The urbanisation experience of Turkey, particularly in istanbul with respect to the formation of civic culture against varoS culture is investigated. The construction of ideal modern individual against maganda is examined and it is argued that the features attributed to maganda like moustache, arabesk music, lahmacun and bad smell had become objects of symbolic hate.

On the other hand, the 1990s period that ends with the change of leadership from Jiang Zemin to Hu Jintao in 2002 is characterized as the period of &lsquo

This study attempts to analyze this propaganda by focusing on the newspapers Halkin Sesi and Hü

In this study, it is assumed that the mentioned period in which the ground for getting Turkey involved in the Cyprus conflict was prepared can reveal the roots of the current relations between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots. -vis the Other, as if they were mutually exclusive entities. However, when and if these formulations are approached as culturally shaped discursive practices, it is also revealed that they operate with and within similarities, continuities and hybridities. Intellectuals on both sides derive their metaphors from a common cultural and rhetorical pool. The cultural analysis of seemingly opposite ideological positions in Turkish political transformation through the gender lens in general and masculinities in particular identifies the various sites of social power that exist in Turkish society today. The study pays particular attention to conceptualizations of masculinity and femininity accompanying Turkey&rsquo
s modernization. The relative newness of the subject matter, the interdisciplinary approach it necessitates, and the recentness of the theoretical literature and methodological applications, as well as the paucity of empirical work in the context of Turkey employing these parameters necessarily draws the limits of this work as well as showing for the multidisciplinary, &ldquo
unorthodox&rdquo
character of the approach. The study contends that such a cultural analysis of Turkish political transformation through the lens of gender in general and masculinities in particular might create a new epistemological terrain, one that goes beyond the current epistemologies mired in ontological dualities.

A particular emphasis is given on how and on what basis Kurdish nationalism has questioned the formation and the sources of the legitimacy of the Turkish state and its role in the making of Turkish modernity. Kurdish nationalism, in doing so, defined and instrumentally utilized ethnicity, along with other aspects of cohesion such as Islam, socialism and traditional tribal solidarity since the 1920s. This study argues that modern Kurdish nationalist movement emerged by divorcing itself from the Turkish left in the 1960s. It proliferated in the 1970s and spiraled down to separatist violence in the 1980s. Violence has dominated and synchronized Kurdish nationalist discourse in the 1990s. It sought for international recognition and independent sovereignty by targeting the legitimacy of the Turkish state. The Kurdish nationalist movement moved along, in discourse and practice, around the issues related to the Turkish state, which has evolved with the changing and diversified context of international rights.

Factor analysis revealed three factors named self-oriented perfectionism, other-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism. A 2 (gender) x 4 (attachment styles) factorial MANOVA was conducted to examine the possible associations between attachment styles and perfectionism and, whether such a relationship varies as a function of gender. The results of the MANOVA revealed no significant relationship between attachment styles and perfectionism as a function of gender.

Forced to practice a type of journalism different to the model which drew them to the profession, many journalists have lost pride in their work along with confidence in the ability of the media to fulfill the public right to information in a democratic society. The thesis begins with an overview of the emergence of the ethical codes and practices of the profession before focusing on the Turkish media and the implementation of the various codes of practice and regulatory procedures which have been developed in Turkey. v The basic issue in media ethics is the morality of those in the sector and the compatibility of journalism and ethics. In order to ascertain if Turkish journalists believe these standards are being maintained, extensive interviews were undertaken with a sample group of a 114 journalists, comprising new and veteran reporters, editors and members of editorial boards. The study confirms that ethical codes and standards are not being followed in the Turkish media because of commercial constraints underlined by increasing concentration in the sector. Lastly the traces of Orientalism since Turkey&rsquo

Results indicated that problem focused coping and helplessness/self blame had a mediator role between personality variables and psychological well being. Neuroticism was named as a vulnerability factor. Students with neuroticism as a personality characteristic were regarded as risk groups, who were likely to use helplessness/self blame coping. On the other hand, personality characteristics such as conscientiousness, openness/intellect, and hardiness were concluded to be a resilience factors together with problem focused coping.

For the purpose of gathering information on the issue, 50 women were interviewed. Snowball sampling technique was used as the sampling strategy. A questionnaire was developed as the research tool. When the participants&rsquo
husbands migrate on a temporary but recurrent manner, changes in the household composition, income, daily activities, patterns of authority, power and gender relations are observed. The meaning of their husbands'
migration and its impacts, hardships and advantages change from one woman to another depending on their family structure (nuclear/traditional patrilineal), on women&rsquo
s earning an income or not and the patterns of their husbands'
employment. Specifically, the women&rsquo
s status in the household gets better when the duration of the husband&rsquo
s migration increases and when its recurrent pattern becomes more prevalent and stable. It is especially true for the women living in nuclear families. These women have control over money issues and gain authority over decisions made on important matters for their families. Moreover, again in nuclear families where the woman is an autonomous income earner, migration tends to restructure the household and empower the women as opposed to traditional patrilienal families.

s (1883-1950) views on technology, this thesis aims at displaying an institutional economic approach to technology. Most of the contemporary studies on technological change are under the dominance of neoclassical economics. Because of their inadequacies in revealing the complex structure of technological phenomena due to their adherence to mechanistic and deterministic postulations of orthodox economic theory, an institutional approach to technology has become a must. Therefore, today, the fundamental ideas of Veblen and Schumpeter concerning technology are used heavily to constitute an alternative approach by evolutionary and institutionalist economists in their technical, philosophical, sociological and methodological studies. In this sense, this thesis, based upon a comparative analysis of Veblen and Schumpeter, is engaged with presenting an alternative conceptual framework for science and technology policy studies.

