The thesis is a short novel, Food of the Gods, followed by a critical afterward and bibliography.
In Food, four graduate students, all to varying degrees perverse, come together in a cabalistic union. Bored and desperate, they begin to transgress a series of taboos, eventually performing communal acts of aggression, murder, and even cannibalism. Frank West, one of the students, is the novel's narrator and questionable moral center. It is through his confession that the four's "monstrous deeds" are filtered through.
Thematically, Food examines the potential for evil in individuals, as well as the group dynamics which encourage such acts of violence to erupt.
The required critical afterward looks at cannibalism as a literary trope in Food and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, discussing how the athropophagous act can be read as a symbolic one, simultaneously creating and destroying boundaries between various dichotomies (such as eater/eaten or self/other) related to notions of identity.

Contrary to popular belief, discussions of morality, spiritual sensibilities, and religion are major themes in the lyrics of rap music. The current study provides an exploratory content analysis of rap lyrics in an effort to better understand the ways in which rap artists and audiences thought and think about their spirituality. Results indicate that there existed a fervent and nuanced discourse around spirituality and its various forms during the rise of rap music between the mid 1990s and early millennium.

This project highlights deeply embedded links between religion, economics, and power in colonial societies of the ‘West’, with a particular focus on Australia. Archival imagery and historical texts are examined to demonstrate the negative influences of particular monotheistic ideas and notions of supremacy. It is argued that these prevailing views have been adopted in the global propagation of Christian faith over many centuries. The imagery is paired with historical examples that demonstrate a conversion mentality that aimed to control any alternative practices of divine worship and associated culture. The legacy is then brought to bear on the contemporary treatment of Australian Aboriginal people. These themes of power and dominion—in particular, how religion and economic control served colonialism and empire building over time—have become the foundation for the primary outcomes expressed through the studio production. The creative outputs of my doctoral research include a major installation entitled Lesser Gods and associated exhibition projects, which will be discussed and analysed in this exegesis.

The notion of tapu in eighteenth century Polynesia was all-pervasive: a system of fluid boundaries and thresholds in the landscape pertaining to islands, bodies and objects. The thesis aims to isolate a body of Austral god images from within the London Missionary Society collection and think through this corpus in terms of its materiality - complex assemblages of whalebone and ivory, wood, feathers, hair, tapa and sinnet bindings. Approaching these god images as tapu vessels which trap potency and confer mana, an analysis oftheir assembly and use by ritual' experts or tahu 'a, allows us to explore the way in which they were specifically designed to breach thresholds during ritual procedure. The collection is also significant as amaterial index of the dramatic sociopolitical and cultural shifts which followed the establishment of the London Missionary Society in the region. Critical analysis of missionary sources within the archive allows us to recover aspects of the complex encounters between islanders and missionaries which were often fraught, tense and certainly volatile. Details ofthe acquisition of these god images by London missionaries in the first two decades ofthe nineteenth century allows us to reconfigure the parameters of a series of accepted assumptions about idolatry and iconoclasm in central Polynesia and contests the notion that the conversion of the Austral Islands in particular was a straightforward transition to Christianity. Having established a set ofhistorical and contemporary frameworks for understanding these objects, the thesis finally explores the series of distinct thresholds through which these objects have moved since they were collected and sent to England and thinks about how contemporary display can be used as a critical means of recovery. In this way objects, their histories and display become a means ofre-addressing the missionary encounter in all its rich complexity allowing us to re-assess its resonance for Polynesians and Europeans today.

