Streszczenie:
The thesis is a comparative study of George Eliot and George Sand. Numerous references to Sand in Eliot's correspondence, as well as in Lewes's criticism, show that the link between the two female authors was more profound than suspected. Lewes and Sand met and corresponded for a few years and his art theory is greatly indebted to Sand's novels. Sand also exerted a profound influence on Eliot's intellectual and artistic development before Eliot met Lewes. Sand was her "divinity." However, it is Lewes who encouraged Eliot to follow in Sand's footsteps. The thesis is thematic and compares first the impact of Sand's religious novels such as Spiridion and Lélia. Then their social thought is examined, with novels such as Le pêche de Monsieur Antoine and Felix Holt, the Radical. The third part deals with their conception of art, with special attention to the doctrine of Realism and to Sand's rustic novels. Their conception of women is also examined as well as their position on the question of woman's liberation. Finally, I compare their views of the complex relationship between femaleness and literature, in the light of recent feminist criticism.

Hunt, William Norman. "Destination marketing: George". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5604.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
A destination is often given its identity by its brand name, creating an image thereof in the customers’ minds which means that destinations exist not only physically but also mentally in the minds of people. Destination marketers play a role in the creation of the images of such destinations which is dependent on what the destination offers in its depth and breadth. Destination Marketing Organisations (DMOs) should be able to not only understand their destination’s offerings but also who they are targeting and how they should market the destination. DMOs have evolved to become more than mere destination information providers as considerable destination information is now created by fellow travellers which are shared via social networks. The most important change resulting from adopting the concept of social capital in the context of tourism would be that tourism scholars and DMOs become aware of the importance of resources obtained through an individual’s social interactions. Despite the fact that the town of George has a number of attributes it is able to market to potential visitors, it does however not automatically make it a desired destination. The main objective of this treatise is to determine what would give George its marketable destination identity which will be achieved by gaining an understanding of the local residents’ viewpoints of George and to measure them according to specific attributes which are carefully formulated in a survey questionnaire. This treatise aims to determine what George can do to create a destination identity and how such an identity can be applied in the successful marketing of George as a destination town. It is an exploratory quantitative study consisting of literature and case study components used to test proposed hypotheses. It aims to provide guidance to the destination marketers by way of researched literature on the topic of destination marketing as well as offer empirical data gathered from responses to a survey conducted with local residents of George which is focused on creating a destination identity through its business, cultural and sporting events. Based on the statistical analysis of the survey results it will be shown that a relationship exists between Destination Marketing and Events, Branding and Media, which plays a pivotal role in the successful marketing of such events and thereby the brand image of the destination. Based on the literature findings and the empirical data gained for this treatise it was shown that events can be used to create a new brand image for a town like George which already possesses a natural beauty and friendly people. Examples will be discussed where destinations throughout the world have managed to change their brand without changing their environment, from which they have gained a new destination brand. George can strategically convert what it already has to become the destination of choice in terms of intra-town activities and events which could not only enhance its own economy but also that of the surrounding towns. The geographic location of George and that of the Surrounding tourist attractive towns make it possible to design and implement intra-town events with relative ease. As found in researched literature, the residents should be made part of any destination marketing campaign. These events should be designed to incorporate the surrounding towns to capitalise on the concept of intra-town events where George becomes the main centre but uses outlying towns to lure tourist. Respondents to the survey indicate that they somewhat agree that George has sufficient infrastructure to host sports (μ = 3.77), cultural (μ = 3.61) and business events (μ = 3.88) and that hosting such events in George would create job opportunities. The responses for all three event types in this regard have a mean value above μ = 4. Respondents indicated that religious events are deemed the most important (mean value μ = 4.25) while also indicating that they agreed with a mean value of μ = 4.18 that entrance fees influence their decision to attend events. The empirical research conducted in George was designed to gain a representative viewpoint of its residents in terms of what they deem the identity of George to be, the main objective (ROM) of which was to determine what would give George its destination identity. The composite image of the residents of George was measured according to specific attributes which were carefully formulated in the survey.

