Clean and hygienic fish landings to meet sanitation requirements and guarantee the quality of the fish caught are an important part of the role of the fishing ports. However, it has not been done much at Bungus PPS, which was marked by the handling of fish quality that was not standardized, some unloading equipment and transportation facilities were rarely cleaned, and the environmental quality at the fish landing dock was not maintained. The study aimed to evaluate the quality control level of tuna fish, the performance of fish landing sanitation, and estimate the potential losses from neglected fish landing sanitation. The study used the scoring system, p control chart analysis, regression method, and profit/loss analysis. Organoleptically, the quality of tuna landed on Bungus PPS was at 7.50‒7.77 (fresh enough to fresh). The quality of tuna was still under control, with the value of upper control limit (UCL) = 0.220, central line (CL) = 0.07 and lower control limit (LCL) = 0.000. The sanitation performance of fish landings on PPS Bungus was around 3,45 (scale 1-5). Sanitation of fish handling (x) significantly affects the quality of tuna caught (y), which was indicated by the equation y = 0,1308x + 7,175. The sanitation conditions explained that 84.4% of the tuna caught were maintained. Potential losses from neglected landing sanitation were (a) the loss of the best-selling price of tuna and (b) the cost of nutrition consultation and disease management due to damage to the nutritional content of tuna. The study was conducted to analyze the fish landings from Iraqi artisanal marine fisheries, northwest Arabian Gulf from January 2017 to December 2019. The monthly data of fish landings were collected from the main landing site at Al-Fao port, south Iraq and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. A total of 35 taxa in 18 families were identified in the artisanal catches, in addition to two species of shrimps. The highest total landings were 11,944 t in 2018 and 11,305 t in 2019. The annual total landing of the marine fisheries increased by 270% during 2017-2019 as compared with the annual landing during 2008-2016. Threadfin bream contributed 14.1%, followed by river shad (11.1%) and mullets (11.1%), whereas shrimps formed 15.2% to the total catch. The overall values of biomass diversity of fish ranged from 1.82 in 2017 to 2.85 in 2018. There were 320 registered fishing boats motorized by 65 to 950 hp. Multi gears fishing were observed. The trends of the landings of all fish groups were increased substantially, except river shad, threadfin bream and shrimps. The study suggests some of the management measures must be put into place, especially for the river shad in the regions of their migration reproductive and the nursery.

The current study was designed to evaluate the landing and distribution pathways of fish in DhiQar during the period from 2005 to 2016. This investigation was carried out to overview the location of the fish landing/entering centers, the source of supply and availability of fisheries organisms in DhiQar Province. Gill net, seine net, cast net and electro-fishing gears were used mainly for catching the freshwater fish. The total fish landing in the province during the above mentioned period was about 37427 tons. The maximum landed was about 4245 tons during 2016 which accounted for about 11% of the total catch. Out of thirteen freshwater fish species, 3 were marine fish species, the total landed fish was dominated by the less economically fish such as Palaniza abu which accounted for about 44 % of the total catch. Alternatively, the highly economically fish were landed in a less amount throughout the time studied. Seven native fish species were recorded during the study which made up of 67 % of the total catch. The alien species were 3 and made about 21 % of the total fish landed. Migratory species were occurred at the lowest level and formed about 12 % of the total catch. It could be concluded that most quantities of fish landings in the fish markets has always come from the captured fisheries, the rest were coming from aquaculture production.

Abstract Malaysia has a booming and successful fishery development. Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia Complexes (LKIM) are located in every state of Malaysia to function as a fish landing jetty complex to allow fishing vessels for fish handling operations. However, the design and facility of Fish Landing Jetty Complexes in Malaysia are not up to date even though the fishery development contribute to Malaysia’s economy. Proper facilities and design strategies of fish landing jetty will ensure that fish handling operations work efficiently and enhance the fishery development in Malaysia. In this research, the design components and facilities of fish landing jetty complexes are studied for determining the design strategies of fish landing jetty complexes in Malaysia to enhance the efficiency of the building itself. In this research, a few precedent study and survey questionnaire had been conducted as a research methodology to review and compare the design components and facility of the precedent studies. Besides, the survey questionnaire is to collect the data and their opinion from the general public and users of the Fish Landing Jetty Complex to understand their satisfaction and expectation towards the current condition of the Fish Landing Jetty Complex in Malaysia. There are 41% of respondents are stated that majority of the Fish Landing Jetty Complexes in Malaysia are unsuccessful in achieving the efficiency of the fish landing process. The design strategies of Fish Landing Jetty Complex should consider on the working flow diagram of fish landing. Application of mechanical quay-side lifting winches, built-in conveyor system, rainwater harvesting system and solar energy able to increase the efficiency of the building. It is important to apply the commercial and public recreation spaces inside a Fish Landing Jetty Complex to sustain longer and produce revenue to the building.

