Streszczenie:
The user experience (UX) design practice (c.m.p interaction design practice) has started to make profound changes in designing intelligent digital services using Machine Learning (ML) to enhance the UX. ML has the capability to enhance the user’s experience, for example, facilitating more accurate decisions or improving efficiency in achieving one's goals. However, research suggests that ML is a challenging design material in design practice, such as not envisioning the best-suited solution because of not comprehending data dependency when prototyping or the lack of tools and methods for evaluating the solution. Without a doubt, ML opens new doors for UX designers to be creative in their practice. However, research indicates that lack of knowledge transfer into UX design practice may hamper this potential. This paper explores how UX designers experience ML. The findings resulted in 5 experiences: 1) Absence of competence, 2) Lack of incentive for competence development, 3) Challenging articulating design criteria, 4) Mature vs. Immature customers, 5) Lack of support for ethical concerns. I discuss the implications of these findings and propose how we can understand UX design practice and opportunities for additional design research to support designers working with ML.

Streszczenie:
Depression is being diagnosed worldwide at rapidly increasing rates. The World Health Organization has identified depression as the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Women are diagnosed with depression at twice the rate of men. Although much research has been conducted on depression in women, there is very little research on depression in lesbians. The impact of living within a heteronormative society upon lesbians' experiences of depression is unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore lesbians' subjective experiences of depression. Critical ethnographic methods were used to study the ways that lesbians construct their experiences of depression. Twelve self-identified lesbians participated in up to three in-depth interviews conducted over an eight month period. Social constructionism and critical theories underpinned the study's methodology. Thematic analysis led to a schema of themes, domains, and categories that described the participants' experiences. The analysis found no commonalities across the narratives linking being a lesbian with experiences of depression. However, many patterns did emerge describing the ways that the participants construct their experiences of depression. Four themes were identified: Being depressed: Describing the experience, The roots of depression: Emotional dissonance, Managing depression: Desire for relief, and Explaining depression: Needing to know why . The dominant discourses of depression forwarded by psychiatry and psychology have penetrated the popular culture and shaped the participants' understandings of their feelings of depression. These discourses assist in the maintenance of social hegemonies. Further analysis of the study themes led to the discovery that experiences of depression are class-mediated, with study outliers offering glimpses into alternative class-based constructions of depression. The participants shared a number of constructs in formulations of their sexuality. Lesbian identity and radical-cultural feminist discourses underpinned the participants' narratives of identity. Class privilege was identified as significant in these women's abilities to comfortably negotiate their marginalized sexuality within a heteronormative society. Implications of the study for nursing practice, education and research include the formulation of new understandings of lesbianism and sexuality. Findings indicate future depression research must explore of the ways social class influences experiences and perceptions of depression.

For as long as Black men and police officers have co-existed in North America, tensions have persisted between the two groups. Issues of racial profiling, racial discrimination and other forms of racism have plagued Black men’s experiences and perceptions. Currently, tensions between these two groups have been high resulting in the emergence of social activist groups, such as Black Lives Matter. Most of what is known about race and policing tends to focus on Black men, policing and its negative aspects. However, in addition to examining and studying the negative aspects, there is a need to provide discussion on the potential positive aspects. Little is known about the processes through which Black men identify and determine the positive elements that constitute a positive experience. This is a perspective that has not been explored in depth in the literature concerning policing and race in Canada. The present study addresses the gaps in the existing literature by conducting a thematic analysis of 10 in-depth interviews with Black Torontonian men. In doing so, the interview gives voice to Black men by having them identify the elements of a positive and negative experience, and by providing clues to police and Black men’s interactions in Canada. Drawing upon symbolic interactionist concepts, this study provides a Black perspective on the processes for Black men’s daily interactions with police officers. Policy implications based on the findings section are presented at the end of the study, in addition to directions for future research.

Streszczenie:
Men are increasingly underrepresented in counselor education and in the counseling profession, with only 27% of members of the American Counseling Association reporting as men. Men in counseling often feel marginalized and isolated. Additionally, they are socialized to be independent, emotionally and physically strong, and to focus on success, while being discouraged from seeking help. Continual exposure to the trauma material of others can cause secondary trauma, with cumulative deleterious effects identified in this study using the Heidegger's hermeneutic phenomenology. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of male counselors who primarily work with children who have experienced trauma. Using purposive sampling 6 licensed male counselor participants were identified, and semistructured interviews were conducted. A hermeneutic interpretation made through the lens of constructivist self-development theory was used to further elucidate participants' experiences. The 13 themes generated from this data included: (a) counselors' use of an eclectic theoretical approach, (b) majority of the clients had experienced trauma, (c) experiences of vicarious trauma, (d) increased empathy and growth; (e) negative impact of vicarious trauma, (f) help-seeking behavior, (g) denial of help-seeking behavior, (h) additional training, (i) coping skills, (j) supportive supervisors, (k) peer consultation, (l) supervisor role, (m) world is unsafe/people are bad, and (o) increasing knowledge. Implications for social change include empowering current and future male counselors to effectively understand and mitigate negative consequences of vicarious trauma from working with children who have experienced trauma.

In recent years, intense competition, fueled in large part by globalization and digitalization, has been accelerating the process of commoditization of products and services. Even when design is deployed to shape the product and distinguish it from competitors, the design often remains product-centric and easy to replicate. These dynamics have created an abundance of material wealth in developed economies, and people are often choosing to devote discretionary income to paying for fulfilling, unique experiences. In response, more companies are beginning to offer experiences to their customers as a way of differentiating themselves. Experiences, first recognized as a distinct economic offering in the late 1990s, are more holistic and subjective than products or services, appeal to higher order needs than the purely functional, and facilitate the development of customer-company relationships in place of transactional exchanges. The imperative of offering experiences presents significant challenges for nearly all companies, as they will be required to shift from being product-centric to being customer-centric. Recognizing that experiences reflect many technology products in their complexity, this thesis seeks to combine the fields of human-centered design and systems design to make experience design more accessible to all companies. Then, based on analysis of design systems and transmedia, it presents the concept of creating a design platform that permits extension and further development of the experience. This strategy balances consistency with the ability to respond to customer needs and adoption of new technology platforms. Finally, ideas for future research into this nascent field are presented.

