Two resonant-type composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH TL) antennas terminated with novel termination circuits are proposed in the dissertation for dual-band and frequency-tunable operations, respectively. First, for dual-band operation, the transmission line approach and equivalent circuit model are used to analyze the characteristics of the CRLH TLs and justify the absence of one of the two zeroth-order resonances in conventional unbalanced CRLH TL resonators using open or short terminations. Then, according to the termination effects and resonant behaviors, a series of termination circuits for unbalanced CRLH TLs are proposed to enable simultaneous excitation of the zeroth-order series and shunt resonances. The proposed termination circuits are very simple and consist merely of a capacitor or inductor in series/parallel with a parallel/series LC tank. Unlike conventional dual- or multi-band zeroth-order resonator (ZOR) antennas formed by open- or short-ended CRLH TLs, in which only one of the zeroth-order resonances can be excited, the proposed ZOR antennas can operate simultaneously at the zeroth-order series and shunt resonances when the proposed termination circuits are applied. Also, it is demonstrated that the proposed antennas have similar input impedance responses, radiation patterns, and peak gains within the two operating bands. Secondly, for frequency agility, it is shown that a capacitor as the termination for a CRLH TL is needed for excitation of the anti-resonance within the band-gap region. It is also shown that the resonant frequency will vary with the termination capacitance. Therefore, by utilizing a varactor diode as the termination, the termination capacitance can be controlled by changing its bias voltage, and the resonance of the antenna can thus be tuned within its band-gap region. For verification, a prototype antenna based on the asymmetric coplanar strip configuration was fabricated and tested. It has a continuously tunable resonant frequency between 2.15 GHz and 2.8 GHz as the bias voltage is adjusted in between 4 V and 22 V. When tuned to resonate at different frequencies in the band gap, the antenna still exhibits similar radiation pattern and stable peak gain and radiation efficiency owing to the same resonant mechanism in the band gap. In the dissertation, design formulas to estimate the element values of the termination circuits for given frequencies are derived, and some design considerations are discussed as well. Both of the proposed antennas have satisfactory radiation performances and a compact size and are therefore suitable for wireless communication applications.

The thesis proposes a quasi-lumped equivalent circuit of the varactor diode manufactured by Skyworks Inc., and the proposed model predicts an accurate response for wideband applications. Based on the manufacture's pure lumped equivalent circuit model, a lossy transmission line section, i.e. a distributed structure, is introduced to describe packaging parasitic effects and enhance accuracy of the device characteristics. The circuit parameters are retrieved by curve-fitting the measured scattering parameters of the varactor. Besides, the quality factor of the varactor diode can be extracted from simulated scattering parameters of the device model for analyzing varactor loss under different reverse biases. The model validation is carried out by an experimental verification with a varactor-based microstrip tunable bandstop filter and good agreement is observed between the simulated and measured results. Therefore, the proposed model can be used for characterizing varactor-based frequency agile RF circuits with a high accuracy.
