We investigate the usefulness of gossip-based reduction algorithms in a high-performance computing (HPC) context. We compare them to state-of-the-art deterministic parallel reduction algorithms in terms of fault tolerance and resilience against silent data corruption (SDC) as well as in terms of performance and scalability. New gossip-based reduction algorithms are proposed, which significantly improve the state-of-the-art in terms of resilience against SDC. Moreover, a new gossip-inspired reduction algorithm is proposed, which promises a much more competitive runtime performance in an HPC context than classical gossip-based algorithms, in particular for low accuracy requirements.

Arlis arose in the late 1960s out of the need for British art and design librarians to have a specialist organisation to support their emerging professional concerns. The Society was independent from other library bodies and has remained so. From its original modest aim of ‘promoting art librarianship’ it has become a force for redefining this subject specialist area and creating international links, especially with sister organisations across the world; from ‘gossip shop’ for domestic concerns to an active participant in the IFLA Section of Art Libraries. The Art Libraries Journal has been the principal vehicle for promulgating this concern. ARLIS/UK & Ireland can look forward to extending its role and pursuing its activities with vigour in the next 25 years. This article is a slightly revised version of a paper delivered to the 25th Anniversary Conference of ARLIS/UK & Ireland, London, 7th-10th April 1994.

Streszczenie:
This article reveals the formative interplay between the queer art of gossip and poetic practice in James Merrill’s The Changing Light at Sandover, a sprawling verse trilogy composed with the unlikely assistance of a Ouija board. The poem’s extensive gossip with the dead is often dismissed as mere surface. Yet Merrill, the article contends, indulges in what he calls the Ouija’s “backstage gossip” both to establish a queer relationship to poetic tradition and to confront the pervasive menace of the Cold War discourse of the Lavender Scare, which haunts the trilogy’s 1950s origins. Arguing that midcentury American attitudes about sexuality inflect—productively as much as disastrously—the relationship of lyric privacy to gossipy publicity in Merrill’s poem, the article shows how gossip, in its rich afterlife in Sandover, emerges not so much as a normative threat to be overcome but as a mode of fostering and preserving nonnormative voices, converting the privacy imposed on the homosexual into the conditions for creating queer worlds. Gossip concomitantly provides Merrill with a model of poetic self-performance that at once pushes against and embraces New Critical ideals of lyric subjectivity—a way of telling one’s own scandalous story through someone else’s words, even words intended as hostile, discovering poetic and sexual pleasures where others see only anxiety and dread.

Streszczenie:
With the onset of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), distributed algorithms on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been receiving renewed attention. The distributed consensus problem is a well studied problem having a myriad of applications which can be accomplished using asynchronous distributed gossip algorithms on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). However, a practical realization of gossip algorithms for WSNs is found lacking in the current state of the art. In this paper, we propose the design, development, and analysis of a novel in situ distributed gossip framework called INDIGO. A key aspect of INDIGO is its ability to perform on a generic system platform as well as on a hardware oriented testbed platform in a seamless manner allowing easy portability of existing algorithms. We evaluate the performance of INDIGO with respect to the distributed consensus problem as well as the distributed optimization problem. We also present a data driven analysis of the effect certain operating parameters like sleep time and wait time have on the performance of the framework and empirically attempt to determine asweet spot. The results obtained from various experiments on INDIGO validate its efficacy, reliability, and robustness and demonstrate its utility as a framework for the evaluation and implementation of asynchronous distributed algorithms.

Streszczenie:
Graph representation learning (GRL) is a powerful technique for learning low-dimensional vector representation of high-dimensional and often sparse graphs. Most studies explore the structure and metadata associated with the graph using random walks and employ an unsupervised or semi-supervised learning schemes. Learning in these methods is context-free, resulting in only a single representation per node. Recently studies have argued on the adequacy of a single representation and proposed context-sensitive approaches, which are capable of extracting multiple node representations for different contexts. This proved to be highly effective in applications such as link prediction and ranking. However, most of these methods rely on additional textual features that require complex and expensive RNNs or CNNs to capture high-level features or rely on a community detection algorithm to identify multiple contexts of a node.In this study we show that in-order to extract high-quality context-sensitive node representations it is not needed to rely on supplementary node features, nor to employ computationally heavy and complex models. We propose Goat, a context-sensitive algorithm inspired by gossip communication and a mutual attention mechanism simply over the structure of the graph. We show the efficacy of Goat using 6 real-world datasets on link prediction and node clustering tasks and compare it against 12 popular and state-of-the-art (SOTA) baselines. Goat consistently outperforms them and achieves up to 12% and 19% gain over the best performing methods on link prediction and clustering tasks, respectively.

