Streszczenie:
It will be argued that, in order to understand particular exchanges between social workers and clients, it is essential to go beyond the view that sees them simply in terms of interaction between unique persons, and locate them within the wider discursive settings within which they occur. Most of the talk which takes place in these interviews concerns problematic issues within family life, particularly in terms of the relationships between parents and children. Behind these apparently mundane conversations lie agendas of social work issues which have been constructed historically with the rise of the caring professions. The early part of the thesis is concerned with uncovering the historically constructed norms of acceptable motherhood which underpin social work strategies with families and which help set the agendas of interviews. Then the analysis focuses on how general norms and objectives are translated into operational, professional techniques. This theme is carried forward through a focus on the social settings in which interviews take place, the building up of subject positions within interviews, for social worker and client, and the implications of translating from a predominantly oral to a literate based, professional mode of discourse. Finally, the analysis is concerned with the tentative attempts, marked by ambiguity and resistance, to go beyond the mere monitoring of the life of the client, and draw her/him into a form of discourse which is openly committed to social work aims, where the client seems to want to present his or her life problems in terms which are intelligible to, and manageable within, the strategies open to the social worker.

Streszczenie:
Coworkers can play an important role in helping each other overcome stressful circumstances (Beehr, Jex, Stacy, & Murray, 2000; LaRocco & Jones, 1978; Viswesvaran, Sanchez, & Fisher, 1999), yet work-family researchers have paid significantly less attention to coworker-provided support than they have to supervisor-provided support (Kossek, Pichler, Bodner, & Hammer, 2011). This thesis contributes to the occupational health literature by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of a novel construct termed work-family supportive coworker behavior (WFSCB) – defined as any supportive action that a coworker can take to contribute to the improved management of an individual’s work and family role demands. A phenomenological qualitative investigation revealed five categories of WFSCB that were tested using three quantitative samples to develop and validate a multidimensional measure. The findings indicated that four dimensions of behavior best reflect WFSCB including: 1) emotional support, 2) facilitating work adjustments, 3) sharing resources and knowledge, and 4) proactively developing solutions. In testing the criterion-related validity of the new measure, this research provides evidence of the positive relationship between these behaviors and various work-family outcomes, as higher levels of WFSCB were associated with lower levels of work-to-family conflict, and higher levels of work-family balance, work-family positive spillover, and overall life satisfaction. In addition, the utility of WFSCB as a source of informal workplace support was underscored based on evidence of its incremental validity in the prediction of these same outcome variables over and above a measure of general coworker support (i.e., emotional and instrumental support). Practically, these findings suggest that general measures of coworker support may fall short in assessing a broad spectrum of supportive coworker behaviors that can significantly contribute to improved work-family outcomes. Overall, the results of this research program will place scholars in a better position to provide prescriptive advice to organizations and employees on the behaviors that they can engage in towards one another to promote improved work-family integration for individuals and more broadly, to contribute to a work-family supportive organizational climate.

Streszczenie:
With dual-career couples and single-parent families on the rise, adults may find themselves overloaded with work and family responsibilities, resulting in the experience of work-family conflict (WFC). Further, employers appear to be demanding more from their employees, while giving less. Therefore, it is important to discover ways in which to manage the conflict between the work and family domains. Since level of involvement within a particular domain has been previously demonstrated to have a positive effect on WFC, the present study examined the possible moderating effects of social support on the relationship between work and family involvement and WFC. Surveys assessing work and family issues and dependent care needs were distributed to a random sample of university faculty, staff, and students. Since WFC was a focus of the present study, surveys from those respondents who met the following criteria were analyzed: a) those who worked more than 20 hours per week, and b) those who had either a partner or a child, resulting in a sample size of 203. Based upon factor analyses results, social support and WFC were addressed in terms of their subscales. Specifically, social support was assessed from three sources: a) partner; b) supervisor/co-workers; and c) friends/relatives. WFC was assessed as work interference with family (WIF) and family interference with work (FIW) . Multiple hierarchical regression analyses indicated that family involvement was a significant predictor of both WIF and FIW, however, work involvement did not appear to have a positive effect on either type of WFC. Buffering effects of social support from all three sources were demonstrated for the relationship between family involvement and FIW. Additionally, social support from partner and from supervisor/co-workers moderated the relationship between work involvement and FIW. Further, social support from supervisor/co-workers moderated the relationship between family involvement and WIF. Finally, gender did not appear to have a significant effect on the buffering effects of social support. Limitations of the present study and future research implications are discussed.

