-value clusters were mostly found in the central city and southwestern plains. This study offers a novel methodology for habitat quality evaluation, compensating for the traditional Invest model’s neglect of terrain factors, and enriching the research on island habitat quality. It can provide fresh approaches and references for future habitat-related studies.

Island ecosystems are particularly susceptible to climate change and human activities. The change of land use and land cover (LULC) has considerable impacts on island ecosystems, and there is a critical need for a free and open-source tool for detecting land cover fluctuations and spatial distribution. This study used Google Earth Engine (GEE) to explore land cover classification and the spatial pattern of major land cover change from 1990 to 2019 on Haitan Island, China. The land cover classification was performed using multiple spectral bands (RGB, NIR, SWIR), vegetation indices (NDVI, NDBI, MNDWI), and tasseled cap transformation of Landsat images based on the random forest supervised algorithm. The major land cover conversion processes (transfer to and from) between 1990 and 2019 were analyzed in detail for the years of 1990, 2000, 2007, and 2019, and the overall accuracies ranged from 88.43% to 91.08%, while the Kappa coefficients varied from 0.86 to 0.90. During 1990–2019, other land, cultivated land, sandy land, and water area decreased by 30.70%, 13.63%, 3.76%, and 0.95%, respectively, while forest and built-up land increased by 30.94% and 16.20% of the study area, respectively. The predominant land cover was other land (34.49%) and cultivated land (26.80%) in 1990, which transitioned to forest land (53.57%) and built-up land (23.07%) in 2019. Reforestation, cultivated land reduction, and built-up land expansion were the major land cover change processes on Haitan Island. The spatial pattern of forest, cultivated land, and built-up land change is mainly explained by the implementation of a ‘Grain for Green Project’ and ‘Comprehensive Pilot Zone’ policy on Haitan Island. Policy and human activities are the major drivers for land use change, including reforestation, population growth, and economic development. This study is unique because it demonstrates the use of GEE for continuous monitoring of the impact of reforestation efforts and urbanization in an island environment.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Disney and other United States-based companies found themselves in the position to create a “new world order.” The National Labor Committee (NLC), Haitian grassroots labor organizers, a multimillion member international labor community, concerned shareholders, members of the U.S. Congress, and activists around the world pressured Disney to lead the way to a new global standard by paying a living wage and investing in local infrastructure wherever it did business. Whatever standards Disney enacted, they argued, the rest would follow. Rather than assume the “corporate mantle of responsibility,” Disney ran from the United States to Haiti, then to China, in search of cheap labor, a bigger profit margin, and the ability to do business without scrutiny. Seeing itself as just one entity in a global garment supply chain, Disney claimed responsibility only for licensing its brand to the contractors (U.S.-based) and subcontractors (in Haiti and later China) who handled the actual production of Disney merchandise.

Global climate change and ecological environment destruction have become global problems that cannot be ignored. As the largest developing country, China faces the reality of emission reduction from the international community and the pressure of domestic environmental protection. Based on the policy process of carbon peak and carbon neutrality in China, the allocation and use of carbon peak policy tools in China are analyzed by using the Multiple-Streams Approach, and some insights are proposed, hoping to provide some thinking for related research. The initiation of China’s carbon peak and carbon neutrality policy agenda is inseparable from concerns about Problem Streams, discussions on policy streams, and the promotion of Political Streams, as well as the help of policy entrepreneurs. In the future, in the process of continuously promoting carbon peaking and carbon neutrality policies, China should be problem-oriented, continuously optimize policy guidelines, continue to deepen the political environment and promote comprehensive green transformation and sustainable economic and social development with "Double carbon" policies. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a supply chain management framework covering different business environment levels, that is, macro, micro and supply chain levels, and also to evaluate Haiti vs China as apparel-sourcing partners by assessing macro-level, supply-chain-level and micro-level environments from the US apparel buyers’ perspective. Design/methodology/approach In order to achieve this, first, a framework covering these business environment levels was developed and tested through path analysis. Prior to path analysis exploratory factor analysis was conducted to verify proposed factor structures. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews with a sample of 41 apparel companies that operate in the USA and source from China and Haiti. Findings This study found that both supply-chain-level and micro-level environments positively impact global supply chain performance. Supply-chain-level also has a direct effect on micro-level environment and macro-level environment has only a direct effect on supply-chain-level environment. Interviews and discussions based on this framework indicate that Haiti’s proximity to the USA, price, low-wage rates, small-order sourcing opportunities and good basic sewing skills are among Haiti’s strengths. Originality/value This study is unique in developing a multi-level environment framework for supply chain management and in comparing Haiti and China in terms of their supply chains to evaluate the potential competitiveness of Haitian apparel supply chain.