Trying to enhance the understanding of Kafkaesque experiences that greatly affect organizations and people and aiming to fill the gap in the literature on this topic, this study was developed. A qualitative research allowed a true clarification of how people experience and deal with Kafkaesque bureaucracy. Through the analysis of the performed interviews three responses were recognized: inactiveness, helplessness and meaninglessness, which reflect the attitude’s components. Understanding that these findings constitute a mutually debilitating combination, the impact of these experiences both on people and organizations was revealed to be negative, leading three actions to avoid generating those to be suggested to organizations.

Both the short-term and long-term unemployment rates for older workers in the United States have increased significantly since the 2007 recession. Researchers who examine the impact of involuntary job loss have predominantly focused on the experiences of men. Limited prior research exists on the job loss experiences of women over 50 years of age compared to men. The goal of this study was to address this gap in knowledge by examining the lived experiences of women over 50 who had experienced involuntary job loss, the barriers faced to reemployment, and the ways women overcame the barriers to reemployment. A phenomenological design was employed to gather data from a convenience sample of 10 women in a northeastern metropolitan city. Guided by the frameworks of Bandura and Leana and Feldman, this transcendental approach aimed to capture the lived experiences of the women who incurred involuntary job loss. Data transcribed from audio-taped interviews were manually coded and aligned with the appropriate research question. The findings highlighted the emotions, finances, family and social life of women following job loss. The findings suggest women faced age discrimination, organizational practices, technological challenges, and stereotypical beliefs in their attempts toward reemployment. The results of the study can be used to inform organizational leaders of the need for greater emphasis on programs offering solutions to older female workers seeking reemployment. The study promotes potential positive social change by informing organizational leaders of the experiences of women over 50 who had experienced involuntary job loss.

Streszczenie:
This qualitative study investigated the extent to which a diverse sub-set of e-learning designers were aware of UX principles and practices, where their e-learning design practices overlapped with established UX practices, and where UX principles might benefit e-learning designers. E-learning has grown dramatically as an area of focus in instructional design within the last decade and a half. This growth suggests a need for a better understanding of design tools, concepts and principles that can guide an e-learning designer to design better and more effective instruction. One field of design that has potentially had an impact on e-learning design recently is user experience (UX) design. Both fields of UX and e-learning are concerned with designing interactions with technology, but while there are some shared ideas and terms between the two, there has been no research into the perceptions and understanding of UX tools by practicing instructional designers. Nine professional e-learning designers were interviewed to understand their perspective and experience. The findings of this study resulted in four themes and several subthemes. In general the participants of the study were not familiar with the formal practices of UX design. Many were also not familiar with several of the seminal works of the UX design field. The emergent themes suggest there are similar concerns between UX design and e-learning design. There were varying perceptions of the role of an e-learning designer as well as a broad spectrum of perception of what qualifies as good e-learning design. Participants reported the e-learning design field has numerous practitioners who lack formal training in instructional design principles in addition to limited training in other design disciplines. Participants also discussed constraints that could impact their ability to embrace UX practices. Findings suggest e-learning design practitioners and students of the field would likely benefit from a greater awareness of, or even formal training in UX practices. Additional research into the shared practices of UX and e-learning design could also likely open new opportunities to advance the practice of e-learning design.

Rigby, Selane. "Cancer : emotional experiences". Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/123527/.

Streszczenie:
Cancer can have major implications for those who receive a diagnosis, not only as a result of its physical impact, but its emotional one. The emotional impact can not only be distressing in itself, it can also affect behaviour and therefore, has been linked to poorer treatment adherence. The experience of difficult self-directed emotions, such as guilt, shame and disgust have provoked particular interest, particularly due to their association with rejection and avoidance. Therefore, insight into how and when these emotions are experienced within the cancer treatment journey are important to understand, in order that optimum support can be provided. The first paper is a thematic synthesis that explores the emotional experiences of people undergoing cancer treatment with a curative intent. The synthesis is structured by a sequential framework of four key transition points within the cancer journey, and the emotional experiences synthesised within each one. The temporal transition points were: Being diagnosed and facing treatment; Getting rid of cancer; Changed body and stigma; Reflections on the emotional journey having completed treatment. The synthesis demonstrates how emotions and feelings evolve and change in type, frequency and intensity across the curative cancer journey. The second study uses narrative analysis methodology to explore difficult self-directed emotions throughout cancer treatment and into recovery. The analysis focuses on how and when the emotions of disgust, guilt, shame and fear arise, as well as resulting changes to the sense of self. The findings demonstrate how many factors, such as relationships, current stressors, past experiences and resources (personal and systemic) can impact on emotional experiences. The critical appraisal focuses on strengths and weaknesses of the studies, particularly in relational to emotional research considerations more generally.

