By taking care of cancer patients in their process of end of life, nursing experience situations of suffering before the anguish of others. This study aimed to understand the meaning and significance attributed by the nurses from the palliative care cancer hospital. This is a phenomenological research, grounded in Heidegger’s thinking, performed with 13 nurses, who work at Oncology hospitalward, through semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed according to the steps recommended by Josgrilberg. From understanding the statementsof the subjects, two ontological themesemerged: Feeling satisfaction and love in the care offered and Feeling anger and inabilitytowards terminally ill patients. We inferred that working in Oncology Ward is something rewarding for these professionals, but it entails physical and mental suffering, from feeling helpless before the death-dying process. Thus, we showedthat nursing professionals need to be recognized as human beings and as such, also deserving of care.

The purpose of this study was to crystalize a single case of informal athlete leadership in Minor League Baseball (MiLB) during the 2015 season. Teammates and coaches of a Class A MiLB team voted for the highlighted participant as the best athlete leader on the team. The first author conducted 8 individual semistructured interviews with the participant, 2 coaches, and 5 teammates. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis and open-ended prompts based on leadership and athlete literature, the first author learned about the highlighted participant’s emergence as a leader on a team without formal leadership titles. Findings revealed 4 main themes: navigating personal on-the-field failure, fulfilling others’ expectations, helping teammates manage emotions, and fostering a fun working environment. Findings also indicated 1 foundational theme, having a philosophy, that grounded the 4 main themes. Implications for athlete leadership development and future directions for athlete leadership research are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Internally focalized passages in narrative often employ metaphors to capture the experiential states of the focalizing character. My investigation of these metaphors – ‘phenomenological metaphors’, as I call them – has two important precedents in the fields of narratology and literary stylistics: Dorrit Cohn’s (1978) treatment of ‘psycho-analogies’ and Semino and Swindlehurst’s (1996) approach to metaphor and ‘mind style’. After positioning phenomenological metaphors vis-à-vis these related concepts, I put forward the central claim of this article: metaphorical language plays a role in readers’ engagement with focalizing characters because it can sustain readers’ illusion of experiencing a storyworld through the consciousness of a fictional being. But what is it about metaphorical language that makes it especially suited to bring about this effect on readers? In order to answer this question, I use Ian McEwan’s novel Saturday (2005) as a case study, presenting two different lines of argument. First, I contend that metaphors reflect, at a linguistic level, the seamless integration of perception, emotion and language that characterizes our everyday transactions with the world. Second, I look at the relationship between understanding metaphorical language and readers’ empathy for characters, arguing that the continuity between these psychological processes is grounded in their perspectival nature: just as metaphors invite recipients to adopt a new perspective on a conceptual domain, engaging with a focalizing character encourages readers to ‘try on’ his or her experiential perspective and worldview. Taken together, these hypotheses provide an explanation for the effectiveness of phenomenological metaphors at conveying to readers the qualitative ‘feel’ of characters’ experiences.

The article presents different ways of dealing with the subject of the body and corporeality in the humanities, which can form the epistemiological and axiological basis in a reflection on the psycho- and physiotherapeutic relationship with patients, and confronts them with the results of two qualitative studies based on the grounded theory concerning exploration by women of their own body and experiencing their own corporeality, intimacy and touch in medical relations. The author shows that phenomenological philosophy, taking into account the concepts of “carnal self” and “presence of the embodied” that human knowledge always has a carnal character, is the most adequate for use in analyses regarding therapeutic interactions related to the body. Analysis of qualitative research on the process of realising your own corporeality in the cognitive-emotional dimension in the relationship with oneself and in the therapeutic relationship fully confirms the legitimacy of applying the grounded theory method in the study of phenomena regarding carnality and such values as gratitude, mindfulness, care, efficiency and autonomy emerge.

Purpose This paper aims to report on a case study conducted in a private medical partnership of more than 50 specialist physicians where the researcher applied a leadership coaching model grounded in existential philosophy. The paper asserts that existential leadership coaching can be a novel and effective means to address leadership development needs in the unique context of a professional partnership. Design/methodology/approach The qualitative phenomenological study used a bounded case study design using four purposively selected specialist physicians who were involved in four individual structured coaching sessions over an eight-week period. Data came in writing from participants in the form of reflective questions before and after the coaching, and note-taking on index cards during the coaching process. Data also came from the coach/researcher as a participant observer in the form of note-taking and a reflective journal. Findings Findings indicate that working with perceptions of leadership in existential coaching conversations can provide a mechanism for members of a partnership to find greater purpose, and choose how they can contribute better to leadership development in their collective. Findings indicate that the process of imaging the perceptions of fellow partners can unlock the identification of and choice for developmental actions and contributions to the collective. Research limitations/implications For the selected qualitative design, the researcher as the participant observer provided advantages such as insider access and depth of engagement. The study was limited to a small sample in a particular time and context. Findings are thus viewed in the light of this unique case. Practical implications Such a qualitative phenomenological case study provides glimpses into the lives of real-life leaders and offers the coaching, academic and medical fraternities an insider understanding of leadership development in the case of professional partnerships. Originality/value The paper points to a mechanism which may be a means to unlock potential and facilitate leadership development in the context of professional partnerships.

