Introduction. There are various means of expressing emotional expressiveness in language, one of which is onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia refers to the sound or phonetic imitation of what is being described. In onomatopoeia, words express natural sounds and have different connotative meanings. Main part. Sound production in speech acquires the character of artistic expression and performs a certain methodological function. One or another element of the sound system of the language used in prose or poetic text (vowels and consonants, stressed and unstressed syllables, pauses, different intonations, syntactic techniques, repetition of words). In this paper, I explore the difference between expression of intention and expression of emotion through a discussion of a passage from G.E.M. Anscombe’s Intention, where she claims that expression of intention, unlike expression of emotion, is “purely conventional”. I argue that this claim is grounded on the fact that, although emotions can be described, expressions of emotion are not descriptions at all (e.g. of some present feeling or experience). Similarly, expressions of intention are not descriptions of a present state of mind but are rather the expression of a special sort of foreknowledge of a purported action. They are, in this respect, distinct from expression of emotion, since they are a description of some future happening (the purported action). Now, the centrally descriptive character of expressions of intention is what makes them “purely conventional”. But of course, Anscombe argues, one can have an intention without expressing it. And having an intention does not amount to having some description in mind.

Streszczenie:
Deleuze (1990) reads Part I of the Ethics as articulating an expressionist philosophy, in which to express (exprimere) is the ontological criterion for existence throughout Spinoza’s metaphysical system. However, he argues that inadequate ideas and passions are non‑expressing, such that finite modes express substance only in their adequate ideas. I argue, contra Deleuze, that Spinoza’s account of the workings of the human mind presses us to understand inadequate ideas as genuine expressions of substance which nonetheless are specific to the individuals which form them. On the same textual grounds I propose that the mind’s expression of substance in inadequate ideas, and thus in virtue of its encounters with other modes, is a source of both creativity and potential instability. I put this insight to work in a reading of Spinoza’s political philosophy, arguing that expression generates a dynamic in which social formations enact and reinforce their own forms of expression, while also being subject to the reimaginations and expression of those who live within them.

e14606 Background: Serpin B5 is a candidate tumor suppressor but its oncogenic activity has been also reported. Its function may be affected by interacting proteins. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between serpin B5 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) expressions in CRC. We also analyzed the clinicopathological significance of serpin B5 expression in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Methods: Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) analysis and matrix-associated laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) were used to identify differentially expressing proteins according to CEA suppression. Serpin B5 and CEA expressions were evaluated by western blot and ELISA assays. Immunohistochemical expression of serpin B5 was assessed retrospectively in tissues from 377 CRC patients, and correlations between serpin B5 and clinicopathological parameters were analyzed. Results: Downregulation of serpin B5 was identified in CEA-suppressed LoVo cell line using 2-DE and MALDI-MS analyses, and further significant positive correlations between serpin B5 and CEA levels were also found in human CRC cell lines and in blood of CRC patients. Tissue expression of serpin B5 in CRC was significantly associated with serum CEA, histologic grade, stage, lymph node metastasis, liver metastasis, lymphatic and perineural invasion, and infiltrative border. High expression of serpin B5 was also associated with a reduced DFS (P = 0.001) and OS (P = 0.017). Conclusions: This is the first study describing relationship between serpin B5 and CEA expression in CRC. High expression of serpin B5 was also associated with worse prognosis in patients with CRC, and its expression may correlate with CEA levels in CRC.

