The purpose of this creative project was to represent the structure and dynamics of the emotion of grief through a visual medium. Grief, as a process that occurs over time, is usually represented sequentially and verbally as in the writings of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. This project depicts the stages of grief by representing them both sequentially and simultaneously from a first person point of view by means of a visual medium, (i.e., videotape) in order to emotionally and personally involve the viewer in the process. The creative project is comprised of four video tapes each differing in length. of time between fifteen to thirtyfive minutes. The video tapes are presented as a documentary having a total of five participants who candidly express their experience with the death of a significant person in their lives and how they dealt with their grief. The four videos are shown all at the same time with the television monitors approximately twelve to fifteen feet apart. The video tapes are on file in the Art Department.

This study explores the role of nature in three picture books that broach the topics of death, grief, depression, or loss: Bryan Mellonie and Robert Ingpen’s Lifetimes, Shaun Tan’s The Red Tree, and Roni Schotter and Kimberly Bulcken Root’s In the Piney Woods. Using a close reading of both the text and the visual images, these picture books are analyzed for their use of nature in discussing the concepts of death, regeneration, life, and the life cycle. The three texts reflect two primary historical trends of ecocriticism that of nature-as-space and nature-as-knowledge as exemplified by writers in the Romantic era, the American pastoral, and the Victorian period. Through a further examination of the text and image relationship within the text, the texts are then analyzed for their effectiveness and accessibility to children within the practice of bibliotherapy.

Streszczenie:
Stillbirth is a unique and complex bereavement for parents, with the potential to cause considerable psychological distress, and often characterised by feelings of worthlessness and isolation. Despite dramatic changes to the provision of care practices and interventions to support parents over recent decades, there is limited theoretical or clinical evidence to inform psychological understanding and interventions for grief and distress following stillbirth. A systematic review of quantitative studies aimed to explore the effect of interventions designed to reduce parental distress following stillbirth. Twenty-two studies met inclusion criteria. Tentative support was found for providing mementoes of the baby and information regarding aetiology, support group attendance, and cognitive behavioural interventions for parents with clinical levels of distress. Contradictory findings for the impact of contact with the baby prevent clear conclusions regarding the effect of this practice. However, substantial methodological weaknesses were identified in the reviewed literature, and the current evidence base is not considered able to reliably inform care practices and intervention approaches, with further high quality research evidence needed. The second, empirical paper aimed to assess the application of the cognitive behavioural model of complicated grief to women bereaved by stillbirth. A cross-sectional survey design explored the predictive value of cognitive behavioural variables for explaining variance in grief, both independently and after controlling for demographic, obstetric and loss-related factors. Seventy-eight women bereaved by stillbirth within the preceding two years took part. Negative thoughts about the self, threatening interpretations of grief reactions and depressive avoidance strategies significantly predicted higher grief scores, accounting for 81 % of score variance and all remained significant predictors after controlling for relevant demographic, obstetric and loss-related variables. Findings support the application of the cognitive behavioural model of complicated grief to women bereaved by stillbirth.

This hermeneutic dissertation examines clinical and theoretical materials from depth psychology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, religion, and literature to understand the role of literal and symbolic death among key thinkers in depth psychology, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and James Hillman. Beginning with the Freud-Jung separation, then moving into the postmodern era with the arrival of James Hillman’s archetypal psychology, it explores the collective wound that informed the development of linear models to address grief, as well as minimal education and sparse clinical training on the intricate facets of grief. Although the experience of grief and the manner in which one grieves may be unique to the individual, they are influenced by relational, cultural, and spiritual beliefs. Technological advances have increased exposure to global incidences of death and grief, but this has not led to a reduction in denial and avoidance: they remain prominent Western defenses. Therefore, paradigm shifts that include new approaches to grieving which honor the individual and collective soul, interdisciplinary dialogue, and an ongoing relationship with the dead are essential to humanity and our well-being.

