Streszczenie:
The development of a green-building project following a specific reference standard such as LEED, brings new conditions and restrains for all subjects involved in the process. Such changes affect technicians, owners, bureaucracy and also the management tasks either during design or construction phases. Within this scope, project management plays a key role for the optimization of the design-project development. This research analyzes the design process of a single case-study project from the project management perspective, taking into consideration all the activities that negatively affected the project design development. The project selected for the scope of the research is a new school complex located in Northern Italy currently pursuing the LEED Gold certification with a project cost of 13,2 million Euros. A new methodology was created in order to analyze the project and evaluate the effects of detected project-management issues under three different points of view: costs, time and building sustainability. Such “issues” were identified by researchers on the basis of the LEAN-definition of “waste”. The scope of the research is to develop and test a methodology for the optimization of the project management processes during the development of a LEED building design in Europe through the detection and evaluation of process wastes. The results showed that project management issues related to green-building tasks affect considerably the cost, schedule and sustainability of the project design and vice versa, the accuracy of the project management tasks affect the sustainability features of the final building design.

The life cycle of a ship has an age limit related to its operation. When the ship economically is not profitable any more, it will be recycled or scrapped. Since the scrapped ship has plenty of hazardous materials, special care should be carried out to manage the wastes in accordance with the national and international available regulations. With regard to this a ship recycle yard that conducts ship breaking and recycle of the ship’s outfits, machineries, and infrastructure should be well designed in order to comply to all regulations that prevent it from producing harmful and polluting wastes to human and environment. The study was aimed to design an environmentally friendly or green ship recycle yard in Indonesia as a pilot project in anticipation to the booming of old used merchant ships fleet due to the implementation of cabotage principle. The project is located in the Maritime Industrial Cluster in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung Province, Sumatera. The ship recycle yard is designed with a capacity of maximum 30,000 DWT ship to be recycled, and all the activities involve in the yard would comply and refer to the environmental and IMO regulations, to ensure that no harm and hazardous wastes polluting the surrounding land and sea by arranging a proper layout and providing proper facilities and working procedures.

Which possibilities are there for cultivating critical, creative, artistic and ethical thinking in collaboration with a major corporation in a student project? The project explored in this article involved first-year students enrolled in a BA product design course at the Oslo Metropolitan University. The research approach combined methods such as practice-led research with students, photo-elicitation interviews, autoethnographic writing and reflections. The article attends to potentials and failures in critical, creative and artistic practices that aim to challenge problematic modes of production in society today. The project initially set out to explore critical modes of creativity and making practices that are different from commercial design. However, the same project was embraced by Ikea, who both sponsored it and exhibited the final results. This embrace may have the effect of zeroing out, countering or incorporating attempts to be critical towards commercial design.

The selection of the project delivery method (PDM) for any project is critical—it establishes the communication, coordination, and contractual interfaces between the owner, contractor, and designer. With an increase in the number of green design projects, understanding the relationship between the PDM and green design is paramount to project and contract management. While it is reasonable to assume that a relationship between green design and design-build (DB) exists since both theoretically are intended to foster an integrated, holistic, team-based collaborative project; it is also appropriate to understand the relationship between green design and other PDMs. This preliminary research examined possible relationships between design-bid-build (DBB), construction management (CM), and DB PDMs and green design with the goal of beginning to identify potential positive correspondence between them. To develop an initial understanding, two main tasks were completed. First, existing published research was evaluated to reveal aspects of projects and PDMs independent of green design. Second, the research collected primarily qualitative information by conducting structured interviews with approximately twenty-five individuals, including owners, contractors, and designers involved in completed green design projects, mainly in the public sector. Upon completion of the structured interviews, responses from the interviews were reviewed for green design project characteristics. Additionally, the interviews provided insight on the initial understanding of the current state of knowledge and experience in green design and PDMs. After the two main tasks were completed, both were evaluated for commonalities. Preliminary results found that seven green design project characteristics emerged that in some cases related to a specific PDM, but in other cases were independent of a PDM. Future research will quantitatively investigate the relationship between green design projects, PDMs, and success factors.

Green buildings have recently become a key aspect of the construction field and bring along a renovation of the whole industry chain. Such changes introduce new challenges for all subjects involved, and designers are also affected by such issues, especially for the development of projects based on international green building standards. Within this scope, project management plays a key role in the optimization of the design phase. This research analyzes the design process of international projects from the project management perspective through a multiple case study approach, considering the sustainability-related tasks that negatively affect the project design development under two types of contractual approaches: Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build. It aims to identify whether the Design-Build or Design-Bid-Build process is the best solution for developing green building projects. Two case studies in Italy and two case studies in Spain are analyzed, and the effects of the project management issues are evaluated under three different points of view: Time, cost, and level of sustainability of the building. A poorly planned process for the achievement of the various green building features of the project can impact the project schedule and the budget, whereas, a poorly managed project could also negatively impact its green building features. Finally, this research also highlights the positive relationship between process integration and green building design development.

