This article, written by JPT Technology Editor Chris Carpenter, contains highlights of paper IPTC 21441, “First-Time Worldwide Application of Glass-Reinforced Epoxy-Lined Tubing for Prevention of Asphaltene Deposition in Tubing in Oil Wells: A Case Study From Kuwait,” by Reji E. Chinnappan, SPE, Milan Telang, SPE, and Riyad Quttainah, SPE, Kuwait Oil Company, et al., prepared for presentation at the virtual 2021 International Petroleum Technology Conference, 23 March–1 April. The paper has not been peer reviewed. Copyright 2021 International Petroleum Technology Conference. Reproduced by permission. Asphaltene deposition in production tubing represents a major flow-assurance challenge. Common strategies to mitigate asphaltene deposition downhole include mechanical or solvent cleanouts and chemical inhibition. These are associated with production deferment, high job costs, safety and environmental risks, and operational issues. An operator has addressed this challenge using production tubing lined with glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy (GRE). This technology was implemented in two trial wells. The paper describes the different mitigation strategies employed by the operator and presents the findings of successful trials. Background Jurassic wells of a Kuwait Oil Company asset are producing light crude from a tight matrix-type reservoir located at a depth of 13,000–15,000 ft. Reservoir pressure has depleted from approximately 9,500–10,000 psi to approximately 6,000 psi because of sustained production in the absence of any significant pressure support. Oil production rates per well have diminished to the 500- to 1,000-BOPD range. The oil features high asphaltene onset pressures (4,000–5,000 psi). When considering time-lapse plots of caliper logs from a well where asphaltene deposition used to occur, the plot indicates that significant asphaltene deposition in the well took place below 4,500 ft and progressively increased over time. In approximately 5 months, the average internal diameter of the tubing reduced from 2.75 in. to less than 2 in., thereby constricting the flow significantly and requiring cleaning of the tubing. In extreme cases, the tubing string could be fully plugged. Many field trials with different tools and chemicals using batch and continuous treatment have been conducted in past years to solve this problem but without satisfactory results. Application of GRE-Lined Tubing for Asphaltene Control The operator decided to apply a novel strategy of using tubing internally lined with GRE based on its established ability to retard, and even eliminate, scale nucleation and deposition. The technology uses a thin-walled, solid-filament-wound GRE/fiberglass tube run inside carbon steel production tubing. Cement is pumped into the annulus between the steel tubing and the GRE liner. The ability to prevent asphaltene from sticking to the inner wall of the tubing is attributed to the smoother internal surface. It is also corroborated by a higher Hazen Williams coefficient value of 150 for GRE as compared with 110 for carbon steel pipe, which provides for lesser frictional pressure loss during flow. The GRE liners used by the operator have a surface roughness of 0.00011 in., which, unlike bare steel, is retained over the life of the GRE. The GRE-lined tubing proved to withstand temperatures of up to 280°F and hydrogen sulfide concentrations of up to 50%. This is comfortably more than the process conditions for the trial wells in consideration.

_ This article, written by JPT Technology Editor Chris Carpenter, contains highlights of paper SPE 213975, “Gas Lift Performance Enhancement Strategies by Downsizing and Using Dummy and Venturi Valves: A Paradigm Shift in Gas Lift Systems Management Philosophy,” by Wael F. Akeil, Ahmed M. El-Bohoty, and El-Sayed I. Abd El-Mawla, Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company, et al. The paper has not been peer reviewed. _ A mature offshore Egyptian field has entered a depletion phase. Most of its gas lift design bases were initiated during production startup and feature standardized sets of large gas lift valve port sizes with narrow spacing. Inconsistent well flow during reservoir depletion adds complications to the system. Therefore, a screenout model was created to select candidate wells for downsizing and for changing out with dummy and Venturi valves. After screening, 70 wells were selected for application of the new strategy. The complete paper discusses the effectiveness of smaller port sizes and the use of dummy and Venturi valves in enhancing gas lift performance and maximizing recovery. Field Background The field is divided into four main geographical quadrants, each with its own facilities. Total production currently is approximately 60,000 BOPD with an average water cut of 85%. Exploration and development of the field saw the drilling of more than 460 wells; half of these currently are experiencing reservoir pressure decline, drained reserves, or operational problems. Most wells are gas lifted, and the remainder either use electric submersible pump (ESP) installation or flow naturally. The facility consists of 73 offshore satellite platforms containing the wells—both oil producers and water injectors—connected to nine offshore complex platforms. As a part of continuous improvement trials, the operator reviewed the process of gas lift system management to introduce necessary improvements and recommend changes for long-term plans. The proposed amended management system was the result of monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization activities outlined in the complete paper. Amended Gas Lift Management System Using Dummy Valves in Gas Lift System. Conceptual Phase. A dummy valve is a special gas lift valve shaped like solid metallic bar with upper and lower packings. They are installed to replace unloading valves that are no longer needed. Installing dummy valves instead of the unloading valves can reduce problems such as valve interference and deepens the point of gas injection. Redesign Procedure Based on the New Production Profile. This practice can be applied in two main cases: First, if reservoir pressure has declined and the well is producing with a lower rate but the surface injection pressure is still high enough to reach deeper valves; and, second, if the well is planned to be recompleted from one formation to another that has a higher reservoir pressure but with lower formation feed as the result of lower productivity. The main steps for redesign are provided in the complete paper.

