Streszczenie:
A total of 616 burials were uncovered in 583 graves of the cemetery investigated in 2002, 2009–2010 and 2013. The burial ground is unusual in that the small, narrow valley lying north of road 71 on the outskirts of Balatonudvari was used during several periods. The site’s upper layer contained west to east oriented burials from the tenth–eleventh centuries, underneath which lay north to south oriented burials from the middle and late avar period. Some grave pits of the avar period had been repeatedly re-used and we documented several superimposed burials. The two unusual, rare finds presented and discussed here came to light in the cemetery’s northern part: a braid comb from grave 309 and a woodworking adze from grave 516, both part of the eastern heritage of the avar population.

The article presents the results of an analysis of a grave from the late 10th century or the early 11th century, discovered in an early medieval cemetery in Bodzia in the eastern Kujawy region. The grave: unique not only by the cemetery’s standards, included, among other things, an oak club fitted in two bronze sheets. Comparative materials allow for interpreting it as the so-called insignia club (a kind of mace). It was an attribute of power used in medieval Europe at least since the 11th century by members of the highest secular and clerical elites, e.g. during armed expeditions. The preserved funeral inventory of the grave where the “club” was found indicates that a layman was buried there. Comparative materials used in the Bodzia find, also with respect to the function, is provided by the Bayeux Tapestry (northern France) woven in the 2nd half of the 11th century and presenting the battle of Hastings in1066.

Cemetery 1400–1500 at Armant, excavated by Mond and Myers in the 1930s, is the best-recorded Predynastic cemetery in Egypt. With burials dating to Nagada I, II, and III, the cemetery provides data for a crucial period of social evolution in Egypt. Quantitative methods of analysis show that both mean grave size and mean number of grave goods increase through time. Although clusters of graves show differentiation into two basic hierarchies of grave types, there is a lack of overall complexity in the Armant burials, probably indicative of a society which was not very stratified.

In her long poem Calgary, This Growing Graveyard, Aritha van Herk presents the cemetery as a public garden of critical reflection within the rapidly changing urban environment of Calgary, Alberta. Foregrounding the simultaneous processes of growth and decay, van Herk suggests that the cemetery as garden becomes symbolic not only of the city’s successive generations, but also of the ongoing creation, destruction, and recreation of the city’s physical-cultural landscape. First published in 1987, Calgary, This Growing Graveyard captures the “boom and bust” economy of Calgary following the implementation of Canada’s National Energy Program in 1980. Now in 2007, van Herk’s poem turns prophetic as Calgarians experience the growing pains that coincide with a lucrative economy, mass migration, and urban sprawl.

Cemetery is one of the space requirements that also needs to be considered in urban management. Because apart from burial activities, burial grounds can also function as urban green open spaces. Private Cemetery Parks (TPBU) currently have not received the attention of stakeholders, especially in urban areas. As a result, many TPBUs are not well organized in terms of management, location, and access to available facilities. South Tangerang City has approximately 150 TPBU whose ownership and management are carried out by social/community institutions. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of private cemetery (TPBU) including management, location, land use, road network, funeral service coverage, funeral facilities, and infrastructure. The research method used is data collection through observation and interviews with grave managers. After that, descriptive analysis was carried out on several criteria, namely location and accessibility, status, and management of the cemetry, and available facilities. The results of this study also explore strategies for TPBU funeral management including the management system, as well as infrastructure that needs to be considered in the management of TPBU funerals in South Tangerang City.

For example, another burial in the same cemetery also contained some, confirming the assumption that these coins with a moon-and-star and crescent reverse served as amulets.

Naxos, the largest of the Cycladic islands, offers a nuanced insight into Iron Age funerary behaviour in the Cyclades and relations between social groups as reflected in the archaeological record. The focus of this paper is the cemetery of Tsikalario in the hinterland of the island, with emphasis on two burial contexts which exhibit a range of activities related to funerary ceremonies and the consumption of grave-offerings. The grave-tumuli found in the Tsikalario cemetery comprise a mortuary ‘phenomenon’ not found otherwise on Naxos during the Early Iron Age. Such a differentiation in mortuary practice can be interpreted as a strategy used by the people of inland Naxos to distinguish their funerary habits from the more typical Naxian practices of, for example, the inhabitants of the coastal Naxos harbour town. This distinctive funerary practice can speak in favour of an attempt by the kinship group(s) that buried their deceased in the cemetery of Tsikalario to articulate status and identity. Beyond these tumuli, evidence from a different type of grave context at Tsikalario – Cist Grave 11 and its vicinity (Burial Context 11) – offers an additional example of a well-thought-out staging of funerary beliefs in the inland region of Naxos. Not only does it illustrate the coexistence of other types of burials in the cemetery, but, alongside the tumuli and their finds, it also demonstrates, through the symbolic package of the grave-offerings and the multifaceted network of interactions they reveal, that inland Naxos participated in the intra- and supra-island circulation of wares and ideas.

