Streszczenie:
This research examines the Australian farm tourism sector within both family business and rural studies research paradigms. It analyses which farmers in Australia establish farm tourism businesses, and why. It extends previous research on farm tourism both in breadth, by covering an entire continent; and in depth, using qualitative approaches to determine the internal and external triggers for individual decisions, as well as quantitative approaches to establish the operational structure of the sector and the overall motivations of its operators. There were three separate stages to this study, with an increasingly detailed focus. In the first, a national database of farm tourism operators was constructed from publicly available sources. In the second phase, a 92 item questionnaire was mailed to every operator, with a response rate just below 50%. In the third phase, detailed interviews were conducted with 43 farm tourism operators either on site or by telephone. There are over 650 working farms which offer farm based tourism products in Australia. A few are large, remote and luxurious, but the majority are small, family priced and close to major population centres. There are around 14,000 beds, with mean occupancy rate 35%, and total annual turnover AUS$115 million. Only 0.2% of Australian farmers have taken up tourism, as compared with 10-20% in some European countries. There are four major groups of farm tourism operators in Australia: full time farms, part time farms, retirement farms and lifestyle farms. There are statistically significant differences between these groups in the make up of their income streams, and in their motivations and family structures. Australian farm tourism operators attach slightly more significance to social than financial gains. Particular groups of operators, however, do indeed rely on farm tourism as a key income stream. For lifestyle operators, the farm component is principally a lifestyle luxury and a tourism attraction, with tourism generating the principal income. For retirement farmers, farming is no longer at a commercially viable scale, and tourism provides the cashflow to keep the operators on their farm property during semi retirement. For part time operators, tourism provides an income stream in addition and, where possible, in preference to off farm employment, for farm families having difficulty making ends meet. For full time farmers, tourism is not seen as a long term important income source, but as a diversification option which enabled them to survive external economic shocks caused by changes in commodity prices or government policies. Whereas an income from farm tourism seems to have been an important stopgap or supplement which allows the operators to maintain their farms and farming lifestyles, it does not necessarily generate sufficient income to support two generations on the same property. At least to date, therefore, it appears that farm tourism cannot be relied upon routinely as a new lifeline for rural communities in Australia. It does indeed have a role to play, but the role may be different in different parts of the country. In the more remote areas, farm tourism can provide a buffer for an older generation of farming families, helping to maintain stability in rural communities and land tenure. In areas popular with amenity migrants, however, farm tourism may act as an agent of change, part of a package which brings former urban professionals to a rural semi retirement.

Streszczenie:
PROBLEM In the last few years farm tourism or agritourism as it is also referred to has enjoyed increasing success because of its generally acknowledged role as a promoter of economic and social development of rural areas. As a consequence, a plethora of studies have been dedicated to this tourist sector, focusing on a variety of issues. Nevertheless, despite the difficulties of many farmers to orient their business towards potential customers, the contribution of the marketing literature has been moderate. PURPOSE This dissertation builds upon studies which advocate the necessity of farm tourism to innovate itself according to the increasingly demanding needs of customers. Henceforth, the purpose of this dissertation is to critically evaluate the level of professionalism reached in the farm tourism market within a marketing approach. METHODOLOGY This dissertation is a cross-country perspective incorporating the marketing of farm tourism studied in Germany and Italy. Hence, the marketing channels of this tourist sector are examined both from the supply and the demand side by means of five exploratory studies. The data collection has been conducted in the timeframe of 2006 to 2009 in manifold ways (online survey, catalogues of industry associations, face-to-face interviews, etc.) according to the purpose of the research of each study project. The data have been analyzed using multivariate statistical analysis. FINDINGS A comprehensive literature review provides the state of the art of the main differences and similarities of farm tourism in the two countries of study. The main findings contained in the empirical chapters provide insights on many aspects of agritourism including how the expectations of farm operators and customers differ, which development scenarios of farm tourism are more likely to meet individuals’ needs, how new technologies can impact the demand for farm tourism, etc. ORIGINALITY/VALUE The value of this study is in the investigation of the process by which farmers’ participation in the development of this sector intersects with consumer consumption patterns. Focusing on this process should allow farm operators and others including related businesses to more efficiently allocate resources.

Streszczenie:
The engagement of farm businesses with pluriactivity in response to persistent downward pressures on agricultural incomes provided an enduring focus for research in agricultural geography during the late 20th century. This study contributes to and further develops the pluriactivity genre of research through a detailed investigation of farm-based recreation. A review of existing literature reveals that farm-based recreation has been widely acknowledged as a significant component of pluriactivity, yet the reasons for its contemporary development remain largely unexplored for two main interrelated reasons. First, the concept of pluriactivity is inadequate because it places emphasis on income-generating non-agricultural enterprises, yet many recreational activities fill non-economic roles within the farm business and have therefore been ignored in previous research. Secondly, those studies that examine farm-based recreation specifically are anachronistic and suffer from a failure to define it consistently. The variety of recreational activities included within 'recreation' varies considerably between studies. For example, the majority of studies have not included shortterm recreational events in their analyses. The economic nature of these studies is again a handicap. This study resolves definitional issues and presents a conceptual framework for a more rigorous analysis of farm-based recreation than hitherto has been attempted. The framework synthesizes the underlying principles of the established modified political economy approach in agricultural geography with insights from postmodernism in rural geography as represented by the 'cultural turn'. It represents a rational, sensible and profitable approach which combines the major strengths and takes account of the criticisms of both perspectives. Its value for this study is that a flexible methodology can be used to ensure that the analysis is sensitive to the great diversity of both recreational activities and the farm business forms within which they are enmeshed. An extensive postal questionnaire survey of over 4000 farms is conducted in eight geographical regions (counties) selected primarily on the basis of their agricultural characteristics. This enables the diversity of recreational activities to be fully appreciated and a geographical analysis of them to be undertaken, features rarely explored by the literature. Building upon the quantitative approach of the postal questionnaire survey, 20 individual farm businesses are selected for more detailed qualitative investigation in the form of ethnographic case studies. Using the conceptual framework as a guide, results from both quantitative and qualitative approaches are discussed in an integrative way to provide a novel analysis of farm-based recreation. The results highlight the widespread occurrence of recreational activities. Indeed, 41% of the postal questionnaire survey respondents provide some form of permanent and/or temporary recreational activity, a figure significantly higher than typically reported in previous studies. Differentiated by broad categories, and specific types, the diversity of different forms of recreational provision becomes apparent, highlighting the occurrence of numerous types rarely documented before. Distinct patterns emerge from an analysis of the inter- and intra-regional incidence of recreational provision. The characteristics of recreational activities and the factors influencing their initiation, operation and evolution are explored. The relatively low level of financial motivation expressed in relation to the initiation of recreational activities is of particular interest (42% of farms with recreational provision), and highlights the abundance of non-financially motivated forms and the importance of interest, altruistic and social motives. Clear variations in motives according to categories, and types, of recreational activity are also observed and two broad groups, characterised as economic 'diversification recreation' and non-economic 'cultural recreation', emerge. Detailed analysis of the relationships between recreational provision and farm business characteristics and operation identifies many strong links. Finally, an exploration of the reasons for the non-adoption of recreational activities is undertaken. With a renewed policy emphasis on rural development, including on-farm diversification, from the Agenda 2000 reform of the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) currently being implemented, these findings make a significant contribution to the understanding of a phenomenon that is likely to be important to both farmers and researchers in agricultural geography in the early 21st century.

