Crime waves make great headlines, and can be an ongoing source of stories for news media. In this article, we track the news media promotion of the spectre of a crime wave at Queensland's Gold Coast and the interplay between politics and policy responses to the media campaign. By analysing news media reports, government, local government and police-documented responses, we explore how the media framed this crime wave and the politically driven policy responses that were disproportionate to the reported (statistical) level of crime. Despite attempts by the Queensland Police Service to defuse the claims of an out-of-control crime problem, followed by its attempts at managing community responses, the local news media continued their campaign with significant consequences. Our findings are important for those charged with publicly managing responses to media-driven crime waves.

This paper reports the salvage excavations of a shell midden at Hope Island, Gold Coast City, southeast Queensland. Archaeological investigations were carried out in the Gold Coast region during the late 1960s and early 1970s (e.g. Haglund-Calley and Quinnell 1973; Haglund 1975, 1976), but as academic input into the area waned it became something of a folk theory in the mainstream Anglo-Saxon community that nothing worthwhile in the way of archaeological evidence remained in the area. The Kombumerri people, traditional owners who have never ceded title to their land, knew differently. This paper follows an extensive site recording program undertaken by the Kombumerri Cultural Centre and the Anthropology Museum, University of Queensland, which has clearly demonstrated the correctness of their view: material evidence of significance to the local Aboriginal community abounds within the Gold Coast City limits and its environs.

This paper sets out the design criteria used by the Gold Coast City Council in the design of its sewage treatment and disposal system. Tourism is the City's major industry and the City's raw sewage is almost completely domestic in its nature. The quantity and quality of the raw sewage are discussed and parameters defined for treatment. Unpolluted beaches and waterways are an essential part of the tourism image and the effluent standards required by the Water Quality Council of Queensland and the method of disposal and effluent standards adopted by Gold Coast City Council are discussed.

AbstractThis article consolidates the pros and cons of the two common modelling techniques for economic impact analysis: the input–output multiplier and the computable general equilibrium (CGE) technique. The latter is recommended for large event assessment and was used to examine the economic impacts of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Games is estimated to have generated approximately A$2.5 billion of gross state product (GSP) to Queensland after netting out the costs incurred. The effect is spread over a period of nine years from pre-Games period of preparation for the Games, through the Games period itself, and then rather significantly in the post-Games period. While benefits accrue to Queensland, the rest of Australia is estimated to lose due to the so-called ‘crowding out effect’.

Debates over water and related issues have become prominent in twenty-first century Australia, where global warming is combining with climatic extremes to produce a volatile public and politics. The specific context of the Gold Coast Desalination Project, to be analysed here, was a prolonged drought earlier in the decade that reduced dams in densely populated South-East Queensland to unprecedented levels. This situation in turn triggered water rationing and uncertainty about the capacity of existing infrastructure to supply one of the fastest-growing areas of Australia. During the crisis, the Queensland state government was criticised in the press for mismanagement of water resources before the drought, and for the inadequate water situation, which ultimately led to the construction of a desalination plant. The period of this study covers the plant's construction and implementation. Capable of providing up to 125 million litres of clean, fresh drinking water to the South-East Queensland region every day, the desalination plant — which remains politically contentious — began in 2006 and was operational in early 2009.

This paper describes the fulfillment of a design brief for a tidal exchange system for lakes within a golf course on the Queensland Gold Coast to maintain aesthetic appeal while retaining approximately constant water levels. Secondary objectives of minimal maintenance, yet ability of the system to support water based recreation were also defined. To achieve the above, a simulation of potential lake layouts and their tidal hydraulics was achieved using ‘ESTRY', a hydrodynamic modelling program developed by Winders, Barlow and Morrison. Output from the model defined the necessary design criteria. This allowed significant cost savings in civil works to be achieved during construction and minimal ongoing maintenance costs in the developed golf course complex. Confirmation of fulfillment of the design criteria has been provided by the satisfactory agreement between predicted model results and actual characteristics of the lakes and the results of a water quality monitoring program.

The issue regarding sustainability has emerged significantly in the construction industry. The appealing concept and the future benefits of sustainability have enamoured people to implement this notion progressively. This situation resulted in a trend in the architectural and engineering world. The Gold Coast city, which is located in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland, is one of the world leading examples in which a government has put a green legacy as the concern in its development. One of the implementations of its sustainability concept is described in its waste management. This study explores the waste management in Gold Coast city in three stages of the project life cycle (PLC): design, construction, and operation. The cost-benefit analysis in qualitative and quantitative approach will be employed to provide the explanation of cost reduction that is achieved by the implementation of specific actions. However, the result of this study shows that the implementation of waste management does not only benefit in cost, but also many other aspects such as energy, built-environment, diversity, carbon critical design, and community lifestyle. This exploration can be the reference to the best practice of sustainability concept implementation in waste management.