The article presents the developing of a tool aimed to analyze the decision-making (DM) processes in critical care contexts. It was developed in a study conducted through a phenomenological approach. By analyzing the discursive practice through which physicians in an intensive care unit (ICU) arrive at decisions, we construct a discursive profile of each ICU involved, to improve the ICU team members’ knowledge of the complexity of their DM processes. To do so, we develop a system of analysis capable of capturing discursive actions faithfully. Our method facilitates a system of analysis that highlights the role of the various discursive acts in conversational flow, starting from the needs in an ICU setting, which are spontaneously recognized from the data, to the almost simultaneous processes of description and understanding. This has led to the creation of a tool follows the phenomenological-grounded route.

Qualitative methodology has continued to develop through scholarly inquiry, with its application to burn scar research progressed substantially since early use. Concerns were raised in 2015 that qualitative inquiry in burn care and rehabilitation used a limited range of qualitative research approaches. The aim of this commentary paper is to consider how broadly the suite of methodologies available within the qualitative research paradigm have been applied to burn scar research since that call. Observations from a scan of qualitative burn scar papers published since 2015 to March 2022 (n = 36) are presented. Less commonly used qualitative methodologies (such as interpretive design, interpretive phenomenological analysis, narrative inquiry, grounded theory, explanatory case study) and their contribution to burn scar research is discussed. Examples are presented to consider how the application of qualitative methodological approaches (including post-qualitative research methodologies) can be ultimately used to inform meaningful outcomes.

Nursing educators are challenged to construct nursing curricula that seek to prepare competent, humanistic nurses sustaining the spark to care. A qualitative research study, grounded in the phenomenological approach of Colaizzi (1978), explored the impact of a course, titled Body, Mind and Spirit: The Humanities in Nursing, to support this humanistic aspiration. The research findings suggest that the course experience impacted the students in augmenting an understanding of the human condition through the lens of humanities' modalities. The intentional, integration of humanities in nursing courses has the potential to sustain the student inspiration to provide humanistic care.

This study provides and delivers by notifying the glocal leadership approaches that faculty apply and exploit when internationalizing and integrating their curriculum to enable students to acquire glocal skills and capabilities. The study also made use of phenomenological processes to identify, acknowledge, and derive meaning from the faculty perceptions to value when internationalizing their curriculum. We elucidate how faculty transfer knowledge during classroom activities and various curriculum subject matters utilized to internationalize in classroom situations. Also, we used purposive sampling and snowballing with sample size grounded on the size of the sample, whereas the selection of participants comprised a purposeful selection of sixteen (16) faculty members. An open coding technique was used to recognize occasions in which interviewees’ perceived faculty glocal leadership skills positively affect internationalizing their curriculum. We implement a phenomenological qualitative single-case approach through individual interviews with open-ended questionnaires and document analysis to collect data. The sample engrossed only the tenured track and instructional faculty in internationalizing glocal leadership contents. Findings exposed that all participants described and clarified the ways they integrate diverse methods and pedagogies into their curriculum to impart to students. It also emphasizes how they reveal their experience through global-local practices and take advantage of available opportunities to make students obtain global-local experiences to augment internationalization.

This article explores aspects of the quotidian history of space in the Greek Revolution of 1821, using as a case study the transitional events of the siege of the Acropolis by the Ottoman army in 1826 and the recapturing of the city of Athens. Through a thorough study of space as embodied knowledge grounded in the dynamic interaction between humans and material culture, it identifies the shifts in the Athenian landscape during this period. Its findings are based on primary textual and visual sources pertaining to warfare, which are juxtaposed to the Greek and Ottoman emerging official perceptions of the significance of the city of Athens as a political and imaginary objective. The article deploys a phenomenological analysis of space that foregrounds the everyday experiential dimensions and is highly relevant in understanding the ideological and political complexities and implications of the shifting spatialities of the revolutionary period.

This present research focused on exploring undergraduate students’ perception of distance learning in terms of experiences, benefits, and drawbacks (time management, cost, technical difficulties). It was grounded in a qualitative approach with a phenomenological case study design. Three undergraduate students of the 9th semester from the English Education Department in Wiralodra University were recruited to participate in this research. The data were derived from the three-interview series framework that consists of fifteen questions. The interview data were qualitatively analyzed by using inductive phenomenological reduction based on Seidman (2013). This research revealed that undergraduate experience varies, from the struggle with the connection to the limited communication between lecturer-students or student-students. Distance learning also impacts their feeling on how they mean distance learning, which makes the students mostly lazier as the communication is also limited and the policy is none to them who are not attending the class. It is also showed benefits and drawbacks where it is more flexible but unstable. The cost comes to be cheaper, but they still pay the tuition fee even though they did not use the campus facility, and the main technical difficulties lie in which device and apps they used at that moment. Keywords: perception, distance learning, benefits, drawbacks.