_ This article, written by JPT Technology Editor Chris Carpenter, contains highlights of paper OTC 32978, “Development and Implementation of an AI-Based System To Automate Textual Classification on Daily Drilling Reports,” by Stephan Perrout, Aliel F. Riente, and Guilherme S.F. Vanni, SPE, Petrobras, et al. The paper has not been peer reviewed. Copyright 2023 Offshore Technology Conference. Reproduced by permission. _ Structured daily drilling reports (DDRs) are a rich source of information that allows better planning, more-accurate risk analysis, and improved key performance indicators and contracts. However, such information is originally stored in a free-text and unstructured format, which becomes difficult for efficient data mining. With the advance of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly AI language models, applying such techniques over unstructured data has become critical to digital transformation. The complete paper presents an approach for automatic DDR classification that incorporates new techniques of AI. Introduction This work addresses the complex task of automatic classification of DDRs according to a newly proposed ontology. The ontology follows a hierarchical model that classifies actions into three or four levels depending on the intervention, considering drilling, completion, and abandonment. Each event has an ontology built and reviewed by experts in oil and gas. Classifying DDR constitutes a demanding task, and effectively exploiting AI-based models represents a promising solution. This work bridges the gap by proposing a classifier based on transformers along with recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to classify reported events described in unstructured text related to drilling, completion, and abandonment interventions. A large number of DDRs was used for training and validation of the proposed classifier, yielding promising results for key processes in the company. Neural-Network Techniques Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory. Early neural-network models are characterized by inputs of fixed length. This is a drawback when working with texts, however, because sentences vary in their number of words. To overcome such an issue and to process data sequentially, RNNs were proposed. The RNNs are characterized by a set of parameters inherent from the early models plus an internal memory (a hidden or internal state) responsible for storing the context of the sequence being processed. Long short-term memory (LSTM) is a variation of RNN proposed to mitigate two problems: Information can be easily lost when processing very long sequences, and the gradient can become quite low because of the high number of mathematical operations performed during the processing while remaining far from reaching the threshold. LSTM consists of a set of parameters called the input gate, forget gate, and output gate that control information flow through the network. This set of additional parameters helps to maintain only what is important for the internal state of the network besides controlling the output. BiLSTM is a variant of LSTM that comprises two LSTMs. One processes texts from left to right, and the second one processes texts from right to left. This feature allows “future” elements to be part of the model’s decision process for “past” elements. The final classification is the combination of the output of both LSTMs.

The monitoring of absenteeism-illness has revealed its high prevalence, and a strong relationship with work. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with absenteeism-illness among the rural workers in a timber company in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is an analytical cross-sectional study, carried out among 883 workers. The medical certificates issued in the company over one year were surveyed. For the analysis, use was made of descriptive statistics and bi- and multivariable analyses. The strength of association was measured by the odds ratio (OR) with help from logistic regression (p<0.05). A prevalence of 54% of medical certificates was found in the population. Bivariate analysis revealed an association between job (forestry assistant (OR=13.1), carpenter (OR=15) and chainsaw operator (OR=39.6)), length of service in the company, departments and length of schooling with absenteeism-illness. In the multi-variate analysis, the association between length of schooling and being a carpenter disappeared, while the other associations remained. It is concluded that there is important evidence about the occupational and demographic factors and absenteeism-illness among forestry workers.

