Streszczenie:
AbstractWhen a neutral sphere is rotating near a surface in vacuum, it will experience a frictional torque due to quantum and thermal electromagnetic fluctuations. Such vacuum friction has attracted many interests but has been too weak to be observed. Here we investigate the vacuum frictional torque on a barium strontium titanate (BST) nanosphere near a BST surface. BST is a perovskite ferroelectric ceramic that can have large dielectric responses at GHz frequencies. At resonant rotating frequencies, the mechanical energy of motion can be converted to electromagnetic energy through resonant photon tunneling, leading to a large enhancement of the vacuum friction. The calculated vacuum frictional torques at resonances at sub-GHz and GHz frequencies are several orders larger than the minimum torque measured by an optically levitated nanorotor recently, and are thus promising to be observed experimentally. Moreover, we calculate the vacuum friction on a rotating sphere near a layered surface for the first time. By optimizing the thickness of the thin-film coating, the frictional torque can be further enhanced by several times.

Streszczenie:
In the presented work, a parametric multibody simulation model is presented that is capable of predicting the friction torque and kinematics of tapered roller bearings. For a highly accurate prediction of bearing friction, consideration of solid and lubricant friction is mandatory. For tapered roller bearings in particular, the friction in the contact between the rolling element and raceway is of importance. Friction forces in the contact between the rolling element end face and inner ring rib as well as roller cage pocket contacts are also considered in the model. A large number of tests were carried out to validate the model in terms of the simulated frictional torque. Influencing variables such as speed, axial load, radial load, and temperature were investigated. The simulation results show good agreement with the measured friction torque, which confirms that the model is well suited to predict frictional torques and therefore the kinematics of tapered roller bearings.

Abstract Objective: To examine the influence of third-order torque on kinetic friction in sliding mechanics involving active and passive self-ligating brackets. Materials and Methods: Wire-slot frictional forces were quantified and compared across five sets of brackets and tubes within a simulated posterior dental segment with −15°, −10°, −5°, 0°, +5°, +10°, and +15° of torque placed in the second-premolar bracket; a working archwire was pulled through the slots. Results: Increasing the torque from 0° to ±15° produced significant increases in frictional resistance with all five sets of brackets and tubes. At 0° and ±5° of torque, generally less friction was created within the passive than within the active self-ligating bracket sets, and the conventional bracket sets with elastomeric ligation generated the most friction. At ±10° of torque, apparently with wire-slot clearance eliminated, all bracket-and-tube sets displayed similar resistances, with one exception at +10°. At ±15° of torque, one passive set and one active set produced significantly larger frictional resistances than the other three sets. Conclusions: Third-order torque in posterior dental segments can generate frictional resistance during anterior retraction with the archwire sliding through self-ligating bracket slots. With small torque angles, friction is less with passive than with active self-ligating brackets, but bracket design is a factor. Frictional forces are substantial, regardless of ligation if the wire-slot torque exceeds the third-order clearance.

Neurophysiol. 78: 1619–1630, 1997. When we manipulate small objects, our fingertips are generally subjected to tangential torques about the axis normal to the grasp surface in addition to linear forces tangential to the grasp surface. Tangential torques can arise because the normal force is distributed across the contact area rather than focused at a point. We investigated the effects of tangential torques and tangential forces on the minimum normal forces required to prevent slips (slip force) and on the normal forces actually employed by subjects to hold an object in a stationary position with the use of the tips of the index finger and thumb. By changing the location of the object's center of gravity in relation to the grasp surface, various levels of tangential torque (0–50 N⋅mm) were created while the subject counteracted object rotation. Tangential force (0–3.4 N) was varied by changing the weight of the object. The flat grasp surfaces were covered with rayon, suede, or sandpaper, providing differences in friction in relation to the skin. Under zero tangential force, both the employed normal force and the slip force increased in proportion to tangential torque with a slope that reflected the current frictional condition. Likewise, with pure tangential force, these forces increased in proportion to tangential force. The effects of combined tangential torques and tangential forces on the slip force were primarily additive, but there was a significant interaction of these variables. Specifically, the increase in slip force for a given increment in torque decreases as a function of tangential force. A mathematical model was developed that successfully predicted slip force from tangential torque, tangential force, and an estimate of coefficient of static friction in the digit-surface interface. The effects of combined tangential torques and forces on the employed normal force showed the same pattern as the effects on the slip force. The safety margin against frictional slips, measured as the difference between the employed normal force and the slip force, was relatively small and constant across all tangential force and torque levels except at small torques (<10 N⋅mm). There was no difference in safety margin between the digits. In conclusion, tangential torque strongly influences the normal force required for grasp stability. When controlling normal force, people take into account, in a precise fashion, the slip force reflecting both tangential force and tangential torque and their interaction as well as the current frictional condition in the object-digit interface.