AbstractEvidence is emerging regarding the influence of meteorological factors on seasonal respiratory syncytial virus outbreaks. Data however, are limited for subtropical regions, especially in the southern hemisphere. We examined whether meteorological data (daily minimum and maximum temperatures, rainfall, relative humidity, dew point, daily global solar exposure) and tourist numbers were associated with the incidence of RSV in children aged <5 years for the Gold Coast region of South-East Queensland, Australia (latitude 28.0°S). RSV cases between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2016 were identified from the Pathology Queensland Gold Coast Laboratory database. Time-series methods were used to identify seasonal patterns. RSV activity peaked in mid-to-late autumn (April–May), tapering in winter (June–August). While most meteorological variables measured were associated with RSV incidence, rainfall (ρ = 0.40, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.32–0.48) and humidity (ρ = 0.38, 95% CI 0.29–0.46) 8 weeks earlier had the nearest temporal relationship. Tourist numbers were not correlated with RSV activity. Identifying meteorological conditions associated with seasonal RSV epidemics can improve understanding of virus transmission and assist planning for their impact upon the health sector, including timing of passive RSV immunoprophylaxis for high-risk infants and future public health interventions, such as maternal immunisation with RSV vaccines.

In response to concerns about the number of interstate and overseas visitors using Queensland hospital services, the present study examined a sample of 1,295 hospital records to determine the proportion of patients who were incorrectly identified as Queensland residents. Across six hospitals the overall detection rate was 4.6%. Rates varied between hospitals, with the highest detection recorded for Goondiwindi near the Queensland/New South Wales border; and the lowest for Prince Charles in Brisbane. There were also important variations across hospitals based on specific holiday periods. In particular, Goondiwindi and the Gold Coast had substantially higher detection rates for the Christmas holiday period (December-January) than for the mid-year period (June-August). These findings are discussed in terms of their implications for hospital services, especially lost revenue and increased patient load. Health information managers are identified as a key group for addressing some of the current problems in this area.

The development of a Queensland-wide videoconferencing network provided an opportunity to develop telepathology. In 1999, weekly videoconferences began with remote laboratories and clinical staff in four peripheral hospitals and the Royal Brisbane Hospital and in 2000 biweekly videoconference pathology grand rounds started across Queensland with up to six sites, from Cairns to the Gold Coast, joining in or presenting. The average number of sites connected was 3.0 in 1998, 3.5 in 1999, 4.4 in 2000 and 4.5 in 2001. Problems included the complexity of the system, timing and need for bookings, coordination of presenters and presentations, and the time needed to organize sessions, set up linkages, advertise sessions and attend the telepathology conference. Successful meetings have been associated with well prepared cases, time for discussion, attendance by all sites, timeliness of cases and responses, and the presence of experts to respond to questions, as well as effective linkages and trouble-free hardware. Future needs include better infrastructure and trained staff to coordinate the linkages and presentations. Telepathology has an important part to play in the provision of cost-effective medical care in Queensland.

Our understanding of the ecological role of larger elasmobranchs is limited by a lack of information on their spatial and seasonal abundance. Analysis of 14 years of gill-net catch data in south-eastern Queensland, Australia, revealed that the species composition of large sharks and other elasmobranchs significantly differed among beaches and seasons. Spinner sharks (Carcharhinus brevipinna) and hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna spp.) comprised nearly half the catch of all elasmobranchs. Although the distribution of these sharks overlapped, spatial variation existed in their abundance. Spinner sharks characterised the catch at Sunshine Coast beaches, whereas the catch at Gold Coast beaches was dominated by hammerhead sharks. Seasonal differences in elasmobranch community structure were also apparent, driven largely by a lower abundance of many species during the winter and the predominance of species such as spinner sharks and hammerheads in spring and summer. The present study provides the first quantitative data for numerous species of Carcharhiniformes in south-eastern Queensland and demonstrates that analysis of catch-rate data can improve our understanding of how larger sharks partition resources.