Streszczenie:
The current study investigated family, individual and sibling relationship variables of adult sibling loss, using a cross-sectional survey design. A purposive sampling procedure was used to recruit adult subjects that had experienced the death of an adult sibling within the last five years. Ninety-four subjects responded to the initial request with 84 subjects returning questionnaires for an 89% response rate. Family variables of communication, cohesion, and adaptability and individual variables of individuation, self esteem as well as level of grief were operationalized using standardized instruments through a mailed questionnaire. It was predicted that significant relationships would be found between family variables and current level of grief. It was also predicted that individual characteristics (individuation, self esteem, church attendance, and cause of death) would be significantly related to the level of grief. Characteristics of the sibling relationship (frequency of contact, communication, perceived emotional closeness, geographical proximity, age differential and same sex) were predicted to reveal significant relationships. Bivariate analysis yielded support for only four of the sixteen hypotheses. No family variables were related to the subjects’ level of grief at the time of the survey. The individual characteristics of individuation, self esteem and church attendance were all significantly related to the level of grief. Support was also found for the sibling relationship variable of geographical proximity with level of grief. Multivariate regression analysis was used in testing two models that investigated demographic, family, individual and sibling relationship variables with current level of grief. The first model included all variables that were statistically significant at the bivariate level and relevant demographic variables. In addition, the level of grief at death and the amount of time since death were included in the model. The level of grief at death was the strongest predictor of current level of grief. The first model explained 61.7% of the variability of current level of grief. The second model selected those variables that had significant t-values from the first model. The level of emotional involvement was the strongest predictor of the level of grief at death. This model explained 58% of the variability of current level of grief. The level of grief at death was the strongest predictor of the current level of grief in both models.

Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT The purpose of this research study on family stabilization is to identify whether this program is working while CalWORKs participants are achieving their educational goals. Family stabilization is a county program that assists those who need supportive services in domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness. The first phase was to assess the participant’s knowledge and understanding of the family stabilization program. The second phase involved a focus group, who could express their questions or concerns regarding the family stabilization program. The final stage was to review and interpret the information provided, in hopes to clarify the participants understanding of the family stabilization program is and the services that are available. Results of this study could not answer the proposed research question, Family Stabilization: Does it Work? There was a lack of significance regrading knowledge of the family stabilization program from the CalWORKs participants. This study does show that communication between the participants and the county offices needs improvement; especially on the availability of programs. The weakness pertained to the sample size and duration of the research project. I do find the research as creditable due to the personal interviews pertaining to their understanding of family stabilization. To completely understand how this research project was conducted and analyzed, readers need a fairly refined knowledge of social science research methods.