This bachelor thesis have been performed at JIT Mech in Robertsfors. JIT Mech is one of a few companys in Sweden that is working with aluminum welding on thick materials. The background to this bachelor thesis is the problems caused when welding thick aluminum compared to welding on thin aluminum. The work positions is tearing on the workers and because of that JIT Mech is interested in mechanizing the production.   The purpose of the bachelor thesis is to look at different weldingproducts that on different levels would mechanize the welding production. The purpose of the preliminary study is to gain a basis for furthering the efficiency of the aluminum welding process to increase profitability, as well as improving the working environment for staff working in hot and uncomfortable situations. To solve the task, an observation study of production, as well as the interview of welders and supplier of the products have been made. A theory is written to review how aluminum welding works and explain what is problematic with it.   The comparison of the products is made with the greatest importance to how much the work environment can be improved depending on the level of mechanical welding equipment. A brief description of the products has been made, then a more detailed description of how much the products would change and improve welding production and remove static and weary workpositions for the welders compared with the current situation. Advantages and disadvantages have been developed for the welding products that gives a picture of how much they would improve the production. The conclusion was made that Fronius Flextrack 45 Welding Carriage is the best option for JIT Mech to invest in, as it improves the working environment while being the most affordable.   At the beginning of the work, it was planned to evaluate more products what was then impolemented, but after the project it was limited to only three products to simply keep the work within the timeframe. An important part of the welding process is to keep the weld hot throughout the welding to avoid tension and cracks in the material. It is not included in the evaluation as it is difficult to change that process. It became clear that there is no product at the moment that would completely automate the aluminum welding, but mechanizing the welding is still a big improvement. To get acquainted with this work taught me a lot about the thought process of development and investment to improve production, and hopefully my opinions can be a tool for future investment for JIT Mech.

A presente dissertação consiste em um estudo do romance Deuses americanos de Neil Gaiman levando em consideração suas conexões a outros textos bem como inserções de diversos textos provenientes de outros trabalhos na prosa do romance. A proposta de leitura do texto de Gaiman segundo este trabalho utiliza os conceitos de intertextualidade e arquétipos de forma a analisar a relação entre a trama de Deuses americanos às várias utilizações de textos cuja escrita “original” não é atribuída ao autor do livro inseridos (ou referenciados) na prosa do romance. Embora o objeto de estudo seja comumente visto como um livro difícil de ser categorizado dentre de um certo gênero, a proposta desta dissertação é demonstrar que o movimento e o fluxo contínuo de discursos (textos) e estilos na prosa do romance remonta a uma visão de um estrangeiro sobre os Estados Unidos e como o país foi criado: ou seja, que ele é não somente um ponto geográfico de confluência de muitos povos, mas também de muitas crenças e culturas que, de um modo ou outro, trouxeram os seus deuses consigo. A análise do uso de intertextos, intratextos e arquétipos no romance está estruturada em três capítulos centrais: o primeiro contextualiza os mitos que aparecem no romance e discute a questão de gênero literário do livro, além do conceito de América no texto de Gaiman. O segundo capítulo examina o uso de mitos por Gaiman em relação a outros trabalhos, tanto os manuscritos antigos de crenças pagãs quanto instâncias mais modernas de mito e alegoria, além de estudar as conexões entre Deuses americanos e outros textos escritos por Gaiman de acordo com o conceito de intratextualidade proposto por Affonso de Sant’Anna. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo se concentra no uso pontual de intertextos no romance, organizando-os entre alusões literárias, referências à cultura pop, além de estudar o conflito entre a era digital e o antigo reinado da fé religiosa, sem deixar de investigar o uso de arquétipos e apropriação na prosa do romance. O trabalho, assim, tem como objetivo verificar a alegação de que a qualidade intertextual do romance é essencial tendo em vista sua trama e cenário, bem como a afirmação de que ele redefine o conceito da América do final dos anos 90 como um espaço multicultural, dinâmico e mítico.
This thesis consists of a study of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods in the light of its connections to other texts as well as the punctual insertions of various texts from other works in the novel’s prose. The proposed reading of Gaiman’s text employs the concepts of intertextuality and archetypes in order to further analyze the relation of the plot of American Gods to the various uses of texts - that were not originally written by the book’s author – which are inserted (or alluded to) in the novel’s prose. Although the object of study is generally seen as a book that is hard to brand within a certain genre, this thesis’ approach to the novel demonstrates that movement and the continuous flow of speeches (texts) and styles in the novel’s prose comprises an outsider’s view of America and how the country came into existence – that is, that it is the geographical conflux not only of many peoples, but also of many beliefs and cultures, which in some way or other brought their gods with them. This examination of the use of intertexts, intratexts and archetypes in the novel is structured in three main chapters: The first chapter contextualizes the myths that appear in the novel and discusses the issues of genre and the concept of America in Gaiman’s text. The second chapter analyzes Gaiman’s use of myths in relation to other works – the original manuscripts of ancient beliefs as well as modern instances of myth and allegory – along with the connections between American Gods and Gaiman’s other works according to Affonso de Sant’Anna’s concept of intratextuality. Finally, the third chapter focuses on the punctual uses of intertexts in the novel, breaking them down into literary allusions, references to pop culture and the conflict between the digital era and the age of religious faith, and the use of archetypes and appropriation in the novel’s prose. At the end of the work, I aim to assert my belief that the intertextual nature of the novel is essential to its plot and setting, and re-defines the concept of late-90’s/early 2000’s America as a multicultural, dynamic mythical space.