Streszczenie:
This thesis describes a research project in the South West Tapestry Region of Western Australia which uses phenomenological method to investigate the experiences of farm tourism hosts and guests. The overall aim of the research was to identify motivations of both hosts and guests in order to determine to what degree farm tourism in the SWTR provides the kind of holiday experience people are seeking. Phenomenology was chosen as a flexible yet rigorous methodology for researching lived experience, which would enable an in-depth understanding of motivations surrounding hosting farm tourism and choosing a farm tourism holiday. The initial stage of the project involved the collection of sociodemographic data from farm tourism operators with the purpose of documenting the current status of farm tourism in the region, and to build a regional profile as a context for the phenomenological investigation. Stage I of the research produced some significant findings in terms of expansion in the self-catering sector, seasonal demand patterns and visitor sources, all of which have obvious implications for future development and sustainability of farm tourism in the region. The research found that the amount of time hosts spent with guests in activities was a more important factor in the development of close relationships than accommodation type. The phenomenological investigation found hosts to be highly motivated to provide an enjoyable holiday experience on the farm for their guests, meaningful activities for children, and an opportunity for people to relax and recover from the stresses of city life. They enjoyed meeting new people and engaging in social activities with guests. There were some tensions, particularly around shared space, which need further investigation. The guests' motivations indicated they were seeking the sorts of experiences hosts were able to provide, which augurs well for the sector in terms of future business development. There was a preference from both groups for developing friendships with people who shared a common interest.

Streszczenie:
This study analyses the processes of agricultural and rural restructuring that have characterised rural economies since the end of the Second World War, leading to a reorientation from productivist to more entrepreneurial models of farming. In particular, the transition from the conventional role of the farmer as price taker, which requires appropriate technical and managerial competency, towards that of price maker, which calls for broader entrepreneurial competencies is highlighted. This transition is explored in the context of farm tourism, identified as a diversification strategy to promote a more sustainable rural economy and to protect farm incomes against market fluctuation. To date, the literature on farm tourism has overlooked many of these processes and whilst conceptualising the farmer as an entrepreneur, has not sufficiently engaged with key theories of entrepreneurship or indeed emergent frameworks of entrepreneurial skill and competency. The research draws on a mixed-method’s approach, which includes two distinct research phases conducted in the North West of England. In the initial phase, a survey of 118 diversified farm tourism businesses identifies that whilst the primary motivation to diversify is to provide additional household income, these farmers value business and management competencies at the expense of entrepreneurial competency. Thus, this initial phase, challenges the extent to which farmers are currently entrepreneurial in the context of the rural and agricultural restructuring highlighted. At the second research phase, utilising Q Methodology, a technique designed for the systematic study of subjectivity, a 42-item instrument developed from the extant literature on entrepreneurial competence was administered to 15 farm tourism entrepreneurs. The Q analysis identifies three distinct perspectives on entrepreneurial skill and competency which farmers identify as necessary for successful diversification, termed: the Reflective Leader, the Opportunity Aware Organiser and the Opportunity Driven Innovator. The main characteristics of these groups are discussed and provide the basis for a taxonomy of the farmer as a rural tourism entrepreneur. Moreover, the results reveal the heterogeneity of diversified farmers in the study region, which encapsulates a wide range of perspectives from the risk averse to the opportunity aware, from the managerial to the entrepreneurial The thesis concludes by presenting a conceptual model of entrepreneurial competency, as well an additional taxonomy which classifies the farmer as a rural entrepreneur within a broad landscape of farming identity. The work thus provides a better understanding of farm tourism and a valuable insight into the complexity of rural and farm tourism entrepreneurship. As well as suggestions for future research, the findings will be of interest to academics and policy actors, with the conclusions providing a foundation to better understand farm diversification. Insights that may better inform rural business support, training and advisory services and foster critical policy discussion and debate.

The goal of this thesis is to develop a sustainable and realistic business plan for the development of a tourist attraction based around the contact between visitors and farm animals. The thesis consists of the evaluation of tourism and agrotourism in Slovakia and in the region of Liptov, followed by the secondary research on agrotourism attractions. The selection of target groups, followed by primary market research and its evaluation, analysis of strategic partners and location, as well as the operations, marketing, and financials are presented in this thesis. The data presented prove that the business idea of creating a tourist attraction featuring farm animals is a viable tourist platform to build a business upon. The contingencies and risks are also analyzed resulting in a complete and viable business plan.

