Botanical gardens are bio-diverse flora-based natural attractions. Visitors to two prominent Malaysian botanical gardens were surveyed about their preferences for human oriented gardens’ landscape designs.There were significant differences in the preferences for garden landscapes with poorly maintained man-made structures and jungle-like garden landscapes(National Botanical Gardens), and the Japanese garden landscape (Penang Botanical Gardens) among Malays, Chinese and Indians (p<0.10). Even though heritage gardens have been preserved successfully in Japan, these gardens, especially the ones in Tokyo, have been surrounded by modern high-rise buildings that have entered the scenery of the gardens dramatically. This situation has become an issue from the perspective of cultural heritage preservation. This paper aimed to define the effect of modern buildings on a Japanese heritage garden called Hama-rikyu Gardens in the context of user perception by a questionnaire on site. Results indicated that the modern buildings should be eliminated from the scenery of the garden in the future since the participants preferred unspoiled views. eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2018. The Authors. This paper introduces a joint program between the University of Malaya and Kuala Lumpur City Hall undertaking the Therapeutic Sensory Stimulation Garden at University of Malaya Medical Centre to promote an inclusive society through sensory therapy. Good universal design practices of sensory gardens visited in the UK, Singapore, and Hong Kong is highlighted. Outcomes showed that users’ engagement with the landscape features promotes positive developments in social behaviours. In contrary, it proved a limited partnership between practitioners, researchers, authorities and users as well as non-availability of design guidelines for these gardens. This paper engages the users’ behaviour, their perceptions of use in sensory gardens and the reality faced by practitioners designing for these gardens, based on case-studies in the United Kingdom. Further investigation will be undertaken at Al-Bukhary International University in Malaysia once the completion of the country’s first sensory garden. Interview outcomes showed practitioners concurred on the design aspects that encourage the use of the area while the school staff had no strong views on the aesthetic value. Observation results showed pathway layout encourages behaviour, use and time spent in sensory areas. These outcomes are a significant argument in the conclusion.2398-4295 © 2016. The Authors. Investigation approach to migrants adaptation process in host countries has always been placed specific, in order to understand the whole connections to all aspect of life. In Melbourne, community gardens have been a place where immigrants start their interaction with others. The literature argues that the gardens can foster social inclusion, while at the same time providing space to preserve their cultural identity. This paper will investigate the adaptation of migrants within the garden setting, by considering the extent to which cultural practices in gardening affect their ability to adapt to the host country (Australia). The findings confirm a complex relationship between historical garden practices/culture and the reality of practices in the community gardens. Before the pandemic, residents in the Klang Valley tend to prioritize indoor living space to outdoor. This study analyzed the importance of outdoor green space in residential buildings. It consists of two objectives; to identify the type of home pocket gardens used and to evaluate the significant impact of home pocket gardens on the quality of life (QOL) during the pandemic. A survey was conducted using a five-point Likert scale and distributed to three housing communities within the Klang Valley. Botanic garden is associated with environment conservation, outdoor recreation and education programme for students. The learning opportunities that take place in the garden functions as a window of knowledge, a platform to build better understanding beside aroused cognitive skills during visitation. This study is aimed to identify the potential of Putrajaya Botanical Garden as a learning environment. The finding showed the male respondents rated higher than the female in all attributes associated with experiential learning at the garden. The purpose of this project was to develop a grant proposal seeking funds for the implementation of a youth-led nutrition and education program utilizing the development and maintenance of a community garden. The participants will be youth from low income and minority backgrounds in San Diego, California. The service partners of San Diego Youth Services TAY Academy will have the opportunity to participate in this community garden program to learn about healthy eating habits, the risks of obesity, and food desert communities.

Through a review of the literature on obesity, food deserts, and community gardens the writer proposed and designed a youth-led community garden program. The writer explored potential public and private funding sources, which yielded the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as a potential funding source.

The actual submission and/or funding of this grant proposal were not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.