Streszczenie:
The relationships between work and personal life have been on the public, business, and research agenda for about 35 years. Perspectives on these relationships have shifted from a work-family to work-life or work-personal life focus, from a conflict to a balance or enrichment view and, finally, from a segmentation to an integration perspective. This evolution, however, leads to a theoretical and practical impasse where neither integration nor segmentation can be seen as the absolute individual, organisational and societal value. This thesis takes the discussion one step further and focuses on individuals’ work/non-work experiences, calling for a humanistic case. The humanistic case urges placing individuals’ work/non-work experiences at the centre of human resources and at the centre of the work-life field. The aim of the thesis is to theorise individuals’ work/non-work experiences in their individual, organisational and societal contexts. To achieve the purpose, the thesis presents individuals’ work/non-work self-narratives. These self-narratives of six French middle-managers, three men and three women, underline how individuals experience their diverse life domains, namely the work, the family, the social and the private and their management. The self-narratives have been generated through in-depth qualitative interviews and diaries. The thesis explores and provides an understanding of individuals’ work/non-work experiences from a boundary perspective. Focusing on the processes behind individuals’ work/non-work experiences, the thesis reveals that work/non-work preferences for integration and/or segmentation are not sufficient to understand individuals’ experiences. It is essential to consider the preferences in relation to their level of explicitness and the development of work/non-work self-identity. Moreover, it is important to understand the roles of positive and negative work/non-work emotions emerging in the work/non-work process as a respective signal of individuals’ satisfaction or dissatisfaction in how their life domains are developed and managed. The thesis contributes to the work-life field, especially the boundary perspective on work and non-work by presenting a model of individuals’ work/non-work experiences. The model pursued is derived from 33 theoretical propositions. The study suggests a two-dimensional approach for life domain boundaries as a systematic combination of seven boundary types (spatial, temporal, human, cognitive, behavioural, emotional and psychosomatic) and their mental and concrete natures. It suggests a three-dimensional model for work/non-work preferences, revealing five major archetypes of work/non-work preferences between segmentation and integration, and stressing the emotional side of the work/non-work process. It shows that individuals value segmentation on a daily basis and integration on a long-term. This thesis concludes that segmenting and integrating is essential for the harmony of their life domains namely their work, their family, their social and their private.

Streszczenie:
Thesis advisor: Eric Dearing
Recent decades have seen historic increases in maternal employment. The developmental implications of work-family conflict, however, remain poorly understood. Children's (n= 1,364) social-emotional problems through early childhood and pre-adolescence were examined as a function of mother's work-family conflict using longitudinal data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (NICHD SECCYD). Hierarchical linear modeling techniques were utilized to examine the lagged and contemporaneous associations between work-family conflict and children's social-emotional outcomes (i.e., internalizing and externalizing problems). Furthermore, family stress processes--maternal depression and maternal sensitivity--were examined as mediators of the associations between work-family conflict and social-emotional outcomes. Developmental timing of work-family conflict (i.e., child age) was also examined as a moderator of associations between conflict and social-emotional growth. Results indicated that within-family changes in work-family conflict predicted later within-child changes in children's internalizing problems in lagged models. With regard to between-family differences, average work-family conflict was associated with both average levels of internalizing and externalizing problems. Maternal depression and maternal sensitivity mediated the association between work-family conflict and children's externalizing problems between-families; maternal depression mediated the association between work-family conflict and children's internalizing problems between-families. There was little evidence to suggest, however, that the effects of work-family conflict differed as a function of developmental timing. Results from this research suggest that the developmental consequences of work-family conflict may not be immediate, but rather accrue over time. Moreover, results indicate that the effects of work-family conflict are both direct and indirect via family stress processes. These findings are further discussed regarding their implications for developmental research, policy and practice

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a deeper understanding of a Family Treatment Drug Court (FTDC) Program in a Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) office by exploring staff experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 staff who were currently working or had previously worked in the program.

Sobriety, reunification and parental insight were identified as the main goals of the FTDC program. Informal hearings, ongoing communication and collaboration were fundamental strategies utilized by the FTDC staff to promote desired outcomes. Reunification, recidivism, program completion and client changes were positive outcomes highlighted by the participants.

The research found elements of the FTDC program that can be adopted as best practices, as well as areas of improvement to better support families dealing with substance use issues in child welfare. Future legislation should consider adequately funding additional FTDC programs to make them more widely available.