The purpose of knowledge management activities and practice is to enhance the ability to utilize the knowledge and experiences that exist embedded in the organization. Knowledge management is absolutely essential for the success of knowledge intensive project-oriented organizations like construction, and management should arguably put adequate resources in motion to facilitate and foster knowledge utilization on an organizational level. Even so, knowledge utilization has no real value to the organization unless project-participants, who are in need of useful knowledge receive it, accept it, utilize it and also re-apply it. We have investigated four separate subjects relating to these issues and found that all of them provide substantial possibilities for enhancing knowledge utilization in this knowledge intensive context. Leadership behavior, Mentorships, Portal solutions and virtual communication are addressed separately both theoretically and empirically. Measures and actions are presented as recommendations and cover a wide angel of approaches. The recommendation section is related to how a construction firm might improve knowledge- planning, development and sharing of knowledge. Some measures are easy, others could be more challenging to implement. Management is ultimately responsible for deciding upon which measures to take into account and how they should be both prioritized and customized to fit the organization under scrutiny. Issues illuminated through literature do vary from real life experience, and even though most theoretical implications seem rooted in reality they do differentiate. In essence we narrow it down to whether or not knowledge management should be deliberately controlled by management or on the other hand more emergent and culturally handled. By purposely placement of reflection questions throughout the study we try to spark the readers thought processing and reflection, in addition to visualize that there aren’t many rights or wrongs when assessing knowledge management. As for the project thesis we do not want to signal that we propose direct answers to our research question. We discuss the subjects, raise awareness, illuminate knowledge management issues and provide the reader with alternatives and measures based on both literature- and empirical research.

Streszczenie:
The meaning and experience of ‘empathy’ was investigated for this thesis. A mixed approach was utilized, with a strong qualitative accent. There was evidence of an ‘intuitive’ social understanding which appears to be theoretically and experientially distinct from the two prevailing models of empathic understandings (intellectual, or explicit simulation theories; and sympathetic, or implicit simulation theories). Phenomenological views on intersubjectivity were the principal interpretative framework. The first Chapter reviews two main theoretical meanings of empathy: empathy-as-knowing, or understanding someone’s experience (empathy), and empathy-as-responding to someone’s experience (sympathy). The second Chapter describes the study of the folk psychology stories and definitions of ‘empathy’; and their resemblance to the various theoretical meanings. The third Chapter summarizes Edith Stein’s phenomenological views about empathy-as-knowing; and compares these views with more contemporary approaches. The fourth Chapter describes the study of the essential qualities of the experiences of ‘insight into’ the experiences of another (resonance), alongside experiences of feeling understood by another (reception). Social understandings happened by thinking, listening, perceiving and experiencing. The fifth Chapter describes the study where pairs of participants were invited to share their stories of a prior happy experience with each other, and then to scrutinize their recent interpersonal understandings during joint ‘cued-recall’ interviews. There were intuitive, sympathetic and imaginative social understandings. The sixth Chapter is an overview of the overall findings associated with sympathetic, intellectual, and intuitive understandings.

This is a collection of texts that speak of experiences of the education of one woman, me. I have learned more of who I am. This autoethnography seeks to ground personal experiences in social and cultural contexts. I seek to tell truthfully and deeply of personal experiences. I draw upon others‟ voices to legitimate mine. The words of others facilitate my own. I come to realise that I do belong in this work; the work takes form and from this I take form. I find a home in this work. This work is an educational experience. Stories of emotions founder education. Reflective and reflexive journal writing have been stimuli. Educative experiences are communicated in both content and forms of my stories. I believe meanings are always in process. Process affects the stories told, story-tellers and those listening. Meanings are not inherent but produced and reproduced challenged by the communities in which they are practised and their languages. The meanings I attribute to the person I am, my personal experiences, are those I construct from the groups to which I do and do not belong. My emotions drive the meanings I experience, particularly in relation to experiences of education.

Streszczenie:
The term ‘consumption experience’ has become ubiquitous in marketing and consumer research circles. In this thesis I question the appropriateness of this canonical term. In its stead I employ the non-dualistic term ‘experiaction’, coined by an ecological psychologist, which points to the functional inseparability of experiencing and actions. I adopt a field-theoretical, phenomenologically-informed, perspective, whilst participating in, analysing, and writing about ten video-recorded research conversations. Likewise I address the various spin-off texts deriving from the initial conversations, such as transcripts and viewing-logs. I show that ‘field’-embedded individuals notice and act on many aspects of their immediate micro-environments, including their own intra-personal goings-on and expressive outputs. Through data analysis I identify five categories of regulable variables that an individual can act on as s/he seeks to regulate his/her sensing, relative to his/her reference value(s). Seen through this cybernetic lens, momentary human being comprises of a cyclical, ongoing process of self-regulation, in which individuals expediently employ and/or modify accessible resources and goings-on, in the service of seeking to actualise their currently-preferred, or expected, states-of-being, and to minimise unwelcome deviations therefrom. This thesis challenges the prevalent notion that when people consume particular products/services these offerings sponsor offering-dedicated experiences - what some people describe as ‘consumption experiences’. The concept of experiaction, in contrast, comprises of an ongoing interaction between a person and his/her micro-environment, in which the individual attends to, and acts on, whichever aspect(s) of his/her 360°-‘inner’-‘outer’-‘field’ become(s) momentarily salient to him/her, within the parameters imposed by his/her currently-sustained reference value(s).

The appropriate framework to capture and share location information with mobile applications enable the development of interfaces and interface techniques that empower users to obtain and share information on the go. As such, the work in this thesis makes two major contributions. First is the SeeVT framework, a locative backbone that uses currently-available data and equipment in the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg VA environments (e.g., wireless signal triangulation, GPS signals) to make available to applications the location of the device in use. Applications built on this framework have available knowledge of the region in which the userâ s device is located. Second is a set of four applications built on the SeeVT framework: SeeVT â Alumni Edition (a guide for alumni returning to campus, often after lengthy absences), the Newman Project (a library information system for finding books and other library resources), VTAssist (a information sharing system for disabled users), and SeeVT-Art (a guide for users in our local inn and conference center to learn about the art on display). Key in this contribution is our identification and discussion of three interface techniques that emerged from our development efforts: an images-first presentation of information, a lightweight mobile augmented reality style of interaction, and locative content affordances that provide ways to quickly input focused types of information in mobile situations.

