Edward Jenner, the discoverer of vaccination for smallpox, suggested in 1801 that the human race could now look forward to "the annihilation of the smallpox, the most dreadful scourge of the human species." In 1979 Jenner's vision became a reality when a global commission confirmed that the worldwide eradication campaign, begun in the 1960s, had succeeded. This was surely one of the most notable human achievements in all of history. Yet, the world cannot rest easy. Stores of the deadly virus still reside in American and Russian laboratory freezers, and no one can be totally sure that there are no other secret repositories or that bioterrorists have not gotten their hands on the ultimate biological weapon.

The consolidated public concerts during the nineteenth century remained the same size, which led to the crystallization of the performer-audience relationship to the present. With the autonomy gained by the composer, its function is separated from the figures performer and the listener, which established a new configuration under the musical season. However, despite the legacy of nineteenth-century tradition in the twentieth century, the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould pointed out new aspects in the unfolding of this relationship. His intense relationship with the studio recording, radio and television, has proposed a different positioning in respect to the figure of the interpreter in relation to his own art and the public. This research is focused on addressing these new designs proposed by Gould, in order to rethink the artistic practice of contemporary pianist. The work is divided into three parts. Chapter 1 is a plot of the historical tradition of concerts, from the end of the eighteenth century to its emergence during the nineteenth century. It also parallels Gould with public concerts and his preference for media (recording studio, radio and television). In chapter 2, is presented in depth about the prospect of Gould presentations in public and also the relationship of the spectator with his interpreter. The last chapter is reflecting about the interpretive process of Gould as an aid to a rethinking of the interpreter today.
Os concertos públicos consolidados durante o século XIX permaneceram com o mesmo formato, o que suscitou a cristalização da relação intérprete-público até a atualidade. Com a autonomia adquirida pelo compositor, sua função se separou das figuras do intérprete e do público, o que estabeleceu uma nova configuração no âmbito musical da época. Contudo, apesar da herança da tradição oitocentista, no século XX, o pianista canadense Glenn Gould apontou novos aspectos no desdobramento dessa relação. Seu vínculo intenso com o estúdio de gravação, o rádio e a televisão, propôs um posicionamento diferente em respeito à figura do intérprete na relação com sua própria arte e com o público. A presente pesquisa tem como foco a abordagem destes novos delineamentos propostos por Gould, com o intuito de repensar a prática artística do pianista contemporâneo. O trabalho está dividido em três partes. No capítulo 1 é um traçado histórico da tradição dos concertos, a contar do final do século XVIII até sua eclosão durante o século XIX. Também é feito um paralelo de Gould com os concertos públicos e sua preferência pelas mídias (estúdio de gravação, rádio e televisão). No capítulo 2, é apresentada de forma aprofundada a perspectiva de Gould acerca das apresentações em público e também da relação do intérprete com seu espectador. O último capítulo reflete acerca do processo interpretativo de Gould, como auxílio para um repensar da prática do intérprete na atualidade.

Solo percussionist and composer Glenn Kotche has achieved international fame with his experimental percussion-based music, collaborating with and composing for renowned contemporary music ensembles such as the Kronos Quartet, Band on a Can All-Stars, So Percussion, and Eighth Blackbird. One of his most celebrated compositions in recent years is Monkey Chant, which combines acoustic and electronic elements in a solo multiple percussion setting. Written and premiered in 2006, Kotche was inspired to compose Monkey Chant after listening to original field recordings in Bali from the Nonesuch Explorer Series. Found in these recordings is the popular Balinese music and dance drama known as Kecak. Monkey Chant showcases, through percussion, the intricate vocal patterns and recounting of the Ramayana Epic featured in Balinese Kecak. This monograph serves as an informational performance guide for Monkey Chant that simplifies and resolves performance questions and issues. It provides a contextual setting for the work with a brief biography of Glenn Kotche, including his musical influences and inspiration for the composition. Balinese Kecak is examined as well as the Hindu Ramayana tale as it relates to Kotche’s composition, revealing the function for its compositional form. This document also clarifies and details preparatory procedures for collecting and building the unique instruments required, also detailing schematics for electronic audio equipment and setup. Lastly, there is an analysis of compositional style and form, offering optional solutions to performance obstacles.

