This project proposes to develop an improved system to process Soldiers at the Personnel Processing Center (PPC) located at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. This processing center is the final pre-deployment requirement prior to missions in support of the Global War on Terror. The PPC services the 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell’s tenant units and receives a high volume of Soldiers for processing. It is in the interest of Soldiers, their families, and senior leadership to process deploying troops accurately and rapidly. The current system, though functioning and meeting the Army’s needs, has inherent inefficiencies that limit its capacities and ability to maximize utilization.

Streszczenie:
The U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories (USACERL) has been developing and adopting improved sludge dewatering systems for U.S. Army wastewater treatment plants. USACERL selected reed beds as the best alternative for future Army sludge dewatering systems based on the system's economical and technical feasibility and on a demonstration of the technology at Fort Campbell, KY, USA. This paper compares the Army's options for upgrading Fort Campbell's sand-drying beds, analyzes costs, discusses sludge hydraulic and solids loading rate data from existing reed bed operations in the United States, and presents 5 years' operational data from Fort Campbell. Options considered for comparison included: land application of sludge at training fields, wedgewater beds, vacuum-assisted beds, wedgewater beds and composting, mechanical dewatering systems, and a “no change” option in which sand-drying beds would have been retained. In conclusion, this paper summarizes advantages and limitations of reed bed sludge dewatering. Advantages of reed beds may include: low investment especially when sand-drying beds are converted to reed beds, savings of sludge removal costs, and the benefits inherent to using a simple and economical technology. Limitations may include: large land requirements and little scientific understanding of this empirical technology. The challenge will be to further develop appropriate disposal technologies to meet new U.S. sludge regulations.

The Nipawin delta extends eastward from the town of Nipawin in east-central Saskatchewan. The Prince Albert and Fort à la Corne deltas formed in Lake Saskatchewan at the mouths of the South and North Saskatchewan rivers, whereas the Nipawin and Mossy vale deltas formed in Lake Agassiz at the mouth of the Saskatchewan River. These deltas became lower in elevation and younger eastward. Clays beneath the Nipawin and Mossyvale deltas can be traced beneath the Prince Albert and Fort à la Corne deltas with little change in thickness, suggesting that most of the clays beneath the Nipawin and Mossyvale deltas were deposited during the formation of the Prince Albert and Fort à la Corne deltas. The Nipawin delta formed between 10 200 and 9500 BP. The Campbell strandline (Emerson phase) was the shoreline of the Nipawin delta. The Mossyvale delta formed about 9500 BP. The surface of the Mossyvale delta (McCauleyville level) is about 40 m below the surface of the Nipawin delta (Campbell level).

A strong earthquake was recorded by Hudson's Bay Company trader–explorer Robert Campbell on December 27, 1850 at Fort Selkirk, Yukon Territory. A search of records from the region failed to find any other record of the earthquake. The duration of shaking and lack of aftershocks at Fort Selkirk suggest that the earthquake exceeded magnitude 6 and did not have a local source. The modified Mercalli intensity of VI or greater at Fort Selkirk is not compatible with lower intensities experienced there from large earthquakes along the plate margin and in the Mackenzie Mountains. The Denali fault system in southwestern Yukon and the southern Richardson Mountains are the most likely sources of the earthquake.

The crash of a chartered Army jetliner in Gander, Newfoundland in 1985 resulted in the deaths of 248 soldiers from one battalion stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. This article describes the multiple mourning rituals enacted by the geographically localized family members, other battalion members, and other soldiers at the base and examines the functions of these rituals in contributing to group and individual recovery. Such rituals encouraged the participants to confront their losses, separate the past from the present and future and, thereby, promoted individual and group autonomy. Autonomy was demonstrated by individually and collectively working-through their losses, reintegrating into the community, reaffirming community solidarity, and strengthening community ties.