Expression is the most basic personality trait of an individual. Expressions, ubiquitous to humans from all cultures, can be pivotal in analyzing the personality which is not confined to boundaries. Analyzing the changes in the expression of the individual can bolster the process of deriving his/her personality traits underscoring the paramount reactions like anger, happiness, sadness and so on. This paper aims to exercise Neural Network algorithms to predict the personality traits of an individual from his/her facial expressions. In this paper, a methodology to analyze the personality traits of the individual by periodic monitoring of the changes in facial expressions is presented. The proposed system is intended to analyze the expressions by exploiting Neural Networks strategies to first analyze the facial expressions of the individual by constantly monitoring an individual under observation. This monitoring is done with the help of OpenCV which captures the facial expression at an interval of 15 secs. Thousands of images per expression are used to train the model to aptly distinguish between expression using prominent Neural Network Methodologies of Forward and Backward Propagation. The identified expression is then be fed to a derivative system which plots a graph highlighting the changes in the expression. The graph acts as the crux of the proposed system. The project is important from the perspective of serving as an alternative to manual monitoring which are prone to errors and subjective in nature.

The main aim of this study was to examine the norms of expressing emotions on social media. Specifically, the perceived appropriateness (i.e. injunctive norms) of expressing six discrete emotions (i.e. sadness, anger, disappointment, worry, joy, and pride) was investigated across four different social media platforms. Drawing on data collected in March 2016 among 1201 young Dutch users (15–25 years), we found that positive expressions were generally perceived as more appropriate than negative expressions across all platforms. In line with the objective of the study, some platform differences were found. The expression of negative emotions was rated as most appropriate for WhatsApp, followed by Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. For positive emotion expression, perceived appropriateness was highest for WhatsApp, followed by Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Additionally, some gender differences were found, while age showed little variations. Overall, the results contribute to a more informed understanding of emotion expression online.

Facial Expression Recognition is a system which provides an interface for computer and human interaction. With the advancement of technology and need of the hour such systems have earned the interest of researchers in psychology, medicine, computer science and similar other fields as its applications are identified in such fields. Facial expression recognizer is an application which uses live data coming from the camera or even the existing videos to capture the expressions of the person in the video and is represented on the screen in the form of attractive emojis. Expressions form the basis of human communication and interaction. Expressions are used as a crucial tool to study the behaviour in the medicine and psychological fields to understand the state of mind of the people. The main objective to develop such a system was to be able to classify facial expressions using CNN algorithm which is responsible for the expression detection and then providing a corresponding emoticon relevant to detected facial expression as the output.

Effective vaccination induces immune memory to protect animals upon pathogen re-encounter. Despite contradictory reports, bovine memory T cells are identified based on two isoforms of CD45, expression of CD45RO plus exclusion of CD45RA. In this report, we contrasted CD45RA/RO expression on circulatory T cells with IFNγ and IL4 expression induced by a conventional method. To our surprise, 20% of cattle from an enclosed herd did not express CD45RO on T cells without any significant difference on CD45RA expression and IFNγ or IL4 induction. In CD45RO expressing cattle, CD45RA and CD45RO expressions excluded each other, with dominant CD45RO (>90%) expression on gamma delta (γδ) followed by CD4+ (60%) but significantly higher CD45RA expression on CD8+ T cells (about 80%). Importantly, more than 80% of CD45RO expressing CD4+ and CD8+ T cells failed to produce IFNγ and IL-4; however, within the cytokine inducing cells, CD4+ T cells highly expressed CD45RO but those within CD8+ T cells mostly expressed CD45RA. Hence, CD45RO is not ubiquitously expressed in cattle, and rather than with memory phenotype, CD45RA/RO expression are more associated with distinct T cell subtypes.

Abstract Expressing opinions is considered a significant communicative act frequently taking place in our conversations. It is one of the fairly neglected areas of research in the Arabic context. Among the studies conducted on the communicative acts, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no attempt to investigate the expressions of opinion and its strategies specifically in Jordanian Arabic (JA). To this end, the current study intends to investigate the communicative act of opinion giving in JA with reference to gender disparities. Data elicited from 50 male and 50 female speakers of JA via Discourse Completion Task and role-plays revealed that Jordanians resort to a mixture of expressions to convey their opinion clearly. They use various types of strategies, including direct expression of opinion, indirect manifestation of opinion, advice, suggesting, enumeration, prayers, address terms, complaining, personalized hedges, and rarely opting out. In addition, gender differences were also noticed in expressing this speech act. Males use direct expression strategy and imperative expression significantly more than the female participants, whereas the females used six strategies significantly more than their male counterparts: indirect expression, advice, personalized hedges, suggesting, prayers, and address terms.

