Streszczenie:

The following paper looks into Maternity\Paternity leave and how the parents make use of it. The underlying reasons for the paper, is a pattern of unequal division of leave between the mother and father.

By using a qualitative in depth interview technique with couples that have children between 2 and 3 years old we have looked for reasons why the decisions, around the division of leave, have been taken, and what factors influence the outcome.

We have found that great importance is attached to, how, the negotiations are carried out between the parents, although these negotiations are influenced by a series of circumstances where the families economic situation influenced by the employment market are important factors.

The results from the empiric part of the study showed a link between the childs age and which parent stayed home.

Furthermore, the results show the families place in relationship to the structure of society also plays an important part in the concluding division of leave.

Participation of diverse families in familial needs studies, assist in understanding and comparing their descriptive account of their families and experiences today. This descriptive study compared traditional and non-traditional families of public officials with a focus on (1) form and income, (2) familial needs as per key propositions, (3) families perceptions/experiences at community and broader societal levels and (4) familial needs government must assist them with. The study was contextualized within a contemporary family discourse. It was primarily influenced by a feminist perspective as well as a critique of the nuclear or traditional family grounded in functionalist theory. The public official, as focus, was framed in a human rights and an employee assistance policy discourse influenced by the South African public service context. The study used a quantitative research paradigm, whereby a survey was implemented. The survey was administered to 600 public officials and culminated in a final sample of 70 participants. The study indicated that public officials, as members of families, live in both traditional and non-traditional families. Public officials have familial needs similar to any other family and are also influenced by similar factors in broader society. As both rights holders and duty bearers they can improve their own family lives and also serve families in broader society better. However they too need to be supported with their own family needs. Public officials suggested the areas in which they needed help from the Provincial Government of the Western Cape.

The study explored families' experiences of Mentalization Based Treatment for Families (MBT-F), using a qualitative approach. Five families, five parents and four children, who attended MBT-F at a single Child and Family Service (CFS) were interviewed post-therapy using a semi-structured interview schedule developed for the study. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA; Smith, Jarman and Osborn, 1999), which aims to systematically explore an individual's perception of an event, was used to explore the participants' experience of MBT-F. Rich descriptions of the individual participants' experiences were gained and themes for the parents and the young people were then identified. These highlighted both similarities and differences within and between participants. The findings increased understanding of how families experience MBT-F and therefore made a contribution to the evaluation and further development of the therapy. Clinical implications were discussed and further research suggested.

Streszczenie:
As we move into the new millennium, computers will increasingly become part of the human culture. As such, computers will continue to effect families, and there will undoubtedly be a proliferation of computer usage across family types. Because computers will be an integral part of change in the next millennium, it is important to examine their potential impact on the basic unit of society- the family. This study, descriptive in nature, provides insight on families and their interactions as related to computer use in their homes. Better understanding of computers and family life can help provide the basis for a smoother transition for families into the expanding world of information technology. As the expansion of the digital age proceeds, its impact on family life would seem to warrant investigation. Information on who is using computers in the home, how those computers are being used, and how time is spent on computers can add to our appreciation of the impact of computer technology. In addition, the perceived impact of computers needs to be assessed in relation to outcomes for family life- interaction, relationships, and familial organization.

Streszczenie:
Studies on mixed race and/or ethnicity families have tended to focus on the child’s struggle with identity. Although this topic is very important, in order to better understand how mixed families function as a whole, and how mixed children are socialised, my thesis explored the entire family, with a focus on the parents and kin. Specifically, I looked at the negotiations that take place between the Japanese mothers’ and British fathers’ differences, and the way in which culture, including customs, beliefs, and preferences, are then shared and transmitted to the mixed children. This qualitative, ethnographic study focused on twelve Japanese/British families in Edinburgh. Because socialisation and the transmission of culture tend to happen in the midst of doing mixed family, the following areas of the mixed families’ lives were explored: everyday lived culture, language choices, and food habits. When examining the foods eaten and the languages spoken by the mixed families, it seems that the mixed families are attempting to transmit both their linguistic and culinary heritages to their children, with their aspiration being to raise bilingual, bicultural children. In addition, this study explored the role that extended family and friends play in the lives of the mixed families as they attempt to form their new mixed family culture. The data collection was the result of 26 months of fieldwork consisting of participant observation at three local Japanese mother/toddler playgroups, interviews with both parents and extended family members, and home observations. Some major findings from the study were that, while mothers still tend to carry a heavier burden when it comes to everyday parenting, particularly in the domestic sphere, the fathers were also found to be involved in many aspects of everyday parenting. Additionally, both maternal and paternal kin were also found to offer the mixed families various types of support, with the most frequently mentioned types of support being practical and emotional. Further, mixed families were found to complicate this idea of ‘national culture’ because nationality is not tied to a culture. In this way, the transmission of culture becomes more fluid, allowing the British man to transmit “Japanese” customs and the Japanese woman to share her “British” interests with her children. Finally, while focusing on the intergenerational transmission of culture from parent to child, we find that children do indeed have agency in the transmission of culture, as they are the ones who ultimately decide whether their cultural heritage is a gift or a burden. The study thus offers a nuanced picture of mixed family lives in contemporary UK.