BACKGROUND: Caffeine-containing products and dietary supplements are widely used by military populations, but little is known about their use by aviation personnel. This study assessed self-reported sleep, fitness, work-schedules, and caffeine/energy drink use.METHODS: A standardized survey was conducted in person by study personnel using tablet computers. A total of 188 aircrew members from the Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, KY, participated in the survey. Focus groups were conducted with a subset of 47 subjects.RESULTS: The majority of subjects reported their physical fitness, health, and diets were good. They reported sleeping about 6 h per day and stated they needed additional sleep to feel fully rested. Their caffeine consumption averaged 346 ± 23 mg · d−1 with most derived from coffee (139 ± 12 mg · d−1) and energy drinks (110 ± 13 mg · d−1). About half (55%) of participants used energy drinks at least once per week and they consumed greater amounts of caffeine than nonusers. Focus group data indicated crewmembers primarily consumed energy drinks to enhance performance degraded by variations in work schedules and lack of sufficient sleep. Participants expressed a desire for additional education on diets and energy drinks as well as on aeromedical policies governing energy drink and supplement use.CONCLUSIONS: Caffeinated products, including coffee and energy drinks, are routinely used by Army aircrews to increase alertness. Aircrew personnel consider them generally safe, but would like to receive education about these beverages, other dietary issues, and Army policies governing their use in aircrew.Bukhari AS, Caldwell JA, DiChiara AJ, Merrill EP, Wright AO, Cole RE, Hatch-McChesney A, McGraw SM, Lieberman HR. Streszczenie:
It has been proposed that the Army needs a high-level training capability for asymmetric missions. Current training programs are focused on conventional warfare and are mainly limited to units that are co-located. Where training capability exists, the scenarios have limited interactivity and fail to address a variety of cross-cultural communication issues that troops encounter in the real world. U.S. Army's Research, Development, and Engineering Command, Simulation, and Training Technology Center in Orlando, Florida, has been conducting an Army Technology Objective (ATO) using massively multi-player (MMP) gaming technology to address these issues. The objective of the ATO is to develop a large-scale, persistent, distributed simulation environment to train soldiers. The research is focused on evaluating the use of MMPs for Army training for operations in asymmetric warfare environments. Weapons of mass destruction, terrorists' actions, crowd and hostage situations, peacekeeping, psychological operations, and civil affairs will be possible interactions faced by the users. OneSAF Objective System computer generated entities will augment the large numbers of real people who will populate the scenarios. The various Armed Forces will be able to engage in such simulation environments anytime, anywhere, using standard personal computers (PCs) connected via the Internet. The paper details research in the formative evaluation of Internet-based training using soldier participants and gaming technologies. Initial test results with the 101st Airborne Division of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and the Illinois Army National Guard are presented to indicate the potential such technology has to meet new asymmetric training needs and optimize use of soldiers' time while preparing for live training events and actual deployment. The paper also addresses the tools needed to build the training environments and required After Action Review capabilities.

We prove that the probability substitution matrices obtained from a continuous-time Markov chain form a multiplicatively closed set if and only if the rate matrices associated with the chain form a linear space spanning a Lie algebra. The key original contribution we make is to overcome an obstruction, due to the presence of inequalities that are unavoidable in the probabilistic application, which prevents free manipulation of terms in the Baker–Campbell–Haursdorff formula.

Above the entrance doorway at Carnasserie Castle in mid-Argyll there is a finely carved panel containing the coat of arms of Archibald Campbell, fifth Earl of Argyll, and his first wife, Lady Jean Stewart. Along the foot of the panel, in the script employed in Gaelic manuscripts, there is a motto which reads: ‘DIA LE UA NDUIBH[N]E’ or ‘God be with Ó Duibhne.’ The designation Ó Duibhne referred to the fifth Earl of Argyll as chief of Clan Campbell. The inscription and its setting provide a perfect illustration of the different cultures and traditions which the fifth Earl combined in his personal and public life and permitted him to be both a Protestant earl and a godly Gael. The short Gaelic phrase of the motto was the first post-Reformation inscription within the Gaidhealtachd or Gaelic-speaking area, which covered the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

In an era of heightened great power competition, debates about American grand strategy in the Indo-Pacific region have returned to the fore. This review essay looks at three recent volumes that directly address such debates. After introducing the concept of grand strategy, Part I reviews each of the books individually in sequence, outlining their scope, contents, and contributions. Part II then integrates the contributions of each of the volumes into a broader discussion relating to four pertinent issues: American perspectives on "Asia"; international relations (IR) theory; American strategic culture; and the rise of China, before concluding. The books under review are to differing degrees orientated toward one of the core IR theory paradigms: realism (Green), liberalism (Campbell), and constructivism/ critical approaches (Kang). As such, read together, they contribute to a multi-faceted theoretical understanding of US grand strategy in the Indo Pacific that will be of significant value to both scholars and practitioners.