My thesis is an exploration of the emotional connection we have with architecture. The inspirations for the Grief and Healing Sanctuary were the healing experienced at quiet spaces of reflection and my fatherâ s stories as a Navy Vietnam shipboard combat veteran. I designed a building to provide a place for healing and to deal with grief. The building was designed for patients and their families being treated at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Not all families leave as they arrive. The families, many from out of town, need a place to reflect, pray, cry, or laugh. This need was reinforced by my fatherâ s stories of his transition from normal life to the extremes of combat to life back as a civilian. No one comes out unaffected, and there is not always a place to go and reflect. The Grief and Healing Sanctuary provides these spaces for all people who have these needs.

Lang, Kenneth. "Helping Churches Respond To Their Members In Grief By Providing A Grief Recovery Seminar". Thesis, Biola University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3557239.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:

The loss of a loved one is a challenging event in the lives of everyone. Each individual must deal with grief and grief recovery. The Western culture has difficulty in dealing with loss and grief. In addition, churches are inadequate in helping their members who are in grief: helping them recover, find meaning, and have an enduring connection with their loved one as they embark on a new life.

In order to determine if churches can be equipped to provide support during the grief recovery process, this research project focused on training members of Calvary Chapel of Syracuse in the process of grief and grief recovery. The seminar was based on two things. First, a comprehensive review of the Bible was completed to reveal what it says about death, grief, and comfort. Then, a review of the literature dealing with grief and grief recovery was completed that provided insight into the common experience of those in grief, the process of grief recovery, and how individuals find meaning and embark on a new life without their loved one.

Using quantitative research methods, this project examined the participants of a grief and grief recovery seminar. The participants completed surveys that were assessed using recognized statistical procedures to determine if a seminar could adequately prepare them to work with individuals in grief.

The results of this research project provide a way to assess the use of a seminar for equipping church members to work with individuals in grief and recommendations on how this process can be enhanced.

This dissertation is a hybrid project that includes a critical paper and a collection of creative writing, including poems, a nonfiction piece, several drama pieces, and an erasure project. The critical paper is an analysis of the mental ailments and disassociated discourse of Anton Chekhov’s characters in three of his plays—The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, and The Cherry Orchard. Many of Anton Chekhov’s characters display symptoms of depression, including suicide attempts, and formal thought disorder. The creative section’s drama pieces were loosely influenced by Anton Chekhov’s work, but all of the work completed in the creative section is connected through common themes of mental illness and grief. Many of the poems in this section symbolize grief through the loss of a father. Some of the more grief-stricken moments are symbolically represented through animals, such as the mice in “All Summer.” Later, this same type of grief is transformed in “Flatlines,” the titular work of the dissertation, to a young woman’s reimaging and hallucination of childhood characters brought to life to her by her father’s death. The last work presented in this creative section is the erasure project that blends the poetry with the drama–a stage manager’s notes blacked out, silenced, and relit with a different perspective, but still a connection to the theatre’s space, set, and characters.

Streszczenie:
Complicated Grief (CG) has been identified as a potential consequence of bereavement that is associated with unique and debilitating outcomes. This thesis investigated autobiographical memory in CG. This program of research focused on the specificity and content of autobiographical memories in the context of CG. Study 1 investigated memory retrieval specificity using a cue word paradigm. Bereaved individuals with CG displayed an overgeneral retrieval style (OGM) compared to bereaved individuals without CG. Study 2 found that CG participants were also less specific in imagining future events in response to positive cues. Further, there was a significant independent relationship between memory retrieval specificity and the specificity of future imaginings. Study 3 investigated the relationship between overgeneral memory and social problem solving. CG participants performed more poorly on this task; however, there was no independent relationship with memory retrieval style. Study 4 investigated the impact of treatment on OGM. Results indicated that as symptoms of CG reduced following treatment, individuals retrieved more specific memories to positive cues. Studies 5-7 examined proposed relationships between self construct and autobiographical remembering in CG, as outlined in Conway and Pleydell-Pearce??s (2000) self memory system model. In Study 5, individuals with CG were more likely than bereaved controls to view their self-identity as being related to the deceased. Study 6 investigated the relationship between self-discrepancy, personal goals and memory content. CG individuals were more likely to recall loss-related memories, and there was a relationship between personal goals and memory content. Study 7 extended examination of these factors to future-related thinking. Finally, the program recognised the importance of investigating the impact of the cognitive strategies that individuals may adopt to manage painful memories. Using an experimental Stroop procedure as a measure of thought accessibility, Study 8 investigated thought suppression in CG. The results suggested that CG individuals experienced greater interference from death-related cues. In summary, these studies highlighted some of the key memory processes that may be involved in the maintenance, and potentially the resolution, of CG.

