Abstract Gurwitsch is the philosopher of consciousness par excellence. This paper presents a systematic exposition of Aron Gurwitsch’s main contribution to phenomenology, namely his theory of the ‘field of consciousness’ with its a priori structure of theme, thematic field, margin (halo and horizon). I present Gurwitsch as an orthodox defender of Husserlian descriptive phenomenology, albeit one who rejected Husserl’s reduction to the transcendental ego and Husserl’s overt idealism. He maintained with Husserl the priority of consciousness as the source of all meaning and validity but he rejected Husserl’s transcendental idealism in favour of a ‘levels of existence’ approach. Gurwitsch’s project was to show the continuity between Gestalt psychology (stripped of its naturalism) and Husserlian eidetics. I explain his concepts of theme, thematic field, margin and horizon as a consistent development of Husserlian thought. I conclude by claiming that neither Gurwitsch nor Husserl fully appreciate how the horizons of an entity can support radical novelty and the application of entirely new contexts.

Editors’ AbstractDuring the 1992–1993 academic year, Harold Garfinkel (1917–2011) offered a graduate seminar on Ethnomethodology in the Sociology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles. One topic that was given extensive coverage in the seminar has not been discussed at much length in Garfinkel’s published works to date: Aron Gurwitsch’s treatment of Gestalt theory, and particularly the themes of “phenomenal field” and “praxeological description”. The edited transcript of Garfinkel’s seminar shows why he recommended that “for the serious initiatives of ethnomethodological investigations […] Gurwitsch is a theorist we can’t do without”. Garfinkel’s ethnomethodological “misreading” is not a mistaken reading, but is more a matter of taking Gurwitsch’s phenomenological demonstrations of Gestalt contextures in phenomenal fields and transposing them for making detailed, concrete observations and descriptions of organizationally achieved social phenomena. Where Gurwitsch addresses the organization of perception as an autochthonous achievement, inherent to the stream and field of individual consciousness, Garfinkel extends and elaborates this field into the social world of enacted practices. The April 1993 seminar also is rich with brief asides and digressions in which Garfinkel comments about his use of Alfred Schutz, his attitude toward publishing, his relationship with Erving Goffman, and many other matters.

According to William James, bodily self-awareness (bodily feeling) is pervasive throughout the stream of consciousness; such awareness is included in each and every pulse of mentality that makes up the stream of consciousness. This installment of the present series of articles begins to consider the role that bodily self-awareness plays in the very structure of the basic durational components of James's stream. The focus here is on an account of this role that the prominent phenomenologist Aron Gurwitsch preferred. Gurwitsch held that pervasive bodily self-awareness belongs to the margin of consciousness; such bodily self-awareness occurs in the form of distinct acts of awareness possessing a separate content from that of the central thematic process which also characterizes every pulse of consciousness. The present article discusses Gurwitsch's account in order to set up a contrast, which will be drawn explicitly in the next installment, with James's more phenomeno-logically integrated conception of pervasive bodily self-awareness.

Este estudo aproxima fenomenologia e Psicologia da Gestalt tendo por eixo o tema do sensualismo na teoria da percepção. Propõe-se analisar a maneira como a Psicologia da Gestalté avaliada dentro do sistema das investigações fenomenológicas de Husserl e de Gurwitsch. Começa-se por uma breve análise da problemática, confrontando os argumentos de Husserl e de Gurwitsch. Na segunda seção, propõe-se uma análise da teoria da percepção desenvolvida por Husserl em Ideias I. Mostra-se como o conceito de hylē desempenha aí um papel central. Na terceira seção, analisam-se as inovações da fenomenologia desenvolvida por Gurwitsch a partir da interpretação proposta pelo autor a respeito da Psicologia da Gestalt. Mostra-se como, para Gurwitsch, esta teoria psicológica renova a compreensão fenomenológica da organização perceptiva e, por isto, descarta uma determinada interpretação do conceito de hylē com base em um novo conceito de intencionalidade. Ao final, algumas conclusões para as duas linhas argumentativas são propostas.

This paper draws on Aron Gurwitsch's theory of relevance which was of outstanding importance for both Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of the body and Harold Garfinkel's ethnomethodology. In the first part we discuss Gurwitsch's conception of relevance in contrast to Schutz'. We then develop a theory of embodied reflexivity drawing on Merleau-Ponty and Garfinkel together with some newer approaches on embodied practice and knowledge. In the second, empirical section we use the concepts and conceptions developed for the description and analysis of selected video recordings of systemic constellation sessions. Systemic constellation is a psychotherapeutic method which is used predominantly in psychological and pedagogical contexts as well as in management consultations. The basic assumption underlying constellations work is that the experiences of representatives are relevant for the person who has initiated the constellation and that they provide information about the issue at hand. The origin, validity, and reliability of the representatives' bodily and relational self-perception is difficult to assess and even more difficult to explain. In our contribution we propose a vocabulary with reference to Gurwitsch, Merleau-Ponty, and Garfinkel, that, as we think, allows for the description of the phenomenon and at the same time throws a light on how relevance can be understood from a sociological perspective inspired by phenomenology.