Streszczenie:
Although historical documents and texts tell us otherwise, it is generally believed, not only by people without the expertise to know better, that nobody lived to what we would consider to be old age in the distant past. While it is certainly true that fewer individuals reached their allotted three score years and ten, most communities would have had people who lived to their seventies, eighties or even nineties. It is not that the elderly didn’t exist, it is that the methods used to identify and age people in the past, combined with current attitudes, have rendered them invisible. This thesis seeks to examine the implications on life, both social and physical, of living to old age in Early Anglo-Saxon England. To do this, elderly individuals first need to be made visible and identified. For this purpose then, an approach that identifies the invisible elderly in a cemetery context is proposed, illustrated with an Anglo-Saxon cemetery example. Subsequently, the elderly in three Early Anglo-Saxon cemeteries are examined: Great Chesterford, Essex; Mill Hill, Deal, Kent; Worthy Park, Kingsworthy, Hampshire. The graves of the individuals buried in these cemeteries, their grave goods and their skeletal remains are discussed and elderly people are compared to those younger to determine whether old age increased their relative status, decreased it, or whether it remained the same. Whether sex or its close relative gender had an effect on these determinations is also explored. A case study involving two elderly women concludes this thesis. In general, it is found that while the elderly are not a homogenous group, some evidence for respect is found, as well as some lesser treatment, and that the elderly are treated similarly in death to younger cohorts. In contrast, when examined through the lens of sex, it was found that males, fewer of whom reach the oldest age categories, tend to increase their status with age, while the status of females appears to decline from about the age of about thirty. The two women in the case study, who were given somewhat less than average burial treatment, may have been the last pagans in the community.

The main objective of this study is to research the components of the universal imaginary that represents death and how this imaginary reverberates in the reports and the content of the dreams of grave-diggers in five cemeteries in the city of Sao Paulo. By imaginary, we mean the "connector" between the internal and external environments of human beings, through the symbolic and imagistic language. Our hypothesis was based on the possible existence of an archetypical imaginary of death, with elements that transpose historic moments. We also assume that, because grave-diggers work directly with the grossly material side of death the visual impact of the corpse, the dirt and the smell of the decomposing body and because they play an important role in the painful rite that the deceased one´s family goes through, they would be exposed to an intense unconscious experience of feelings related to death, in contrast to apparent posture of denial. We tried to investigate this intensity of emotional contents through semi-directed interviews and questionnaires, looking for reports of beliefs and feelings about dying. We also heard reports of dreams, which supported the presence of emotion-laden imaginary elements related to death, as well as archetypical contents in different cultures, as had been originally hyppothesized. We worked with grave-diggers of the Araçá, Consolação, Lapa, Vila Mariana and Vila Nova Cachoeirinha cemeteries

Lately Athena has been spending all her spare time in her grave. Her parents—owners of a small-town cemetery in upstate New York—are proud of her devoutness, but her little sister, Laurel, can’t understand it. Laurel still has one more year before her grave-opening, before she’s expected to fulfill the Tenets of Grave Keeping by spending time in her grave as well, and she’s dreading it. Just as school begins, unexpected visitors derail the girls’ secluded lives, encroaching on the safe confines of home and forcing the sisters out into the town. Athena—a professional high school loner—grapples with a newfound enemy and, even more surprising, her first best friend. And home-schooled Laurel, shy to the point of paralysis, finds herself face-to-face with a runaway kid, hiding out in an abandoned grave.