This thesis examines the home numeracy environment, firstly as a whole concept and then more in-depth of one area of the home numeracy environment, number books. The home numeracy environment section starts by presenting a systematic review of the home numeracy environment literature and draws conclusions about the inconsistency of the results. The studies presented in this section investigate both methodological and theoretical questions surrounding the home numeracy environment. A novel text message method to measure the home numeracy environment is presented and the relationship between three different measures of the home numeracy environment (questionnaire, observation and text messages) is investigated, as well as their relationships to mathematics skills. This section has two key findings: firstly the self-report measures of the home numeracy environment are not related to the observation measure and secondly all three measures (apart from child number talk in the observation) were not related to mathematics skills. The second section of this thesis focuses on number books. Number books are often used in the home to teach young children number symbols. They primarily use multiple concrete pictures, but the benefits (or costs) to using these types of images are not known. The next three studies investigate the use of abstract and concrete images to teach children number symbols using an artificial symbol learning paradigm. It is concluded that there is a cost to using multiple representations when teaching children number symbols, and therefore number books should use a single picture throughout for children to benefit the most from the book. Overall the findings from this thesis show that the home numeracy environment is very broad and future research should change the way the home numeracy environment is measured and conduct more in-depth analysis of areas of the home numeracy environment.

Streszczenie:
The brand behind the garment is what gives the product popularity, relevance to the consumer, and overall profitability. As time passes, markets are becoming flooded with more brands that inherently provide the commodities. As a result, fashion marketers must put more time and investment into stipulating ways for which their brand can reach a select target consumer and enhance repeat purchase intentions with their competitive differentiations. As their efforts engage, an experiential perspective emerges in the fashion industry. By comparing fashion brands and their different distribution channels, the objectives of this study are to identify consumers’ perceptions of fashion brand experience dimensions and experience types, and to investigate the effect of brand experience dimensions and types on brand resonance. Upon extending Schmitt and Brakus, Schmitt, and Zarantonello’s experience dimensions and types, in conjunction with Keller’s brand resonance model, 12 out of 20 hypotheses confirm the significant impact of consumers experiences on brand resonance by analyzing the data (n = 374) from a university in the United States. Sensory and affective experiences are primary factors for establishing fashion brand association, while cognitive and relational driven experiences lead to establishing fashion brand loyalty. Sensory, affective, and relational experiences affect both product and store type experiences, while only product experience affects brand resonance. With the depiction of different brand effects, this study concludes that while Forever 21 may focus on relational experiences with the consumer, Gap utilizes positive cognitive experiences to develop a link to brand loyalty and fashion product reliability.

Streszczenie:
This study analyzes and reports on the characteristics of writing-triggered peak experience and other positive human experiences and explores some possible factors that can bring about such moments. Three basic questions were explored: Can writing trigger peak experience and other positive human experiences? How are writing-triggered peak experience and other positive human experiences best described? What factors influence the occurrence of writing-triggered peak experience and other positive human experiences? Participants were asked to write about their happiest moment in writing. The sample consisted of 270 students enrolled in undergraduate writing classes at a major southwestern university. Of 270 participants, 119(44%) reported having had at least one peak experience or similar positive human experience as a result of writing. Protocols reporting peak experience and other positive human experiences in writing were analyzed for content, yielding a total of 14 descriptive attributes. The participants described their writing experiences as flow of the words, the process of writing is its own reward, peak performance, clarity, disappearance of negative states of mind, and enhanced sense of power and personal worth. Content analysis also yielded 13 possible triggers of peak experience and other positive human experiences including self-expression, realization, free writing, use of writing for introspection, and creative and inspirational writing. In addition, personal orientation was explored as a possible trigger of peak experience and other positive human experiences using a 16-item questionnaire. Factor analysis results yielded four factors: (1) aesthetic creative expressive writing, (2) writing as a thinking and problem solving tool (3) self-discovery, and (4) not interested in writing. Factor one accounted for the highest variance (37%). The common elements in this factor were expressive writing, self-related writing and creative poetic writing with poetic and creative writing having the highest loading.

This study explores the experiences of attending a therapeutic group from the perspective of the group participants who have a severe and enduring mental illness. The study aims to illuminate previously hidden personal experiences of the psychological processes involved in engaging with a therapeutic group, which appear absent from mental health literature and research. This qualitative research involved nine secondary care mental health service users, five men and four women, aged from thirty to seventy, who took part in semistructured interviews which were transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The analysed data is therefore ideographic, from a bottom-up perspective, consisting of the researcher’s interpretations of the participants’ experiences. The research participants attended a range of facilitated therapeutic groups which were run for several months or more and which did not include agenda-led, time-limited psycho-education and behavioural groups. An independent audit of themes was included to increase validity. Three superordinate themes emerged: ‘Emerging from the Maelstrom’; ‘Unveiling’ and ‘Resoluteness in Life’, and each superordinate theme consists of several interrelated subordinate themes. Participants experienced their groups as ‘sanctuaries’ and presented their own recovery more positively than their group peers. Participants’ experiences included challenging their group facilitators’ leadership skills and enacting recovery and independence from their group. Participants experienced managing the intrusion of mental health symptoms and developed shared strategies to deal with feelings of invalidation, allowing them to become future focused and able to fulfil their goals. Participants’ experiences of their therapeutic groups are considered in relation to literature, research findings and theoretical models applied to mental health. Limitations, further research and clinical implications for group facilitators are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Fast fashion retailers have faced a difficulty in translating in-store experiences to online experiences. Although online shopping is increasing, the in-store shopping is still very important for a superior shopping experience. Technology has had a major impact in making multichanneling retail more consistent, although there are gaps that technology can not fill. This study attempted to measure how consistent the customer experiences were online and in-store. Shopping experiences were measured with different concepts such as: flow, usability, interactivity, atmospherics and tactility. These concepts were measured separately in-store and online, in order to be compared. The purpose was to find out which concept is inconsistent so the authors could make recommendations for improvement to fast fashion retailers. The research approach was a mixed method approach and the chosen research design was cross sectional, using quantitative research to corroborate qualitative research findings. The results from a quantitative questionnaire of 263 experienced fast fashion consumers in Sweden show that the consistency varies between the concepts. The qualitative study was done at two occasions on a sample of six interviewees in each focus group, and gave a deeper understanding for why the shopping experience was or wasn't consistent. The qualitative results varied amongst the individuals and show that reasons for being inconsistent are intrusive salesmen, insufficient size measuring tools, long queues, lack of tactility and the most interesting of all: making better return and ordering policies. The future lies in making it easier to order online, in order for the consumer to be able to experience the product in real life, through staff-free fitting rooms and showrooms and such, rather than making the experience better online. The future seems to lie in solving the reverse of the start point of this study, namely translating online to in-store experiences.