A tool named ‘Creative Expressive-Bodily maps of emotions’ (CE-BME) has been used widely among counselling practitioners or therapists in Malaysia’s mental health settings. However, limited research was done to examine the helpful & unhelpful process and helpful & unhelpful effects in practice. This preliminary study aims to explore specifically the practical effects of using this tool from the therapist’s perspective. This preliminary study used a qualitative approach, namely the grounded theory method, through face-to-face and video call interviews with four therapists from the mental health setting. These therapists conducted sessions for children and adolescents using the CE-BME in their sessions. The data through grounded theory analysis in this phenomenological study aims to answer the research question: What are the helpful effects of using the CE-BME in psychotherapy with children and adolescents? As a result, seven themes from two categories of helpful effects emerged. With regards to the effects on the client from the therapist’s perspective, four themes emerged given by i) experiencing positive emotions, ii) improving in cognition process and insight, iii) positive behaviours in therapy, and iv) inducing problem-solving. In addition, three themes emerged regarding the effects on the therapist, including i) positive emotions toward the therapist, ii) increased skills in the therapy session, and iii) increased competency in handling a young client’s case. The finding confirmed the positive effects on emotions, behaviour, and cognition in therapy for young clients who are incapable to express their feelings verbally (from the therapist’s perspective) and impacts the therapist’s feelings, behaviour, and competency in handling child and adolescent clients.

Background: Current evidence suggests that hospital nurses' end-of-life care is complex due to the conflicting tasks of treatment-focused care and palliation. This is a topic that needs further exploration. Aim: To understand hospital nurses' experiences of end-of-life care. Method: Interpretive phenomenology was used to explore 10 hospital nurses' experiences. Findings: Nurses' individual experience of death informed their attitudes to death. The dominant theme was death-as-calm, accompanied by human connection, and death-as-process. The nurses' actions indicated their end-of-life care included love, defined as a desire to create calm, grounded by the virtue of natural goodness, responsibility and dedication, with a willingness to focus on the individual and their family, making the most of whatever time they have left. To continue providing end-of-life care the nurses successfully protected their authentic self by using a ‘professional identity’ and employing ‘defence of self’. The nurses found the unpredictable nature of hospital end-of-life care difficult but used a collaborative power to manage situations. Conclusion: This study suggests hospital nurses successfully navigate an approach to hospital end-of-life nursing care, represented as a ‘harbour’, which facilitates transitioning from ‘stormy’ treatment to calm end-of-life care and death.

It can be daunting to ensure a movement flow that unleashes creativity when facilitating movement-based design activities that aim for play, games, sports, and technology domains. When incorporating movement in game design, it is vital to understand game and learning elements but equally movement and play elements because these are important motivational factors. To fully understand the play, sport, and physical activity aspects of movement-game design, we must investigate the world of physical activity and performance. As a part of the Erasmus+ project, MeCaMInD, the innovative design of Movement-Modifier cards was developed, intended as a tool in the facilitation process to engage participants in physical exploration, supporting, modifying, or tweaking movement-based design practices for an inclusive game and physical activity and performance design. The Movement-Modifiers is grounded in sports and health theories, creative design tools and methods. To harvest the Movement-Modifier’s tweaking creative potential, it is crucial to understand when and how to use them in the generative parts of a movement-based design process. Grounded in a phenomenological approach and based on a multiple case study, this paper explores how eight facilitators used the Movement-Modifiers to challenge and tweak the generative processes. The cases are 1) A two-day sports innovation camp for 80 K12 high school students, 2) A workshop on Inclusive exergame design with 15 participants at the Nordic Innovation Summit 2022, 3) A course teaching 65 sport bachelor students the creative acrobatic body performance design. Empirical data were generated using a combination of observations, video recordings, and interviews, and the phenomenological analysis was condensed into written facilitator narratives. We present Movement-Modifier facilitation strategies in three phases of movement-based design facilitation, illustrated on a continuum with the facilitator’s level of involvement on one axis and participation structure on the other. The facilitator’s role is multifaceted, and effective Movement-Modifier facilitation requires sensitivity, adaptability, and careful planning. The Movement-Modifiers should be seen as a tool to support the design process rather than the essence of it.

Simulation modeling is crucial in support of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) for nuclear power plants (NPPs). There is a challenge, however, associated with simulation modeling that relates to the time and resources required for collecting data to determine the values of the input parameters. To alleviate this challenge, this article develops a formalized methodology to generate surrogate values of input parameters grounded on the decomposition of phenomenological nondimensional parameters (PNPs) while avoiding detailed data collection. While the fundamental principles of the proposed methodology can be applicable to various hazards, the developments in this article focus on fire PRA as an example application area for which resource intensiveness is recognized as a practical challenge. This article also develops a computational platform to automate the PNP decomposition and seamlessly integrates it with state-of-practice fire scenario analysis. The applicability of the computational platform is demonstrated through a multi-compartment fire case study at an NPP. The computational platform, with its embedded PNP decomposition methodology, can substantially reduce the effort required for input data collection and extraction, thereby facilitating the efficient use of simulation modeling in PRA and enhancing the fire scenario screening analysis.