Determination of fish landing price is important, as the same contributes to the structure, conduct and performance of the fish market in Lake Victoria. Determination of relevant landing price is a gap to console between fishermen, agents (middlemen), processors and the government. The main objective of this study was therefore to examine fish price determination. Specifically, to examine the methods for fish price determination and analyse factors that affect fish landing price in Lake Victoria, a cross-sectional design was employed, and 300 respondents were randomly selected from two district councils, namely, Sengerema and Buchosa. Both qualitative and quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis. Findings show that landing price is determined through formal negotiation with processors, consultation with other traders, informal negotiation with buyers and Beach Management Unit (BMU). The study concluded that these are the common methods used to determine landing prices. Also, distance from fishing to onshore landing centres, market information channels, age and experiences of the fishermen are the factors significantly found affecting landing price. It is recommended that the mechanism for setting up fishery price, fish market structure, fishery information and the formation of fishery regulatory body needs fishery policy and sector reforms that mark the determination of fish landing price.

The average depth of water in haor associated rivers and inundated lands during monsoon period varied from 4.87±0.99 to 15.2±6.71 and 2.6±0.55 to 6.2±2.68 feet respectively. Fifty different types of fish species were landed in the selected 10 landing centers, where both cultured fish and captured fish were present. Fishes under the Cyprinidae family included 9 species, viz. Labeo rohita. Gebelion catla, Cirrhinus cirrhosus, Labeo calbasu, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Labeo gonius covered a maximum of 12450.61±468.32 MT. The second largest landed fish under the family Schilbeidae included 4 species Silonia silondia, Mystus armatus, Mystus cavasius Pseudeutropius atherinoides. Other fish species landed were identified as: 4 species under the family Mastacembelidae, 2 species under Siluridae, 3 species under Clupidae, 1 species under Ambassidae, 2 species under Palaemonidae, 3 species under Channidae, 1 species under Gobidae, 2 species under Bagridae and 1 species from each of the family Heteropneustidae, Pangasiidae, Clariidae, Ailiidae, Botiidae, Nandidae, Cichlidae, Anabantidae, Osphronemidae, Ambassidae, Notopteridae, Notopteridae,Belonidae and Gobiidae. Highest number 14 species landed were under catfish category, followed by 9 species of major carp. The captured total fish landed in 10 landing centers in 12 month period accounted 12,574±1029.64 MT, but the cumulative total landed fish, including pond fish, was 15,795±1666061.93 MT, as calculated by 45 Aratdars of 10 landing centers. About 88.35% fishermen sold the captured fish at local arat, but the rest (11.65%) were sold to large traders (paiker), retailers and consumers. A 56.6% of the fishermen cleaned the captured fish by river water, while 43.4% fishermen did not use water for washing fish before selling. After harvest, 45.62% fishers used clean utensils for carrying fish to arat and 54.38% used uncleaned utensils. Average harvest per fishermen per day was 23.9 kg, of which 22.26 kg was sold in the market and 1.64 kg was used for own family consumption. Out of total fish landed, a 45.2% was transported by fish hold of the country boat, 21.9% by bamboo basket and 14.8% by plastic crate. Relatively small quantity of fish was transported by insulated ice box (4.7%), aluminum container (2.7%) and gunny bag (3.2%). A 32.6% fisherman used ice and 67.4 % fishermen did not use ice after harvesting of fish. During fishing season, fish and ice ratio used by the transporters was 2.62:1. Abstract The Amazon Basin is the largest in the world and for many of its inhabitants fishing is a crucially important source of food and income. However, the benefits derived from mostly informal, part time, seasonal, and subsistence-based activities such as fishing are largely invisible to policy-makers, and addressing the threats to aquatic habitats, ecosystem functioning, and fisheries is frequently given low priority in national development agendas. To estimate the total extraction of fish in the Amazon Basin, we reviewed various publications and databases with quantitative data related to the landings, trade, and consumption of fish. We estimated the total landings to be between 422,000 and 473,000 t yr-1 in live weight, near to previous estimates. Almost 75%, however, represented landings in the Brazilian part of the basin, and there is a very large margin of uncertainty given that, among other issues, there are no recent official statistics on commercial landings. Conversely, landings in Bolivia, Colombia, and Ecuador seem to be considerably higher than previously thought. In all Amazonian countries, from 50% up to almost 100% of the fishing takes place for personal consumption, implying that it is not recorded in official landing statistics. Available time series data indicate that fish consumption in Brazil, as well as commercial fish landings in Peru and Colombia, have declined in recent years. Local case studies, national household consumption and expenditure surveys (HCES), and market surveys, all have their benefits and drawbacks. Some minor modifications of HCES procedures could considerably improve their usefulness for estimating fish landings in the Amazon Basin. To improve such estimates, we propose that local case studies be used to calibrate HCES data, thus combining the high precision of local case studies with the wide coverage and representativity of HCES data