Gods, Have Merced! chronicles the struggle of Jose Merced, a Santeria priest, with the city of Euless, Texas, where he has been residing for 17 years in an effort to overrule an ordinance that bans the most critical element of his faith: animal sacrifice. As the city officials justify the ban on the basis of public health, Merced thinks he is merely a victim of selective code enforcement aimed a restricting his freedom of religion. Local and national media covered the lawsuit he filed against the City of Euless, and Merced seems ready to take the fight over animal sacrifice to the United States Supreme Court. He wants American justice to give his African-originated religion recognized in a city where people seem uneasy about a practice that brings back the historic fears of Voodoo and its popularly assumed malefic practices. The film explores the complex structure of Santeria, its African roots, its renaissance in the Americas and the very controversial issue of animal sacrifice in the US.

This thesis argues that the iconography on Seleucid coins was created in order to appeal to the various ethnic groups within the empire and thereby reinforced the legitimacy of the dynasty. It first examines the iconography of Seleucus I and argues that as Seleucus became more secure in his rule he began to develop a new iconography that was a blend of Alexander’s and his own. This pattern changed under Antiochus I. He replaced the Zeus of Alexander and of Seleucus with Apollo-on-the-omphalos. At approximately the same time, a dynastic myth of descent from Apollo was created and promulgated. It is argued that in addition to the traditional view that Apollo was readily identifiable to the Greco-Macedonians within the empire he was also accessible to the Babylonians through the god Nabû and to the Persians as a Greek (or Macedonian) version of the reigning king. This ambiguity made Apollo an ideal figure to represent the multi-ethnic ruling house. This also explains the dynasty’s reluctance to deviate from the iconography established by Antiochus I. This thesis continues to explore the role of Apollo and other gods in creating an iconography which represented Seleucid power ending with the reign of Antiochus III. This thesis also incorporates the numismatic representations of the king as divine into the debate on ruler cult. This evidence suggests that the Seleucids may have had some form of ruler cult before the reign of Antiochus III.

This thesis is an exploration of the transformation of body and mind through Haitian dance from depth and liberation psychological perspectives. More personally, it focuses on the author’s transformational experience while being part of a Haitian dance community in Brooklyn, New York. Haitian dance is ingrained in Haitian culture, which embodies the history of Haitian people, mythology, gods, music, rituals, and ceremonies. This hermeneutic research examines Haitian dance as a way to access the somatic unconscious and support psychological healing and individuation. The research describes the somatic experience of archetypal energies, embodied consciousness, and myths through Haitian dance and how this enhances healing. In addition, this thesis explains how the author’s Haitian dance class provides healing for both individuals and a community from a liberation psychology perspective. Through dance, dialogue, and activism, participants gain deeper understandings of themselves and each other’s history and experiences.