Analysing the data from a web-based survey distributed across Australia (n=379) suggested OSN is a predictor of work-family conflict.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this research project was to examine the impact of direct work on practitioners in the field of statutory child protection. The author’s premise was that this work was anything but straightforward and that surprisingly, given the intense scrutiny on Children’s Services following a child death, there was little research into the day-to-day practice of front line staff. The aim was to explore whether psychoanalytic theory could be useful in understanding and making sense of the social work task. Data was collected through observation and semi-structured interviews in one Local Authority Child in Need team over a period of six months. The findings indicated that practitioners experienced direct work with some individuals and families as profoundly disturbing and that this affected them physiologically as well as psychologically. These effects persisted over time and appeared very difficult for the workers to process or articulate. This could be expressed through embodied or non-verbal communication in the interview. Practitioners appeared to be ‘inhabited’ by particular clients, suggesting phenomena such as projective identification were in operation. The intensity and persistence of the impact on the practitioners appears to be directly related to the quality, nature and intensity of the psychic defences functioning for the particular client. Significantly, the research indicated that when practitioners were dealing with the negative and disturbing projections from the (adult) clients it seemed from the data that the focus on the child would slip so that the child appeared to recede from view. Symptoms experienced by the practitioners were akin to trauma and research and theory on primary and secondary trauma were considered. Other issues raised included shame, which affects the clients, practitioners and the organisation and the meaning and implications of this are explored. Links between neuroscience and projective identification are addressed as well as the role of the organisation, particularly as a container for these toxic and disturbing encounters.

Streszczenie:
Research has shown that being in a romantic relationship has related negatively with work-family conflict. Using social exchange theory, the investment model, and role theory, this study examined the relationships among the dimensions of perceived partner support, romantic relationship interdependence, and work-family conflict. A sample of 192 adults in paid employment, currently involved in a romantic relationship, were recruited from SurveyMonkey Contribute. Study participants completed online a demographic survey, the revised Support in Intimate Relationships Rating Scale (SIRRS), the Investment Model Scale, and work-family conflict scales. Correlation analyses showed that work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict correlated negatively with commitment and positively with quality of alternatives as hypothesized. As hypothesized, regression analyses showed that quality of alternatives and informational support explained unique variance in work-to-family conflict and family-to-work conflict and that commitment explained unique variance in family-to-work conflict. PROCESS mediation analyses showed partial support for the hypothesis of mediation. Quality of alternatives and commitment mediated the relationships between esteem/emotional support and family-to-work conflict and instrumental/tangible support and family-to-work conflict. Quality of alternatives mediated the relationships between informational support and work-to-family conflict, informational support and family-to-work conflict, and instrumental/tangible support and work-to-family conflict. The findings contribute to positive social change by offering added knowledge about the occurrence of work-family issues in the lives of employees representing a large percentage of the workforce.

The purpose of this thesis project was to locate funding and write a grant proposal to provide a weekend-long social support/parent education retreat to parents and families of children with co-occurring conditions associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The goal of this parent-family retreat is to reduce perceived parental stress levels, which will benefit the well-being of all members within a family unit and improve parent self-efficacy. An extensive literature review was performed to investigate the best way to provide parents with a deeper understanding of co-occurring disorders and the importance of taking a holistic approach to supporting their child and/or children. Additionally, foundations were researched for possible funding opportunities and the W.M. Keck Foundation was selected as the best potential funding source. A grant proposal narrative was then written for REACH, a non-profit in Santa Fe Springs, California. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not a requirement for the completion of this project.

Streszczenie:
Social workers working for adult protective services (APS) face many clinical challenges to ensure the safety and well-being of older adult clients. APS social workers often interact with older adults who engage in self-neglecting behaviors that compromise their ability to function in a healthy and independent manner. The purpose of this research study was to explore challenges in direct social work practice to identify how APS services can be improved when working with the older adult population, particularly individuals who engage in hoarding behaviors. Using action research methodology, 2 focus groups were conducted to explore the experiences and knowledge of social workers who are trained in APS and in-home supportive services programs and work directly with the older adult hoarding population when investigating cases of self-neglect. The theoretical framework of cognitive behavioral theory guided the analysis of focus group data to provide insights into understanding the core manifestations of hoarding and how social workers working with this population can provide appropriate services. The overall findings of the study resulted in identifying improvements to APS service interventions. Study findings inform recommendations that allow APS social workers to effectively work with older adults who exhibit hoarding behaviors, while also advancing professional development in the field of social work. Understanding practice challenges to appropriately serve older adults that exhibit hoarding behaviors is essential in effecting positive social change in the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged older adults, APS agencies, and communities.

