Abstract It has been taken for granted that feeding guilds and behavior in animals are linked to the taxonomic relatedness of species, but empirical evidence supporting such relationship is virtually missing. To examine the importance of taxonomy on trophic ecology, I here present the first well-resolved dietary taxonomy analysis based on feeding guilds (predation, herbivory, and filtering) among families and genera within the fish order Perciformes. Taxonomic relatedness in feeding did not vary with ecosystem dimension (marine vs. freshwater). Although predation dominates among Perciformes fishes, this study shows that in most cases taxonomic units (family or genus) are composed by species with several feeding guilds. Related species are more similar in feeding compared with species that are taxonomically more distant, demonstrating that there is a greater variation of feeding guilds within families than genera. Thus, there is no consistency in feeding guilds between family- and genus-level taxonomy. This study provides empirical support for the notion that genera are more informative than families, underlining that family-level taxonomy should be avoided to infer feeding habits of fish species at finer taxonomic resolution. Thus, the choice of taxonomic resolution (family or genus level) in ecological studies is key to avoid information loss and misleading results. I conclude that high-rank taxonomic units (i.e., above the generic level) are not appropriate to test research hypotheses about the feeding of fish.

Freshwater fishes are key indicators for delineating biogeographical maps worldwide. However, controversy in regional-scale ichthyogeographic boundaries still persists, especially in areas of high species endemicity, such as in Greece. One problem concerns the taxonomy of the fishes because there have been extensive changes, mainly due to an increased splitting of species in recent years in Europe. Here, we explore why ichthyogeographic boundary disagreements and uncertainties in region-scale biogeographical units persist. We compare cluster analyses of river basin fish fauna in Greece using two taxonomic datasets: the older fish taxonomy (from 1991) and the current taxonomy that now follows the phylogenetic species concept (PSC), which has become widely established in Europe after 2007. Cluster analyses using the older fish taxonomy depicts only two major biogeographical regional divisions, while the current taxonomy defines four major regional divisions in mainland Greece. Interestingly, some older maps from the pre-PSC taxonomy era also similarly show four ichthyogeographic divisions in Greece and we can assume that the older biogeographical work did not solely use numerical taxonomy but followed an expert-guided synthesis; the older regional definitions have persisted quite well despite radical changes in Europe’s fish taxonomy. Through the prism of biodiversity conservation planning, we hope this review may help identify ways to help standardize policy-relevant biogeographical mapping.

Life science ontologies play an important role in Semantic Web. Given the diversity in fish species and the associated wealth of information, it is imperative to develop an ontology capable of linking and integrating this information in an automated fashion. As such, we introduce the Fish Ontology (FO), an automated classification architecture of existing fish taxa which provides taxonomic information on unknown fish based on metadata restrictions. It is designed to support knowledge discovery, provide semantic annotation of fish and fisheries resources, data integration, and information retrieval. Automated classification for unknown specimens is a unique feature that currently does not appear to exist in other known ontologies. Examples of automated classification for major groups of fish are demonstrated, showing the inferred information by introducing several restrictions at the species or specimen level. The current version of FO has 1,830 classes, includes widely used fisheries terminology, and models major aspects of fish taxonomy, grouping, and character. With more than 30,000 known fish species globally, the FO will be an indispensable tool for fish scientists and other interested users.

When first introduced, invasive species typically evade detection; DNA barcoding coupled with high-throughput sequencing (HTS) may be more sensitive and accurate than morphology-based taxonomy and thereby improve invasive (or rare) species detection. We quantified the relative error of species detection between morphology-based and HTS-based taxonomic identification of ichthyoplankton collections from the Port of Duluth, Minnesota, an aquatic non-native species introduction “hot-spot” in the Laurentian Great Lakes. We found HTS-based taxonomy identified 28 species and morphology-based taxonomy identified 30 species, of which 27 were common to both. Among samples, 76% of family-level taxonomic assignments agreed; however, only 42% of species assignments agreed. Most errors were attributed to morphology-based taxonomy, whereas HTS-based taxonomy error was low. For this study system, for most non-native fishes, the detection probability by randomized survey for larvae was similar to that by a survey that is optimized for non-native species early detection of juveniles and adults. We conclude that classifying taxonomic errors by comparing HTS results against morphology-based taxonomy is an important step toward incorporating HTS-based taxonomy into biodiversity surveys.