The distinction between a minor professional architect and a leading builder in Wellington was considerably more blurred in the late nineteenth century than it would be today. However, busy architects could make a lot of money and the term "architect" carried status that might open more doors than would be available to a mere builder. Late nineteenth century Wellington is now apparently only represented by a handful of buildings by prominent architects. Most people automatically think of the CBD and names like Thomas Turnbull & Son, William Chatfield, Frederick de Jersey Clere, John Campbell and perhaps William Crichton. Clayton, Toxward and Tringham were dead or almost gone, and new generation architects were barely emerging. We contend, however, that this picture is an oversimplification and considerably more of 1890s Wellington remains, as does the evidence for a much longer roll-call of architects, some of whom practised on the fringes, both of the city and of their profession. The architects we discuss here did not generally design large, flamboyant buildings, nor did they cater for rich company clients. Many of the lesser-known architects were particularly susceptible to boom-bust cycles and were forced to seek other employment in lean times - hence their rapid arrivals and departures from the trade listings in the directories of these years

Phase I/II clinical trials of AME-133v in patients with relapsed follicular lymphoma have demonstrated an overall response rate of greater than 30% with a complete response rate of 16%. The extent and duration of depletion of CD19+ B-cells in peripheral blood was used as a surrogate of therapeutic levels of AME-133v. Analysis from the Phase I/II clinical trials is presented in this report. Methods CD-19 positive B-cells in peripheral blood were measured in 77 patients with relapsed follicular lymphoma enrolled in two phase I/II clinical trials of AME-133v. These studies assessed five different doses of AME-133v (from 2 mg/m2 to 375 mg/m2). AME-133v was administered intravenously four times at weekly intervals in both trials. Blood samples were taken at multiple time points throughout the trial and a central lab measured levels of circulating CD19+ B-cells using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). Results Excluding the four patients enrolled in the 2 mg/m2 dose cohort, depletion of peripheral B-cells occurred in all patients and was sustained over time (Table 1). Baseline levels of B-cell counts ranged from 4 × 103 to 1,187 × 103 cells/μL, with an average of 102 × 103 cells/μL and a median of 60 × 103 cells/μL. Within 24 hours of the first infusion, all patients had depletion of circulating B-cells; ninety-six percent of patients had less than 10 × 103 cells/μL and two patients had less than 20 × 103 cells/μL. Interestingly, AME-133v was effective at depleting B-cells even at doses as low as 7.5 mg/m2. To assess sustainability of B-cell depletion after four doses of AME-133v, CD19+ cell counts were evaluated at nine weeks after the fourth infusion and every three months thereafter. Complete depletion of CD19+ lymphocytes was sustained for nine weeks. At five months after the last infusion of AME-133v, nearly two-thirds of patients had no detectable circulating B-cells. Sustained B-cell depletion lasted for at least eight months following the last infusion in 63% of patients. Table 1. B-cell counts for all patients in 7.5, 30, 100 and 375 mg/m2 cohorts. Notably, this depletion occurred even at very low doses of drug administration and persisted over time. This may be related to its higher affinity for CD20, increased ADCC, or both. The sustained B-cell depletion may result in prolonged clinical response and might mitigate the need for maintenance therapy. A randomized trial is being planned to compare efficacy of AME-133v vs. rituximab. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Pollination is an effective ecosystem service, responsible for increasing the quantity and quality of fruits and seeds formed. Due to the self-incompatibility of some species of agricultural interest, cross-pollination is required and the limiting of pollinating species such affects its production. The yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa.), a selfincompatible specie is dependent on cross-pollination to form fruit. Thus, the general aim of this study was to study the biology of pollination and reproduction in P. edulis f. flavicarpa, emphasizing the efficacy of pollinators for this specie. The specific aims were: 1) to evaluate the richness, visitation frequency and the behavior of visitors in Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa flowers.; 2) to compare the efficacy in the formation of fruits and seeds of P. edulis f. flavicarpa through individual and two visits by Xylocopa frontalis with manual crosspollination and natural pollination and 3) assess whether there is pollen limitation through comparison between natural and manual cross-pollination. Visitors were observed during the flowering period, from January to April 2015, totaling 106 hours of observations. For fruiting testing and seed counts: 1) manual cross pollination (n = 37 flowers); 2) natural pollination (n = 52 flowers); 3) pollination by single visit of X. frontalis (n = 41 flowers) and 4) pollination by two visits of X. frontalis. Were identified bee species of Apis, Bombus, Centris, Epicharis, Eulaema, Melipona, Oxaea, Trigona and Xylocopa genera, Apidae, being also observed an individual belonging to Halictidae family. Insects belonging to other orders were also observed, including different species of butterflies (Lepidoptera), bugs (Hemiptera), flies (Diptera), beetles (Coleoptera) and the presence of family Trochilidae hummingbirds. The specie A. mellifera (thief behavior) and X. frontalis (predominantly pollinator behavior) were the most frequent in the plantation with 58.11% and 30.20% respectively of occurrence. Regarding pollination tests, we observed the formation of fruits in all the treatments. Flowers of manual cross-pollination obtained the highest fruiting rate when compared to other treatments. The fruiting rate through manual cross-pollination was significantly higher than that obtained in natural conditions (X2 = 12.676; degree of freedom = 1; p <0.05) indicating that there is pollen limitation in natural pollination. Regarding the number of seeds, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated no significant difference between the mean number of seeds produced in different reviews pollination. Conclude that there is richness of floral visitors specie in the study area, and that between them, the main pollinator species are those with larger, mainly bees belonging to the genus Xylocopa. Larger fruiting rates obtained by manual cross-pollination treatment suggest that more than one visit is needed to promote greater production rate in passion fruit crops.