In October 2012, then-Mayor Kevin Johnson, surrounded by the region’s chefs, restaurateurs, and others working in the food arena, proclaimed the City of Sacramento “America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.” The basis for the designation, in part, was Sacramento’s geographic proximity to agricultural production. With more than 50 farmers markets and between 7,000 – 8,000 acres of “boutique farms” in the region, the Mayor stated the designation would be more than “simply a marketing campaign.” Based on interviews with a wide variety of people working in “local food” (including a non-profit organization with a mission to get kids to eat their vegetables, large corporations, and small businesses) this thesis will explore the concept of local food in Sacramento, the Farm-to-Fork movement and what it has meant for the region. With an annual festival that has seen increased attendance in each of its five years, from an estimated 50,000 people the first year, to 75,000 people in 2016, the designation branded Sacramento as a food destination city bringing visitors and their dollars as intended. Beyond a well-attended festival, what has the history behind the title of America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital meant to the local food system and how has it impacted local farmers, chefs, restaurateurs and those whose livelihoods are closely tied to food?

Thesis (MA (History))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Farm tourism is a fast growing industry in South Africa and internationally. It not only supplements farmers’ income, but can also contribute to social and economic developments in rural areas. Before farm tourism can be implemented it is important to evaluate a farm and its surrounding district to assess whether it can be a successful enterprise. Certain norms are applied in the process of assessment. An assessment was done of the farms Soutpan and Sewefontein, and also the districts of Calvinia and Nieuwoudtville. The location of the farms and surrounding areas were evaluated according to climate, ecology and geology. Tourist attractions on the farms and surrounding areas were also evaluated. The study offers a cultural historical perspective on farm tourism: the history of the farms and their owners is discussed, as well as the architecture with regard to style, the materials and building methods. Daily life and farm activities of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are investigated. This includes aspects of intangible culture, such as word art (including place names and names of persons), as well as weatherlore. Tested against the system of norms, it would be possible to run a farm tourism industry on Soutpan, because there are several attractions to entice tourists to the farm. The Karoo topography and isolation of the farm will however not be acceptable to all tourists. A few of the farm buildings are derelict and extensive capital investment will be needed to repair them. Extensive marketing will also be necessary to successfully advertise and run the farm as a tourist venture. Sewefontein, on the other hand, complies to all the relevant norms and has already been established as a successful farm tourism enterprise.

The Torres Novas municipality occupies a central position in the Portuguese territory, covering an area marked by transitory characteristics, with particular environmental and historic wealth. The old quintas (farms), which once abounded in the municipality, are part of that wealth, and examples of a very interesting marriage of human ingenuity and natural beauty. In this work, we wish to contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics and potential of Torres Novas’ farms, the importance of their preservation and restoration, and the role they may play in regions future touristic development. We start by surveying the existing farms, through literary review and cartographic analysis, and follow up with a number of representative case studies. Based on the collected data, we prepare a general proposal intended on farm protection and enhancement, rooted in the cooperation between land owners and public entities, aiming for economic viability. In order to showcase the ideas from the general proposal in a more down-to-earth setting, we develop a cultural and environmental itinerary and scenic trail that is centred on the Almonda River and integrates other elements of the region’s landscape, allowing for a better understanding of its culture and its farms.

Because of a decrease in revenue streams farms have been forced to diversify their businesses to include other business areas than traditional agriculture. The most common area of diversification is farm based tourism where the farm family opens up their home to tourists. Tourism differs greatly from the business of agriculture which makes the transition between these areas problematic. Our theoretic and empirical findings all show that actors within this industry lack knowledge of marketing and communication. Therefore we have chosen to focus on how actors within this industry can coordinate and market their businesses.

Wannborga på Öland AB is our main case study object and is further complemented with other similar case study objects. Based on a "system approach" we have analysed Wannborga and their business with the purpose of helping them and other actors with their business development. An entrepreneurial perspective with focus on the entrepreneur's own personal development has characterized our analyses of their business. The theoretical framework is largely based on post modern perspectives where broad generalizations has been put aside to subjective and individualistic interpretations of the market and the nature of Wannborga as a business.

The main problem Wannborga and other actors within this industry are facing is largely based on the lack of focus on the overall picture of their concept. All the components within their business and how these components interact should be analysed before an effective communication strategy can be implemented. An actor should analyse their overall concept to identify customer benefits and the value provided. Based on this analysis a clear message can be constructed and communicated to different segments.

Following each topic discussed we provide specific recommendations for how Wannborga should develop their business. We conclude this thesis with a model for a communication strategy that illustrates how the different components interact with each other, and the different steps to be taken when constructing a communication strategy. This model gives an overview which is consisient with the holistic perspective of a system approach. This model makes our analyses less specific for Wannborga and therefore more generally applicable for other actors within this industry.

Streszczenie:
This PhD examines farm tourism in Wales, a marginal area for farming which is, at the same time, popular for tourism due to its high quality natural environment. This is a timely study as it is now over two decades since farm tourism was promoted through rural development policies as a way to support the farm household and revitalise rural economies. In the intervening years farm tourism has evolved and become a professional sector. It is therefore important to understand how the farm tourism sector has developed, and the impact that farm tourism has had on the farm household and wider rural economy. To date, there has been limited research in these areas. This PhD addresses these gaps. The study contributes to theory by examining farm tourism from Ploeg?s (2008) new peasantry perspective. It examines how peasant farming principles apply in the context of farm tourism development and operation in the early twenty-first century. The premise of the study is that the new peasantry?s struggle for increased autonomy is achieved through the development of their resource base. The literature review compares Ploeg?s (2008) new peasantry theory to other approaches examining farm development, most notably entrepreneurship. It outlines why the new peasantry is the most suitable theoretical approach to examining farm tourism. Ploeg?s (2008) theoretical framework is then adapted in order to specifically examine farm tourism. The research profiles the new peasantry in the context of farm tourism and finds that there are three significantly different groups operating farm tourism which benefit from it in different ways. These groups include diversifying farmers on larger and smaller farms, and lifestyle movers. The research identifies the resources that farm tourism operators have drawn upon in creating their farm tourism products. This provides an understanding of what the modern, multifunctional farm tourism product is, and in doing so broadens the definition of farm tourism. The research identifies four broad approaches taken to develop the farm tourism business facilities. These were based on whether the development approach followed, characterised peasant or capitalist behaviour, and whether or not growth was pursued. The research briefly examines market relationships, and finds that following a collaborative approach improves levels of trade. Finally, the research finds that, for the majority of operators, farm tourism has benefitted the farm household. The vast majority of operators report that farm tourism has been successful in achieving their overall goals, and that they plan to continue with farm tourism in the future. This suggests that farm tourism in Wales is a viable long term strategy. The research also finds that those taking advantage of farm tourism opportunities in the twenty-first century are those in a more favourable financial position. From a policy perspective, findings show that rural development support has played a key role in assisting farm tourism business start-up and growth. However, grants are only available to those who already have access to financial resources and do little to support the struggling farmer. At the same time policy challenges hinder the farm tourism sector in Wales, preventing it from achieving its full potential. Recommendations have been made to address these issues. The adapted new peasantry framework has proved suitable and has provided new insights into farm tourism. The framework examines farm tourism development as a process, and provides an understanding of how operators? contexts will affect their progression through the framework and the degrees of peasant or capitalist behaviour that they exhibit. When applying the model, it is also important to recognise how policy influences the development of farm tourism. Therefore, the application of the model would need to factor in the specific policy environment of the study location.