Abstract Improved fisheries management provides fishers with more opportunities to maximize harvest value by accounting for valuable attributes of the harvest such as species, harvest timing, fish size, product form, and landing location. Harvest values can also vary by vessel and gear type. Moreover, the extent of targeting can influence the ecosystem in which the fishers operate and provide important management challenges. We utilize a unique dataset containing daily vessel-level fish landings in one region of Norway in 2010 to investigate the value of an array of attributes, including species, product form, product condition, timing, fish size, vessel type, gear type, and landing location for cod and other whitefish species, as well as king crab. We also investigate to what extent landed value differs across different communities, firms, and plants. The results indicate substantial variation for all attributes, highlighting opportunities for fishers as well as potential management challenges. For whitefish, the species landed accounts for three-quarters of the variation in prices. For cod in particular, the fish size accounts for nearly all variation in prices. In these fisheries, market conditions justify management focus on the biological composition of the catch.

Efficiency is important in landing with the aim that the catch as soon as possible reaches the hands of consumers in good quality condition. Sondong fishing gear is a type of active fishing gear with an application process that is not too long so it is useful for maintaining the quality of shrimp because shrimp have organoleptic properties that rot quickly. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency level of landing time of catches using sondong fishing gear at the Fish Landing Base, Dumai City, Riau Province. The research was carried out at the Fish Landing Base, Dumai City, Riau Province, from June 5-25, 2021. The material in the research object was a sondong fishing boat, while the equipment needed was stationery, a stopwatch, a camera, and a laptop. The data collected are basic data, namely unloading time, effective time, wasted time, and supporting data, namely fleet size (GT), number of fish landed (kg), number of unloading personnel (people), and age of activity actors (years). The efficiency of the landing time of the catch using sondong fishing gear at the fish landing base in the city of Dumai is classified into the less efficient category, while the factors that influence fishing productivity are fishing experience, crew, and fishing time.

Abstract Background Seafood contamination with Salmonella enterica is not only a public health concern, but can also lead to economic losses due to import rejections. Continuous monitoring of seafood for Salmonella is necessary for risk assessment and to establish suitable control measures. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the extent of Salmonella contamination of seafood in fish landing centers and retails markets. Methods In this study, we analyzed seafood samples from three fish landing centers and seven retail markets of Mumbai, India for S. enterica contamination. Salmonella was isolated using multiple selective enrichment broths and selective agars, and identified by conventional biochemical tests followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results Of 82 samples of seafood, comprising both finfish and shellfish, Salmonella was detected in 17 (20.7%) finfish samples. None of the shellfish samples (shrimps, clams, and cephalopods) were found to be contaminated with Salmonella. Samples from both landing centers and fish markets, as well as from pelagic and demersal sources, harbored Salmonella. Source-wise analysis showed that 11 of 57 (19.3%) samples from retail fish markets and 6 of 25 (24%) samples from fish landing centers were contaminated with Salmonella. Conclusions The study emphasizes the need to implement measures to prevent anthropogenic contamination of coastal waters and improve the hygiene of retail fish markets in Mumbai. Highlights Seafood from landing centers and retail markets, as well as from pelagic and demersalhabitats were similarly contaminated with Salmonella. Fish species widely consumed in the region of this study were found highly contaminated with Salmonella.