Streszczenie:
The critical tradition in International Relations Theory has placed great emphasis on the metaphysical nature of sovereignty, the concept assumed to be pivotal to the modern states system. The present study offers an explanation for the metaphysics that characterizes the prevailing notion of sovereignty via insights provided by Bataille. The study focuses on the ontological implications to which Bataille&rsquo
s formulation of sovereignty gives rise. Underlying this endeavor is to probe into the ways in which these implications enrich our understanding of sovereignty. One of the most important achievements of Bataille&rsquo
s approach to sovereignty is that it does not treat sovereignty as merely an administrative and legal issue. This achievement is highly critical in the sense that it enables us to realize the metaphysical dimension of sovereignty. This metaphysics has an important potential to render the problematic points in sovereignty visible. Through the analysis of these points, this study elaborates on the historical development of political authority and state sovereignty. Taking the anthropological data provided by Bataille into account the study claims that with the emergence of modernity, there came into existence a new metaphysical representation of sovereignty.

Ambroselli, Maximilien. "George Desvallières, Georges Rouault, Léon Bloy : vers un art "néo-chrétien" ? (1901-1914)". Thesis, Paris 1, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA01H027.

Arising as direct fruits of keen nightlife observation, the new paintings George Desvallières and Georges Rouault exhibit at the Salon d'Automne from 1903 are gradually pervaded by an implicit Christianity, translating a deep sense of pity felt on prostitutes and showmen. The emergence of this new type of production, which is quickly associated with the figure of suffering Christ, seems to be encouraged by the strong personality of the writer Léon Bloy, met by the two painters in April 1904. By privileging the emotional impact, Desvallières and Rouault set up a new iconography with singular and resolutely expressive plastic that seems to be part of a social approach to denounce the masked monstrosities of the world, and which participates in the questioning of the Sulpician art at the beginning of the century. The term "neo-Christian" is used by Desvallières to describe all "intellectuals, poets, scholar and artists" longing for a renewal of religious art. Since the failure of Joris-Karl Huysmans' attempt at Ligugé in 1901, to which Rouault has joined, it seems that Desvallières has become the main actor of this renewal, both in his painting and writings. In addition to a renewed Christian art, more modern and constructive, he is advocating for the creation of a new school of religious art placed under the protection of Notre-Dame de Paris. Despite the fact this project would not succeed right away, it arouses the interest of Maurice Denis and is undoubtedly at the origin of the creation of Workshops of Sacred Art in 1919

Our objectif in this thesis is to analyse the «romantic» development of George Orwell. For the base of the study we have chosen both realist novels and «political satire». The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part will discuss the ideological and socio-historical period in which Orwell lived, his intellectual development, the political-litterary climate of the time giving more details to the life of the author and his works. The second part will concentrate on the actual text of the realist novels of Orwell. We then proceeded with a more thematic reading, the critical way with which the author views the world around him, developping themes such as marginalisation and alienation, rebellion against established order, the search to belong, his fight against totalitarianism. The third part is a political and literary analysis of Animal Farm et Nineteen Eighty-Four

This thesis analysis George Orwell&rsquo
s three novels
Burmese Days, Keep the Aspidistra Flying and Nineteen Eighty-Four in terms of the main political ideas expressed through these works. It begins with an overview of Orwell as a political writer and the political atmosphere of the era. The thesis then asserts that the novels are used as a form of propaganda by the writer. The central political ideas that appear in the novels are imperialism in Burmese Days, capitalism in Keep the Aspidistra Flying and totalitarianism in Nineteen Eighty-Four. This dissertation is therefore primarily organized around these topics, and Orwell&rsquo
s use of his novels as a way of conveying his political message will be illustrated and exemplified in the study.