Rural tourism includes the characteristics of the regions, for example, the "Wine Road" in Pinhais-PR and "The Way of Stones" in Sierra Gaucho, demonstrating the specificity of each site. Under this assumption, this paper aims to analyze the family-based rural tourism in the city of Rio Preto da Eva-AM as a local development strategy from the National Program for Family Agriculture - PNTRAF. The attempt is given to verify that the adopted strategy will be able to contribute to the process of local development or rural in the state of Amazonas based on socioeconomic and environmental aspects as well as their suitability to the particularities of the Amazon region. Understanding that is an innovative action, and is therefore relevant to understanding the factors that involve the dynamics established between tourism and rural groups or organizations of small family farms. The rural tourism as an increase in the development process can set positive possibilities, such as generating employment and income, appreciation of natural and cultural landscape of the Amazon through the use of knowledge of rural people, family farmers.

Game ranching offers an economic alternative to conventional stock farming and is a means of supplementing income derived from agricultural activities. Competition is intensifying as ranchers continuously look for ways to improve and expand their businesses and gain a competitive advantage. Ranchers consequently have to find strategies that can ensure growth. Since a reciprocal relationship and dependency exists between a game ranch and the environment in which it operates, it is essential that ranchers take cognizance of aspects in the marketing environment that can either limit, and hence encumber the choice of growth strategy, or stimulate the growth potential of game ranches. As the objective of marketing is to offer customers superior value, it is pertinent for ranchers to know and understand the needs, requirements and motivations of visitors. Failure to do so will cause visitors to patronise other game ranches, or alternative tourism offerings that meet their expectations. A literature review was conducted to define strategy and assist in identifying growth strategies available to a game ranch. The literature review assisted in categorising elements in the external, internal and customer analysis phases of strategic marketing management. Surveys were conducted by means of self-completion questionnaires which were distributed throughout South Africa. Two sets of questionnaires were distributed - one to respondents with prior experience of a game ranch, and one to respondents with no-prior experience. A qualifying question directed the fieldworker to decide which questionnaire should be completed by the respondent. The surveys were constructed in such a way as to determine to what extent various factors would persuade respondents to visit a ranch or extend their stay. Based on a factor analysis, an eight factor structure emerged which represented the personal values of respondents and their levels of expectation for each of the factors. The eight factors were stimulation, universalism, tradition, security, hedonism, power, socialisation, and self-direction. The study revealed the following. - The majority of respondents with no-prior experience of a game ranch is either unaware of the offerings of game ranches, or perceives them as too expensive. - The sustainable use of natural resources is not only essential for the existence of a game ranch, but is also an important motivator for respondents to either visit a game ranch or extend their stay at a ranch. - Staff play a critical role in the overall experience of visitors and act as an important motivator to either visit/revisit a game ranch or extend their stay at the ranch. - Clean and comfortable overnight facilities are deemed important by all respondents. - Respondents have a strong desire to relax and spend time with family and friends. A decision-making framework from which game ranches can select applicable growth strategies resulted from the study. The decision-making framework comprises a three-phase process; phase 1 is the identification of a game ranch's target market; phase 2 is the use of a simplistic framework to determine a possible growth strategy for a game ranch; phase 3 is the identification of ways to implement the selected strategy. As the game ranch industry makes significant contributions to the economic, social and ecological welfare of South Africa, this study added to the body of knowledge of game ranching in South Africa, particularly with regard to the growth options available to game ranches. Recommendations for consideration of future research included the following. - As the current study investigated hunting and tourism, future research on growth strategies for game ranches could also include other aspects of game ranching such as the sale of live game and game products. - More focused empirical research into external and internal strategic analysis should be considered to supplement the empirical research into customer analysis resulting from the current study. - Finally, additional information obtained on the external and internal strategic analysis process could lead to expanding the decision-making framework developed in this study into a more holistic tool to be used in selecting a growth strategy, or combination of strategies for a game ranch3.