The purpose of the project was to locate a potential funding source and write a grant to design a family-based treatment program for at-risk and economically disadvantaged adolescents and their families who face substance use problems. A search was conducted to locate an appropriate funder for psychoeducation and family-based treatment services for adolescents and their families in the South Bay area in Los Angeles County. A literature review was performed to investigate the effective ways to assist and psychoeducate adolescents and their families on risk factors and protective factors associated with substance use. In addition, previous literature was reviewed to explore existing interventions that treat adolescent substance dependence.

If funded, the proposed program would provide adolescents and their families psychoeducation to decrease or ameliorate their substance use to prevent potential serious problems and develop coping skills needed to manage daily life challenges. Equally important, it is hoped that parents of these adolescents would also gain skills to support their children's efforts to avoid future substance use. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

The overall objective of this study is to investigate family factors in adolescent substance—abuse and the significance of family therapy as part of adolescent substance—abuse treatment. The proposal underlying the study was that adolescents who received structurally-oriented individual-family therapy during inpatient substance—abuse treatment would demonstrate a higher level of functioning on several variables than adolescents who did not receive this type of therapy. A static group comparison design was used in the study. The adolescents’ level of functioning was defined in terms of the following variables: (a) self esteem, (b) depression and (C) attitudes towards family. A questionnaire was administered to adolescents in clinical and community settings. The results of the study indicated a direct and positive association between structurally-oriented individual-family therapy and a higher level of functioning.

Streszczenie:
Using a phenomenological approach, this study, "Killing Ostriches" sought to investigate the experience of violence in the home of a small group of young women living in the northern suburbs of Perth. Seven young women between the ages of 17-26 took part in the study. Five of these young women claimed to have experienced violence in their family of origin and the: remaining two, introduced for triangulation purposes, claimed not to have done so. The study sought, not only to explore the lived experience of violence in the home for these young women, but to also investigate their experience of youth work practice. Accounts of family violence provided indicate the significance and meaning of family violence for participants. What the study was not able to do is to provide accounts of aspects of youth work practice perceived as beneficial or detrimental by the young women involved in the study as none of them were aware of the availability of youth workers. They were unaware of other supports available to them and were also scared that if anyone found out, their situation would become intolerable. Each of these women chose not to disclose to anyone outside their immediate environment. For some of these young women I was the first person to whom they had disclosed much of their story. The study provides a better understanding of why it is that young women who have experienced violence in their family of origin do not disclose to others who might be in a position to support them and possibly stop the violence. The young women in this study were isolated from their peers and any support mechanisms that might have been available to them. The study, therefore, provides further insight into why it is that young women living in a violent environment choose to remain silent thereby maintaining the isolation associated with family violence. What is clear is that young women who have experienced violence, no matter what form that violence might have taken or where it is placed on the continuum of violence, have a need to discuss their experience with an individual they feel confident will support them according to their needs. What is also clear is that these particular young women were not aware of anyone who might fill this role. The literature shows the importance of identifying at least one attachment figure as early as possible in life, with whom a secure attachment may be developed. The women in this study have greater awareness of the issues involved in family violence than do many youth workers and other professionals to whom they might realistically go for help. What this study has shown is that there is need for further research based on the needs and experience of women, such as those involved in this study, to effectively answer the original research subquestion relating to youth work practice. It also suggests that youth work practioners should be involved in such research.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of San Bernardino County’s Family Visitation Centers (FVC) and their effect on improving rates of reunification in families that use the visit centers, as opposed to those families who do not use the visit centers. The FVC were developed out of the Department Human Services Redesign to enhance the visitation experience for families, staff and others involved in the process. The FVC centers are a place to provide safe visits, in a non-sterile environment, for children to maintain the bonds with their parents that they have been removed from by child welfare while in a reunification process. The County of San Bernardino has invested approximately 1.9 million dollars annually into the FVC’s, and to date, there has not been a clear evaluation as to the effectiveness in reunifying families faster with usage of the FVC. The researchers used a descriptive statistical approach to examine the effect FVC’s has on the reunification process. The research methods used were quantitative in design and included comparative research, looking both at the results of clients use and non-use of the FVC’s. Data was collected February 2017. The size of our sample was ninety cases that used the FVC, and ninety families that did not use the center in the same regions, but were participating in visits and in reunification services, 180 families in total. To ensure that a random sample was used, a third-party person collected statistical information from Case Management System/Child Welfare System (CMS/CWS). The list was composed from preselected data included in the San Bernardino County Visitation Center Instrument. The variables used included families that were in the reunification process and having visits either at a CFS office or at the FVC, primary and secondary reason for removal, age of youngest child, age of parent, race/ethnicity, if a visit occurred and number of months in placement. Data was collected using every fifth family was selected, the researchers received a list, with only the above pertinent information for each of the families. The researchers did not need any Protected Identifying Information (PII) and no human subjects were used. All items related to the research was maintained in electronic form on password protected computers and was only calculated and read in a protected area. The hope of this research project was to find out if the money being invested in the FVC was working toward returning children in shorter time frames, than the traditional way of handling visits within the county at the CFS offices. Results from this study could change things dramatically within CFS. Positive outcomes could allow for more outside contracted agencies to be used to promote faster reunification, while lightening the duties of the social worker. Negative results could result in the FVC losing funding, the department would go back to supervising the visits within the offices, many social worker hours would be used supervising visits, the visit could be affected by the presence of the social worker. The outcomes could change business on a daily basis for the department or FVC in that, adjustments may need to be made, and provide a different standard of ideology of what visitation should be for families that are trying to work through their case plans to reunify with their children. This study found families who used visitation centers had longer placement episodes lengths than non-visitation center users. This outcome is contrary to our assumption, use of visitation centers help families reunify in less time