Three decades before, the gillnet was the major gear in Andaman and Nicobar Islands(ANI), India, because of the less expensive and simple method of operation with non-motorised small dinghies or without craft. Earlier, the gillnet landing was 39% of the total landings and a further report said 27%, which indicated the decrease in gillnet landings. The present study was carried out from 2014 to 2018 at four main fish landing centers (FLCs) Junglighat, Dignabad, Guptapara and Wandoor of ANI to investigate the present status of major gillnet landings. Altogether 1097 visits were carried out at all FLCs and 63.1% of visits occurred at Junglighat. The total landings of all FLCs were 3880.6 tons, of which 98.6% were recorded at Junglighat. The total gillnet landings were 330.4tons, of which Driftnet covered 82.1%, followed by bottom plastic(9.8%) and bottom nylon(8%) gillnets. Significant landings (P<0.0001) of Scombridae family were recorded through Drift gillnet (182.47tons) compared to other families. The family of Carangidae(7.71tons) and Clupeidae(16.54tons) were recorded dominantly through bottom plastic and bottom nylon gillnets, respectively. The gillnetters explored 31 fishing grounds in the South, Middle, North and Little Andamans sectors. The significant (P<0.0001) fish catch was recorded from the South Andaman sector. A total of 17 validation experiments carried out in each Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) and Non-PFZ by using PFZ advisories indicated a significant(P<0.0001) catch from PFZ(3.5:1). There was a decline of 18.5% in the landings of gillnet than earlier studies. It is suggested that the fishermen may follow the PFZ forecast for a better catch. The gillnet fishing to be promoted to under-exploited pelagic fishes of these islands will benefit the gillnetters.

Fisheries sector is expected to be a major contributor in the blue economy of Pakistan, however, development in this sector is hampered by major inadequacy in the required infrastructure. There are about 70 major and minor fish landing centers along the coast of Pakistan, however, fish harbors are established at 3 sites in Sindh and 2 sites in Balochistan. In addition, 14 floating jetties have been established in the creek system of Indus Delta whereas one floating jetty was established along Balochistan coast. In almost all cases, fish landing centers have been established without proper planning and taking into consideration the requirement of the fishermen of the area. Karachi Fish Harbour being the biggest landing center is marred with massive congestion, cul-de-sac turning basin which is highly polluted and prevalence of extreme unhygienic condition. Gwadar Fish Harbor and Miniport and landing centers at Pushukan, Jiwani, Damb and Gaddani are improperly designed, therefore, either non-operational or inadequately utilized. Pasni Fish Harbour, because of negligence got heavily silted. Korangi Fish Harbour, although constructed about 30 years back but still could not put into operation because of inadequate facilities and commitment. In almost all cases, fish harbours established in Pakistan are not designed to cope with the development need of blue economy. Additionally other infrastructure such a coastal road and link roads (“farm to market” roads) are also not appropriate for increasing pressure expected of blue economy. The paper will describe major shortcomings in the fisheries infrastructure in Pakistan.

The decline in quality and high post-harvest damage are caused by, among others, the way of catching, poor handling methods, the length of the supply chain, the inadequacy of handling facilities. The way fish are handled both on the ship and in the fish landing is directly related to the quality of the fish. This research was carried out for eight months, namely from April to December 2020, at the Beba Fish Landing Site (TPI) in Takalar Regency. The study aims to analyze the quality level of fish and how to handle fish caught by fishermen landed at TPI Beba Takalar. This research was conducted by survey method through direct observation of fish landed by fishermen at TPI Beba Takalar. The types of fish selected are 10 types of fish that are predominantly landed at the study site. The survey was conducted to collect data on fish quality quality by observing the pH parameters and organoleptic properties of fish including eye conditions, gills, odor, and texture. Observations were also made on how fish were handled in TPI. The data analysis carried out is the determination of pH and organoleptic properties. The results showed that the average organoleptic test results in sample fish were values of 7-8, these values showed that the quality of fish freshness was still good. Meanwhile, the results of measuring the average pH of fish 6.5 - 7.0 show that fish still have good freshness quality. The way the fish handling is carried out at the Beba Landing Site still generally uses coarse ice with improper handling methods.