The role of the social context in facial identity recognition and expression recall was investigated by manipulating the sender’s emotional expression and the perceiver’s experienced emotion during encoding. A mixed-design with one manipulated between-subjects factor (perceiver’s experienced emotion) and two within-subjects factors (change in experienced emotion and sender’s emotional expression) was used. Senders’ positive and negative expressions were implicitly encoded while perceivers experienced their baseline emotion and then either a positive or a negative emotion. Facial identity recognition was then tested using senders’ neutral expressions. Memory for senders previously seen expressing positive or negative emotion was facilitated if the perceiver initially encoded the expression while experiencing a positive or a negative emotion, respectively. Furthermore, perceivers were confident of their decisions. This research provides a more detailed understanding of the social context by exploring how the sender–perceiver interaction affects the memory for the sender.

Expressing emotions through various modalities is a crucial function not only for humans but also for robots. The mapping method from facial expressions to the basic emotions is widely used in research on robot emotional expressions. This method claims that there are specific facial muscle activation patterns for each emotional expression and people can perceive these emotions by reading these patterns. However, recent research on human behavior reveals that some emotional expressions, such as the emotion “intense”, are difficult to judge as positive or negative by just looking at the facial expression alone. Nevertheless, it has not been investigated whether robots can also express ambiguous facial expressions with no clear valence and whether the addition of body expressions can make the facial valence clearer to humans. This paper shows that an ambiguous facial expression of an android can be perceived more clearly by viewers when body postures and movements are added. We conducted three experiments and online surveys among North American residents with 94, 114 and 114 participants, respectively. In Experiment 1, by calculating the entropy, we found that the facial expression “intense” was difficult to judge as positive or negative when they were only shown the facial expression. In Experiments 2 and 3, by analyzing ANOVA, we confirmed that participants were better at judging the facial valence when they were shown the whole body of the android, even though the facial expression was the same as in Experiment 1. These results suggest that facial and body expressions by robots should be designed jointly to achieve better communication with humans. In order to achieve smoother cooperative human-robot interaction, such as education by robots, emotion expressions conveyed through a combination of both the face and the body of the robot is necessary to convey the robot’s intentions or desires to humans.

We often show an invariant or comparable recognition performance for perceiving prototypical facial expressions, such as happiness and anger, under different viewing settings. However, it is unclear to what extent the categorisation of ambiguous expressions and associated interpretation bias are invariant in degraded viewing conditions. In this exploratory eye-tracking study, we systematically manipulated both facial expression ambiguity (via morphing happy and angry expressions in different proportions) and face image clarity/quality (via manipulating image resolution) to measure participants’ expression categorisation performance, perceived expression intensity, and associated face-viewing gaze distribution. Our analysis revealed that increasing facial expression ambiguity and decreasing face image quality induced the opposite direction of expression interpretation bias (negativity vs. positivity bias, or increased anger vs. increased happiness categorisation), the same direction of deterioration impact on rating expression intensity, and qualitatively different influence on face-viewing gaze allocation (decreased gaze at eyes but increased gaze at mouth vs. stronger central fixation bias). These novel findings suggest that in comparison with prototypical facial expressions, our visual system has less perceptual tolerance in processing ambiguous expressions which are subject to viewing condition-dependent interpretation bias.