Streszczenie:
Rural Tourism is increasingly being used as a development strategy to improve the social and economic well being of rural areas. Rural Tourism encompasses a huge range of activities, natural or manmade attractions, amenities and facilities, transportation, marketing and information systems (Sharpley & Sharpley, 1997). Rural tourism is very diverse and fragmented in terms of operational structures, activities, markets and operating environments (Roberts & Hall, 2001, citing Pearce, 1989). Benefits of rural tourism have been expressed as employment growth and broadening a region’s economic base, repopulation, social improvement, and revitalization of local craft (Sharpley, 2000). Governments can play active roles in tourism. In short the literature suggests rural tourism development policy approaches require: regeneration/revitalization, horizontal and vertical integration, interdependence, stewardship/sustainability, mediation, cataclysm, service and welfare provisions, spatiality – awareness, intra and inter regional complementariness, opportunism, realism and quality (Roberts & Hall, 2001). Murphy (1985) proposed a community approach to tourism development which included formation of businesses networks, and the sharing of resources and information. For rural tourism to be successful, collaboration needs to exist amongst entrepreneurs (Wilson et al., 2001). Useful integrated approaches to rural studies include acknowledging the importance of locally controlled agendas to reach centralization, awareness of the benefits for shared ideas and funding developments, and creating appropriate tourism plans for rural areas (MacDonald & Jolliffe, 2003). There are numerous challenges when attempting rural tourism development: the total product package must be sufficient; significant investment may be required; there is the adaption to a service role; the quality of products and services and the availability of skills and resources for effective marketing (Sharpley, 2000). Tourism development requires attractions, promotion, infrastructure and services and hospitality (Wilson et al., 2001, citing Gunn, 1988). The remote Eastern Hokianga area is situated in the Far North (Northland) region of New Zealand. The area has a low population and is sparsely populated presenting an ideal place to relax with an unhurried atmosphere, flourishing fauna and flora, rich in New Zealand history and culture. This is an economically depressed area that is situated in the centre of Northland’s three key tourism icons - The Bay of Islands, the Waipoua Forest, and the top of the North Island. The location of the Eastern Hokianga presents an opportunity to create a tourism destination that will attract travellers frequenting the key tourism icons. To date there has been no research on rural tourism development conducted in the Eastern Hokianga. Although comprehensive research was conducted previously in the Hokianga by the James Henare Maori Research Centre (1999) it was concentrated specifically to the “Maori culture”. This research aims to examine and identify the key challenges of rural tourism development for the Eastern Hokianga through an analysis of rural tourism development approaches, and identifying the social and economic impacts of tourism. Key findings show that the Eastern Hokianga is an undeveloped area and does not fit with the majority of the rural tourism definitions as described in the literature. The area is displaying positive impacts of rural tourism development. The negative impacts are minimal as the Eastern Hokianga is still in the initial development stage of rural tourism. There are many integrated approaches to rural tourism development currently. A strategic approach is occurring with a tourism policy and community involvement in decision making. There is an integration approach with one RTO actively involved in the communities’ tourism association with the local businesses. Two key clustering approaches are being utilized – the Twin Coast Discovery Route and total product packaging. Regeneration is not occurring but was not an issue raised by the community, whereas a financing approach was an identified challenge by Eastern Hokianga businesses. The need to improve accessibility through infrastructure was the second key challenge to rural tourism development. The area was not restricted by the other challenges of government’s role, education / experience and marketing.

Rural tourism is considered one of the strategies that allow family farmers increase their income and the consequent improvement in their quality of life. Many studies handle this issue, but there is a gap in order to understand leisure from the perspective of farmers promoting tourism. This study sought to understand what is leisure and what are it practices from the family farmers's viewpoint who promote rural tourism in their properties in the municipality of Francisco Beltrão in the Southwest of Paraná. The research was the qualitative, descriptive and exploratory Character, sampling survey was non-probabilistic, with collection of data and information in five phases, being used as search strategies and tools, recorded interview based on the screenplay, semi-structured direct observation with field journaling and interview with semi-structured form, being tabulated data with Excel and Word 2013 2013 software, and presented as graphs and tables, and subsequently interpreted the light of theoretical review. The importance of tour offered by family farmers, more than the increased income, is related with significant moments of personal and social growth experienced by farmers in contact with tourists and with more interesting ways of working than agricultural activities. The leisure of the interviewed people has traits that demonstrate attachment to their way of life, considering aspects of their traditions, habits and customs, in relation to the family get-together, with the community in which they are inserted, in addition to the work and activities of the reproduction and to establish tourism activities, strengthen the construction of a rationality of resistance, where it operates at the same time an adaptive logic to assimilate external demands, and innovative to generate responses to enable the biological and social reproduction of the family.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is a critical ethnographic examination of the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) network in the Okanagan Valley. My research questions explore the motivations for farmer hosts and volunteer tourists to participate in WWOOF, and the outcomes of their participation. Based on my interpretations of the responses of the hosts and volunteers that I spoke with, as well as my own observations while visiting farms, I found that the contributions of WWOOFers on the farms in the Okanagan went beyond their helping hands or the learning opportunities implied by the arrangements being framed as work-learn farm visits. For hosts, labour needs were marginal compared to many other perceived benefits of hosting, with greater emphasis being placed on the benefits of having WWOOFers for the cultural exchanges, the opportunity to share their knowledge, and a desire to give back if they had WWOOFed themselves. Similarly, volunteers chose to WWOOF for various kinds of experiences the network offered outside of the aspect of learning about organic farming, primarily the idea that they were getting to know Canadians in a different way then other tourist experiences, as well as the benefits of immersion for learning English. Building on these findings, with a focus on both the ideological and practical elements of WWOOF, what I saw emerging were social economies that operated at the level of the farm, the host farm’s community, and at the broader level of the WWOOF network transnationally. The expansive organic consumer-base and infrastructural support already in place, such as farmers' markets, regulatory frameworks for production standards, and product availability in mainstream grocery stores have served the growing demand for organic foods. These structures, while criticized as diluting organic agriculture, could be utilized for implementing agendas that address issues of inequity in the food system. Considering these factors, I conclude my thesis with this proposal : that WWOOF, and the organic movement, have the potential to be powerful forces for greater social change and could be utilized to advance issues of social justice as they relate to food.