The results of factor analysis indicated that earthquake experience could be grouped into two factors, namely severity of impact and perceived life threat. It was found that the respondents had significantly higher perceived life threat than the severity of impact. The factor analysis for coping yielded four factors, which were problem focused/optimistic, fatalistic, helplessness and escape coping approaches. The comparison of the volunteer and non-volunteers samples showed that the non-volunteer sample uses significantly more levels of fatalistic coping. Moreover it was found that women use significantly more levels of helplessness coping. When the impact of the earthquake severity on post traumatic growth levels was investigated, results showed that individuals from Gö
lcü
k (epicenter of the quake) had significantly higher growth levels than those from izmit (further away from epicenter). The results of regression analyses showed that low education level, helplessness approach, and less use of problem solving/optimistic approach were significant predictors of subjects&rsquo
general distress levels. Being a volunteer, using problem solving/optimistic approach and fatalistic approach appeared as significant predictors of posttraumatic growth. The results were discussed within the psychological distress and growth theories. Furthermore, limitations of the study, implications for psychosocial interventions and future research were discussed.

Pełny tekst źródłapoor state of health due to lack of regular physical activity, the fitness facilities should be recognized as means of exercise and recreational activities for all. Yet the lack of studies regarding the status of the health and fitness industry of Turkey such as the credentials of education and certification of the fitness professionals surges the fitness industry into the unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of the health and fitness industry in Turkey. In order to investigate the current status of the health and fitness industry in Turkey, a pilot study was conducted to adopt the &ldquo
Survey of the Health and Fitness Industry&rdquo
developed by Dean Mantia (2000). Participants (N=167) were queried in the areas of business operations, professional development, growth opportunities and consumer influences. Using SPSS frequency counts and percentile rankings were used to analyze and compare responses of the three sub-groups (18 % managers, 62 % instructors, 20 % consumers) that were surveyed. The findings of the study demonstrates that although the industry seems to be in a rapid growth phase, there are problems that would not allow the future success of the industry. The consumers overestimate the credentials of the fitness professionals, and at the same time quickly withdraw if their goals are not met. The industry lacks standardization, and regulations are not adequate to save it from abuse. Although the Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation emerged as the major certification body, it holds less than half (38 %) of the industry, and lacks trust and respect by the fitness professionals due to illegalities. The industry is driven by fad and fashion and the role of the media, and marketing practices seems to be underrated despite their educational value to make the consumers take responsibility of their own health and well being. Future growth of the industry requires investigation of the fitness professionals at all levels and in all provinces of Turkey. In order to develop standardization for the licencing of the health and fitness centers, and certification of the fitness professionals within the industry, it is recommended that the federation should act in a joint effort with the other federations, academia, and the leading international certifying organizations to meet the needs of the fitness industry towards a continuous development and growth.

and to investigate group differences in the way mothers experience having children with LD and diabetes in terms of their adjustment levels. In order to test the above aims, 2 (Gender) x 2 (Diagnosis) ANCOVA&rsquo
s were conducted to evaluate the diagnosis and gender differences on the psychological adjustment levels of children, separately. Significant diagnosis main effects were found for all of the study variables, indicating that children with a learning disability had worse psychological adjustment compared to children with diabetes. Regression analyses were conducted in order to find out the variables associated with the symptoms of depression and anxiety for children with learning disabilities and diabetes groups, separately. Separate regression analyses were run to examine the mediator role of self-esteem between parental rejection and learned helplessness and depression in children with LD. In order to evaluate the diagnosis differences (LD, diabetes) on the psychological adjustment levels of mothers ANCOVA&rsquo
s were conducted. Significant diagnosis main effects were found for all of the study variables regarding mothers, indicating that mothers of children with a learning disability had worse psychological adjustment compared to mothers of children with diabetes. The results were discussed in terms of the treatment needs of children with LD, helping parents and children cope with LD, and the importance of early identification of these children for the prevention of psychosocial problems.

ven October 2007, 118 pages This thesis creates a specific methodology for strategy development while drawing on approaches reported in the literature. The analysis is done at a company that produces gypsum, gypsum board, and related products. A sequential planning method is used where an environmental analysis is conducted in order to define the features of the environment that the company operates in. Then a capability analysis reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the company. For strategy development, this thesis introduces a position index that is used to discuss and differentiate alternative positions. Strategic options for a position are determined by common methods and results from the analyses. The evaluation is conducted with company management, and finally a future position is determined considering company objectives.

Second, in order to examine the media representation of EU, three newspapers representing different political views were qualitatively analyzed and the dimensions of EU as a must, EU as a threat, and EU as difficult were exposed. Finally, according to the thematic units and categories generated from the qualitative analyses
a &ldquo
Social Representations of EU&rdquo
scale was formed and applied to 243 university students. Four sub-scales, namely EU membership is disadvantageous, EU membership is advantageous, religious and cultural threats and EU membership is difficult were extracted from the scale with the reliability coefficients varying from .61 to .88. In order to investigate whether the different factors of social representations of EU are differing on particular dimensions as political view, exposure to media, newspapers read or SES levels, variance analyses were performed. On the other hand, for answering the question of whether the representations of EU could be predicted from life expectations, perceived political agenda or individual dimensions multiple regression analyses were held. Significant differences were found in EU membership is disadvantageous representation in terms of university (Gazi University-METU), gender, and political views of newspapers read. EU membership is advantageous representation differed along the levels of gender and newspapers read. Religious and cultural threats were to be differed along the levels of university, gender, political view, newspapers read and exposure to media. Finally significant differences in EU as difficult representation was found in terms of the ideology of the newspapers read. Feelings toward EU and evaluation of the membership dimensions were found to contribute to the prediction of EU as disadvantageous, EU as advantageous, religious and cultural threats, and EU as difficult representations. Moreover, religious and cultural threats representation is significantly predicted from political view and media exposure.