Twenty-two African American lesbians were interviewed in order to identify and examine the intersection of individual and family processes that African American lesbian couples engage in as a family with members of their families of origin. A qualitative research design based on grounded theory methods was used. Data were interpreted using an integrative framework of postmodern feminism, Black feminism, and symbolic interactionism. Findings revealed three major themes: a) Black lesbian couples go through a coming out process as a couple and as individuals, at times, simultaneously; b) Black lesbian families establish and enforce boundaries to protect their intentional, co-created families, and this boundary definition shapes lesbian family identity, and c) resources accessible from informal social supports by African American lesbian families are different from the types of social support and resources available to Black lesbian individuals. These findings provide valuable insights into lesbian family processes that can assist family studies, feminist scholars, family therapists, and community practitioners in identifying future research directions and clinical practices appropriate for African American lesbian families.

Streszczenie:
An evolution in methods of identifying the causal mutations and candidate genes for Mendelian disorders has occurred recently. Though several studies have reported the causative mutations in non syndromic tooth agenesis, there are only two reports on autosomal recessive nonsyndromic tooth agenesis in consanguineous families. Since the consanguinity rate is high in tribal population of Saudi and Pakistan, this study identified consanguineous families in these populations to investigate the molecular basis of tooth agenesis. This study aimed to study the phenotype of familial tooth agenesis in Saudi and Pakistani families of consanguineous marriage, and to identify the causative mutations. A further aim was to investigate the influence of the agenesis gene on tooth size in one large Saudi family. Sixteen families with non-syndromic tooth agenesis, were clinically characterised for the pattern of inheritance, tooth agenesis severity and type of teeth affected. Genetic analysis including homozygosity mapping and exome sequencing was performed in eight families. Hand measurements of Saudi family tooth dimensions were made on dental study models. The most affected tooth type in studied families were the lower second premolar and upper lateral incisors. The homozygosity mapping approach failed to identify the regions of the diseased mutations in these families. The exome sequencing data revealed a heterozygous novel frameshift mutation in exon 2 of the MSX1 gene, c.750_751insACCGGCTGCC (p.A250fs) in one Saudi family and a homozygous novel mutation in exon 8 of the SMOC2 gene, c.681T>A (p.C227X), in the Pakistani family. It was found that there was a significant (p <.0.05) trend of reduction in the crown sizes both in the tooth agenesis group and their family members with no tooth agenesis compared to the control group. It is concluded that homozygosity mapping was not sensitive to identify the elusive tooth agenesis gene and whole exome sequencing technique is needed in future studies. The tooth measurement study indicates and confirms that crown size is closely related to tooth agensis.

Streszczenie:

The purpose of this project was to design school-based, trauma-focused psychoeducational groups for mixed-status students and families utilizing the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Schools (CBITS) program, identify potential funding sources and to complete grant application requirements to fund an inclusive program at E. Neal Roberts Elementary School in San Bernardino, California. The presence of the target population of mixed- status students and families is significant within the San Bernardino community. The availability of services for mixed-status families that address socio-emotional stressors associated with immigration is limited. Therefore, an increased need for such support services are critical, particularly during the present political climate. A school-based program was seen a safe, accessible and effective way to deliver information and support for both mixed-status students and their families.

The components of the proposed trauma-focused groups include social problem skills, cognitive restructuring, psychoeducation, parent education and legal policy immigration education. Through a review of the literature, the needs and challenges of mixed-status families were explored to design a comprehensive proposal.