This dissertation centers on virtuosity as a source of creative genesis, boundary-pushing, and musical debate. Focusing on the careers and works of pianists Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) and Glenn Gould (1932-1982), I examine the role of the virtuoso in twentieth-century music-making, and his encounter with Canadian national identity. Gould and Peterson were contemporaries, and despite their differences - Gould was a white classical musician from Toronto, and Peterson, an African Canadian jazz artist from Montréal - their career paths share points of connection. Using archival material from the Glenn Gould fonds and the Oscar Peterson fonds at Library and Archives Canada, I analyze the work of both figures as sources of musical creativity through musical performance and composition. The first part of this dissertation demonstrates how Gould's and Peterson's respective performances sparked furor through their contestation of musical boundaries. In the first chapter, my analysis of outtakes from Gould's 1955 recording session of the Goldberg Variations illuminates how his radical musical philosophies emerged from his early recording practices. In chapter two, I examine critiques of Peterson's performance aesthetic from an extensive collection of reviews, and argue that his style of virtuosic jazz allowed him to push back against musical expectations. In the third chapter, I examine the work of Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren whose experimental animation provided opportunities for partnerships with both musicians; with Peterson in 1949 and with Gould in 1969. The second part of my dissertation takes the reader outside the realm of performance and demonstrates how Gould and Peterson engaged with landscape through sound composition. The fourth chapter investigates the spatial and sonic interpretation of Canadian locales in Gould's Solitude Trilogy, a series of three experimental radio documentaries. In the final chapter, I unravel the biographical and musical influences in Peterson's multi-movement suite for jazz trio, Canadiana Suite. By studying these iconic virtuosos side-by-side, my dissertation illuminates the significance of the performer in Canada's cultural life in the second half of the twentieth-century and yields a new understanding of how Gould and Peterson exploded expectations in their respective musical communities.

This thesis considers how the Twentieth Century 'death of painting' debate brought about a series of challenges and changes to painting that have ironically ensured its survival. This is illustrated in the practice of artists Gerhard Richter and Glenn Brown, whose investigations into painting's failures and limitations have paradoxically resulted in their works demonstrating the continued relevance and success of the medium. Specifically, this discussion analyses Richter's Annunciation After Titian (1973) series and Brown's series of works that appropriate Frank Auerbach paintings (1998 - 2000). These works illustrate the ways in which painting has developed in the last half of the Twentieth Century as a result of the 'death of painting' debate. The primary developments identified are that painting now draws from and references many other media; painting now embraces photography (instead of seeing it as a threat); the use of appropriation in painting is now seen as expansive rather than as representing depletion; there has been a return to romanticism and pleasure in painting; and women are now included in the broader discussion of painting. In considering the 'death of painting' debate, as well as the changes painting has experienced as a result of it, the primary point of departure is Yve-Alain Bois' pivotal essay 'Painting: The Task of Mourning' (1986) and his analysis of Hubert Damisch's 'theory of games'. The evolution of the 'death of painting' debate is also outlined via the writings of Douglas Crimp, Arthur C. Danto, Douglas Fogle, Michael Fried, Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. This thesis also considers how the debate has impacted contemporary painters' practices, as well as how my own practice owes a debt not only to the response of artists like Brown and Richter, but also to the debate itself.

Abstract The nonlinear nonplanar response of cantilever inextensional metallic beams to a principal parametric excitation of two of its “exural modes, one in each plane, is investigated. The lowest torsional frequencies of the beams considered are much larger than the frequencies of the excited modes so that the torsional inertia can be neglected. Using this condition as well as the inextensionality condition, we develop a Lagrangian whose variation leads to the two integro-partial-differential equations of Crespo da Silva and Glynn. The method of time-averaged Lagrangian is used to derive four first-order nonlinear ordinary-differential equations governing the modulation of the amplitudes and phases of the two interacting modes. The modulation equations exhibit the symmetry property found by Feng and Leal by analytically manipulating the interaction coefficients in the modulation equations obtained by Nayfeh and Pai by applying the method of multiple scales to the governing integro-partial-differential equations. A pseudo arclength scheme is used to trace the branches of the equilibrium solutions and an investigation of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix is used to assess their stability. The equilibrium solutions experience pitchfork, saddle-node, and Hopf bifurcations. A detailed bifurcation of the dynamic solutions of the modulation equations is presented. Five branches of dynamic (periodic and chaotic) solutions were found. Two of these branches emerge from two Hopf bifurcations and the other three are isolated. The limit cycles undergo symmetry-breaking, cyclic-fold, and period-doubling bifurcations, whereas the chaotic attractors undergo attractor-merging and boundary crises.