Abstract:Patient’s needs and rights are the key to delivering state-of-the-art modern nursing care. It is especially challenging to provide proper nursing care for patients who are reaching the end of life (EOL). In Chinese culture nursing practice, the perception and expectations of these EOL patients are not well known. This article explores the feelings and wishes of 16 terminally ill Chinese cancer patients who are going through the dying process. An open-ended questionnaire with eight items was used to interview 16 terminally ill Chinese cancer patients, and was then analyzed by a combined approach employing grounded theory and interpretive phenomenological analysis. Four dimensions were explored: first, patient’s attitudes towards death, such as accepting the fact calmly, striving to survive, and the desire for control; second, the care desired during the dying process, including avoiding excessive treatment and dying with dignity; third, the degree of the patient’s acceptance of death; and fourth, the consequences of death. This cognitive study offers a fundamental understanding of perceptions of death of terminally ill cancer patients from the Chinese culture. Their attitude toward death was complex. They did not prefer aggressive treatment and most of them had given a great deal of thought to their death.

An increasing number of individuals receive and survive intensive care treatment; however, several individuals experience problems afterward, which may threaten recovery. Grounded in a lifeworld approach, the aim of this study was to explore and describe what intensive care patients experience as limiting and strengthening throughout their illness trajectories. Ten former intensive care patients were interviewed three to eight months after hospital discharge. Using Giorgi’s phenomenological analysis, a general structure of gaining strength through a caring interaction with others was revealed. The structure consisted of three constituents: feeling safe through a caring presence, being seen and met as a unique person, and being supported to restore capacity. Being met with a humanistic approach and individualized care appeared to be important, and the findings are discussed within the framework of lifeworld-led care. To facilitate improved aftercare of the critically ill, more tailored support throughout the illness trajectory is needed.

Background: Conscience is an important concept in ethics, having various meanings in different cultures. Because a growing number of healthcare professionals are of immigrant background, particularly within the care of older people, demanding multiple ethical positions, it is important to explore the meaning of conscience among care providers within different cultural contexts. Research objective: The study aimed to illuminate the meaning of conscience by enrolled nurses with an Iranian background working in residential care for Persian-speaking people with dementia. Research design: A phenomenological hermeneutical method guided the study. Participants and research context: A total of 10 enrolled nurses with Iranian background, aged 33–46 years, participated in the study. All worked full time in residential care settings for Persian-speaking people with dementia in a large city, in Sweden. Ethical considerations: The study was approved by the Regional Ethical Review Board for ethical vetting of research involving humans. Participants were given verbal and written study information and assured that their participation was voluntary and confidential. Findings: Three themes were constructed including perception of conscience, clear conscience grounded in relations and striving to keep a clear conscience. The conscience was perceived as an inner guide grounded in feelings, which is dynamic and subject to changes throughout life. Having a clear conscience meant being able to form a bond with others, to respect them and to get their confirmation that one does well. To have a clear conscience demanded listening to the voice of the conscience. The enrolled nurses strived to keep their conscience clear by being generous in helping others, accomplishing daily tasks well and behaving nicely in the hope of being treated the same way one day. Conclusion: Cultural frameworks and the context of practice needed to be considered in interpreting the meaning of conscience and clear conscience.

The increase in the number of institutions offering degrees in interdis ciplinary computing raises a set of questions at the epistemological level. A set of questions is raised: is any integration of computing with some other field a representation of interdisciplinarity? What are the limits of enabling? What are the requirements of integration? Does the product of interdisciplinary computing remain computer science? These questions are urgent and answers should be provided especially that the number of such degrees is increasing accompanied by a growing demand on these jobs, as reflected on jobs and opportunities websites. A definition for interdisciplinary computing is needed. This paper attempts to answer these questions based on the huge literature available on interdisciplinarity in general, and interdisciplinary computing in specific. Special reference to career opportunities will be made. The study will be completed using document analysis examining the related documents as the data source of a qualitative research. A phenomenological study will be used to understand the meaning different schools are appropriating to interdisciplinarity. Enough documents will be consulted to extract the common themes and build a sufficient data set of emerging themes to validate the findings. While the phenomenological study aims at describing the essence interdisciplinary computing, grounded theory methods will be used to formulate a definition. As a result of this study is expected to better inform on the design and understanding of how different schools are managing their offering. Some explanatory, exploratory, or descriptive case study involving multiple types of data sources will be explored to acquire a deep understanding and provide support of the findings. The paper concludes with a proposed set of PLOs for interdisciplinary computing and reflecting its educational aspects and respecting technical norms.

Qualitative methods help us understand context, explore new phenomena, identify new research questions, and uncover new models of change. To better understand how researchers in health education and health behavior use qualitative methods, we reviewed qualitative articles published in Health Education & Behavior from 2000 to 2015. We identified 48 articles that met our inclusion criteria and extracted information on the qualitative inquiry framework, use of theory, data collection methods, sampling strategy, general analysis approach, and reporting of results. Use of common qualitative inquiry frameworks was rare, with just one grounded theory study, five ethnographies, and one case study. No studies were framed using phenomenological or narrative inquiry approaches. Theory was used most commonly to select sensitizing constructs for analysis (41.7%) and to inform development of data collection instruments (27.1%). Interviews were the most common data collection method (66.7%), with focus groups next most common (39.6%). Sampling was typically purposive (87.5%), although often not labeled as such. Almost all (95.8%) the articles used quotes to illustrate themes and more than half (58.3%) used descriptors of magnitude (e.g., most, some) to report findings. The use of qualitative methods by health education and behavior researchers could be enriched with more intentional application of a broader range of inquiry frameworks. More deliberate application of a range of inquiry frameworks has the potential to broaden the types of research questions asked, application and generation of theory, study design, analytic strategies, and reporting of results.