Reynolds, Glen David. "Was George Fox a gnostic?" Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2004. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.399190.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The critique of Quakerism made by John Owen (Puritan Vice-chancellor of Oxford University) in tracts published in 1655 and 1679 was that Quaker theology renewed aspects of Gnosticism, a theology interpreted by patristic commentators as a Christian heresy. Owen's comparison was confined to the Quaker concepts of Light and spiritual perfection (which Owen viewed as being similar to the nature and function of Gnostic revelatory knowledge). This thesis argues that Fox's theological message (and in particular his interpretation of the concept of revelatory Light) incorporated a remarkably similar soteriology and realised eschatology to that found in Valentinian Christian Gnosticism. Gnosis is defined (Chapter 1) as an individual's realisation, arising from revelatory knowledge and spiritual baptism (received in a Christian context from the redeemer figure of Christ) that a divine ontological component exists within the human body which needs to reunite with a consubstantial eternal heavenly Light/Christ. The soteriological and eschatological implications arising from Valentinian Gnostic revelation are therefore: supernatural reunion of the divine element in the individual with Christ (chapter 2) awakening the individual to their divinity, resulting in spiritual perfection and freedom from the power and temptation of sin on earth (chapter 3); 2. the consequential devaluation of calendrical time/events (as significant aspects of theological exegesis) in pursuance of an anti-cosmic/historical emphasis upon inward revelation, thus limiting the authority of a) Scripture and b) communion and baptism to the extent that they are historically particular outward rituals (chapter 4). Fox claimed to restore primitive Christianity, yet unconsciously renewed aspects of Valentinian Christian Gnosticism. His quest for divine union, perfection and a realised eschatology is readily transferable to the early Church context of Valentinian Gnosticism in which (in opposition to the authority of the developing orthodoxy) reunion with God is a realisable eschatological aim on earth. The concept of union with God is a "keystone" of Foxian theology and incorporates the use of "Light" in an eschatologically motivated metaphysical dynamic. Previous scholarship has generally emphasised "Light" and "union" in Fox's theology as merely ethically motivated concepts. The conclusions of this thesis place Fox's quest for divine union and perfection in a Valentinian context, as opposed to the purely apocalyptic framework identified in current research. The thesis detects similarities between the demise of Valentinian Gnosticism and the abandonment of a distinctive Valentinian theology in Fox's message. There is no evidence that Fox used or was influenced by Gnostic mythological texts, save for an isolated reference Fox makes to concepts found in Gnostic-Hermeticism. This fact, together with a difference in scriptural/sacramental exegesis between Fox and Valentinian Gnosticism and the Valentinian reservation of a postmortem element to eschatological completion, results in the thesis concluding that Foxian theology is not Gnostic per se but is nevertheless remarkably similar to Valentinian Gnosticism.

Streszczenie:
This study is an intellectual biography of Sir George Adam Smith, biblical scholar and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen. Smith trained for the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland under A.B. Davidson, who was influential in disseminating Higher Critical views of the Bible in Scotland. Smith inherited his teacher's penchant for Hebrew and Old Testament criticisms, and served as Hebrew tutor in Aberdeen's Free Church College following the deposition of William Robertson Smith, before becoming the first minister of Queen's Cross Free Church, Aberdeen (1882-92). During his ministry in Aberdeen Smith established a reputation as a preacher of note, and a leading biblical scholar. His preaching drew a large congregation around him, and his Old Testament commentaries secured him a place of note among students of the Old Testament prophets. The tensions between the developing biblical scholarship of the period and the confessional commitment of the Victorian Free Church of Scotland are evident in his years of ministry; and this thesis examines the relationship between the Church's theological position and the scholarship of the rising intellectuals. In 1892 Smith was appointed to the Chair of Hebrew and Old Testament Exegesis at the Free Church College, Glasgow, where he served until 1910. Smith's scholarly work focused on further critical studies of the prophets and the Historical Geography of Palestine. The tensions between academic study of the biblical text and the Church's confessional position came to a head with a near trial for heresy in 1902, the significance of which is examined here. Smith also embraced a social Gospel, and the relationship between his critical study of the Old Testament and his social work in the cities is worthy of study. Some historians view the emergence of a social gospel as evidence of a disappearing orthodox; but for Smith the social work of the church was integral to the ongoing ministry of the Church. Smith served as Principal of Aberdeen University from 1910 to 1935. His position as Vice Chancellor was akin to pastoring a large congregation without credal commitment. The growth of the University during his Principalship is interesting in its own right; not less so are his work as Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland (1916) and his work in church and state during the First World War.

Streszczenie:
This thesis approaches the ways George MacDonald viewed and represented Victorian society in his novels by analysing select social issues which he felt compelled to address. Chapter One introduces the thesis. It contains a review of critical commentary on MacDonald’s work, as well as discussions on his non-fictional texts and essays, industrialism, and the great rural-urban divide of the nineteenth century. Chapter Two concentrates on MacDonald’s representations of the city in Robert Falconer (1868), The Vicar’s Daughter (1872), and Weighed and Wanting (1882) by underscoring parallels between Octavia Hill’s housing and environmental schemes and situations which he experienced firsthand. Chapter Three examines the influence of Nature on MacDonald’s theology and social views. Special emphasis is placed on Wordsworth and the development of MacDonald’s unique pantheism in his texts, such as the short story, ‘A Journey Rejourneyed’ (1865-6), Guild Court (1868), Wilfrid Cumbermede (1872), What’s Mine’s Mine (1886), and Home Again (1887). Chapter Four uncovers MacDonald’s involvement with the animal welfare movement during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Discussions on vivisection, vegetarianism, hunting, animal abuse, evolution, and degeneration are provided with a wide range of MacDonald’s texts, such as Alec Forbes of Howglen (1865), Paul Faber, Surgeon (1879), The Marquis of Lossie (1877), A Rough Shaking (1890), and Heather and Snow (1893). Chapter Five offers a short summation of the thesis. It affirms that MacDonald was deeply troubled by certain social issues that were raised within his society and would use his fiction to express his concerns. The conclusion also offers a few suggestive topics for ongoing research in the field of this thesis.