AbstractScanning electron microscopy (SEM) of scales in six species of the fish genus Channa revealed certain features relevant to taxonomic significance. The location of focus, inter-radial distance and width of circuli, inter-circular space, width of radii, shape and size of lepidonts, etc. were found to be different in different species. The importance of SEM of scales in poorly understood taxonomy and phylogeny of the fish genus Channa is discussed with the help of relevant literature. Further, the role of SEM of fish scales for taxonomic applications is discussed in detail.

The Rhabdoviridae is a large family of negative-sense (-) RNA viruses that includes important pathogens of ray-finned fish and marine mammals. As for all viruses, the taxonomic assignment of rhabdoviruses occurs through a process implemented by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). A recent revision of taxonomy conducted in conjunction with the ICTV Rhabdoviridae Study Group has resulted in the establishment of three new subfamilies (Alpharhabdovirinae, Betarhabdovirinae, and Gammarhabdovirinae) within the Rhabdoviridae, as well as three new genera (Cetarhavirus, Siniperhavirus, and Scophrhavirus) and seven new species for viruses infecting fish or marine mammals. All rhabdovirus species have also now been named or renamed to comply with the binomial format adopted by the ICTV in 2021, comprising the genus name followed by a species epithet. Phylogenetic analyses of L protein (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase) sequences of (-) RNA viruses indicate that members of the genus Novirhabdovirus (subfamily Gammarhabdovirinae) do not cluster within the Rhabdoviridae, suggesting the need for a review of their current classification.

This paper describes ethnosemantic system of fish classification in Kaera Language, a papuan language spoken in East Pantar, Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The aims of this study are to document vernacular names of fish in Kaera Language, to classify them using folk taxonomy proposed by Berlin (1992), and to describe the fish naming system in Kaera community. The data were collected by employing quasi-experimental method, resulting in 63 terms of fish in Kaera language. The data were then transcribed and classified based on their taxa in folk taxonomy (Berlin, 1992). The result of data analysis showed that fish in Kaera Language are classified into four levels of taxonomy hierarchy namely unique beginner, life form, generic and specific. While regarding folk nomenclature, Kaera community name the fish by their appearance, habitat, and imagination, reflecting their cultural perspective that is influenced by nature around them. AbstrakMakalah ini mendeskripsikan sistem pengklasifikasian ikan secara etnosemantik dalam bahasa Kaera, bahasa yang termasuk rumpun bahasa papua, dituturkan oleh masyarakat Pantar Timur, Kabupaten Alor, Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur. Tujuan penulisan makalah ini adalah untuk mendokumentasikan nama-nama ikan dalam bahasa Kaera, mengklasifikasikannya berdasarkan taksonomi daerah yang diusulkan oleh Berlin (1992), dan mendeskripsikan sistem penamaannya dalam masyarakat Kaera. Data dalam kajian ini dikumpulkan menggunakan metode kuasi-eksperimen, menghasilkan 63 istilah ikan dalam bahasa Kaera. Data yang terkumpul kemudian ditranskripsi dan diklasifikasikan berdasarkan taksa dalam taksonomi rakyat (Berlin, 1992). Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa ikan dalam bahasa Kaera diklasifikasikan ke dalam empat level hirarki taksonomi, yakni unique beginner, life form, generic, dan specific. Sementara itu, berkaitan dengan nomenklatur, masyarakat Kaera menamai ikan berdasarkan tampilan, habitat, dan imajinari, merefleksikan perspektif budaya masyarakat Kaera yang dipengaruhi oleh alam di sekitar mereka.

The use of photos and descriptions of fish otoliths is a useful tool for studies that include: systematics, taxonomy, identification of fish in the contents of stomachs and classification of the trophic chain. In this study. we characterized the morphology of the otoliths in nine species of fish, distributed in five families and two orders from the Verde River in the Upper Paraná Basin. An atlas was prepared depicting, by species, photography of the front and rear perspectives of each pair of sagittae otoliths. This visual atlas will help in later works that address ecology and, especially, in the distinction of species, thus contributing as an instrument to be applied to the taxonomic identification of species and fish populations.