Introduction:With the move into Gold Coast University Hospital, a new disaster plan was developed in 2017. To assess preparedness for the Commonwealth Games (April 2018), a number of mass casualty exercises were conducted, including a large multi-agency exercise with Queensland Police and Ambulance Services. During this preparation phase, senior clinicians from the perioperative area clarified their sub-plans and developed a novel model of periop response.Aim:This study assesses this model of response and evaluates it within the context of periop disaster exercises. Methods:The periop response model evolved through multi-disciplinary key stakeholder engagement into a defined model of surgical, anesthetic, and periop nursing responses with dedicated roles and parallel communication streams from ED to OR by the respective specialties. Throughout different disaster exercises, this model of response was tested, refined, and evaluated by formal post-exercise debriefs and group meetings. Results:Since May 2017, seven different mass casualty exercises with periop response were performed; firstly, a table-top (EmergoTrainSystem) format was used, which revealed communication and logistical deficiencies. After model refinement, further exercises were accomplished, all within the clinical environment, including movements of mock patients from ED to OR. These exercises generated improvements in communication, coordination, and logistics. Every exercise was also used to test more detailed information, communication, and organizational tasks of the various involved craft groups, such as notification, call-in lists, whiteboard structure, transport facilitation, and many more. Overall, our newly developed periop response model proved to be robust and successful, even with rotating personnel through different roles.Discussion:Apart from the success of the periop response model, other hospital areas (ICU, bed and ward management) became involved. With growing interest and staff turn-over a regular periop disaster response exercise program has now been established. This model of periop response has potential for use in other health systems.

Australia is often described as having the fastest human population growth in the western world at 1.4 per cent per annum (ABS 1993). Queensland's growth rate in comparison is 2.52 per cent while the Gold Coast is currently experiencing 6.1 per cent which is equivalent to a population doubling time of 11 years. While such rapid growth is lauded in the media and discussed in glowing terms by economists, engineers and entrepreneurs, there are many others who in recent years have queried the wisdom of such rapidly increasing growth. In 1992 a group calling themselves The Union of Concerned Scientists, ‘comprising 1575 scientists from 69 countries, including a majority of Nobel laureates’ (Caswell 1) issued a ‘Warning to Humanity’ regarding the accelerating damage threatening humanity's global support systems. According to this group, ‘no more than one or a few decades remain before the chance to avert the threats we now confront will be lost and the prospects for humanity immeasurably diminished’. They refer specifically to over-consumption, poverty and spiralling populations: all of which we have in south-east Queensland.

Entanglement of marine mammals in fishing gear is recognised worldwide and is a continuous management concern. Gill-net entanglement data from the Queensland Shark Control Program (QSCP) on the Gold Coast, Australia, from 1990 to 2012 were analysed in the present study. Environmental drivers that may affect entanglements of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) were selected. M. novaeangliae entanglements coincided with their annual migration, with the greatest occurrences in September. D. delphis were mostly entangled from March to November, with the greatest occurrences in June. For both species, entanglements primarily occurred when the wave height was between 0.5 and 1.25m, the wave power was between 0 and 5kWm–1 and the wind speed was between 12 and 19kmh–1. M. novaeangliae entanglements were significantly more likely to occur in low rainfall (<6mmh–1), and D. delphis entanglements were more likely to occur during spring tides. There was a correlation between entanglements and the position of the East Australian Current’s (EAC) maximum velocity, with 73% of M. novaeangliae entanglements and 79% of D. delphis entanglements occurring when the EAC’s maximum velocity was west (shoreward) of its average position at 154°E. The present study provides the first set of possible management intervention targets associated with environmental conditions.

Seqwater is one of Australia's largest water businesses, with one of the most geographically spread and diverse asset bases. This includes 37 water treatment plants (WTPs), more than 600 km of bulk water supply pipeline, and the Gold Coast Desalination Plant (GCDP) constructed as part of the South East Queensland Millennium Drought response. The production of desalinated water has a greater unit-volumetric cost than the treatment of surface water due to high production energy costs. This paper presents the holistic approach adopted by Seqwater to find a solution for supply contingency while undertaking necessary upgrades and maintenance at the Mudgeeraba WTP. Through a process of network modelling, system risk mapping and financial analysis, it was demonstrated that operating the GCDP for 18 days would provide the best value solution due to the operating costs being offset by bulk supply network operational efficiency improvements.

