Thesis deals with testing of selected vulnerabilities from the IEC 61850 standard and following design of mitigation measures for selected vulnerabilities. Author simulated vulnerabilities of the GOOSE protocol, NTP attack and attack ona MMS client. Those attacks were GOOSE stNum, GOOSE semantic, GOOSE test bit,GOOSE replay, GOOSE flood, NTP spoofing and MMS password capture. Attacks on protocols GOOSE and MMS were successful, attack on NTP was only partially successful since the device confirmed receiving spoofed time, however it did not change it’s inner clock. Author then designed possible mitigation measures. Tool for automatic testing of selected vulnerabilities, parser for the GOOSE protocol and lightweight multiplatform parser for configuration files were created as well. The outcome of this thesis allows the implementation of lager scale tool for penetration testing of industrial networks as well as it allows implementation of discussed mitigation measures.

Streszczenie:
Using a variety of preparations, (intact birds during treadmill and overground walking/running and free-flight; decerebrate birds during electrically induced walking/running, passive wing flapping, and electrically induced wing flapping and "Active" flight), this thesis examines some of the mechanisms involved in the production and control of locomotor-respiratory coordination (entrainment) during alternating hindlimb locomotion (walking/running) and synchronous forelimb locomotion ("flight") in the Canada goose. Significant coordination of locomotor and respiratory rhythms was observed during both modes of locomotion in intact as well as decerebrate birds. While coordination of forelimb motion and respiration was virtually complete, coordination of hindlimb motion and respiration was sporadic. The level of entrainment during hindlimb locomotion, however, increased with increased stride frequency, rather than increased work rate, suggesting that proprioceptive feedback from the limbs is involved in the production of locomotor-respiratory entrainment. Further evidence for a role of proprioceptive feedback in the production of entrainment was provided by the entrainment of respiration by passive wing motion in decerebrate geese. Although feedback from the periphery was sufficient for the entrainment of wing motion and respiration, motor nerve outputs to the wing and respiratory musculature were also synchronized in paralyzed, decerebrate birds during electrically induced activity, in the complete absence of phasic afferent feedback. Thus, both feedback and feedforward mechanisms appear sufficient for the coordination of wing beat and respiration.

Streszczenie:
This master thesis focuses on problematics of GOOSE messages used for evaluation of blocking conditions of substations in the electrical power plant in Opatovice (EOP). Firstly, the thesis describes the multifunctional electrical protection relay 7SJ64 as well as GOOSE messages, that are run by protocol IEC 61850. Next, it contains a brief description of the energy consumption of EOP itself, since the project was written for its protection relays. In the practical part of the thesis, an experimental network consisting of two distinct substations with three 7SJ64 multifunctional protection relays was designed together with simple blocking conditions. These require information about the state of circuit breakers. The whole communication is carried by GOOSE messages. Moreover, to inform about the loss of GOOSE messages, the logical function SI_GET_S (decoder) was used inside the coding interface of DIGSI programme called CFC. This function was then tested in the experimental network using each different condition, that experienced interruptions of communication caused either by simulated defect of optical cabels, or by „user‘s mistakes“ in the settings of communication parameters in DIGSI. Finally, the system protecting from the loss of GOOSE messages was incorporated into the existing project evaluating blocking conditions in the block substation of EOP.

Streszczenie:
New analytical and technological tools have the potential to yield unprecedented insights into the life histories of migratory species. I used Bayesian population models and Global Positioning System-acceleration tracking devices to understand the demographic mechanism and likely drivers underpinning the Greenland White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons flavirostris) population decline. I used a 27-year capture-mark-recapture dataset from the main wintering site for these birds (Wexford, Ireland) to construct multistate models that estimated age- and sex-specific survival and movement probabilities and found no sex-bias in emigration or ‘remigration’ rates (chapter 2). These formed the foundation for an integrated population model, which included population size and productivity data to assess source-sink dynamics through estimation of age-, site-, and year-specific survival and movement probabilities, the results of which suggest that Wexford is a large sink and that a reduction in productivity (measured as recruitment rate) is the proximate demographic mechanism behind the population decline (chapter 3). Low productivity may be due to environmental conditions on breeding areas in west Greenland, whereby birds bred at youngest ages when conditions were favourable during adulthood and the breeding year (chapter 4), and possibly mediated by links with the social system, as birds remained with parents into adulthood, forfeiting immediate reproductive success, although a cost-benefit model showed the ‘leave’ strategy was marginally favoured over the ‘stay’ strategy at all ages (chapter 5). Foraging during spring does not appear to limit breeding, as breeding and non-breeding birds did not differ in their proportion of time feeding or energy expenditure (chapter 6). Two successful breeding birds were the only tagged individuals (of 15) to even attempt to nest, suggesting low breeding propensity has contributed to low productivity. Although birds wintering in Ireland migrated further to breeding areas than those wintering in Scotland, there were no differences in feeding between groups during spring migration (chapter 7). These findings suggest that Greenland White-fronted Geese are not limited until arrival on breeding areas and the increasingly poor environmental conditions there (chapter 8). More broadly, these findings demonstrate the application of novel tools to diagnose the cause of population decline.