This article investigates the folk taxonomy of four artisanal fisheries communities in Ilhabela/SP. The local folk taxonomy shows how these fishermen identify, name and classify fish resources in the environment exploited by them. Forty-two fishermen from four different local communities of Ilhabela were interviewed through a structured questionnaire and photographs of fish species with occurrence for the southeast region of Brazil. Respondents identified the 24 species listed as 50 generic names and 27 binominal specific names, mainly related to aspects of fish species morphology such as color, shape and size. These fish were classified into eight groups according to local criteria related to the morphology, ecology and fishing forms associated with the capture of species. The morphological aspect was identified as the most used feature by respondents to name and classify local fish, followed by ecological aspects such as behavior, diet and habitat. The comparison of local criteria used for the groups was similar to the scientific taxonomy criteria, showing a detailed local ecological knowledge by this group of fishers.

AbstractAnalysis of food webs is important for defining functional components of ecosystems, but dietary data are often difficult to obtain and coarsely characterised. We compared three methods of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum); Salmoniformes: Salmonidae) and prickly sculpin (Cottus asper Richardson; Scorpaeniformes: Cottidae) gut content analysis: traditional morphological taxonomy of prey items, genetic sequencing of individual prey items, and next-generation sequencing of homogenised gut contents. Prey analysis of invertebrates by morphological identification allowed order-level classifications and produced ecologically important count and mass data. Sequencing individual specimens provided greater taxonomic resolution, while next-generation sequencing of stomach contents revealed more prey diversity in the diets of both fish species as it was possible to detect prey that were degraded beyond visual recognition. Both fish species exhibited generalist feeding characteristics; however, terrestrial Insecta were a large diet component for rainbow trout. This study demonstrates an efficient approach for prey analysis using molecular techniques that complement traditional taxonomy.

An updated taxonomic list of marine fish larvae from the Gulf of California to Colima, Mexico is presented. A total of 579 taxa belonging to 119 families, 256 genera, and 423 species were recorded. The list was compiled using 14 publications on fish larvae research (1974-2012), and the fish larvae identified from 315 samples collected with Bongo nets during 10 oceanographic cruises made from the Gulf of California to Bahía de Banderas, Mexico, from 2003 to 2007 (this study). The most important families in this study were the Myctophidae (28.3%), Engraulidae (25.0%), and Clupeidae (15.4%). The most abundant species were Cetengraulis mysticetus (18.2%), Benthosema panamense (13.9%), and Opisthonema libertate (12.7%). The compiled taxonomic list shows the addition of 296 new taxa to the previous list published 10 years ago, and also the need of an increase in the effort on the taxonomy of fish larvae forms not identified to species level.

We used a multi-locus phylogenetic approach (i.e., combining both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA fragments) to address some long-standing taxonomic inconsistencies within the diverse fish clade of Combtooth Blennies (Blenniidae—unranked clade Almadablennius). The obtained phylogenetic trees revealed some major inconsistencies in the current taxonomy of Parablennini, such as the paraphyletic status of the Salaria and Parablennius genera, casting some doubt regarding their actual phylogenetic relationship. Furthermore, a scarce-to-absent genetic differentiation was observed among the three species belonging to the genus Chasmodes. This study provides an updated taxonomy and phylogeny of the former genus Salaria, ascribing some species to the new genus Salariopsis gen. nov., and emphasizes the need for a revision of the genus Parablennius.

AbstractAcanthocephalans are obligate parasites of vertebrates, mostly of fish. There is limited knowledge about the diversity of fish-parasitizing Acanthocephala in Austria. Seven determined species and an undetermined species are recorded for Austrian waters. Morphological identification of acanthocephalans remains challenging due to their sparse morphological characters and their high intraspecific variations. DNA barcoding is an effective tool for taxonomic assignment at the species level. In this study, we provide new DNA barcoding data for three genera of Acanthocephala (Pomphorhynchus Monticelli, 1905, Echinorhynchus Zoega in Müller, 1776 and Acanthocephalus Koelreuter, 1771) obtained from different fish species in Austria and provide an important contribution to acanthocephalan taxonomy and distribution in Austrian fish. Nevertheless, the taxonomic assignment of one species must remain open. We found indications for cryptic species within Echinorhynchus cinctulus Porta, 1905. Our study underlines the difficulties in processing reliable DNA barcodes and highlights the importance of the establishment of such DNA barcodes to overcome these. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to collect and compare material across Europe allowing a comprehensive revision of the phylum in Europe.