Vivemos um momento histórico ímpar, no qual, apesar da aparente consolidação de um sistema de produção e seus eventuais reflexos na super-estrutura sócio-jurídica, os indivíduos não encontram certezas, apenas vagos referenciais. Os questionamentos em todas as áreas do saber humano se desdobram em miragens e, especialmente nas ciências sociais, a busca pelas respostas às indagações existenciais passa necessariamente pela interdisciplinaridade. Confiando ser esta tendência a melhor opção a ser tomada, objetivando analisar as organizações - sua estrutura, personagens, interação e conflitos - esta pesquisa recorreu a conceitos da Antropologia Cultural, Semiótica, Lingüística e Psicologia . A abordagem da cultura e estrutura organizacional foi parametrizada pelo papel da linguagem e do poder, sua interelação e conflito, dentro das organizações.
We are living a very peculiar historical moment, facing a would-be consolidation of na economic system and its impact on in the socio-legal institutions. In spite of this apparently solid environment, there is na absolute lack of certainties. Believing that all questionings concerning the human knowledge goes through interdisciplinary studies, this research appealed to some concepts of Cultural Anthropology, Linguistics, Semiotics, and Psychology in order to analyze some organizational aspects, such as strucuture, characters: their interaction and conflicts. The basic tools used to analyze the organizations´ cultural features were language and power.
Vivimos un momento histórico, en el cual, a pesar de la aparente consolidación de un sistema de producción y sus eventuales reflejos en la super-extructura socio-jurídica, los individuos no encuentran certezas, tan solo vagas referencias. Los cuestionamientos en todas las áreas del saber humano se desdoblan em visiones y, especialmente en las ciencias sociales, la búsqueda de respuestas a las indagaciones existenciales pasa necesariamente por la interdisciplinariedad. Confiando en que esta tendencia es la mejor opción a tomar al analizar las organizaciones - su extructura, personajes, interacción y conflictos - esta investigación recorrió a conceptos de la Antropología Cultural, Semiótica, Lingüística e Psicología . El abordaje de la cultura y extructura organizacional fue parametrizada por el papel del lenguaje y del poder, su interrelación y conflicto, dentro de las organizaciones.

I look to the common and mundane as sources for inspiration and imagination. In an attempt to evolve a veneer away from representing a coveted material, I have taken phenomenological events from my own personal experience and have searched for commonalities with them to create a new idea for veneering. My exploratory use of Google as a grammar-less machine deciphers the very nature of naming and its ambiguous attachment to an image. I am interested in the multiplicity of personal associations that become attached to images, and the subjectivity thus involved in the naming of an image.

Maintaining the pax deorum through worshipping the gods was essential for the survival and continuation of the Roman state. While many aspects of public, political, and social life were performed by elite men, religion offered the opportunity for all men and women, regardless of class and status to interact and contribute the welfare of their community. This thesis explores gender dynamics in three cults: the cult of Bacchus, the cult of the Magna Mater, and Paul's concept of Christianity in Corinth. While each cult is vastly different, they provide insight into the ways in which men and women could worship the gods together and the tensions and anxieties that arise in mix-gendered groups. In the case of the cult of Bacchus, gender was at the fulcrum of its suppression in 186 BCE, during which the Senate attempted to curb male participation in cultic worship but reaffirmed the authority of female participants. Moreover, the reaction to the presence of the galli, the eunuch priests of the Magna Mater, highlights Roman hostility towards non-gendered individuals, for whom there was not place in the binary gendered world of Rome. Finally, in Paul's in first letter to the Corinthians, the signifiers of gender, sexuality, and morality are at the forefront of his treatment of marriage, virginity, and veiling. In each case study, the issue of gender is the utmost importance and can even highlight the distribution of authority in cultic worship.

Over the past decade, the undercurrent of interest in the alt-right and white nationalism – the belief that white people need a unified culture and possible statehood – has grown into a movement worthy of serious academic and political interest. The progressive platform rallying against the history of colonialism, the privileges of men, and the supremacy of whites through identity politics has created new problems with its proposed solutions. White, working-class men feel dispossessed in a world where diversity can be defined by “fewer white men.” The working-class feels no privilege in their race or gender, but rather, frustration. What is privilege if not the comfort of wealth? Due to these political changes, whites, and working-class men in particular are searching for new forms of identity to be able to access influence through identity politics themselves while their grasp on demographic power wanes. White nationalism and Odinism – a modern iteration of Viking religion – progressively are becoming some of the few not-exclusively-Christian options for white male identity. While most do not openly advocate for racialized violence, they do not publicly denounce it either, encouraging traditionally masculine ideals of sexuality and warrior culture. This thesis seeks to provide a snapshot of how white, working-class men are involving themselves in identity-making in a multicultural world through ethnographic analyses of white nationalism and Odinism.