Streszczenie:
The main problem solved in the article was the issue of dating Gogol’s rough sketches with the author’s “working” title “To the 1st part.” For almost a hundred years, it was generally accepted that these sketches, related to the first volume of Dead Souls, were written after the publication of this volume in 1842. The arbitrary dating of the notes “To the 1st part” to 1845–1846 is refuted by numerous facts indicating that the images and motifs of the notes were “interspersed” by Gogol into the overall fabric of the poem. These references were first pointed out in 1987 by V. A. Voropaev, who dated the sketches to 1839–1840. New observations were added to the textual observations made by the researcher, allowing one to trace the evolution of the text. The author's intention, as it appears in the sketches, is also analyzed along with the means by which it is realized in the poem. The combined data of textual criticism and poetics make it possible to clarify the dating of the notes, attributing them to the first months of 1841. The notes contain the author’s plan to express a broad educational meaning in the “gossip” and “idleness” of the city of N. in the first volume of the poem, endowing this the representation with an expression of a general “idleness” of the world. To realize this plan, Gogol planned to bring up several analogies to the “idle” life of “dead souls” in the poem, i.e., “to include all the similarities and introduce a gradual progression.” In the final text of the poem, such “similarities” were typologically “related” to gossip: fortune-telling “scientific reasoning”, predictions of false prophets and pseudo-spiritual literature. According to Gogol, all of them, taken in their totality, explain the numerous misconceptions of mankind in world history — following the “swamp lights”, “roads that lead far to the side.” Rumors about the Antichrist arising in the “emptiness” of the city suggest that in the final chapters of the first volume the writer depicts, as earlier in “The Government Inspector,” the pre-apocalyptic state of society, the approach of the last times — which for some, in fact, become the “last hour” (the death of the prosecutor).

Streszczenie:
This thesis analyses the content, tone, form and authorship of the national newspaper gossip column 1918-1939, as a new means through which the qualities of the popular press in this period can be more closely defined. Often dismissed as an example of the sensational, Americanization of early twentieth-century popular culture, the celebrity gossip column has been loosely grouped with the friendly, informal language and bolder formatting of the ‘New Journalism’ of the late nineteenth century and the development of the dramatic ‘human-interest’ stories of ‘everyday life’ in the interwar period (LeMahieu, 1988; Wiener, 1988). Through a comparative study of six newspapers including the Daily Express, Daily Mail and News of the World, I analyse the changing representation of the celebrity subject, and, originally, the shifting character and persona of the gossip columnist. Whereas some historians have analysed the content of newspapers without considering the questions of the newspaper’s production, I analyse newspaper employment records, gossip columnists’ memoirs and their unpublished letters and diaries to define the specific economic, social and cultural circumstances which, I argue, influenced their public portrayal. Also, in examining the unpublished correspondence between editors, proprietors and columnists and the burgeoning print culture of journalistic training manuals and professional memoirs, I provide a history of the press’s professionalization in this period. The national popular press has often been used as a historical source to define national character and national identity in the interwar period (Bland, 2008; Kohn, 1992). By scrutinizing the content and production of the gossip column and particularly the class, behaviour, interactions and subject matter of the columnist, I argue that the gossip column presented a version of ‘Britishness’ that was not so inward-looking and domesticated as so many accounts of interwar Britain suggest.

