Streszczenie:
Between the Hong Kong’s densely developed urban flatlands and its lush and well-protected country parks lay a discontinuous and ill-man- aged network of “green-belt” areas. Serving neither as effective buffers, nor for ecological purposes or recreational opportunities, this fractured network of spaces has the potential to be recalibrated within the surrounding matrix of land-uses in the city. The project explores possibilities in reconnecting, redevelop and reclaim on the existing fragmentized green belt area in the Kowloon peninsula. Work along with the current planning framework, the project raises strategies to reconnect the disconnected green belt in alignment with the surrounding land use matrix. Suggesting the utilization of green belt by analytical logic with framework planning proposed. Further- more, the strategies allow reclamation of the green belt areas and improve its ecological status while increasing its bio-diversity. Ultimately, consolidate the position of underutilize green belt land- scape as a boundary free from development eyeing yet beneficial to the citizen as the new urban fringe.

Streszczenie:

This thesis, presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Administration/Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Management, investigates the business models used by performing arts festivals known as "fringe festivals." In the United States, there are three basic fringe festival models: the open access or Edinburgh model, the limited access model, and the adjudicated model. Interviews with artists who participated in fringes as producers reveal that the model impacts the participant experience less than the degree of scaffolding the fringe offers and the degree to which the fringe constrains producing choices. This thesis suggests a fringe festival framework, classifying fringes by degree of scaffolding and constraint, which can be used by producers to identify festival settings that will be the best fit for their needs. The framework can also be used by fringe festival organizers as a tool for self-reflection and festival assessment.

Streszczenie:
While fringe benefits create value in the employer-employee relationship, implicitly subsidized fringe ben-efits risk incurring economic deadweight losses. An increasingly common fringe benefit in Europe is the company car. Literature has showed how fringe benefits should be taxed for tax neutrality yet current taxations of fringe benefits cars in Europe have been found to cause significant deadweight losses. The prevalence of fringe benefits cars in Europe generally and Sweden specifically renders it relevant to in-vestigate how the taxation of fringe benefits cars affect economic welfare. Fringe benefits cars are also of interest for policy evaluations, both in their provision as fringe benefits in terms of equity as well as a means of transportation and climate change mitigation. Sweden has committed to ambitious GHG emission policy goals which directly relates the composition of the Swedish (company) car fleet. The thesis methodology was based on a Dutch framework for welfare equations and statistical methods such as regression analysis. Interviews were conducted with industry professionals to gain market insights and perspectives in the case of company cars. A deadweight loss was found as SEK 2 300 per fringe benefits car and the total market deadweight loss was estimated to SEK 186 million. The automobile market gives rise to many externalities and some fringe benefits car related were quantified. Internalizing a conservative externality estimate yields additional deadweight losses at SEK 425 per fringe benefits car. Many socioeconomic factors were found to be correlated with car expenditure, most of them positively: household income, age and a managerial like position. Gender as in female had a negative effect on car expenditure. The current taxation of fringe benefits cars (2014) is potentially problematic for Swedish policy goals concerning traffic safety, climate change and gender equity for three reasons. The current taxation of fringe benefits cars: (1) might have negative safety implications from a system perspective on traffic safety, (2) does not necessarily promote more environmental friendly cars on average and (3) is not gender neutral as women as a group has a statistically lower preference for expensive cars.

The years from 2005-2010 brought two major events that shook the basic assumptions underlying housing delivery in the United States of America. First, Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic flooding of New Orleans that followed brought into stark focus the folly of decades of short-sighted land use policy and housing development that largely ignored environmental vulnerabilities. Second, a massive foreclosure crisis exposed the economic flaws of a housing delivery system that relies on reckless and unsustainable mortgage lending and borrowing to drive the construction and purchase of oversized, inefficient homes on the periphery of the suburban fringe. This thesis proposes a new model for high-density, low-rise urban housing that provides an environmentally responsive infrastructural framework upon which homeowners can readily expand to suit their needs and desires. Such an incremental approach provides for more economically and environmentally efficient housing while encouraging formal and spatial diversity in the urban experience.

Streszczenie:
Publisher version
In the past 15 years, there has been a worldwide proliferation of arts festivals, including so-called "fringe" festivals, which encouraged more experimental and avant-garde productions. While fringe festival productions had the potential to generate significant income for producers, their aims were primarily related to artistic innovation and it is well known that putting on a fringe show is highly unlikely to provide financial gain for most producers. This is what is referred to in statistics and marketing as a "long tail" distribution, in which a minority of producers in a particular market earn the vast majority of industry income. However, for individual producers of live theatre, such a distribution represents high risks and potentially large financial losses. This article uses producer data from two different fringe festivals in South Africa to explore determinants of ticket sales and box-office income. Included in the analysis is a consideration of the impact of genre and pricing strategies on the probability (Logit model) of shows being in the top 10%, 30% and 50% of best-selling and earning productions. Results support the long tail hypothesis.