Ball, Derek Gordon. "Mathematics in George Eliot's novels". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/38755.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The mid-Victorian novelist George Eliot had a keen interest and expertise in mathematics, which she studied throughout her life, and this had a profound influence on her work as a novelist. Not only does mathematics appear overtly in several of her novels, and particularly in the first two, but her mathematical way of thinking also informs the way in which she structures her novels and her arguments. In the first novel, the eponymous hero, Adam Bede, is a mathematically-minded carpenter and his thoughts about mathematics recur throughout the novel. This novel and Eliot’s second novel, The Mill on the Floss, include discussions of mathematics education that demonstrate the author’s awareness of curricular and pedagogical issues. Eliot’s imagery frequently makes use of mathematics and mathematical physics, which she offers the reader with the deftness and clarity of an expert. Her logical mathematical thinking helps her to structure her novels, and the epigraphs in her last two novels, which contribute to this structuring, frequently have a mathematical basis. Eliot’s narrators continually philosophise, and the arguments they offer the reader are repeatedly informed by mathematical and logical thinking. This is particularly true of Eliot’s philosophising about gender, and about the way in which women are frequently seen as different from men, particularly in the context of education. Eliot has a notorious concern for truth, and mathematical argument enables her to distinguish the certain from the uncertain, and to mock absurd presuppositions. Eliot was aware of current mathematical controversies regarding the teaching of mathematics and regarding non-Euclidean geometry; these appear in the novels. Mathematicians are often characterised as having a narrow and unimaginative view of the world – this view is counteracted by Eliot’s novels, which demonstrate how it is possible to use mathematics to engage our sympathy.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present work aims to analyze the theme of motherhood in the novels of the 19th century English writer Mary Ann Evans, who published her writings under the pseudonym George Eliot. Although motherhood is a recurrent theme in her fictional production, it has not been sufficiently explored in the innumerable critical studies I identified about her work. The focus almost never is on her female characters, on their experiences, though Eliot’s novels present a rich variety of women of diverse social classes of Victorian society, with different and complex experiences, including motherhood. Eliot, who opted against having children, portrays mothers in different situations, presenting those women who perform the role of traditional mothers and women who become transgressors of the values of the epoch and defy this role. I intend to analyze the representation of motherhood in her seven novels – Adam Bede (1859), Silas Marner (1860), The Mill on the Floss (1861), Romola (1863), Felix Holt, The Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1874) e Daniel Deronda (1876) – developing new readings of her fictional production, from the perspective of the feminist and gender studies. With this study I hope to contribute to new perspectives of this theme and to the problematization and deconstruction of patriarchal values and myths.

Streszczenie:
George Frampton (1860-1928) was arguably one of the most important sculptors of the movement that became known as 'The New Sculpture' in Britain from the 1880s to around 1920. Frampton's generation became known for its employment of detailed surface modelling, attention to anatomical detail and a predominance of bronze as a medium through which to express these matters. Frampton finished his schooling at the Royal Academy, after winning the Gold Medal and Travelling Studentship (which took him to Paris), in 1899. He went on to regularly exhibit at the RA and was elected an Associate in 1894 and full RA in 1902. His range of work was widespread in the fields of architectural decoration (internal and external), jewellery and silversmithery, commemorative medals, portraiture, all types of commemorative monumental sculpture, and ideal work. By 1908 when he received his knighthood, Frampton was a respected, efficient and dextrous maker of commissioned work and numerous prestigious schemes were afforded him. This range of work will be examined in depth and my research has uncovered many new works in these genres. It is the purpose of this thesis to resurrect Frampton's name ftom. the neglect it has suffered in art historical writings since the sculptor's death some 69 years ago.