This study centers on forecasting return and constructing proper portfolios with 5 typical assets rarely focused on the Chinese A-share market. This paper applies the fittest ARIMA models for each of the selected stocks to predict their trend of returns in the next 20 days. Besides, we create the efficient frontier by Monte Carlo simulation under Markowitz’s Mean-Variance framework to focus on two portfolios, i.e., the maximum Sharpe ratio portfolio and the minimum volatility portfolio. The empirical results of the ARIMA model indicate a rational prediction of return for assets in the A-share market. The maximum Sharpe ratio portfolio and the minimum volatility portfolio show that stock of Foshan Haitian Flavouring and Food Company Ltd. and stock of China Merchants Bank Co., Ltd. account for the largest proportion in the two portfolios. Further empirical results show that returns for two portfolios are higher than the market index return, which illuminates the two portfolios outperform the market index. The results in this paper will surely benefit related investors in the financial market.

Streszczenie:
The investigation of taxonomic diversity within island plant communities stands as a central focus in the field of island biogeography. Phylogenetic diversity is crucial for unraveling the evolutionary history, ecological functions, and species combinations within island plant communities. Island effects (area and isolation effect) may shape species distribution patterns, habitat heterogeneity affects habitat diversity, and anthropogenic disturbances can lead to species extinction and habitat destruction, thus impacting both species diversity and phylogenetic diversity. To investigate how taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity in island natural plant communities respond to island effects, habitat heterogeneity, and anthropogenic disturbances, we took the main island of Haitan (a land-bridge island) and nine surrounding islands (oceanic islands) of varying sizes as the subjects of our study on the Pingtan islands. We aim to elucidate the influence of island effects, habitat heterogeneity, and anthropogenic disturbances on taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. The results showed that, (1) Both the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of plants on the Pingtan islands followed the island area effect, indicating that as the island area increases, both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity also increase. (2) Island effects and habitat heterogeneity were found to enhance taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity, whereas anthropogenic disturbances were associated with a decrease in both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. Furthermore, the synergistic influence of island effects, habitat heterogeneity, and anthropogenic disturbances collectively exerted a negative impact on both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. (3) The contribution of explanatory variables of anthropogenic disturbances for taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity was higher than that of island effects and habitat heterogeneity. Additionally, the contribution of the explanatory variables under the combined influence of island effects, habitat heterogeneity, and anthropogenic disturbances is higher than that of the individual variables for island effects and habitat heterogeneity. These findings suggest that anthropogenic disturbances emerged as the dominant factors influencing both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. These findings demonstrate the intricate interplay between island effects, habitat heterogeneity, and anthropogenic disturbances, highlighting their combined influence on both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity on island.

Ideals and convictions are the beacon. General Secretary Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the fifth group study session held by the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, stressing that “it is necessary to use the thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era to cultivate soul and educate people, strengthen education about core socialist values, as well as guide students to develop firm ideals and convictions, follow the instructions and path of the Party, and devote themselves to the nation and the people” (Li Haitao, 2013). Persistent hard work of new generations is required to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Only when the young generation has ideals and a sense of responsibility can the Chinese nation be promising. Based on the cultural wisdom from Tao Te Ching, the paper discusses the guiding significance of the philosophy in Tao Te Ching to college ideological and political work in the new era in terms of the cognitive education, emotional education and will education of ideals and convictions.

In its award of 15 July 2009 the Florida Court of Appeal (Third District) ruled that Florida Courts had jurisdiction over a parent company (HELM), but not over its Dutch subsidiary company (Vos) that had caused severe damage in Haiti. Vos had purchased glycerine from China and, although the glycerine was impure and tainted, it had proceeded to sell the glycerine to one of its customers in Haiti after affixing false labels to it. In its judgment of 2 July 2015, the Circuit Court of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in and for Miami-Dade County declined to pierce the corporate veil under Dutch law and to hold HELM liable for the ‘despicable’ alleged actions of its subsidiary. In March 2016 an appeal has been lodged against the Court’s award with the Florida Court of Appeal (Third District).