Streszczenie:

This study is an exploration into the profound, life-altering experiences that a small sampling of mothers had while giving birth. The primary question addressed is "What is the nature of experiences that can occur for the mother during childbirth?" A group of 15 mothers in the United States was asked to share the experiences they had during childbirth, highlighting those elements that they define as profound, spiritual, transformational, and/or empowering.

The research was conducted as a narrative and visual arts inquiry, using an initial survey, semi-structured interviews, and an art creation process to produce visual expressions of experiences. Also included is an autobiographical element created from the researcher's experiences of childbirth. While the individual experiences varied, the stories revealed eight general themes that are explored using elements of the narratives and a coding of the art images, resulting in several trends. Through narrative and art, the individual experiences of the mothers are shared, emergent themes are analyzed, and a larger picture of profound childbirth experiences is shown. The nature of profound experiences during birth is highlighted in this study, as are the universal elements of birth.

Coetzee, Zelmari. "Exploring consumer experiences in guest houses in South Africa : an experience economy approach". Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/57298.

Streszczenie:
In the last few years, the South African tourism industry grew steadily, and future growth is expected until 2020. Therefore, the sector anticipates an increased number of travellers that will use accommodation services in the next few years. However, very few South African guest houses operate at full occupancy due to the wide range of accommodation choices available, and therefore lose potential revenue. In light of the millions of potential guests, guest houses should offer a distinctive, meaningful guest house service to the modern-day guest who not only wants to feel, experience and be excited, but is also willing to pay for a memorable time. It is suggested that guest house operators take note of this era characterised by the principles of the experience economy, advocating that they apply them to their businesses by staging entertaining, educational, escapist and aesthetical opportunities to lead to satisfaction and quality. This study used a quantitative, explorative and descriptive research design to identify, describe and evaluate guests lodging experiences in guest houses in South Africa; and to determine the current application of the experience economy concepts. Fieldworkers employed purposive and snowball sampling to collect cross-sectional data from 340 guests and 39 guest house managers who completed different Likert scale questionnaires. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse data. Guest profiles were well spread over the demographic categories; age, gender, income, repeat or first-time guests and reason for travel (business/pleasure). The aesthetics dimension of the guest house proved most prevalent, followed by escapism, entertainment and education. The dimensions, escapism, entertainment and education should become the focus and must be intentionally created to improve guests experiences. The consequences dimensions of the experience all measured high. Satisfaction was most prevalent followed by value, arousal and memory constructs. Overall, guest houses are not creating specialised experiences for guests and much room for improvement exists, except for the aesthetic dimension that should be maintained. Unfortunately, guest house managers and guests were loath to participate in providing information and this affected the potential of the study. Hence it is suggested that alternative ways be found to collect data from guest houses for research purposes that would ensure insight that would assist in enhancing offerings in the guest house industry.