The aim of the thesis was to document patterns in breeding and migration in Swedish Canada geese Branta canadensis, to explain these against the genetic and historical background of the population, and to test predictions of hypotheses pertaining to parental investment. The Canada goose population in Sweden was founded by the introduction of a few individuals in the 1930's. DNA fingerprint similarity between geese breeding in Sweden was on average at the same level as between inbred close relatives in other wild bird species. The genetic variability of the population appeared to be considerably reduced in comparison to that of Canada geese breeding in North America. Dispersal and migration patterns were studied using plastic neck-bands that could be identified at long distance. Most Canada goose females nested at the lake where they grew up. Males were more prone to disperse than females, although most of them still returned to breed close to their area of origin. Geese from three breeding areas in Sweden had different winter distributions, although wintering areas overlapped considerably. Individual geese tended to return to the same wintering area as they had used in previous years. The females' investment in the egg clutch was related to the migration distance from spring foraging areas to the nesting area, suggesting an energetic cost of migration for egg production. Within breeding seasons, clutch size decreased with later initiation of nesting, but only in years with early breeding. A probable reason for this decrease was that body reserves available for egg production were larger in early layers. In years with late breeding, clutch size did not decrease, most likely because late-nesting females could supplement their body reserves by foraging on fresh vegetation. Nest defence intensity was studied by recording the behaviour of the female geese when a human approached the nest. The results largely confirmed predictions for nest defence intensity extracted from parental investment theory.

Streszczenie:
Our knowledge of the Red-breasted goose population has improved considerably over the last 12 years with work carried out in both the breeding and wintering areas. The Romanian and Bulgarian Dobrogea is the main wintering area of the Red-breasted goose. The population size varied considerable during the study period (October 1998 - March 2001) in the wintering area from 41,195 to 88,425. The weather conditions had a strong influence on the number of the geese wintering in the Dobrogea and within the wintering area, the climate conditions influenced their distribution in most years. Geese were spread across the Dobrogea in both inland and coast regions until December. During the coldest period of the winter, in January, the whole population of Red-breasted goose was concentrated on a few lakes located on the Black Sea coast. Some of these major roost sites are protected as reserves. Most frequently, the Red-breasted geese were seen in the Dobrogea in mixed flocks with the White-fronted geese. The geese feed exclusively on crops, mainly on winter wheat but also on barley. In the late autumn in October and November, they preferred newly sown fields where they fed on seeds of winter wheat left on the surface. Later during the winter, the leaves of winter wheat and barley remained the only food available. Geese preferred to feed closer to the roost from December to February but in January, they showed a preference for fields facing east and south. Other landscape variables such as distance to the roads, distance to the villages and slope, were less important. The carrying capacity of the area was calculated and showed that the area cultivated can presently support a larger number of geese. Geese grazing caused losses of yield of on winter wheat causing economic consequences for the farmers. After privatisation, the attitude of farmers towards geese changed. Some guarded their crops, hunted geese or occasionally used poison against geese. Poison was also used more frequently against illegal sheep grazing. This practice is a major concern and affected a number of species. Hunting and farming were the main causes of disturbance during the winter. In Dobrogea, farming activity decreased from November to January. The hunting pressure was constant during the winter and larger at the weekend compared to working days.

I have written about the Battle for Darwin – Goose Green. A battle between 2 Para and Taskforce Mercedes. I have used (de grundläggande förmågorna) six fundamental abilities as an analysis instrument. The questions I am going to answer with this essay are:

-What ability was decisive for 2 Para’s victory?

-What ability was decisive for Taskforce Mercedes defeat?

Initially I will conduct a literature study, followed by a comparative case study.

