<p>São Francisco é considerado um dos primeiros autores da literatura italiana. A poesia religiosa, inaugurada por ele na Úmbria, mais tarde atravessará o território italiano com outros adeptos como Jacopone da Todi. A experiência franciscana é emblemática pelos valores propostos e pela idéia de recusa ali contida. Aspectos que a tornam atual no século XX, sendo recuperada e “transformada” por intelectuais como Pier Paolo Pasolini e José Saramago.</p> <p>San Francisco is considered one of the first authors in Italian Literature. The religious poetry, inaugurated by him in Umbria, later cross the italian territory with others adepts as Jacopone da Todi. The Franciscan experience is emblematic because of the proposed values and because of the idea of refusal contained in it. Aspects that made the all experience actual in the XX century, being recupered and “transformed” by intellectuals as Pier Paolo Pasolini and José Saramago.</p>

Abstract Ramon Martí’s Pugio fidei (Dagger of Faith, ca. 1280) is beyond any doubt a hallmark in the history of Christian-Jewish polemic. Nonetheless, it has been claimed that the Catalan Dominican had hardly any influence on subsequent authors. This paper draws attention to the Franciscan Ponç Carbonell (ca. 1260-ca. 1337), an eminent Biblicist of the early 14th century, who is one of the first authors to quote the Pugio explicitly. In doing so, the paper also questions the traditional scholarly distinction between Dominican mission on the one hand and Franciscan Hebraism on the other.

The relevance of the Franciscan community is reflected in the San Francisco church in Quito, which was built between 1535 and 1755. This architectural work belonging to the Franciscan complex was implanted on a plot of land with an area of 3.5 hectares and was one of the first buildings in the Audience of Quito. Eleven mortar samples that covered the walls of the central nave and side chapels were taken from the church’s main temple. The procedure proposed by the authors is based on a combined methodology following the standards and protocols for the less-invasive extraction of heritage samples. Tests included X-ray diffraction, petrography, and scanning electron microscopy with a microanalysis of the samples. Mortars with a rustic composition and rough manufacturing were identified to differentiate two types of mortar, one of earthen with volcanic aggregates and another of lime with volcanic aggregates. The mining data validated the existing historical documentation, the imaginary process, and the stages of the established constructions.

In seven dramatic texts written by six Bosnian-Herzegovinian authors – Borivoje Jevtić, Štefa Jurkić, Nikola Šop, Nasko Frndić, Nada Đurevska and Dževad Karahasan – from the perspective of the art of memory we follow the construction of literary imaginaria on the examples of three Bosnian-Herzegovinian Franciscans (Anđeo Zvizdović, Matija Divković and Ivan Frano Jukić). The paper examines the relationship between historic reality and fiction, where in history was an inspirational incentive for dramatic texts, with individual members of the Franciscan order transformed into a collective place of traumatic memory. For this conscious work on cultural memory we are to thank both the history of remembrance and memory (mnemohistory) and the motivational associative images that have been cultivated in literature and the historiography of literature for more than a century.

