Abstract In this Letter we report a discovery of a prominent flash of a peculiar overluminous Type Ia supernova, SN 2020hvf, in about 5 hr of the supernova explosion by the first wide-field mosaic CMOS sensor imager, the Tomo-e Gozen Camera. The fast evolution of the early flash was captured by intensive intranight observations via the Tomo-e Gozen high-cadence survey. Numerical simulations show that such a prominent and fast early emission is most likely generated from an interaction between 0.01 M ⊙ circumstellar material (CSM) extending to a distance of ∼1013 cm and supernova ejecta soon after the explosion, indicating a confined dense CSM formation at the final evolution stage of the progenitor of SN 2020hvf. Based on the CSM–ejecta interaction-induced early flash, the overluminous light curve, and the high ejecta velocity of SN 2020hvf, we suggest that the SN 2020hvf may originate from a thermonuclear explosion of a super-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf (“super-M Ch WD”). Systematical investigations on explosion mechanisms and hydrodynamic simulations of the super-M Ch WD explosion are required to further test the suggested scenario and understand the progenitor of this peculiar supernova.

Abstract We studied the optical variability of 241 BL Lacertae (BL Lacs) and 83 flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) from the 4LAC catalog using data from the Tomo-e Gozen Northern Sky Transient Survey, with ∼50 epochs per blazar on average. We excluded blazars whose optical variability may be underestimated due to the influence of their host galaxy based on their optical luminosity (L O ). FSRQs with γ-ray photon index greater than 2.6 exhibit very low optical variability, and their distribution of standard deviation of repeated photometry is significantly different from that of the other FSRQs (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test p-value equal to 5 × 10−6). Among a sample of blazars at any particular cosmological epoch, those with lower γ-ray luminosity (L γ ) tend to have lower optical variability, and those FSRQs with a γ-ray photon index greater than 2.6 tend to have low L γ . We also measured the structure function of optical variability and found that the amplitude of the structure function for FSRQs is higher than previously measured and higher than that of BL Lacs at multiple time lags. Additionally, the amplitude of the structure function of FSRQs with high γ-ray photon index is significantly lower than that of FSRQs with low γ-ray photon index. The structure function of FSRQs of high γ-ray photon index shows a characteristic timescale of more than 10 days, which may be the variability timescale of the accretion disk. In summary, we infer that the optical component of FSRQs with high γ-ray photon index may be dominated by the accretion disk.

ABSTRACT The population of optical transients evolving within a time-scale of a few hours or a day (so-called fast optical transients, FOTs) has recently been debated extensively. In particular, our understanding of extragalactic FOTs and their rates is limited. We present a search for extragalactic FOTs with the Tomo-e Gozen high-cadence survey. Using the data taken from 2019 August to 2022 June, we obtain 113 FOT candidates. Through light curve analysis and cross-matching with other survey data, we find that most of these candidates are in fact supernovae, variable quasars, and Galactic dwarf novae that were partially observed around their peak brightness. We find no promising candidate of extragalactic FOTs. From this non-detection, we obtain upper limits on the event rate of extragalactic FOTs as a function of their time-scale. For a very luminous event (absolute magnitude M < −26 mag), we obtain the upper limits of 4.4 × 10−9 Mpc−3 yr−1 for a time-scale of 4 h, and 7.4 × 10−10 Mpc−3 yr−1 for a time-scale of 1 d. Thanks to our wide (although shallow) surveying strategy, our data are less affected by the cosmological effects, and thus, give one of the more stringent limits to the event rate of intrinsically luminous transients with a time-scale of <1 d.

Abstract We conduct 24.4 fps optical observations of repeating fast radio burst (FRB) 20190520B using Tomo-e Gozen, a high-speed CMOS camera mounted on the Kiso 105 cm Schmidt telescope, simultaneously with radio observations carried out using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We succeeded in the simultaneous optical observations of 11 radio bursts that FAST detected. However, no corresponding optical emission was found. The optical fluence limits as deep as 0.068 Jy ms are obtained for the individual bursts (0.029 Jy ms on the stacked data) corrected for the dust extinction in the Milky Way. The fluence limit is deeper than those obtained in the previous simultaneous observations for an optical emission with a duration ≳0.1 ms. Although the current limits on radio-optical spectral energy distribution (SED) of FRBs are not constraining, we show that SED models based on observed SEDs of radio variable objects such as optically detected pulsars, and a part of parameter spaces of theoretical models in which FRB optical emission is produced by inverse Compton scattering in a pulsar magnetosphere or a strike of a magnetar blastwave into a hot wind bubble, can be ruled out once a similar fluence limit as in our observation is obtained for a bright FRB with a radio fluence ≳5 Jy ms.