Campus sustainability and sustainable food production at universities across the nation are gaining in popularity, and student led gardens are an important and distinctive part of this movement. Student initiatives at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) have led to the creation of a Sustainability Council and Green Fund which has provided a tremendous amount of support for the student led organic garden (LOGIC) on SIUC's campus. The purpose of this research was to provide a thorough, evaluative case study of the campus garden at SIUC in order to explore its past, its current structure and resources, and to suggest a model for its future. Through student surveys and qualitative interviews with key experts it was found that a paid garden manger position, consistent funding, more production, more volunteers, more awareness, and a critical look at current goals and practices were needed for LOGIC's continued success.

The peculiarities of gravisensing of hypocotyls and roots of the same seedling for the first time were compared under different gravistimulation conditions. Indirect experimental method, i.e. quantitative analysis of the dependence of amyloplast statics and kinetics on the direction and magnitude of gravitational force, was applied to assess the cytoskeleton role in the maintenance of polarized root and hypocotyl statocyte structure and amyloplast movements during seedling gravistimulation. The experiments were performed with garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) seedlings in the dark by using original devices ‒ in-flight centrifuge ‘Neris-5’ (biosatellite ‘Bion-10’) in space and centrifuge-clinostat (a device with two orthogonal axes) in the Earth for modelling of altered gravity and gravitropic stimulation conditions. The magnitude of the gravitational force was changed from microgravity (real in space or simulated by horizontal clinostat) to 1-g (simulated by centrifugation in space or natural Earth's gravity) and its action direction was changed at 90° or 180° inversion with respect to the longitudinal axis of the seedlings. Pirmą kartą buvo palyginti to paties daigo šaknies ir hipokotilio gravitacijos jutimo savitumai skirtingomis gravitacinio dirginimo sąlygomis. Netiesioginiu eksperimentiniu metodu, t.y. kiekybiškai analizuojant amiloplastų statikos ir kinetikos priklausomybę nuo gravitacinės jėgos veikimo krypties ir dydžio, buvo įvertinta citoskeleto reikšmė poliarizuotos šaknų ir hipokotilių statocitų struktūros palaikymui ir viduląsteliniams amiloplastų judesiams daigų gravitacinio dirginimo metu. Eksperimentai atlikti su sėjamosios pipirnės (Lepidium sativum L.) daigais tamsoje, gravitacijos pokyčių generavimui naudojant originalius prietaisus – borto centrifugą „Neris-5“ kosminio skrydžio sąlygomis (biopalydovas „Bion-10“) ir dviejų ortogonalių ašių centrifugą-klinostatą. Gravitacinės jėgos dydis buvo keičiamas nuo mikrogravitacijos lygmens (reali kosmose arba imituota horizontaliu klinostatavimu) iki 1 g (imituota centrifugavimu arba natūrali Žemės gravitacija), o jos veikimo kryptis buvo keičiama 90° arba 180° kampu daigo išilginės ašies atžvilgiu. Syfte: Problemet med hårdgjorda ytor, som exempelvis asfalt och tak, är att de inte absorberar dagvattnet tillräckligt. Vidare leder detta till att gräsytor och andra absorberande ytor runt omkring måste ta hand om det dagvatten som inte de hårdgjorda ytorna kan tillvarata. Översvämningar i urbana miljöer har blivit allt vanligare på grund av kraftiga regn och stor andel hårdgjorda ytor. Detta leder till att ledningsnätet för dagvatten blir överbelastat. Därmed behövs väl fungerande utjämningsmagasin nära källan för att efterlikna naturens naturliga avrinningsförlopp. Målet var att utreda vilken eller vilka utjämningsmagasin som främst bör tillämpas i starkt hårdgjorda små radhustomter, med avseende på effektivitet, kostnad och underhåll, då jordmånen har begränsade infiltrationsegenskaper. Metod: De metoder som har använts för att svara mot målet är dokumentanalys, kvalitativ intervju och fallstudie. Dokumentanalysen fungerade som underlag för fallstudien och intervjuerna fungerade som bidragande empiri för fallstudien. Resultat: Det