I have come to the following conclusions:

The Argentines lost due to their lack of a good leadership and

The British won due to the abilities, better trained, better motivated and with more experience. They also, contrary to the Argentines, had leaders that was present and tried to resolve the situations they’ve gotten in to. Streszczenie:
Very little work has been done to study and understand the internal mechanisms that provide goose down with its resiliency under repeated compression. We have employed low magnification optical microscopy to identify some of these important mechanisms. Microscopy showed that a small tertiary structure exists on most goose down fibers and creates an important point of contact when two fibers interact. This tertiary contact mechanism has been coupled with fiber orientation and incorporated into a unique strain-energy function. The principal stresses for an initial compression cycle can be determined from this strain-energy function according to the hyperelastic constitutive theory. Irreversible deformation and hysteresis necessitate another means to determine the stresses during unloading and reloading. For these stages, the framework used by Beatty et al. (2002) for an ideal Mullins material will be utilized in conjunction with a shift in the stress-free state to determine the principal stresses. The proposed model is then evaluated for uniaxial compression and shown to capture the general behavior of goose down in compression including the irreversible deformation and hysteresis.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of Korean "goose" adolescents who attempt to adjust themselves to academic and social environments in Canada. In this study, Korean goose adolescents are defined as those who come to English-speaking countries for a few years to seek out better learning opportunities; their fathers usually stay in Korea to earn money and provide economic support for their families, whereas the mothers take their children abroad to study (Choi, 2005b). Using an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA), the researcher conducted semi-structured and in-depth interviews with four Korean goose adolescents residing in Toronto. Findings revealed that these goose adolescents underwent significant adjustment difficulties. Despite their success in academic areas, they encountered various problems on a social level, due to both English language and cultural differences. However, they sought to develop adjustment strategies by obtaining practical assistance from co-ethnic groups: Korean churches and family members. They also attempted to change themselves into active, open-minded and independent learners. Although they still faced challenges and lacked sufficient support, they showed overall satisfaction with living and studying in Canada.

The behaviour, ecology and energetics of the East Canadian High Arctic light-bellied brent goose (Bronto bernicla hrota) was investigated to determine winter feeding Site selection on Strangford Lough, Co Down, Northern Ireland. The seasonal use of mudflats, saltmarsh and improved pasture was assessed to evaluate the role these habitats play in fulfilling the energy requirements of the geese throughout the wintering period. Brent geese began feeding on eelgrasses Zostera spp. on arrival in late August early September. Single adults arrived first and were in poorer physical condition than paired or family adults which arrived later. Differences in distribution of feeding and physical condition suggests that families are more able than paired or single birds to maintain access to a better quality/quantity food supply over the winter. The activity budget and net energy results highlight the importance of Zostera spp. and the energetic constraints faced by brent geese feeding on Zostera spp. over winter. Position-sensitive radio telemetry provided an accurate and effective method for determining the time spent feeding by individual brent geese throughout the 24hour period in late winter early spring. At this time brent geese rely heavily on the contribution from improved pasture in order to meet their daily net energy . requirement prior to spring migration. Brent geese engaged in night time feeding, exclusively on the mudflats. Night-time feeding occurred from October to April, peaking in mid-winter. This activity appears to be a strategy for the geese to meet their energy requirements during shorter, colder winter days. Feeding on saltmarsh vegetation occurs subsequent to the depletion of Zostera spp. and at a critical time in mid winter and is constrained by the availability and quality, rather than quantity, of the food resource. The study's findings would suggest that for the future conservation of the geese the main conservation requirements for the population is the maintenance of intertidal habitat quality together with the creation of inland refuaes in areas where there may be conflict with agricultural interests.