Sime, Caroline Ann. "Men’s experiences of having breast cancer : a comparison with women’s experiences". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3232/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Background: In the UK, men with breast cancer account for1% of all new cases of breast cancer with only 341 men receiving this diagnosis throughout the UK in 2008 (Cancer Research, 2010b). There is a lack of research on all aspects of men with breast cancer in large part due to the rarity of the disease. However it is the psychosocial effects of receiving a breast cancer diagnosis, and the subsequent support available to men, that has in particular been ignored. To date, no study compares men’s and women’s experiences of having breast cancer. Furthermore, breast cancer is arguably at the most extreme ‘female’ end of a spectrum of illnesses that men can experience, and is likely to pose particular challenges for men’s identities, which may have profound implications for their use of health services, attitudes to treatment and living beyond their cancer diagnosis. The aim of this study therefore is to compare men’s and women’s experiences of having breast cancer and what effect, if any, having a ‘female’ cancer has on a man’s identity. Methods: The data on men’s experiences of breast cancer derive from interviews with 19 men with breast cancer in which semi-structured questions and prompts explored: what prompted them to seek help for their breast symptom; their own reactions to having breast cancer; the reactions of family, friends, colleagues and health professionals; their experience of treatment; the embodied effects of treatment and living beyond their breast cancer diagnosis. These data were collected using the methods employed by researchers at the Health Experiences Research Group in Oxford, see www.healthtalkonline.org, so that a) they could contribute towards a new module on men’s experiences of breast cancer, and b) they could be compared with existing interviews on women’s experiences of breast cancer. The transcripts of 23 interviews with women who had breast cancer were made available for secondary analysis. The interviews with men with breast cancer were undertaken in such a way that direct comparison was possible. Analysis of both collections was undertaken using the framework approach to compare the men’s and women’s experiences of having breast cancer. Findings: The findings demonstrated both similarities and differences between men’s and women’s experiences of having breast cancer. First, the help-seeking practices of the men and women were found to be similar. The men were largely ignorant that men could get breast cancer, but this did not prevent some from attending their doctor. In turn, knowing that women can get breast cancer did not ensure women sought help for their breast symptom straight away. Help-seeking was found to be a complex process for both men and women that shared some push/pull elements that influenced their help-seeking. The disclosure practices of the men and women were found to be similar and changed over time. Men used ‘strategic announcing’ to educate other men of the risk of breast cancer in men. The women in this study changed their disclosure behaviour to either protect their families from their illness, or themselves from negative encounters with people. The men also described feeling they had to disclose their illness when treatment side effects made them look ill, whereas some women described using aids such as wigs and prostheses to conceal changes in their appearance. Contrasting experiences of healthcare were reported by men and women. The women were often given a treatment choice, could access information at different points throughout their treatment and had a variety of support networks. In contrast, the men were given few choices in their treatment, little or female-specific information, and reported limited sources of support. The men recounted negative experiences in the clinic and ward setting. They were mistaken as supporters not as the patient, experienced suspicion from female patients and were not given adequate resources to manage their treatment. In contrast, most women had positive experiences during their treatment and felt supported within the healthcare environment. There was some evidence to suggest the effect on their closest relationships was similar for men and women with breast cancer. Most married men and women suggested their relationships had remained good and in some cases improved, adapting to physical changes and expressing their affection in other ways. The wives of men with breast cancer played a key role during their experiences of help-seeking, disclosure, offering support and retrieving information. Most of the men in this study appeared to successfully renegotiate their masculine identities to incorporate their breast cancer experiences. Some men felt their new role was to educate and ‘spread the word’ that men can, and do, develop breast cancer. A renegotiated traditional male stereotype was constructed including traditionally female characteristics to present an identity that enabled the men to cope with negative experiences within their communities and the healthcare setting. Conclusions: There are similarities in the experiences of men and women with breast cancer. However, a lack of awareness men can develop breast cancer and the rarity of the disease has led to the development of female specific services and treatment. Greater social awareness and gender-sensitive healthcare is necessary to improve the experiences of men with breast cancer.

Streszczenie:
This thesis consists of two volumes submitted towards the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Volume I comprises three research chapters. The first presents a metasynthesis of fifteen studies of women's experiences of depression. Eight themes and an underlying concept, 'The Conflicted Self, reflect the complexity of depression for women. The second is an empirical research project which explored women's experiences of relationships during recovery from depression. Analysis identified the women were integrated within relationships which could negatively and positively impact upon their depression and recovery. The third is a public dissemination document of these chapters. Volume II comprises five clinical practice reports. The first presents two formulations of James, a 26 year-old man experiencing a number of difficulties related to underlying low self-esteem. The second presents an audit of the care provided by a mental health service to people with psychosis. The third presents a single-case experimental design of Jasminder, a 10 year-old non-verbal girl with ASD displaying self-injurious behaviour. The fourth presents a case study of Emily, a 16 year-old girl experiencing anxiety, low mood, self- harm, and OCD. The fifth presents an abstract of an oral presentation of Jane, a 28 year-old woman experiencing difficulties related to underlying emotional instability.

Streszczenie:
'The early phase of psychosis is understood to be formative in biological, psychological, and social terms, thus affording major opportunities for secondary prevention' (Birchwood & Fiorillo, 2000, p.182). The current thesis considers the experience of early psychosis and how variables of social cognition, trauma and dissociation, influence this crucial and formative period. Chapter I presents a systematic literature review that explores affect perception in early psychosis. The review suggests the presence of an affect perception deficit in early psychosis, which may be more pronounced for perception of negative emotions. In exploring the nature and impact of an affect perception deficit in early psychosis, it is noted that further research is needed to fully understand the implications. However, affect perception deficit in early psychosis may be improved through psychological interventions. Chapter II presents an empirical paper that explores the relationship between trauma, dissociation and early psychosis, and specifically whether dissociation mediates the relationship between experience of trauma and early psychosis. Results indicated that first episode psychosis clients reported significantly greater experiences of trauma and dissociation, and that correlations between trauma experiences and dissociative symptoms in the first episode psychosis group were stronger compared to a healthy control group. Furthermore, dissociation positively mediated the relationship between experience of trauma and first episode psychosis. Results are discussed in relation to existing evidence and theoretical models. Considerations for future research and clinical implications are also discussed. Chapter III presents a reflective paper, which considers the researcher’s experiences of conducting research in the area of early psychosis. Particular attention is given to the discussion of ethical and methodological considerations in relation to undertaking research in the context of current NHS Early Intervention for Psychosis services.

Mobile phones are becoming more and more complex in terms of both hardware and software. Linux Mobile, as a term covering both the kernel and its surrounding components that together form the operating system, is said to have the potential to become the de-facto standard operating system for mobile phones and an enabler for advanced future mobile services. This master thesis evaluates key aspects and central mechanisms of the Linux kernel and how it supports its surrounding hardware and software components in a flexible manner. The main work consisted of investigating the necessary kernel subsystems, with focus on the latest major kernel release for as being able to provide the demanded real-time responsiveness for mobile phones. Further, the typical hardware architecture for this form factor is examined and discussed with focus on the important aspects of responsibility, power management, and memory. The combination of the hardware and the flexibility of Linux is demonstrated through the booting process. Both major commercial and open source development platforms are investigated to elaborate on the opportunities of employing Linux as an enabler for advanced mobile services. The attempt of building a cross platform tool chain as a basis for a development platform was carried out with only partial success. It is described with the results achieved and steps planned. Based on the topics discussed and the results achieved the thesis is concluded with a discussion of whether Linux Mobile has the potential to become the de-facto standard mobile operating system, and what challenges and opportunities that are brought along with it.