Although social workers are frequently part of interdisciplinary teams in health care and community settings, interdisciplinary training is often lacking in social work education (Berg-Weger & Schneider, 1998). This article describes a study of the effects of an interdisciplinary community-based experiential course preparing new health care professionals for work as part of interdisciplinary teams. The interdisciplinary curriculum was established for a summer course taught in 2006 by faculty from five disciplines: social work, nutrition, medicine, nursing, and public health. The course, Quality Improvement in Rural Healthcare, which focused on health literacy in people with a diagnosis of diabetes that live in northeast Tennessee, provided a model environment for learning interdisciplinary teamwork. Evaluation of this course found that social work students displayed a statistically significant increase in positive attitude toward interdisciplinary teamwork. Course strengths, weaknesses, obstacles, and opportunities for curriculum improvement are elaborated.

The Resource Family Approval (RFA) program replaces the current pathways for approving, certifying, or licensing relatives and foster families in California and creates a single process for assessing and approving caregivers for children, youth, and non-minor dependents under the supervision of child welfare or probation systems. Five counties comprise the first cohort of RFA early implementers, three of which participated in this research: San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Clara. The purpose of the study was to examine the RFA program through qualitative interviews with county representatives to identify themes and lay a foundation for future research. All three participants reported fewer complaints against resource families and improved placement stability, preliminary indicators that RFA is achieving improvements in child safety, permanence, and well-being. This research provides qualitative support for the RFA program’s impact on child welfare outcomes as well as guidance to counties planning for statewide implementation.

This qualitative study explores family resilience in response to extrafamilial child sexual abuse. Family resilience refers to the adaptive pathway along which a family journeys in response to a significant stressor. The theory on family resilience proposes that protective family factors and processes serve to mediate the impact of trauma on a family. A gap was found in the literature in the area of family resilience relating to child sexual abuse and theoretical research conducted as part of this study aims to contribute to this area. The research study adopts a strengths perspective which views families as challenged rather than dysfunctional.

The individual's ability to balance between family and work depends on social support from the individual's environment. Social support has been shown to be an important source for an individual's well-being. The purpose of this study was to study Family-to-Work Conflict (FWC) in Sweden in order to discover: which preferences have participants regarding the sources of social support during the FWC: society, family, work? A questionnaire based on the WAFCS scale was answered by 350 participants between 18-65 years who were living in Sweden, of whom 172 women. Participants reported a low level of FWC, partly explained by their life priorities and social support from the society. Despite this they did not consider society as a primary source of support. Results showed that the family is no longer a single cause for the FWC but accepted by the participants as an important supportive source. During the study gender and age-related differences were also found.