Rationale, aims and objective: Measuring nurse caring may provide empirical evidence to assist clinicians and administrators in making decisions. The aim of the present study was to develop a new scale, called the CARE-Italy, grounded in the Italian culture, for measuring nurses’ caring behaviours. Methods: A mixed method approach was applied in developing the instrument. The item generation and scale development were performed through a qualitative phenomenological approach and a focus group with a panel of experts. The provisional instrument was then administered to a convenience sample of 439 nurses and then questionnaire scaling and association analysis were performed. A dual scaling analysis of successive categories was performed to identify preferences on the rating scale. An item selection based on item-scale correlations and item weights was performed. Subjects’ mean scores were computed and standardized in a 100-point scale. Results: The 20 caring behaviours perceived by nurses to be the most important ones constitute the final version of the CARE-Italy questionnaire. They concern patients’ surveillance, professional relationships with patients, satisfying patients’ and family members’ practical and psychological needs, team consultation and nurses’ emotions. Conclusions: A relational and paternalistic caring approach by Italian nurses seems to be suggested. The next step of the research project will be the validation process of the CARE-Italy questionnaire with a Likert scale measuring the occurrence of the 20 caring behaviours in daily practice.

The field of qualitative scientific inquiry employs a fast-growing variety of approaches, whose traditions, procedures, and structures vary, depending on the type of study design and methodology (i.e., phenomenological, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, action research, etc.). With the interpretive approach, researchers do not utilize the same measures of validity used in positivist approaches to scientific inquiry, since there is "...no one standard or accepted structure as one typically finds in quantitative research" (Creswell, 2007). With the absence of a single standard, how, then, is it possible for qualitative researchers to know whether or not their study was done with rigor, that it has validity, that it is ready to submit to their peers? The research literature is sprinkled with references to quality in qualitative inquiry, which helps to construe a study's validity. Markula (2008) suggests that we validate our study's findings by assuring readers that it was done "in the best possible way." While each research tradition has its own set of criteria for judging quality, we present here general concepts drawn from the literature. We hope this article will provide a framework from which qualitative researchers can judge their work before submitting it to their peers¸ one which will help ensure that their study was done "in the best possible way."

Research results suggest that illness can undermine patients’ dignity and that dignity can be understood as an experience formed in communion with others. The aim of this study was, therefore, to illuminate the meanings of lived experiences of dignity as an intersubjective phenomenon from the perspective of dyads in palliative care. The authors analyzed transcripts from interviews with nine dyads using a phenomenological–hermeneutical method. Within the contexts of the dyadic relationship and the dyadic–health care professional relationship, the authors’ interpretation revealed two meanings based on the participants’ lived experiences: “Being available,” related to responding and being responded to in terms of answerability and we-ness, and “Upholding continuity,” linked to feeling attached through the maintenance of emotional bonds and being connected through upholding valued activities and qualities in daily living. The authors further reflected on the meanings in relation to philosophically grounded concepts such as presence, objectification, dependence, and dyadic body.

Background: Managers in clinical education units (CEUs) have the responsibility to facilitate evidence-based environments for both caring and learning. Promoting such environments might be challenging in times of financial constraints and organisation changes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe how managers experience their responsibility to support the caring and learning environments in CEUs.Methods: The study method followed the principles of Reflective Lifeworld Research (RLR) grounded in a phenomenological approach. The study was conducted at a hospital in Southern Sweden. Ten first- and second-line managers responsible for CEUs were interviewed. The interviews were conducted as reflective dialogues using an open, and bridled approach. Results: The results show that clinical education unit managers regard the responsibility to support caring and learning environments as a challenging experience, elucidated in three themes: (1) to have or to take responsibility; (2) cooperation that supports and challenges; and (3) bringing it all together— a daily struggle. Conclusions: In conclusion, the managers of CEUs need to be aware of the importance of common theoretical grounds for caring and learning. Caring and learning are more likely to be intertwined when responsibility is taken, when collaboration between actors is characterised by respect and when an awareness of the importance of reflection is present. Awareness of the importance of creating opportunities for reflection and mutual collaboration among the different actors involved could lead to improvements in nursing education and, therefore, improved patient care.

AbstractThe orientations of European prehistoric structures have been studied independently by landscape archaeologists and archaeoastronomers. Despite their similar interests, the two fields have failed to converge primarily because of their differing epistemologies. This paper argues that archaeology has much to gain by integrating the two fields to provide a fuller and more balanced exploration and understanding of the location and orientation of the European megaliths. It is suggested that prehistoric archaeoastronomy needs to become more grounded on the archaeological record and context of the prehistoric structures it studies. If it is to generate knowledge of value to archaeology it needs to become a “skyscape archaeology.” This paper looks at current archaeoastronomical approaches through the lens of archaeological practice. It identifies some limitations and discusses how landscape archaeology can inform archaeoastronomy on overcoming them. A methodology that attempts this necessary cross-fertilization, by shedding unfounded assumptions and developing a more phenomenological approach to pattern-recognition, is proposed. This methodology is applied to a case study in central Portugal. The emergent narrative, linking a cluster of dolmens to a local mountain range and the star Aldebaran, not only fits the archaeological record, but is mirrored by local folklore, lending further support to the validity of this methodology.