Abstract This is a meta-reflection on the methodological and epistemological challenges of doing ethnographic theology in a context outside the church or religious communities. Particularly, it argues that in a multi- or inter-disciplinary setting theologians are placed in a precarious position when it comes to use of language, theories and concepts if they want to speak simultaneously to the people they encounter in the field and to their “own” scientific community. The article asks how a researcher can do theology in a secular environment without doing violence towards ones interlocutors and still be considered to “belong” in the theological community? Based on the lived experiences of ongoing research and particularly concerning the gathering and telling the stories of Women in the Natural sciences, the author weaves together Eileen Campbell-Reed’s and Sarah Coakley’s methodological frameworks in order to present her own method of contemplative dance. The author uses rich metaphors and the sensory experience of “Home” and “Exile” in relationship to the movements in a foot to bring forth her embodied insights about dancing in the messy entanglement of ethnographic research.

Streszczenie:
This study focused on developing a novel semi-empirical model for maize’s light extinction coefficient (kp) by integrating multiple remotely sensed vegetation features from several different remote sensing platforms. The proposed kp model’s performance was independently evaluated using Campbell’s (1986) original and simplified kp approaches. The Limited Irrigation Research Farm (LIRF) in Greeley, Colorado, and the Irrigation Innovation Consortium (IIC) in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA, served as experimental sites for developing and evaluating the novel maize kp model. Data collection involved multiple remote sensing platforms, including Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, Planet CubeSat, a Multispectral Handheld Radiometer, and an unmanned aerial system (UAS). Ground measurements of leaf area index (LAI) and fractional vegetation canopy cover (fc) were included. The study evaluated the novel kp model through a comprehensive analysis using statistical error metrics and Sobol global sensitivity indices to assess the performance and sensitivity of the models developed for predicting maize kp. Results indicated that the novel kp model showed strong statistical regression fitting results with a coefficient of determination or R2 of 0.95. Individual remote sensor analysis confirmed consistent regression calibration results among Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, Planet CubeSat, the MSR, and UAS. A comparison with Campbell’s (1986) kp models reveals a 44% improvement in accuracy. A global sensitivity analysis identified the role of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as a critical input variable to predict kp across sensors, emphasizing the model’s robustness and potential practical environmental applications. Further research should address sensor-specific variations and expand the kp model’s applicability to a diverse set of environmental and microclimate conditions.

For modeling of hydrologic processes that occur on the scale of watersheds to characterize the availability of water in it, you need a physical model that can represents the topography, vegetation and soil characteristics. On the other hand, the variables that provide atmospheric forcing require great accuracy and models are sensitive to them mainly to rainfall, it is the main input in hydrological modeling. This study focuses on evaluation of four physical parameters of soil in hydrologic modeling in Giant Foot basin, SP, Brazil with DBHM model. The study period covers the years 2009-2014, FAO’s soil maps were used for the physical characterization of the basin, and the MODIS for vegetation data (LAI and FPAR). Domain of 500 m for spatial resolution in a basin area of 11.94 km2. Was used a basic configuration that let determine the influence of soil parameters in the water content results for the surface layer up to 1 m. It shows higher water retention in the soil to high values of the Campbell parameter, matric potential and porosity; sensitivity to hydraulic conductivity depends on the relationship with the daily accumulated rainfall.

The HALO Trust was founded in 1988 to alleviate suffering among civilians living in hazardous areas. Today, it is the largest humanitarian de-mining charity in the world. Its earliest operations were in Afghanistan. Following the Soviet withdrawal, HALO moved into Kabul where it established a clinic for casualties of war, developed mine risk education and gradually rolled out an innovative mine clearance programme. These interventions helped to transform mine clearance from being a military legacy into a humanitarian priority. Much of the early strategic foresight for HALO extended from the military experience of the former Scottish foot soldier Colonel Colin Campbell Mitchell of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Based on semi-structured interviews with key participants and access to private papers and diaries, this article provides a narrative framework for understanding the emergence of humanitarian mine clearance or ‘mine action’, as it is now termed. Through sometimes fractious dialectical relationships with various United Nations agencies and discreet dealings with Afghanistan’s communist government and regional warlords, HALO became a vital implementing partner in the work of refugee resettlement and rehabilitation assistance. Retrieving its history contributes to a clearer identification of the intersections between military expertise, development, humanitarianism and the post-Cold War world.