Thesis (PhD(Food Sc))--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In Southern Africa, the hunting of wildfowl species has increased considerably in the past few years. Crop farmers incur major financial losses due to the feeding activities of Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiacus); consequently a large number of geese are hunted in an attempt to reduce the damage caused. With the current absence of scientific information baseline research investigating the meat quality of this species is essential. The sensory profile of Egyptian goose meat was found to be very distinct in relation to the characteristics of other well-known fowl species. It has very strong game aroma and flavour attributes with a prominent metallic aftertaste. The intense aroma and flavour notes were linked to the substantially higher iron content, as well as the high overall polyunsaturated fatty acid content as revealed by chemical profiling. The trained sensory panel also found the meat to be very tough (high shear force) compared to the other species. To identify the factors which may affect the overall consistency of the meat quality, the influence of three main effects namely; season (grain vs. non-grain diet), gender and portion was investigated. This revealed that season had the largest effect and harvesting periods should therefore be considered. The main issue is the higher intramuscular fat (IMF) content in winter (July), as well as the substantial difference in the fatty acid profiles of the two seasons. The forage vs. grain based diets during certain periods of the year leads to variation in the content of key fatty acids in the meat i.e. oleic acid, linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid. In winter, the meat had a characteristic, prominent game and metallic aroma while the summer (November) profile was governed by “sweet-oily-duck” and beef-like sensory notes. The fatty acid differences also result in variation between the omega 6 to omega 3 ratios of the seasons; the portions from winter are within the recommendations (ratio<5) and those from summer not. Regarding gender, the females had a lower carcass yield but higher IMF content. The female breast portion was also more tender (lower shear force). In attempting to elucidate the toughness of the meat, possible causes have been proposed. The pH decline in the pectoralis muscle occurs quite rapidly and it is possible that the high rigor temperature (>20 °C) may contribute to the increased toughness. Regardless of the proteolytic enzyme activity during the rigor period, the meat is still tough at 36 h post mortem and the proteolytic contribution may be overshadowed by the background toughness, i.e. the connective tissue content and fibre structure. The latter was confirmed when the breast portions were aged for 14 days and no change (decline) in the shear force values was observed even though myofibrillar degradation did occur (during ageing). Given the lack of a decline in the shear force, the aging of Egyptian goose meat as a means of improving the overall toughness cannot be proposed without further research. The study in its entirety provides substantial proof that the commercial utilisation of Egyptian goose meat is feasible.

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) recently have become management problems in some areas due to overpopulation At Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). managers are concerned with the opposite situation Despite attempts to boost production, only 18 to 34 goslings of the western Canada goose (B. c. moffitti) were produced per year, from 1989 to 1993. I studied the breeding population from March to July in 1996 and 1997. Results suggest that production is limited in 3 ways: low gosling survival. low nesting success for ground nests, and low number of breeding pairs Gosling survival to fledging was 25% in 1996 and 52% in 1997. I examined the potential causes of low gosling survival, especially the effects of saline drinking water. Specific conductivities in the spring-fed marshes of the desert refuge range from 3.0 to 25.0+ μS/cm. conducted an experiment on captive wild-strain goslings. Three groups received different levels of saline \\ater as measured by specific conductivity: control (0 63 μS/cm), intermediate 12.0 ~1Slcm). and high (18.0 ~1Slcm) I found mortality only at the high level Effects on growth were growth were evident at both the intermediate and high levels, although statistically significant only at the high level. To examine the effects of saline drinking water on survival of free-ranging wild goslings, I collared and radio marked breeding adults, then monitored brood location and gosling numbers. I found that mortality was independent of specific conductivity levels on the brood-rearing impoundments. Observations suggest that the primary causes of low gosling survival involve predation and human disturbance. l compared my results lo the results of other studies. Accuracy of results appears to be related to the estimation technique used. Radio tracking of broods has the potential to be very accurate. Al Fish Springs NWR. l monitored nesting pairs. nests, and broods throughout the breeding season. Ground nests had lower nesting success in both years (56%: 41 %) than artificial nesting platforms (90%, 83%). The number of nesting pairs was 26 and 34 in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Based on these results, l made several management recommendations, including installing more artificial nesting platforms. and minimizing human disturbance.