Streszczenie:
Axial groove is a common supply method of distributing lubricant within a journal bearing. Lubricant is generally fed at a specific supply pressure to ensure that the journal and the bearing surface are separated. Shearing action between lubricant and bearing parts creates frictions which contribute to power loss in journal bearing. In the present study, an experimental work was conducted to determine the effect of oil groove location on torque and frictional force in hydrodynamic journal bearing. A journal diameter of 100mm with a 12 length-to-diameter ratio was used. The oil supply pressure was set at 0.20 to 0.25 MPa. The groove was positioned at 3 different locations namely 00, +150and +300. Measurements of torque and frictional force were obtained for speed values of 300, 500 and 800 RPM at different radial loads. It was observed that the change in oil groove location has affected the fluid frictional force and friction coefficient to some extent.

According to the disadvantages of serious wear and heat fade of friction pad in frequent and high speed braking of friction brakes, and the insufficient power of electromagnetic brakes in low speed braking, a novel frictional-electromagnetic compound disk brake which combines both of these two brake principles is proposed for automotives in this paper. The excitation coils are designed based on the Zhang Yicheng theory model, and the compound brake prototype is manufactured based on the self-made magnetic brake pads and existing automotive brakes. The magnetic field and dynamic of the brake are simulated by using COMSOL Multiphysics software. The frictional–electromagnetic compound brake tests are implemented on the reconstructive disk brake simulation test bench. The experimental results show that the friction braking torque accounts for more than 90% of the compound braking torque in the process of compound braking, and the trend of the change is the same as that of the compound braking torque. When the initial braking speed exceeds 75 km/h, the electromagnetic braking torque does not increase with the increase in speed, instead, it decreases slightly because of demagnetization. The designed frictional–electromagnetic compound disk brake has good braking performance.

To address the fact that the performance of magnetorheological fluid decreases with increasing temperature, a high-temperature magnetorheological fluid and shape memory alloy spring friction composite transmission method is proposed, and its transmission performance is shown to essentially maintain stability under high temperatures. We introduce a composite transmission method, performed a magnetic field finite element analysis, and present the equation of torque transmission of the composite. The results show that the amount of torque transferred by the magnetorheological fluid reached its maximum value at magnetic saturation, but decreased with increasing temperature, down to 33.41%, whereas the frictional torque generated by the shape memory alloy spring increased with increasing temperature. When the temperature reached 100 °C, the frictional torque effectively compensated for the decrease in the magnetorheological fluid’s performance.

Streszczenie:
Continuous design and improvements in performance of roller bearings have resulted in an increased power transmission whilst size and spatial requirements have been reduced. Radial cylindrical roller bearings have followed this trend and due to their high performance characteristics (such as high loading capacity and high rotational speed capabilities), they have obtained a firm place as high performance machine elements. An essential characteristic of a radial cylindrical roller bearing is the minimisation of frictional torque for particular operating conditions. In spite of these improvements in design and operation the bearing frictional torque is still usually calculated according to the Palmgren method first published in 1957. However, as a result of the increased performance of radial cylindrical roller bearings and a corresponding wider range of application this Palmgren method is insufficiently accurate for the prediction of frictional torques in modern bearings. Whilst the literature review in this thesis identified a variety of bearing frictional torque calculation methods, most of these methods are based on various ball bearing designs and are not necessarily applicable to cylindrical roller bearings types. As a result an accurate frictional torque prediction method is required for radial cylindrical roller bearings because of customer's demands. Consequently, the current project is combined with the development of a method of frictional torque prediction (FTP - Method), which enables the frictional torque of purely radially and radially and axially loaded radial cylindrical roller bearings to be calculated accurately. The FTP - Method is based on the physical effects producing the frictional torque in a bearing, such as the EHL - theory and a contact analysis to determine raceway rolling resistance, and in addition takes into account the frictional forces of the rib / rolling element end face rolling and sliding contact. Comprehensive experimental tests have been undertaken on different radial cylindrical roller bearing designs (including cage guided and full complement types) for a minimum of three different sizes to validate the derived equations. Good agreement was obtained between the predictions according to the FTP - Method and the measured test data for the frictional torqye of both radially and combined loaded bearings. Moreover, the thermal reference speed and the thermal limiting speed of a radial cylindrical roller bearing can be readily calculated for any operating condition using an explicit equation in the radial part of the FTP - Method. The thesis also presents a calculation program to illustrate a method of bearing design based on the thermal balance within a bearing. The bearing is initially pre-selected according to its life time requirements using a life time calculation. After the lubrication method has been defined a thermal balance can be used to design the bearing.