This catalogue documents Roman lamps from the cemeteries of Gerulata (modern-day Rusovce). It consists of 16 Bildlapmen, 89 Firmalampen, and one special shape. These lamps were found mainly in two large cemeteries, in both cremation and inhumation graves, dated from the last decades of the 1 st century AD to the dawn of the 3rd century. Of the Bildlampen, several lamps with angular voluted nozzles (Loeschcke type I) and one fragment of a circular lamp with a rounded nozzle (Loeschcke type VIII) are represented. Of the Firmalampen, both Loeschcke types IX and X are found, type X and its variations being the most numerous (67 lamps). The iconography of relief decorations shows a range of mythological and profane images. Twenty different makers' stamps in relief are found, two without parallels, with Fortis as most common. The production, transport and copying of Firmalampen is described; resulting endeavors to locate their point of origin are determined to be often unreliable without chemical analysis. Both the relationship of lamps to other grave goods as well as their purpose in graves are assessed; lamps are found to have been an available luxury, as appropriate in a Romanized society. Most lamps had worn bases, and some had blackened wickholes; most are burned by their inclusion in the funeral pyre. The...

Streszczenie:
AbstractMigration, intercultural encounters and integration do not cease with death, but are taken with the deceased into cemetery grounds. This chapter explores the translocal dimension of cemeteries, where diverse expectations and practices are confronted by, engage with and respond to regulations and unwritten rules of this particular public space. This chapter looks at migrants who wish to be buried or have buried close kin or friends in Luxembourg, a small country in Northwestern Europe. Disposition of the dead in the host country instead of post-mortal repatriation is often seen as sign of integration or belonging. However, this choice must be understood in the context of a set of constraints that can be experienced in a variety of ways. Examining three contested issues at cemeteries (burial practices, cemetery and grave design, and grave perpetuity), we show how both the regulations and unwritten rules of cemeteries are negotiated and challenged by individual migrants and migrant communities, highlighting different practices of lived citizenship. Based on participant experiences and narratives, we argue for the necessity of valuing and managing cemeteries, less as bounded spaces that can foster integration during life and after, but as permeable and transformative contact zones in which translocal citizenship can be enacted.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis study aims to broaden the scope of attention paid to multicultural societies in existing migration and mobilities literature, through expanding on the topic of spatial design, planning and management of contemporary cemeteries in light of increasing multiculturalism. The chapter explores how national judicial acts and practices facilitate or hinder inclusion of minorities’ needs and the existing local level measures in three Scandinavian towns to safeguard the needs of minorities in cemeteries and crematoria. The empirical data consists of analysis of legislative acts and qualitative interviews with 28 stakeholders in three medium/large-sized towns. As will be shown, Swedish and Norwegian burial acts share many similarities – for example, both acknowledge the need to meet particular burial and cremation needs for people not belonging to the Christian church. Differences mainly relate to how religion and belief communities are involved in the development of cemeteries. Through the interviews, we extract a nuanced picture of how individual towns work with ‘multiculturalism’ by elaborating on the following components that emerged from the analysis: presence of diversity, accommodation of various needs, cooperation with minorities, and reflections over special grave areas or cemetery sections for minorities. This study’s comparative outlook informs current debates on migration and mobilities and further sheds light on the specific inputs for forming policies and practices aiming at facilitating a multicultural approach when designing, planning and managing cemeteries and crematoria.

Streszczenie:
The theoretical framework for this work is based on W.E.B. DuBois’s concept of “double consciousness” outlined in The Souls of Black Folk, 1903. This concept helps portray the transition from African-derived burial treatments in this urban cemetery for blacks to grave treatments that were less distinct from those in the cemeteries for whites. Archaeologically evidence of these grave treatments can be seen through time. Though most archaeological research in urban contexts is focused on cemeteries, a significant difference in this case is the focus on the cultural landscape within the cemetery space. The author’s familiarity with Bahamian historical and cultural heritage enables her to make a case for identifying an African-derived cemetery landscape. This urban cemetery site is an illustration of the variation in experiences within the African diaspora in the Americas.

Streszczenie:
This chapter offers some remarks on Leszek Hońdo's study of the old Jewish cemetery in Kraków. For centuries, the old Jewish cemetery in Kraków has attracted the special attention of researchers on Jewish antiquity and pious pilgrims to holy grave sites, as well as ordinary travellers and the simply curious. Recently, the need for a detailed inventory of the grave sites has become ever more urgent, particularly with the pace of erosion of the headstones. Following the publication by earlier historians of several incomplete descriptions of the cemetery in Kraków, Leszek Hońdo took a full inventory between 1994 and 1997. On the basis of this work, he has published a volume entitled Stary żydowski cmentarz w Krakówie: Historia cmentarza, analiza hebrajskich inskrypcji (The Old Jewish Cemetery in Kraków: History of the Cemetery with Analysis of the Hebrew Inscriptions). The chapter then reviews Hońdo's work, discussing the wider methodological issues arising in the analysis and description of Jewish cemeteries.