Efforts to predict successful grief resolution in adults have suggested that older adults may experience grief differently than younger adults. In addition, age, coping style, perceived control, and a social support system have also been identified as possible mediating factors in grief resolution. This study explored the effect of age, coping style, and perceived control on grief resolution in 48 independent living residents (aged 65-86) of a Northern California community who had experienced the loss of a spouse. All were members of a widowed person's support organization. It was hypothesized that successful grief resolution would be positively related to perceived external control and to an avoidance coping style. Grief resolution was measured by the Grief Resolution Index (Remondet & Hansson, 1987) and the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1978). Coping style was measured by the Coping Responses Inventory (Moos, 1993). Perceived control was measured by Rotter Locus of Control Scale (Rotter, 1966). The degree of grief resolution was analyzed using 2 x 2 x 2 (Age x Locus of Control x Coping Style) ANOVA on each measure of grief resolution. The hypotheses were not supported.

At seventeen, I lost my fourteen-year old brother in a shooting accident. After hearing the news of my brother’s death, my Great Aunt Mary wrote a letter to my family. The one line I remember was “I’ve heard that it takes three years to heal from the passing of a loved one.” Five years after Jacob’s death, I was once again confronted with losing a brother. Jaxon was born and died within twenty-four hours. I hadn’t yet “healed” from Jacob’s death, and I didn’t know how to do so. The elusive nature of memory when confronted with personal trauma calls into question issues of identity. Does the previous self still exist after loss? In this memoir I document the impact of tragic grief and how death not only informs how we perceive the future, but how we interpret our past selves. Through the tri-part structure, I experiment with viewpoint, beginning with a first person “I,” struggling to fit my brothers’ deaths into a single narrative line. From here, the narrative shatters as I reflect upon my childhood self with a different lens and the distance of third person--the self being so fractured, there is no “I” left. Finally, the memoir moves to direct address, speaking to Jacob. Jacob is now a “you,” an alive and vibrant presence that becomes a part of the narrator as she explores her grief and begins to piece herself back together. Through this exploration, she discovers that “healing” is complex and that art can both aid in the process and chart the path.

Streszczenie:

This applied theoretical paper suggests a new theory for shame due to grieving a traumatic loss. Changes in worldview, the undermining of self-efficacies, complex trauma, soul-wounding and the impacts of traumatic memory resulting from grief are explored. Grief shame, as it is proposed, is a result of bereaved victims recognizing through self-labeling that their grief behaviors violate societal feeling rules and expression norms. This provokes social consequences and forms of sanctioning (exclusion) for those demonstrating traumatic grief behaviors; they are perceived to endanger society’s sense of wellbeing, which impedes cultural meaning making. This is noted to occur through differences in the definition of what is considered natural grief that is driven by medicalization of the experience. Being a griever rather than being observed to grieve is the catalyst for the present-day expectations of grief that grief is a something to recuperate from, driving the grief shame experience and the condition for bereaved victimization that there is something wrong with those who grieve beyond standards of grief behavior set by Western society. The shame experience itself may cause the griever to experience an attack on self, which separates shame from guilt, leading to withdraw from the shame influence (society) with soul wounding social/emotional consequence.

Streszczenie:
In this dissertation, grief is explored as a path to enlivening and enacting a curriculum of cosmopolitanism. Grief in this research is understood as that which presses heavily upon us, that is, grief is not understood solely as bereavement, but as those experiences that weigh heavily on our lives. This research contends that it is through attending to the heaviness of people’s experiences that the relationship between self and other – the foundation of cosmopolitanism – can become central to curriculum. This research suggests that the traditional canon of knowledge that schools and curriculum developers rely on is primarily exclusionary to epistemologies and ontologies of the nonwhite and female world. As a result, the curriculum reflects only certain student populations while others are cast aside as ghosts haunting the curriculum. The undervaluing of certain epistemologies and ontologies in curriculum and society creates space for bigotry and the caricaturizing of the ghosts of the curriculum. Exploring cosmopolitanism while casting aside certain kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing perpetuates non-cosmopolitan realities. For cosmopolitanism to be enacted, it needs to be explored and understood beyond the traditional canon. This dissertation makes use of autobiography to disrupt the cosmopolitan canon. Grief is inherently the endurance of violence, and it is through the Intimate Dialogue, a method of attending to grief inter-subjectively, that violence can be undone. This is a form of pacifism that sheds the notion of passivity and becomes an active response to violence.