Streszczenie:
There is a lack of attention to the emotional and the physical aspects of communication in how we up to now have been approaching communication between people in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). As designers of digital communication tools we need to consider altering the underlying model for communication that has been prevailing in HCI: the information transfer model. Communication is about so much more than transferring information. It is about getting to know yourself, who you are and what part you play in the communication as it unfolds. It is also about the experience of a communication process, what it feels like, how that feeling changes, when it changes, why and perhaps by whom the process is initiated, altered, or disrupted. The idea of Affective Loop experiences in design aims to create new expressive and experiential media for whole users, embodied with the social and physical world they live in, and where communication not only is about getting the message across but also about living the experience of communication - feeling it. An Affective Loop experience is an emerging, in the moment, emotional experience where the inner emotional experience, the situation at hand and the social and physical context act together, to create for one complete embodied experience. The loop perspective comes from how this experience takes place in communication and how there is a rhythmic pattern in communication where those involved take turns in both expressing themselves and standing back interpreting the moment. To allow for Affective Loop experiences with or through a computer system, the user needs to be allowed to express herself in rich personal ways involving our many ways of expressing and sensing emotions – muscles tensions, facial expressions and more. For the user to become further engaged in interaction, the computer system needs the capability to return relevant, either diminishing, enforcing or disruptive feedback to those emotions expressed by the user so that the she wants to continue express herself by either strengthening, changing or keeping her expression. We describe how we used the idea of Affective Loop experiences as a conceptual tool to navigate a design space of gestural input combined with rich instant feedback. In our design journey, we created two systems, eMoto and FriendSense.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the menopausal experiences of a non-clinical sample of lesbians living in Australia. Research on menopause to date has largely been conducted from a medicalised and heterosexual perspective: thus lesbians’ experiences remain unknown and invisible. Using a qualitative feminist multiple method research methodology combining content analysis and questionnaire/interview research, two hundred questionnaires were posted upon request to self-identified lesbians living in every Australian state and territory. Follow up in-depth interviews were conducted with twenty lesbians. Responses were grouped into four major themes: body image, sex and sexuality, hormone replacement therapy and health services and homophobia. The findings show that lesbians at menopause face some different and additional issues from those experienced by heterosexual midlife women. For many of the study participants, commonly discussed concerns at menopause such as weight gain and other physical signs of ageing, decreased fertility, lack of libido, sexual difficulties and hormone replacement therapy were of little relevance and importance. Lesbians in this study frequently raised other issues such as the universal assumption of heterosexuality and homophobia experienced when interacting with health professionals, which led to less than satisfactory health care and reinforced feelings of invisibility. In the Conclusion I argue that the study participants' views and experiences challenge negative, stereotypical views of both lesbians and menopause. The data thus add a new dimension to the presently narrow, heterosexist and medicalised view of women at midlife and contribute new knowledge to the body of literature on menopause. This thesis is a first important step in recording the experiences of lesbians regarding menopause in Australia. I include recommendations for further research in the area of lesbian health and improved practice, and discuss old and new obstacles lesbians face in a heteropatriarchal society in which lesbians continue to be invisible.

Streszczenie:
Casual-Leisure Search describes any behaviour that allows people to express and satisfy hedonistic needs rather than information needs as part of the information-seeking process. For example, individuals who search their social media universe for hours after a long day at work may do so out of curiosity, to relax or for fun (e.g. exploring for the experience). Studies have shown that classical information seeking (IS) and interactive information retrieval models (IIR) have failed to represent them because they were created observing people in work related scenarios, and assuming that search is always a rational decision making process and with an extrinsic utilitarian value. The research described in this PhD work investigates IIR from the perspective of the psychological curiosity and leisure information seeking behaviour. Traditional search engines focus the user experience on satisfying users with topically relevant information (i.e. quick lookup search and then moving on), but they are limited supporting the discovery of unknown information because they fail to entice and engage users exploration as proxy to seek enjoyment both in leisure and work scenarios. The research described increases understanding of the role that curiosity plays in IIR and investigates the merits of incorporating the characteristics and function of human curiosity in the design of IIR systems. The research is grounded by the theoretical understanding of how human curiosity works. A review of appropriate psychological curiosity literature offers a means to critique existing IIR tools and a basis from which to start designing novel curiosity driven search tools. In the first experimental work, this research compared IIR behaviour between a standard query response paradigm and a curiosity driven search map prototype using social media content, and attempts to learn lessons from the behaviour that people show in everyday casual-leisure search scenarios. In the second experiment, this research contrast IIR behaviour between standard query-response paradigm and a curious adaptation of query-response paradigm using search notifications or recommendations for news reading in a social media leisure search scenario. The tools are evaluated to determine the usefulness of incorporating curiosity in the design of IIR systems, to learn about the effect in user engagement, how users exploration is increase when motivated by a hedonistic need, and then elaborate a set of design recommendations to enhance the search experience in leisure scenarios.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Families of people with schizophrenia often experience difficult challenges when it comes to dealing with this illness. Contemporary researchers suggest that families often take on the task of caring for their ill relatives with limited resources and support. Mental health professionals often fail to include the families in the treatment of their relatives. Although psychoeducation has been shown to be an important process that helps not only the families but relatives as well, mental health professionals commonly do not involve families in such activities. This study explored the experiences of families of people with schizophrenia and their subsequent contact with mental health professionals, as well as their understanding of schizophrenia as a mental disorder. To this end, a small sample of 10 families (four Xhosa speaking families as well as six Coloured families) was drawn in the Western Cape area on a convenience basis. In each case a family caregiver was interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were content analyzed. The findings of the study indicate that families find it difficult to deal with their ill relatives. Families often experience stigma-related incidents because of their relatives. They feel isolated and alone. Families often yearn to receive more information about the illness of their relatives. Also, the contact between mental health professionals and families was reported to be minimal at best. Family members reported that mental health professionals do not include them in the treatment process. Recommendations for further research and practice are made.