Streszczenie:
The article represents the results of archaeological digs of a Barrow № 2 (a cultural heritage object) belonging to the «Ak-Monai 1» Barrow Group situated in the Tavrida road construction area. A research area was 1534 square meters. Exploration revealed 13 simple ditch graves, mostly supplied with slab ceilings. 12 graves were initially covered with a burial mound; only one grave was placed inside a burial mound in antiquity. It was noticed that a burial mound had not been formed with a very first grave, but had been constructed by adding new graves to the cemetery, which was a common practice in Early Bronze Age. After completing of several burials a territory was leveled out to the extent possible, in some places it was windrowed. Digs of a Barrow № 2 enabled us to trace and analyze some funeral rite’s peculiarities, especially concerning children’s burials, and to give a cultural and chronological characteristic to the whole Barrow Group, attributing it to the late stage of a Pit Grave Culture.

There are a lot of pirs in the south-eastern region of Azerbaijan that continue the traditions of Sheikh Zahid and in which prominent Sufis of that period have been buried. Most of them are linked to the tekke of Ardabil. It is known that Sheik Jamaladdin was a pir of Sheik Zahid Gilani. At present his grave is located at the cemetery of the village of Pensar (Butasar) that is on the Lankaran-Astara highway. The grave is called “The pir of Sayyid Jamaladdin” and is a large place of worship. The mausoleum (turbe) of Sheikh Zahid and the monuments linked to it are ones of the monuments that demonstrate the principal role of the sheikh of Ardabil in the spread of sufism in the south-eastern region, including Shirvan. The pir of Sheikh Zahid is one of the most sacred places in the south-eastern region. The pir of Sayyid Ahmad is one of the most famous pirs that reflects the traditions of Sheik Zahid. This pir is located in the forest at the right side of the Lankaran-Astara highway, at the cemetery of the village of Mashkhan. One more pir that reflects the traditions of Sheikh Zahid is the mausoleum of Abi-Darda that is situated between the two villages of Yardymly – Larzan and Arsila. The mausoleum is known as Abuzara, Abudarza, Abidarza, Abazarda and Abidarda. The pir of Babagil that is located near the village of Babagil is one of the famous places of worship in the south-eastern region. The article is aimed to publish the field research results of 2013–2015 in the southern section of the necropolis of the ancient settlement «Belinskoye» in the eastern Crimea. The burials and other objects discovered here show that the southern section of the necropolis of the ancient settlement «Belinskoye» functioned at least from the second half of the 2nd to the 4th cc. AD and also in the Saltov period. The paper pays special attention to analyze the earliest burials with slots for overlapping in long grave walls. The only analogue burials of this type are now the earliest burials at the cemetery Neyzats located in the central part of the Crimean foothills. Having analyzed currently available material, the author comes to the conclusion on the existence of a separate group of Sarmat mercenaries in the 2nd century AD, during the active expansion of the Bosporan kingdom.

The paper presents results of the excavations at the Viking Age burial site Gnezdilovo conducted in 2020. Gnezdilovo local area is known in medieval archaeology as a prominent place with the barrow burial ground first discovered in 1851 and the dwelling site with Late Viking Age cultural deposits, one of the local centers of Suzdal’ region, which had been under excavations in 1980-87. Non of the burial mounds survived in the landscape after the excavation campaign of 1851 which disclosed 28 barrows with cremations and inhumations (28) and appeared to leave poor perspectives for further research. Burial site, totally leveled by ploughing, was re-discovered in 2019. Trail excavations at the area of about 120 sq.m revealed 15 west-oriented inhumation burials in ground pits and remains of cremations dispersed in ploughed deposits and in pits. 8 inhumation burials contained grave goods - glass beads, temple rings, pendants, belt mounts, dirham coin and denarius, iron knives. Of special interest is burial 13 with a battleaxe placed at the feet of the deceased. Inhumation burials date the XI-th - the early XII-th cc. New field research at the site prove that Gnezdilovo was a large cemetery with diverse burial rituals (barrows with cremations and inhumations, cremations in shallow ground pits, inhumations in ground pits). Considerable part of the graves remains well preserved after the excavations conducted in the XIX-th c.