This paper investigates how different approaches in evaluating property value uplift could lead to different results. The case study of the light rail transit system in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, is the context for this study. This paper addresses two of the critical aspects of the value uplift literature—how many of the results are determined by the method adopted and, perhaps more importantly, if there is a method which provides the best results. Historical data on private property sales are used to evaluate the timing, shape, and conditions for increases in land value or value uplift employing two of the most widely used modeling approaches: difference-in-differences and multilevel regression models. The more recent literature has also identified that the choice of control area is pertinent and so this study uses two different approaches for the selection of catchment areas: conventional distance-based methods and propensity score matching. The model results do confirm the increases in property prices because of better accessibility to Gold Coast light rail transit, but the amount of uplift does appear to depend both on the model approach and the method to select catchment and control areas. The paper discusses the implications of this for literature which has a variety of different methods established for research.

A sediment budget analysis model was applied to the Tweed River entrance, and was used to evaluate different coastal management scenarios. Construction of training walls at the Tweed River entrance resulted in the accretion prior to 1994 of an estimated 7 million m3 along Letitia Spit, New South Wales (to the south), and erosion of beaches at the Gold Coast, Queensland (to the north). The Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project (TRESBP) was established in 1994 and is responsible for bypassing sand from south to north, through dredging campaigns and a permanent bypass jetty. The Inlet Reservoir Model was developed by Kraus (2000) as a tool to analyse morphology changes at inlets. The inputs for the model were the estimated monthly longshore sediment transport rate, and the monthly pumping and dredging volumes from the TRESBP. Side-scan sonar surveys of the entrance bathymetry were used to validate the model over the period from 2000 to 2009. The validated model was used to examine bypass pumping strategies to manage the Letitia and Gold coast beaches, maintain navigability and minimise dredging costs. According to the model results, annual bypass pumping needs to be less than 325,000 m3 to manage the recovery of the Letitia Spit shoreline, and annual dredging of approximately 125,000 m3 is required to maintain full navigability in the Tweed River entrance.

Australia’s laid-back, sun-drenched beach lifestyle has been a celebrated and prominent part of its official popular culture for nigh on a century, and the images and motifs associated with this culture have become hallmarks of the country’s collective identity. Though these representations tend towards stereotype, for many Australians the idea of a summer holiday at the beach is one that is intensely personal and romanticised – its image is not at all urbanised. As Douglas Booth observed, for Australians the beach has become a ‘sanctuary at which to abandon cares – a place to let down one’s hair, remove one’s clothes […] a paradise where one could laze in peace, free from guilt, drifting between the hot sand and the warm sea, and seek romance’.1 Beach holidays became popular in the interwar years of the twentieth century, but the most intense burst of activity – both in touristic promotion and in the development of tourism infrastructure – accompanied the postwar economic boom, when family incomes were able to meet the cost of a car and, increasingly, a cheap block of land by the beach upon which a holiday home could be erected with thrift and haste. In subtropical southeast Queensland, the postwar beach holiday became the hallmark of the state’s burgeoning tourism industry; the state’s southeast coastline in particular benefiting from its warm climate and proximity to the capital, Brisbane. It was here – along the evocatively named Gold Coast (to Brisbane’s south) and Sunshine Coast (to its north) [1] – that many families experienced their first taste of what is now widely celebrated as the beach lifestyle [2]. As one reflection has it: In the era before motels and resorts, a holiday at the Gold and Sunshine coasts usually meant either pitching a tent and camping by the beach or staying in a simple cottage owned by family or friends […] Simplicity, informality, individuality […] were the hallmarks of these humble places.2

One of the most important sources of air pollution, especially in urban areas, is the exhaust emissions from passenger cars. New European emissions regulations, to minimize the gap between manufacturer-reported emissions and those emitted on the road, require new vehicles to undergo emission testing on public roads during the certification process. Outlined in the new regulation are specific boundary conditions to which the route on which the vehicle is driven must comply during a legal test. These boundary conditions, as they relate to the design and subsequent driving of a compliant route, are discussed in detail. The practicality of designing a compliant route is discussed in the context of developing a route on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, in a prescriptive manner. The route itself was driven 5 times and the results compared against regulation boundary conditions.

Since 2015 Logan City Council (LCC), a major urban area south of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, has hosted students from the Bachelor of Design (Architectural Studies) at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for an intensive two-day urban design charrette. The charrette is delivered as coursework and assessment for an architecture unit on urban morphology and urban dynamics; the format of this learning experience allows students to directly interact with Council personnel and to gain an in-depth understanding of the urban issues they are asked to solve. Over the years, LCC has offered engaging and challenging briefs to the students.
In 2015 the theme was the densification of Wembley Road, the main commercial spine of Logan Central currently characterized by the fragmented forms of big boxes and large carparks. In 2016 students were challenged with the design of a new masterplan for Logan Central Civic and Community Precinct s with the aim of creating a new civic and urban centre. In 2017 the focus was Springwood and the brief sought the creation of a new CBD alongside the M1, the main motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and southern states. In each instance, LCC has provided both the facilities where the workshop was hosted, and engaged several stakeholders to speak to the students. This mix of perspectives presented diverse issues and questions from the local area.