The Landing Obligation (LO), introduced in 2015 by the Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union (EU-CFP), has been subject to a transitional period until recently. The rationale behind the measure is that all fish species subject to a total allowable catch (TAC) must be landed to increase the sustainability of fishing activities. Through the analysis of official statistical data, it is possible to find out which species of fish were landed and their relative importance, including their monetary value, and verify the potential for consumer acceptance. Some insights are drawn from the interconnection between these three factors (i.e., social acceptability, landings of main fish species, and their market value) with empirical results and the scientific literature using data from Portugal.

Despite the magnitude of domestic and industrial pollution, fishery yield registered in several landing points at Guanabara Bay, between April 2001 and March 2002 was slightly over 19,000 tons, corresponding to a value of US$ 4.8 million. When considered only the fish directed to the food market, the total catch amounted to about 6,300 tons and a value of US$ 3.7 million. Only a few fish species reached expressive densities compatible with commercial fisheries. Among small pelagic fish, Atlantic anchoveta and Brazilian sardinella were the dominant species, while in terms of demersal fish, croakers, mullets and catfishes comprised the main part of the catch. The absence of landing data previous to the spilling of 1.3 million liters of oil in January 2000 led to claims by fishermen representative organizations of values corresponding to about 50 years of fish harvest in the bay. Possibly, a data collection network could be established in a participative way with the main fishermen local associations. The relatively stabilized fisheries in the bay suggested that reasonable inferences could be made, without, necessarily having a complete coverage of all landing points.

Indonesia is a maritime country that has a sea area of 5.8 million km², with enormous potential for marine products. The fisheries sector is one of the things that supports the third largest Indonesian economy with a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Rp 1.900 billion. There are many fishery ports in Indonesia commonly referred to as Fish Landing Base. In North Sumatra itself, there are 23 Fish Landing Base, and one of the areas that include it in the RTRW (Regional Spatial Plan) is Serdang Bedagai Regency, especially in Cermin Beach sub-district. However, the fact that the fisheries sector is not the main attraction of the Pantai Cermin area indicates no fishery center. This Fish Landing Base uses problem-solving to solve existing problems, starting from the formulation stage, location surveys, data collection, literature studies, and comparative studies. To respond these issues, ecological architecture becomes the answer to the problem of design conditions, such as responding according to local conditions both from society and nature. Fish Landing Base in Pantai Cermin expect to respond to users comfortably, creates interaction between users and the environment, and can also form a public space so that it can encourage economic generators based on sources of life in coastal areas, and so become one of the new tourist destinations to enjoy the marine products of Indonesia, especially in Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatera.