Abstract: In lower temperatures, the conditions for starting the engine become more difficult due to several factors, eg, less lubrication due to increased viscosity of lubricating oil, the decrease in air mass and reducing the clearances between moving parts the engine crankshaft, piston and consequently increases the friction between these parts. A device was built to estimate the resistive torque at low temperatures in the range between -20°C to 0°C in a diesel engine NGD 3.0-liter four-cylinder manufacturing MWM International aiming to study the correlation between the starter motor efficiency in these conditions and the resistive torque at startup. The device allows the removal of the resistive torque without combustion in diesel engines, where lubrication is minimal and the friction between the moving parts of the engine is maximum. For measuring torque was used a model T40 torque flange from HBM manufacturing device coupled to the drag, comprising a flywheel and starter motor with a 9.3 liters also manufacturing MWM International and the flywheel was tested through a cardan shaft. Tests for the survey data were conducted in a "container" refrigerator used to transport perishable cargo such as frozen meat, suitable for testing diesel freezing temperatures (-50 ° C + ambient temperature) and installed in the premises of the Centre Technological MWM International

Streszczenie:
For decades models have been developed for predicting the size of the weld nugget and heat affected zones in fusion welded structures. The basis for these models is the welding heat input, which is fairly well understood for most arc welding processes. However, this traditional approach is not as straightforward for Friction Stir Welding (FSW). To date, there is no definitive relationship to quantify the heat input for FSW. An important step to establish a heat input model is to identify how FSW process parameters affect weld power. This study details the relationship between FSW process parameters and torque for three different aluminum alloys: 7075, 5083 and 2024. A quantitative weld power and heat input model is created from the torque input. The heat input model shows that decreasing the spindle speed or increasing the feed rate significantly decreases the heat input at low feed rates. At high feed rates, feed rate and spindle speed have little effect on the heat input. Process parameter versus heat input trends are verified by measurements of the weld heat affected zones. In addition, this study outlines and validates the use of a variable spindle speed test for determining torque over a broad range of parameters. The variable spindle speed test provided significant improvements over previous methods of determining torque as this new method enabled the torque to be modeled over a broad range of parameters using a minimum number of welds. The methods described in this study can be easily used to develop torque models for different alloys and materials.

This report describes the development of a modular friction test rig for threaded fasteners. This device can measure the shank torque and the clamp force during the tightening of threaded bolts, with a size of M3-M14 and clamp length of 30-160mm. The design allows the use of several load and torque cells and the range is up to 100kN clamp load and 200Nm applied torque. The test rig will be used for research purposes by Atlas Copco to determine the frictional characteristics in tightening and will allow the experiments on bolts with several materials, coatings and surface finishes. This report concludes to a design proposal evaluated with analytical methods and a prototype 3D model that demonstrate the working principle of the test rig. The measurements are taken from custom-made sensors that are developed with high standards, are easily interchangeable and can be calibrated individually. In addition, a device is developed to allow the user to change the stiffness of the joint. Finally, a future recommendation is made to allow the measurement of the under-head torque. This proposal is a breakthrough compared to other test rigs, and will assist in verifying the friction measurements and having high precision results.

