Streszczenie:
The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for geometrical correction (rectification) of the satellite imagery aims to establish the relation between the image coordinate system and the GPS readout coordinate system. By using this technique, the errors existing within satellite image can be calibrated and reduced as well. This paper introduces application of Geographical Information System (GIS) and image processing software in addition to GPS for measuring the coordinates of waypoints to be as ground control points (GCPs) for the geometrical correction process of the QuickBird satellite image for the adopted study area (Mosul City). For comparison purpose, the geodetic rectification process was also done for the adopted QuickBird satellite image with respect to the IKONOS imagery. Due to the low standards in the geometric design characteristics of the road which badly affected the GPS measurements, the output results show that the geodetic rectification of the QuickBird imagery with respect to IKONOS satellite image gives more accuracy of results than GCP acquired by GPS. The overall procedure applied in the present study shows the ability to give an improvement in the positional accuracy of an already georeferenced coordinate system of the QuickBird image which in turn gives a higher accuracy of the GPS tracking path for the purpose of mapping, urban planning, cartography, survey and other GIS applications .

Background:Global positioning systems (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS), and accelerometers are powerful tools to explain activity within a built environment, yet little integration of these tools has taken place. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of combining GPS, GIS, and accelerometry to understand transport-related physical activity (TPA) in adults. Methods:Forty adults wore an accelerometer and portable GPS unit over 7 consecutive days and completed a demographics questionnaire and 7-day travel log. Accelerometer and GPS data were extracted for commutes to/from workplace and integrated into a GIS database. GIS maps were generated to visually explore physical activity intensity, GPS speeds and routes traveled. Results:GPS, accelerometer, and survey data were collected for 37 participants. Loss of GPS data was substantial due to a range of methodological issues, such as low battery life, signal drop out, and participant noncompliance. Nonetheless, greater travel distances and significantly higher speeds were observed for motorized trips when compared with TPA.Conclusions:Pragmatic issues of using GPS monitoring to understand TPA behaviors and methodological recommendations for future research were identified. Although methodologically challenging, the combination of GPS monitoring, accelerometry and GIS technologies holds promise for understanding TPA within the built environment.

This paper reviews the basics of GPS and GIS technology and describes their application for locating trees in rural park and forest settings. During a hazard tree survey in a Massachusetts state park, project members investigated the feasibility of using GPS and GIS to create maps that highlighted individual trees and other landmarks. The project intended to show that GPS and GIS can accurately locate trees. This technology is especially useful for arborists and urban foresters who need to map trees in rural parks, along rural roads and trails, and on large estates and institutional land, where other location methods are impractical. Depending on a variety of circumstances, GPS and GIS can be used in combination with aerial photographs or standard line and symbol maps to create appropriate tree maps for a particular area. Although certain problems still hinder the mapping process, new technology developments will expedite using GPS and GIS to produce maps.

Global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technologies are at the cutting edge of an emerging agricultural revolution called site-specific management. Anticipated benefits are both economic and environmental because in this system, herbicides, fertilizers and other inputs are placed only where needed in the precise amounts required. The opportunities for site-specific management of crops, soils, and pests are innumerable. However, most students of agriculture and land resource sciences have little, if any, experience with the GPS and GIS technologies that provide these new opportunities. Beginning in 1995, efforts were undertaken to integrate GPS/GIS technology into the College of Agriculture curriculum. The process began with GPS/GIS training workshops for local and regional faculty. Key faculty modified curriculum within several departmental options and produced instructional modules for 12 different agriculture science courses. Experiential learning opportunities were developed and in some classes, farmer practitioners of site-specific management participated with students in identifying management problems and solutions. Instructional modules and active learning exercises were formally evaluated as to their effects on enhanced student decisionmaking skills and competency in GPS/GIS applications. Recently the new course LRES 357 “GPS/GIS Applications” was added to the curriculum and work is underway to place this course on-line.