This study evaluates the role of protozoa in larval fish feeding by describing protozoa in larval fish diets and testing the hypothesis that, in the Irish Sea, larval fish feed on protozoan prey at rates that potentially sustain their food requirements. Gut contents of 11 taxonomic groups of larval fish were examined, and protist prey occurred in the diet of all of them. Protozoan prey were identified, which provided an insight into their trophic role. Most of the protozoan prey were autotrophic or mixotrophic. In general, larval fish diets were constant over the spring/summer period, regardless of prey availability in the field and the composition of larval fish assemblage (taxonomy and size). A laboratory experiment on ingestion rates of flounder larvae as a function of ciliates concentration was conducted. Combined laboratory and field data showed that, in the Irish Sea, it is unlikely that ciliates are often the primary food source of flounder larvae, and, by implication, other larval fish as well. However, ciliates and other protozoa could be a substantial component of the larval fish diet, and they may potentially prevent food limitation.

Speakers of a Central-Malayo-Polynesian language, the Nage inhabit the central region of the eastern Indonesian island of Flores. Their folk taxonomy of animals (ana wa) contains three named life-form taxa, one of which is ika, fish. A review of component folk-generic taxa, however, reveals that Nage do not classify five kinds of freshwater fish as ‘fish’ (ika), even though they further apply ika to various marine fish (including sharks and rays) as well as to marine mammals. The article considers this peculiarity of Nage folk zoological taxonomy, and how it might affect an understanding of ika as denoting a ‘fish’ life-form taxon. The main conclusion is that the five excluded categories—distinguished largely on morphological and behavioural grounds, and conveniently designated as the ‘tebhu cluster’, after one of their members—are contrasted primarily with freshwater species which Nage do classify as ‘fish’ (ika). Specified by name as ika lowo (‘river fish’), these are further contrasted with another named folk-intermediate taxon of ‘marine fish’ (ika mesi). From this, it is argued that, as a life-form category, ika should be understood as implicitly including the five members of the ‘tebhu cluster’ as a third, albeit covert, folk-intermediate taxon.

Aim: In this study we characterized the fish Cynoglossus lingua collected from Chandipur Coast of Odisha using the mtDNA markers cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and cytochrome b (Cyt-b) genes. Methodology: Samples of flat fish were collected from Balaramgadi fish landing center, Chandipur sea beach, Odisha coast. The collected specimens were initially identified based on the morphology using standard taxonomic keys. Molecular characterization was accomplished through PCR amplification of COI and Cyt-b genes. The sequences were subjected to BLAST analysis and aligned using Clustal W for homology mapping. Phylogenetic status was inferred by the neighbor-joining method using MEGA v7.0. Results: The taxonomic keys and the COI and Cyt-b gene sequences identified the specimens as C. lingua. The COI and Cyt-b gene sequences showed 98% and 99% sequence similarity with C. lingua isolate FMU.CIFRI.FF-7 COI gene (GenBank accession: MN889532.1) and the C. lingua isolate FM.CIFRI.CYTB.FF-7 Cyt-b gene (GenBank accession MT362541.1), respectively. Interpretation: The study supports the reliability of combining classical taxonomic approaches with molecular analysis using COI and Cyt-b genes for the identification of C. lingua. Abstract The present article presents the results of a recent independent fishery survey conducted in the northern Arabian Sea off the coast of Pakistan in 2016–2018. The survey confirmed the underreported occurrence of six fish species that are now included in the ichthyofauna diversity of Pakistan: Ambassis natalensis, Pomadasys striatus, Narcine oculifera, Paramonacanthus choirocephalus, Paramonacanthus tricuspis, Chromis westaustralis. The fishes were collected with demersal trawls operated at the depth of 165 m (90 fathoms), and the taxonomy, habitat, and distribution range of each of the species were carefully examined and verified with information available in Eschmyer’s fish catalog, Fishbase, WoRMS, and FAO. It is necessary to update the marine ichthyofauna record of Pakistan with the detailed taxonomic descriptions of each species and their distribution ranges.