The actual submission and/or funding of this grant were not requirements for the successful completion of the project.

Streszczenie:
Remarried families are no longer the exception in society. Statistics reveal that this type of family structure is increasing. The need for family resilience research in varying family forms has been highlighted. Given the distinctive structure of the remarried family, there are specific dilemmas and challenges that need to be resolved on the journey towards family integration. Despite these challenges, many families benefit from their new family structure and show marked resiliency and ability to adapt. South African family resilience research is scarce. This study aimed to identify, explore and describe the resiliency factors that enable families to adjust and adapt as a result of being a stepfamily. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin, Thompson, & McCubbin, 2001) was used to conceptualize level of adaptation. Participants consisted of both adults and adolescents, in order to gain perspectives of adapting to a remarried family from differing individual family members’ stages of development. Participants consisted of 19 parents and 16 adolescents, equaling a total of 35 participants. Triangulation was employed, with an exploratory, descriptive approach. A biographical questionnaire with an open-ended question, in conjunction with a number of structured questionnaires were used to gather the data. These questionnaires were: The Family Hardiness Index (FHI), the Family Time and Routine Index (FTRI), the Social Support Index (SSI), the Family Problem-Solving Communication (FPSC) Index, the Family Crisis-Oriented Personal Evaluation Scales (F-COPES), the Relative and Friend Support Index (RFS), and the Family Attachment and Changeability Index 8 (FACI8). In this study the FACI8 was used as a measure to determine the level of family adaptation. Non-probability purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the biographical information. Correlation and regression analysis was used to analyze the quantitative data, and content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. The results of the quantitative component of the study indicated that there were three significant positive correlations with the FACI8 for both adults and adolescents. These variables were family hardiness (measured by the FHI), family problem solving communication (measured by the FPSC), and family time together and routines (measured by the FTRI). The Social Support subscale of the F-COPES showed a positive correlation with the FACI8 for the adults. The results of the qualitative component of the study revealed that various common themes emerged between the adult and adolescent participants’ responses. These common themes were spirituality; boundaries; respect, love, understanding, compassion and acceptance; communication; flexibility and tolerance; time together, bonding, and routines; and social support. There were four remaining themes that the adults identified as important factors helping them manage being part of a stepfamily. These four remaining themes were equality; forgiveness and acceptance of the past; commitment and being positive; and financial support. The value of the research was discussed. Finally, limitations of the study were discussed, and suggestions were made for future research involving remarried families.

This research explores the life experiences of families and couples who lived through the Wangary fire (South Australia, January 2005). Examining the bushfire experience from a domestic perspective is long overdue. Open-ended interviews were conducted with thirty-eight couples and families across the fire-affected region on the Lower Eyre Peninsula. A shortlist of fourteen were analysed in detail and they form the foundation of this thesis. These bushfire narratives include the perspectives of farming and non-farming families and cover a wide spectrum of circumstances and demographics. Five of the fourteen families lost their homes in the Wangary fire. Critical decision-making and the presence of children is at the heart of this case study. How the presence of babies and young children influences family decision-making, in advance of or during a bushfire, has not been considered or studied in any detail within the Australian research landscape. Exploring the differences of experience between women with young families and older women confirms the primary weakness of the national bushfire safety ('stay or go') policy. Gender and generation were the two defining factors that informed how people responded to and recovered from the Wangary fire. The perspective of younger people, within the context of bushfire research, has been neglected in the past; this case study incorporates their views and thoughts. It is hoped that insights gleaned from these bushfire narratives will encourage the enhancement of the national 'stay or go' policy.

Koch, Christina Louise. "Families of forbidden configurations". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44225.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The forbidden configuration problem arises from a question in extremal set theory. The question seeks a bound on the maximum number of subsets of an m-set given that some trace is forbidden. In terms of hypergraphs, we seek the maximum number of edges on a simple hypergraph of m vertices such that this hypergraph does not contain a forbidden sub-hypergraph. We will use the notation of matrices to describe the problem as follows. We call a (0,1)-matrix simple if it has no repeated columns; this will be the analogue of a simple hypergraph. Let F be a given matrix. We say that a (0,1)-matrix A contains F as a configuration if there is some submatrix of A that is a row and column permutation of F. This is equivalent to a hypergraph containing some sub-hypergraph. F need not be simple. We define forb(m, F ) as the maximum number of columns possible for a simple, m-rowed, (0,1)-matrix that does not contain F as a configuration. A variation of the forbidden configuration problem forbids a family of configurations F = {F₁, F₂, ... Fn} instead of a single configuration F. Thus, forb(m, F) becomes the maximum number of columns possible for a simple, m-rowed, (0,1)-matrix that does not contain any one of the matrices in the family as a configuration. We will present a series of results organized by the character of forb(m, F). These include a classification of families such that forb(m, F) is a constant and the unexpected result that for a certain family, forb(m, F) is on the order of m³/², where previous results typically had forb(m, F) on the order of integer powers of m. We will conclude with a case study of families of forbidden configurations and suggestions for future work.

