From 1850 through approximately 1920, wealthy entrepreneurs and elected officials created “grand avenues” lined by mansions in New York City, Chicago, Detroit, and other developing US cities. This paper examines the birthplaces of grand avenues to determine whether they have remained sustainable as magnets for healthy and wealthy people. Using data from the US EPA’s EJSCREEN system and the CDC’s 500 cities study across 11 cities, the research finds that almost every place where a grand avenue began has healthier and wealthier people than their host cities. Ward Parkway in Kansas City and New York’s Fifth Avenue have continued to be grand. Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C., Richmond’s Monument Avenue, St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, and Los Angeles’s Wilshire Boulevard are national and regional symbols of political power, culture and entertainment, leading to sustainable urban grand avenues, albeit several are challenged by their identification with white supremacy. Among Midwest industrial cities, Chicago’s Prairie Avenue birthplace has been the most successful, whereas the grand avenues of St. Louis, Cleveland, Detroit, and Buffalo have struggled, trying to use higher education, medical care, and entertainment to try to rebirth their once pre-eminent roles in their cities.

In the passage above, he ponders the peculiar metamorphosis that overtakes him whenever he crosses the Atlantic. Cut off from the hustling world of Broadway and Fifth Avenue, he loses his “real self,” becoming instead an autograph-hunting, bridge-playing, opera-glassing “ship self.” It is as though the ship has remade Dale and the social world around him (Fig. 1). Within this altered world, new sights become old sights, and eccentric clothing or mannerisms come to seem commonplace. Dale recalls seeing a young woman wearing a Panama hat covered with autographs from her fellow passengers. If the woman dared to “walk down Broadway or Fifth Avenue wearing that hideous autograph hat,” he writes, “[s]he would probably be followed by a howling and derisive mob. . . . Yet on board she was unmolested. After the first few days nobody noticed the autograph hat.”

The present study used multiple regression analyses to examine the relationships between fifth-grade social skills and eighth-grade academic achievement. Data were drawn from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study–Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999 (ECLS-K). Results indicated no relationship between positive or negative social behavior in fifth grade and academic achievement or teacher-rated academic skills in eighth grade. However, consistent with previous studies, fifth-grade approaches to learning were found to be positive predictors of both academic achievement and teacher-rated academic skills in eighth grade. In addition, these results suggest that socioeconomic status plays a significant and potentially unexplored avenue for understanding these outcomes. These results further illuminate the way behaviors in elementary school relate to academic adjustment to middle school.

For Reiter, this bold venture in professional nursing education marked the attainment of a dream. Here at last was a graduate school of nursing requiring the baccalaureate degree for admission, under the direction of a nurse, and focused on education for advanced clinical practice. This paper tells the story of Reiter, the Graduate School of Nursing at New York Medical College, the development of an educational program for advanced nurse-clinician practice, and the belief that personal care of the patient is the heart of nursing.

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam; and even though it is primarily a spiritual endeavour, its main objective is to make its participants peacebuilders when they return to their communities. This paper seeks to explore Hajj values for potential peacebuilding among Muslims in Ghana. The paper is an analysis of a qualitative study that utilized survey questionnaires; in-depth interviews; and participant observation as the main research techniques to collect data. The study found among other things that critical values of peacebuilding such as forgiveness, reconciliation, and good relationships are inherent in the performance of Hajj; and that Ghanaian Muslims who are passionate about Hajj can leverage these values to build peace among themselves and within communities in which they live. The study concludes that the Ghana Hajj Board can use its Hajj village concept to instill peacebuilding values in Muslims who participate in it annually.

This research is a type of pre-experimental research with a population of all students at SDN 331 Borongtellu. The sample in this study were fifth grade students at SDN 331 Borongtellu. The instruments used in this research are thematic learning outcomes tests, observation sheets and questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis techniques and inferential analysis. Based on the analysis shows that the students' thematic learning outcomes are completed individually, classically completed and there is an increase in learning outcomes with a gain value of more than 0.29, student activities reach the active criteria, student responses to the Logan Avenue Problem Solving-Heuristic (LAPS-Heuristic) positive with the ability of teachers to manage learning very well. Thus, it can be said that the Logan Avenue Problem Solving-Heuristic (LAPS-Heuristic) learning model is effectively applied in thematic learning to the students of SDN 331 Borongtellu.