This article reexamines Alfred Schutz’s famous 1944 Stranger essay and the initial criticism of Aron Gurwitsch. I side with Schutz in thinking of the refugee as a special type of stranger. Then to respond to the charge that the essay is not philosophical enough from Gurwitsch, I read Schutz’s notion of the strange with Husserl’s notion of homeworld and Levinas’s notion of fecundity. This allows us to see the philosophical depth of doing a phenomenology of the stranger and strangeness.

O objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar e discutir o modo como o filósofo lituano Aron Gurwitsch concebe o papel da autoconsciência (self-awareness) e da autoconsciência corporal (bodily self-awareness) no interior de sua teoria do campo de consciência. Em um primeiro momento, apresentamos as dimensões do campo de consciência realçando os princípios organizacionais que estão em jogo na integração entre as diferentes estruturas da experiência consciente. Esta contextualização permite compreender a posição ocupada pela autoconsciência naquilo que o filósofo denomina de "margem" da consciência, domínio da experiência caracterizado pela "irrelevância" ou indiferença em relação à apresentação temática – do objeto da atenção. Em um segundo momento, concentrar-nos-emos em descrever a autoconsciência da dimensão encarnada da existência, com o propósito de avaliar os critérios que permitem a Gurwitsch qualificar a autoconsciência corporal sob a rubrica do conceito de "irrelevância". Ao final, esboçamos certos questionamentos à posição de Gurwitsch desenhados a partir de críticas contemporâneas da fenomenologia e das ciências cognitivas à abordagem do autor.

Los aspectos en los que más focaliza su atención le conducen, ya desde el inicio de su labor investigadora, a sentir una profunda sintonía con el trabajo del netiropsiquiatra Kart Goldstein. Él también el primero que hace en Francia una divulgación del trabajo de este neuropsiquiatra desde la filosofía. De modo que en la obra de Gurwitsch hay dos líneas de investigación que se juntan y que están en él desde el principio: su contacto con el Husserl de Friburgo y su profunda compenetración con él, y su trabajo en Frankfurt con Goldstein y con el psicólogo de la Gestalt que colabora con él: Adhémar Gelb. My aim is to depict Schutz's theory of topic relevance as his own distinctive phenomenology of consciousness. I will show that his conception of consciousness is elaborated from at least three types of elements. First, I will disclose Husserl's influence on Schutz in this matter. I will list a few Husserlian terms that Schutz takes into consideration such as noema, horizon, parts and wholes, attentional ray and passive synthesis. Second, I will show that Schutz turns to Gurwitsch's idea that consciousness is a field of experience where the previously listed elements are held together and find their relational meaning. Third, I will expose how all these elements taken from Husserl and Gurwitsch are reinterpreted by Schutz as being relative to relevance as a basic phenomenon of our mind's selective activity which puts at work different levels of our personality according to the schizophrenic ego hypothesis.

Abstract Whenever one reads internal histories of psychology what is covered is the establishment of a lab by Wundt in 1879 as the initiating act and then the breakaway movements of the 20th Century are discussed: Behaviorism, Gestalt Theory, Psychoanalysis, and most recently the Cognitive revival. However, Aron Gurwitsch described a perspective noted by Cassirer and first developed by Malebranche, which dates the founding of psychology at the same time as that of physics in the 17th Century. This external perspective shows the dependency of psychology upon the concepts, methods and procedures of physics and the natural sciences in general up until the present time. Gurwitsch argues that this approach has blocked the growth of psychology and has assured its status as a minor science. He argued that the everyday Lifeworld achievements of subjectivity are the true subject matter of psychology and that a phenomenological approach to subjectivity could give psychology the authenticity it has been forever seeking but never finding as a naturalistic science. Some clarifying thoughts concerning this phenomenologically grounded psychology are offered, especially the role of desire. The assumption of an external perspective toward the history of psychology fostered the insights about psychology’s scientific role.