Should green buildings not only work differently, but also look, feel, and be conceived differently? The emergence of LEED accreditation as the leading form of environmental performance monitoring and its associated points and checklist format can mask the necessity for architectural projects to have focused and effective design strategies that integrate sustainability with the design process. Green accountability does not always go hand in hand with architectural quality: a good building is certainly not necessarily a green building, while a green building is not always a good work of architecture. So it becomes important to recognize the unique character and possibilities in each project and then to develop environmentally responsive concepts that support and enhance the form of the architecture. This article discusses the current context for “Green Design Practice” through a series of quite different design assignments where the focus is upon enabling the design to emerge from the recognition of the “environmental and sustainability potential.”

Purpose While the general trends in green building (GB) research are known, there is not yet a detailed review of studies on project delivery attributes (PDAs) influencing GB project outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature to understand the contributions of existing research in this area and to identify the challenges, gaps, and lessons for the future research relating GB project delivery. Design/methodology/approach For the systematic review, specially developed coding based on Boolean operators is used to search for relevant studies in major databases, i.e. Web of Science and Scopus. The studies from the initial search (443) are subjected to two rounds of scrutiny for shortlisting only relevant publications. Using a qualitative review of the shortlisted studies (20), the research objectives and findings of the studies are synthesized and critically analyzed. The contributions and challenges facing research in this area are identified. Future research directions are proposed. Findings Studies in the area have established association between PDAs and various GB project success criteria. In the literature, some PDAs such as project delivery method have been given greater attention than others. Challenges facing PDA research in GB include: the limited number of GB project cases and the complexity of GB project delivery process involving an overwhelmingly large number of variables, thereby limiting scientific rigor and creating some gaps in knowledge. The interaction among PDAs and their cumulative effect on various project performance outcomes/metrics have not been studied, limiting the validity of the existing studies. Scope exists to apply a combination of non-linear, dynamic, probabilistic, explicit, and implicit modeling as well as inductive and deductive approaches to research in this area. Research limitations/implications Existing research findings have limited application in practice. Non-linear, dynamic, probabilistic, deductive, and inductive research techniques and approaches can substantially advance knowledge and lead to plausible findings that can be applied in practice. Originality/value Considering the critical role of PDAs in the successful delivery of GBs, the review provides clear directions for future research.

For enterprise, how to quickly realize the selection of green innovative design projects has become a key issue for improving innovation performance. Based on an analysis of enterprise product innovation and customer green preferences, an indicator set for innovation performance in enterprise was established. Considering the fuzziness of the correlation between indicators for innovation performance in enterprise and consumer’s green preferences, a fuzzy clustering method was used to identify the internal relations among the indicators for innovation performance with green preferences of customers. Then a wavelet neural network was used to select the innovation design project for various green preferences of customers. Finally, a case study was proposed to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the method. This work can help the enterprise to develop green design, products, and serve uniformly, which can effectively shorten green product development cycles, reduce cost, and improve enterprise innovation performance greatly.

It has become clear over the last decade that the building industry must rapidly change to meet globally pressing requirements. The strong links between climate change and the environmental impact of architecture mean an urgent necessity for alternative design solutions. In order to propose them in this project, two emergent fabrication techniques were deployed with natural fiber-reinforced polymers (NFRPs), namely tailored fiber placement (TFP) and coreless filament winding (CFW). The approach is explored through the design and prototyping of a stool, as an analogue of the functional and structural performance requirements of an architectural system. TFP and CFW technologies are leveraged for their abilities of strategic material placement to create high-performance differentiated structure and geometry. Flax fibers, in this case, provide a renewable alternative for high-performance yarns, such as carbon, glass, or basalt. The novel contribution of this project is exploring the use of a TFP preform as an embedded fabrication frame for CFW. This eliminates the complex, expensive, and rigid molds that are traditionally associated with composites. Through a bottom-up iterative method, material and structure are explored in an integrative design process. This culminates in a lightweight FlexFlax Stool design (ca. 1 kg), which can carry approximately 80 times its weight, articulated in a new material-based design tectonic.