O presente artigo é resultado da pesquisa do Trabalho Final de Graduação (TFG), do Curso de Pedagogia, do Centro Universitário Franciscano (UNIFRA), Santa Maria/RS. O objetivo da pesquisa foi investigar as contribuições do Subprojeto PIBID-Pedagogia do Centro Universitário Franciscano na formação inicial dos acadêmicos do curso de licenciatura em Pedagogia da instituição. A metodologia utilizada foi a abordagem qualitativa de cunho bibliográfico, acompanhada da pesquisa documental para análise dos relatórios de atividades do PIBID/Pedagogia enviados à CAPES nos anos de 2011 a 2013. Como subsídio teórico utilizaram-se autores como Brasil (2010), Marcelo Garcia (1999), Marquezan (2010), Santos (2013), Tardif (2013). Espera-se que a pesquisa venha a contribuir com os estudos e práticas na formação inicial dos pedagogos, uma vez que o PIBID é de grande valia para a carreira profissional dos futuros pedagogos em formação inicial, já que os mesmos têm a possibilidade de atuar na realidade escolar e nas diversas atividades em que envolvem o PIBID, permitindo aos acadêmicos a vivência de diversificadas experiências, assim trazendo subsídios para a contribuição na sua futura atuação profissional.Palavras-chave: PIBID; Formação Inicial; Subprojeto de Pedagogia/UNIFRA.THE CONTRIBUTION OF PIBID IN INITIAL TEACHER TRAINING: the academic productions of the students of the Pedagogy Course of the Franciscan University CenterABSTRACTThis article is the result of research work Final Graduation (TFG), the School of Education, the Franciscan University Center (UNIFRA), Santa Maria / RS. The aim of this paper is to identify and define how elements of the native Mesoamerican Nahuan beliefs are described in „Historia eclesiástica indiana”, the chronicle written by Spanish Franciscan friar Jerónimo de Mendieta (1525-1604). The Catholic monk exploited numerous components of the Nahuan religious system, while this paper focuses on Mendieta’s rendering of the legendary character of Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcoatl, Toltec priest-emperor as well as on the native speeches huehuetlahtolli, delivered by Nahuan parents to their children. The ecclesiastical historian uses the aforementioned themes to unfold his own ideas and narrative about the past and colonial reality of the Nahua people. Mendieta’s writings are compared with fragments of an encyclopaedia by the Franciscan Bernardino de Sahagún (1499-1590), „Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España”, the key source to studying religion and culture of the precolonial societies in Central Mexico. The paper also draws on the accounts of other colonial authors, such as Motolinia, Olmos and Durán.

The meditation on the theme of the Passion occupies a prominent place regarding the considerations and the texts of Franciscan authors, especially thanks to the revolutionary figure of Francis and his stigmas and also thanks to the rework of the spiritual and salvific contents provided by Bonaventure. By analysing the history, formation, and contents of this Passionsliteratur, particular attention will be paid to the text of the Vitis mystica by Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, providing new perspectives on the critical-textual problems that have always characterised it.

This thesis focuses on the Summa Angelica de casibus conscientie written by Angelo da Chivasso (d. 1495), first printed in 1486. Angelo belonged to the Observantine branch of the Franciscan Order and was its vicar general four times. Having documented Angelo's life and career, the thesis centres on the construction and purpose of his Summa. It assesses its originality within the tradition of confession manuals and the reasons for its popularity. It argues that the structure is very clear because Angelo intended it for the use of simplices confessores, by which he probably meant priests who did not have a university degree. He arranged his material alphabetically and in the longer sections, paragraphs were numbered, making cross-referencing easy. He included a list of authorities and explained the manner of quoting from them. Not all these features were original, but together they helped to make the Summa popular. There are several noteworthy features of Angelo's Summa. The procedures described had been laid down in earlier manuals, including the need for more rigorous questions - ad status – relating to the profession of each penitent and where this might lead to sin. Angelo however diverged from some earlier authorities by warning about excessive rigour. Circumstances were to be taken into account, and where possible penitents to be given the benefit of the doubt. The number of copies of Angelo's Summa printed throughout Western Christendom during his lifetime and following his death are a tribute to its importance. The period of fame however, was short. Martin Luther was a particularly virulent critic of the Summa, and the Catholic Church changed the method of hearing confessions, making much of it redundant, though it survived for some centuries more as a work of reference for confessors.

AbstractThe present chapter investigates the use of the expression bonum commune in two political works by William of Ockham: the third part of the Dialogus and the Octo quaestiones de potestate papae. The choice of these works is motivated by the fact that they represent the final – and most mature – phase of the English Franciscan’s political reflection. Relying on the findings of previous scholarship, the author believes it is appropriate to focus on the use of the expression rather than on a determination of its meaning, which seems to be taken for granted by Ockham. The contribution highlights three main uses of the expression: (1) as a criterion for distinguishing, along the lines of Aristotle’s Politics, between upright and deviant constitutional forms; (2) as a limit to the exercise of power by a legitimate power; and (3) as “a conceptual device” that aims to relativise the conclusions of political theory (e.g., the identification of the best constitutional form), motivated by Ockham’s awareness of the intrinsic contingency and mutability of historical events. Indeed, safeguarding the common good in certain situations, according to the English Franciscan, may require a solution that deviates from the ideal paradigm. In the course of the analysis, it appears that Ockham, despite his reputation as an individualist philosopher, consistently applies the principle of the subordination of the individual good to the common good.