Abstract The response of a slender, elastic, cantilevered beam to a simple harmonic excitation is investigated. The nonlinear equations governing the motion of the beam are essentially those derived earlier by Crespo da Silva and Glynn (1978). In the current study, the governing equations are extended to include static deflection. These equations not only include nonlinear curvature, nonlinear inertia, inextensionality and static deflection, but also include torsional displacement. In all cases, the torsional displacement is written in terms of lateral displacements and eliminated from the governing equations. Previous derivations of equations of motion contain only the linear and cubic terms without consideration of the static displacement produced by the weight of the beam. As a result of this static deflection, there are quadratic terms in the governing equations, which introduce the possibility of superharmonic and subharmonic resonances of order two. The partial-differential equations of motion are converted into a system of coupled ordinary-differential equations in time by the application of Galerkin’s procedure. Approximate solutions of the temporal equations are determined by the method of multiple scales. The analysis reveals that only the in-plane modes directly excited by a primary or secondary resonance and the out-of-plane modes excited by an internal resonance are involved in the first approximation of the response. The amplitudes of the other modes decay. Under some circumstances, there is no steady-state (constant amplitude, constant phase) response. Instead, the amplitude and phase are slowly modulated. Under some circumstances, the modulations are harmonic and produce discrete side bands around the fundamental frequency. For other circumstances, the modulations are chaotic. Both stable and unstable whirling motions are found in every resonance when the principal moments of inertia of the cross-section are approximately equal. The longer the beam is, the more prominent the whirling motion becomes. The accuracy of some of the approximate solutions is verified by numerical integration. The analysis reveals some interesting possibilities: For example, in a subharmonic resonance of order two, it is possible for the out of plane motion to have a frequency that is exactly one half that of the in-plane motion, which has a frequency equal to that of the excitation. It is also possible for the frequency of the in-plane motion to be equal to that of the out-of-plane motion, which is the one half frequency of the excitation.

Abstract A slender, elastic, inextensible, cantilevered beam is considered. The principal moments of inertia of the beam cross section are equal (e.g., the cross section may be circular or square). The beam is subjected to a uniformly distributed vertical force which has a static component (e.g., just the weight of the beam) and a dynamic component with constant amplitude and varying frequency Ω(t). Planar and nonplanar motions are analyzed. The governing equations of motion are an extension of those derived by Crespo da Silva and Glynn [1,2], taking into account the static deflection. Nonlinear curvature, nonlinear inertia, torsional displacements, and viscous damping are included in the formulation. A perturbation method is applied, and quadratic and cubic terms are retained in the equations. Torsional inertia is neglected, and with the use of the inextensibility condition, the longitudinal motion is written in terms of the horizontal and vertical motions, which are then represented in terms of three vibration modes in the application of Galerkin’s method. In some cases, the time histories of the modal amplitudes are determined by numerical integration; in others, the method of multiple scales is used to obtain approximate solutions for the response. When the forcing frequency Ω is fixed, the system exhibits primary resonance when Ω is close to a natural frequency of the beam, subharmonic resonance when Ω is close to twice or three times a natural frequency, and superharmonic resonance when Ω is close to one-half or one-third of a natural frequency. Under these resonance conditions, the planar (vertical) steady-state motion of the beam may be unstable and a non-planar (whirling) motion may occur. These stationary conditions have been examined previously [3]. Here, nonstationary conditions are studied, in which the forcing frequency Ω(t) either increases or decreases slowly through a resonance. The time histories of the vertical and horizontal motions are determined. For the various resonances, the magnitude and form of the response depends on many factors, including the rate of change of Ω(t), the static component of the force, the amplitude of the dynamic component of the force, the amount of damping, and the initial conditions (at the beginning of the acceleration or deceleration). Attention is focused on cases that lead to nonplanar motions, and some interesting types of dynamic behavior are exhibited by the beam.