Davidson, Michael James. "Families with aggressive children". Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4512.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
A major aim of this thesis was to contrast, within a laboratory setting, the family systems of two potentially different groups of people; those families with an aggressive 8-12 year old child in their midst about whom there was some parental concern, and those families with a highly-socialized 8-12 year old in their midst. The aim was to study the relationships within those families with the emphasis broader than simply focussing on the relationship between target child and significant others. Equal status was given to all within-family relationships. An attempt was made to both gather information on as many within-family relationships as possible and to overcome some of the pitfalls which cast doubt on the ecological validity of some earlier studies. The author has taken the perspective that if the current status of a family is to be understood then we must have some understanding of the perceptions family members hold of each other as well as the behaviours they choose to practice in each others' company. It is also held that the current status of a family is influenced by their relationship with the supports embedded in the community around them: work, leisure, extended family as examples. To begin with, an assessment of parents' perceptions of family relationships was carried out on both family groups, recruited from schools and helping organizations around Christchurch. A modification of Kelly's (1955) Repertory Grid called the Dyad Grid (Ryle, 1970) was utilised without adopting Kelly's Construct Theory. Findings indicated that parents of aggressive children found more difficulty with conflict resolution and reduced their emotional support for problem offspring. Mothers of those children also reported most feelings of hurt and signs of stress. All adult groups viewed fathers as functioning peripherally in family relationships. The relationships between the parents is a variable frequently mentioned in the literature on distressed and non-distressed families. An attempt was made to relate family perceptions to relationship satisfaction by grouping constructs from the grids into coercively and co-operatively associated constructs and by using the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test to measure relationship satisfaction. All parent groups reported satisfactory marital adjustment. However, parents of aggressive children reported a lower level of marital adjustment, lower inter-spousal and inter-familial co-operation (especially from husbands to wives) and higher use of coercion. The perceptions of the children were measured by using the Dyad Grid (Ryle, 1970) with the same INGRID and DELTA analyses (Slater, 1972) and same grouping of constructs as used with their parents. Compared to their parents' perceptions, aggressive children reported more parent-child co-operation, and their nearest-age siblings reported more parent-child coercion. These findings suggested that aggressive children may not be as much at risk from emotional isolation from their parents who may, in turn, perceive other family relationships more positively, but inaccurately. All children were aware of co-operative and coercive processes associated with relationships involving their fathers. Surprisingly, highly-socialized children described much awareness of intra-familial coercion reminding us that even the best of families can still be intimate battlegrounds. One of the potentially most interesting sections is that dealing with the supports available to each family group. Topics like stress and depression are currently being actively investigated in the context of their relation to family circumstances and perceptions (Wahler and Dumas, 1981; Belsky, 1984; Middlebrook and Forehand, 1985) but little definitive evidence is available to relate various kinds of support to different family types. So this section was largely exploratory. The area of supports and family types is very likely to be one where much exciting investigation occurs over the next few years. Findings suggested that parents of aggressive children, particularly mothers, tended to prefer separate leisure activities and to be less satisfied with their supports. These findings gave some support to those authors indicating links between parenting styles and isolation from supports. The final empirical section of this study looked at the behaviours demonstrated by family members to each other and attempted to relate those findings to those from the studies of perceptions, in an attempt to find the best predictors of intra-family behaviour. Families with aggressive children showed consistent trends to use and reciprocate more coercion over time. Their parents demonstrated greater involvement within their families' problem-solving interactions, but those involvements appeared to be neither contingent upon nor more effective in managing their childrens' behaviours. Consistently, behaviours were the best predictors of coercion in aggressive children and their parents, whereas behaviours plus perceptions were the best predictors of coercion from highly-socialized children and their mothers. It is suggested that perceptions may be a crucial mediating variable which reduces the likelihood of families being involved in recurring coercive cycles.