In addition to risk assessments and evaluation as well as due diligence, whether a company can reach the expected synergy so as to strengthen its competitiveness after a merge will highly rely on its competence in management, risk control and consolidation. This study first analyzes the future growth and development trend of a touch-sensing controller IC design house from introducing the touch panel industry, to the role for a touch-sensing controller IC design house in the supply chain, the technology and end-use market situation. It further provides explanations why as a leading touch controller-sending IC design house in the industry and a primary listing company in Taiwan, its choice to merge a driver IC design house, as well as for the target synergies and the main considerations to determine the structure of this transaction; lastly the study offers suggestions to the potential issues the company may encounter in the future. If this M&;A case could be closed smoothly and take effect, it would set two precedents - one being that it would be the first case for a primary listing company to acquire a listing company in Taiwan, the other being that it would be a pioneer for a touch-sending controller IC design house to acquire a driver IC design house for technical integration.

Nowadays, most of the enterprises in Taiwan are facing the global competition. Especially for the export-oriented, small-to-medium sized companies, the operation environment become more and more severe. Due to Taiwan's international situation, we cannot successfully sign the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) with other countries, such as the geopolitical relations between Taiwan and the closest AEC (ASEAN Economic Community). This causes Taiwan to have higher tariffs in exporting than the members participated in the economic community. Therefore, cost reduction becomes the core issue for enterprises to maintain international competitiveness. In many industries, inventory costs might account for large portion of total costs. For metal can company, the amount even makes up as high as 40 to 50%. This motivates the study to explore the case of the F Company and to propose the cost reduction approach. For the study, the monthly sales data from 2010 to 2013 are collected. The forecasting methods are used to predict the future demand based on the 48 periods of both historical actual sales and deseasonlized data. Three proposed methods are moving average method, single exponential smoothing method, and linear regression analysis. Mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean absolute deviation (MAD) are used to evaluate these three methods. This study shows regression model with the deseasonlized historical data results in the best forecast within 1% of error. As a result, the inventory costs of the studied company are reduced by 4%. Hopefully, the thesis sheds some light to inventory problem, and provides guideline to increase prediction accuracy and cut down the inventory costs.

The study is to investigate the current status and future development of tourism industry in Taiwan. Taking F travel agency for example, we used strategic management model that based on the SWOT analysis to develop its business strategy. In 2001 the Government adopted an "open People from Mainland China to Taiwan tourism promotion program", and allowing mainland tourists to visit Taiwan officially in January 1, 2002. Since that the restrictions are loosen gradually. In recent years both sides of the straits interact frequently. And Taiwan is devoted to the tourism industry; especially in mainland China to Taiwan tourism showed high growth. But the associated policies are incomplete, such as tourist facilities, transportation, etc. The study takes F travel agency for example in qualitative research, and makes a comprehensive survey of the study in the issue of internal mainland tourists, and investigates the competitive strategy of tourism industry based on expert interview survey.