In today’s educational scenario, STEM integration has becoming a panacea for addressing the global technological revolution. With the United States of America as the pioneer in this disciplinary integration paradigm, many countries are trying to embrace STEM integration approach in their respective educational system. Disciplinary integration approach is a complex approach yet offers many advantages in enhancing students’ interest in STEM-based careers. However, it also brings some hindrances such as the collation of each discipline to function and how this should be implemented without losing each of the disciplines. Based on this concern, the approach complexities were viewed in relation to the STEM knowledge (ontology), ways of STEM learning (epistemology) and STEM values (axiology). Since STEM implementation in Malaysian education system is still in the infancy stage, various aspects need to be taken into account rather than just literally adapting the commonly perceived concept. The exploration of STEM integration knowledge concept was done by applying phenomenological case study approach. Seven scientists from multi-disciplinary research practices participated in this study by sharing their experiences through semi-structured interviews, observations, written articles and biographies. By applying grounded theory strategy analysis, four sustainable STEM knowledge concepts emerged. Overall findings suggest that STEM integration knowledge concept is crucial and may assist in facing the new industrial revolution for Malaysia.

With the shift from face-to-face learning to online mode, both teachers and students need to adjust the online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, numerous researches has been undertaken, particularly ICT adoption in EFL learning. Despite a growing study investigating ICT use in the EFL context, relatively few studies report on the adoption of smartphones as a platform for teaching English situated in the vocational landscape. To fill this gap, this study is aimed to investigate teachers' and students' perceptions about the adoption of smartphones in EFL learning in one of Indonesia’s vocational schools. Grounded in a phenomenological case study, this research provided details of vocational English teachers' and students’ live experiences interacting in English teaching via smartphone as a learning platform. In this study, two English teachers and three students have recruited as the participants voluntarily. The result of this study showed numerous benefits and challenges in the use of smartphones in the vocational school context. The writer found that the adoption of smartphones is beneficial, helpful, practical, and enjoyable for learning English, especially in using several smartphone applications. Despite the benefits of a smartphone, the participants reported that the instructions need to explain clearly as they are sometimes confused with the teacher's instructions. Drawing on the findings, this research implied that English teachers are suggested to adopt a wide range of learning resources to gain better students' understanding of learning English.

Purpose The aim of this paper is to give an empirical illustration of value co-creation and to argue for narrative methodology as a fruitful analytical strategy when exploring the processes of value co-creation. Design/methodology/approach Through an in-depth case study in the non-profit housing sector in Denmark, the research explored how residents perceive and co-create value in a long-term service relationship. The point of departure is an understanding of value co-creation as a phenomenological construct determined by the beneficiary, and the research is based primarily on the perspectives of service-dominant logic and customer-dominant logic. Findings The research elucidated how value is both socially created and deconstructed through stories. Moreover, narrative analysis revealed how residents’ perceptions of services are deeply embedded in context and time. In this way, the study highlighted that the co-creation of value is inherently social and temporal. Practical implications Understanding how value is perceived and negotiated by customers might assist practitioners to refine their understanding of value co-creation and lead them to address customers in more nuanced ways. Originality/value Prevailing streams in service research on value co-creation argue for more studies and empirically grounded examples of value co-creation processes, especially those based in the customer sphere. This paper contributes to such an enhanced understanding of the process of value co-creation and gives the outline of a new methodology for studies in this specific area of service research.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and outdated risk factors are some of the increasing chronic comorbidities for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV), leading to poor cardiovascular outcomes. Health systems in Namibia are not responding adequately to this problem by identifying risk factors when screening clients for antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. Despite effortsto ensure integration of CVDs data management into existing ART platforms, incomplete disease surveillance and record-keeping remain prominent drawbacks for data managers. Hence the challenge to produce tangible evidence on relationships between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to determine perceptions of healthcare workers regarding data management practices useful in integrated CVD-related preventive care services to PLHIV.A qualitative approach with phenomenological study design incorporating Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory approach was implemented. Thirteen key informants were purposively selected and interviewed. Data was transcribed verbatim, exported to ATLAS.ti and analysed by generating themes, quotes and networks. Five themes related to data management practices regarding CVDs and its risk factors in the context of HIV at targeted health facilities have been identified. They include monitoring exposure to CVDs risk factors; measuring health outcomes of those risks; handling of risk factors data, and how to use data for decision making in response to CVDs among PLHIV.

