Pełny tekst źródłaTrees need light for their growth and development. However, some species have the capacity, or preference, to tolerate shade without this being detrimental to their development. This ecological preference leads to different strategies in these species, resulting in a compromise between performance and safety, in terms of mechanical support, conduction and protection against bio-aggressors. Grouping together forest species that share common growth strategies is essential if wood is to be used wisely, responsibly and profitably. The study of ecological strategies and associated functional traits provides a better understanding not only of biodiversity but also of the development of wood quality in terms of technological properties useful to man. Three ecological strategies linked to light temperament were studied. They include species that are light-demanding (pioneer), species that grow in full sun but can tolerate temporary shade (hemi-heliophilous) and species that can grow with little light (shade-tolerant). The species studied are tropical hardwoods from Gabon that have been tested in the laboratory and characterised anatomically, physically, mechanically and chemically. The methods used include academic methods and new rapid, non-destructive methods for determining wood properties. The results obtained were first compared with the results of CIRAD's physical and mechanical database in relation to the ecology of the species. Similarities and some differences were observed. Secondly, relationships were established between the anatomy, chemistry, physics and mechanics of wood. The results show that shade species have better physical and mechanical performance and therefore better mechanical support. They also have low anisotropy, which translates into good dimensional stability. This high performance is linked to their very thick walls, numerous vessels, smaller vessel diameters than hemi-heliophiles, high wood density and high levels of lignin and hemicelluloses. The high density of these species is linked to their very thick walls. These species can be used in materials engineering in heavy construction or load-bearing structures and in aesthetic design, for example. Pioneer species were found to have a significant amount of extractables compared with hemiheliophilic species, giving them good protection against bio-aggressors. They could therefore be used for outdoor constructions. However, they were more sensitive to dimensional variations due to variations in humidity. There was no significant difference between the extractives content of pioneer and shade-tolerant species. Overall, hemi-heliophilic species were not statistically different from pioneer and shade-tolerant species. No significant differences were found between the fibre lengths and cellulose content of the three temperaments. Lesser-known shade-tolerant and shade-intolerant secondary species were identified as potential substitutes for heavily exploited species in terms of the quality of their wood

Pełny tekst źródłaThe aim of this work was to characterize the seasonal variations in leaf and trunk gas exchange of tropical rainforest canopy trees exposed to dry seasons. This study focused on measuring gas exchange (CO2 and H2O) at the leaf and trunk level during dry seasons in a Terra firme forest and in a seasonally flooded forest in order to specify their sensitivity and response to drought. Our results showed that part of the studied trees do not encounter a large reduction in soil water content during dry seasons, suggesting that they display deep rooting systems.During long dry periods, we recorded a decrease in leaf photosynthesis, trunk CO2 efflux or sap flow density, and foliar respiration to a lesser extent, for a majority of the trees. Nevertheless, large differences among trees in their response to these conditions were observed, suggesting distinct sensitivities and response to soil drought among trees. Furthermore, these variations were greatest when soil drought was highest (2008 as compared to 2007).In seasonally flooded forest, the decrease in gas exchange was less, suggesting that these trees do have access to wet layers during the dry season, close to the groundwater. However, during wet seasons, we observed a negative effect of anoxia for some trees, whereas others did not display any response, suggesting large differences in tolerance to anoxia among trees abundant in these seasonally flooded forests. We conclude that would seasonal soil droughts increase over the next decades, large vegetation changes might occur because of the large differences among trees in their functional response to soil drought conditions

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study explores the ecological significance of inter- and intraspecific variations of growth and functional traits found in tropical tree species of French Guiana in relation to light regime. We demonstrate that the syndrome of leaf traits associated with light -niche (longer life span, higher leaf mass per area of more shade tolerant species) holds among a set of 14 species comprising no pioneer nor any shade specialist species. Our results further suggest that plasticity of leaf mass per area expressed at the sapling stage may reflect adaptation to the spatial heterogeneity of light conditions encountered both at the sapling stage and later. Multivariate analysis provides evidence of a close linkage between leaf lifespan, relative crown depth and light-niche optimum. The plasticity in relative crown depth observed in shade-intolerant species can not be interpreted in terms of self-shading avoidance. Rather, crown depth adjustment was found to be a consequence of changes in growth rates and mortality rates of leaves and branches imposed by current light conditions and occurring at the whole-plant level. At the adult stage, our results point to competition for light making an unexpectedly low contribution to individual tree growth variations, contrasting with a major effect of species identity. We argue that this pattern of variation is likely to result from the vertical niche partitioning of species and the high abundance of small-statured species that are moderately responsive to light competition (consistent with their adaptation to understorey conditions). Light-niche differentiation of juvenile trees and vertical stratification of adult trees provide strong evidence for light niche partitioning in the three-dimensional space of tropical forests

Pełny tekst źródłaHydraulic traits are related to the fundamental functions of conduction and drought resistance, driving plant ecology, evolution, and processes related to climate change. However, these traits are still poorly documented for tropical rainforest, hindering our understanding of tropical tree ecology and the future of tropical forests. Through a trait-based approach combining leaf and stem in-depth anatomy and physiology, this thesis analyses the structure and the functioning of tree leafy shoots, a compartment exposed to the most severe water stress within a tree. This thesis is based on a dataset of 42 canopy tree species sampled in a rainforest in French Guiana, exemplifying a large range of leaf size. A second dataset, aiming at better understanding the sources of intraspecific variability, focus on the pioneer tree species Cecropia obtusa Trécul (Urticaceae). The first part aims at understanding the coordination between leaf and stem across a large leaf size range, by analysing the morpho-anatomical and functional changes underlying the leaf size-stem size relationship for 42 tropical rainforest canopy trees. This framework is also applied at the intraspecific level for the model C. obtusa, for the petiole-lamina relationship. Understanding leaf size-related changes allows to properly investigate ontogenetic and seasonal effects on leaf vascular and hydraulic traits for C. obtusa. The second part aims at better understanding the drought resistance of the leafy shoot. By retaining 25 species, the anatomical determinants of drought-induced embolism resistance for stems are studied. The different properties and mechanisms already known for temperate plants are investigated jointly to consolidate or not their existence, and understand their relative contribution. Vulnerability segmentation (i.e. differentiation of embolism resistance) at the leaf-stem interface is investigated across 20 species. I further evidenced (i) a large spectrum of variation for vulnerability segmentation across species, (ii) a positive relation with hydraulic segmentation (i.e. differentiation of hydraulic resistance), suggesting that some species promote both hydraulic and vulnerability segmentations to decouple hydraulically leaf and stem, and (iii) that vulnerability segmentation has a massive role in enhancing the theoretical desiccation time of shoots, confirming vulnerability segmentation as a drought resistance mechanism for tropical trees. In a final part, all traits are merged to test their predictive power for species hydro-topographic distribution and growth-mediated response to water stress, at a local scale. In the general discussion, I discuss the functional signification of leaf size and drought resistance traits for tropical rainforest, as also potential relation between leaf size and drought resistance