The use of giving and offering help is the primary expression in communication. These expressions in English are often needed, especially for nursing, where meeting with the public, including foreigners, is possible. This study aimed to determine the process of providing material about the expressions used in giving and offering assistance to patients in English and how to pronounce the vocabulary using the role-play method. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach to the subject of nursing students in the first semester at Universitas Wiraraja. The result stated that giving and offering help with role-play occurred with several obstacles. The students' limited knowledge about expressions to provide and assist patients made the learning process not optimal. Only a few expressions were used to describe the expression giving and offering help. Some students had difficulty in choosing words, especially related to health-based words. Errors in pronouncing some vocabulary were also an obstacle in the learning, especially in expressing giving and offering some helps. In addition, due to the mispronunciation, the students speak with low fluency.

Emotion is an expression that human use in expressing their feelings. It can be express through facial expression, body language and voice tone. Humans' facial expression is a major way in conveying emotion since it is the most powerful, natural and universal signal to express humans' emotion condition. However, humans' facial expression has similar patterns, and it is very confusing in recognizing the expression using naked eye. For instance, afraid and surprised is very similar to one another. Thus, this will lead to confusion in determining the facial expression. Hence, this study aims to develop a application for emotion recognition that can recognize emotion based on facial expression in real-time. The Deep Learning based technique, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is implemented in this study. The Mobile Net algorithm is deployed to train the model for recognition. There are four types of facial expressions to be recognized which are happy, sad, surprise, and disgusting. Keywords: Facial Emotion Recognition, Deep Learning, CNN, Image Processing.

Japanese has the concept of apologizing, because in Japanese there are levels of language. There are also various apologies in Japanese, one of which is the sumimasen expression. In learning Japanese, especially in basic learning, sumimasen expressions are often found. This is because the expression sumimasen means formally apologizing or is included in learning aisatsu which is basic learning in Japanese. The purpose of this research was carried out because the expression sumimasen does not have a meaning as an expression of apologizing only, but can be used in different situations according to the context. This study used a qualitative descriptive method using a pragmatic approach. The technique used in this research is note tapping technique, in which the researcher himself acts as an observer in processing the data contained in the data source. This research focuses on the meaning of the sumimasen expression in the anime Bungou Sray Dogs by Kafka Asagiri. The results of this study are that although the expression sumimasen has 4 different meanings according to the context and situation of the speech, the meaning that is widely available and used is the meaning of apologizing. From these results, it can be seen that in Japanese the meaning of the expression sumimasen is used more as apologizing than the meaning of expressing gratitude, asking for help, or attracting attention or expressions of excuse.

However, the facial features extracted by most facial expression generation methods are not deeply explored. We propose a method for synthesizing 3D continuous facial expressions based on human expression feature maps, which includes an identity converter based on expression feature maps, a facial image generator, and linear interpolation of continuous expressions. Through comparative experiments, this method has shown good stability and fast speed in synthesizing continuous expressions.

Abstract Background and Objective.—Fas ligand (FasL, CD95L) is a type II transmembrane protein of the tumor necrosis factor family that induces cells to send an apoptotic signal to cells expressing Fas (CD95, APO-1). It has been shown that cancers have a dysregulated expression of Fas and FasL system, conferring a survival advantage. It is important to understand FasL and Fas expression in tumors, because the growth of cancer might be controlled by Fas-mediated apoptosis. Methods.—The expressions of FasL and Fas were studied by immunohistochemical analyses in 51 cases of renal cell carcinomas and the adjacent normal renal tissues, respectively. In addition, their expressions were compared with prognostic factors, such as tumor size, nuclear grade, TNM stage, and histologic types. Results.—In nonneoplastic renal tissues, FasL was expressed in all nephron segments, whereas Fas also expressed in all tubules, except for glomeruli. In renal cell carcinomas, FasL protein was detected in 50 (98.0%) of 51 cases, whereas Fas expressed in 38 (74.5%) of 51 cases. In fact, the immunostaining of Fas was less intense than that in the adjacent normal segments of all cases. The staining pattern showing both high expression of FasL and low expression of Fas was found in 36 (70.6%) (P = .04) of 51 cases, most of which were Fuhrman grade 2 or 3 tumors. However, the expression pattern did not correlate statistically with the tumor size, histologic type, or clinical stage. On the other hand, most grade 4 tumors displayed high expression of both FasL and Fas (P < .001). Conclusion.—These data indicate that high expression of FasL and low expression of Fas protein in renal cell carcinomas may play a role in evading surveillance of the immune system. In addition, the FasL and Fas expressions appear to have a therapeutic implication for high-grade tumors rather than a prognostic one.