Abstract Objective Fibromyalgia patients face particular challenges in building relationships with health care providers. In this study, we examine, from patients’ perspectives, factors that influence the formation of effective patient–provider relationships. Design This research employed a qualitative approach to analyze data collected from a study that employed semistructured interviews. Methods Multiple methods were used to recruit 23 fibromyalgia patients for interviews. Semistructured interviews were conducted to explore how participants’ information behaviors, including their communication with and relationships to providers, changed over time. The interview data were analyzed using a qualitative analytic method based on interpretative phenomenological analysis and constructivist grounded theory. Results We identified three important factors that influenced the building of effective relationships: patients and providers’ interactions involving information, identifying health care providers that fit patients’ needs, and realizing shared responsibilities. With regard to information, we described three important themes: information gaps, providers as educators/facilitators, and collaborative information behavior. Conclusions Understanding of the key elements of relationship development between patients and providers can be utilized in various ways to improve clinical care. First, the knowledge gained in this study can inform the design of patient education materials that assist patients to identify providers that fit their needs, prepare for consultations, and develop realistic expectations for providers. The findings of this study can also inform the design of resources and tools to enable clinicians to communicate and relate better with their patients.

Purpose This study aims to demonstrate al-Biruni’s originality in the study of religion and the exploration of religious truth, while his firm stance on his religion effectively advocated his need to understand others more accurately. Design/methodology/approach This study is a review of al-Biruni’s literature that uses content analysis method in establishing al-Biruni’s approach in understanding other religions through three main methodologies. From these approaches, this paper advocates al-Biruni’s firm stance toward his own faith despite using a scientific study on Hindu, which is in contrary to other phenomenological scholars who find that religious truth is relative in nature. Findings Al-Biruni’s methods have proven that researchers are not necessarily required to dispose off their religious identity and commitment to faith, while simultaneously achieving objectivity and accuracy. Al-Biruni’s approach to understanding others may be seen as a remarkable early model of interfaith, intercultural and inter-civilizational dialogue seeking, eventually, to promote a harmonious co-existence within a highly polarized cultural and religious context. This inquiry demonstrates al-Biruni’s scholarly depth in his attempt to harmonize his methodology with the study of religious phenomena in compliance with Islam. Originality/value This study signifies al-Biruni’s intellectual background with his mastery of first-hand information as a solid basis and grounds for the effective understanding of others in a descriptive, systematic and comparative manner. This paper also signifies al-Biruni’s methods of understanding others without having to dispose off one’s religious identity and commitment to faith which could be exemplified by other religious scholars.

This article explores the developments of educators' knowledge and practices in online teaching and learning as their professional development during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study begins with the question, "How do I improve my online teaching and learning knowledge?" The research is grounded in two models: the CRASP model (teachers' Critical attitude, Research into teaching, Accountability, Self-evaluation leading to Professionalism) proposed by Zuber-Skerrit (1992) and Fuller’s (1969) Concerns Based Model of Teacher Development (CBMoTD. The educators' critical attitude and skills towards their own knowledge of online teaching and learning were identified as areas that required professional development to support students' achievement at tertiary levels. Participants were two educators working with tertiary students (N=250) in the Initial Teacher Education in New Zealand. Data were collected through observations and collaborative discussions. The educators' investigation of their own practice highlighted the need for developing insights in their own professional development, including online teaching and learning, maintaining the objectives and quality of the course, and quality assessment. Interpretive Phenomenological data Analysis and Inductive methods were utilised to analyse the data. The findings highlighted students' accomplishments when a caring approach was implemented instead of a traditional task-driven approach. The findings will benefit course developers, educators, and students in online teaching settings by prioritising student care as the core of any educational settings.

Background: The literature on professionals’ perceptions of dignity at the end-of-life (EOL) shows that there is a need for studies set in different cultural contexts. Lithuania represents one of these little-studied contexts. The aim of this study is to understand professionals’ attitudes, experiences, and suggestions concerning EOL dignity to provide knowledge upon which efforts to improve EOL care can be grounded. The research questions are “How do Lithuanian health care professionals understand the essence of dignity at the end-of-life of terminally ill patients?” and “How do they believe that dignity at the EOL can be enhanced?”. Materials and Methods: The study was exploratory and descriptive. It employed an interpretive phenomenological method to understand the essence of the phenomenon. Lightly structured interviews were conducted with professionals who had EOL experience, primarily with elderly and late middle-aged patients. from medicine, nursing, social work, and spiritual services. The interviews were primarily conducted by audiovisual means due to pandemic restrictions. Using a constant comparative method, the research team systematically codified text and developed themes by consensus after numerous analytic data iterations. Results: Four primary themes about EOL dignity were identified: Physical Comfort, Place of Care and Death, Effects of Death as a Taboo Topic, and Social Relations and Communication. A fifth, overarching theme, Being Heard, included elements of the primary themes and was identified as a key component or essence of dignity at the EOL. Conclusions: Patient dignity is both a human right and a constitutional right in Lithuania, but in many settings, it remains an aspiration rather than a reality. Being Heard is embedded in internationally recognized patient-centered models of EOL care. Hearing and acknowledging individuals who are dying is a specific skill, especially with elderly patients. Building the question “Is this patient being heard?” into practice protocols and conventions would be a step toward enhancing dignity at the EOL.