This doctoral thesis consists of three essays: Flying the Nest: Intergenerational Strategic Interaction, Co-residence, and Social Mobility. Southern Europe is characterized by high levels of intergenerational earnings persistence and high levels of co-residence between parents and their offspring. In contrast, Northern Europe exhibits low levels of earnings persistence and of co-residence. This paper analyzes both theoretically and quantitatively the importance of strategic interactions inside the family over living arrangements in generating intergenerational earnings persistence. Student Aid, Academic Achievement, and Labor Market Behavior provides a framework for quantifying the impacts of implicit incentives in study aid schemes. The authors estimate a dynamic discrete choice model of simultaneous education and work decisions to quantify the effects of study aid on college attainment, academic achievement, and early labor market outcomes using Swedish data and exploiting the Swedish Study Aid reform of 2001. Bank Liquidity, Stock Market Participation, and Economic Growth reconciles the decreasing trend in the liquidity ratio of financial businesses with the evolution of the financial architecture of the U.S economy. The authors build a neoclassical growth model where competition between banks and financial markets causes the liquidity held by the financial system to decrease.

Hapi is a novel dynamic programming algorithm for haplotyping nuclear families that outperforms contemporary family-based haplotyping algorithms. Haplotypes are useful for mapping and identifying genes which cause and contribute to the etiology of human disease, and for analyzing the products of meiosis to locate recombinations, enabling the identification of recombination hotspots and gene conversions. They can also be used to study population history, including expansion, contraction, and migration patterns in humans and other species. Hapi's efficiency is a result of eliminating or ignoring states and state transitions that are unnecessary for computing haplotypes. When applied to a dataset containing 103 families, Hapi performs over 3.8-320 times faster than state-of-the-art algorithms. These efficiency gains are practically important as they enable Hapi to haplotype family datasets which current algorithms are either unable to handle or are impractical for because of time constraints. Hapi infers both minimum-recombinant and maximum likelihood haplotypes, and because it applies to related individuals, the haplotypes it infers are highly accurate over large genomic distances.

This study is essentially descriptive and exploratory in nature and directed towards an understanding of the factors contributing to the resilience of Xhosa-speaking, rural black South African families. To contextualise the discussion a selection of theories on resilience are viewed within their cultural contexts. Western psychology’s privileging of a) the scrutiny of pathology while disregarding resilience; of b) white participants to black participants; and c) individuality to relationship centeredness and familial systems; are uncovered and a hypothetical understanding of Xhosa family resilience is construed. The line of thought culminates in the theoretical discussion and empirical exploration of The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin, Thompson, & McCubbin, 1996). In the concluding remarks of this project an adaptation of this model, namely the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Strength, Adjustment and Adaptation, is construed. The derived model is based on an integration of the findings of this study with resilience theory.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Families of people with schizophrenia often experience difficult challenges when it comes to dealing with this illness. Contemporary researchers suggest that families often take on the task of caring for their ill relatives with limited resources and support. Mental health professionals often fail to include the families in the treatment of their relatives. Although psychoeducation has been shown to be an important process that helps not only the families but relatives as well, mental health professionals commonly do not involve families in such activities. This study explored the experiences of families of people with schizophrenia and their subsequent contact with mental health professionals, as well as their understanding of schizophrenia as a mental disorder. To this end, a small sample of 10 families (four Xhosa speaking families as well as six Coloured families) was drawn in the Western Cape area on a convenience basis. In each case a family caregiver was interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were content analyzed. The findings of the study indicate that families find it difficult to deal with their ill relatives. Families often experience stigma-related incidents because of their relatives. They feel isolated and alone. Families often yearn to receive more information about the illness of their relatives. Also, the contact between mental health professionals and families was reported to be minimal at best. Family members reported that mental health professionals do not include them in the treatment process. Recommendations for further research and practice are made.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Using a cross-sectional survey research design the present study aims to explore those resilience factors which enable remarried families to withstand and rebound from the disruptive challenges they face. Furthermore, recovery factors were examined which enabled remarried families to cope more effectively and to emerge har-dier___fr_om a crisis. Remarried families who were married between one to four years, with at least one family member presently in school, were approached to take part in this study. A parent and a child from 38 families independently completed six questionnaires and an open-ended question. It is proposed that the most important resilience factors identified in this study, through qualitative and quantitative measures, include (1) family relationships and support (mutual respect, cooperation and a loving bond), (2) family communication that is affirming, conveying care and support, as well as less incendiary communication that tends to exacerbate a stressful situation, (3) the ability to have a sense of control over outcomes in life by having a active orientation in adjusting to and managing stressful situations, (4) activities and routines that helps the family in spending time together and creating togetherness, (5) a strong marriage relationship (consisting of clearly defined roles, equality and support for each other), (6) support from family and friends, (7) internal and external handling of problems by redefining stressful events and acquiring and accepting social support, (8) spirituality and religion within the family that provides meaning and purpose beyond a crisis situation.