utjämningsmagasin som är att föredra är rörmagasin när anläggningsytan är begränsad och jordmånen har begränsade infiltrationsegenskaper. Konsekvenser: I problembeskrivningen beskrivs problemet med att det blir allt fler översvämningar i urbana miljöer på grund av de hårdgjorda ytorna och de kraftiga regnen. Vidare beskrivs det att ledningssystemet därför riskerar att bli överbelastat. Detta problem bekräftades även i intervjuerna. Arbetet löste inte vilket utjämningsmagasin som är att föredra för alla typer av fall, utan för fall där tomtytan är begränsad och där jordmånen har begränsade infiltrationsegenskaper. Lösningen på problemet är därför att rörmagasin är det utjämningsmagasin som är att föredra vid lokalt omhändertagande av dagvatten vid dessa förhållanden. Vid tillämpning av detta resultat i verkligheten rekommenderas det att använda kostnaderna per meter och utjämningsvolym per meter som finns i arbetet för att komma fram till hur lång sträcka som rörmagasinet behöver anläggas på för att uppnå önskad utjämningsvolym. Poängsättningen som har gjorts för underhållet kan däremot återanvändas till andra fall. Begränsningar: Resultatet är tillämpbart i liknande typfall som för fallstudien, alltså vid radhus där ytan för utjämningsmagasinet är begränsat och där jordmånen har begränsade infiltrationsegenskaper. I arbetet har ett diagram tagits fram där anläggningskostnaden per meter framgår för respektive utjämningsmagasin och ett diagram med utjämnad volym dagvatten per meter. Purpose: The problem with hard surfaces, as for example asphalt and roofing, is that they do not absorb enough rainwater. Furthermore, this leads to that grass surfaces and other absorbent surfaces around having to take care of all stormwater that the hardened surfaces cannot infiltrate. Flooding in urban environments has become increasingly common due to heavy rain and a high proportion of hard surfaces. This leads to an overload of the pipe line for rainwater. Therefore well-functioning balancing trays close to source needed to mimic natural drainage of nature. The goal was to investigate witch countervailing magazine mainly should be applied in heavily paved small terraced plots, where the soil has limited infiltration properties, in terms of efficiency, cost and maintenance. Method: The methods used to meet the objective is analysis of documents, qualitative interviews and a case study. The document analysis serves as a basis for the case study and interviews serve as empirical input for the case study. Findings: The countervailing magazine that is preferred is the pipe magazine when the plant surface is limited and the soil has limited infiltration properties. Implications: The problem statement treats the issue with an increasing number of floodings in urban environments due to the paved surfaces and the heavy rains. Furthermore, it is disclosed that the management system therefore risks becoming overloaded. This problem was also confirmed in the interviews. The work did not identify which countervailing magazine that is preferred for all kinds of cases, but only in the cases where land space is limited and where the soil has limited infiltration properties. The solution is therefore that pipe magazine is the magazine preferred for local disposal of stormwater in those circumstances. It is recommended when applying this result real life, to use the cost per meter and countervailing volume per meter available in efforts to work out how long stretch pipe magazine needs to be built on to achieve the desired equalization volume. Rating systems made for maintenance can however be used for other cases. Limitations: The result is applicable in similar scenarios as for the case study, which is at a row house site where the surface for the magazine is limited and where the soil has limited infiltration properties. A graph has been developed for the work where the construction cost per meter is described for each countervailing magazine and also has a graph with stormwater volume per meter been developed. These diagrams can therefore be applied to other cases with small areas but with other measures of the plot. Therefore the result also is applicable to other cases.