Internet-based celebrity gossip blog site, TMZ, is a growing cultural force. Employing critical rhetorical analytics, the author examines the TMZ coverage of Chris Brown's assault on his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. This project explicates TMZ's enthymematic invocation of dominant cultural ideologies surrounding race, sex, and domestic violence. Chapter 1 demonstrates the theoretical importance of both celebrities and gossip blogs, signaling the ideological importance of each. Chapter 2 critiques TMZ's reliance on historic myths regarding sex and race in their reporting on this case. Chapter 3 analyzes TMZ's humorous and affective strategies that bolster broader investments in colorblind ideologies. Chapter 4 concludes by examining the interplay of formal rhetorical elements that inform the project's findings. This research reveals that TMZ utilizes affective, enthymematic strategies that camouflage broader racist and sexist ideological impulses that perpetuate domestic violence myths.

Streszczenie:
Stephen Goss composed Cinema Paradiso, a six-movement suite for solo guitar, as an homage to films and film directors. Goss cites nihilism as a theme in Dogville, the film that inspires the fourth movement, "Mandalay," but I assert that all the films and many musical devices throughout the piece can be read through the lens of nihilism. The first movement, "Paris, Texas," depicts the stark landscape of the opening scene of the 1984 Wim Wenders film of the same name. "Modern Times" chronicles Charlie Chaplin's slapstick-laden descent from the factory to the insane asylum in the opening sequence of his 1936 Modern Times. "Noir" is a tribute to the procedures of film noir: violent storylines that depict the harshness of life, dim lighting, and anti-hero characters, all accompanied by jazz. Lars von Trier's Dogville provides the movement "Mandalay" with its nihilistic meaning, but Goss writes that he invokes the musical style of Kurt Weill's opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Just as the book people of François Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451 had to pass on books orally, Goss has burned the score for his "451," forcing guitarists to learn it by watching a video and listening to a recording. Finally, the chaotic tarantella, "Tarantino" depicts Uma Thurman's heroin overdose scene in Quinten Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. By analyzing Fredrich Nietzsche's writings to form a broader definition of nihilism and applying that definition first to each film and then to corresponding musical elements in each movement, this paper argues that nihilism acts as a connecting theme throughout Cinema Paradiso.

Streszczenie:
The Victorians saw more portraits than any generation before them. While the eighteenth century has been named 'the age of portraiture', portraits pervaded nineteenth-century society like never before. With the invention of photography, coupled with technological advancements in low-cost printing methods, the medium in which faces could be recorded was revolutionised, the classes of society that could afford to be immortalised expanded, and the spaces in which portraits were seen proliferated. These spaces included the public gallery, photography studio shop windows, and personal photograph albums. They also included the art periodical, biography, fiction, and poetry as the experience of portraiture became distinctly textual as well as visual. This thesis draws upon art history alongside literary, museum, and material studies to explore the creative exchange that developed between portrait viewership and reading practices in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Taking the establishment of the National Portrait Gallery in 1856 as its starting point, the thesis tracks the changing idea of the portrait gallery through its literary reception. It takes the portrait gallery to mean the physical space in which portraits were exhibited, and the conceptual idea of collecting, arranging, and interacting with portraits that permeated into the literary world. By focussing on the work of Edmund Gosse, Walter Pater, Thomas Hardy, and Vernon Lee, the thesis forms a 'gallery' of nineteenth-century tastemakers, each of whom looked to the democratic art of portraiture to reflect upon their literary art. How did portraits and texts interact in the mid- to late nineteenth century? In what ways did writers adapt the conventions of portraiture and the portrait gallery for the written text? This thesis seeks to answer these questions and provide new narratives about the complex relationship between the visual and the verbal in nineteenth-century culture. It observes the Victorian 'culture of art' with a more focussed eye to illuminate how the conditions of viewing, circulating, and collecting portraits specific to the period allowed the portrait gallery to serve as a particularly compelling arena for the literary imagination. Gosse, Pater, Hardy, and Lee tested the inherent limitations of portraiture as an art of imitation to realise its imaginative capacity for communicating with close and distant, contemporary and historic figures. They recognised that writing offered a valuable way of constructing the affective conversations that could be had with - and the stories that could be told about - portraits and portrait collections. With the proliferation of portraits came the problem and the opportunity of organising them.