Streszczenie:
The separation of water and fat from multi-echo images is a classic problem in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a wide range of important clinical applications. For example, removal of fat signal can provide better visualization of other signal of interest in MRI scans. In other cases, the fat distribution map can be of great importance in diagnosis. Although many methods have been proposed over the past three decades, robust fat water separation remains a challenge as radiological technology and clinical expectation continue to grow. The problem presents three key difficulties: a) the presence of B0 field inhomogeneities, often large in the state-of-the-art research and clinical settings, which makes the problem non-linear and ill-posed; b) the ambiguity of signal modeling in locations with only one metabolite (either fat or water), which can manifest as spurious fat water swaps in the separation; c) the computational expenditure in fat water separation as the size of the data is increasing along with evolving MRI hardware, which hampers the clinical applicability of the fat water separation. The main focus of this thesis is to develop novel graph based algorithms to estimate the B0 field inhomogeneity maps and separate fat water signals with global accuracy and computational efficiency. We propose a new smoothness constrained framework for the GlObally Optimal Surface Estimation (GOOSE), in which the spatial smoothness of the B0 field is modeled as a finite constraint between adjacent voxels in a uniformly discretized graph. We further develop a new non-equidistant graph model that enables a Rapid GlObally Optimal Surface Estimation (R-GOOSE) in a subset of the fully discretized graph in GOOSE. Extensions of the above frameworks are also developed to achieve high computational efficiency for processing large 3D datasets. Global convergence of the optimization formulation is proven in all frameworks. The developed methods have also been extensively compared to the existing state-of-the-art fat water separation methods on a variety of datasets with consistent performance of high accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract Analyses of mitochondrial control region sequences were used to infer phylogeny of Anser species, phylogeography of the lesser white-fronted goose, and genetic background of a captive stock. The genetic distances among the Anser species ranged from 0.9 to 5.5% in the complete control region sequences and supported the view of close relatedness of these species. Among the four most closely related species, the bean, pink-footed, white-fronted and lesser white-fronted goose, the branching order is uncertain. The short internal branches and low support for the branching order suggest that the species have diverged recently within short time-intervals. The mtDNA tree obtained is incongruent with the traditional view of the species relationships, but the reasons for this remain to be clarified. Two diverged mitochondrial lineages were found in the lesser white-fronted goose and a refugial origin was proposed. Basal haplotypes are geographically widespread and indicate a recent common ancestry for populations. The derived haplotypes are confined to singular breeding populations and suggest restrictions to the present female gene flow. A shift in the frequency of the mtDNA lineages approximately coincides with a migratory divide in the Taimyr Peninsula. Low mtDNA diversity and significant difference in the haplotype frequencies observed in Fennoscandian subpopulation suggested that it should be considered as a management unit. The fossil record was examined to gain additional information about the colonisation history of the species, but was found to be of limited use. The captive lesser white-fronted goose stock used for reintroduction/restocking was shown to be incompatible with the Fennoscandian wild population. Some captive individuals carried the mtDNA of the white-fronted goose suggesting a hybrid origin. Hybridisation has probably occurred during captive propagation, but to clarify further the extent of introgression, nuclear markers should be applied. The structure and evolution of the control region were studied by comparing complete avian sequences. Saturation was found to occur at pairwise divergences of 10% as shown for third codon positions of the mitochondrial genes previously. In pairwise comparisons of the control region and cytochrome b sequences, the rate of divergence varied among the lineages. Two conserved sequence blocks showed considerable sequence conservation when compared to mammalian sequences.

Scott, Graham. "Evolution of respiratory physiology for extreme high-altitude flight in the bar-headed goose". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13075.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Bar-headed geese migrate over the Himalayas at up to 9000m elevation where they must sustain the high metabolic rates needed for flight despite being severely hypoxic. The present thesis studied the respiratory physiology of this species to better understand the basis for this impressive feat. Evolutionary changes important for high altitude flight were deduced by comparing bar-headed geese to several low altitude species (greylag geese, pink-footed geese, barnacle geese, mallard ducks, or pekin ducks). Theoretical modelling of the O2 transport pathway was first used to determine traits with the greatest influence over O2 transport in hypoxia. This suggested that a heightened capacity to increase ventilation, a high haemoglobin O2 affinity, and an enhanced O2 diffusing capacity in the muscle should be most influential for enhancing O2 supply. Therefore, the remainder of this thesis tested the general hypothesis that these traits have evolved in bar-headed geese. Total ventilation was higher in bar-headed geese than in low altitude waterfowl during severe environmental hypoxia. This was entirely due to larger tidal volumes, which should have further enhanced effective ventilation of the gas exchange surface and thus increased O2 loading and arterial O2 tension. Two primary mechanisms accounted for this difference, (i) a reduction in metabolic depression during hypoxia and (ii) a blunted chemosensitivity to respiratory hypocapnia. These studies also supported previous research showing that bar-headed geese have a higher haemoglobin O2 affinity. Oxygen diffusing capacity in the flight muscle was also enhanced in bar-headed geese. This was due to an increased number of capillaries surrounding each muscle fiber and a redistribution of mitochondria within these fibers towards the cell membrane, closer to capillaries. There were also slight increases in aerobic capacity and alterations in the control of mitochondrial respiration, which could help sustain ATP turnover during prolonged flight in hypoxia. This thesis has shown that high altitude adaptation in bar-headed geese has involved a suite of evolutionary changes at multiple steps in the O2 transport pathway. This work provides important insights into how respiratory systems evolve, and helps explain the incredible ability of bar-headed geese to fly at extremely high altitudes.