The pursuit of astronomical research has vastly expanded and illuminated our understanding of physics and the laws of the universe. This, in turn, is knowledge useful to a wide range of applications, many that would not have been foreseen in the original research. Astronomy helped create accurate navigation and mapping whilst technologies developed in the pursuit of the stars can be found in many key, everyday devices. Despite millennia of combing the night skies, there are still many mysteries about the universe that we do not yet understand. Professor Toshikazu Shigeyama and Associate Professor Shigeyuki Sako based at the Research Center for the Early Universe (RESCEU) and Institute of Astronomy (IoA), The University of Tokyo, Japan, are two astronomers working to uncover new information about our universe. They have led a team of researchers who were responsible for creating a new astronomical camera, the Tomo-e Gozen. This device will be capable of helping to shed light on several unknowns through the use of sensors able to capture images much closer together in time than ever before.

This paper investigates Japanese apology expressions, particularly the co-occurrence of su(m)imasen and gomen nasai with various linguistic devices (i.e. adverbs, interjections, conjunctions, etc.) in social interactions. Differing from previous research, the present research focuses on (1) the linguistic devices co-occurring with the apology expression, (2) their relation to the interactional functions the expressions serve in situated contexts, (3) their roles within discourse and the effect they produce, and (4) the way the speaker expresses his or her emotional attitude through these linguistic devices. To this end, data was collected from Japanese television dramas, and the linguistic devices marking su(m)imasen and gomen nasai, adverbial forms and interjections that were most encountered were examined. The analysis revealed that the co-occurrences with the apology expressions do influence or change the entire meaning of the utterance.

Previous research on Japanese apologies has presented us with a somewhat static approach, connecting one linguistic form to one aspect of the social context. However, interaction itself is a dynamic and spontaneous process; consequently, apology expressions’ meanings are situated and negotiated in the place of interaction. Therefore, in this study, shifts from gomen to su(m)imasen and gomen nasai, and from su(m)imasen to gomen nasai, were analyzed in order to demonstrate that Japanese apologies function as indexical signs of emotional expression. To this end, data was collected from Japanese television dramas, where the ongoing development of the relationships protagonists were involved in was chronologically observed. Using as analytical concepts, (1) the social context of an interaction, (2) the selves participants impersonate, and (3) the speech styles the interactions occur in, to explain situated variation in the use of apology expressions, the current study revealed new meanings an apology carries in a situated context and also reinforced some of the previous research findings.

The square root of two is an irrational number that cannot be written as a fraction of the numerator and denominator. By using the generating function of A-B Goen, from the resulting set of numbers, the sequence of A-B Goen numbers can be obtained by selecting integer numbers. The A Goen numbers are generated from the generator function which have integer numbers, while the B Goen numbers are obtained from the sequence numbers. In this study, through the generating function of A-B Goen, it can be proven that the division between the A Goen number and the B Goen number in an infinite sequence will result the value of the square root of two.

We consider mod $p$ Hilbert modular forms associated to a totally real field of degree $d$ in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that every such form arises by multiplication by partial Hasse invariants from one whose weight (a $d$-tuple of integers) lies in a certain cone contained in the set of non-negative weights, answering a question of Andreatta and Goren. The proof is based on properties of the Goren–Oort stratification on mod $p$ Hilbert modular varieties established by Goren and Oort, and Tian and Xiao.

Let $F$ be a totally real field in which a prime $p$ is unramified. We define the Goren–Oort stratification of the characteristic-$p$ fiber of a quaternionic Shimura variety of maximal level at $p$. We show that each stratum is a $(\mathbb{P}^{1})^{r}$-bundle over other quaternionic Shimura varieties (for an appropriate integer $r$). As an application, we give a necessary condition for the ampleness of a modular line bundle on a quaternionic Shimura variety in characteristic $p$.