Building thermal insulation and energy conservation have become urgent problems in the field of civil engineering because they are important for achieving the goal of carbon neutralization. Thermal conductivity is an important index for evaluating the thermal insulation of materials. To study the influence of different porosity levels on the thermal conductivity of materials, this paper established a random distribution model using MATLAB and conducted a comparative analysis using COMSOL finite element software and classical theoretical numerical calculation formulas. The thermal conductivity of composite materials was determined based on a theoretical calculation formula and COMSOL software simulations, and the theoretical calculation results and simulation results were compared with the measured thermal conductivity of the composites. Furthermore, the influence of the width of the gaps between the materials on the heat transfer process was simulated in the fabricated roof structure. The results showed the following: (1) The thermal conductivity values calculated using the Zimmerman model were quite different from those calculated using the Campbell-Allen model and those calculated using the COMSOL software; (2) The thermal conductivity values calculated using the theoretical calculation formula were lower than the measured data, and the maximum relative error was more than 29%. The COMSOL simulation results were in good agreement with the measured data, and the relative error was less than 5%; (3) When the gap width was less than 60 mm, it increased linearly with the heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient increased slowly when the gap width was greater than 60 mm. This was mainly due to the thermal bridge effect inside the insulation system. Based on these research results, a thermal insulation system was prepared in a factory.

Abstract When studying biographical narratives constituting “The Michael Jordan Myth,” certain patterns emerge. For example, it is possible to identify mythemes corresponding with Campbell’s concept of the hero’s journey monomyth. This study focuses on a particular pattern, which is a progression of addiction with its phases, axial points, and list of symptoms. One of the most frequently used epithets in regard to the hero of this particular myth is “competitive.” While this is a quality of numerous outstanding athletes, in Jordan’s case competitiveness appears as a dominant quality and a driving force throughout his entire career. The premise of my study is the assumption that Jordan’s competitive spirit is a symptom of behavioral addiction and winning/defeating rivals is the behavior of an addict. The goal of the study is to use Jordan’s biographies and, based on Jellinek’s model of addiction progression, to verify whether Jordan’s accomplishments on and off the court can be viewed as symptoms of unclassified behavioral addiction.

Streszczenie:
The predictive power of dividend yield on BIST stock prices is examined in this study, adopting the Campbell and Shiller (1988a) model. Thus, it will be tested whether the dividend yield is a successful factor in predicting stock prices. The study has important implications for theorists, investors, and policymakers. First of all, revealing the effect of dividends on firm value will be decisive in determining dividend policies for managers. Once the predictive power of dividend yield is demonstrated, investors and portfolio managers can use the present value approach to determine whether a particular stock is overvalued or undervalued. In addition, knowing the effects of dividend payouts on market dynamics will guide the policy decisions of regulatory authorities. Toda-Yamamoto (1995) and Hatemi-J (2012) bootstrap asymmetric causality tests were adopted as a research methodology. Dividend yield and monthly closing price series of stocks that show continuity in the BIST 100 index and pay dividends continuously throughout the December 2011 – November 2021 period are used in the research. To the Toda-Yamamoto causality test findings, causal relationships from dividend yield to stock prices were determined in AGHOL, BIMAS, EGEEN, INDES, SARKY, SELEC, and TOASO stocks. Hatemi-J's (2012) bootstrap asymmetric causality test indicates fewer causality relationships compared to the Toda-Yamamoto test. A causal relationship could not be determined between the positive or negative components of dividend yield and price variables in many stocks. In the background of the mixed findings of the predictive power of the dividend yield, the structural breaks in the variables examined, the predictive power of the dividend yield changing over time, the weakening of the predictive power depending on the market conditions, the nonlinear relationship between the dividend yield and the price, the stock-based tests are more disadvantageous than the index-based tests, the estimation power of the dividend yield increases more when the annual frequency observations are used rather than the monthly frequency observations, the changes in the dividend policy of the companies and the share repurchase decisions may be weakened the estimation power of the dividend yield.