The point of departure for my research is a perceived breach and resulting dissonance between how digital games and other parts of society that are similar in form, enact certain aspects of life. This shift was made especially clear in massive multiplayer games in 2004 with the release of World of Warcraft, the design of which panders to cultural weak points, rather than attempting to mimic them. Digital games are far-reaching. In February 2019, ‘Apex Legends’ reached over 10 million players in less than 72 hours. Nonetheless, the idea of games as separate from the ‘real’ is persisting. Digital games have become a cyclopean gathering of liminality, and there are still no form-based ethics emerging, from either industry or society. Even though society is now undergoing the same abstracting digitisation, that has been a base for game design for a long time, there is a continuing separation in the knowledge applying to games or ‘reality’. The purpose of this thesis is to explore different ontological, epistemological, and ethical understandings of digital games as media, technology, modes of experience, and form. This is undertaken by using the situated and reality producing grating1 of technoscience, together with an eclectic range of concepts such as media as a message, agential reality, liminal phases, anticipation, and ergon. The research delineates a primer for applied studies within the rhizomatic structure of digital games, digitisation, technoscience, and media-technology. In accordance with this aim, the thesis has a fragmented, non-linear, and mosaic approach. This licentiate thesis is a compilation of three papers with a complementary introduction and an epilogue.

This thesis explores animal spirit shamanism (chuma xian) as it occurs in Liaoning, China. Aspects of this form of shamanism to be discussed and analysed include its origins, development, and practices; its relationships with Manchu shamanism and the Han Chinese cult of the fox; its medical implications and its involvement with Buddhism, Daoism, and other local cults. The history and characteristics of the chuma xian practice are closely tied to questions of power, and reflect Foucault's theory of power pluralism. This thesis argues that chuma xian practice is a particular product of local history and ethnography; it is also a means for expressing and exercising local religious beliefs of the people in Liaoning, especially within under-privileged groups (socio-economic status, etc.) within society.
Ce mémoire explore le shamanisme de l'esprit animal (chuma xian) tel qu'il existe en tant que phénomène dans la province de Liaoning dans la République Populaire de Chine. This study begins by recognising the religiously plural context in which the Christian churches currently exist. It discusses the various forces that impel the churches towards recognition of and dialogue with those of other faiths, as well as factors that hinder this process. It mentions a variety of ways in which theology - in particular, the theological understanding of the relationship between the Christian churches and other faith communities - is influenced by its context. In an attempt to identify a model within the Judaeo-Christian tradition that will provide a basis for inter-faith dialogue, the study proposes an exploration of the relationship between Yahweh and the gods of the nations as reflected in the the prophetic writings known as Deutero- and Trito-Isaiah, writings that almost certainly emerged from two particular periods in the history of the people of lsrael: the Babylonian exile and the early post-exilic period in Palestine. The study outlines historical developments within these two periods. It explores the various religious beliefs - Babylonian, Palestinian and Persian - that together formed the multi-faith context for Deutero- and Trito-Isaiah.

Vid transporter av farligt gods är informationen en avgörande faktor. Att rätt information vid rätt tidpunkt finns tillgänglig är väldigt viktigt vid händelse av olycka. Informationen utgör även en viktig faktor vid transportuppdrag som omfattas av flera olika transportslag i en dörr till dörr transport. Ett transportslag som i hög grad är beroende av andra transportslag för att utföra den här typen av transportuppdrag är sjöfarten. Sam-tidigt som internationella krav ställs på ökad säkerhet vid sjötransporter är Sjöfartsverket i hög grad intresserade av att effektivisera sjöfarts-näringen. Sjöfartsverket har avsikten att utveckla ett nationellt informationssystem för sjöfarten där bland annat informationsutbytet som rör farligt gods ska ske elektroniskt genom en sjöfartsportal. Med anledning av det har en kravspecifikation för en sjöfartsportal tagits fram.