This article draws a comparison between the thirteenth- and fourteenth-century library collection of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella and that of the Franciscan convent of Santa Croce. Such an investigation casts new light on the links between philosophy and po- etry which enliven Dante’s literary production. In particular, the author considers Aristotelian works as potential vehicles of literary knowledge about, for instance, Homeric characters.

This chapter focuses on the contents of sermons and pláticas preached in the Franciscan popular missions. Franciscan missionaries from the apostolic colleges of propaganda fide conducted itinerant preaching campaigns on the streets of hamlets, towns, haciendas, and cities throughout Spain and Spanish America. They were armed with a tailored message aimed at converting sinners and ensuring their eternal salvation. In addition to their doctrinal purpose to convert nominal Catholics, written sermons and pláticas were used as textbooks for missionary training. The chapter first provides an overview of the Franciscan science of oratory—homiletics, the art of religious preaching, or ars praedicandi—before discussing the Franciscan friars' preachings about moral, social, and political virtues. It shows how missionaries viewed colonial society while also providing an idea of the intellectual background of sermon authors.

The authors analyze the figure of the Franciscan Francesc Eiximenis, and especially his Regiment de la cosa pública, from a reflection on medieval pedagogy and politics. THE SULTAN AS VIS MAJOR – PERCEPTIONS OF THE OTTOMAN AUTHORITIES IN THE MONASTERY CHRONICLES OF BOSNIAN FRANCISCANS FROM THE 18TH CENTURY The paper attempts to reconstruct the genesis of the narrative about the Other in 18th century Bosnia, using the example of the monastery chronicles of three Bosnian Franciscans, Nikola Lašvanin, Bono Benić, and Marijan Bogdanović. Since the Franciscans were members of the ecclesiastical and intellectual elite among the Catholic population in Bosnia at the time, and since the chronicles were written for internal monastery use (therefore, they were less censored), the imagotypical statements in them reflect a Eurocentric view of the Others, with a particular focus on the representatives of the Ottoman government in Bosnia. In the analyzed Franciscan annals, there is an identification of the one who observes/writes with a historically determined subject, because the author is not some external consciousness, but places himself within the historical sequence, shapes the story and – takes a side. The oppositions between “we” and “them” are explicitly present; order (mostly) comes from the Franciscan order, and dis-order and the threat to that order come from outside, from the Other, who is also clearly identified. The narrative subject of the Franciscan chronicles is directly affected by the current relation of power and power (lessness), which is the result of the historical moment and the socio-political context, which also determines the image of the Other. The Bosnian Franciscans’ monastery chronicles are a confirmation of their specific role throughout history, and historicity, on the other hand, is a confirmation of the “self”, which is shaped in opposition to the Other and in relation to the Other. <p>There are a number of different classes of risk that must be addressed in the development, execution and operation of any major infrastructure project. Should the proponent fail to address all of these risks, the project may be a failure.</p><p>In this paper, the Authors discuss technical risks, highlighting cases where the initial formation and composition of the Project Team provided the conditions for failure to occur, sometimes with loss of life.</p><p>The Authors will discuss several Australian examples, including the Royal Canberra Hospital demolition, Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge collapse, and also the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge construction. In each case, the Authors show that organisational design of the Project Team played a significant part in the technical failures and the consequences. In Canberra Hospital demolition case, that the technical failure resulted in a death, is largely attributable to the design of the Project Team and political interference.</p><p>The Authors compare these failures to the successful completion of the Øresund Bridge, identifying those aspects of the Project Team design that ensured a high likelihood of success.</p>