The relevance. The article considers the monitoring of geodynamic deformations of the territory of Azerbaijan according to the data of GPS stations (Global Positioning System). The identification of changes in the velocities of tectonic blocks is the basis for the construction of geodynamic models that allow establishing a connection with the tectonic-geological structure of the region under study. The aim of the work was geodetic analysis and comparison of the results of GPS stations with the seismicity of the region under study, obtained for the period 2017-2021 on the territory of Azerbaijan. Methods. The article presents a method for calculating the velocity fields of modern horizontal displacements of the tectonic blocks of Azerbaijan, obtained from the results of observations at 24 GPS_RCSS stationary stations, a characteristic aspect of which is a noticeable horizontal displacement in the northeast direction at a rate of 4–12 mm/y. In the study, mainly two space-time modes were applied: calculation of the initial coordinates of the stations of the geodetic network and the calculation of the shear deformation compared to the original. In this article, the velocity field of tectonic blocks on the territory of Azerbaijan was studied based on the results of GPS measurements calculated using the GAMIT program. (Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Based on the results calculated using the GAMIT (Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)) program, the velocities of individual tectonic structures within the study region were obtained. Results. To identify the gradient zones of velocity change, the azimuthal directions of the velocity vectors of the horizontal movements of the territories of Turkey and Iran, obtained on the UNAVCO website (a consortium of the NAVSTAR University), were also taken into account. Work results. Thus, it was obtained that along the central part and in the southwest of the country, in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the border regions of Iran, compression oriented to the NE prevails. The maximum value of the strain rate throughout the territory of Azerbaijan fluctuates within 17 mm/y. Analysis of the velocity field also showed low velocity values in the Greater Caucasus (4-6 mm/y). In addition, a correlation analysis of the value of velocities with the seismic activity of the region was carried out. It is concluded that there is a certain relationship between the change in velocity of horizontal displacement of blocksand the distribution of strong earthquakes in the field of the rate of deformation of the earth's crust. At GPS stations Nardaran (NRDG), Gobu, Gala (GALG) and Jiloy Island (JLVG), which enter the Absheron zone, are tracked almost the same as the values of horizontal displacements of 4.7 mm / 4.0 mm / 4.0 mm., 5 mm / year 4.9 mm / year respectively). In the direction of the Talysh region up to the Absheron Peninsula (in the direction of SW-NE) there is a noticeable decrease in the northern components change in the rate of displacements compared to the values of the (LKRG=14.9 mm/y, GLBG=19.8 mm/y, YRDG= 13.0 mm/y).

Streszczenie:
Traditional travel survey methods have been widely used for collecting information about urban mobility although Global Position System (GPS) has become an automatic option for collecting more precise data of the households since mid-1990s. Many studies on mobility patterns have focused on the GPS advantages leaving aside its issues such as the quality of the data collected. However, when it comes to extract the frequency of the trips and travelled distance, this technology faces some gaps due to the related issues such as signal reception and time-to-first-fix location that turns out in missing observations and respectively unrecognised or over-segmented trips. In this study, we focus on two aspects of GPS data for a car-mode, (i) measurement of the gaps in the travelled distance and (ii) estimation of the travelled distance and the factors that influence the GPS gaps. To asses that, GPS tracks are compared to a ground truth source. Additionally, the trips are analysed based on the land use (e.g. urban and rural areas) and length (e.g. short, medium and long trips). Results from 170 participants and more than a year of GPStracking show that around 9 % of the travelled distance is not captured by GPS and it affects more short trips than long ones. Moreover, we validate the importance of the time spent on the user activity and the land use as factors that influence the gaps in GPS.

Methods and challenges of GPS/GIS integration are discussed, and an application integrating GPS naturalistic driving data from Southeast Michigan together with GIS data from several sources is demonstrated. The integrated dataset is used to explore connections between the built environment and driving behavior, specifically between business concentration, driving speed, vehicle stops and rear-end crashes. Driving speed, an important determinant of driver behavior linked to traffic safety, is found to be inversely related to business concentration, a pattern that does not vary by time of day. Rear-end crashes are found to increase with vehicle stops which increase with business concentration. This demonstration showed that fusing GPS and GPS data provides spatial intelligence which can be used to address planning, traffic safety, and transportation related issues.