Mudskipper is amphibious fish that inhabited sandy beaches, mudflat, and mangrove areas. This fish is euryhaline because of its tolerance to varying salinity, pH, temperature, conductivity, and DO. This study aimed to identify the taxonomy status of mudskipper in Banua Pangka Mangrove Ecotourism, Seta-Seta Beach, and Masiae river, it was expected to be additional information used as a basis for management, benefaction in taxonomic, and ecological aspects. The sampling method was purposive sampling. Morphological identification was carried out by observing morphometric and meristic character. The result found two mudskipper species from three sampling sites, namely Periophthalmus argentilineatus and Periophthalmodon freycineti. Free listing was used to obtain names of marine animals from 234 Peruvian children with families involved in fishing activities. They live in the fishing towns of Vila-vila, Morro Sama and Ilo, located in Southern Peru. Fishes, birds and the category “other marine animal” were used for the classification of marine fauna by children. The group of 6-8 year-olds shows a mean frequency of 19.7 names per child, while the group of 9-11 year-olds shows a mean frequency of 25.7 names per child. Folk species of fish is the most frequently recorded category with a predominance of coastal species and with a mean frequency of 7.56 and 11.51 names per child for the groups of 6-8 year-olds and 9-11 year-olds, respectively. In contrast, bird names are less frequently recorded in the lists. Some bird and mollusc names have lexical under-differentiation at a generic level and apparently have lower cultural significance than fish. Children’s classification in different levels of organization is evidence of a folk biology. The folk taxonomy of marine animals could be influenced by the lesser cognitive development of younger children and the ecological salience of some species. Some species with coastal habitat exhibit a high dominance index of folk names. Cultural transmission of knowledge about birds could be failing due to the recent occupancy of the study sites by migratory people and the sexual division of work in the children’s families.

Fish herpesviruses can cause significant economic losses in aquaculture, and some of these viruses are oncogenic. The virion morphology and genome organization of fish herpesviruses are generally similar to those of higher vertebrates, but the phylogenetic connections between herpesvirus families are tenuous. In accordance with new taxonomy, fish herpesviruses belong to the family Alloherpesviridae in the order Herpesvirales. Fish herpesviruses can induce diseases ranging from mild, inapparent infections to serious ones that cause mass mortality. The aim of this work was to summarize the present knowledge about fish herpesvirus diseases.

The Dumai City Fish Landing Base (FLB) is functioned to land fish both from within and from outside the City of Dumai to meet local consumption and for export purposes, however the various types of fish caught have not been properly identified. This study aims to identify and identify the types of fish caught by fishermen who are landed at the Fish Landing Base in Dumai City. The method used in this research was a survey. The fish species obtained were identified morphologically based on similarities in characteristics with the Taxonomy and Fish Identification Key books. The results showed that there were 14 types of fish from 14 families. all identified fish are neither protected nor endangered animals.

Introduction: Anisakidosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked fish or crustaceans parasitized by nematode larvae of the Anisakidae family. In this study, the presence of anisakid larvae was identified in fish species of consumer of the Pacific coast in Ecuador and Colombia.Methods: We obtained 438 samples grouped into twenty species of fish caught in the fishing ports of Manta, Santa Rosa, Buenaventura and Tumaco. The morphological identification of the larvae was made by taxonomy and the percentage of infection, were calculated. For the identification of species, a multiplex PCR was carried.Results: The taxonomic review identified eight species of fish as hosts of the genders Anisakis andPseudoterranova. The larvae were isolated mainly from the intestine with a percentage of infection between 18 and 100%. The percentage of infection and identification of anisakids in these fish will aid in the prevention and control of anisakiasis as a possible emerging disease for this area of the Pacific. With the multiplex PCR, A. pegreffii, A. physeteris, and P. decipiens were identified.Conclusion: The identification of these species is reported for the first time in this geographical area, providing the basis for future research into the Anisakidae family.