Purpose Literature on organizational analysis identified that project participants have a certain impact on the project outcome. However, there is no study that identifies the impact of project teams and individual project participants on a green building project. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of green building project teams on green building certification. Design/methodology/approach Project information, project team information, and green building certification grade were collected using the Canadian green building database. Project team data were analyzed and organizations were ranked based on their green building project experience and collaborations with experienced green building organizations. The page rank algorithm is used to calculate the rank of organizations in order to identify the impact of organizational rank on the final green building certification grade of a project. Findings The results show a positive relationship between the green building certification grade and the number of organizations with more green building experience in a project team. The results also show that not having experienced key organizations such as owners, designers, and contractors will likely lead to a lower green building certification grade. Originality/value Impact of project teams on green building projects has not been studied before. This study used an innovative method to analyze green building project teams and to investigate the importance of green building project experience. Streszczenie:
In recent years, with the country’s vigorous promotion of green buildings and the increasingly complex and large-scale engineering projects, the design-construction consortium model can better meet the needs of the organization and implementation of large-scale green projects and become a realistic choice for enterprises in project implementation. Therefore, the formation of a good and stable cooperative relationship between consortium members is increasingly important in improving project revenue and quality. The issue of maintaining the stability of consortium relationships is an urgent problem to be solved at this stage. As such, a three-party evolutionary game model, based on evolutionary game theory, comprising the developer unit, design unit, and construction unit, is constructed here. Then, strategies for ensuring evolutionary stability under different design modalities are discussed. Finally, the influence of relevant parameters under changing design conditions on the stability of the design and construction consortium of green building projects is analyzed through numerical simulation. The research results show the following: (1) If the additional revenue distribution coefficient within the consortium members is closer to 0.5, the influence on the stability of the design and construction consortium will be smaller; in contrast, if the influence on the design and construction consortium is increased, the cooperative relationship within the consortium will be more unstable. (2) The presence of additional revenue ∆π1 can increase the stability of the design and construction consortium. An increase in the additional revenue ∆π1 will inhibit the instability of the consortium on the one hand and strengthen the stability of the consortium on the other but will also lead to the occurrence of opportunistic behavior. (3) The construction unit’s payment of a subsidy to the cooperative members can help promote the stability of the design and construction consortium to a certain extent and can also weaken the effects of other factors on the stability of the consortium, but there is a threshold value for the amount of said subsidy. (4) On the one hand, the cooperation members actively cooperate with each other to maximize the cooperation benefits of the design and construction consortium, while on the other hand, the construction unit actively promotes the implementation of the green building project, strictly monitors the implementation of the green design and green construction approach by the design and construction units in the early and implementation stages of the project, prevents the design changes caused by the final product failing to meet the green building standard, and actively solves design change problems in a manner that benefits the sustainable development of the green building, so that the cooperative relationship among the members of the consortium can develop steadily, which is beneficial to the green and ecological development of architectural design and construction.

Green planning is critically important during the design phases of construction projects but continually gets less attention during construction. Project owners and planners need to understand how communication influences green implementation. To address a gap in the extant research, this paper presents the evaluation results on how sustainability awareness of field supervision personnel impacts the successful completion of school projects by proving that communicating sustainability goals with them is vital for decision-making during the construction stage of the project. This paper uses data collected from 162 new school construction projects to compare sustainability design goals with their successful incorporation into completed projects. Seventy-one project managers and inspectors were surveyed to assess their awareness of key high-performance sustainability requirements that were built into the designs. The responses from these two groups were compared to examine the positive or negative impacts. The analysis results show that early and continuous communication of sustainability design goals with field supervision personnel has a significant impact on whether those goals are realized when the project is turned over to the owner for occupancy. Successful implementation of sustainability goals not only provides economic benefits from fully exploiting life-cycle costs, but also holds the promise of providing a healthier working environment.

This project evaluates green roofs as a stormwater management tool. The goal of the project is to develop a computer aided stormwater model incorporating green roof, and evaluate its effectiveness. Specifically, the influence of media type, media depth, duration of rainfall event and average reoccurrence interval are investigated in design rainfall. The finalised model is then validated based on observed rainfall for the months of January and February of 2014. Results indicate that the green roofs are capable of removing 73.5% and 86.9% of the monthly rainfall volumes for January and February 2014, respectively, from a roof through retention. Water retention by green roofs effectively increases the time to reach the peak runoff, and slows the peak flows for a watershed. There are seasonal considerations as more runoff is generated during the month of January (northeast monsoon season) compared with the month of February (normal weather). Green roof is also effective in retaining 100% of several storms of less than 10 mm. The results demonstrate that the proposed extensive green roof for the study area functions as an excellent bio-retention system for stormwater control. The results of this research are in tandem with those of other researches performed throughout the world on hydrologic characteristics of green roof.

