Pełny tekst źródłaIn the fluctuating wave of digitization, the fourth industrial revolution or Industry 4.0 in the manufacturing industry, has begun that has accelerated industries and companies to adapt and change their whole business to maintain competitive. Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has become a central part of this change for manufacturing companies and can be interpreted as companies taking advantage of units to gather real-time data and in turn, lean towards the smart factory. A range of possibilities can be accessed by industries with the rise of IIoT, though the success of this change can differ between different companies depending on size, resources, and economic stability. Parallel to the opportunities, challenges arises for companies, especially small and middle-sized enterprises, that lack the economic resources and scale to redistribute and transform their business. In this paper, the goal has been to distinguish how middle-sized manufacturing companies handle the implementation of IIoT and the smart factory in order to adapt to the ever-changing technical paradigm that Industry 4.0 has introduced. Conclusions have been drawn from the combination of a theoretical framework and interviews with six Swedish middle-sized manufacturing companies. The digitization strategy for manufacturing companies varies from industries. However, there is a consensus that efforts towards a digitized production must take place in order to stay competitive where automation-, monitoring-, and controlling processes within IIoT are main factors to stay competitive. The pace and level of implementation can also differ depending on digital qualification and resistance to change from the staff. Important to note is that the relation between IIoT, digitization and increased competitiveness is not the only factors that are significant as there are more things to consider. The study also shows that competitive advantages are rarely the main reason why companies choose to digitize and implement IIoT.

Pełny tekst źródłaDoes the implementation of Western Codes of Conduct in Chinese factories, decrease the employees’ excess working hours? A code of conduct is a set of guidelines that a company or an organization set up in order to ensure that their operations are conducted in an ethically, socially and / or environmentally exemplary manner. Many businesses are adopting global Codes of Conduct to implement CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)-work in the own organization. For the work to be credible, these Codes of Conduct must also be implemented in the supply and distribution chains. When companies seek lower production costs and turn to subcontractors in lowwage countries, difficulties may arise with this implementation. These difficulties are mainly a consequence of the companies being separated geographically, which in turn leads to business cultural, social, political, economic and legal differences. Nevertheless, these CSR activities should improve the working conditions for employees in low-wage countries, such as China. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if the implementation of Western Codes of Conduct in Chinese factories has an effect on employees´ working hours. The thesis includes a study of existing theory and an empirical investigation. The theory covers Codes of Conduct, methods for implementing them in Asian supply chains, and the difficulties with this process. Empirical data were collected through a qualitative case study of a business deal. The transaction is between a German chain of “Do-it-Yourself”-stores and a Swedish supplier with production China. A common method for implementing Codes of Conduct in a supply chain is to establish written requirements for the subcontractor and verify compliance with these requirements. Internal and external factory audits are accepted tools for this verification. In the studied case the German company uses an external firm to verify that the Chinese factory meets the conditions of a global code of conduct. The empirical study confirms the difficulties described in the theory, businesscultural differences makes the system inadequate in short term.