Las cuestiones acerca de la posibilidad del pensamiento, entendido como una actividad dirigida a la realidad, son más profundas que las referidas a si el conocimiento es posible. El trilema de Agripa, particularmente mediante el tropo de arbitrariedad, expresa dichas cuestiones intuitivamente. Este tropo es, además, operativo en lo que se re ere a la epistemología de goznes, principalmente en virtud del hecho de que los goznes wittgensteinianos son principios fundacionales de nuestra práctica epistémica. Como tales, carecen necesariamente de aval racional, lo que plantea el problema de si la arbitrariedad de su aseveración es inherente a su carácter fundacional. Para afrontar este reto, los epistemólogos de goznes han propuesto una serie de argumentos prácticos que conciben los goznes bien como postulados que se exigen legítimamente a cualquier agente epistémico o como reglas constitutivas de la práctica ordinaria. El objeto de este trabajo es el de demostrar que tales argumentos son presa de consideraciones escépticas.

Deep learning unlocks applications with societal impacts, e.g., detecting child exploitation imagery and genomic analysis of rare diseases. Deployment, however, needs compliance with stringent privacy regulations. Training algorithms that preserve the privacy of training data are in pressing need. Purely cryptographic approaches can protect privacy, but they are still costly, even when they rely on two or more non-colluding servers. Seemingly-"trivial" operations in plaintext quickly become prohibitively inefficient when a series of them are "crypto-processed," e.g., (dynamic) quantization for ensuring the intermediate values would not overflow. Slalom, recently proposed by Tramer and Boneh, is the first solution that leverages both GPU (for efficient batch computation) and a trusted execution environment (TEE) (for minimizing the use of cryptography). Roughly, it works by a lot of pre-computation over known and fixed weights, and hence it only supports private inference. Five related problems for private training are left unaddressed. Goten, our privacy-preserving training and prediction framework, tackles all five problems simultaneously via our careful design over the "mismatched" cryptographic and GPU data types (due to the tension between precision and efficiency) and our round-optimal GPU-outsourcing protocol (hence minimizing the communication cost between servers). It 1) stochastically trains a low-bitwidth yet accurate model, 2) supports dynamic quantization (a challenge left by Slalom), 3) minimizes the memory-swapping overhead of the memory-limited TEE and its communication with GPU, 4) crypto-protects the (dynamic) model weight from untrusted GPU, and 5) outperforms a pure-TEE system, even without pre-computation (needed by Slalom). As a baseline, we build CaffeScone that secures Caffe using TEE but not GPU; Goten shows a 6.84x speed-up of the whole VGG-11. Goten also outperforms Falcon proposed by Wagh et al., the latest secure multi-server cryptographic solution, by 132.64x using VGG-11. Lastly, we demonstrate Goten's efficacy in training models for breast cancer diagnosis over sensitive images.

The days when only specialists worked with programs and the functionality was the most important have long passed. In today's competitive environment, an important marketing component is reliability in which the only tangible part of the program, the interface, plays a large role. Purely psychological, it is important for the users' visibility, correctness and can even be argued, friendliness. This is determined by the elements of visibility and components' location in intuitively expected places, design integrity, tone and choice of characteristic elements which, together, create a feeling of sympathy or antipathy from the software user. Regularities, which ultimately determine the user's subconscious reactions, are found in natural formations - from the most basic proportions of plants to more sophisticated self-arranged compositions. The harmony of the structures of natural systems, that is, their internal organization, is subject to certain mathematical laws. Objective world stable stationary states corresponding to particular figures, called generalized Golen Ratios. These figures are all the structure of the invariant, which are embodied by the dialectic structure of the world and the different variations that can be observed at every step of nature. It is important to note that with the generalized Golden Ratio, not only is the well-known ratio of 1:1,618 understood, but a whole line of relationships, where like in music, a single major or minor note can be played, and another can stand out from the whole ensemble. The main applications of the Goden Ratio in interface design are space division, caption-font size ratios, restrictive areas (buttons), title queue length, color tone saturation ratio, and cell location coordinates. In this paper, we propose certain recomendations for the development of a user - friendly interface. These recommendations suggest uses in the software developer training process for non-design specialty students; target group - programmers, computer specialists, and IT project managers. The article does not address the development of graphic design tools and their functionality.
