The present article compares the two principal received editions of the Gongsun Longzi in the Daozang and the Shuofu collections. Exploring the considerable number of textual variants between these two editions, the analysis challenges the acknowledged status of the Daozang as the superior version. Instead, both the Daozang and the Shuofu editions are at times inferior or superior to one another. Therefore, in the interpretation of the Gongsun Longzi both editions need to be consulted in order to unravel certain obscure passages. Altogether, due to the generally high degree of coherence between the two editions, the understanding of the Gongsun Longzi is significantly affected by textual variants only in a limited number of cases. This further suggests that the Daozang and Shuofu editions do not represent two separate lines of transmission but rather two textual witnesses of a common line. Cet article compare les deux principales éditions reçues du Gongsun Longzi, recueillies respectivement dans le Daozang et dans le Shuofu. L’analyse des multiples variantes textuelles entre les deux versions conduit à remettre en question la supériorité généralement admise de celle du Daozang. En réalité, chacune des deux éditions est suivant les cas supérieure ou inférieure à l’autre. Pour interpréter le Gongsun Longzi il convient par conséquent de consulter l’une et l’autre si l’on veut éclaircir certains passages obscurs. Dans la mesure où dans l’ensemble les deux éditions présentent un degré élevé de cohérence entre elles, les cas où la compréhen­sion du texte est affectée de façon significative par les variantes restent finalement peu nombreux. This work addresses the critical discussion featured in the contemporary literature about two well-known paradoxes belonging to different philosophical traditions, namely Frege’s puzzling claim that “the concept horse is not a concept” and Gongsun Long’s “white horse is not horse”. We first present the source of Frege’s paradox and its different interpretations, which span from plain rejection to critical analysis, to conclude with a more general view of the role of philosophy as a fight against the misunderstandings that come from the different uses of language (a point later developed by the “second” Wittgenstein). We then provide an overview of the ongoing discussions related to the Bai Ma Lun paradox, and we show that its major interpretations include—as in the case of Frege’s paradox—dismissive accounts that regard it as either useless or wrong, as well as attempts to interpret and repair the argument. Resting on our reading of Frege’s paradox as an example of the inescapability of language misunderstandings, we advance a similar line of interpretation for the paradox in the Bai Ma Lun: both the paradoxes, we suggest, can be regarded as different manifestations of similar concerns about language, and specifically about the difficulty of referring to concepts via language.

Le questionnement de la philosophie s’est traduit par des lieux communs de problèmes et d’arguments dont l’intelligence ne dépend pas de leur expression dans une langue particulière. On veut faire reconnaître par cet article un tel locus communis philosophiae dans l’argument de Gongsun Long de 公孫龍, d’après lequel « cheval blanc n’est pas cheval ». Gongsun Long, déjà assimilé à un « disputeur » en Chine, a été exilé du champ de la philosophie en Europe en tant que « sophiste ». On montre pourtant que son argument concerne un problème analogue à celui qui a conduit Aristote à faire la distinction entre prédication essentielle et accidentelle ou celui qui a conduit Husserl à parler de ce que vise l’« intuition catégoriale ». Mais la leçon proprement chinoise de son propos tient peut-être alors en son indifférence au choix entre le primat de l’être sur la conscience, selon Aristote, ou de la conscience sur l’être, selon Husserl.

Il presente lavoro si pone come obiettivo il gettare nuova luce sulla struttura e il contenuto del Gongsun Longzi, concentrandosi in particolare sui cosiddetti “capitoli originali”, ovvero quelli considerati i più fedeli ad una ipotetica formulazione originaria – scritta e/od orale - degli argomenti discussi, il Baima Lun ed il Zhiwu Lun. Dopo aver preso il considerazione la figura pseudo-storica dell’autore putativo, Gongsun Long, viene fornita un’analisi della struttura complessiva del testo, incluso anche un accurato studio delle variati testuali esistenti tra le due versioni più antiche del testo ricevuto (le edizioni dello Shuofu e del Daozang). Infine, un’esaustiva trattazione dei contenuti filosofici del Baima Lun e del Zhiwu Lun, corredata da una traduzione commentata, chiude il lavoro
The present work aims at shading new light on the structure and content of the Gongsun Longzi, focusing in particular on the so-called “original chapters”, those who are considered more truthful to an hypothetical original formulation – written and/or oral – of the topics discussed, the Baima Lun and the Zhiwu Lun. After taking into consideration the pseudo-historical figure of the putative author, the persuader Gongsun Long, an analysis of the overall structure of the text is provided, comprehending an accurate study of textual variants existing between the two most ancients versions available of the received text (the Shuofu and the Daozang edition). Finally, an exhaustive treatment of the philosophical contents of the Baima Lun and Zhiwu Lun, accompanied with a commented translation, concludes the work.