Aquatic creatures such as pikes, salmon and whales feature prominently in the poetry, fiction and painting of the Modernist period. It should therefore come as no surprise that water-dwelling animals, and fish especially, were fascinating to Virginia Woolf too. Woolf’s interest in fish (among other animals) can be accounted for by the profound changes in human-animal relations that mark the period of Modernism, and which were brought about by the unyielding influence of taxonomy and Darwin’s theory of evolution, but also new developments in ethology and ecology that appeared in early 20th century. This article addresses the significance of fish as both zoometaphor and individual subject in the fiction and non-fiction of Virginia Woolf. First, I comment on the significance of fishes in connection to Modernist ideas on beauty. Then, I analyze fishing allegories and fish-related motifs in the context of Woolf’s own (feminist) poetics. In the last part of the article I analyze the posthuman potential of animal consciousness that could be regarded as superior to the human one.

This paper describes the Photafish System, an innovative technique for capturing high-quality digital images of live freshwater fishes and other aquatic organisms in the field. This system may improve and facilitate the visual documentation of such organisms to illustrate guidebooks, populate online databases and support scientific papers, particularly taxonomic ones. The system was designed and tested to produce Taxonomically Informative Photos (TIPs) of living specimens and employs an Aquarium Assembly for Photography (AAP) distinguished by its portability and low cost. Using Neotropical freshwater fishes as a model, we propose an optimized protocol for documenting the morphology of live specimens to support taxonomy, as well as awareness and conservation of freshwater biodiversity. This paper addresses the technical aspects and challenges of field studio photography in remote locations. Tricks gleaned from personal experiences with nature photography are also shared. Finally, we briefly discuss the advantages and weaknesses of our approach.

Correct identification is at the core of taxonomy. Although morphometric characterization is the most straightforward and cost-effective method, it has a number of limitations. By overcoming this limitation, bar coding of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase gene (COI) helps in accurate and cost-effective identification of fish species. This communication discusses limitations of conventional morphometry and how its integration with bar coding can help to solve the taxonomic ambiguity of morphologically similar species. Along with that information, different water bodies from J&K region have been analysed with special reference to fish diversity which revealed that the diversity is more in Jammu region as compared to Kashmir, due to favourable climatic conditions and larger number of lotic water bodies and also the fact that the integrated approach has been successfully adopted in Kashmir valley,contributing to accurate identification of fish fauna. There is a lot of room for research in this area as bar coding of fishes has just become popular in the Jammu region, despite its immaturity. This will aid in a better knowledge of the region's fish ecology, the preservation of the gene pool, and the rise of economically significant species.

Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage from the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, were described and evaluated according to trophic (guilds), spatial (habitats) and phylogenetic (taxonomic distances) structures. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Research Project (LTER-CNPq/UEM/NUPELIA) in August and October 2001. Thirty-five species were analyzed from thirty-one morphological variables. Strong significant correlations (Mantel test) between morphology and trophic guilds and between morphology and taxonomy were found, while morphology and habitat revealed a weak correlation. However, the partial Mantel test showed that the correlations between morphology and trophic guilds persist even when the effect of taxonomy is discounted. The ecomorphological pattern shown by the Principal Component Analysis separated species according to locomotion structures used in feeding. At one extreme there are the piscivores and insectivores that exploit lentic habitats and have compressed bodies and well developed anal fins, while at the other there are detritivores and invertivores that exploit lotic and semi-lotic habitats and have depressed bodies and well developed pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins. Canonical Discriminant Analysis using ecomorphological variables successfully predicted 94.5% of the trophic guild ecomorphotypes, but only 57.1% of the habitat ecomorphotypes. These data indicate that the fish assemblage of the upper Paraná River floodplain is structured ecomorphologically mainly according to trophic structure rather than habitat.