Darbo metodai – tyrimai buvo atliekami 2013-2014 metais didžiausias teršalų koncentracijas Šakių rajone išleidžiančių įmonių: UAB „Idavang“ ir UAB „Kriūkų baldai“ teritorijose. Tyrimo vietose 100 m, 200 m ir 500 m atstumais nuo taršos šaltinių buvo vertinamos ant medžių aptiktos epifitinių kerpių rūšys, kiekvienos rūšies padengimas procentais ir poleotolerantiškumo indeksas, taip pat vertintas biotestinio organizmo sėjamosios pipirnės (Lepidium sativum L.) augimas kiminų (augusių taršos šaltinių zonose) terpėje bei azoto dioksido koncentracijos iš pasyviųjų kaupiklių. In this thesis industrial company's pollution is investigated using passive Lichen Indication method, passive accumulation and biotesting methods. Object of research: Two species of plants were selected: garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) and epiphytic lichen. During the evaluation we examined epiphytic lichen found on trees surrounding the territories of industrial companies and evaluated pollution dispersion by the growth of garden crass (Lepidium sativum L.) on sphagnum (which have absorbed the air pollutants produced by the companies) seedbed. Aim of the research: The aim of this research is to evaluate the air quality in the territories of industrial companies by the types of epiphytic lichen found in the perimeter and the spread of garden cress (Lepidium sativum L.) on sphagnum (which have absorbed the air pollutants produced by the companies) seedbed. Methods. The evaluation took place in year 2013-2014 in the territories of the most polluting companies in Šakiai district: UAB “Indavang” and UAB “Kriūkių baldai”. Darbo objektas - bandyme tirtos slyvų veislės 'Viktorija', 'Kometa' ir 'Early Gold', skiepytos į kaukazinę slyvą (Prunus divaricata). Darbo tikslas – palyginti pirmamečių slyvaičių skiepų kokybę auginant juos pastovioje vietoje ir persodinus. Darbo metodai. Dvifaktorinis bandymas atliktas 2008 m. LŽŪU medelyne, karbonatingame, giliau glėjiškame išplautžemyje. Vykdant tyrimą buvo analizuojama skiepų augimo dinamika, nustatytas skiepų aukštis, kamienėlių skersmuo, lapų masė, lapų plotas. Taip pat nustatyta kokybiškų skiepų išeiga. Darbo rezultatai. Tyrimo duomenų analizė parodė, kad intensyviausio slyvaičių skiepų augimo laikotarpio trukmė priklauso nuo veislių ir auginimo sistemų. Aukščiausi per metus užaugo nepersodinti 'Viktorija' medeliai, storiausi – nepersodinti 'Early Gold' skiepai. Didžiausias lapų plotas ir lapų masė buvo nepersodintų 'Kometa' slyvaičių. Kokybiškų pirmamečių medelių kiekį lemia tiek auginimo sistema, tiek ir individualus veislių augumas.
Master work analyse Environmental factors influence on the quality of the vaccine of first year's plum trees. Work object - trial investigated various plum species 'Viktorija', 'Kometa' and 'Early Gold', which were vaccinated into the Caucasian plum (Prunus divaricata). Work purpose - of the test was to compare the effect quality of vaccine for first year's plum trees, which grow in a constant place and for the ones after transplantation. Work method - Two-factor test was conducted in 2008 LŽŪU nursery gardens, albi epihypogleyic luvisols, which are rich in carbonates. During the test, dynamics of growth of the vaccine, the height of the vaccine, shaft diameter, leaf weight and leaf area were all measured. In addition to that, high-quality vaccines yield was also calculated. Work analysis - the analysis of test's data showed that the length of the most intense growth period of vaccine depends on the species and cropping systems. The highest growth level in a year's period was achieved by 'Viktorija' seedlings and the thickest were 'Early Gold' vaccines. 'Kometa' had the biggest leaf area and mass. So in conclusion – the growth quality of first year's trees depends on the cropping system as much as the individual growth properties of the species.