Ce travail propose la traduction et le commentaire de l'ensemble des textes par lesquels nous a été transmis l’enseignement de Gongsun Long 公孫龍 (320-250) axé sur la question de la « rectitude » ou « correction » des noms. Pour éclairer ce débat dont les termes ne peuvent être directement transcrits dans le langage de la logique, de la linguistique ou de la philosophie moderne, on a cherché à reconstituer les préoccupations de « l’école des noms » mingjia 名家. Dans une époque de désordre social, cette école a repensé l’exigence confucéenne de la rectitude des noms en liaison avec le besoin de classification des termes en l’étendant à des intérêts précis, aussi bien dans le domaine de l’application des lois, que des définitions et de la nature. Dans ce contexte historique le Gongsun Longzi 公孫龍子peut se comprendre comme visant à accomplir définitivement le projet de l’école des noms mais dans une forme originale et étrangère aux différents modes d’argumentation de l’époque. Gongsun Long serait ainsi, à sa manière, le penseur d’un moment de crise dans la transmission de la tradition confucéenne. Sa méthode l’a éloigné de ses devanciers mais aussi de ses contemporains, sans qui pourtant nous ne pourrions le comprendre, et ses successeurs se sont écartés de lui comme d’une sorte d’imposteur, sans peut-être l’avoir compris. Par les éclaircissements qu’il tente d’apporter à ce destin singulier, ce travail propose donc les rudiments d’une « apologie de Gongsun Long », qui essaie finalement de rendre compréhensible et « logiquement acceptable » toute la profondeur de la pensée de la désignation, dont on s’efforce de montrer que, jusque dans le style paradoxal qu’elle requiert pour son expression, elle est inséparable et même révélatrice d’une originalité de la langue chinoise, qu’elle contribue fortement à mettre en lumière
This work provides a translation with commentary of all remaining texts by which we can know the learning of Gongsun Long 公孫龍 (320 – 250 BC). His main concern was about “correction of names”, a topic commonly disputed at the time of Warring Kingdoms, but the meaning of which cannot easily appear in the language of logic, linguistics or philosophy of our time. This is why our work had to include an historical survey of the School of Names in its debates about this topic, firstly proceeding from Confucius lessons. In that time of violent public troubles, the confucianist claim for correctedness of names was connected by this school with precise needs of classification, for the sake of applying laws, defining terms, and rhetoric. The Gongsun Longzi 公孫龍子purpose may be understood as an attempt to fulfil the project of School of Names, but in a so freshly new form and strange style in this time that Gongsun Long gives us a witness of a moment of crisis in history of the confucianist tradition. Because of his method, he stood aside from previous and contemporary thinkers, and posterity indeed threw some contempt on him as if guilty of delusion. Trying to enlighten so sad a fate, our work is pleading for some “apology for Gongsun Long”, in order to make sense of his deep study of meaning, and show how the paradoxes required for his expression give strong evidence for the original character of Chinese language itself

This chapter talks about Fuchai, who was the last king of Wu. According to Sima Qian, Fuchai was a complicated and tragic figure who avenged his father's death, defeated Wu's long time rival Yue, extended Wu's influence to the north, and led Wu to become a political hegemon among the states. It focuses on the fall of the king of Wu by highlighting Fuchai's obstinance, his trust of dishonest words, his executions of loyal ministers, and the eventual decline of his state. It also omits the early successful years of King Fuchai and begins with the eleventh year of his rule, the year he ignored the most dangerous enemy Yue in the south and extended his power north by attacking the state of Qi. The chapter concludes with Fuchai's reluctant suicide that was preceded by expressions of remorse for killing Wu Zixu and Gongsun Sheng.