Now, experiential leisure activities have become the mainstream relaxation way. Among all the recreational places, leisure farms play an important role in peoples’ extra-curricular life. Farm tourism, which is a result of the diverse development of the agriculture, has been developed for many years in Taiwan and becomes improved gradually. It is essential to know the tourist market composition in order to achieve sustainable management of a high-quality leisure farm. It is believed by Frochot (2005) that market segmentation of tourists is indispensable for diversified industries. The aim of this research is to investigate the tourist market composition of farm tourism and set up market segmentation, and then develop a market strategy. The market segmentation is based on socioeconomic status and the importance of setting attributes, coupled with tourist motivation. We investigate 37 farms which are all passed ‘Service quality certification’ of Council of Agriculture by December 2016, analyzing the relationship between socioeconomic status, setting attributes reproducibility and tourist motivation as well as the differences between each segmental market. The questionnaire is used to collect data about farms. 466 effective questionnaires were collected and the results are as follows: For social background segmentation, we directly make the segmentation based on the question of the questionnaire. The results show that except for lace of residence segments, there exist significant differences for the importance of setting attributes and tourist motivation. For the part of setting attributes segmentation, we adopt the statistic approaches of factor analysis and cluster analysis. The tourists were divided into four segments. In each segment, significant differences can be seen in gender, age, occupation, disposable income, life cycle, educational level and tourist motivation. At last, discussing what marketing strategy should the managers of the leisure farms adopt when facing to different markets based on tourist market segmentation.

The meaning of a place results from accumulated interactions between an individual's life history and a setting. Place experiences often include some feeling of ownership. Ownership in this case is a psychological phenomenon that does not require legal title to a piece of land or a building, but rather, a sense that the person has some uncommon, special relationship with that particular setting. Although much of what characterizes a place may be very personal. Groups and even entire communities can develop place attachments. The objective of the study is the design of agri-tourism facilities within the realm of local community development. These facilities need to meet a variety of criteria to fulfil the expectations of the three main stakeholders, being agriculture, tourism and local community. A design that is context, and energy conscious, with a sympathy to existing ecological systems and self-sustainability, will determine the success of this project. The design, including before mentioned criteria, of an agri-tourism complex , incorporates local skills training which form part of the activities on the farm Madi A Thava, Makhado district in the Limpopo province. These facilities must meet the needs of the different clientele for each of the three entities. Each facility has its own identity arising from its specific function. The agri-tourism complex will have a dominant agricultural character, as this facility houses the main activity to ensure self-sustainability of the farm as a whole.

There is widespread recognition that tourism, one of one of the world's largest and fastest growing industries, must move towards sustainability by embracing a more balanced planning approach. This is especially true in developing countries where tourism is being aggressively promoted, often with limited attention given to the overarching socioeconomic, institutional and biophysical parameters. This thesis uses an innovative and promising approach for sustainable tourism planning based on multiple objective decision analysis (MODA). After reviewing contemporary challenges in tourism planning and identifying MODA's potential contributions, practical application of MOD A is tested in a case study of The Philippine Cooperative Farm Tourism Project: The Guimaras Pilot Project. MODA is a planning and decision method that draws from many disciplines including economics, psychology, operations research, negotiation theory and statistical decision theory. It is based on six fundamental steps: (1) defining the decision problem effectively; (2) establishing the planning context; (3) identifying relevant stakeholders; (4) eliciting and structuring a comprehensive set of objectives; (5) creating alternatives to achieve the stated objectives; and, (6) evaluating the alternatives against the objectives. This 'people based' approach seeks to clarify inherent value tradeoffs while promoting the development of alternatives that are more likely to appeal to stakeholder interests. The insight gained from the MODA process allows decision makers to make better informed and more defensible choices — choices that can responsibly address the difficult issues of sustainable tourism and are more likely to result in successful project implementation. Sub-methods are easily couched in the conceptual structure provided by MODA. One technique used extensively during field research in the Philippines was the elicitation and organization of objectives into a hierarchy, ranging from national policy to local values. By focusing on objectives, the analysis was able to identify, and begin to address, critical gaps in available information (i.e., local market conditions were established using market research techniques and capture rate theory). Field work was also supported by interviews (semistructured, open and informal) and participatory observation. These efforts laid the foundation for a 'farm tourism' planning workshop. The workshop participants, representing key stakeholder groups, infused critical local knowledge into the process and helped establish realistic planning constraints. Using the objectives hierarchy, the participants also undertook a qualitative and quantitative examination of objectives that provided a chance to reflect on community values and direct the focus of the Guimaras Farm Tourism Pilot Project (fortified later by statistical analysis). The insights gained were then used by the workshop participants to create and clarify a range of alternatives that culminated in a grassroots vision of 'farm tourism'. MODA systematically promoted an open, participatory process and established a framework for multi-sectoral integration; The resulting group-efforts overcame entrenched positions (e.g., the farm estate concept) while nurturing a sense of commitment necessary for effective project implementation. A five year period would allow for a staggered phasing of three alternatives: (1) Excursion Farm Tourism; (2) Barangay (Village) Farm Tourism; and, (2) Estate Farm Tourism. These alternatives would all be based on education, interpretation and host/guest interaction. All of the alternatives would benefit from the creation of exhibits, events, tours and festivals. These activities would be immediately initiated and evolve over the life of the project. Close monitoring and ongoing evaluation would be needed to adjust the project to changing needs of local communities. Although some of MODA's more technical aspects (e.g., statistical analysis of objectives) will probably not become a planning standard on Guimaras, many of MODA's core principals (e.g., relevant stakeholder inclusion) will continue to be an important part of the Guimaras Farm Tourism planning process. The success of this planning and decision making method on the rural island of Guimaras suggests that it is widely applicable, and therefore capable of contributing to sustainable tourism initiates in many planning contexts.

The purpose of this study is to construct a satisfaction model to predict tourist’s satisfaction in regards to consuming farm tourism service. A Taiwanese agricultural farm is chosen as a case study. A sample of 354 overseas Chinese groups is collected using face-to-face interviews. Singapore and Malaysia tourists are 208 as group 1, Hong Kong and Macao tourists are 146 as group 2. Manifests associated with three antecedent factors, including service quality, sacrifice and service value, are first tested using confirmatory factor analysis, followed by calibration of a structural equation model. Results suggest that service quality has a direct effect on service value, sacrifice has a negative effect on service value and service value has a direct effect on satisfaction. But the negative effect of sacrifice on service value is not supported in group 2. Interdependences between the three variables, notably the moderating effects of sacrifice, are also confirmed to better interpret service value. Finally, based on a factor loading analysis, a number of effective marketing strategies for farm tourism are discussed and proposed.