With the advent of Advanced Persistent Threats, the complexity of the techniques, tactics and procedures used by the adversaries increased significantly and it becomes more and more clear that all industries are ought to adapt to the emerging threat landscape. While analyzing various industries and the importance of risk assessment within each of them, the authors of this paper shifted their perspective and started a more in depth review of the e-learning environment. Because universities represent the birth place of research and development, they also represent high value targets for threat actors within cybersecurity. Moreover, from a historical perspective, the first few viruses and worms were malicious programs that ran within universities' networks. Therefore, the authors conducted a research on gathering threat intelligence on actors performing attacks against e-learning platforms. As they are active promoters of the availability of education to everyone, the tools used among the experiment were open-source or free for educational purposes. The initial steps and perhaps one of the most effective projects on this matter would be the implementation of a honeypot environment for obtaining tailored indicators of compromise. In today's information technology field, automation is the aspect that drives any organization forward. A honeypot represents one or more systems (honeynet) with the purpose of detecting and deflecting attackers by luring them into the network. The importance of deployment of honeypots as a way of understanding who are the adversaries of e-learning platforms was studied by implementing a SSH honeynet in a Public Cloud environment. On this matter, the authors of this paper developed an infrastructure based in 3 geographical regions including: North America - San Francisco, Europe - London and Asia - Singapore. This is based on DigitalOcean Public Cloud subscription. The architecture is composed of low - interaction and high - interaction research honeypots deployed in all 3 regions to understand difference in attackers' tactics also based on time zones and geolocations. Moreover, for analyzing the data, log servers were installed in Frankfurt, Germany and Amsterdam, Netherlands. These are log collectors and parsers that are able to translate big data into readable and easy to use real-time dashboards. After analyzing the gathered data, the authors' conclusions are that this type of research is highly relevant to understand the current and future state of cyber security and more importantly to prepare the e-learning landscape for defending against emerging threats.

In a comparative perspective between Spanish and Italian literature, it is considered a possible intertextual dialogue between Lazarillo de Tormes and the figure of the medium giant Margutte, proposed by Luigi Pulci in his Morgante (published between 1478 and 1483). This figure is actually examined as it appears in the Spanish translation of Pulci's work by Jerónimo de Aunés. This translation is divided into two volumes, both published in Valencia, the first in 1533 by the printer Francisco Díaz Romano (canti from I to XVII of the Italian original); the second in 1535 by the printer Nicolás Durán de Salvanyach (canti from the XVIII to the XXV). With regard to the second volume, which includes Margutte's episode, there are no modern editions and therefore I used a its facsimile. My research tries to highlight some points of contact between Lazarillo and the translation of Aunés, both at content and linguistic level. Therefore, this study also tends to integrate the corpus of literary knowledge of the anonymous author of Lazarillo.

Public engagement in climate adaptation planning is often described as a matter of urgency. Global, atmospheric change indeed amplifies the need to build trust, transparency, and consensus. However, rushing to action can preclude a deeper interrogation of the very political and economic systems that framed climate insecurity in the first place. This paper reflects on a public decision-making tool that navigates this tension between pragmatic action and structural reform. In It Together is a tabletop board game that engages urban stakeholders in a probing deliberative process over sea level rise adaptation and social equity. Originally designed by the author to facilitate public engagement in the 2017-8 San Francisco Bay Resilient by Design Challenge, this game has been revised for publication and widespread release to designers, community-based organizations and city agencies. The revised version of the game invites players to challenge rules of fair play and rewrite common protocols of urban development. This paper will unpack the rule sets, logics, and opportunities for resistance orchestrated by this game to both ready pragmatic opportunities for action and unearth more enduring strategies for sharing power and resources.

Abstract The adoption of fossil-based hydrocarbon polymer composites has been successful in both the automotive and aircraft industries, and is rapidly expanding into buildings and civil infrastructure. One challenge to broader adoption of polymer composites in buildings and civil infrastructure is a limited ability to model the synergistic effects of the combined physical/chemical processes of environmental exposure and mechanical loading. Unlike other building materials, long-term experience and field performance data of polymer composites in buildings and civil infrastructure applications does not exist. The first and largest composite building system used in a high-rise exterior in the US is the facade of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) completed in 2015. Since historical, experience-based service life models for composite building applications are not available, it is crucial to build multiphysical-based models in order to predict composite service life performance on a semi-centennial or centennial time scale. This paper uses a parametrically homogenized deterioration model to hierarchical model the thermo-chemical-mechanical degradation at the structural length scale and proposes this computational model as a component to complete a new multi-physics-based service life prediction framework. This effort consists of three steps: (i) use the theory of synergistic effects between ultraviolet exposure and moisture exposure degradation processes developed by the authors to generate a residual, deterioration-induced damage variable field, (ii) implement the residual damage field as the initiation of a continuum damage model (CDM) at structure length scale, and (iii) recreate one 3D façade plate of the SFMOMA and perform parametric damage analysis.