This thesis sets out to examine the capacity of new governments to influence partisan-based policy and legislation. It examines two newly elected Queensland governments - the Nicklin Country-Liberal government in 1957- 1961 and the Goss Labor government in 1989- 1990 and analyses the introduction by those governments of major industrial relations legislative reform. The Nicklin Coalition government was elected to the Queensland parliament in 1957 after the collapse of the Gair Labor government. The Coalition was committed to extensive industrial relations legislative reform but had not prepared for, or anticipated the constitutional, administrative and legal problems associated with such reform. Nor had it taken into account the concessions that would need to be made to the state's trade unions in order to effect its reforms. Consequently it was not until 1961 that it found the time was propitious for the introduction of its major legislative reforms and the restructuring of the state's principal industrial relations legislation. By contrast, in 1989 the Goss government elected as a consequence of the National Party's collapse in the face of the Fitzgerald Inquiry of 1987 had prepared itself for government. As a result it was able to take advantage of its newly elected status and the existence of the Hanger Report (1988) to introduce its legislative intentions quickly, in such a way that it did not alienate the business community. Preparation and circumstances therefore allowed Labor to repeal earlier legislation supported by business and introduce its own changes with little or no opposition. The thesis concludes that their political and economic inheritance and the existing policy environment will in varying degrees limit new governments. But their ability to introduce partisan-based legislative change quickly is also determined by the degree of preparation for the process of government, undertaken prior to their election. This thesis demonstrates that new governments can make a difference and effect changes to the industrial relations environment. However if this potential is to be realised and new governments are to take advantage of their newly elected status it will require a significant degree of administrative preparation or a considerable period of acclimatisation to the rigours of office.

Dodd, Sue. "Gossip pop: A performative investigation of the role of pop in contemporary art practice". Thesis, 2013. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/24837/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
By broadening and redefining “pop,” this thesis intends to demonstrate pop’s potential to be considered in a manner that is productive for and applicable to contemporary art theory and practice. The research will be presented as a final survey or diachronic exhibition that will demonstrate the development of the series of Gossip Pop performances and exhibitions, together with a written exegesis. The practical component of this research will consist of writing, producing, performing and exhibiting a series of interdisciplinary visual artworks in a range of gallery contexts under the pseudonym or label Gossip Pop. These works, utilising visual and linguistic appropriation, repetition and performative methodologies, are constructed within the confines of their own self-contained Gossip Pop genre, which mimics the tropes of capitalist production and consumption, taking “pop” as an antecedent. “Pop” is broadly defined for the purposes of this project and will be considered in the exegesis in three ways. Firstly, pop will be considered through aspects of the contemporary understanding of popular culture, as this pertains to ideas of mass media communication, specifically celebrity culture and gossip, drawing on the context of late capitalism and the intensification of the form of the commodity. Secondly, pop will be contemplated in relation to the theory and practice of the art historical movement “pop art,” with a particular reference to the work, life and philosophy of Andy Warhol. Finally, the notion of “pop music” as the subject (and methodology) of visual art will be examined, with a focus on two major international exhibitions, Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll since 1967, curated by Dominic Molon for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, September 29, 2007 to January 6, 2008, and Rock-Paper-Scissors, curated by Diederich Diederichson for iii the Kunsthaus Graz, Vienna, 30 June to 30 August, 2009. These notions of pop provide the framework for speculation regarding the role of pop in respect to the epistemological, communicative and socio-political potential for contemporary art practice, including: the productive implications or effects of the “performative” visual artwork, the connotations for (and) ideologies of spectatorship, and conjecture regarding the highly contingent role or position of the artist. This speculation is supported by examples of contemporary art practice that explicate or illuminate aspects of my own work.