Cancer is a growing health problem in the United States with family caregivers serving as the primary care providers of cancer patients. Research shows that family caregivers of adult cancer patients tend to experience adverse mental health effects because of their caregiving role. The proposed program, entitled the Healthy Caregiver will provide services in English and Spanish, offering group therapy support and information referrals to family caregivers of adult cancer patients. Using a cognitive behavioral therapy approach, the overarching goal of the program will be to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety associated with the burden of caregiving. The proposed program will be hosted at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, California. Funding options were explored and the Annenberg Foundation was identified as the best potential funder for this project. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant proposal were not requirements for the successful completion of this project.

Streszczenie:
Resource Family Approval (RFA) is a policy that was recently enacted in California. The process seeks to merge existing policies on the regulations of families who wish to care for children involved in the foster care system. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of resource family approval social workers and the implementation of RFA. Ten participants were chosen from the resource family approval unit from a county child welfare agency. The study was a qualitative design with in person interviews. Common themes emerged in responses to social worker's thoughts about RFA, social worker's ideas for preparing other workers, families and the agency, and advice to new workers in RFA. The study found that participants had mixed responses regarding their own thoughts about RFA. The majority of the participants in the study felt that RFA was good in theory but not in execution. The study also revealed that RFA workers needed to be open-minded and focus on communicating with all parties involved in RFA. One of the recommendations is for policy makers to assess the effectiveness of the policy before enacting changes and give the policy time to work itself out before trying to change things so often. Another recommendation is that it is critical to offer ongoing trainings to both the workers and the families for RFA to be implemented and run smoothly and effectively within the community.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this research is to present empirical evidence on the effects of framing the business commitment to work-family life issues as a corporate social responsibility. Some authors (Pitt-Catsouphes and Googins, 2004, Goodstein, 1994b) have already claimed the need for recasting the work-family agenda as a corporate social responsibility, by considering employees and their families as a social concern fundamental for sustainability. However further research is missing. The core of this research is the confrontation and cross-analysis of both arenas and literatures. The research consisted of a national cross-sectional study based on a set of twelve medium-large Portuguese firms, aggregated in four clusters grouped by economic activity: Banking and Financial Services, Wholesale and Retail, Transport and Utilities Services. Different research methods were used: a survey and in-depth semi-structured interviews. The survey was answered by the human resources managers and 2472 employees. Sixty interviews were performed. The triangulation of different perspectives and research methods enhanced the study with insightful conclusions. The analysis situated the firms according to their work-family life policies, culture and corporate social responsibility approaches, in a general map describing the panorama regarding the way firms consider their role in society (Garriga and Mele, 2004). In line with the literature, the study also assessed that a gap existing between the institutional perspective and the employees’ perception of the value and accessibility of work-family initiatives and an organization’s overall family-supportiveness (e.g. Parker and Allen, 2001, Allen, 2001, O'Driscoll et al., 2003). The research revealed that there is a relationship between the organization and employees’ perceptions gap and the alignment (or misalignment) between the approaches to both fields: work-family practices and corporate social responsibility. Whereas inconsistency between both approaches was detrimental for the perception of the employees, regarding organizational supportiveness alignment between them proved to reinforce perceptions regarding initiatives in both fields. By establishing the bridge between these two normally separately studied themes, the research opens doors to new directions of work. It also confirms the importance of a holistic view of the organization and its role towards its people and society.