Abstract Accurate reorganization of harvested species is essential for appropriate fisheries monitoring but often unnoticed. In this study, an attempt was made to provide an accurate species description based on fish taxonomy and otolith shape parameters of nine sea catfishes living in Pakistan. The lapillus, the largest otolith of catfishes, includes the position of the umbo, the structure of the anterior mesial projection (amp), the incisura linea basalis (ilb) and sulcus lapilli marks (slm) in nine ariid catfishes were evaluated. Discriminant function analysis was performed using twenty-two morphometric parameters showed significant variations between the length of the maxillary barbel, adipose length and preorbital length, which were highlighted as basic discriminating characters. Species without barbells, such as Batrachocephalus mino and Osteogeneiosus militaris, were found to be distant. The taxonomic characters of the genera Netuma and Plicofollis overlapped due to a short adipose fin length. Nevertheless, species Arius arius, Sciades sona and Nemapterxy caelatus differed in a moderate adipose fin length. The preorbital length of Netuma bilineata has a short and rounded snout, while N. thalassina has a long and pointed snout, which is a distinguishing characteristic of both species. The coincident use of fish taxonomy and otolith shape parameters is an effective tool for catfish identification could be helpful in appropriate fisheries sampling programs and management in Pakistan whenever implemented.

AbstractAlthough many studies on the taxonomy of digenean trematodes of marine fishes have been completed in the Eastern Indo-Pacific (EIP) marine ecoregion, only a few have considered metacercarial stages. Here, the results are presented of a taxonomic survey of the digenean metacercariae of fishes from Palmyra Atoll, a remote and relatively pristine US National Wildlife Refuge located 1680 km SSW of Hawaii. Up to 425 individual fish were collected, comprising 42 fish species, from the sand flats bordering the lagoon of the atoll. Quantitative parasitological examinations of each fish were performed. Morphological descriptions of the encountered digenean metacercariae are provided, together with their prevalence, mean intensities, host and tissue-use. Up to 33,964 individuals were recovered representing 19 digenean metacercaria species from eight families. The species composition of digeneans in lagoon fishes at Palmyra Atoll is a subset of what has previously been reported for the EIP. Further, the large diversity and abundance of metacercariae reported in this study highlight the utility of including this group in future ecological research in the EIP marine ecoregion.

The present study investigated ecomorphological patterns of fish assemblage from freshwater ponds on two functional categories, i.e., foraging behavior and habitat preference. Nine ecomorphological indices were derived from eight morphometric variables and examined on 566 adult individuals belonging to 9 species, 7 families and 4 orders. Samples were collected during April 2016 to September 2017 from freshwater ponds in Birbhum, West Bengal. Mantel test was performed to investigate correlation between morphological, taxonomic, trophic and habitat guild matrices. The partial Mantel test was done to investigate the direct correlation between trophic and habitat guilds with morphology discounting the effect of taxonomic relatedness on species assemblage. The interspecific ecomorphological diversification pattern was analysed by HCPC method. At least three ecomorphological assemblages among these fish species with two significant principal axes of variations were observed. Ecomorphological attributes associated with mouth aspect ratio, compression index and relative body height were on PC1 axis, and relative length and height of head, relative area of eye were on PC 2 axis. Mantel and partial Mantel test showed significant correlation between morphology and trophic guild structure. Amphibian parasites of the Order Dermocystida (Ichthyosporea) are widespread pathogens known mainly from Europe and North America, which cause primarily a disease of skin and subcutaneous tissue in their hosts. The taxonomy of these organisms has been problematic given their conserved morphology, similar clinical disease and pathology. Currently recognized taxa belong to the three closely related genera, Amphibiocystidium, Amphibiothecum, and Rhinosporidium, whereas species of Dermocystidium and Sphaerothecum destruens include fish parasites. Here, we review the taxonomy of Dermocystida based on a molecular phylogenetic analysis, principally of amphibian parasites, including DNA sequences obtained from amphibian hosts collected in the central-eastern region of South America. A new taxonomic arrangement is proposed, which includes the designation of type material for Dermocystidium pusula, synonymization of Amphibiothecum with Dermocystidium, and the restriction of Amphibiocystidium to its type species A. ranae. We also review the taxonomic status of Dermosporidium hylarum until the present work included in the synonymy of the human and animal pathogen R. seeberi, and considered herein as a valid taxon, however. In addition, a new species of Sphaerothecum parasitic to amphibians is described, being the first record of this genus in the southern hemisphere and in an amphibian host.