We measured dihydropyridine receptor (DHPR) and ryanodine receptor (RYR) density in isolated ventricular myocytes from rabbits, rats, ferrets, and guinea pigs and also from rabbit ventricular homogenate, skeletal muscle homogenate, and isolated triads. In skeletal muscle homogenate and triads the RYR/DHPR ratio was 0.7 and 0.52, respectively. This stoichiometry is reasonably consistent with excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling models in skeletal muscle where the DHPR molecule itself may transmit the signal for Ca release to the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and with the molecular arrangement proposed for toadfish swimbladder from ultrastructural studies by B. A. Block, T. Imagawa, K. P. Campbell, and C. Franzini-Armstrong. (J. Cell Biol. 107: 2587-2600, 1988). That is, there could be approximately two RYR for each four DHPR or two RYR feet per DHPR tetrad in an organized array (assuming 1 high-affinity RYR/foot and 4 DHPR/tetrad). The fraction of rabbit ventricular protein that is cardiac myocyte protein was also estimated (< or = 55-62%), assuming that RYR and DHPR are useful but not exclusive markers for myocytes in the ventricle. In cardiac myocytes the RYR/DHPR was much higher than in skeletal muscle and varied among different mammalian myocytes. The RYR/DHPR ratios were 3.7 in rabbit, 4.3 in guinea pig, 7.3 in rat, and 10.2 in ferret myocytes. In contrast to skeletal muscle, these results indicate that there are many more RYR feet per DHPR in cardiac muscle, and this ratio depends on species (i.e., 4-10 times and would be 4 times higher still per putative DHPR tetrad if that structure exists in mammalian heart).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Uninjured cutaneous C-fiber nociceptors develop spontaneous activity and α-adrenergic sensitivity following L6 spinal nerve ligation in the monkey. J. Neurophysiol. 81: 455–466, 1999. We investigated whether uninjured cutaneous C-fiber nociceptors in primates develop abnormal responses after partial denervation of the skin. Partial denervation was induced by tightly ligating spinal nerve L6 that innervates the dorsum of the foot. Using an in vitro skin-nerve preparation, we recorded from uninjured single afferent nerve fibers in the superficial peroneal nerve. Recordings were made from 32 C-fiber nociceptors 2–3 wk after ligation and from 29 C-fiber nociceptors in control animals. Phenylephrine, a selective α1-adrenergic agonist, and UK14304 (UK), a selective α2-adrenergic agonist, were applied to the receptive field for 5 min in increasing concentrations from 0.1 to 100 μM. Nociceptors from in vitro control experiments were not significantly different from nociceptors recorded by us previously in in vivo experiments. In comparison to in vitro control animals, the afferents found in lesioned animals had 1) a significantly higher incidence of spontaneous activity, 2) a significantly higher incidence of response to phenylephrine, and 3) a higher incidence of response to UK. In lesioned animals, the peak response to phenylephrine was significantly greater than to UK, and the mechanical threshold of phenylephrine-sensitive afferents was significantly lower than for phenylephrine-insensitive afferents. Staining with protein gene product 9.5 revealed an ∼55% reduction in the number of unmyelinated terminals in the epidermis of the lesioned limb compared with the contralateral limb. Thus uninjured cutaneous C-fiber nociceptors that innervate skin partially denervated by ligation of a spinal nerve acquire two abnormal properties: spontaneous activity and α-adrenergic sensitivity. These abnormalities in nociceptor function may contribute to neuropathic pain.