Taiwan IC design service industry started from 1993 since Faraday spun off from UMC and was funded as the first Taiwan IC design service company. Over the ten years, the number of IC design service companies has been growing to more than 20 companies in the industry. It becomes another star industry in Taiwan in addition to foundry, packaging and testing. Owing to Taiwan successful model of developing semiconductor industry, the neighbor underdevelopment countries are eagr to mimic Taiwan’s experience to build their own semiconductor industry in the objective of taking worldwide OEM market share. Their low-cost competitive advantage has threatened Taiwan leading position in the semiconductor OEM market. In order to get rid of the neighbor countries’ competition, our government is planning to upgrade Taiwan from a seminconductor manufacturing center to a high added value SOC design center. The IC design service with SIP and SOC development capability is the key industry our government wants to promote in the SI-Soft program. The thesis is studying the competitive advantage of nation and corporate strategy of Taiwan IC design service. The first chapter outlines the study’s motivation, objective and scope. Chapter 2 develops the theory foundation and analysis model derived from the lecture study. Chapert 3 defines the study method. Chapter 4 analyze the competitive advantage of nation of Taiwan IC design service by using Michael E. Porter’s dimond system taking production, demand, relative and supportive industry, corporate strategy, structure, competition, government and opportunity six dimensions into consideration. Chapter 5 uses Michael E. Porter’s five forces model to analyze the external opportunity and threat to Faraday and use Hill & Jones’ “The Roots of Competitive Advantage” to figure out how Faraday leverage its resource and capability to develop the distinctive competency in order to achieving superior efficiency, quality, innovation and customer responsiveness and than obtain its differentiation and low cost strategic goal and competitive advantage. The chapter 6 provides summary and suggestion.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis chapter applies the tools of the previous chapters to a particular company, Inditex, the largest fast fashion company in the world. The fast fashion industry faces major social (S) and environmental (E) challenges. Moreover, since the industry is characterised by high levels of outsourcing, those challenges tend to be hidden down the supply chain. The case study answers questions such as: how to calculate the integrated value of a company? Which company-reported data to use? How to fill the gaps from missing data in company reporting? We connect the company’s business model and purpose to its external impacts and transition challenges. This allows us to value on environmental (E), social (S), and financial (F) factors. We compute the company’s integrated value (IV) by summing FV, SV, and EV in several ways. The company’s IV turns out to be positive overall, but both positive SV and negative SV and EV turn out to be much larger than FV, which shows the importance of not netting. The large negative values need to be addressed: to be reduced and ideally eliminated. We therefore explore integrated value creation over time; how it can be improved; and how to communicate it to investors.

Streszczenie:
AbstractCapital structure is about the funding side of the company’s balance sheet and enables a better understanding of a company’s risk profile and health. We start from financial capital structure, which concerns the proportions of debt and equity in proportion to each other and the company’s asset base. These can be expressed in ratios such as debt/assets. We then consider theories that explain financial capital structure, such as the Modigliani-Miller (MM) theorems. Subsequently, we consider the capital structures of environmental (E) and social (S) separately. Companies generate assets and liabilities on E and S, as they do on the financial side. The main difference is that it is typically much less clear how strong the claims against the company are, and to what extent they will materialise in financial terms. However, their presence and size give strong indications of additional risk. The analysis of the capital structures of E and S allows us to take the next step, namely the construction of an integrated capital structure, which is the capital structure of F, E, and S combined. As found in Chap. 13 on the cost of integrated capital, liabilities on S and E can make the integrated capital structure riskier than the financial capital structure and raise the cost of integrated capital.