This article deals with a rare imperial document: a letter by the Emperor Honorius commonly known as the Epistula Honorii. According to its incipt, it was addressed to the soldiers stationed in Pamplona during the barbarian invasions of the first decade of the fifth century. Building upon the existing scholarship on this text, this work re-examines the Epistula’s textual transmission and content, offering new readings of it. In addition to a comparative analysis with other Late Antique and Early Medieval sources, primarily of legal nature, a special similarity to what have been called imperial adlocutiones, due to both the text’s form and its content, will be shown. Consequently, this approach opens up a new avenue for understanding of this text.

The support for this latter and less common interpretation is that the clerk, working in an upscale boutique on fifth avenue, would immediately be able to tell that Annabel and Midge are not the kind of people who would be able to afford the piece of jewelry in question. In fact, as the clerk can surmise, they would not even have an idea of what it may cost, which is why he is comfortable lying to them.

This pilot study evaluated the impact of the Katalyst curriculum, a fifth-grade experiential learning program, on students’ knowledge of a healthy lifestyle’s impact on body functions. Katalyst’s interactive curriculum spans two days and includes four, 60-min stations on body systems: cardiovascular/endocrine, gastrointestinal, neurological, and respiratory/musculoskeletal. Three schools were recruited, and two schools completed the intervention sessions. Prior to beginning the stations, fifth-grade students completed a 37-item questionnaire to assess knowledge and perceptions. Students completed the same survey at the end of the Katalyst intervention. Teachers at the school also completed a survey post intervention to provide feedback on the program. Frequency and paired analyses were conducted on student responses and summative content analysis on teacher and volunteer feedback. The School 1 completer (n = 63) baseline mean knowledge score was 66.2%. The School 2 completer (n = 47) baseline mean knowledge score was 67.3%. Following the Katalyst intervention, both schools showed a statistically significant increase in the mean post score to 70.3% (p = 0.0017) and 78.4%(p < 0.0001) at School 1 (n = 63) and School 2 (n = 47), respectively. Teacher feedback (n = 7) revealed that Katalyst was effective in meeting state educational health standards and teachers perceived that the students benefitted from the program more than “reading about the body systems in a textbook or health magazine”. The Katalyst pilot study appeared to improve fifth-grade students’ knowledge of body systems and health. Katalyst aligned with state educational standards and is supported by teachers for an experiential learning opportunity. The Katalyst curriculum could be a potential avenue for health educators in Appalachia.

Abstract In 1989, a literary landmark in New York City closed. Scribner’s Bookstore, 597 Fifth Avenue, stood at the epicentre of Manhattan’s retail district. The Scribner’s publishing company was then 153 years old. In the 1920s, driven by genius editor Max Perkins, Scribner’s published Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Wolfe. Scribner’s Magazine was The New Yorker of its day. The bookshop and publisher occupied a 10-storey Beaux-Arts building, designed by Ernest Flagg, which eventually won protection from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Medallions honoured printers Benjamin Franklin, William Caxton, Johann Gutenberg, and Aldus Manutius. The ‘Byzantine cathedral of books’ offered deeply informed personal service. But the paperback revolution gained momentum, bookshop chains like Barnes & Noble and Brentano’s adopted extreme discounting, and the no-discounting Scribner’s business model became unsustainable. Real estate developers swooped in. The bookshop’s ignominious end came when Italian clothier Benetton took over its space.

This study examines the potentials of social media marketing for luxury retailers. Social media marketing tactics of three luxury retail brands (Barneys New York, Net-a-Porter.com, and Saks Fifth Avenue) were examined across three major social media sites (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). All posts by the three retailers' posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were recorded on over the course of a week. A content analysis revealed that different social media networks may be effectively used in different ways by luxury retailers. Facebook allows for the greatest connection with consumers (all three retailers had the most followers on Facebook) while Twitter allows for the largest volume of posts; consumer feedback was highest on Instagram. Overall, social media marketing proved an effective, low-cost tool for the three retailers, with payoff well justifying the effort. For example, all three retailers had over 1,200 shares and retweets on Facebook and Twitter.