In toric topology it is important to have a way of constructing Delzant polytopes, which have canonical combinatorial data. Furthermore we have examples of quasitoric manifolds with representatives in all even dimensions. These examples give rise to sequences of polytopes with related combinatorial invariants. In this thesis we intend to formalise the concept of a family of polytopes, which will behave in a similar way to the quotient spaces of quasi-toric manifolds. We will then compute certain combinatorial invariants in this context. Recently, polytope theory has developed to include the ring P with homogeneous polynomial invariants and an important operator d, which takes a polytope to the disjoint union of its facets. We will examine our families against this background and extend the polynomial invariants and d to entire families. In particular we will introduce a method to calculate polynomial invariants of families by the use of partial differential equations. We will also look at some polytopes called nestohedra, which arise from building sets. These nestohedra give us a construction of Delzant polytopes. We will show that it is possible to calculate d for any given nestohedra directly from its building set. We will also show that the canonical characteristic function of a nestohedron, F, which is a facet of a nestohedron, P, agrees with the characteristic function of F as a facet of P. We will see that nestohedra naturally form families. We will end this work by combining the work on nestohedra with the work on families and calculating the combinatorial invariants of some families of nestohedra.

Streszczenie:
This thesis follows the paper based format in that Papers One and Two are stand-alone papers prepared for submission for Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review and the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology respectively. The relevant submission guidelines are included in the appendix (Appendix 1). Asthma is the most common childhood chronic illness affecting an estimated 1.1 million children in the UK. A substantial body of research has shown that asthma prevalence and morbidity rates are associated not only with physiological factors but also with environmental and psychosocial factors. Identifying modifiable psychosocial variables involved in the expression and outcome of asthma in children enables identification of how and where interventions could be targeted. Two papers are presented in this thesis, which aims at contribute to research in this area followed by a critical evaluation of the research process, relevance and implications of the presented papers.Paper One is a review of the literature highlighting the biopsychosocial variables involved in the onset and development of childhood asthma. A model is proposed which aims at demonstrate the bidirectional influence of many variables thought to be involved in paediatric asthma expression. One significant area within the literature highlights the extent to which behaviour problems are elevated in asthmatic children. The prognosis for children who develop significant behaviour difficulties is poor.Research has shown that the quality of parenting a child receives has a significant impact on both the child's well-being and development. Literature included in Paper One highlights the relationship between asthma and parenting. Caregivers of asthmatic children have been shown to be more hostile and critical compared with caregivers of non-asthmatic children.Intervening early with families to promote warm, consistent and positive parenting is considered one of the most effective ways to treat behaviour difficulties. Parent training programmes have emerged as the most efficacious method of intervening with and treating child behaviour difficulties and enhancing parenting skills. In spite of their demonstrated effectiveness, engagement with programmes is often poor. As a result researchers have developed self-directed and web-based interventions. Despite their apparent benefits, uptake and continued engagement remains low.Paper Two aimed at examine whether providing asthma specific information enhanced engagement with a Triple P web-based intervention and identify any pre-treatment variables that predicted engagement. The final section, the Critical Evaluation, aimed at place the research in the wider context, consider the findings from both papers, highlight additional and unexpected outcomes and discuss the implications for future studies and limitations of the thesis.