This thesis addresses New Orleans' "Bio-Med" sector, a broad category that includes biosciences research, health care, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing. Biotechnology, in particular, has emerged as an attractive target for economic development in New Orleans, in Louisiana, and in the nation as a whole. Informed by economic geography and development literature, this research presents a narrative of efforts to foster the Bio-Med industries in New Orleans as a source of economic diversification and employment. Structural economic conditions, as well as a complex and unsettled array of political agendas shaping Bio-Med institutions, underscore a pessimistic view of the potential for biotechnology to generate significant economic impacts. Since Katrina exacerbated these conditions, Bio-Med strategies should direct more attention to the health care industry and specifically to addressing workforce gaps to meet the twin goals of expanding health coverage and providing realistic employment opportunities for underserved populations.

Streszczenie:
Ben Jonson wrote Volpone when England's pamphlet wars and the rule of Queen Elizabeth I contributed to an environment in which the <">woman question<"> was forefront in many minds. These social concerns echo in Volpone, resulting in a play that not only deals with vices and greed, but that also, to a limited degree, contributes to the querelle de femmes. The play's numerous animal metaphors create distinctions between characters; among other things, animalistic surnames represent the vices and complexities of humanity, and, more specifically, reverberate with judgments that seem to underscore the injustices of misogynistic pamphleteers. Moreover, Jonson's characters Bonario and Celia represent the ideal images of manhood and womanhood and are armed with various virtues that allow them to overcome trials. Ultimately, when read in the context of the Early Modern pamphlet wars, Volpone's animal metaphors form a conservative defense of women that condemns misogyny and advocates a partnership between virtuous men and women for the sake of moral social order.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Anthropogenic pressures have caused changes in both the mean and variance of environmental conditions, with associated effects on the demography of natural populations. The demographic effects of environmental change can manifest through direct (i.e., physiological) or indirect pathways (i.e., through shifts in species interactions). For many populations, environmental change will affect multiple life cycle stages simultaneously, thereby altering vital rate correlation structures with potentially important impacts on evolutionary fitness. The effects of environmental change will also often be habitat-specific, particularly when species interactions modify demographic sensitivity to climate. As a result, the effects of climate change are likely to vary across a species range, with important implications for range expansion and population viability. In chapter 2, I examine the effects of joint vital rate responses to environmental drivers on the evolution of life histories in variable environments. I show that vital rate covariation, generated when multiple vital rates respond to a shared environmental driver, can fundamentally alter evolutionary selection pressures. Negative vital rate covariation promotes the evolution of demographic lability (stronger demographic responsiveness), while positive covariation promotes buffering (weaker demographic responsiveness), altering the range of life histories over which the evolution of buffered and labile vital rates are a predicted evolutionary outcome. By identifying the life histories for which selection pressures are most sensitive to environmentally-driven vital rate covariation, this study provides a richer understanding of both life history evolution and the capacity of species to cope with ongoing changes to contemporary environments. In chapter 3, I use a long-term study of lesser snow geese to test the hypothesis that demographic and developmental responses to climate will be weakest in habitats where resource diversity is greatest. I find support for this hypothesis, and my results indicate that gosling demography is much more responsive to climate in recently colonized, freshwater habitats where landscape diversity and gosling diet diversity is low. These results underscore the potential importance of accounting for biotic interactions when predicting spatio-temporal responses to climate. In chapter 4, I quantify the consequences of observed climate change for lesser snow goose population dynamics across habitats. I find that climate change increases population growth in all habitats, but that such increases are disproportionately large in novel inland freshwater habitats. These results suggest that in a warmer and more variable climate, the breeding range and population growth of lesser snow geese is likely to increase, counteracting current management efforts to reduce overabundant populations.