AbstractThis chapter examines the rise of literary advice in Anglo-American periodical culture from 1884 to 1895. Capitalizing on a moment when fiction became both more self-consciously artistic and more potentially lucrative, literary advice of this era addressed the full range of literary practice and the attendant practical activities that made it possible. The chapter resituates the landmark “Art of Fiction” debate (1884)—an event crucially sponsored by the magazines—as the opening of an era of practical discussion that was soon after taken up in trade journals devoted specifically to authorship. The practical advice dispensed by these journals—including tools, tricks, tips, and gossip—focuses on the form of the short story, creating a loop with a form that was itself a magazine staple. This interactive looping is considered in the conclusion, where the chapter examines a systematic course in literary art offered by Atalanta, a late-Victorian “Girl’s Magazine.”

AbstractThis chapter draws on The Pinewood Merry-Go-Round, a newly discovered primary source, which is a rare surviving example of a film studio magazine, produced at Pinewood by employees in 1946–1947. This chapter details how the magazine articulated Pinewood’s culture as a social enterprise as well as providing insights into its various working spaces. It brings to life the reality of being a studio employee, the day-to-day activities that are rarely described in film histories. The Pinewood Merry-Go-Round provides a rare glimpse into how studio employees bonded through sports and social clubs, musical and film groups, organising a Christmas pantomime, putting on art exhibitions, writing short stories, sharing studio gossip, and reporting issues of concern such as transport to work and long working hours.

Streszczenie:
AbstractAs the COVID-19 pandemic confined millions across the globe to their homes, technology proved an indispensable tool that allowed humanity to sustain many aspects of everyday life, including social behaviours. In compliance with quarantine restrictions, communities were unable to support each other in the usual manner; simultaneously, the demand for such support grew, owing to the difficult circumstances. This study (N = 196) explores whether technology enabled or hindered this specific type of social interaction – helping others. We discovered that General Online Social Interaction Propensity correlated positively with helping – although it demonstrated stronger correlations with online support. The Technology Adoption Propensity Index Optimism and Proficiency subscales failed to correlate significantly with helping and only Vulnerability subscale showed significant correlation. In conclusion, both GOSIP and TAP Vulnerability are valid predictors of proneness to offer help online. We suggest considering various personality predispositions may help to maximize the effectiveness of online helping.

Streszczenie:
Gossip protocols are programs that can be used by a group of agents to synchronize what information they have. Namely, assuming each agent holds a secret, the goal of a protocol is to reach a situation in which all agents know all secrets. Distributed epistemic gossip protocols use epistemic formulas in the component programs for the agents. In this paper, we study the simplest classes of such gossip protocols: propositional gossip protocols, in which whether an agent wants to initiate a call depends only on the set of secrets that the agent currently knows. It was recently shown that such a protocol can be correct, i.e., always terminates in a state where all agents know all secrets, only when its communication graph is complete. We show here that this characterization dramatically changes when the usual fairness constraints are imposed on the call scheduler used. Finally, we establish that checking the correctness of a given propositional protocol under a fair scheduler is a coNP-complete problem.

Streszczenie:
Gossip protocols deal with a group of communicating agents, each holding a private information, and aim at arriving at a situation in which all the agents know each other secrets. Distributed epistemic gossip protocols are particularly simple distributed programs that use formulas from an epistemic logic. Recently, the implementability of these distributed protocols was established (which means that the evaluation of these formulas is decidable), and the problems of their partial correctness and termination were shown to be decidable, but their exact computational complexity was left open. We show that for any monotonic type of calls the implementability of a distributed epistemic gossip protocol is a P^{NP}_{||}-complete problem, while the problems of its partial correctness and termination are in coNP^{NP}.