Streszczenie:
AbstractPurpose—While digital transformation has been widely implemented in large corporations, there is a big potential for startups and SMEs that are lagging behind in utilizing this opportunity. This chapter aims to raise awareness among startups and SMEs about digital transformation by developing a digital maturity model adopted, especially for international distributed work. The model serves as a framework for startups and SMEs to understand which dimensions influence and are important for digital transformation, and what specific questions are relevant for each of the dimensions.Design/methodology/approach—The research followed the Design Science Research with explorative interviews of two CEOs and development of case studies of companies currently undergoing the digital transformation process to get a deeper understanding of the different dimensions and which dimensions really matter. The artifacts are the dimensions that have a direct impact on the successful implementation of digital transformation, including a sample report of the digital maturity to position a company’s digital transformation against a baseline. Those dimensions were identified and chosen based on the review of 27 existing digital maturity models.Findings—The perception, that digital transformation is all about technology, has been disproved. Seven dimensions identified were (a) Culture and Leadership, (b) Digital Technologies, (c) Organization and Processes, (d) Employees and Digital Skills, (e) Customers, (f) Products and Innovation, and (g) Digital Strategy. Once a digital strategy is defined, a company can then focus on either internal or external environment. Culture and leadership need to be defined top-down as a base for driving change. Digital technologies are enablers, not drivers.Business implications—The use of a digital maturity model raises companies’ awareness about the current digital transformation phase and helps to understand, kick-off and accelerate their digital transformation to realize the aspired situation. While SMEs need to carefully plan and transform all aspects of a running company to benefit from digital opportunities, startups can launch digitally right from the start.Originality/value—Startups and internationally active SMEs can use the maturity model for a self-assessment as a first step to understand key dimensions to build a digital strategy and continuously work on improving maturity level as well as sustainability. Researchers in other countries can use the maturity model for classification and conduct a survey for comparative analysis among countries and different industries in different countries.

Streszczenie:
In 1979 the United States Air Force elected under the Engine Model Derivative Program (EMDP) to explore derivative engine concepts by the General Electric Company and the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Division of United Technology Corporation with the objective of improving engine durability and reducing engine ownership cost for future procurements of their first line fighter engines. Concurrently, General Dynamics was invited to develop the necessary airframe/engine interface definition to assure engine compatibility with the airplane requirements. This EMDP development culminated in 1981 with the Alternate Fighter Engine (AFE) competition with General Electric proposing the F110-GE-100 engine and Pratt and Whitney Aircraft proposing the F100-PW-220. Both engines were placed in Full Scale Development and both met the USAF objectives of 4000 TAC cycle life and improved engine cost and warranty for application to the F-15 and F-16 fighters. General Dynamics evolved the concept of the Common Engine Bay which has all aircraft interfaces compatible with either AFE engine and the current Pratt and Whitney Aircraft F100-PW-200 engine. The original F-16 nacelle design, with minor modification of the interfaces and engine mount structure, was adapted to permit full interchangeability for the F100-PW-200, F100-PW-220, or the F110-GE-100 engines. Design requirements were set to permit a common airplane with no break in the production line or aircraft model change and with appropriate simple kits to permit interchangeability of any of the three engines in the field at the organizational level. This manufacturing capability allows the USAF the flexibility to conduct subsequent competitive procurement of the engine.

In accordance with the cost-saving campaign in Mahakam block, sand consolidation was successfully developed as a cheaper alternative to sand control. Despite the limited development of sand consolidation market and the successful application of sand consolidation products from the current incumbent, Company faces the risk of limited access to other products and potential failure to switch existing products. However, self-validation for any desired product with lower risk exposure is considerable. Taking all the necessary lessons learned during initial product development, the successful application of sand consolidation depends on proper control of product deployment rather than the product composition itself. The systematic arrangement of all controlled parameters generates a causal relationship, which will act as a validating workflow to the other 3 new products. During the deployment of these products in 17 wells, all parameters were successfully controlled and it was possible to make the wells producing with a success rate of more than 90%. Based on this study result, Company will have more flexibility in using sand consolidation products variation by considering the associated resources: attractive pricing, contractual fairness, and logistic access.

With an overall company lifespan of only four years, Vertol Aircraft Corporation continued the tandem-rotor helicopter legacy of its predecessor, Piasecki Helicopter Corp., as well as research, development and testing of other V/STOL aircraft and technologies while concurrently designing two medium-lift transport helicopters that are still in worldwide use and/or production today. During this short timeframe, the company finalized production and deliveries of the H-21C Shawnee/V-44 for the US Army and international customers. The company designed and flew the world’s first tilt-wing VTOL, the NACA/Army/Navy/Vertol VZ-2A. Application of T53 and T58 turbine powerplants led to twin-turbine engine trials and flight tests with experimental H-21 variants. With Vertol’s in-theater customer support, the French Army and Navy introduced the H-21 into combat in Algeria which included the early use of armed, troop-carrying helicopters. The design, test and successful US and worldwide demonstrations of the privately-funded Vertol 107 led to development and certification of the 107-II airliner version and follow-on military transports as the Boeing H-46 Sea Knight. The contract to design and build the YHC-1B was won by Vertol in 1959 and led to the enduring Boeing H-47 Chinook.