BackgroundParamedics are experiencing numerous policy and protocol changes in addition to facing enhanced risk of personal exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 outbreak offers an opportunity to capture the experiences of paramedics during substantial and rapid changes to workplace policy, protocols, and professional roles in the healthcare system. To date, this ongoing multi-jurisdictional study has captured a better understanding of the lived experiences of Canadian paramedics throughout the COVID-19 outbreak and provided insight to which leadership approaches have been most impactful throughout such unprecedented circumstances.MethodData was collected through an online survey, consisting of quantitative and qualitative questions. Survey responses (n=428) were received between April 2, 2020 and August 1, 2020. The study, theoretically grounded in a phenomenological approach, employed inductive thematic analysis to code the data. The survey remains open and has expanded to include England for further data collection as the pandemic continues to evolve.ResultsMajor themes identified encompassed both professional and personal elements. Although some participants praised organizational leadership and how professional needs had been met throughout the first wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, other respondents expressed weariness to change management approaches and further need for clear communication strategies. Many participants also expressed increased stress, exhaustion and anxiety negatively impacting their mental health.ConclusionsEarly results confirmed a need for paramedics to adapt professional approaches to overcome barriers presented by COVID-19. Although most respondents noted confidence in their ability to provide patient care to those exhibiting symptoms, many noted concern regarding changes to standard of care for patients. In this presentation, we will discuss preliminary results from our study, and share recommendations pertaining to leadership and change management impacting paramedic practice.

Objective: To analyze the risk of stress in the role of caregivers of cancer patients. Method: Qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological research. The participants of the study were caregivers of a patient with cancer, taking as inclusion criteria that they had more than 1 year of uninterrupted care of the patient. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews that were recorded and then transcribed word by word. The information saturation criterion was taken into account, at which time the information collection was completed; therefore, 10 interviews were carried out. The data analysis was carried out following the grounded theory in the data, emerging categories and subcategories from the discourse of the study participants; triangulating the data with previous studies and theoretical aspects on the subject. Results: The risk of caregiver stress is related to physiological, emotional, economic aspects and expectations with the recovery of the family member having as a basis the support of the family and the activities performed by them. Conclusions: The risk of caregiver stress was evidenced with greater relevance from the physiological point of view, since most caregivers presented body aches, tiredness and insomnia. From the emotional point of view, the caregivers presented alterations such as sadness, anxiety and from the economic point of view, there were resignations from their work places, their profession and their life projects.

Purpose – The paper aims to address the question, “What is the impact of web-based video via webcams on virtual team trust and effectiveness?” Change and evolution in team perceptions over time are described. The result is the creation of a theoretical model describing the effect of webcams on virtual team development. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative phenomenological heuristic case study was used to explore the individual expectations and experiences of the team members over a six-week period. To strengthen reliability and validity, two qualitative methods, content analysis and constant comparative analysis — a means of grounded theory, were used to both test the historic basis of the existing literature on trust and effectiveness in virtual teams and to explore how the use of webcams influenced the work, interactions and effectiveness of a virtual team. Both qualitative methods involved different pairs of researchers using inter-rater coefficients to address coding reliability and validity. Results from the two methods were then compared and contrasted. Findings – The resulting model highlights the importance of ongoing, formal differentiated training on new technology. This research also suggests careful management of technology change and its deployment to enhance outcomes of various organization forms. Research limitations/implications – Given the nature of the qualitative study, the findings are not generalizable, but may illumine the understanding of webcams and technology adaptation in similar virtual teams. Practical implications – The resulting model highlights the importance of ongoing, formal differentiated training on new technology. This research also suggests careful management of technology change and its deployment to enhance outcomes of various organization forms. The study incorporates Technology Acceptance Theory and applications of the Kirton Adaptation-Innovation Inventory. Originality/value – With the increase in bandwidth on the Internet, technologies such as webcams have become more viable for use in virtual teams.

Background: Nursing is ethically grounded profession. Nurses work in proximity with patients where they may encounter ethical problems too. However, little is known about the ethical challenge of nurses working in Nepal. Therefore, this study was undertaken to explore lived experience with ethical challenges among nurses working in government hospitals of Kathmandu, Nepal. Methods: Qualitative phenomenological design was carried out among nurses working in the five government hospitals of Kathmandu, Nepal. Twelve nurses who had greater than 5 years of work experience in patient care were selected purposively for the study. Data was collected through face to face interview method using in-depth interview guideline. All interviews were recorded in a digital voice recorder. The collected verbatim was transcribed and analyzed thematically. Results: All nurses experienced ethical challenges and perceived stress from those challenging situations. Three main themes derived from the participants’ experiences of ethical challenges were: errors in patient management; justice to the patient; burn out from duty. Nurses found inappropriate service to the patients, limited access of treatment and care to the patients, errors in procedure, autonomy and confidentiality issues, compromised respect and dignity of patients. When nurses found stressful working situation and conflicting legal and moral obligations, they felt burnout that leads to compromised quality of patients care. Conclusions: Nurses experience different ethically challenging situations in their duties. Experiences of these challenging situations are stressful and it affects nurses’ ability to deliver quality service. Hence, attention should be given to address ethical challenges of nurses.