During the 70’s in Taiwan, as the economy was booming, most people were busy with their work and did not spend much time on sightseeing or tourism. But in recent years, because of the changes in industry and technology, machinery has gradually substituted for manpower. People’s earnings are higher and they have more available free time, resulting in the great popularity of rural tourism and amusement activities. Inevitably, there has been a tendency towards reforming agricultural management, especially after joining the World Trade Organization. Therefore, how to combine the development of sightseeing in villages and towns and amusement activities to fit into people’s lives has become a big topic. This evaluation framework for rural tourism is established by information collection and a questionnaire submitted to experts, and it is based on Xionglin Town in Xinzhu County as the main scope of research. Through the Delphi Method’s special questionnaire survey, we have received some suggestions and know what part needs to be improved. For Xionglin Town’s reference in developing sightseeing and amusement activities, we should take the necessary steps to improve them, in the hope that a high-quality leisure and convenient traveling environment can bring prosperity to the Xionglin Town area.

Abstract In order to solve the problems of rigid agriculture structure, languished rural economy, and the relatively low income of farmers in the progress of economic development, the development of leisure farm is becoming a trend. Tourism image can affect the willingness to revisit and recommendation behavior through the mediating effect of satisfaction. Accordingly, image, satisfaction and willingness to revisit are highly correlated. Wenshan Leisure Farm was taken as an example in this study to explore the tourism image and satisfaction of visitors toward the leisure farm. We hope that the relationship between tourism image and satisfaction can be understood and the findings of this study can be taken as the reference for related sectors for planning a leisure farm. Tourism image scale was adopted from Lin (1996), Chiou (2003), Lou (2006) and Huang (2006) and the 5-point Likert scale was used to measure tourism image of visitors. Satisfaction scale was adapted from Cheng (2005) and the 5-point Likert scale was used to measure satisfaction of visitors. Visitors of Wenshan leisure farm was invited to participate in this study. And in 2013, April 20 to April 28 to a total of 310 questionnaires were distributed and 306 usable questionnaires were achieved. Findings of this study revealed that quality, service and product image are the main factors affecting satisfaction. Quality is the most influential factor among these factors. It is thus suggested that Wenshan leisure farm should maintain current quality to serve its visitors. Furthermore, most of the visitors were university and above educated. It revealed that Wenshan leisure farm is more suitable for higher educated participants. Consequent researchers are suggested that satisfaction of shopping and dining should be collected to provide the farm operators as references. Furthermore, fireflies were not considered as the leisure resource in the previous studies. However, Wenshan leisure farm is one of the few farms that fireflies can be observable. Consequent researchers are suggested to collect the data of travel satisfaction that related to fireflies in coordination with the fireflies season. Streszczenie:
The marketing of farms for tourism and recreation purposes has been taking place for many years. Farmers have frequently sought to supplement their farm income through providing accommodation and recreation facilities to paying guests. This study concentrates on one state of Australia, Victoria, and has two main aims. The first aim is to develop a systems model of farm tourism that reveals the roles played by various stakeholders. The second aim is to examine farm tourism from a systems perspective, and to explore the attitudes of both farmers and guests to their experiences. In addition, the comments of local government authorities are also investigated. The purpose of the study, in broad terms, is to develop a systems model of farm tourism in Victoria, Australia. In order to do this, the study reviews the literature and then examines the evolution and development of farm tourism in general, through a detailed analysis of the relationships between host farm operators and their visitors. is hoped that the present study will shed some light on an industry which has been largely ignored by most writers and researchers in the different disciplines represented in this topic. The research objectives are, firstly, to develop a systems model of farm tourism; secondly, to examine and describe the scope of farm tourism in Victoria, from the point of view of the farmer; thirdly, to describe the evaluation of the farm tourism experience by the guests who have visited farms in Victoria; and, finally, to investigate the attitudes and involvement of local government bodies in Victoria to farm tourism. Tourism in general is examined, as well as the relationship between agriculture and tourism, leading to a discussion of the definition of rural tourism. General trends in rural tourism are identified, and their relevance to farm tourism is explained. The definition of farm tourism is then covered, with commentary on the application of the characteristics of tourism to the farm tourism industry. Trends in farming are mentioned, which point to the importance of farm tourism as an alternative source of income for the farmer, and a useful form of diversification from farm operations, reducing dependence on one source of income. The concepts of leisure and recreation are also considered, and their relevance to farm tourism is identified.

The purpose of this study is to use the Delphi method to establish the assessment framework to transform the traditional rural township villages for the development of eco-recreation. The established framework is used to assess the conditions of a rural township village for its transformation from its present state to the development of ecological recreation and tourism. Taomi and Fusing villages have been chosen to study in this research. The conditions for Taomi village to develop ecological recreation and tourism have been studied and the solving strategies for the problems it faces have been proposed. The framework has also applied to the Fusing village, a future site for the Lusan spring village. The problems for Fusing village to develop ecological recreation and tourism have been studied and the solving strategies have been proposed based on the experience from Taomi village. Taomi and Fusing villages have similar climatic conditions, but Fusing village falls far short of transportation convenience. Therefore, a widespread attention has been paid to Taomi village. A lot of funds and researches have been invested to make the local rich natural and cultural landscapes visible so as to attract tourists, encouraging its residents in doing community development. On the contrary, Fusing village, due to the fact that its marginalization has led to many natural and human resources yet to be developed and studied together with a slow start of its community development association and no support measures from the local government, will face more challenges for its transformation.