This thesis has sought to construct a diagnostic study of small downtown revitalization in Somersworth, New Hampshire, and Berwick, Maine. To develop a holistic understanding of downtown revitalization in Somersworth-Berwick, and other such small towns on the urban fringe, this research was divided into three broad parts: [1] local contextualization of Somersworth-Berwick and empirical studies of small town revitalization, [2] a local market analysis, and [3] a site plan and financial feasibility model. The methods used to complete this research included focused interviews, market analysis, and financial modeling. These methods are coupled with a review of literature and sought to answer what potential market-based downtown revitalization strategies are and how economically and financially viable these might be in the context of Somersworth-Berwick. While this thesis has fashioned a robust framework specifically in the context of Somersworth-Berwick's downtown revitalization, its methodological approach and findings are applicable for similar small and fringe communities. The findings of this thesis highlight that market-based revitalization efforts, such as catalytic real estate development, do hold promise in advancing revitalization efforts yet often require subsidy in the face of weak real estate markets and market failure. As such, broad-based and non-traditional revitalization efforts are key elements to a holistic and effective downtown revitalization plan.

Streszczenie:
This thesis addresses the fabrication, evaluation, and analysis of the probe tip of a non-vibrating contact potential difference sensor. The non-vibrating contact potential difference (nvCPD) probe measures the work function variation on a conducting surface and recent experiments performed to measure the size of surface features have shown poor correlation between actual and calculated probe tip dimensions. In order to address this deficiency, experiments were done and an analytical model was developed, including fringe electrical fields, that predicts the shape of the nvCPD probe signal as a function of probe tip geometry, work function variation, and experimental parameters. Probe tips were constructed with varying geometric properties and experiments using these probe tips were compared to a model. There was good correlation of the nvCPD probe output for a known work function change and probe tip geometry. The effective area of the probe tip resulting from electrical field fringing is expected to increase with dielectric thickness to a finite value, based on pre-existing electrostatic models for a shielded parallel plate capacitor. The minimum fringe field obtained in these experiments was for a 3.18mm diameter probe tip with a dielectric thickness of 0.20mm. The fringe field diameter was 3.38mm at a fly height of 0.60mm, representing an effective probe tip area increase of 13%.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, February 2005.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 261-269).
Numerous authors have noted that the patchy, sprawling pattern of development characterizing the metropolitan fringe results in part from the decisions of individual landowners regarding the use, subdivision, development, sale, or transfer of land. These decisions are related to owners' interests in their land: the set of benefits, derived from ownership, that enhance owners' physical, financial, or emotional well-being. In this dissertation, I develop a framework for exploring landowners' interests in their fringe properties. The framework proposes a set of interests owners might hold in land, explains how they are influenced by personal and external circumstances, and discusses how interests shift over time. In developing this framework, I draw from research on landowners' roles in land conversion and Marxist scholarship on "exchange" and "use" values in urban land. The framework also emerged from research conducted in the Austin, Texas fringe, involving a telephone survey of over 500 landowners, interviews with owners and experts on the region's growth, and a field visit.
(cont.) The study reveals that Austin-area owners are a diverse group whose land interests relate to monetary gain, the use of land for residence or business, and emotional satisfaction from the enjoyment of resources or activities on their property; and that individual and family owners typically hold multiple interests in their land at any given time. However, the study also identifies general "orientations" toward agriculture, enjoyment, and investment, which, with other key variables (including residency, parcel size, tenure, and location), may be associated with specific behaviors including use, sales, purchases, and transfers to children. The research also reveals that, over time, personal and external factors (such as intensifying development pressures) may serve some interests but be deleterious to others, complicating owners' decision-making, but explaining why some elect not to sell land despite potential profits, and why, over the course of ownership, individual landowners may play multiple roles in land conversion, contributing to the uneven nature of fringe growth. For planners and policymakers, the dominance of individual and family owners, their interests, and the stories of their histories with their land can inform efforts to encourage alternative forms of development.