Abstract Accelerated mineral carbonation is a promising CO2 sequestration technology that is strongly linked to concepts of sustainability and Green Chemistry, and its process requirements apply principles of reaction kinetics, transport phenomena, and materials characterization. The present work aimed to develop educational tools for including accelerated mineral carbonation in chemical engineering curricula. To this end, an experimental investigation laboratory procedure and a design project outline have been conceived. As a way to further engage students in this learning experience, the process conditions for the laboratory work are varied between groups of students, and the experimental data obtained are pooled to be used by every group for the subsequent design exercise. This is meant to give students motivation to generate accurate data that they knew would be useful for the entire class and, at the same time, provide students with the opportunity to use data generated by colleagues, much in the same way the design work is done in the industry. In the design project, students use the experimental data obtained by themselves and classmates on the accelerated mineral carbonation of wollastonite, to determine if this is a feasible process for industry to sequester carbon dioxide, in view of mitigating climate change. Also, they use the experimental data, acquired using a range of process conditions, to study the effect of the process variables (CO2 pressure and mixing rate) on the carbonation kinetics and mass transfer rate. The focus of our previously published article was on the experimental investigation, while the focus of this conference paper is on the design project.

The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), a 6 GeV green-field diffraction-limited storage ring light source, will be built in Beijing, China. The HEPS design has been evolving for about ten years, and is now mostly finished and ready for construction. The storage ring is based on a modified hybrid seven-bend achromat (7BA) design, where bending magnets with reverse bending angles and longitudinal gradients are adopted to reach an ultralow natural emittance of 34.2 pm with a circumference of 1360.4 m. The central slice of the dipole in the middle of the modified hybrid 7BA, with flexible magnetic field, is used as the source of the bending-magnet beamline. Moreover, alternating high- and low-beta sections are specially designed to generate and deliver X-ray synchrotron radiation with high brightness of 5 × 1022 photons s−1 mm−2 mrad−2 (0.1% bandwidth)−1. Here, the HEPS storage ring design and solutions to the challenges inherent in this ultralow-emittance design are presented.

The construction industry environment nowadays is becoming more complex with more issues to be resolved with the agreeable approaches amongst the team. Nevertheless, the Building Information Modelling (BIM) innovation is acknowledged to disentangle those prevalent issues towards delivering a better project performance. With the emergence of BIM technology, various concerns such as constant errors and reworks, team-miscommunication, construction waste, energy inefficiencies, and many more in the industry practices, could be refined. Specifically, BIM capabilities mainly facilitate the design and construction operations. Albeit the processes involved demand an early planning and profound decision-making, the BIM mechanism helps the project team to execute the proposed construction projects effectively. With regards to maintaining the sustainability in the industry, “Green BIM” term is introduced to describe the manipulation of BIM technology to be incorporated along with the sustainable design and construction techniques. Therefore, this paper reviews the potentials of “Green BIM” in improving the traditional practices of project stakeholders throughout the project life cycle, particularly focusing on the design and construction phases. It discusses the previous studies on “Green BIM”, “Green BIM” concepts, and “Green BIM” approaches concerning its benefits and challenges in enhancing the construction industry practices. Significantly, through the appropriate “Green BIM” resolution, the procedures initiated with the green settings and completed with the green requirements, could empower more sustainable construction industry

A conservatory is both a tourism center and a place for plant preservation in which it is considered to be able to respond to both of the problems that Medan is facing, which are lack of feasibility of tourism and green space. With its function, the design aims to improve Medan tourism as well as to provide green space for the local community. The method used in designing this project is data collection through field surveys and literature studies. The location of the project is at Kualanamu Region as the need for the development of a tourism center in Kualanamu district as for the enhancement of the tourism becomes the busiest airport in Sumatera Utara. To reflect the concept of the conservatory, the theme of the project is futuristic architecture. As a large scale glass house, the main problem of the design is how to maintain the air temperature stable inside the building. The idea is to replace the use of glass with ETFE Panel, which is made from plastic and weighing only 1% of the glass. The project site is located near the river to support the green space concept. With various approaches towards design, this project is expected to be able to provide new opportunities for Medan tourism.

Blue-green architecture entails buildings that contribute to improving the urban climate through the synergetic combination of water management and vegetation. They are part of an urban blue-green infrastructure network that combines ecosystem services in a multifunctional way. Projects implemented in an interdisciplinary manner create synergies with regard to the combination of water-related and vegetation-related objectives. However, applicable design strategies for this approach are currently lacking in practice. This paper investigates the approach of a blue-green architectural project in Stuttgart (the so called “Impulse Project”) and derives insights for an integrated design strategy. The analysis and transfer of the research is carried out by using the research by design methodology. For this purpose, the interdisciplinary design process is divided into three phases (pre-design, design, post-design) and described in detail. Reflection on the documented design reveals the knowledge gained and enables the transfer of the findings to future projects by means of the integrated design strategy for blue-green architecture.