Accommodation is considered to be important by institutions interested in mental health care both in Australia andinternationally. Some authorities assert that no component of a community mental health system is more importantthan decent affordable housing. Unfortunately there has been little research in Australia into the consequences ofdischarging people with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia to different types of accommodation. This paper usesarchival data to investigate the outcomes for people with schizophrenia discharged to two types of accommodation. The types of accommodation chosen are the person's own home and for-profit boarding house. These two were chosenbecause the literature suggests that they are respectively the most and least desirable types of accommodation. Results suggest that people with schizophrenia who were discharged to boarding houses are significantly more likelyto be readmitted to the psychiatric unit of Gold Coast Hospital, although their length of stay in hospital is notsignificantly different.

As current society’s reflection on the rapid development of motorization and increasing emphasis on the ecological environment, the study of walkable cities has become one of the key points of urban sustainable design. Creating a walkable city is an effective way to build a low-carbon and healthy city. With the development of cities, walkability concepts and theories are constantly being given new life, and research methods and design strategies continue to be updated. A city’s walkability and walkability index have become current research hotspots. Based on prior research on walkability and related urban policies, this study selects Coomera Town on the Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, as the research area because of Coomera Town policy regulations and environmental requirements. This study utilizes traditional qualitative and quantitative research methods, machine mining technology, and the deep learning big data analysis technology to conduct thematic design research in a real place. Its combines walkability evaluation with walkability design to construct a walkable city in a targeted manner. This provides a reference for related city design in the future.

This is reflection on artistic inquiry as an expedition, construction and modification of a watercraft, where image-making occurs en route. The journey is from the Queensland Gold Coast to the fringes of the Simpson Desert, undertaken in May-June 2018. The place of boats in Australian inland exploration is considered. The author-artist situates performance/art-making as a post-structural practice. Research or inquiry is seen partly as a self-realization occurring after the process has already begun. The origins of the craft and the expedition are also described. From the images the artist imagines the search for Burke and Wills, the lost explorers, as it might be conducted by boat. Encounters with ‘Grey Nomads’ are considered. An inland sea is discovered, and the existence of the Peoples Republic of Wangkangurra imaginatively arises in the vacated fringes of the Simpson Desert. Key images of the emergent inquiry are provided and discussed. Discoveries and disruptions of settler fictions are made, concluding on the value of the approach in challenging cultural authorities.

Background: Abdominal and pelvic vascular injuries are amongst the most lethal injuries sustained by trauma patients. Unlike internationally, the epidemiology is not well documented in Australia. Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a level one trauma centre in Queensland, Australia. This study aims to identify the epidemiological patterns of abdominal and pelvic vascular traumatic injuries, their interventions and outcomes, and compare these with national and international data. Methods: All individuals who presented to GCUH between January 2014 and December 2019 with abdominal or pelvic vascular injuries were retrieved from the GCUH prospective trauma database. A descriptive analysis was undertaken on this cohort. Results: The study reviewed 5452 trauma admissions to GCUH, of which 68 patients sustained abdominal or pelvic vascular injuries. The number of blunt and penetrating trauma cases were 53 (77.9%) and 15 (22.1%) respectively, and 51 (75%) of the patients were male. Interventions were required in 57 patients (83.8%). Of these interventions, 28 were open (41.2%), 27 were endovascular (39.7%) and 2 required both open and endovascular interventions (2.9%). The most commonly injured vessels were the visceral arteries (51.9%) and iliac arteries (22.7%). The mortality rate was 8.8% which were all as a result of blunt trauma. Conclusions: Abdominal and pelvic vascular trauma causes significant injuries with a higher mortality than general trauma. Given the majority of cases occurred secondary to road accidents, motor vehicle safety interventions and prevention programmes are likely to have the greatest effect on reducing the abdominal and pelvic vascular injury rate in Australia.