Category: Bunion; Other Introduction/Purpose: In hallux valgus (HV), first metatarsal pronation is increasingly recognized as an important aspect of the deformity. Weightbearing CT (WBCT) scans have allowed investigators to quantify pronation of the first metatarsal. Yamaguchi et al. (J Orthop Sci 2015) proposed that pronation of the first metatarsal can be estimated by looking at the shape of the lateral aspect of the first metatarsal head on weightbearing AP radiographs of the foot, which would provide surgeons with a simple and readily available guide for evaluation of pronation. The purpose of this study was to compare pronation determined from the shape of the lateral head of the first metatarsal on AP weightbearing radiographs in HV patients with pronation calculated from WBCT scans. Methods: Patients were included in this study if they had preoperative (n=22 patients) or 5-month postoperative (n=22 patients) WBCT scans and corresponding weightbearing AP radiographs of the affected foot. Pronation on weightbearing AP radiographs was grouped into four groups 0–9°, 10–19°, 20–30°, and >30° as described by Wagner and Wagner (Foot Ankle Clin 2018) by two independent observers. Pronation of the first metatarsal on WBCT scans was measured using a technique developed by Campbell et al. (Foot Ankle Int 2018), which calculates pronation of the first metatarsal in reference to the second metatarsal using a 3D CAD model, and using the alpha angle as described by Kim et al. (Foot Ankle Int 2015) and was categorized into the same four groups described for the radiographs. Weighted kappa coefficients (k) were used to determine interobserver reliability and agreement between pronation groups on radiographs and WBCT scans. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to determine reliability of the alpha angle measurements on WBCT scans. After dividing patients into plain radiograph pronation groups, differences in mean WBCT pronation of the first metatarsal was compared using Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: Agreement between the two observers for preoperative and postoperative pronation on radiographs was moderate (k=.529,P<.001) and fair (k=.382,P=0.001), respectively. Intraclass correlation coefficients for preoperative and postoperative alpha angles were good (ICCs > 0.80, P<.001). Pronation of the first metatarsal on radiographs agreed with pronation on WBCT scans using a CAD method in 7 of 22 cases preoperatively (31.8%) and 8 of 22 cases postoperatively (36.4%). However, statistically, this was represented no agreement by more than chance between preoperative or postoperative pronation on WBCT scans and radiographs (k=.041, P=.774 and k=.059, P=.595, respectively) (Figures 1A-B). Similarly, pronation of the first metatarsal on radiographs did not agree with pronation on WBCT scans using the alpha angle measure either preoperatively or postoperatively (k=.070, P=.474 and k=.063, P=.364, respectively). Preoperatively, in the plain radiograph pronation groups of 10-19° (n=9), 20- 29° (n=11), and >30° (n=2), mean pronation calculated from WBCT scans using a 3D CAD method was 21.1°, 25.2°,and 20.9°, respectively (P=.752), and mean pronation calculated using the alpha angle was 13.2°, 15.8°, and 22.3°, respectively (P=.308). Postoperatively, in the plain radiograph pronation groups of 0-9° (n=9), 10-19° (n=6), and 20-29° (n=7), mean pronation calculated from WBCT scans using a 3D CAD method was 22.3°, 22.5°, and 21.0°, respectively (P=.976), and mean pronation calculated using the alpha angle was 3.1°, 5.7°, and 6.4°, respectively (P=.252). Conclusion:: Pronation of the first metatarsal measured on weightbearing AP radiographs using the lateral first metatarsal head had only fair to moderate interobserver agreement and did not statistically significantly agree with pronation measured on WBCT scans using either a 3D CAD model or the alpha angle. Additionally, mean pronation on WBCT scans did not significantly differ by any magnitude between the plain radiograph pronation groups, which indicates that there was no association between pronation measured on WBCT scans and plain radiographs. These results suggest that surgeons should use caution when trying to derive first metatarsal pronation from AP weightbearing radiographs for surgical planning purposes.

The article presents a post-humanist reading of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). At 40, the second adaptation of John Campbell’s Jr novella Who Goes There? (1938) has recently undergone a revival of critical interest. However, this interest has only elicited – to date – new iterations of the traditional paradigm of ideological readings of the film. This article attempts to read The Thing outside the paradigm of ideology and human(ist) subjectivity, as per the formulation of Louis Althusser (2014), as well as to critique such paradigm. First, the article offers an analysis of the ideological components at work in various traditional readings of the film. Then it scrutinizes ways in which these traditional readings can be overcome. This opens the possibility of a post-humanist interpretation of the film, an interpretation in which the Thing is not just a manifestation of otherness, but a material and effective realization of life seen from a non-humanist perspective. This reading arises after dispensing with the subject–object relationship enforced in Althusser’s ideological structures. Outside these structures, the article then ponders on the materiality of the Thing through Deleuze’s and Guattari’s concept of the Body without Organs (‘BwO’), which envisages the body as a material dimension for the flow of becoming, a dynamic force field free of fixed and normative pre-conceptions. Finally, the article explores the new sources of horror in the film, as well as the ethico-political implications this analysis brings to fore.