In 1834 the rector of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Burlington, New Jersey desired to place a cross atop his newly-refurbished sanctuary. No ordinary rector, George Washington Doane also served as the Episcopal bishop of New Jersey. Shortly after taking charge of St. Mary's in 1833, he and his vestry had decided to renovate their old church, and their ambitious new design featured a cruciform plan with Greek details, including a pediment adorned with lotus leaves and a tower “derived from that built at Athens… commonly called the Tower of the Winds.” But when Doane carried out the plans for “an enriched Greek Cross” to be mounted on the roof, the community stood aghast. A local Presbyterian minister chronicled the confrontation, and he began by asserting that most of St. Mary's vestrymen had originally approved the designs without “noticing the Cross at the time.” The project was thus completed, and to the vestry's “great surprise, as well as that of many in the community, of all ‘denominations’—lo! a Cross made quite a Catholic appearance on the apex of the pediment!” Controversy arose, “both in the Vestry and out of it,” and “after a very warm meeting, one of the Vestry shortly after declared that unless the Cross was taken down very soon, it should be pulled down.”

Background The Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert-Ultra) assay provides timely results with good sensitivity and acceptable specificity with stool specimens in children for bacteriological confirmation of tuberculosis (TB). This study aims to optimize the Simple One-Step (SOS) stool processing method for testing stool specimens using the Xpert-Ultra in children and adults in selected health facilities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study is designed to assess the robustness of the SOS stool method, to help fine-tune the practical aspects of performing the test and to provide insights in stool storage conditions and sampling strategies before the method can be implemented and scaled in routine settings in Ethiopia as well as globally. Methods and design The project “painless optimized diagnosis of TB in Ethiopian children” (PODTEC) will be a cross sectional study where three key experiments will be carried out focusing on 1) sampling strategy to investigate if the Xpert-Ultra M. tuberculosis (MTB) -positivity rate depends on stool consistency, and if sensitivity can be increased by taking more than one stool specimen from the same participant, or doing multiple tests from the same stool specimen, 2) storage conditions to determine how long and at what temperature stool can be stored without losing sensitivity, and 3) optimization of sensitivity and robustness of the SOS stool processing method by varying stool processing steps, stool volume, and storage time and conditions of the stool-sample reagent mixture. Stool specimens will be collected from participants (children and adults) who are either sputum or naso-gastric aspiration (NGA) and/or stool Xpert-Ultra MTB positive depending on the experiment. Stool specimens from these participants, recruited from 22 sites for an ongoing related study, will be utilized for the PODTEC experiments. The sample size is estimated to be 50 participants. We will use EpiData for data entry and Stata for data analysis purposes. The main analyses will include computing the loss or gain in the Xpert-Ultra MTB positivity rate and rates of non-determinate Xpert-Ultra test results per experiment compared to the Xpert-Ultra MTB result of stool processed according to the published standard operating procedures for SOS stool processing. The differences in the MTB positivity rate by regarding testing more than one sample per child, and using different storage, and processing conditions, will be also compared to the baseline (on-site) Xpert-Ultra result.

Services surrounding green buildings are specialised and directed towards the process of design and comprise comprehensive and quantified management in its entirety. Implicitly, consultancies are unable to deliver this service at the standard and pace required in the preliminary stages of design, and not all clients or consultants will require the services to be essential. The main aim is to stabilise the several characteristics prompting one another to optimise design performance against the optimisation algorithms. Green Star is a universal evaluation tool, assessing not only green characteristics but also elements that influence wellbeing and occupant health, such as indoor environment quality. The tools for Green Star rating can be used to measure the green features of a building from the design phase right to the stage of site handover (known as “As-Built”). This paper refers, in the literature review, to the passive and low-energy design methods of a Green Star-rated building at early design stages. The “green” project management of a project is to coordinate multidisciplinary incorporation and to accompany the costing contribution tools presented in this paper. The passive and low-energy design tools discussed entails the amalgamation of electrical and mechanical services together with architecture, i.e., space layout and envelope design. This paper compares rationalised energy and indoor environment performance between two buildings against the activities and climatic conditions within a targeted Green Star-rated building. Proposals regarding 4- and 6-star ratings and techniques have been evaluated and presented for the two buildings.