Due to their low-lying position near the shoreline, river deltas are vulnerable to fluctuations in relative sea-level (RSL). Moreover, relatively little is known about fluvio-deltaic dynamics during RSL fall because the resulting deposits have low preservation potential. In this paper, I present a field-based study of the Goose River delta, coupled with numerical model simulations, that investigates the fluvio-deltaic response to RSL fall. The Goose River delta is a sandy fjord delta at the mouth of the Goose River located at the western end of Lake Melville, an inlet of the Labrador Sea, Canada and has experienced a RSL fall of 3 to 6 mm/yr in the past 5000 years due to post-glacial isostatic rebound. Aerial images show three abandoned delta lobes and one active lobe, suggesting that avulsions and lobe-switching occurred during RSL fall. Elevation analysis using Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) data and optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating suggest that a series of downstepping terraced delta lobes formed at the mouth of the Goose River during a period of RSL fall. Similarly, Delft3D model runs show continued avulsions and formation of multiple terraced delta lobes deposited at progressively lower elevations. I show computationally that by decreasing delta lobe widths, deltas may remain aggradational during RSL fall, creating conditions favorable for lobe-switching during RSL fall. Observations from the field and model runs provide a critical link in understanding the geomorphic processes occurring during RSL fall, and in particular show that 1) incision and sediment bypass is not a necessary response to RSL fall and 2) lateral migration of a delta via avulsion can continue to occur with falling sea-level

Non-native waterbird populations are increasing through much of Europe with some species showing conspicuously successful invasions. Much uncertainty surrounds the potential impacts of invasive waterbirds on native waterbird communities and wetlands. Understanding the processes and phases of population and range expansion of non-native waterbirds, and their environmental drivers, is an important research topic to inform management of these species. This study investigates the trajectories of population and range expansion of the Egyptian Goose (Alopachen aegypticus) across the UK between 1993 and 2014, and the environmental and spatial drivers of population density and site occupancy for three representative time periods, using the British Trust for Ornithology’s Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) data. Egyptian Goose showed an accelerating rate of occupancy of new grid cells (at 20-km resolution) over the time period of the study. There is no apparent reduction in the rate of spread of this species, insofar as through time there is an increase of both grid cell occupancy and of wetland area occupancy, although in the latter stages of expansion (post-2003) it appears that there is more of a filling out effect going on, at the same time as the increased rate of expansion. Environmental models supported the a priori hypothesis that waterbodies have a negative association with densities of Egyptian Goose, which was born out in the results. Environmental models also showed that rainfall was consistently negatively associated with density and presence/absence, whilst stately homes were shown to be consistently positively associated.

Streszczenie:
Resident Canada goose (Branta canadensis) populations have increased in urbanizing regions of the eastern United States, where man-made ponds and lakes surrounded by managed turfgrass offer ideal habitats. High concentrations of geese in these areas may cause feces accumulation, outbreaks of zoonotic diseases, eutrophication of adjacent waterways, and spread of turfgrass weeds. Although repellents effectively deter geese from turfgrass areas, frequent mowing (e.g., as in corporate parks and golf courses) may impact the efficacy of repellents. We tested the effect of 2 different mowing schedules on the longevity of FlightControl® PLUS (FCP), an anthraquinone based avian digestive irritant. From June 2007 to October 2008, we conducted 4, 30-day experiments of repellent efficacy on free-ranging geese at 8 sites. Sites were divided into 4 0.1-ha plots, each containing a unique treatment of the repellent (treated or untreated) and mowing frequency (4-day or 8-day). Each experimental session consisted of a 7-day pretreatment period of baseline observations and 30 days of post-treatment observations. Goose droppings were collected daily from transects in each plot, and percent of grass with FCP remaining was measured daily. Also, we tested 234 droppings for Giardia lamblia using a ProSpect Giardia EZ Microplate Assay, measured amounts of nitrogen (TKN) and phosphorus (TP) in 304 fecal samples, and observed 127 potted droppings for plant germination in a greenhouse. On average, goose use of FCP treated plots was lower than on untreated plots for 30 days. Over the 30 day period, goose use and FCP coverage was similar between treated plots mowed every 4 and 8 days. Further, the average FCP coverage on grass blades in treated plots decreased steadily from approximately 95% to 10%. None of the fecal samples tested positive for Giardia. The average amounts of TKN and TP in fecal samples were 24.2 mg/g (range = 12.6 â 55.7) and 3.6 mg/g (range = 1.4 â 8.3) of dry matter, respectively, with an average of 4,318.0 g/ha/day deposited by â42 geese. No controls germinated plants, whereas 4 (3.1%) fecal samples germinated plants: Pennsylvania smartweed (Polygonum pennsylvanicum L.), annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.), and 2 Kyllinga spp. FlightControl® PLUS effectively repelled Canada geese, but longevity of the chemical depends on keeping treated blades alive and under mowing height. Transmission of G. lamblia by Canada geese does not appear to be a high risk. Resident Canada goose droppings at our study sites contribute 17 â 31% of recommended N and 17 â 38% of recommended P in lawn fertilization rates. Kyllinga spp. and annual bluegrass are turfgrass weeds; however the low percentage of germinations indicates little risk of turf-feeding Canada goose weed dispersal. I recommend using FCP on areas of highest goose concentration before and when they are most prevalent. This should be done along with reduction of palatable turfgrass and annual lethal reductions. Fertilization rates should be adjusted depending on the number of geese present and the concentration of their droppings in order to save money and prevent eutrophication. Periodic testing of goose droppings for Giardia lamblia and weed seeds may prevent infestations. Research is needed to find the optimal mowing rate to keep treated blades alive and below mowing height. Information on the movements of resident Canada geese will be important for management of free-ranging populations. Identifying or developing turfgrasses that are unpalatable to Canada geese would be highly useful. If geese test positive for Giardia sp. cysts, trophozoites should be collected to identify species. The alternative to this method is to develop species specific assays. Also, research is needed on the result of resident Canada goose fecal nitrogen and phosphorus deposition on adjacent water quality.