Streszczenie:
This thesis reports findings arising from the question: ‘How do socio-cultural characteristics and maternal health influence the parenting patterns of families of Pakistani origin living in Bradford?’ Parents play a significant role in the lives of their children and a number of studies have been conducted on parenting and child development and factors that influence parenting practices, among white indigenous groups; but little is known about those of Pakistani families, and the influencing factors. There is a particularly high concentration of Pakistani families in Bradford, and the available BIB cohort database was important in selecting participants for this study, which was attached to the Maternal and Child Health theme of the BIB Research Cohort study and funded by CLARCH. Using a qualitative methodology, including face-to-face interviews and ethnographic observations the study explores the impact of health, level of education, religion, acculturation and social support on Pakistani families’ parenting patterns. The data was analysed by an initial coding, identifying themes, grouping of patterns, and arriving at meaningful explanations. The findings show that length of stay in the UK did not determine either the choice of language spoken at home or the level of acculturation. Higher levels of education were observed in the mothers who came to the UK than in those born in Bradford. Participants with a high level of education were more likely to be in work and able to provide robust, mentally stimulating learning environments. Most of the participants reported having experienced or currently experiencing depression, the majority do not seek professional help, but that of their family. Family support, particularly with childcare and religion, strongly shape Pakistani families’ parenting patterns. The study concludes that the sacred-secular bridge should be minimised by getting religious leaders involved in teaching key aspects of change or behaviour, in order to better secure the Pakistani communities’ attention and interest. A range of educational opportunities should be made available for Pakistani women who wish to access higher education, and institutions should engage with the community to know how they can best serve them.

The Filipino community is one of the most rapidly expanding non-English speaking background communities in Australia: a young vibrant community, well educated and qualified, possessing exceptional English language proficiency.Because of a significant proportion of Filipino-Australian intermarriage, and a large family-oriented immigration trend, many unique cross-cultural and social issues have emerged in the Filipino community. An examination of the literature revealed that many aspects on Filipino immigration to Australia are disproportionately studied, leading to the perpetuation of stereotypes and myths. There has been a tendency to focus on Filipino wives (not women), without reference to Filipino men, or to cultural values and experiences of Filipino families. The main objective of this study was to provide a broad sociological survey of Filipino immigrant families and latter generations in Australia. This study analysed the amalgamation of Filipino and Australian cultures through diverse family structures, and highlighted both differences and commonalities. The recognition of Filipino immigrants as active agents in their own settlement, provided an understanding of the adaptive reconstitution of Philipino culture through family interactions, child-rearing practices, employment and intergenerational experiences. An historical and cross-cultural perspective has employed to analyse the development of Filipino immigration to Australia and the socio-cultural issues affecting Filipino families.

The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and needs of families during the admission of a child to a paediatric ward in an acute care hospital. Qualitative research methods were used to access the caregivers' and professionals' perceptions of the culture that families experience in a paediatric in-patient setting. For this project, data collection methods included a review of the literature in the area, individual interviews with caregivers, and focus groups with paediatric health care professionals.
In the study, both parents and paediatric professionals described a multitude of experiences and needs of families during a child's admission to a paediatric ward in an acute care setting. Understanding the experiences and needs of families is important for professionals. The information collected in this study provides some insight into the culture that families experience when their child is admitted to a paediatric ward in an acute care hospital.

Diaconis and Ylvisaker (1979) give necessary conditions for conjugate priors for distributions from the natural exponential family to be proper as well as to have the property of linear posterior expectation of the mean parameter of the family. Their conditions for propriety and linear posterior expectation are also sufficient if the natural parameter space is equal to the set of all d-dimensional real numbers. In this paper their results are extended to characterize when conjugate priors are proper if the natural parameter space is bounded. For the special case where the natural exponential family is through a spherical probability distribution n,we show that the proper conjugate priors can be characterized by the behavior of the moment generating function of n at the boundary of the natural parameter space, or the second-order tail behavior of n. In addition, we show that if these families are non-regular, then linear posterior expectation never holds. The results for this special case are also extended to natural exponential families through elliptical probability distributions.