Streszczenie:
This research by project is asking whether the affect of embodied materiality can be materialised from complicated grief, in an investigation into the relationship between the affect of grief and the creative, embodied encounters with paper materials. In some types of traumatic loss, complicated grief can subsume the bereaved in a way like no other. Mourning can be a very difficult process. The research integrates creative practice, working with fibre-based materials, with the scholarly and cultural exploration of the literature and theory of mourning as a specific psychological state of mind. It is an exploration of the experience of mourning a complicated grief, through the sustained process of an embodied encounter with the materiality of making paper. Paper becomes the metaphor to discuss research questions that connect the maternal with affect in maternal grief, that paper can be the Symbolic and the body that inputs Cartesian culture is feminised using affect of the embodied encounter with materials. This research is not into art therapy, nor into art as illustrative of psychology. I use a hybrid approach to methodology, involving auto-ethnography and subjective experience as a medium through which to reflect on the relationship between materiality and affect. The substrate uses play; judgment is suspended, whilst the substrate is being handmade to create individual materiality. Culture and social theory, which enabled the methods of auto-ethnography and creative practice research to emerge, is the paradigm of postmodern and post positivist accounts of new relations between ‘subjectivity’ and ‘objectivity’. Moving forward from Glaser and Strauss’s thinking on grounded theory, display, together with reflective practice, is compatible with the emergence of feminist thinking on the significance of subjectivity and affect. The submission comprises a written dissertation, which reflects on the six years of creative practice, making new sense of the conventional silence surrounding complex mourning. The practice itself, connotes affect through the materialities of paper.

This qualitative study examines the migratory experience of immigrant Latina married women. It looks at their experience from both an individual and a systemic perspective. It compares their experience to that of grief due to bereavement using Parkes' theory of the grief process. This research also presents findings as to the effects of migration on the marital system. Analysis of interview data provided by 12 Latin American women who resided in the United States ranging from 2 years to 10 years, allowed a comparison between the experience of these women and the grief process theory. The findings of the study indicate that although there are some slight differences between grieving a deceased person and grieving the loss of a country, the similarities predominate. The data gathered was divided into the categories of initial mixed-emotions, searching, anger, disorganization and despair, recovery. Furthermore, the impact of immigration on the marital dyad was analyzed. The interviewees reported an increase in marital argument during the first stages of immigration with a tendency to decrease as time lapses. Overall, the interviewees identified their marital relationship as being stronger than prior to coming to the United States.

Streszczenie:
Background: Perinatal grief, which affects parents whose babies die during pregnancy or within a year after birth, has been shown to lead to severe morbidity and, in some cases, mortality. Despite the assertion that all these parents are susceptible to developing complicated grief because of the nature of their loss, there has been little evidence to support this. However, some variables which may predict the likelihood of these bereaved mothers having unremitting, intense grief have previously been identified, including: maternal age, education, marital status, occupational status, other losses and the presence of living children. Objective: The present studies assessed perinatal grief and the impact of these variables on the risk of developing complicated grief using self-reported data in two separate samples of perinatally bereaved mothers (N = 121) and (N = 146) up to five years after their loss. In Study 2 other psychopathological symptoms, including: depression, anxiety, stress and post-traumatic stress were also assessed. Results: Contrary to expectations, findings indicated that the proportion of these mothers who experienced complicated grief, 12.5% in Study 1 and 18% in Study 2, was similar to other populations of grievers. In both studies those variables that had been suggested as indicative of higher risk for developing psychopathology were not supported except for the absence/presence of other children. Conclusion: Perinatally bereaved mothers report clinically significant symptoms of complicated grief as well as other psychopathology such as depression, anxiety, stress and post-traumatic stress at levels similar to other populations of grievers. The symptomology of these mothers should be routinely monitored to assess need for referral for treatment when indicated. Limitations, such as the convenience samples of participants and strengths, such as, quantitative design of the study, are addressed and implications are outlined.