AbstractThis article is the editors’ introduction to the transcript of a lecture that Harold Garfinkel delivered to a seminar in 1993. Garfinkel extensively discusses the relevance of Aron Gurwitsch’s phenomenological treatment of Gestalt theory for ethnomethodology. Garfinkel uses the term “misreading” to signal a respecification of Gurwitsch’s phenomenological investigations, and particularly his conceptions of contextures, functional significations, and phenomenal fields, so that they become compatible with detailed observations and descriptions of social actions and interactions performed in situ. Garfinkel begins with Gurwitsch’s demonstrations with line drawings and other abstract examples, and suggests how they can be used to suggest original procedures for investigating the vicissitudes of embodied practical actions in the lifeworld. This introduction to the lecture aims to provide some background on the scope of Gurwitsch’s phenomenological critique and elaboration of Gestalt theory and Garfinkel’s “misreading” of it in terms of his own conceptions of indexicality and accountability, and ethnomethodological investigations of the production of social order.

Lester Embree is very concerned with the issue of culture in his philosophical thinking. Besides his preoccupation with the cultural disciplines, he explores the notions of culture in Schutz and Gurwitsch. He even brings up the term “phenomenology of culture.” With inspirations from Embree, the present paper intends to explore culture as a phenomenological theme. Starting with elaboration on the concept of cultural object in both Husserl and Schutz, the paper focuses on the question of cultural difference and universalism. I contend that despite apparent differences between Schutz and Husserl, there is close positioning between them. In the final part of my paper, I make a deeper reflection on the problem of cultural difference.Lester Embree está muy preocupado con el tema de la cultura en su pensamiento filosófico. Además de su preocupación por las disciplinas culturales, explora las nociones de cultura en Schutz y Gurwitsch. Incluso menciona el término "fenomenología de la cultura". This excerpt by Bernhard Waldenfels is from the second part of his book, Sociality and Otherness – Modes of Social Experience (Sozialität und Alterität – Modi sozialer Erfahrung (Berlin, Suhrkamp, 2015), 363-85), where he tests and further pursues his theory of responsiveness through a series of debates with Husserl, Schütz and Gurwitsch, Searle, Castoriadis, Foucault, and Ricœur. In his discussion of the latter’s work, he focuses on the themes of memory and forgetting, primarily in Time and Narrative and Memory, History, Forgetting. The text is divided into four sections. In the first two, Waldenfels revisits Ricœur’s arguments which he insists did not sufficiently attend to the importance of forgetting in narratives. In the last two, the author proposes a revision of the Ricœurian philosophy of forgetting under the heading of a responsive phenomenology. Both with and against Ricœur, Waldenfels considers forgetting as a pathos that forces us to respond.

Klausimas apie transcendenciją šiuolaikinės fenomenologijos diskusijose susiejamas su klausimu apie jusliškumą. Jutimai tradiciškai suvokiami kaip išorybės ir vidujybės tarpininkai. Nagrinėdamas objekto duotį patirtyje Edmundas Husserlis įsteigia materijos ir formos perskyrą. Grynieji įspūdžiai pateikiami kaip tokia pirminė patyrimo medžiaga, kuri tampa prasminga tiktai per intencionalų formavimą. Michelis Henry supriešina materialią ir intencionalią fenomenologiją. Jis siekia parodyti, jog be grynųjų įspūdžių analizės nebūtų galima ir intencionali fenomenologija. Henry mano, kad Husserlis aiškiai neatsako į klausimą apie juslinės materijos ir intencionalios formos santykį. Be to, jis teigia, jog Husserlis šį santykį interpretuoja pripažindamas intencionalios formos pirmenybę. Taigi Henry siekia reabilituoti materialinę fenomenologiją, nes būtent joje t. y. juslinėje materijoje, kaip tik ir glūdi, jo manymu, bet kokios pirminės duoties paslaptis. Michel Henry and Emanuel Levinas from one side and Aron Gurwitsch and Maurice Merleau-Ponty from the other side have totaly different understandings of sensibility. Analysing sensibility, Husserl elaborates a distinction between hyletic data and animating noesis. He claims that, from one side, hyle itself means nothing without intentional morfe, and, from the other side, the intuitive presentation of an object arises only on the basis of experienced complex of sensations. Michel Henry finds striking contrast between material and intentional phenomenology. He states that without pure impressions intentional phenomenology is impossible. According to him, Husserl gives preference to the intentional morfe and leaves behind the pure impression of sensuous hyletic data. Michel Henry’s task is to rehabilitate material phenomenology, he stresses that sensuous data keeps the secret of primal experience. This turn to material phenomenology rehabilitates „immanence of life“ and creates new form of empiricism. Aron Gurwitsch criticizes construction of hyle-morfe distinction. He claims that descriptive analysis of direct experience fails to ascertain such an intermediary stratum. Also phenomenological description demonstrates that sensibility is not a mediator between immanence and transcendence, but the domain of interaction between senses which create consciousness of meaning. My purpose is to show that this refutation of the hyle in general has important consequences. Phenomenology gives not only a redefinition of the concepts of noesis and intentionality, but also reforms the concept of time.Keywords: hyletic data, intentional morfe, sensibility, phenomenology.