Streszczenie:
The thesis entertains dualism as a valuable conceptual frame of reference in the twentieth century. For the support of this contention, the Introduction calls on the writings of Piaget, Althusser, Chomsky and Levi-Strauss. All these dualists share, in distinction from traditional past approaches to a dualistic conceptual framework, an insistance on the primacy of the empirical term (or at least on the parity of the empirical term) vis-a-vis the d')-structural or covert term in their works, which two terms, on their accounts, indismissibly underlie the phenomena they tackle in their various disciplines. The terms of the dualism of the main concern in this study, pertain to social psychology, or anthropology in the Continental sense. They are, on the one hand, (a) an updated Hegelian 'object' as contaminated with a Hegel-akin 'subject' (with the terms 'my world', 'perspective', 'lived reality', 'human reality', 'the self' as its usual expressions), and (b) the same 'object' as pure and uncontaminated with 'subject': the medium of society's 'carriership', indeed of the very being of society itself, whose positivity is overtly demonstrable in statistical charts, as Durkheim was the first to show. For that reason, not only the explicitly dualistic Continental students of the self upon whom the thesis focuses (the existentialist Sartre, Kierkegaard and Bultmann in the main), but also Durkheim figures centrally in the argument. Another task which the thesis undertook was to show that the Hegelian, implicitly dualistic element in Mead's thought (picked up by him in Berlin: the scene of his undergraduate studies), amounts, not to a flaw spoiling the orthodoxy of his behaviourism (as usually grasped), but (when pursued and pushed to its limits), to a fruitful basis of comparison with and a valuable contribution to the works of his openly dualistic European anthropologist colleagues, just listed above. Both goals are, on the whole, implicitly achieved in the thesis, as they are, in the main, phenomenologically approached, and the method of their treatment is to allow them to transpire through a structure dictated by an abandon to their implications in experience. The dualism of Sartre's social psychology provides the major basis of comparison to Mead's implicit dualism. A by-product of this circumstance is the emergence, in the course of the argument, if not of a Sartrian ethics, at least of an ethics which is very Sartrian.