Previous reports of TCR V beta usage, studying either expression of a single V beta in a wide panel of strains (6, 7, 10, 12, 13), or expression of multiple V beta s in a very limited strain distribution (14, 15), have identified instances of clonal deletion of potentially autoreactive T cells specific for either self E alpha E beta or minor lymphocyte stimulatory (Mls) antigens. The present study has investigated the range of self antigens that can influence V beta usage by evaluating expression of 16 V beta families in 30 strains of mice. It was found that significant decreases in expression occur in at least 8 of the 16 V beta families and that dominant influences on the T cell V beta repertoire are exerted by expression of Mlsa, Mlsc, and MHC gene products. Decreased expressions of V beta 5, -11, -12, and -16 were influenced by MHC gene products. The patterns of decreased expression seen in intra-MHC recombinant strains and strains of different non-MHC background were distinct for V beta 11, -12, and -16, suggesting that different ligands are involved in the deletion of T cells expressing each of these V beta genes. Mice expressing Mlsa show decreased expression of V beta 9 as well as V beta 6. Mlsc mice lacked V beta 3 expression in those strains where the expressed MHC type was compatible with a strongly stimulatory Mlsc phenotype. V beta 7 was strongly influenced by both MHC and non-MHC products that are not yet identified. These results demonstrate that strain-specific decreases of mRNA expression occur in a major portion of the TCR repertoire. Self antigens including Mlsa, Mlsc, and E alpha E beta, as well as additional MHC and non-MHC products, appear to induce these decreases in expression in the process of eliminating self-reactive T cells from the mature T cell pool.

Chondrocytes regulate anabolic and catabolic processes to maintain the extracellular matrix components. Catabolic activities depend on the proteolytic action of the matrix -degrading enzymes including ADAMTS (A disintegrin and metalloproteinases) and MMP (Matrix Metalloproteinase). The current study explored the distribution of MMP-9 in normal articular cartilages of the embryos rabbit. Articular cartilage has grown by appositional growth that the perichondrial stem cells differentiate into chondrocytes. MMP-9 positive perichondrial stem cells or chondroblasts and early chondrocytes. Mature chondrocytes exhibited weak immunoaffinity for MMP-9. In conclusion, MMP-9 was essential during chondrocytes growth. The current study alludes to the potential role of MMP-9 during the growth of the articular cartilage.

Cervical mucus is a viscous fluid functioning as a cervix plug. Products of the endometrial and cervical glands can be detected in the cervical mucus. Cervical mucus is further enriched with transudate originating from the fallopian tubes and proteins originating from the ovaries, peritoneum and distant tissues. With increasing levels of ovarian estrogens, the properties of cervical mucus for possible collection and processing change appropriately. For these reasons, we chose a group of 10 patients treated in the center of assisted reproduction by controlled ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization. This study focuses on the proteomic characterization of cervical mucus and localizes the possible sources of the identified proteins. The most abundant proteins were extracellular proteins, mainly mucins; however, most of the identified proteins, present usually in lower quantities, were of intracellular origin. The tissue analysis revealed that proteins from female reproductive organs are also expressed in other tissues in addition to female reproductive organs, but also proteins specific to the testis, liver, placenta, retina, and cerebellum. This study confirms the suitability and high potential of cervical mucus as a source of proteomic bio markers not only for the diagnosis of the female reproductive tract. Key words: cervical mucus – proteomics – tissue expression