Som följd av den pågående urbaniseringen har de naturliga förutsättningarna för regn och smältvattnet att infiltrera i marken och återgå till sitt kretslopp på naturlig väg försvunnit i städerna. I Stockholm leds ungefär hälften av dagvattnet via VA-nätet direkt och orenat till reningsverken. Dagvattenflödet varierar kraftigt vilket orsakar toppar som överbelastar VAnätet och är svåra för reningsverken att hantera. Istället för att ledas ut i VA-nätet ska dagvatten strävas efter att hanteras lokalt. Arbetet lägger fokus på dagvattenhanteringen för takparken på ett nybyggnadsprojekt i Stockholm, projektet PARK 1. Projektet ritas av White arkitekter och ska certifieras enligt BREEAM och där nå den högsta klassningen Outstanding. Hållbar användning av mark och vatten är därför en av de viktiga frågorna i detta projekt. Syftet med arbetet är att omarbeta ett gestaltningsförslag av PARK1´s takpark samt att presentera lösningar för dess dagvattenhantering. Detta utförs med hänsyn till framtida klimatförändringar och byggnadens vattenkretslopp samt samordning och tillgänglighet. Arbetet utförs främst genom litteraturstudier, men har också kompletterats genom samtal, diskussioner och studiebesök. AutoCAD, SketchUp och Photoshop används för att illustera den planerade parken samt dess växter, funktioner och konstruktionslösningar. Dimensioneringen av brunnar och stammar görs med hänsyn till 100-årsregn för att klara framtida klimatförändringar. Med hjälp av nederbördsstatistik beräknas sannolik nederbörd för parken, denna mängd motsvara det dagvatten som ska hanteras lokalt. Avrinningsytan går från att vara en parkeringsplats där allt dagvatten belastar VA-nätet till att bli en takpark där dagvattnet utnyttjas till bevattning och 25 procent av byggnadens WCspolning. Dagvattnet blir direkt på platsen omvandlat till spillvatten och som följd blir tillförseln till vatten- och avloppsnätet från byggnaden jämn och stabil och färskvattenförbrukningen sänks.
As a result of ongoing urbanization, natural conditions for rain and meltwater to infiltrate in the ground and regress to the natural water cycle have disappeared in cities. About half of the stormwater in Stockholm is transported through the municipal water sewerage system directly to sewage treatment works. The flow of stormwater varies vigorously, causing flow peaks that overburden the system and treatment works. The aim should be to handle and use the stormwater locally instead of releasing it to the system. The focus of this bachelor thesis is how stormwater from a soon to be built construction project in Stockholm can be handled. The project, PARK 1, is designed by the architectural firm White Arkitekter and is set to be BREEAM certified and to reach the classification outstanding. Therefore, sustainable use of land and water resources is one of the key matters in the project. The purpose of the study is to rework a existing design proposal for the rooftop garden planed on PARK1 and present solutions for stormwater usage. Consideration must be taken to future climate changes, coordination among disciplines and accessibility. The work was conducted mainly through literature studies and complemented by discussions and site visits to reference projects. AutoCAD, SketchUp and Photoshop were used to illustrate plans and details of the park proposal with its plantations, activities and technical solutions. Estimations of the quantity of roof outlets and dimensions of vertical downpipes were made for 100-year rain conditions. Through quantitative analysis of precipitation statistics the expected precipitation were calculated. Which after runoff covers the irrigation needs of the park and 25 percent of the water needed for flushing of the buildings WC:s. The runoff surface is altered from being a parking lot where all stormwater ends up in the municipal water sewerage, to a rooftop garden where all of the stormwater is handled locally. This allows stormwater to be transformed into wastewater on sight, thereby contributing to a steady flow in sewer pipes in addition to help lower the buildings fresh water consumption.

AbstractCoal is a rock composed of organic compounds (C, H, and O), inorganic or mineral impurities, and ash content. Burning coal produces waste in fly ash and bottom ash (FABA). FABA that accumulates for a long time can cause environmental problems, such as pollution. Petrokimia Gresik Ltd. Produces FABA in large quantities, so it must be managed by external parties who have a permit to manage it. With the regulatory changes, FABA can be utilized for various products. This study aims to utilize FABA as a filler substitute for raw materials for NPK fertilizer and find the right proportion so that utilization can be carried out optimally. This study applied the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDAC) method to achieve continuous improvement. The results show that the most optimal FABA ratio is 3:1 with the addition of ZA raw materials with a specific ratio. After analyzing the test product on NPK 15-10-12 plus fertilizer, it is found that the NPK 15-10-12 plus fertilizer using FABA as a filler complies with SNI 2083:2012 about NPK fertilizer. The effectiveness test results on paddy plants at the Experimental Garden of Petrokimia Gresik Ltd. Show that FABA as a fertilizer filler does not affect the effectiveness of NPK fertilizer. This study shows that FABA can be used as a filler substitute for raw materials for NPK fertilizer.