AbstractWe analysed cytochrome oxidase I (COI) barcodes for 35 putative fish species collected in the Scotia Sea, and compared the resultant molecular data with field-based morphological identifications, and additional sequence data obtained from GenBank and the Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD). There was high congruence between morphological and molecular classification, and COI provided effective species-level discrimination for nearly all putative species. No effect of geographic sampling was observed for COI sequence variation. For two families, including the Liparidae and Zoarcidae, for which morphological field identification was unable to resolve taxonomy, DNA barcoding revealed significant species-level divergence. However, the dataset lacked sufficient sensitivity for resolving species within theBathydracoandArtedidracogenera. Analysis of cytochromebfor these two genera also failed to resolve taxonomic identity. The data are discussed in relation to emergent priorities for additional taxonomic studies. We emphasize the utility of DNA barcoding in providing a valuable taxonomic framework for fundamental population studies through assigning life history stages or other morphologically ambiguous samples to parental species.

Specimens of Pseudoglaridacris confusus (Hunter, 1929) nom. nov. (Caryophyllidae) first described as Glaridacris confusus Hunter, 1929 and subsequently designated as Pseudoglaridacris confusa Oros, Uhrovič, Scholz, 2018 were collected and examined from 3 species of buffalofish, Ictiobus cyprinellus (Valenciennes), I. bubalus (Raf.), and I. niger (Raf.) in 2 Arizona lakes, Roosevelt and Apache lakes, on the Salt River, Arizona. We update our first and only 1969 redescription of this Arizona population, with new observations and measurements, compare with those in the original description, and assess the status of P. confusus in light of the recent taxonomic treatments of this species. The morphology of P. confusus is revisited using light microscopy revealing new features. Emphasis is placed on the morphological variability of its scolex. The re-examination of over 50 specimens from the Apache and Roosevelt lakes provided an opportunity to revise the taxonomy of the species and correct and update some old statements and concepts by other observers.

Heterosigma akashiwo is a golden-brown unicellular phytoflagellate with a high potential to create harmful algal blooms (HABs) and kill fish in many coastal regions worldwide, resulting in significant economic losses. Climate change and global warming have been introduced as triggers that impact the frequency and severity of H. akashiwo and other bloom-forming species in the past decades. In this review paper, the author tried to briefly discuss the morphology and taxonomy of H. akashiwo and show how environmental parameters can influence the physiology and toxicity of this species. Although the toxin production and mechanisms are still a conundrum, the proposed fish-killing mechanisms will be reviewed in the next step.

A total of 48 species of fish fauna were identified during the present study period. The dominant species of fish were found under order Perciformes in all study areas. The most species composition (40) was recorded in Setse fish landing area. The commercially important fish species were mostly found in Kyaikkhami area. Moreover, 17 species of fish were exported to other regions and foreign countries. Among the fish species, species such as Threadfin (Polynemidae), Croaker (Sciaenidae), Hilsa (Clupeidae), Bombay duck (Harpadontidae), Anchovy (Engraulidae), and Pomfret fish (Stomateidae) were the most economically important species. Bombay duck and Anchovy (especially Coilia dussumieri) were more abundant (70%) at the present study sites. Harpodon nehereus and Coilia species were the leading food employed as fresh and dried for local people in the present study areas. The Speckled Dace, Rhinichthys osculus (Girard), is a small species of fish (Cypriniformes, Leuciscidae) that has the widest geographic range of any freshwater dispersing fish in western North America. The dynamic geologic history of the region has produced many isolated watersheds with endemic fish species. However, Speckled Dace from these watersheds cannot be differentiated readily by morphometrics and meristics. This has led to the widely accepted hypothesis that the dace’s adaptability and ability to cross geologic barriers has resulted in interbreeding among neighboring populations, maintaining the dace as a single species. We investigate this hypothesis by looking at Speckled Dace populations in California which are the result of at least three separate colonization events of isolated watersheds. We synthesize results from taxonomic, genetic, and zoogeographic studies in combination with the findings of a recent genomics study, to show that there are distinctive evolutionary lineages within the Speckled Dace complex. These lineages are used to designate multiple species and subspecies. We back up these designations by examining how well these lineages fit with the geologic history of the isolated basins they inhabit and with the presence of other endemic fishes. We conclude the following nine taxa can be recognized within the Speckled Dace complex in California.