Megacrystalline uraninite (up to one centimeter in size) represents one of the most important discoveries in uranium mineralogy in the western margin of the Yangtze Block and even in China in recent years. However, the genesis of megacrystalline uraninite remains controversial. In this study, the megacrystalline uraninite found in the felsic and quartz veins in the Haita area is examined for the first time. The study examined the geochemical characteristics of uraninite in the two veins and resulted in two primary findings. (1) The genesis of the uraninite was likely intrusive and was closely related to partial melting. (2) The quartz vein and feldspar vein are cogenetic and have a simple differentiation evolution relationship. Therefore, the partial melting of felsic materials during migmatization may be the most important mechanism of uranium mineralization in the study area. Furthermore, further simple fractional crystallization may be another important mechanism for the formation of megacrystalline uraninite. This study enriches the REE database of uraninite in uranium deposits worldwide, which is meaningful for studying the genesis of megacrystalline uraninite.

Streszczenie:
To suppress the influence of rainfall when extracting sea surface wind and wave parameters using X-band marine radar and control the quality of the collected radar image, it is necessary to detect whether the radar image is contaminated by rainfall. Since the detection accuracy of the statistical characteristics methods (e.g., the zero pixel percentage method and the high-clutter direction method) is limited and the threshold is difficult to determine, the machine learning methods (e.g., the support vector machine-based method and the neural network algorithm) are difficult to select appropriate quality and quantity of data for model training. Therefore, based on the feature that rainfall can change the sea surface texture, a wave texture difference method for rainfall detection is proposed in this paper. Considering the spatial rainfall is uneven, the polar coordinates of the radar image are converted into Cartesian coordinates to detect rainfall. To express the maximum wave difference more accurately, the calculation method of the pixels in the radar texture difference map is redefined. Then, a consecutive pixel method is used to detect the calculated radar texture difference map, and this method can detect adaptively with the change of wind. The data collected from the shore of Haitan Island along the East China Sea are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the zero pixel percentage method and the support vector machine-based method, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has better rainfall detection performance. In addition, the research on the applicability of the proposed method shows that the wave texture difference method can finish the task of rainfall detection in most marine environments.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Purpose: To examine the incidence and frequency of neurological complications secondary to intrathecal chemotherapy. Introduction: Intrathecal (IT) chemotherapeutic agents have a narrow therapeutic index and high potential for toxicity. Though severe side effects are considered rare, consequences of IT chemotherapy administration can be catastrophic. The most common neurotoxic side effect is chemical arachnoiditis, manifesting typically as headache and/or fever, but more severe symptoms have also been reported including paraplegia, cranial nerve palsies, and seizures. The true incidence of neurological complications is not well quantified, and many cases of toxicity may go unrecognized or unreported. Here we detail neurologic complications of IT chemotherapy in adult patients over a two-year time period at our institution. Patients and Methods: Sixty-three patients received IT chemotherapy between January 2014 and December 2015 at Jackson Memorial Hospital and were included in this analysis. We cataloged all neurological complications within four days of IT chemotherapy. We defined minor neurological complications as headache, backache, nuchal rigidity, fever, nausea, or vomiting. Major neurological complications were defined as paresthesia, cranial nerve palsy, paralysis, or asthenia. For each administration of IT chemotherapy we recorded the type and dose of chemotherapy, and results of associated CSF cytology and flow cytometry. Results: Of the 63 patients who received IT chemotherapy treatment, 44 (70%) were male. 20 (32%) patients identified as non-Hispanic, 41 (65%) identified as Hispanic, and 2 (3%) identified as Haitian. The average age at time of treatment was 47.87 years (median: 49, range 22-72). 14 (22%) of patients were HIV positive. At time of IT chemotherapy treatment, 18 (29%) patients had known malignancy present in the CNS. Of the 208 recorded administrations of IT chemotherapy, 197 (95%) included methotrexate and 122 (59%) included cytarabine. The incidence of major neurologic adverse events for all patients receiving IT chemotherapy was 6.8%. The rate of major events was 9.2% for methotrexate with or without hydrocortisone, 9.1% for cytarabine with or without hydrocortisone, and 5.4% for methotrexate and cytarabine combined with or without hydrocortisone. There was no statistically significant difference in rate of major events when the three drug combinations were compared (p=0.562). The rate of minor neurologic events was 38.3% for all cases of patients receiving IT chemotherapy, 42.4% for methotrexate with or without hydrocortisone, 36.4% for cytarabine with or without hydrocortisone, and 35.5% for methotrexate and cytarabine combined with or without hydrocortisone. There was no statistically significant difference in rate of minor events when comparing the three different drug combinations (p=0.604). The adverse events encountered most frequently were headache (15.9%), nausea (13.6%), vomiting (9.6%), back pain (5.8%), and fever (5.8%). The most frequent major adverse events were asthenia (4.3%) and paresthesia (3.8%). Discussion and Conclusion: More than one third of all IT chemotherapy administration events resulted in at least one minor side effect, with roughly 7% resulting in at least one major effect. Headache, nausea, vomiting, back pain, and fever were the most common events encountered-all of which are common sequelae of chemical arachnoiditis. In the cases of major neurologic events we considered potential contamination of the IT methotrexate. Though never confirmed at our institution, Zeng et. al. (J Clin Oncol, 2011) investigated the development of paraplegia amongst patients who received IT methotrexate, discovering trace amounts of vincristine that contaminated intrathecal drugs produced by a manufacturing plant in China causing a large outbreak of severe neurological damage. Murata et al. (J Med Case Rep, 2015) reported a case of demyelination secondary to myelopathy attributed to an IT methotrexate dose. Outbreaks of severe adverse reactions to IT chemotherapy, especially when temporally related, should prompt suspicion of potential chemotherapy contamination. It is important for clinicians to be aware of the adverse events described in this study and consider them seriously when treating patients with IT chemotherapy. * Byrnes D, Dermarkarian C, and Kahn R contributed equally to this work Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