Wilson-Fuller, Yvonne. "Land use in the Fairfield rural-urban fringe". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1991. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26428.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The Fairfield Municipality , a segment of Sydney’s rural-urban fringe, has been characterise d by its dynamic but variable response to the city’s expansion. Proximity to the city and topographic suitability to low cost urbanisation resulted in increasing speculation over the timing of urban invasion of rural land. The increased demand for urban land led to the increase of both land values and potential decisions of landowners, over land use and the sale or purchase of land in particular locations, were constrained by the Green Belt zoning regulations introduced by the County of Cumberland Plan in 1951. Landowner decisions are therefore only a determinant of land use at the micro scale. The existence of zoning defined and emphasized the divisions between urban and rural land uses though the release of Green Belt land invariably led to a swift advance of the urban area. The increase in land values resulted in changes in land use; agriculture became more intensive in some areas, with poultry battery farms being able to compete with expanding urbanisation, or land became idle in anticipation of urbanisation. These differences were a function of distance from the Green Belt-Urban boundary, availability of investment capital and the age of the landowner s. Landowners increasingly perceive d land as an investment rather than the location of productive economic activity, especially in areas closest to the urban boundary, hence agricultural activity declined within the rural zone. There was a clear relation ship between distance from the urban frontier and economic rent to land as an investme nt. Uncertai nty over the timing of the release of land, economic factors (such as capital availabi lity) and social variatio ns (between migrant groups) all contribu ted to consider able diversit y in land uses. The interact ion of locational, economic, behavioural and institutional factors produced an unusual and complex land market that is distinctive of the rural-urban fringe.

Streszczenie:
Social theory, influenced most recently by poststructuralism, has found renewed interest in questions concerning the subject, representation, ideology, and social formations. Rejecting earlier structuralist attempts to theorize the subject as ultimately tied to essentialist conceptualizations of society, it is suggested, rather, that individual subjects and social formations are constituted within a plurality of contesting discourses which form no totalizing logic, and in which no necessary relations can be defined. Attention has thus shifted to culture - its products, practices and representations - as sites where subjectivity (including gender, race, and class identities) and social formations are constructed, challenged and transformed. Social formations are viewed as mutable, their elements always able to be articulated within alternate formations. It is at the level of representation and dissemination, then, that a "politics of culture" emerges. This thesis examines Canada's Fringe Festivals as sites where subjectivity is negotiated and social formations constituted and transformed. These festivals are shown to provide possibilities for diversity and plurality - providing room for the production and consumption of cultural products which would otherwise remain invisible within the rationalized structures of Canadian society. This occurs through their accessibility (both to artists and patrons), their inversion of the wage relations of traditional theatre, their subversion of criticism (excellence and universality) and their transformation of rationalized urban spaces into spaces of "festivity." The festivals encourage interaction between patrons, artists and "representations" thereby moderating the influence of traditional evaluative media and positioning the negotiation of "meaning" in an intersubjective, "public" context. While an emerging literature on festivals has emphasized their "liminality" - considering them spaces of pure possibility where the structures of everyday life are suspended and transformed - the present work argues that such events should be understood as "situated" - inseparable from the social relations of the city. Whether examining characteristics of the Fringe "public," the selective images used in promotional literature, the production of "taste" across social groups, or the instrumental rationality behind state support of the festivals, the Fringe Festivals, their products and participants, are found to be constituted within multiple (often contradictory) discourses which simultaneously subvert and reproduce existing social formations.

25 years after India initiated its landmark reforms for economic liberalization, it continues to be challenged in balancing rapid economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability. As the world seeks ways to curtail emissions ahead of a critical juncture in climate change, India's choice - representing 17.5% of humanity, of a growth-propelled, market-led development pathway has the potential to offset global efforts with irreversible consequences. Kalinganagar, located in the resource rich northeastern peninsular belt, is a paradigmatic case of neoliberal industrial urbanism. Here, the demand for commodities and resources from a burgeoning, globalized, aspiring middle class subordinates communities depending on natural environments within their localities for livelihood security and most material needs. Habitats of its indigenous populations, once marginalized rural hinterlands, are now sites of multilateral contestations as neoliberal policies and governance enable their transformation into geographies of extraction. The ensuing severance of linkages between communities and their landscape results in the loss of a critical interest group in the preservation of natural ecologies. In an impasse between fallacious optimism and cynical pessimism, the thesis explores the synergetic prospects of grassroots governance and liberal capitalism, for a rurban model of regional development. An alternative method for locking a second-harmonic generation (SHG) cavity on resonance is described and implemented. The usual method, Pound-Drever-Hall locking, is prone to long-term power fluctuations from power variations in the incident laser. When using the second harmonic field for squeezing, these power fluctuations need to be stabilized with an additional control loop (usually a Mach-Zender interferometer). The alternative method, side-fringe locking, involves a simple DC offset on the second-harmonic signal at the desired power to generate the error signal. This thesis demonstrates the insensitivity of side-fringe locking to such long-term power fluctuations and that the noise spectrum is comparable to PDH locking-explained largely due to PZT noise length fluctuations off-resonance..