Abstract The content of a mental act- a pivotal element of a theory of intentionality- has a threefold meaning: as a logical concept, is the ideal signification, as a psychological concept, is the core of a noema (i.e., the instantiation of an ideal and as an ontological concept, is the object (real or unreal) intented by the nucleus. We can make a parallel between this Husserlian threefold distinction and the Fregean sense/”reference” distinction, reducing it to the sense/object distinction. This paralleism is not to force the Husserl’s thought to Frege’s, but, on the contrary, to show the structure of the triple meaning of content: Husserl mtroduces the difference between ideal signification and instantiated signification, so the pure and Simple signification and the noematic sense are species of the genus sense. Husserl’s theory of intentionality and his philosophy of language does not go Frege, but beyond. The recognition of that allows us to see the error of Føesdal’s mterpretation, as while as those of Sartre and Gurwitsch. The Fregean sense/”reference” distinction is subsumed by the Husserlian conceptual trio ideal signification/noematic sense/object. This triad of concepts houses not only a semantic theory (as Frege’s pair), but also a theory of a theory of perception. Husserl integrates its semantics in a theory of of consciousness that overcomes the intentio doctrines ofBrentano, Twardowsk1 and the medievals.

The aim of the paper is to show the relevancy of Aron Gurwitsch’s transcendental-phenomenological theory of the field of consciousness for semiotics and the theory of meaning. After a brief biographical introduction, the paper will focus upon the key theoretical points that define Gurwitsch’s theory of the field of consciousness and will consider some of Gurwitsch’s reflections on linguistic and semiotic issues. Finally, it will be shown that the latter are strictly connected with Gurwitsch’s general philosophical framework and, accordingly, that it is possible (and fruitful) to provide a semiotic understanding of Gurwitsch’s phenomenology.

Kriti­kuodami egologinę sąmonės sampratą tiek Gurwitschius, tiek Sartre’as parodo, kad sąmonės išgyvenimų vienovei užtikrinti nereikalinga jokia išorinė instancija. Tuo remdamiesi jie tvirtina, kad ego kaip sąmonę vienijantis pradas neegzistuoja. Tačiau sąmonės intencionalumas reiškia ne tik sąmonės vienovę ar nu­kreiptumą į pasaulio objektus, bet ir sąmonės saviduotį. Sąmonė įsisąmonina save pačią ne tik refleksijos, kaip tai supranta klasikinė filosofija, bet ir tiesioginės savipatirties būdu. Toks patirties, kuri implikuoja tiesioginį sąlytį su savimi, modelis siūlomas Husserlio ir kitų fenomenologų, šiandien reikšminamas Dano Zahavi tyrinėjimuose. Refleksija reiškia nuotolį savęs atžvilgiu, o tiesioginė savipatirtis yra ikireflektyvus cogito arba ikireflektyvi savimonė. Straipsnio tikslas – atskleisti intencionalumo sąryšį su pirmojo asmens perspektyva ir sąmonės sąmoningumo problema. Pasąmonės kaip sąmonę determinuojančio pagrindo apibrėžtis yra nepakankama, nes ji suponuoja išorinį sąmoningumo ir nesąmoningumo santykį. By criticizing the conception of egological consciousness Gurwitsch and Sartre demonstrate that no foreign instance is neccecary to guarantee the unity of consciousness. By using that theory they claim that the ego, as a unifying entity for consciousness, does not exist. However, the intentionality of consciousness means not only its unity or focus on wordly objects, but also its self-givenness. Consciousness realizes itself as self-consciousness not only with the help of reflection as understood in classic philosophy but also by means of direct self-experience. The model of this kind of experience, which implicates self-experience, proposed by Husserl and other phenomenologists, is actualized today in the studies of Dan Zahavi. Reflection means distance to the self, but direct self-experience is a pre-reflective cogito. The aim of this artice is to reveal the connection between intentionality and egological self-experience, between selfgivenness of consciousness and a first-person perspective. The subconsciousness is insufficient as a consciousness determinating basis, because it supposes an outer connection of consciousness with subconsciousness. This essay reflects on what it means to bring together the disciplines of Husserlian philosophy and psychology in light of current thinking about interdisciplinarity. Drawing from Allen Repko’s (2012) work on the interdisciplinary research process, aspects highlighted include justifying using an interdisciplinary approach, identifying conflicts between disciplinary insights, creating common ground between concepts, and constructing a more comprehensive understanding. To focus the discussion and provide an example, I use Aron Gurwitsch’s (1964, 1966) work of extending the concepts and theories of Gestalt psychology to phenomenology. Gurwitsch’s writings can be seen as an attempt to first construct common ground for conflicting insights within psychology and within phenomenology, then create common ground for conflicting insights between psychology and phenomenology. Gurwitsch’s work can be taken as a kind of case study or adaptable model of how to find convergence. The ultimate goal is to bring interdisciplinary studies into productive conversation with phenomenological psychology.