Streszczenie:
This thesis presents a new nonlinear automobile dynamical model and investigates the possibility of automobile dynamic control with wheel torque utilizing this model. The model has been developed from first principles by applying classical mechanics. Inputs to the model are the four independent wheel torques, while the steer angles at each wheel are specified as independent time-varying signals. In this way, consideration of a variety of steering system architectures, including rear-wheel steer, is possible, and steering introduces time-varying structure into the vehicle model. The frictional contact at the wheel-road interface is modeled by use of the LuGre dynamic friction model. Extensions to the existing two-dimensional LuGre friction model are derived and the steady-state of the friction model is compared to existing static friction models. Simulation results are presented to validate the model mathematics and to explore automobile behavior in a variety of scenarios. Vehicle control with wheel torque is explored using the theory of input-output linearization for multi-input multi-output systems. System relative degree is analyzed and use of steady-state LuGre friction in a control design model is shown to give rise to relative degree singularities when no wheel slip occurs. Dynamic LuGre friction does not cause such singularities, but instead has an ill-defined nature under the same no-slip condition. A method for treating this ill-defined condition is developed, leading to the potential for the system to have relative degree. Longitudinal velocity control and combined longitudinal and angular vehicle velocity control are demonstrated in simulation using input-output linearization, and are shown to produce improved vehicle response as compared to the open-loop behavior of the automobile. Robustness of the longitudinal velocity control to friction model parameter variation is explored and little impact to the controller's ability to track the desired trajectory is observed.

Streszczenie:
For stable frictional torque transfer, wet clutch pads have the functional requirements of a high traction and a low wear rate with positive μ-V frictional characteristics. However, because of the intrinsic negative μ-V frictional characteristics of a friction material that has a static friction coefficient greater than its kinetic friction coefficient, the frictional torque transfer has unstable vibrations during the clutch-pad engagement. To reduce the vibration mode during the engagement of wet clutch pads, the kinetic friction coefficient should be made greater than the static friction coefficient through modifications in the design parameters as well as in the characteristics of the friction materials. To obtain positive μ-V frictional characteristics, it is important to manipulate the static-friction coefficient, which largely develops in the boundary lubrication stage during the clutch-pad engagement. The formation of the boundary film is described by slip boundary conditions and hydrodynamic lubrication films. It also includes the elastic deformation of the wet pad material due to the contact pressure. The wet clutch pad material is made of a porous structure through which the lubricant can easily spread when the applied load and sliding speed are imposed. The lubrication and the direct contact of the surfaces are simultaneously considered for a frictional torque transfer that lasts for less than one second, depending on the working conditions. In this study, some of the computational results with a measured μ-V friction coefficient covering both the static and kinetic friction during the wet-clutch engagement are obtained for the lubrication and the direct-contact pressures.

Streszczenie:
This paper investigates the kinetic and static frictional torque components in threaded fasteners during the initial fastener tightening, subsequent torque audit, as well as during the loosening of previously tightened bolts. In less critical applications, the peak kinetic torque value is often used for predicting the bolt preload. The peak value of the tightening torque and its frictional components are mainly determined by the kinetic friction coefficients between the engaged threads and between the rotating nut (or head) and the joint surface. During subsequent quality inspection of the joint after its initial assembly, an audit residual torque value (in the tightening direction) is often used for predicting the residual fastener tension and joint clamp load, as well as for predicting the stability of the clamp load. In contrast with the peak kinetic torque, the audit torque and its thread and under head/nut frictional components are mainly determined by the static friction coefficients. In some cases, the careful application of a breakaway torque in the loosening direction (loosening torque) may be used as a measure for the residual clamp load; similar to the quality audit torque, the loosening torque is determined by the static friction coefficients of the bolted system. An experimental procedure and test set up are proposed to investigate the effect underhead contact radius, thread pitch, surface coating, and fastener head versus nut side tightening on the static and kinetic frictional torque components.

Streszczenie:
By using an approach developed to determining the torque-tension relationship for bolted joints, frictional properties of several typical bolted joints were studied experimentally. The approach allows for the direct determination of the thread friction and the bearing friction between the nut and its bearing surface independently. Detailed studies were made on the influences of the size and shape of the hole, the use of a slot in a bolted joint, contact area and position, and other factors such as turning speed, coating, and the use of wax on the bearing surface. The contact area and position of the washer have a marginal effect on the bearing friction. The organic coating on the nuts reduces the bearing friction significantly. Nuts with organic coating over a washer with zinc finish provide the smallest and the most consistent bearing friction. Experiments on thread friction shows that prevailing torque nuts with distorted threads and nylon inserts provided trivial benefits for preventing “self-loosening” of the nut. Repeated tightening-loosening generally increases frictions in a bolted joint. It was noted that the data scatter of the experimental results of frictions in a bolted joint may overshadow the influence of size, speed, and contact positions. The results from the experimental investigation will help to better design bolted joints.