Streszczenie:
Recent sociological literature on family life focuses on the apparently increasing scope for individual choice in forming meaningful, intimate relationships. One important arena for the exercise of such choice is adoption, which is increasingly taking place across national boundaries, taking the form of intercountry adoption. Little attention, however, has been paid to this aspect of contemporary family life by these broader accounts of family change. The research which deals specifically with intercountry adoption focuses on the development and trends of the practice as well as outcome studies, often undertaken in the fields of social work and psychology, and there is little research which investigates the interaction between the general trends in family structure and intercountry adoption. This study responds to these gaps in the literature by examining the experiences of individuals choosing to form families through intercountry adoption in the Australian social policy environment. Documentary evidence was used to understand the development of Australian intercountry adoption and provide the historical and social policy context for the qualitative component of the study. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to develop an understanding of the choice participants made to form their family through intercountry adoption, and to examine how the state manages this area of social policy. My study found that individuals choose to form families through intercountry adoption because children are a crucial means by which they can add meaning to their lives and intimate relationships by providing another human being to love and nurture. This child focus was seen as ‘natural’ and, for some, as an inevitable extension of their relationship. The research also generated findings about the nature of relationships within intercountry adoptive families and the factors which influence how these families are different from biological families. The complex policy environment in Australia creates difficulties for individuals negotiating the system and diversity in legislation and practice among states results in an unclear policy orientation. The movement of children across international boundaries, while not new, has been influenced by a number of global forces including improved transport, enactment of international treaties, media coverage and the introduction of the internet. These advances have resulted in increased knowledge and access to information about intercountry adoption and a more developed understanding of how the process operates in other countries, which impacts on the experience of the process in Australia. The sociological account of family formation involving intercountry adoption in Australia that I have developed in this thesis confirms that relationships of choice are being formed in postmodern society, despite messages from a variety of authorities regarding family life which are often mixed, contradictory and dominated by particular family types, rather than by the concept of choice. My study differs from existing studies on intercountry adoption in its achievement of an account of the personal experiences of the intercountry adoption process and family life that links the two together, to show both how broader issues in postmodern family formation structure intercountry adoption, and how intercountry adoption constitutes a vital element of contemporary family formation.

There has been a transformation in family structure in Thailand due to the changes in economic and social structures over time. Though not recorded in census data the rise in single-parent families can be expected due to a rise in divorce rates, that have been recorded, over the past decades. However, the literature on single-parent families is limited and little is known about the experiences of single-mothers and children of singlemother families in Thailand. This study examines the factors that have major impacts on the well-being of children of single-parent families in Bangkok, Thailand. A qualitative methodology was employed to study the lived experiences from the point of views of 20 divorced single-mothers and 20 adult children from a different sample of divorced single-mother families in Bangkok, Thailand. Altogether 40 semistructured interviews were conducted in Bangkok, Thailand during June and July of 2010. Three theoretical frameworks, including family and household decision making theories, the life-course perspective, and the family composition perspective were applicable in this study to provide an understanding of how economic and social structures play an important role in the dissolution of marriages and how family composition plays an important role in the well-being of children. The findings of this study shed light on the lived experiences of participants and revealed the important factors that influence the well-being of children of single-mother families. The major factors include financial resources, parenting styles and discipline, and social supports. In addition, this study has implications for developing programs to assist and facilitate the well-being of single-parent families, strengthening the relationship within extended families, and eradicating the negative assumptions that are often associated with single-parent families.

Introduction: The great challenge in bioinformatics is data integration. The amount of available data is always increasing and there are no common unified standards of where, or how, the data should be stored. The aim of this workis to build an automated tool to annotate the different member families within the protein superfamily of medium-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (MDR), by finding common properties among the member proteins. The goal is to increase the understanding of the MDR superfamily as well as the different member families. This will add to the amount of knowledge gained for free when a new, unannotated, protein is matched as a member to a specific MDR member family. Method: The different types of data available all needed different handling. Textual data was mainly compared as strings while numeric data needed some special handling such as statistical calculations. Ontological data was handled as tree nodes where ancestry between terms had to be considered. This was implemented as a plugin-based system to make the tool easy to extend with additional data sources of different types. Results: The biggest challenge was data incompleteness yielding little (or no) results for some families and thus decreasing the statistical significance of the results. Results show that all the human and mouse MDR members have a Pfam ADH domain (ADH_N and/or ADH_zinc_N) and takes part in an oxidation-reduction process, often with NAD or NADP as cofactor. Many of the proteins contain zinc and are expressed in liver tissue. Conclusions: A python based tool for automatic annotation has been created to annotate the different MDR member families. The tool is easily extendable to be used with new databases and much of the results agrees with information found in literature. The utility and necessity of this system, as well as the quality of its produced results, are expected to only increase over time, even if no additional extensions are produced, as the system itself is able to make further and more detailed inferences as more and more data become available.