Streszczenie:
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are now in use in many applications, ranging from GIS to route guidance, automatic vehicle location (AVL), air, land, and marine navigation, and many other transportation and geographical based applications. In many applications, the GPS receiver is connected to some form of intelligent electronic system which receives the positional data from the GPS unit and then performs the required operation. When developing and testing GPS-based systems, one of the problems is that it is usually necessary to create GPS-compatible geographical data to simulate a GPS operation in real time. This paper provides the details of a Personal Computer (PC)-based GPS simulator system called GPSIM. The system receives user way-points and routes from Windows-based screen forms and then simulates a GPS operation in real time by generating most of the commonly used GPS sentences. The user-specified waypoints are divided into a number of small segments, each segment specifying a small distance in the direction of the original waypoint. The GPS sentence corresponding to the geographical coordinates of each segment is then sent out of the PC serial port. The system described is an invaluable testing tool for GPS-based system developers and also for people training to learn to use GPS-based products.

Streszczenie:
GPS modules have been used for various applications in recent years. Its early development came in parallel with the advancement of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology. Nowadays, it is also used in in geographic information system (GIS) data acquisition/census, mapping surveys, structure stability monitoring systems and many other applications. GPS modules generally have several positioning features, including standard positioning service (SPS), static positioning, precise point positioning (PPP), post processing kinematic (PPK) and real time kinematic (RTK) GPS. GPS modules in general are only equipped with a microstrip-type antenna or better known as patch antenna. Results from related research show that GPS module with this type of antenna has sub meter accuracy when used for PPK or RTK GPS method. The use of geodetic antennas is very potential to increase GPS position accuracy by up to centimeter level. This paper discusses the evaluation of GPS module measurements with geodetic type antennas for precise positioning using RTK GPS. This paper is focused on the resolution of GPS cycle ambiguity that is often expressed by the term fixing ratio and the accuracy of measurement results obtained. To provide a comprehensive description of the performance of GPS module, in this research two types of GPS module were used; single and dual frequency. Both types of GPS modules were used to conduct simultaneous observation on an open and obstructed observation location.

Streszczenie:
The general medical services (GMS) scheme provides care free at the point of use for the 30% most economically deprived section of the population and the elderly. Almost all people of over-70-year olds are eligible for the GMS scheme potentially directing resources away from those most in need. The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between practice GMS income and deprivation amongst Dublin-based general practitioners (GPs). The practice GMS income in Dublin was analysed in relation to practice characteristics including the number of GPs, catchment area population, proportion of over-70-year olds in the catchment area, catchment deprivation, number of GMS GPs within 2 km, and average GMS practice income within 2 km. Practice GMS income was highest in deprived areas but is also a valuable source of income in the least deprived areas. The capitation rate for over-70-year olds provides an incentive for GPs to locate in affluent areas and potentially directs resources away from those in greater need.

Streszczenie:
Persistent incidences of lack of maximum effectiveness in mobile GPS tracking systems are an increasing concern. Methods used to optimize performance were found to be plagued with less implementation and a concern in the industry. This study definitively answers the question regarding correlation between lack of optimal methods for mobile GPS tracking and the problems encountered in mobile GPS tracking systems. The purpose of this study is to investigate the connection between optimizing mobile GPS tracking and the incidences leading to the problem. Review was carried out on the existing methods for fulfilling mobile GPS tracking from the literatures in order to justify their strengths and gaps for relevant improvement. Further studies are needed to establish a model that works optimally and would prevent poor performance in mobile GPS tracking.

Performance of High-Rate Kinematic GPS During Strong Shaking: Observations from Shake Table Tests and the 2010 Chile EarthquakeOver the last decade, the 1-sample-per-second kinematic Global Positioning System (GPS) has been used as a displacement sensor in earthquake observations and for structural health monitoring. Many researchers in both seismology and engineering have expressed the desire for higher-sample-rate (10-sample-per-second or higher) GPS data to acquire high-frequency displacement information. We performed several shake table tests of GPS observation on 29 April, 2009 for the purpose of evaluating the performance of high-rate kinematic GPS. We found that the accuracy of high-rate kinematic GPS depended on antenna movement, but was independent of receiver sampling rate. The errors in kinematic GPS measurements during the periods of strong shaking were systematically larger than those during the static periods. Furthermore, we found that these large errors were coincident with large accelerations and jerks in the motions experienced by the GPS receivers and antennas. Observations from the 2010 earthquake in Maule, Chile (M 8.8) indicated that strong ground motions can degrade the accuracy of high-rate kinematic GPS measurements. Significant jerks and/or accelerations can cause GPS units to temporarily lose tracking on satellite signals and lead to gaps in GPS-recorded seismograms.