This thesis reinvents the current homogenized horizontality along the American highways by inserting a new typology of verticality along the existing horizontal sprawl. The project focuses upon the ever-growing commercialization and urban sprawl along a 181-mile strip of I.H.10, which runs from Jennings, Louisiana to Houston, Texas. In this landscape the sign has become the most dominant feature, while architecture has become simply an empty shell. There is no focal point along the highway today, only the aspiration of the sign to be higher than any inhabitable structure around it. This project proposes the insertion of 6 vertical elements into this horizontal landscape by taking the existing program and signs directly adjacent to the highway and relocating them into specified locations along I.H.10. These new densified nodes will further be defined through differentiated scales of perception through architecture and design.

Taxon-specific -crystallin, the major soluble protein component of the avian and reptilian eye lens, is considered to play a structural role in maintaining a high refractory index while ensuring transparency. However, the most astounding relationship is an evolutionary strategy of gene sharing that the taxon specific crystallins seems to be present in which the same gene product is utilized in dual function as a lens crystallin and as an enzyme in non-lens tissues. These sequence similarities such as the -crystallins are closely related to argininosuccinate lyase. -Crystallin and ASL are a superfamily of metabolic enzymes that catalyze the reversible cleavage of argininosuccinate to arginine and fumarate. ASL is one of the cytosolic enzymes of the urea cycle in ureagenic animals. -Crystallin is the member of the small heat shock protein family and function as a molecular chaperone-like activity in preventing the non specific thermal aggregation of lens proteins. In addition, -Crystallin consists of two polypeptide chains, A and B. In the present study, we used the temperature-dependent to investigate the effect of recombinant goose A- and B-crystallins on recombinant goose -crystallin and HASL. At 25°C, the addition of A and B led to 103% and 130% increase in the specific activity of HASL, respectively. It is found that the optimal temperature of HASL was at 40°C brought about 149% in the specific activity, whereas the specific activity was about 7% at 60°C. In contrast, HASL is stabled up to approximately 50°C in the presence of A and B, and even has about 17% and 31% at 60°C, respectively. Conditions for incubation of -crystallin and HASL were set at room temperature for 1 hr that is determined through time and temperature dependent assays of ASL activity in the presence of A and B. The tryptophan fluorescence experiments of HASLWT on A show significantly decreased at about 30% ~ 50%. Under the temperature-dependent conditions, the protection effect of B on -crystallin is more remarkable than A. In addition, calibrated S-200 size exclusion chromatography revealed that -crystallin and HASL in the presence of B form a stable complex.

There are a lot of related analysis in the chicken farm. For example, calculate egg size and determine fertilized egg, but rarely experimenting in goose farms. The amount of eggs laid by a goose can represent the health status of the goose. It can also be used to select goose suitable for breeding. If the number of eggs is abnormal, special observation is required to confirm whether the virus is infected. This paper develops an egg production analysis system for goose farms. In this system, each goose worn a unique RFID foot ring, when it enter goose cage, record RFID information and record the time of this goose stay in. Use a camera to monitor the eggs in the scroll. We combined movement direction and CNN(YOLOv3). Analysis of goose egg production in a goose farm environment filled with various noises (e.g. spider webs, goose feathers, mice...). The experiment shows that the accuracy of the system reaches 96%.