In the mid-1960’s Brazilian educational theorist Paulo Freire revolutionized the country’s educational system by going into communities and teaching the illiterate poor how to read. He equated literacy with an improved life, linked knowledge to power, and wrote of his experiences in his seminal work, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968).¹ Freire’s ideas developed into a social movement and became the foundation for what we today refer to as Critical Pedagogy. His work with communities was groundbreaking and viewed as dangerous by the government and also the factory and farm owners who feared that educated citizens would rise up and demand better wages and increased rights. His teaching methods, based on participatory engagement rather than the common practice of outside experts dictating the “what” and “how” of a curriculum were extremely effective. So effective, they eventually landed Freire in jail and later exile from his country. Freire’s potent process for teaching one to read utilized visual markers to stimulate engaged conversation. He collaborated with Brazilian artist Francisco Brennand who painted a series of scenes on clay tiles. These scenes, familiar to poor rural communities, depicted humans farming, hunting, and interacting so as to draw out distinctions between nature and culture, various social structures, and the potential for education to empower. By refusing to use coded or professional language he introduced the phrase “democratization of culture” and allowed communities a way to identify and express what they wanted for themselves rather than what they were told they should want. Do analogies exist to participatory design? Are there lessons to be learned from Freire’s process? And, can Brennand’s tiles serve as an example of how to convey the needs and goals of a user to the design team when both may communicate in distinct professional jargon? This paper will investigate these questions through an analysis of the use of graphic cards developed by an interdisciplinary team for engaging schoolteachers in the design process for educational environments. The author met with one of the creators of these cards, called the Learning Spaces Idea Tool Kit, in order to investigate this process. The cards attempt to provide a common means of communication for educators and architects to more effectively engage in the design or renovation of their schools. They present a number of phrases describing teaching concepts as spatial relationships such as: faculty “scrum space”, library as kitchen vs. library as grocery store, and develop self-regulated learners. The flip side of the card presents photographs depicting learning environments that support the learning concepts. The designers are then able to effectively translate the conversations spurred by the cards into floor plan configurations. This process of engagement through a common language leverages the expertise of educators and recognizes that only those affected by an environment have any right to its determination. Participatory design, like Freire’s literacy workshops, empowers the user to be active shapers of the world around us.

Two GRI–compiled GIS data sets of the geology and geohazards of the parks are the principal deliverables of the GRI. The GRI GIS data are available on the GRI publications website http://go.nps.gov/gripubs and through the NPS Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) portal https://irma.nps.gov/App/Portal/Home. Enter “GRI” as the search text and select a park from the unit list. Writing of this report was based on those data and the interpretations of the source map authors (see “GRI Products” and “Acknowledgements”). A geologic map poster illustrates the geology GRI GIS data set and serves as a primary figure for this GRI report. No poster was prepared for the geohazards GRI GIS data set. Additionally, figure 7 of this report illustrates the locations of the major geologic features in the parks. Unlike the poster, which is divided into a northern and southern portion to show detail while accommodating the parks’ length, figure 7 is a single-page, simplified map. The features labeled on figure 7 are discussed in the “Geologic History, Features, and Processes” chapter. To provide a context of geologic time, this report includes a geologic time scale (see "Geologic History, Features, and Processes"). The parks’ geologic story encompasses 200 million years, starting in the Jurassic Period. Following geologic practice, the time scale is set up like a stratigraphic column, with the oldest units at the bottom and the youngest units at the top. Organized in this manner, the geologic time scale table shows the relative ages of the rock units that underlie the parks and the unconsolidated deposits that lie at the surface. Reading the “Geologic Event” column in the table, from bottom to top, will provide a chronologic order of the parks’ geologic history. The time scale includes only the map units within the parks that also appear on the geologic map poster; that is, map units of the geohazards data are not included. Geology is a complex science with many specialized terms. This report provides definitions of geologic terms at first mention, typically in parentheses following the term. Geologic units in the GRI GIS data are referenced in this report using map unit symbols; for example, map unit KJfrc stands for the Cretaceous (K) and Jurassic (J) Franciscan Complex (f), Redwood Creek schist (rc), which underlies a portion of the Redwood Creek watershed (see “GRI Products”).

Under the CITS project, studies were carried out in two Asian and two Latin American cities to explore how NAMAs, a new financial mechanism being developed under the UNFCCC, may support emissions reductions from urban transport policies and programs.