Fish provide important protein to human population. The procedures to preserve and maintain quality of fish from fishing until consumption can play a role in contamination with pathogens. Consumption of contaminated sea food products such as fish may lead to food poisoning. Knowledge about the spectrum of fish bacterial contaminants may assist in prevention of contamination and control food poisoning incidences. The present study aimed at characterizing and estimating prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in fresh Indian Mackerel Fish (Rastrelliger kanagurta) from landing sites in Unguja Island. A total of 400 Indian Mackerel Fish were collected from landing sites in Unguja Island and from each fish two samples, skin swab and muscle, were collected. The primary culture was obtained from Mannitol salt agar, Nutrient and Blood agar followed by Gram staining, catalase coagulase tests. PCR targeting 16S rRNA, nuc, mecA, pvl, spa and enterotoxin genes was run to genetically characterize isolates and identify S. aureus. The result indicates that there was growth of bacteria in 359 (89.75%) fish skin swabs and 102 (25.5%) in fish muscle samples. Based on biochemical tests, 27 isolates (6.75%) were confirmed to be Staphylococcus bacteria. Of the 27 isolates, seven (1.75%) were confirmed S. aureus based on PCR. All 27 isolates confirmed to be positive in 16Sr RNA gene, two isolates demonstrated mecA gene and one had SEB and SEC. PCR targeting 16S rRNA, nuc, mecA, pvl, spa and enterotoxin genes was run to genetically characterize isolates and identify S. aureus. This study aimed to explore the marketing channel, marketing cost and marketing margin and problems associated with fish marketing in order to provide recommendations for efficient fish marketing system in Barisal city, southern Bangladesh. Data were collected from seven fish markets of Barisal, southern Bangladesh including Port road fish market, Taltoli bazar fish market, Chaumatha fish market, Notullabad bus stand fish market, Kasipur bazar fish market and Bazar road fish market. Both primary and secondary data were used during 1 year study period from May, 2011 to April, 2012. Primary data were collected through field surveys and pre-structured questionnaire was used for interviewing of 10 organizers, 20 aratdars (commission agent), 50 fish traders and 100 consumers. Secondary source of information consists of published materials such as journals, textbooks, newspapers and also from interviewing different government and non-government officials and members of various fisheries related cooperative societies. The results of this study revealed 11 fish marketing channels in Barisal city’s fish marketing system. The average marketing cost ranged from 4.15% to 8.33% (6.76±0.98) % of the final retail price. The highest and lowest average fish price were recorded as USD 7.07/kg and USD 1.03/kg for giant fresh water prawn and silver carp, correspondingly. Intermediaries’ marketing margin on different species’ marketing fluctuated from 29.6% to 50.28% (39.38±5.22) % for silver carp and brown shrimp marketing, respectively. Establishment of modern fish landing center and retail markets near the fish landing port, introduction of government fish shops and insulated and refrigerated fish vans and fish carriers, training of all personnel related to fish marketing about fish handling, quality of fish, hygiene practices, improvement of existing fish market structure, provision for government and private funding assistance for fishers/fish farmer, formulation and enactment of independent act/ordinance for fish landing and marketing are highly recommended. Fishing on the Sergipe State coast is usually daily but depends on the tide. The main fishing landing port of the municipality of Aracaju is the Aracaju Fishing Terminal (T.P. Aracaju), located in the city center and responsible for 85% of the fishing landings. Data on fishing landings are essential tools for fisheries management, including caught species, fleet size, fishing gear and marketing. Therefore, this study’s aim was to analyze the data collected in the monitoring years from 2010 until 2016 at the T.P. Aracaju observing the developments of fish landings. The Fisheries Landings Monitoring Project - PMPDP specifically monitored and recorded the data at the Terminal Pesqueiro de Aracaju. The results showed that during the monitoring years the landings of fish from 92 vessels, locally called “lancha”, were recorded, of which 50 vessels originated from T.P. Aracaju and the other 42 vessels from other municipalities of Sergipe and other states of Brazil. The total annual production of landed fish was 426t in 2010, 567t in 2011, 504t in 2012, 761t in 2013, 910t in 2014, 822 in 2015 and 737 in 2016. Annual revenue ranged from BRL 2,985,582.00 in 2010 to BRL 8,225,128.7 in 2016, demonstrating that the sale of fish varied little in the years monitored. The work’s results show the real production landed in T.P. Aracaju, on which public policies of fisheries management in the state of Sergipe are based.

Networks play a key role in the functioning of socioecological fishery systems. Most network studies among fish harvesters examining fishing success utilize interviews and questionnaires. Though insightful, such studies are resource and time-intensive and thus unlikely to be replicated frequently through time. Alternatively, commercial landings records and vessel monitoring systems (VMS) provide continuous sources of information that can be used to examine variation in vessel networks through time. We used VMS data to define association networks among vessels. Relationships were found between common network metrics and annual performance based on landings data. Associations between vessels were more closely examined as a function of annual activity, performance, favoured species, and landing port using temporal exponential random graph models. We examined network dynamics across 4 consecutive years. Changes in vessel associations were clearly related to performance, landing port, and species targeted. Network structure could affect the relationship between catch and nominal effort, influencing stock assessments and responses to management actions. Our methodology provides a means to follow network change, identifying situations where more detailed study is warranted.