AbstractSubmesoscale process is an important part in the kinetic energy cascade from large‐scale circulation to turbulent dissipation, and a key component of the global heat budget. Its dynamic response to weather event is an important process in forecasting marine bio‐chemical matter transport. So how will submesoscale instabilities response to tropical cyclones (TCs) is worth studying. Based on underwater glider observations and 1‐km high resolution numerical modeling, we investigated two TCs (Roke and Haitang)‐induced submesoscale baroclinic instabilities and their dynamic mechanisms in the Northern South China Sea. The TC Haitang induced significant surface cooling, mixed layer deepening, front sharpening, and enhanced the mixed layer baroclinic and symmetric instabilities. The submesoscale kinetic energy also enhanced sharply after TC Haitang, which was higher correlated with increased mesoscale strain rates. The submesoscale energetics analysis revealed that the enhanced frontal submesoscale kinetic energy after TC Haitang was mainly from potential energy release via baroclinic energy conversion. Four groups of sensitivity numerical experiments revealed that the turbulent heat buoyancy flux and the Ekman buoyancy flux contributed equally to the positive baroclinic energy conversion during the TC Haitang. This study helps us to understand the multiscale oceanic energy transfers and submesoscale air‐sea interaction processes.

Wuzhizhou Island (WZZ) is located in Haitang Bay in the northern region of Sanya, Hainan Island. The sea area surrounding WZZ represents a typical tropical marine ecosystem, characterised by diverse and complex habitats. Therefore, there is a rich variety of marine fish species at WZZ. The marine ecosystem of WZZ was seriously destroyed initially in the 1970s-1980s and recovered in the 1990s, then constructed as the first national tropical marine ranch demonstration area of China in 2019. As fish is an important high trophic vertebrate in the marine ecosystem, understanding the composition and distribution of fish species could help us to recognise the status of the ecosystem of WZZ and supply scientific data for construction of the national marine ranch demonstration area. This study used eDNA technology to investigate the composition of fish community surrounding WZZ and provided a scientific basis for realising and protecting the marine ecosystem of the South China Sea. The WZZ is an offshore island in the South China Sea, harbouring abundant marine fish resources. Although previous research investigated fish species of WZZ, the data were, however, still incomplete due to limitation of sampling methods and survey seasons. In this study, we intended to take advantage of eDNA and supplement data of fish species at WZZ as much as possible. Based on eDNA, this study provided the data on 188 fish species (including nine undetermined species denoted by genus sp.) belonging to 17 orders, 63 families and 124 genera and they were the more comprehensive records of fish species surrounding WZZ. In addition, the information on Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units (MOTUs) for taxon identification was also provided, aiming to contribute to the establishment of a specific eDNA taxon database for fish of the South China Sea. This study included two datasets, which were occurrences of fish taxa at WZZ, as well as MOTUs sequences and geographical coordinate information of sampling sites. The “fish taxon occurrences” dataset presented records on taxonomic, distribution and habitat conditions of 188 fish species detected using eDNA, as well as the latitude and longitude information of the sampling sites, the "MOTUs information" dataset provided the MOTUs sequences, source of sequences, abundance of sequences for 188 fish species, also included the species matched in NCBI and the best NCBI BLAST sequence similarity.