The leisure farm industry in Taiwan has experienced burgeoning development in recent years. Yilan County, in particular, is now the administrative area with the highest density of leisure farms. The 37 registered farms in the county have made significant economic contributions to the tourism industry. With the coaching efforts of the Yilan County Government, the township offices, and the regional farmers’ and fishermen’s associations, the leisure farm industry has become one of the most important tourism industries of the county. The purpose of this research is to understand the difference in recreational opportunities in terms of the distance between the leisure farms and the tourism resources. An analysis has been conducted, therefore, to identify the recreational opportunities of different leisure farms based on their distance with the tourism resources. Using the Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling and Cluster Analysis methodologies, the Research also tried to further probe the distribution type of these leisure farms with respect to their distance. Survey and information collection were made on different types of leisure farms in the Yilan County, as well as the relevant tourism resources including natural and cultural resources. The research results are: (1) The distance between the leisure farms and the tourism resources have been worked out using three measuring instruments. They were sorted based on the value of the distance, which reflected the size of the recreational opportunities. Shorter distance implies higher opportunity, and longer distance means lower opportunity. The opportunity spectrum acquired is as follows (from the lowest to the highest): Yilan City, Jiaoxi Township, Zhuangwei Township, Yuanshan Township, Wujie Township, Luodong Township, Sanxing Township, Datong Township, Dongshan Township, Toucheng Township, Su’ao Township and Nan’ao Township. (2) Through the cluster analysis method, the townships in Yilan County were further classified into three pre-defined groups according to the distribution of the leisure farms, i.e., discrete resource allocation, balanced resource allocation and cluster resource allocation. Su’ao Township is classified as being of the “Discrete Resource Allocation” type and Toucheng Township is of the “Balanced Resource Allocation” type. The “Cluster Resource Allocation” type, on the other hand, includes Yilan City, Jiaoxi township, Zhuangwei Township, Yuanshan Township, Sanxing Township, Datong Township, Wujie Township and Dongshan Township. (3) The sample points were displayed on the 2D perceptual maps using the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) method. The resource allocation within Yilan County was clearly displayed through the concept of “Reference Points.” The results are helpful for the planning personnel to grasp the correlation between the leisure farms and the tourism resources in Yilan County. To summarize, the research provides different opportunity spectrums for different groups of leisure farms, which can be consolidated for each township/city. It provides timely information on the recreational opportunities for leisure farms in different administrative areas, as well as a reasonable basis for planning and development in the future based on the pre-defined characteristics of each leisure farm. Yilan County is rich in natural landscapes and resources. Yilan County Government actively promotes the policy of Tourism Oriented County and encourages to develop recreational agriculture, which makes the number of Leisure Agricultural Regions ranks number one in Taiwan. With the integration of the traffic development into the tourism of leisure agriculture, Yilan County attracts more and more tourists for sightseeing. Due to prosperous industry/commerce and tight schedules nowadays, people’s diet tends to simplify and do not know how the food on the table is produced, which causes food safety problem. Food safety not only affects our health but also causes the reduction of demand in agriculture products. Thus, Taiwan has to depend on imported agriculture products that emit more carbon dioxide and increased food miles. Food miles are the transport distance of food from the farm site to the dining table, the above is the motive of the study. Therefore, Food and Agricultural Education emerges as the times require. Our country currently has many leisure farms cooperating with sightseeing that develop a series of DIY tours from the farm site to the dining table. First, the subjects in this research were the farmers of leisure farms in Yilan County approved by the official on Food and Agricultural Education tours in the Outreach Program of Food and Agricultural Education in 2017 proposed by Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan. Through literature review, this research organized five dimensions of tourism benefits which were respectively economic, social, psychological, physiological and educational benefits to design semi-structured questionnaires. Along with the in-depth interview method and analyzing transcripts by Nvivo for the nodes of tourism benefits in developing Food and Agricultural Education tours. The purpose of this research focuses on preliminary discussions of Chu-lu Recreation farm area residents’ perceptions for tourism industry functionality and tourism impact. Analysis and discussions are conducted based on the study results obtained. Residents of Chu-lu area, Pi-Nan Town, Taitung County are adopted as the study subjects. On-site observations, literature data collections, and in-depth conductions serve as the study methods in this research. The research result findings show that in terms of tourism functionality developments, residents perceive the natural sceneries for the recreation farm and the fresh mil as the main reasons that attract tourists. They believe that the road signs to the scenic spot should be clearly demonstrated and that other tourism locations should be incorporated into the transportation connecting points. There should also be large guide tour rooms inside the park area to illustrate the ecologies. In terms of tourism information, printed advertising materials and Internet marketing are provided. Also, local cultural features and agricultural product promotional activities should also be applied to attract crowds. It is found that tourism impact perception have positive effects on the economy such as increased employment opportunities for residents, increased income, and increased agricultural product sales. In terms of the social and cultural aspects, the positive and negative effects are not apparent. As for impacts on the physical environment, the effects are negative including added vehicular flow, traffic congestion, trash, environmental pollution, and obstructed transportation network to the outside making it inconvenient for residents and tourists. It is recommended in this research that proprietors hold values such as product brand reputation passed down from the predecessors and establish consumer loyalty. The governmental departments should also endeavor for community coherence, and local infrastructure expansion. It is suggested that tourists be incorporated in future studies. The fitness of the Future Behavior Intention framework was tested by using the“Confirmatory Factor Analysis”. At the end, the “Path Analysis” was used to explore the relationship between the tourism image, identity and future behavioural intentions. The results showed: (1)The concept and variables among tourism image, identity and future behavioral intentions has good convergent and discriminant validity, and the modified structure model by Bollen-stine reached the fit criteria (RMSEA = .02, GFI = .96, AGFI = .94, SRMR = .558, TLI = .99, IFI = .99, CFI = .99), and indicated the overall framework fit the data. (2)The direct effect of tourism image on identity is 0.8, on travel behavioral intentions is 0.31. The indirect effect of tourism image on travel behavioral is 0.36, and the overall effect is 0.67. The direct effect of identity on travel behavioral intentions is 0.45. The results show a striking effect of Cingjing Farm tourism image to identity and travel behavioral intentions, and identity to travel behavioral intentions is the second-high affect. Both theory and research inference hypothesis can be proved. Tourism image has a great effect on identity and travel behavioral intentions, and identity has a significant effect on travel behavioral intentions.