Streszczenie:
Training deep learning models on data distributed and local to edge devices such as mobile phones is a prominent recent research direction. In a Gossip Learning (GL) system, each participating device maintains a model trained on its local data and iteratively aggregates it with the models from its neighbours in a communication network. While the fully distributed operation in GL comes with natural advantages over the centralized orchestration in Federated Learning (FL), its convergence becomes particularly slow when the data distribution is heterogeneous and aligns with the clustered structure of the communication network. These characteristics are pervasive across practical applications as people with similar interests (thus producing similar data) tend to create communities. This paper proposes a data-driven neighbor weighting strategy for aggregating the models: this enables faster diffusion of knowledge across the communities in the network and leads to quicker convergence. We augment the method to make it computationally efficient and fair: the devices quickly converge to the same model. We evaluate our model on real and synthetic datasets that we generate using a novel generative model for communication networks with heterogeneous data. Our exhaustive empirical evaluation verifies that our proposed method attains a faster convergence rate than the baselines. For example, the median test accuracy for a decentralized bird image classifier application reaches 81% with our proposed method within 80 rounds, whereas the baseline only reaches 46%.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In the oil and gas industries, the gas-oil separation plant (GOSP) is operated at fixed operating conditions without considering the effect of ambient temperature (Ta) variations. Temperature is one of the parameters that can affect the GOSP process and its output. Ignoring the variation in the ambient temperature may lead to a loss in oil recovery and corresponding revenue. The separation process is highly affected by the variation of ambient temperature, where the ambient temperature varies greatly from summer to winter. As the plant is operated at a fixed operating condition that is not optimized results in low recovery of the GOSP output. The optimization process of high-pressure separator (HPS) and low-pressure separator (LPS) is required to compensate for the variation in ambient temperature, which leads to maximizing oil recovery and plant revenue. Thus, this study aims to develop an intelligent optimization system to improve the oil production of the Gas-Oil-Separation-Plant (GOSP) considering the variation in ambient temperature. Accordingly, the objective of this work is to provide an intelligent system for the determination of the best-operating set-points of the pressure (optimum pressure) for the high-pressure separator (HPS), low-pressure separator (LPS) at which maximum hydrocarbon liquid recovery can be obtained through the GOSP plant at a given ambient temperature. To achieve the objective of this study, a GOSP model was built by Petro-SIM process simulator software using a typical Saudi Aramco GOSP design. The data from the initial PVT analysis is considered as an input for the process simulator. Then the optimizer tools built in the Petro-SIM are activated to determine the optimum condition of HPS and LPS in an integrated fashion accounting for variation in ambient temperature for maximizing the liquid recovery. The results showed increases in ambient temperature result in a decrease in the oil recovery of the GOSP plant. The oil recovery appears to increase with an increase in HPS pressure reaching the maximum and then decreasing with a further increase in the HPS pressure. Similarly, the LPS pressure affects the oil recovery when LPS pressure increases oil recovery increases reaching the optimum point and then decreases with a further increase in LPS pressure. An intelligent system can be built based on an optimization process for determining the optimum condition of LPS and HPS for compensating variation in ambient temperature.

Different from previous generations, the 5G networks has new capabilities due to service-based architecture model and virtualization. The successful broadband networks must be able to handle the growth in the data traffic. The e-Health networks has additional issues as the continuous monitoring of patients suffering from chronic diseases (non-communicable diseases). The wearable devices used for monitoring are supposed to be used for balneo-physio-kinetotherapy (including the body gait index calculation) in the future and this will require and increasing traffic as users and data for 5G networks. Medical data and biomedical data are usually very large (especially for medical images) and the traffic can be critical in some situation when in order to take a decision due to alarms from generated by medical emergency when the data should be provided very fast to the physicians (hospitals, or clinics). An architecture for smart e-Health monitoring including the management of big database open the opportunity to use intelligent algorithm for complex problems, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The possibility to use of three algorithms in simulation and simulators for e-Health 5G wireless network is investigate in this paper. One of the key requirement is low energy consumption due to number of antenna elements at the access points and number of user terminals. The problem optimization address to a mix agglomeration: dense urban area along with a set of dispersed locations in a rural area. The network planning is defined as optimization problem of configuration that depends on BS (Base Station) location and transmission power but as novelty, the constraints due to inclusion of rural area are also included in feasible solution. The constraints refer to two situations: the relief (that can be natural zone) or imposed black zone due external factors. Three algorithms are examined: Real-coded Genetic Algorithm for Variable Population - RCGAV), NSGA - II and Gossip, applied to modelling and optimization of power consumption in wireless access networks. Scenarios with simulation of the traffic between the client and the server are taken in to account using known models of distribution: Poisson, Pareto, and Weibull.