AbstractThis chapter presents four cases of urban garden projects in and around Copenhagen, Denmark, started between 2011 and 2013: Prags Have, Byhaven 2200, Byhaven Sundholm, and Havnehaverne. All four urban gardens were community-based and public, yet they varied widely in their organisation, management, funding, and status of the sites they occupied. While two of the gardens were started by cultural activists, the others were the initiative of the municipality and a private land developer. All of them shared a vision of not only growing produce but also integrating spaces for social inclusion and community gatherings. Looking into their underlying value system and organisational structure allows us to compare how the different typologies of urban gardens would impact their ability to thrive and flourish. The authors were particularly interested in the agendas pursued by the communities who managed them, how these agendas related to the specific site and context, and how the communities negotiated public access requirements with creating an enduring gardening community. As both bottom-up projects closed after 4 to 6 years, it is relevant to look into what resources were needed to run them and what led to their ultimate closure.

AbstractThis chapter interrogates the changing nature of European order, and the EU’s role within it. It begins by exploring the ideas put forward by EU policy-makers that the EU is a ‘garden’ of peace and order, and that the world outside is often a ‘jungle’ that needs to be subjected to the EU’s civilising influences. It goes on to assess a number of key junctures in the search for European order since the end of the Cold War, and the extent to which these have led to any form of new order and stability. It then argues that one of the EU’s key roles in the (re)ordering of Europe has been the construction and maintenance of boundaries—geopolitical, transactional, legal/institutional and cultural—drawing upon work by (Smith, Journal of Common Market Studies 34:5–28, 1996) and evaluates the extent to which those boundaries have either contributed to the ‘ordering’ of Europe in the recent periods of change, conflict and crisis or created new challenges for EU policy-making. Finally, it focuses on the current ‘omni-crisis’ in Europe and on the EU’s role(s) in it and assesses the extent to which concepts of boundaries assist the study of EU policy and its impact.

Milk Marketing Board, in which a four to one majority of the House of Lords reversed the Court of Appeal and reinstated the judgment of the High Court to the effect that no interlocutory injunction should be granted where the plaintiff had an adequate remedy in damages. In Garden Cottage, the plaintiff was a small company (‘Mr and Mrs Bunch with limited liability’) in the business of reselling bulk butter purchased from the Milk Marketing Board (MMB), a statutory body. Though famous as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Gardens have yet to be securely located. Undaunted, many artists, architects, and scholars have suggested reconstructions with the help of descriptions in Greco-Roman literature, such as the illustration by the Dutch artist Maerten van Heemskerck. In his depiction, the gardens are very similar in appearance to the so-called Domus Severiana, one part of the imperial palace in Rome along the Circus Maximus, which clearly inspired van Heemskerck’s reconstruction. The idea of a flourishing artificial garden, rich with water, situated within a metropolis simmering in the desert heat has proven fascinating, not only in recent times but already in antiquity, when it had an enduring influence on both landscape architecture and on Roman palace architecture. The main floor of the Domus Aurea, and subsequently also of the palaces on the Palatine, stood atop high substructures and thus dominated the surrounding city while offering those within a privileged view. Integrating a variety of water installations into these large platforms increased the sense of an artificial landscape in the form of a “hanging garden.” Thus, vague and often fantastic ideas like those about the design of the Hanging Garden of Babylon inspired Roman builders and their architects and led the art of building Roman villas and imperial palaces to new heights.