Streszczenie:
Family members are themselves affected by the impact of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) upon their relatives and they play an important role in the rehabilitation and long term support required. The study aims to understand how families are impacted and their views on the formal and informal support received directly or indirectly as a consequence of the ABI. To date there has been very little research undertaken by social workers in relation to ABI and/or the experience of family members. A mixed methods research design was employed to capture the lived experience of family members of people with ABI. The results of the quantitative and qualitative data were triangulated against the literature. An online survey was completed by 110 relatives of people with an ABI, seeking their experience of the condition, its impact upon their lives and their views of services. The results of the survey were collated and organised in SPSS (version 24). Non-parametric Spearman's Rho Correlations (non-parametric test) were performed upon the results. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 family members of people with severe ABI to ascertain the family members' experience of their relatives' condition, its impact upon them and their views of the associated formal and informal support received. Inductive thematic analysis of the transcribed interview data was undertaken to identify themes. The quantitative element of the research identified strong correlations between the relative's assessment of the invisible impairments suffered by those with an ABI (cognitive, executive, behavioural and emotional difficulties) and lack of insight. This correlation was not present in relation to physical impairment. It was observed that increased loss of insight and behavioural difficulties were strongly correlated with loss of friendships by the non-injured family member. The results of the inductive thematic analysis identified 7 themes which were: 1: The Context 2: The All-Encompassing Challenge 3: Family Loss and Grief 4: The Unavoidable Burden 5: The Poor Experience of Support 6: Positive Support and Change 7: The Curator of Narrative The research identified that family members' experience is complex and enduring, encompassing most aspects of life, and is affected by the context in which it occurs as well as by formal and informal support structures. The particular nature of the grief and loss experienced by families is ambiguous, develops over time and leads to ambivalent feelings for family members who perceive no option but to remain involved. Informal and formal support frequently fails to take account of the reality and complexity of the condition and fails to integrate the relative by recognising their own losses and trauma. Relatives' views on the services received identified significant gaps in practitioner knowledge, most especially of those aspects of life that were of most concern to them, the invisible impairments and issues with insight. Practitioners that were valued were more likely to be specialists in the condition and practiced as “expert companions” supporting the relative to develop a new “neuro-narrative” to reconstruct their identity in the face of their ongoing grief. The specific nature of the condition requires such an approach if input is to be effective. Greater understanding of the complex lived experience of family members may support more effective responses to both them and the individual with ABI, integrating services and families to improve quality-of-life. As ABI is a process with changes to functioning developing over time, the information and knowledge required by loving and supportive relatives needs to be created with them, being person-, family-, injury-and-context-specific.

The purpose of this study was to see how parents or guardians cope and adapt to their mentally ill relatives. Primarily, the study set out to identify coping and adaptive behavioral skills that will allow the parents of the mentally ill to better cope and adapt. It also set out to identify specific variables strongly associated with the conditions sampled, they were the family structure, isolation, loneliness, shame, anxiety, fear, psychotic behavior, lack of understanding, anger, quilt, sympathy, compassion, ambivalence, community support and educational approach. The literature reviewed for this study revealed a number of studies that were mostly dealing with the coping and adaptive skills that will help parents to deal with their mentally ill relatives. The purpose was to explore the real life situations that families of the mentally ill have to endure while working with their mentally ill relative. Further, to determine other circumstances that contribute to the coping and adaption skills of these families. Forty-seven families participated in the study. The purpose of the survey was to measure the involvement that many families have with their mentally ill relative and how they cope and adapt with their behavior. The finding of the study seem to indicate no significant difference between the variables. However, many of the families could not cope with the behavior of their mentally ill relative. Direction for future research should include longitudinal studies concerning this topic and this population.

This study investigated the relationship of unemployment, family support, and mental disorder to the recidivism of incarcerated females in a Georgia State Prison. The research hypothesis of the study was: unemployment, family support and mental disorder are significantly related to the recidivism of incarcerated females in a Georgia State prison. Two hundred and seventy-two female prisoners, consisting of randomly selected first-time and repeat offenders, participated in the study. The questionnaire used in the survey had three sections with a total of forty-six questions. Professional counselors, under the supervision of the researcher, administered the questionnaire to the participants. The statistical procedures used to describe and analyze the data included descriptive measures, correlation analysis and the chi-squared distribution. The findings of the study indicated that the three variables: unemployment, family support and mental disorder are significantly and highly correlated with recidivism.