The unsteady flow motions and the force distribution in a normal square tube array subject to cross-flow induced vibrations are investigated by means of large-eddy simulations. The flow configuration and the operating conditions are taken from the experiments of Gosse et al. (PVP Conference, 2001). The set-up is made of 63 (9 rows and 7 columns) straight tube bundle. The tubes are arranged in a square in line pattern, and a cell of 9 flexible tubes, located in the middle of the bundle, may translate in the drag and lift directions. The LES of cross-flow induced vibrations of a cell of 9 flexible tubes in a normal square tube array is performed. A fully-coupled fluid-structure calculation is hence achieved using Code_Saturne, an open source CFD tool. Turbulence modeling is achieved using the large-eddy simulation framework based on the so-called classical Smagorinsky model. The tube dynamics is modeled by simple mass-spring-damper systems, and the motions of the fluid domain is accounted for by a moving mesh technique (Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation). The consistency of the calculations is demonstrated by comparing the numerical data to the experiments of Gosse et al. (PVP Conference, 2001) in terms of tube amplitude and flow-induced force spectra, for various gap velocities. Investigation of the spectra of the flow-induced forces then shows that the tube motions ignite the emergence of flow phenomena at constant Strouhal numbers. The fluid-structure interactions are also responsible for the existence of a series of tones at rather constant frequencies, corresponding to the vibrational modes of the flexible cell.

Abstract With the drop of oil reservoirs’ natural pressure, and injection of higher amounts of water, predicting energy consumption required to extract multiphase hydrocarbon product, and separate it into crude, gas, and water has become a challenging and more dynamic problem. This paper discusses a detailed technique to forecast energy demand for water injection and Gas-Oil Separation Plant (GOSP). Key elements of the method include identifying the energy, products, and feed streams, along with other parameters impacting the energy demand. The relationships among all independent and dependent variables are identified, along with the consideration of ambient conditions and equipment operating efficiencies. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms are then applied, using available industry software, to build and improve these relationships using the historical data. The best-fit forecast models, also called champion models, are selected that provide the least variance from actual data. These models can be updated, using the software, as the new data is received and variance between predicted and actual energy increases. The forecasted energy demand is converted to CO2 emissions using the conversion factors for fuel gas and power. The forecasting results and underlying process can be converted into dashboards for visualization and utilization by the users of operating plants. The method described in the paper is novel and first of a kind for predicting energy demand and CO2 emissions for a GOSP considering increases in water cut and water-injection.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The objective of this paper is to showcase successful and innovative means and techniques to improve and enhance centrifugal gas compressors (CGCs) performance, using methods to minimize power consumption, with no need for capital investment. These techniques will assure, if effectively followed, considerable reduction of the consumed energy. CGCs are the most widely used equipment in the oil and gas industry to boost gas, mainly hydrocarbons, to satisfy process treatments and pipeline requirements. In addition, CGCs are one of the major energy consumers, and therefore present an exceptional opportunity for saving energy. Focusing on lowering inlet gas temperatures, considering suction throttling of discharge pressure instead of the traditional discharge throttling, will help to reduce energy consumption. In this paper, a detailed analysis of factors aggravate or lead to undesired CGCs performance will be discussed along with solutions to minimize adverse impact. For example, operating the gas compressors at relatively high inlet temperature will result in higher energy consumption. After performing need analysis, results prove that we would save 3-7% of running compressors consumed energy. In addition, during compressor design phase, it was found that most motor driven compressor system uses discharge throttling, which incurs high-energy consumption. Instead, it is recommended to consider suction throttling to control discharge pressure, as will be explained. This paper will focus on a detailed case study in one of the running CGCs in an upstream gas-oil separation plant (GOSP-A). This paper proves the effectiveness of the proposed techniques in reinstating the CGCs in GOSP-A, to ensure better performance and save energy. This innovative technique is based on extensive process data analysis — evaluating operating, design data, related performance curves, and reviewing international standards. It will be illustrated that this type of analysis and techniques is a valuable tool for saving energy, in most cases, at oil and gas industries