Gender-based violence is a human rights and public health issue, disproportionately affecting women. The Motivating Action Through Empowerment (MATE) bystander program aims to address violence against women by shifting focus from perpetrators and victims of violence to community responsibility for not accepting attitudes and behaviors that support or allow the violence to occur. Traditionally bystander programs have been delivered through institutions, most notably college campuses in the United States. The translation of bystander programs to community settings is not widely reported. This research aimed to understand whether a violence prevention program could be effectively delivered in a faith community setting; specifically, it focuses on the implementation of MATE in a Christian church network in the Gold Coast region of Queensland, Australia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten church-based trainers in the MATE pilot program. Theoretically informed analysis using the COM-B behavior model identified that environmental factors had a large bearing on opportunities to deliver MATE workshops. This research identified six key lessons for MATE and other programs wishing to leverage faith communities: (1) Provide religious context; (2) Accommodate diversity; (3) Build faith leader capacity; (4) Employ social marketing; (5) Undertake co-design; (6) Actively administer, measure and monitor.

Using advanced deep learning (DL) algorithms for forecasting significant wave height of coastal sea waves over a relatively short period can generate important information on its impact and behaviour. This is vital for prior planning and decision making for events such as search and rescue and wave surges along the coastal environment. Short-term 24 h forecasting could provide adequate time for relevant groups to take precautionary action. This study uses features of ocean waves such as zero up crossing wave period (Tz), peak energy wave period (Tp), sea surface temperature (SST) and significant lags for significant wave height (Hs) forecasting. The dataset was collected from 2014 to 2019 at 30 min intervals along the coastal regions of major cities in Queensland, Australia. The novelty of this study is the development and application of a highly accurate hybrid Boruta random forest (BRF)–ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD)–bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) algorithm to predict significant wave height (Hs). The EEMD–BiLSTM model outperforms all other models with a higher Pearson’s correlation (R) value of 0.9961 (BiLSTM—0.991, EEMD-support vector regression (SVR)—0.9852, SVR—0.9801) and comparatively lower relative mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0214 (BiLSTM—0.0248, EEMD-SVR—0.043, SVR—0.0507) for Cairns and similarly a higher Pearson’s correlation (R) value of 0.9965 (BiLSTM—0.9903, EEMD–SVR—0.9953, SVR—0.9935) and comparatively lower RMSE of 0.0413 (BiLSTM—0.075, EEMD-SVR—0.0481, SVR—0.057) for Gold Coast.

ABSTRACTIn recent years, there has been an increasing focus on creating age-friendly cities to accommodate the changing needs of older people and to promote their overall health and wellbeing. This paper focuses on some of the urban planning implications related to maintaining the social health, as a main component of overall health and wellbeing, of older people. Specifically, we look at the role and accessibility of third places (popular public places where many people go to socialise) in relation to older people living in different neighbourhood built-form patterns, and how these factors impact on the formation of absent, weak and strong social ties. The data draw upon interviews with 54 older people living in different neighbourhood built-form patterns on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Our findings demonstrate the significant role third places have in affording older people opportunities to engage in the social lives of their local communities, thus contributing to their social health and overall wellbeing. This research supports previous studies relating to the accessibility of amenities by re-emphasising the importance of planning for the provision of third places that are conveniently located and easily accessible by older people. The paper concludes by arguing for the planning of transport and third-place interventions in Australia's sprawling suburban landscapes to allow older people more opportunities to be socially connected.

Abstract Objective: We aimed to identify trends in vascular access modalities for renal hemodialysis and to evaluate the influence of service modifications on service performance and patient outcomes. Methods: Retrospective analysis of incident and prevalent hemodialysis patients treated by the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, Queensland, Australia, between January 2004 and December 2013 was conducted. A comparison of patient demographic characteristics and analysis of trends in access modality and outcomes was performed for each group over the study period. Modifications to service structure and practice changes were also evaluated. Results: A total of 1787 patients (456 incident and 1331 prevalent) and 1671 procedures were examined. The proportion of patients starting hemodialysis on a catheter decreased from 79.2% to 63.6%. Patients starting hemodialysis on a fistula increased from 16.7% to a peak of 61.5% but fell to 27.3% in 2003. Catheter use in prevalent patients decreased from 11.7% to 6.1%, whilst fistula use increased from 60.6% to 88.5%. Graft access remained low for the incident group (0.0%–9.1%) and was reduced in prevalent patients from 27.7% to 4.9%. Bloodstream infection rates were reduced from 1.88 to 1.60 per 1000 dwelling-days. Endovascular and surgical revision of arteriovenous access was increased. Conclusions: Coordinated and multidisciplinary access service provided earlier referral for planned incident access with fewer catheters and increased fistulas with reduced bloodstream infection rates. Modifications to this vascular access service are associated with improved permanent access rates for incident and prevalent patients. There was an overall improvement of service performance and patient outcomes.