Med tyngdpunkten på sjötransporter beskriver det här arbetet hur informationsflödet sker vid transporter av farligt gods där även väg- och järnvägstransporter ingår i transportkedjan. Genom intervjuer med involverade aktörer har det informationsflöde som genereras i samband med transporter av farligt gods kartlagts. Kartläggningen baseras på det informationsflöde som uppstår i samband med sjötransporter av farligt gods via Norrköpings hamn och har även resulterat i att ett antal problemområden identifierats.

Kartläggningen visar även att det ställs ett flertal olika krav på att rapportera och anmäla en transport av farligt gods. Kartläggningen har därefter legat till grund för att utvärdera vilken inverkan den framtagna kravspecifikationen för Sjöfartsportalen kan få på det kartlagda informationsflödet. Vid utvärderingen har även hänsyn tagits till de olika regelverk som transporter av farligt gods är förknippade med samt kravspecifikationens inverkan på de identifierade problemområdena.

Några av de viktigaste resultaten och slutsatserna är att det finns förutsättningar att komma tillrätta med vissa av de identifierade problemområdena vid en implementering av Sjöfartsportalen. Sjöfartsportalen kan framförallt innebära mindre dubbelrapportering, enhetlig information och mindre manuellt arbete för hamn och agent. Utvärderingen tyder emellertid på att det kan krävas vissa justeringar i kravspecifikationen, alternativt att implementeringen av Sjöfartsportalen sker i ett senare skede. En annan slutsats av utvärderingen är att säkerheten vid sjötransporter kan höjas genom att integrera olika anmälningar kring farligt gods.

Med kartläggningen och Sjöfartsportalen som bakgrund diskuteras avslutningsvis åtgärder för att öka integreringen mellan de olika transportslagen och det informationsflöde som uppstår vid transporter av farligt gods.

This essay studies the rhetorical situation of the crowdfunding site Patreon.com, with a particular focus on the construction of ethos. Taking off from the conception of ethos as a discursive dwelling place, the study analyzes five Patreon pages and the self-promotional practices associated with each page. It concludes that there are different ways of negotiating the implicit and explicit expectations that go along with setting up and maintaining a presence on a crowdfunding site – not least with regards to the relationship between ethos and ethics.

My novel, Demi-Gods, begins when nine-year-old Willa meets Patrick, eleven, in 1950. Patrick is visiting their Salt Spring Island beach house from San Diego. On the first morning, Willa follows him to the beach, where he coaxes her into a dilapidated rowboat. Their cruise ends when she is stung by a jellyfish and Patrick convinces her to urinate on herself. This transaction, in which Patrick asserts authority over her body and she complies, cinches a knot of power between them. As the years proceed, this bond thickens. It’s not until later that she realizes their relationship is essentially self-effacing. Willa has never felt exalted under anyone else’s gaze, and Patrick has never felt as powerful. The knot of power has altered them both. Rather than explore my creative practice thematically, I have found it more fruitful to unpack a concept central to the novel’s form and formation: rhythm. My thesis seeks to understand that centrality—how rhythm initiates and sustains my writing and fiction more broadly. Before Plato emphasized the link between rhuthmos (ρυθμός) and metron (μέτρον), rhythm signified a fluid or flowing form. The first chapter contrasts two traditional metaphors for rhythm, rheos vs. cadentibus guttis. By tracing the etymology of rhuthmos, I find these metaphors are not mutually exclusive. In the second chapter, I question the metaphors we use to identify “presence” in prose fiction. I draw upon Derrida’s deconstruction of the presence-absence hierarchy and pitch rhythm as an alternative metaphor to “voice.” The final chapter draws parallels between my study of rhythm and Henri Bergson’s theory of duration, with a focus on the grammatical verbal. Here, I apply the concepts I have been discussing to Virginia Woolf’s The Waves. In its entirety, my thesis contemplates the ways in which rhythm bridges the experience of the reader with the experience of the writer, and how rhythm calls to me personally.