Streszczenie:
Pin joints are used in many items of industrial machinery where two structural members are required to articulate. A pin is assembled between typically four bushes. As the members articulate the pin rotates relatively slowly inside the bushes. A hydraulic test machine has been developed to load and articulate a 56 mm diameter pin held in four bushes, typical of that found in earth moving machinery and aircraft landing gear. The rig is capable of applying realistic loads and speeds of articulation, whilst measuring torque and angular displacement. The test machine design and operation is described. The pin joint is lubricated with mineral oil based grease. Joint rotation is relatively slow and hydrodynamic calculations predict that the joint operates in the boundary regime. During a single cycle the torque remains largely constant, with a static friction peak at the beginning and end of the cycle. Measurements of the torque during articulation demonstrate friction coefficients varying from 0.02 to 0.12 depending on the rotational speed. The contact stress distribution between the pin and bushes was estimated by an ultrasonic method. An ultrasonic pulse was sent through the hollow pin and reflected back from the pin-bush interface. High contact pressures causes conformity between the pin and bush and so the wave passes through. The proportion of the sound wave reflected was used to estimate the contact stress distribution. The results showed how the stress is maximum in the outer bushes and over a 60° arc of the pin. The results of the study can be used to understand how pin joints function and how they may be optimised.

Streszczenie:
A rotary seal tester simulating the abrasive down-hole environment was used to investigate the sealing, friction, and wear performance of the selected, “rubber” seal material molded into an o-ring configuration. Dynamic frictional torque and surface temperature within the sealing region were measured throughout the test duration. Test results indicate that the seal surface temperature is very sensitive to the variation of frictional torque. The average surface temperature is almost linearly proportional to the average frictional torque. Wear phenomena on the post-test sample surfaces were recorded by a surface profilometer. Observations showed that abrasive wear constantly produces a deep wear scar at the front, sealing edge of the journal surface. Furthermore, the reduction in seal cross-sectional diameter was found to be inversely proportional to the depth of the wear scar.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The Stick-Slip is one of troublesome problems which happens in scientific drilling. In order to clarify the mechanism of Stick-Slip phenomenon, it is necessary to develop a reliable numerical model [1]-[4] to estimate drill bit motion for various drilling conditions. We have investigated on an NDDE (Neutral Delay Differential Equation) [5] to solve Stick-Slip of drill pipe [6]-[8]. In order to solve this NDDE, it is necessary to determine the frictional torque acting on the drill bit. In the previous study, we have employed the Balanov’s [4] frictional torque model which is the function of drill bit rotation with four unknown model parameters. This numerical model calculates the Stick-Slip phenomena of the drill pipe model in the laboratory experiments correctly under the appropriate four model parameter settings. On the other hand, it is quite difficult to calculate the actual drill pipe Stick-Slip [9], because the calculated results change drastically depending on the four unknown parameter settings. In the present study, the frictional torque acting on the drill bit is defined as a periodic function and solved the NDDE to calculate the stick-slip of the actual drill pipe. The average, variation and period of the frictional torque on the drill bit were set under the consideration of measured top drive torques. The calculated numerical solutions of the drill bit motion and the top drive torque agreed qualitatively with the measured ones.

Streszczenie:
This study involved an experimental investigation of the hydrodynamic lubrication performance of dimpled seal-like thrust bearings. Circular dimples were created on lubricating surfaces and the hydrodynamic effects were evaluated. The load-carrying capacity and frictional torque were measured under a constant film thickness. The lubricating surface was observed to make clear the effect of the cavitation area on the load-carrying capacity and the frictional torque. Dimpled specimen produced the load-carrying capacity and it showed a signature hysteresis phenomenon. Cavitation strongly affected the phenomenon. In addition, the dimpled specimen could reduce the frictional torque compared with the plane (dimple-free) specimen. However, the hysteresis phenomenon of the frictional torque was not clear compared with that of the load-carrying capacity.