Abstract Cyanosis or “Blue Baby Syndrome,” is an infant disorder which affects the newly born babies whose skins turn blue or purple because of lack of required blood flow between heart and lung due to pulmonary vascular blockage. Many patients may also have stenosis in vessels. If there is not enough blood flow from heart to the lung, lack of oxygen will cause platelet aggregation and coagulation resulting in elevated wall shear stress which may potentially result in death. In order to address the congenital defect and increase blood flow and oxygen saturation levels within the blood pumping system, a biological shunt is usually planted between innominate veins and left and right pulmonary arteries. The well-known examples are Blalock-Taussig shunt (BT shunt) between right ventricle and pulmonary artery and bidirectional Glenn shunt (BGS) between innominate veins and pulmonary arteries. The goal of this paper is to study the hemodynamics of BGS, wherein the blood flow goes through superior vena cava (SVC), innominate and subclavian veins and pulmonary arteries. In another simulation, Blalok-Taussing shunt (BTS) is also included along with the BGS. In BTS, the blood directly flows between innominate and pulmonary artery. The models are created with SolidWorks and Blender software based on real patient aorta model parameters. The commercial CFD software ANSYS is used to simulate the blood flow. CFD simulations are performed for blood flow (1) in patient specific aorta model without BGS and (2) in patient specific model with both BGS and BTS. The results for distribution of pressure, velocity and wall shear stress are obtained and analyzed to evaluate the performance of BGS alone and with both BGS and BTS. The computations are compared with limited available clinical data. This study demonstrates how CFD can be effectively utilized in the design of medical devices such as BGS and BTS and to improve the clinical outcomes in patients.

Academic publishing processes are shaped by the ways in which scholars within the field review and evaluate the work of their peers. In an ideal world, these methods would simply promote the publication of the best forms of research without prejudice or subjectivity. In reality, issues such as Knobloch-Westerwick, Glynn, and Huge’s Matilda effect, Merton’s Matthew effect, Blank’s institution bias, and Robert’s and Verhoef’s gender bias shape the ways that scholarly inquiry are evaluated. Knowing that the peer review process can introduce issues of bias, what then of other aspects of the publishing cycle? For example, what of the subvention funding provided by some institutions to support their faculty in pursuing dissemination of research in Open Access (OA) journals? This Open Educational Resource (OER) will present an overview of the OA landscape and provide learners with tools to develop their own inquiries into the inequities present within the OA publishing industry. All assignments include suggested grading rubrics and build upon one another in a cumulative manner.

Accompanying the GIS For Conservation website is a peer-reviewed research report. The report details the case study and research methods that have informed the eMedia publication, focusing on the development of maps predicting the suitability of the Fiji Islands for longhorned beetles (Cerambycidae) that include endemic and endangered species such as the Giant Fijian Beetle Xixuthrus heros.

Polyamide 6 (PA6) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic used in many engineering applications due to good strength, stiffness, mechanical damping, wear/abrasion resistance, and excellent performance-to-cost ratio. In this report, two structure-property relationships were explored. First, carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene (G) were used as reinforcement molecules in simulated and experimentally prepared PA6 matrices to improve the overall mechanical properties. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with INTERFACE and reactive INTERFACE force fields (IFF and IFF-R) were used to predict bulk and Young's moduli of amorphous PA6-CNT/G nanocomposites as a function of CNT/G loading. The predicted values of Young's modulus agree moderately well with the experimental values. Second, the effect of crystallinity and crystal form (α/γ) on mechanical properties of semi-crystalline PA6 was investigated via a multiscale simulation approach. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Glenn Research Center's micromechanics software was used to facilitate the multiscale modeling. The inputs to the multiscale model were the elastic moduli of amorphous PA6 as predicted via MD and calculated stiffness matrices from the literature of the PA6 α and γ crystal forms. The predicted Young's and shear moduli compared well with experiment.