Autonomous driving technology in urban environments is a very important avenue of research. Notably, the question of how to plan safe lane-changing trajectories is a challenge in multi-vehicle traffic environments. In our research, three kinds of polynomial lane changing mathematical models were analyzed and compared. It was found that the fifth polynomial is the most suitable for lane changing trajectories; it is defined as a generalized lane-changing trajectory cluster, whereby the minimum lane change time is determined by the vehicle lateral stability threshold. Here, a collision avoidance algorithm is proposed to eliminate unsafe trajectories. Finally, the TOPSIS algorithm is used to solve the multi-objective optimization problem, and the optimal lane-changing expected trajectory is obtained from the safe trajectory cluster. The simulation results showed improvements in lane-changing efficiency of 6.67% and no collisions in the overtaking condition. In general, the proposed method of identifying the optimal lane changing trajectory can achieve safe, efficient and stable lane changing.

In 1949, the National Basketball League became the National Basketball Association (NBL). The league’s corporate offices, located at 645 Fifth Avenue in New York City’s Olympic Tower, serve as the base of operations for its numerous corporate executives. The All-Star Game, an amateur basketball competition held in February by the National Basketball Association, features 24 of the best players in the league. It is the main event of the three-day NBA All-Star Week, which runs from Friday to Sunday. However, what makes these athletes practice so much? In essence, Basketball is both livelihood & occupation of choice for such athletes. These players enjoy playing the game but are well compensated for their labor. They must also practice daily to keep great basketball talents at a high level if players want to maintain their NBA professions successfully. The research on the NBA’s development mode status analysis and optimization approach is explained in detail in this paper.

Background: Schizophrenia is associated with high relapse rates, and medication nonadherence is a major factor contributing toward relapse. Since medication adherence and treatment awareness are linked, an alarming need was felt to evaluate the level of drug treatment awareness in patients who have schizophrenia. Besides, patients who have schizophrenia are often dependent on their caregivers for medications. Hence, the current study was also designed to look into drug treatment awareness among caregivers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study. Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia as per The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition were included, provided they had good insight and had been prescribed medications at the study center for at least three months. Caregivers were included using the Pollak and Perlick criteria. The sociodemographic profile of the patients and caregivers was recorded, and further assessment for treatment awareness was done using the prevalidated Drug Treatment Awareness Questionnaire (DTAQ). Results: A total of 166 patients and 157 caregivers were enrolled. Mean drug awareness scores among patients and caregivers did not show statistically significant differences (P= 0.22). Mean ± SD DTAQ awareness scores in patients and caregivers were 12.57 ± 1.81 and 12.84 ± 1.91, respectively. The majority of patients and caregivers (> 90%) possessed awareness in domains related to past medication records and in that of re-visit/re-contact instructions. Awareness was least commonly seen in relation to side effects of medications and details of the prescribed medications, where only about 50% of patients and caregivers possessed awareness. No clinically significant correlation was found between sociodemographic factors and drug treatment awareness scores. Conclusion: Drug treatment awareness in patients and caregivers was comparable and was not reliant on the sociodemographic factors. Special interventions should be conducted to raise drug treatment awareness among patients having insight and their caregivers.

The present article explores the form of meditation called contemplation of the impure (Skt aśubha-bhāvanā; Ch. bújìng guān 不淨觀) and its meticulous description in a Chinese text produced in the early fifth century CE. It illustrates the problematic nature of the pure-impure polarity and suggests that, ultimately, “purity” refers to two different things. As a generic category, it can be understood as a mental construct resulting from the mind’s discursive functioning, which tends to be further complicated by cultural factors. The other avenue for interpreting “purity” is provided in this meditation manual, which describes how meditation on impurity leads to the direct perception of purity, and to the vision of a “pure land.” This stage is identified as a “sign” marking the completion of this contemplative practice. Examining the specific nature of this capstone event and some of its implications lies at the core of the research whose initial results are presented here. Although this particular Buddhist contemplation of the impure begins with mental images of decaying corpses, it culminates with the manifestation of a vision filling the practitioner with a sense of light and purity. This high point indicates when the practice has been successful, an event that coincides for practitioners with a time when they catch a glimpse of their true nature. The last section of this article further discusses the extent to which positing an intrinsically pure nature—one of the major innovations introduced by Buddhism in fifth-century China—could inform ethical views.