The increase in fishing activities of fishers in the Lebak Regency is facilitated by the Binuangeun Fish Landing Base (PPI). Every year, there is a growth in fish production at PPI Binuangeun. Production from 2015 to 2019 increased by 671 tons (13.55%). This study aims at formulating and determining strategies for improving the PPI Binuangeun class category. A survey approach was used in this study. Samples were taken by purposive sampling. The improvement in PPI class were categorized using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) scoring method. Results showed that the score was 254 with a success value of 251-300, indicating high potential and standards fulfillment. Thus, PPI Binuangeun can be transferred and upgraded to PPP (Coastal Fishery Port). The results of the AHP suggested that the central priority values for the development of PPI Binuangeun include: supply, auction, landing and marketing activities with the priority value of 0.585. Subsequently, another strategy is expanding the port area with score of 0.409. The support of relevant stakeholders for the development of the fishing port is needed to realize the aspirations of the central and local governments. In artisanal fishery, traditional handling methods such as tossing fish onto the boat bottom or into woven mat baskets and gunny bags after capture are commonly employed. These practices accelerate fish spoilage due to cross contamination and exposure to high ambient temperature. This study aimed at investigating the effect of non-icing (onboard handling methods) on the quality of Lethrinids (Emperor fish, local name: Changu) and Siganids (Rabbitfish, local name: Tafi) landed along the Kenyan coast in comparison to iced fish. Monthly, samples were assessed by sensory methods using Quality Index Method (QIM), Total Viable Counts (TVC) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) producing bacteria considered as specific spoilage organisms (SSO) counts for raw fish; Quantitative Descriptive Analysis (QDA) and Torry score for cooked fillets. Iced fish was characterised by better freshness quality attributes at landing time compared to non-iced at both landing sites. According to the QIM, iced treatment recorded better quality scores that were significantly different from non-iced groups (p<0.05) throughout the study with regard to fish genera. Cooked fillets showed both treatments to be within human consumption limits although non-iced fish were characterised by marginal quality attributes. Microbial assessment depicted TVC to be on average 102- 103 CFU/g and 103- 104 CFU/g in iced and non-iced Lethrinids respectively at both sampling sites. In Siganids higher numbers of 104- 105 CFU/g were recorded in non–iced group, with H2S producing bacteria constituting a higher proportion of TVC. Iced Siganids recorded 102 - 103 CFU/g throughout the study. Fish quality was reported to be inconsistent over the sampled month which reflects the large pressure systems of the Western Indian Ocean and the two distinct monsoon periods considered to differ in warmth. The major cause of deteriorated fish quality observed at landing time in the fishery was attributed to bacterial proliferation accelerated most importantly by non-icing onboard handling practises reported such as tossing fish onto the boat bottom or into woven mat baskets and gunny bags employed by the fishers. Sensory evaluation of cooked fillets and microbiological analysis showed fish was acceptable for human consumption regardless of handling method employed. This assures consumers of acceptable fish quality at landing time as long as good hygienic practices are observed at subsequent stages to consumption.

The purse seine is the dominant fishing tool at the Birea Fish Landing Base (FLB) which generally catches small pelagic fish. Handling fresh fish is an important part of the chain of the fishing industry. The problem that dominates fishermen and owners is the decline in the quality of fish caught due to fishing time at sea, so that preservation technology is needed that is able to maintain the quality of the fish longer from being caught until landed in the fishing port. The purpose of this study was to analyze the handling and quality of the purse seine fish catch and to analyze the handling and quality of the fish catch after landing from the purse seine ship. This research was conducted on a purse seine vessel in Bantaeng Regency from February to March 2020. Of the five vessels that were the object of research, vessels with better fish quality were vessels that used management with a ratio of 1: 1 meaning 1 kg for 1 kg of fish. The behavior management of fish traders in the market and the travel time from the fish caught to the market are factors that influence the effect of the decline in fish quality.

The study was aimed to update the knowledge on the fish landings of the inland fisheries in Basrah province, Iraq. The species composition, species and total landings, and their trends in six landing sites throughout the study region were evaluated during the year 2020-2021. Species compositions were included seven cyprinids’ species, three cichlids’ species, three mullet’s species, and two species from sparids and silurids. The exotic species, C. carpio, tilapias species and C. auratus dominated the landings constituting 44.2% of the total catch, whereas the highly valued native species (M. sharpeyi, L. xanthopterus, C. luteus and A. grypus) forming only 12.4% of the total catch. The total landing reached 2,427.78 t in 2020 and 2,365.15 t in 2021, and these values were higher than what was recorded during the past years since the year 2009. This is due to the prevalence of aliened species and the increase in the fishing effort, such as the numbers of fishermen and fishing boats. Therefore, in fisheries management point of view, it is essential to enhance the stocks of the native species, minimize the dispersal and impacts of some exotic species, and activate the national regulating fishing, exploitation and protection of aquatic organisms to improve the inland fisheries.