The present installment in this series of articles continues in consideration of the role that bodily self-awareness plays in the very structure of the basic durational components constituting William James's stream of consciousness. The focus here is dual, on both the prominent phenomenologist Aron Gurwitsch's account of this role and on James's account. Critically addressed is Gurwitsch's claim concerning the awareness of the behaviors involved in the process of perceiving. Such awareness is proposed to be typically marginal, in the sense of having a distinct and separate content within each component of the stream. Addressed too is James's account of pervasive bodily self-awareness as integrated within each state, or pulse, of consciousness although varying in attentiveness. Such awareness is always part of, at least, the fringe of every pulse of consciousness, which is not to be confused with Gurwitsch's margin. The present article explains how the awareness of bodily feelings is crucial to James's account of personal identity.

En esta ponencia presentaremos la traducción al catalán del libro Análisis Reflexivo, de Lester Embree, quien es probablemente el representante vivo más influyente y líder de la corriente fenomenológica que empezó con la New School For Social Research y cuya primera generación fue la de Dorion Cairns, Aaron Gurwitsch y Alfred Schutz. Esta tradición empieza con la publicación de Ideas de Husserl en 1913, por lo que la traducción de este libro no deja de ser un pequeño homenaje al libro en el año de su centenario. Contaremos cómo surgió y por qué decidimos emprender la traducción del libro, para pasar a exponer luego algunas dificultades terminológicas que aparecieron a lo largo de la traducción, así como justificar algunos de los términos que usamos para su traducción. Nos centraremos en los términos que pertenecen estrictamente a la tradición de la New School, como son ‘intentivity’ and ‘intentive process’, acuñados por Cairns, para pasar a explicar luego el término que Lester prefiere para referirse a aquello a lo que se refieren estos conceptos: ‘encounterings’. Finalmente, acabaremos por comentar la traducción de los términos ingleses ‘experience’ (que en catalán y en castellano se traduce por ‘experiencia’, que es un nombre pero no un verbo) y ‘objects as intended to’. En resumen, nuestra intención es presentar la traducción del libro Análisis Reflexivo al catalán y que esta presentación sea un humilde homenaje al autor.In this paper we are going to present the Catalan translation of the book Reflexive Analysis, by Lester Embree, who is probably the most influential living representative and leader of what once was the New School tendency in phenomenology headed by Dorion Cairns, Aron Gurswitch and Alfred Schutz. This tendency began with the publication of Husserl’s Ideas in 1913. In this way, the translation of this book is a small tribute to Ideas in the year of the celebration of its centenary. We will explain how and why we decided to translate Embree’s book, followed by an exposition of some of the terminological difficulties that came up during its translation, as well as the justification for some of our terminological decisions. We will focus on the terms that strictly belong to the tradition of the New School tendency, such as ‘intentiveness’ and ‘intentive process’, coined by Cairns, so as to proceed then to explain the term that Lester prefers to use to refer to what those terms refer to: ‘encounterings’. Finally, we will close this talk by commenting on the translation of the English words ‘experience’ (which in Catalan and in Spanish is translated as ‘experiència’, and which can act as a noun but not as a verb) and ‘objects as intended to’. Summarizing, our intention is to present the translation of the book Reflexive Analysis into Catalan and we expect this presentation to be a humble tribute to the author.

AbstractIn the experimental psychology of attention, the phenomenon of attentional context has been underappreciated, while focal attention has taken center stage. Similar problems of context are found in certain realist arguments in .the philosophy of science. Through the lens of Aron Gurwitsch's phenomenology of attention, this paper discusses and evaluates the ways in which context is or is not brought into focus in experimental psychology and the philosophy of science. It concludes that recent developments in both realms show promise. Also some ways are indicated in which phenomenology, experimental psychology, and philosophy of science can benefit from each other.