The constituent year effect, a source of relative age disparities, in masters sport has been demonstrated mainly amongst North American samples. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine whether a participation-related constituent year effect exists among athletes (n = 6492) competing in Australian Masters Athletics competitions between 2000 and 2014. The results indicated that a participation-related constituent year effect was observed as the likelihood of participating was significantly higher for masters athletes in their first and second constituent year of any five-year age category (p < 0.0001) and was lower when they were in the fourth or fifth constituent year. The results also indicated this effect is influenced by gender and age. Specifically, the effect was significant for both male (p < 0.0001) and female (p < 0.001) masters athletes; as well during the third, sixth, seventh, and eighth + decades of life (all ps < 0.001). These data demonstrate that despite masters sport being an avenue for promotion of participation and overall health, there is potential for improving how competitive organizational strategies are implemented given the recurring intermittent patterns of participation associated with five-year age brackets which are likely to compromise benefits.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is the modulation technology used in Fourth Generation (4G) and Fifth Generation (5G) wireless communication systems, and it will likely be essential to Sixth Generation (6G) wireless communication systems. However, OFDM introduces a high Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) in the time domain due to constructive interference among multiple subcarriers, increasing the complexity and cost of the amplifiers and, consequently, the cost and complexity of 6G networks. Therefore, the development of new solutions to reduce the PAPR in OFDM systems is crucial to 6G networks. The application of Machine Learning (ML) has emerged as a promising avenue for tackling PAPR issues. Along this line, this paper presents a comprehensive review of PAPR optimization techniques with a focus on ML approaches. From this survey, it becomes clear that ML solutions offer customized optimization, effective search space navigation, and real-time adaptability. In light of the demands of evolving 6G networks, integration of ML is a necessity to propel advancements and meet increasing prerequisites. This integration not only presents possibilities for PAPR reduction but also calls for continued exploration to harness its potential and ensure efficient and reliable communication within 6G networks.

The urban world in which many of us live does not lend itself to the metric of Euclidean geometry. Assuming that the avenues are perpendicular to the streets in a city, the distance from “fifth and fifty-first” to “seventh and thirty-fourth” is not the familiar Euclidean distance found by applying the Pythagorean theorem. The distance must instead be measured in blocks from fifth to seventh avenues and then from fifty-first to thirty-fourth streets. This taxicab metric, one of several me tries used in mathematics (Eisenberg and Khabbaz 1992), is practical for many applications and helps students pursue interesting investigations while deepening their understanding of familiar topics.

Does President Trump face domestic costs for foreign policy inconsistency? Will co-partisans and opposition-partisans equally punish Donald Trump for issuing flippant international threats and backing down? While the president said he could “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” without losing voters, the literature consistently shows that individuals, regardless of partisanship, disapprove of leaders who jeopardize the country’s reputation for credibility and resolve. Given the atypical nature of the Trump presidency, and the severe partisan polarization surrounding it, we investigate whether the logic of audience costs still applies in the Trump era. Using a unique experiment fielded during the 2016 presidential transition, we show that Republicans and Democrats impose equal audience costs on President Trump. And by varying the leader’s identity, between Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and “The President,” we demonstrate that the public adheres to a non-partisan logic in punishing leaders who renege on threats. Yet we also find Presidents Trump and Obama can reduce the magnitude of audience costs by justifying backing down as being “in America’s interest.” Even Democrats, despite their doubts of Donald Trump’s credibility, accept such justifications. Our findings encourage further exploration of partisan cues, leader-level attributes, and leader-level reputations.