ABSTRACTSoutheastern China's coastal region is considered one of the key areas for studying prehistoric human–land relationships in the Western Pacific region. This region, which is rich in records of marine civilization, provides an ideal location for recording coastal environmental evolution. In this study, the chronological framework of three borehole cores recovered from Haitan Island, South China, near the Keqiutou group of sites, was established using both optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) dating techniques. Various analyses, including lithologic characteristics, chroma, clay–water electric conductivity (EC), grain size and elemental geochemistry, were conducted to elaborate the sedimentary sequence and its paleoenvironmental implications. The findings suggest that (i) since the late Quaternary, the Haitan Island sedimentary sequence can be divided into three deposition stages: Old Red Sand formed during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3), intermittent sedimentation during the Last Glacial Maximum and coastal aeolian deposition during the Holocene. Furthermore, the study reveals that terrestrial debris was significant as a material source for Haitan Island. (ii) Due to the absence of tectonic uplift, Haitan Island has no thick marine sedimentary record during the Holocene period of high sea level. The Luyangpu coastal sand sheet can be dated to 2.78 ka, which is consistent with previous reports giving dates of 2.4 ka. Prior to the formation of the sand sheet, the sedimentary environment in the area was characterized by lagoon or marsh facies. (iii) Paleoanthropological activities were influenced by sedimentary environmental evolution and geomorphic processes, among others. The Keqiutou Culture experienced high sea levels, which created an intertidal environment near the site and facilitated fishing. However, regression at 5.7 ka led to terrestrial environments, which prompted the inhabitants to migrate. Approximately 3 ka ago, sea levels rose again, coinciding with the initiation of rice cultivation. These factors may have influenced the transition from the Neolithic to Bronze Age culture. This study reconstructs evolution of the sedimentary sequence since the late Quaternary, enhancing our understanding of past human–terrestrial relationship in the region.

Many prehistoric sites are preserved in the southeast China coastal area; however, it is still unclear when ancient human activity occurred owing to a lack of chronological evidence, which is unfavourable for research on the coupling of prehistoric man-earth relationships. In this study, we present an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) chronology analysis of two profiles (T1 and T4) collected from the Neolithic Jianhu (JH) site on Haitan Island, South China. The single-aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol for coarse silt (38–63 μm) quartz was used to determine the equivalent dose (De). The results showed that the OSL technology is reliable and of great value for archaeochronology in coastal aeolian regions. The results suggest that the JH site is one of the earliest Neolithic sites in the coastal area of Fujian. The ages of cultural layers with ancient human activities at the JH site varied from 7.4 ± 1.13 to 5.77 ± 0.35 ka, thereby making the JH site the earliest Neolithic site in the coastal area of Fujian. The sand-tempered pottery unearthed from the JH site can be used as direct evidence of ancient human survival, and its age is 6.33 ± 0.21 ka with a high precision, which presents the earliest OSL data on pottery in South China. We also discuss the regional environmental background of ancient human activity. The Keqiutou culture corresponds to a period of relatively high sea level and a superior natural environment on Haitan Island. The sea retreat 5.7 ka ago was a crucial factor driving prehistoric human migration to the Fuzhou Basin and Taiwan Island.

Streszczenie:
Ionospheric disturbances (such as electromagnetic emissions) in connection to strong earthquakes have been reported in literature for over two decades. In order to be reliable, the identification of such disturbances requires a preliminary robust definition of the ionospheric background in the absence of both seismic activity and any other possible input (e.g., transient change in solar activity). In this work, we present a new technique for the assessment of the electromagnetic (EM) background in the ionosphere over seismic regions. The background is estimated via a multiscale statistical analysis that makes use of most of the electric- and magnetic-field datasets (2019–2021) from the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01).The result is a map of the average relative energy in a 6° x 6° LAT-LON cell centered at the earthquake epicenter (EE). Only EM signals that statistically differ from the background should be considered as events suitable for investigation. The method is tested against two strong seismic events, the 14 August 2021 Haitian earthquake (7.2 MW) and the 27 September 2021 Cretan earthquake (6.0 MW). In the former case, a signal (with characteristic frequency of 250 Hz) can be identified, which emerges from the background. In the latter one, the concurrent strong geomagnetic activity does not allow to tell any distinct signal apart from the background.