There is a growing body of research focused on how angled fish respond to catch-and-release (C&R). However, most of those studies do not span a wide range of body sizes for the targeted species. Physical injury and physiological responses to C&R can be size-dependent, and methods used for landing fish of different sizes vary. As such, studying the response to C&R across a range of fish sizes may help inform best practices that improve outcomes for released fish. Northern Pike (Esox lucius) widely ranges in body size. Anglers may land them by hand, cradle, or net, and they are often released voluntarily or to comply with regulations. We angled 25 Northern Pike (total length 620–1030 mm) from one population and recorded fight, handling, and unhooking times across landing methods (i.e., hand, cradle, net). Prior to release, a pop-off biologging package was temporarily affixed to each fish to monitor locomotor activity, depth, and water temperature during a 12-h period post-release to understand how the interaction of landing method and body size influenced post-release behaviour and short-term fate. Fight and handling time increased with increasing body size. Northern Pike landed with a cradle or net had shorter fight times but longer handling times, compared to fish landed by hand. Post-release locomotor activity was greater for larger fish and those landed with a net. Fish <775mm and landed by hand had greater locomotor activity than fish landed with a net or cradle, while fish >775mm landed by hand had reduced locomotor activity compared to fish landed with a net. There was no post-release mortality observed. Collectively, anglers should use a net for Northern Pike >775 mm to avoid long fight times and reduce post-release exhaustion, but also attempt to reduce the extent of handling associated with fish landed by net.

Abstract The groupers, locally known as “kerapu” in Indonesia, are commercially valuable fish in Indonesia, including Aceh. The groupers are the first fish family to be plundered in most countries’ fisheries industries. However, the biodiversity information of the groupers fished in Aceh is limited. This study was aimed to inventories the grouper species landed in Aceh fish landing sites. The data collection was performed in some fish landing locations (TPI) located in Aceh. In general, this study revealed that Aceh has high grouper diversity. In total, 35 species of the Epinephelidae family were recorded. Epinephelus was the dominant genus found, followed by Cephalopholis, Plectropomus, Variola, Aethaloperca, Anyperodon, and Hyporthodus. Simeulue, Weh island, and Banda Aceh were the locations with the highest diversity of grouper in Aceh. Overall, the data collected from this study would be beneficial for the future management plan of grouper in Aceh and Indonesia.

Discarding fish has been a part of the fisheries for centuries but it has been very difficult to monitor how much is discarded, especially in areas where it is an illegal activity. In this study the ecological and economic effects of discarding were investigated using the Atlantis model for Icelandic waters. Five different scenarios were compared, using different discarding rates and selectivities. The results showed that a complete stop of discarding fish (cod and haddock) and landing everything instead had little ecological and economic impact. Improved selectivity, which would result in not catching the fish that would be discarded, had great beneficial economic effects. The increase in biomass led to higher landings, which consequently led to higher revenue. Also, the cost decreased with increasing biomass, which increased the profit of the fisheries. None of the five scenarios had great ecological effects but only discarding of cod and haddock, which have low discard rates, were considered in this study.

Abstract Dell'Apa, A., Kimmel, D. G., and Clò, S. 2012. Trends of fish and elasmobranch landings in Italy: associated management implications. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1045–1052. Elasmobranchs are extremely vulnerable to overexploitation, owing to their specific biology and life-history characteristics. However, European-managed shark fisheries have historically received less attention than fisheries targeting more commercially important fish species. We analysed and compared the national data of elasmobranch and fish landings in Italy between 1959 and 2004 to examine changes in fishery interest and the exploitation of elasmobranchs over time. Rays (Raja spp.) and smooth-hounds (Mustelus spp.) are the only elasmobranch categories present in the data, but also other similar species could have been mistakenly counted within these groups. Elasmobranch landings were steady until the beginning of the 1970s, peaked in the 1990s, then sharply declined. The mean annual landing for elasmobranchs between 1997 and 2004 decreased 77% compared with the previous years (1959–1982). This decrease may be attributed to overharvesting that occurred during the 1980s and 1990s in Italian seas. This was likely a direct consequence of the 41/82-law, which was developed to manage fish and not elasmobranchs. A direct effect of the 41/82-law was the establishment of an unreported and unregulated elasmobranch fishery since 1983 that lasted almost 10 years. We suggest that the conservation status of elasmobranch species in the Mediterranean and Black Seas be reconsidered.