Streszczenie:
This thesis summons a contemporary reading of George Orwell, evaluating his current role and function as novelist, essayist, and twentieth century cultural icon. The year 2003 marked the centenary of Eric Blair's birth and proved a productive year for Blair (and Orwell) enthusiasts. After nearly three years of research, my journey through Orwell's words and world(s) has undergone significant re-evaluation, taking me far beyond such an appropriate commemoration. In the tragic aftermath of 9/11 - through Afghanistan and Iraq, Bali, Madrid, and London - Orwell's grimly dystopian vision acquires renewed significance for a new generation. Few writers (living or dead) are as enduringly newsworthy and malleable as George Orwell. The scope and diversity of his work - the sheer volume of his letters, essays, and assorted journalism - elicits a response from academics, journalists, critics and readers. My research, tempered by a 'War' on terror and a televisual Big Brother, shapes these responses at a time when 24-hour surveillance is viewed as the path to instant celebrity. Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four provides unique insights into a highly pervasive and secretive regime, which in light of post 9/11 political trajectories is highly admonitory. These pathways and connections are produced in my research. I do not make easy links between past and present - Eric and Tony Blair - at the level of metaphor or simile. Indeed, the pages that follow traverse the digital archives and probe the rationale for mobilising Orwell in this time and place. I am focussed on writing a history and establishing a context calibrated to the fictional Oceania. This doctorate commenced as an investigation of George Orwell's journalism and fiction one hundred years after his birth. At the outset of the candidature, the Twin Towers fell and new implications and interpretations of Orwell arose. My research demonstrates that the Oceania of Orwell's imagining presents an evocative insight into the contemporary alliance forged by the Bush, Blair, and Howard triumvirate in its quest for world peace. Using Orwell as a guide, I move through theories of writing and politics, in the process uncovering capitalism's inherently hostile and negligent attitude towards those who are materially less fortunate. I began my work convinced of Orwell's relevance to cultural studies, particularly in understanding popular cultural writing and the need for social intervention. I concluded this process even more persuaded of my original intent, but shaped, sharpened and compensated by new events, insights, tragedies and Big Brothers. It is imperative for the future directives of cultural studies that critical, political, pedagogic and intellectual links with Orwell are (re-)formed, (re-)established and maintained. My text works in the spaces between cultural studies and cultural journalism, pondering the role and significance of the critical - and dissenting - intellectual. Memory, History, and Identity all circulate in Orwell's prose. These concerns and questions have provided impetus and direction for this thesis. They have also shaped the research. Few expect Orwell's totalitarian dystopia to materialise unchallenged from the pages of a book. The wielders of power are more capable and more subtle. Yet it is impossible to deny that the litany of lies and contempt central to Big Brother's Oceania is reproducible by any administration assisted by a complicit media and a malleable citizenry. The emergence of such a phenomenon has been well documented in the post 9/11 United States. This thesis has arisen out of the miasma of hubris, lies and contempt framing and surrounding Mr. Bush's war on terror. My purpose - not unlike Orwell's in Nineteen Eighty-Four - is to warn, not judge or berate. Orwell understood political rhetoric. He was not a prophet but a journalist who interpreted the nuances and temptations of excessive power. He had witnessed the extraordinary 'death' of history in Spain, and thereafter he raised his pen to combat intellectual hypocrisy and dishonesty wherever he found it. Under Orwell's tutelage, plain words pierce, probe and unsettle. They are sharp cutting instruments, fully capable of transcending time. How else are we to explain his enduring popularity as a writer? This thesis offers a critical and interpretative homage to George Orwell, a man who recognised the beauty of well chosen words, who loved and appreciated their enduring complexity and power. A framing structure has been chosen that places Orwell in close relation to poverty, class and politics, war and journalism. Individual chapter headings (and their contents) exploit Orwell's unique response to the significant talking points of his era. After resolving to write professionally, Orwell starved and struggled in Paris, and frequented 'doss houses' in and around London. I track these wanderings in chapter one. He studied the effects of the Depression and unemployment in Yorkshire and Lancashire (chapter two), and fought and was wounded in Spain (chapter three). Thereafter he turned to political writing and journalism (chapter four). What he failed to anticipate was a post war Britain overwhelmed by despondency and dissolved by internal devolution (chapter five). His concluding apocalyptic discharge, the dystopian Nineteen Eighty-Four, was directed at the higher echelons of institutional power and corporate corruption in Britain, America, and Europe, which I explore in chapter six. The world has changed significantly since Orwell (and J. B. Priestley) went in search of England's faltering 'pulse' in the 1930s. Englishness and traditional working class values have distorted and shifted in unexpected ways. These transformations are partly the result of war and the loss of empire. They are also a response to American cultural and economic hegemony, the privatisation of industry, offshore investments, the emergence of the European Economic Community, and the burgeoning global economy. George Orwell matters, even after this scale of change because he faced his own prejudices on the page and developed a writing style that enabled him to challenge the accepted orthodoxies and hypocrisies of his era. This is evident when returning to his essays and journalism, fifty-five years after his death. He possessed the ability to make readers feel uncomfortable, raising topics and concerns that we would rather not discuss. Denounced as a traitor by the pre-1956 unreconstructed left and feted as a hero by the self-congratulatory right, Orwell resists labelling and easy categorization. We owe him a considerable debt for exposing the likely directions of unchecked political ambition, and this insight should not be treated lightly. As I read him, Orwell was the last man in Europe, 'the canary in the mine.' He is a literary world heritage site of considerable iconic appeal and international significance. He is an outsider's 'outsider' perpetually facing inwards, and we need him now.

The main concern of this thesis is to examine the career of George Meredith (1828-1909), the late-Victorian novelist and poet, as leader writer for a provincial weekly newspaper, the Ipswich Journal. Meredith regularly wrote leading articles for the newspaper in the 1860s. -- In Chapter 1, I look at Meredith’s involvement with other periodicals in order to establish the context of the novelist’s career as journalist. Apart from the Ipswich Journal, he wrote for periodicals such as the Morning Post, the Pall Mall Gazette and the Fortnightly Review. I also survey other Victorian novelists’ journalistic careers to compare with Meredith’s. -- In Chapter 2, I closely examine Meredith’s engagement as leader writer for the Ipswich Journal. Although his contributions to this newspaper were anonymous, I attempt to draw a picture of his routine work, which he continued for eight years. -- In Chapter 3, I consider John Morley’s journalistic career. Morley was a close friend of Meredith and the novelist once planned to write a novel called The Journalist in which Morley would figure as a main character. I then discuss Meredith’s journalism and politics. -- In Chapter 4, I examine Meredith’s novel, One of Our Conquerors, in the context of anti-imperialism. The novelist’s experimentalism and prophetic analysis of the malaise of contemporary England established his status as the Sage of Box Hill. -- Meredith’s reputation as a novelist was at its height around the turn of the century, but a few years after his death, it was gone. My contention in this thesis is that his journalistic experience in the 1860s laid the foundation of his political thinking which later gained him his status as a public intellectual. His reputation as a liberal-radical intellectual, however, was doomed to decline with the fall of late Victorian Liberalism.