Purpose of research - specify plants in the Botanic garden with antiquorum activity. In the collection of the botanical garden there are plants with confirmed antiquorum activity: Quercus robur, Betula verrucosa, Ledum tomentosum, Salvia officinalis, Inula helenium, Calendula officinalis, Comarum palustre, Rosa majalis. The presence of anti-Quorum Sensing activity supposed in: Chelidonium majus, Maсleaya cordata, Ruta graveolens, Plantago major, Equisetum arvense, Thymus serpyllum, Thymus marschallianus, Thymus vulgaris. The use of drugs from these plants led to the elimination of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in the patient.

Abstract. This review paper is written in order to specifically examine, explore, and evaluate vertical farming (VF) with the application of solar power as the powering sources for the entire farm. Nevertheless, a huge number of 2 billion individual suffers from micronutrient deficiencies and other related major health problems led by it. Moreover, with vertical farming processes we can offer a massive key sustainable food resource along with many advantages compared with horizontal farming (HF) processes, such cutting the need of water up to 95% while providing an efficient use of almost any space and many much more positives that will be discussed. Some positives are eliminating risks of biotic, abiotic, and climate issues. On the other hand, VF known to consume a huge amount annually of power per square meter in farming field of 3500 kW h, which is considered as a major setback for this process. However, with efficient use of green renewable power resources alternatives such solar panels, we are able to cut-down the power consumption dramatically to offer a true sustainable food resource for us and for next generations. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to discuss vertical farming VF using solar power to create a sustainable food resource.

In the early twentieth century the view of urban parks as health-giving, vital spaces in modern cities had been firmly established, however, a stark contrast was present in the position of small urban parks, funded and managed by municipal governments, and the state-funded, pseudo- scientific Botanic Gardens. Using Meanjin (Brisbane) as a case-study, this paper examines how conflict between local and state governments drastically hindered the construction of accessible and functional municipal parks, while simultaneously limiting the access of working-class and marginalised citizens to state government-funded spaces such as the Botanic Gardens. Lack of cooperation between the tiers of government, and the privileging of the Botanic Gardens as a site of middle-class leisure, also led to citizen-intervention and investment in council-run park space, which sought to exclude or limit the use of these spaces by those perceived to be ‘unrespectable’ members of the population. This paper asserts that the unequal and oppositional practices in the governing of park and reserve spaces in the early twentieth century, and the tensions between local and state authorities, led to a further entrenching of social demarcations in public park spaces, and negatively impacted upon the significance of park spaces in urban centres.

Labour abuse in the garment industry has been widely reported. This qualitative research explores the lived experiences in communities with bonded labour in Tamil Nadu, India. We conducted a qualitative expert-led analysis of 301 life stories of mostly women and girls. We also explore the differences and similarities between qualitative expert-led and participatory narrative analyses of life stories of people living near to and working in the spinning mills. Our findings show that the young female workforce, many of whom entered the workforce as children, are seen and treated as belonging – body, mind and soul – to others. Their stories confirm the need for a feminist approach to gender, race, caste and work that recognises the complexity of power. Oppression and domination have material, psychological and emotional forms that go far beyond the mill. Almost all the girls reported physical and psychological exhaustion from gendered unpaid domestic work, underpaid hazardous labour, little sleep, poor nutrition and being in unhealthy environments.

Like other bird and mammal species whose populations have been restored through conservation efforts, wild turkeys are treasured by many recreationists and outdoor enthusiasts. Wild turkeys have responded positively to wildlife habitat and population management. In some areas, however, their increased populations have led to increased damage to property and agricultural crops, and threats to human health and safety. Turkeys frequent agricultural fields, pastures, vineyards and orchards, as well as some urban and suburban neighborhoods. Because of this, they may cause damage or mistakenly be blamed for damage. Research has found that despite increases in turkey numbers and complaints, damage is often caused by other mammalian or bird species, not turkeys. In the instances where turkeys did cause damage, it was to specialty crops, vineyards, orchards, hay bales or silage pits during the winter. In cultured crops or gardens where wood chips, pine straw or other bedding materials (mulch) are placed around plants, wild turkeys sometimes scratch or dig up the material and damage plants when searching for food. Wild turkeys are a valuable game species, treasured by recreational hunters and wildlife enthusiasts.