Streszczenie:
Grief is a universal reaction to loss. Losses are often associated to the death of a loved one, however, they may also originate from the end of an intimate partner relationship. Whereas studies have focused on grief after a divorce or on symptomology students endure after a death, this article attends to the understudied college student experience of grief following a breakup. Within emerging adulthood, the loss of a close romantic relationship may be challenging to navigate alongside the daily stressors of college. Stigmatization by means of social cues convey sentiments, such as the need to get over an ex-partner, which in turn can lead to disenfranchised grief where individuals do not feel heard, accepted, or valid in their experience of grief. It was hypothesized that as endorsed closeness of the past relationship increases so does grief intensity, and that as feelings of stigmatization increase also increases grief intensity. Multiple regression models supported the main effects, although the interaction effect between levels of closeness and perceived stigmatization was not supported. Implications and future directions are discussed.

It was also aimed to investigate whether demographic variables including gender, age, education of grieved parents, gender and age of deceased infant, presence of other children were predictors of parental grief reactions after an infant death. The sample of the present study consisted of 55 couples experiencing an infant death within the last 2 years. Sample was recruited through death records kept in hospital and municipalities of Ankara by the researcher. To test the hypotheses of the study paired samples t-test and stepwise regression analyses were performed. According to the results of the study, it was found that there was a significant difference within each spouse&

Streszczenie:

Through hermeneutic and heuristic research this thesis looks at melancholia or complicated grief with the contributing factor of identity questioning. From a depth psychological perspective, normal grief is differentiated from melancholia or complicated grief, which involves the unconscious. This exploration employs the theory of Allan Hugh Cole Jr., whose work on melancholia draws on that of Donald Capps, Erik Erikson, and Sigmund Freud. A disposition to melancholia, particularly in men, comes from the first abandonment by a primary parent, resulting in identity loss and resistance to resolution of grief. Factors such as trauma, sexual orientation, religion, or marginalized race can have exacerbating effect on melancholia and were found to have treatment implications. Ritual, art, play, humor, and dreams can be identity-conferring and restorative resources. The author proposes that melancholia with identity issues should be understood as a psychological problem that is distinct from, although it can prolong and complicate, grief.

Streszczenie:
Literature Review: The literature review summarises the main theoretical models of grief and illustrates how these have developed from intra- to inter-personal models and from clinical to psychosocial models of bereavement. The paper explores the concepts of pathological, anticipatory, and disenfranchised grief, and attempts to identify aspects that are relevant to grief in contexts other than bereavement. Finally an attempt is made to integrate themes from the literature that are applicable to the experience of loss amongst relatives of traumatically brain-injured patients. Some useful concepts are identified, but there is not yet an adequate description in the literature of the characteristics and time course of the experience of grief in this population. Research Paper: - This research paper seeks to contribute to our understanding of grief and loss in the relatives of brain injured people. The study investigated the utility of a modified form of the Inventory of Complicated Grief as an appropriate measure of grief, and explored the hypothesis that unresolved grief was associated with poor family adjustment following traumatic brain injury. The study found that the Inventory of Complicated Grief had potential to be a useful assessment tool, with some further modifications, but in this small study, it was not possible to identify a component of grief distinct from anxiety and depression that predicted family adjustment. Critical Appraisal: - The process of identifying and carrying out the research study is discussed. The direction of the study was influenced both by clinical questions and practical issues. Factors that assisted the process or made it more difficult are described. Finally, consideration is given to the question of future research in the light of the experience of carrying out this particular project.

Persistent intense yearning for the deceased is a core clinical feature of complicated grief (CG) that distinguishes it from other mental disorders that develop following loss. The Yearning in Situations of Loss Scale (YSL) is a recently developed assessment of yearning. To assess the psychometric properties of the YSL in those with CG, we administered the YSL, Inventory of Complicated Grief, and Quick Inventory of Depression Symptomatology to 303 treatment-seeking bereaved adults with CG. Our results suggest the YSL is a reliable assessment with acceptable convergent and discriminant validity as a measure of yearning in those with CG.

Streszczenie:
The parent-child relationship is significant throughout the life course, although both positive and negative changes occur as children reach adulthood and develop an identity independent of their family of origin. Grief resulting from parental loss during this time may be a product of many variables including age, relationship quality, and sex roles. The current study examined several variables potentially influencing grief after the death of a parent. As part of a larger study, adults (n = 180) completed measures assessing parental involvement, personal grief and adjustment, as well as sex role preferences. The archival data were subjected to analyses of covariance, taking into account time since the death and children’s sex role preferences (traditional or egalitarian). Female sex of the child was significant in predicting several aspects of grief, suggesting that women have a stronger emotional experience of grief. This may be a result of young women’s stronger emotional bonds with parents when compared to men, feelings of exclusion from college peers during bereavement, or vulnerability for rumination. Sex role preferences were also influential in several aspects of grief. Sex of the parent was not significant, although the interaction for sex of the parent and sex of the child was, suggesting that for daughters, the loss of a mother may be particularly difficult. Results suggest that women may express more intense emotions as part of the grief process and maintain stronger bonds with the deceased, although this likely depends heavily on cultural, familial, and religious contexts, as well as cause of death.

Streszczenie:
This thesis joins a vibrant interdisciplinary conversation about animal subjectivity. Specifically, it addresses the question of whether nonhuman animals possess capacities for a human-comparable feeling of grief and spiritual experience. Historically, a substantial amount of philosophical discourse, particularly in the Western tradition, has centred on attempts to articulate a framework of defining features that would capture the presumably distinct nature of the human. Grief and spirituality have jealously been guarded as such uniquely human attributes, and despite nonhuman animal grief, as of late, having been admitted into scholarly discourse, the potency of the feeling fails to be recognised as equal to human grief. This thesis examines the discourse on grief and spirituality, identifying conceptual and methodological approaches that have contributed to the prejudice against nonhuman animals. By exploring the underlying commonalities that enable the experience of grief and spirituality in both human and nonhuman animals, the research finds that experiential diversity likely manifests on an individual rather than on a species level. A vast and growing body of knowledge concerning attachment and loss, and the shaping of animals’ (human inclusive) experiential realities more broadly, elucidates the role of the implicit forces at work for the emergence of grief and spirituality. Simultaneously it evidences that a human-comparable interpretative dimension, while it may colour the experience in distinct ways, is not necessary to experience both phenomena deeply. In both academic and popular discussion, in fact, considerations of grief and spirituality in nonhuman animals continue to be tainted by anthropocentric philosophical questions, failing to recognise the significance of the more fundamental psycho-biological processes at the root of these experiences. A more integrative approach, as presented in this thesis, offers a stronger theoretical base for the consideration of grief and spirituality across species with ensuing ethical implications for human treatment of other animals and the developing of scholarship.

Streszczenie:
A cultural belief held that young children lack the ability to experience grief, based on the assumption that children have not yet developed to understand, or to be emotionally affected, by the concept of death. 'Disenfranchised grief', a term first coined in 1989, refers to grief that escapes notice due to emotions not finding expressive outlets. Disenfranchised grief afflicts young children in particular. The aim of this study was to provide guidelines and identify support structures that teachers can use to help a child that is experiencing grief in the Foundation Phase classroom due to loss of a parent, sibling or grandparent. Multiple case studies were utilised to investigate children's experiences with disenfranchised grief within different contexts, and existing support systems for children who suffered the loss of a loved family member. Three Grade 3 learners experiencing grief were purposively selected from a state school to participate in semi-structured individual interviews, drawings activities and verbal narratives. Three themes emerged from the data: experiences of grief, emotional experience and support. The findings indicate that children do experience grief, but need support in giving expression to their emotions, and to process their losses. Recommendation is made to teacher-training institutions to incorporate counselling as part of their teacher-training curriculum.