The purpose of this project is to explore potential social cognitive and psychosocial predictors of lifestyle changes, including diet and physical activity behaviors, in a sample of colorectal cancer survivors who are at high risk of developing a second colorectal cancer. Participants, recruited from Georgetown Universityâ s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, are colorectal cancer survivors from families at high or confirmed risk of having a hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome. Results indicate that, at the bivariate level, many of the psychosocial and social cognitive variables of interest are significantly associated with one another as well as with various health behaviors and health behavior changes. Correlational data indicate that lower distress is associated with higher psychosocial functioning, self-efficacy, and self-regulatory ability. In addition, the data also suggest that individuals with higher self-efficacy display higher self-regulation and more positive outcome expectations related to health behaviors. Overall, participants were more likely to increase healthy behaviors or remain consistent with moderately healthy lifestyles practiced prior to their colorectal cancer diagnosis and treatment, and decrease unhealthy behaviors. Implications and directions for future research are discussed within the paper.

The expressive nature of typing has been mostly neglected in research. The possibilities of our full expressive selves are not included in typing experiences. The aim of this thesis is to explore the expressive qualities and experiences of typing and open up new opportunities and possibilities for interaction designers. To fulfil this aim, the qualities of typing itself as a medium are investigated, as well as how handwriting can be used as inspiration and guidance to investigate the potential expressive qualities of typing. The result of this investigation showed how typing possesses personal, behavioral and emotional expressions. Additionally, the investigation lead to the discovery of how typing possesses impressionable experiences. These impressions changed the feeling while typing, could make the user write in a particular way and be used as an expressive tool to another person.

The purpose of the study is to explore students’ experiences of WebCT at the University of Pretoria. In order to find out about these experiences, the Department of Telematic Learning and Education Innovation administered a web-based survey to students at the University of Pretoria. At the end of each semester students are requested to complete WebCT Experience Survey voluntarily. The WebCT Experience Survey includes both qualitative and quantitative data for research (TLEI Annual Report, 2003). The focus of this research is more on qualitative data which includes the open-ended questions. The researcher used conceptual analysis to evaluate the open-ended questions in the survey (Busch et al., 2005). The challenges and benefits were coded for their frequency and relevance. The researcher then identified codes to identify the benefits and challenges of students using WebCT. The findings of the research were grouped in terms of technical, facilitation and content issues. The study indicates that students benefited from using WebCT.

Walker, Felicity. "Experiences of military transition". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/76677/.

Streszczenie:
Periods of military transition contain unique experiences. For those serving this includes the transition to military deployment, and upon leaving the armed forces, this includes the transition into civilian life. Given the implementation of Britain’s armed forces community covenant, which aims to bridge the gap between military and civilian communities, further exploration of the needs of military personnel is required. This thesis informs understanding of military transition experiences at a time when, following the recent restructuring of the UK armed forces the number of veterans, reservist personnel and their families requiring care from the National Health Service is likely to increase significantly. Chapter one is a critical review of the qualitative research exploring the influence of military deployment on women military spouses. Following both database and manual searches twelve studies were included and reviewed. Spouses described complex experiences that contained both challenges and opportunities for positive growth. Differences between spouses of those from reserve or regular armed forces are explored. The review highlights the heterogeneity of the population and the need to modify current conceptualisations of deployment experiences, to understand the complexity of individual needs. Suggestions for future research are discussed. Chapter two is a qualitative research study that explored Army veterans’ lived experiences of relationships built with military comrades, and how these might have influenced the transition into civilian life. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, it provides an in-depth account of military relational experiences and the integral role that these experiences had in the formation and maintenance of military identity. Implications for future research, alongside suggestions for clinical practice and service development are discussed. Chapter three is reflective account, exploring the interface between the researcher’s self and the research process. It explores the position of the researcher and the parallels between the research topic and their own impending professional transition into qualified life.

Streszczenie:
Every woman, if she lives long enough, will experience perimenopause, the time period leading up to menopause when hormonal changes often cause physical, and sometimes emotional, changes. Whilst menopause has been extensively investigated perimenopause has received little attention and much of the existing research has been conducted by health professionals, with often only a narrow focus. In addition, the experience of women living through perimenopause is largely missing. Knowledge of such experiences can assist in understanding the meaning that perimenopause has for women, and can also assist in providing insight into the effectiveness of current models of care and management. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of Western Australian women living through perimenopause. A phenomenological approach, specifically, van Manen’s human sciences (2017) and phenomenology of practice (2014) approaches, were used to collect and analyse qualitative data from eighteen women. van Manen’s (2017) four existentials, namely corporeality, temporality, spatiality and relationality, were used as a reflective lens during the exploration and organisation of the data, resulting in the generation of themes within the four lifeworld existentials. A feminist framework also guided development of the research design and feminist theories, along with Leder’s (1990) essay on the absent body in everyday life, provided support for the discussion of the findings. The women described their perimenopausal experiences in terms of challenges, and in terms of agency. Challenges related to the body, the environment, and the attitudes of spouses and other family members. The attitude and care provision of medical doctors was also viewed as a challenge by many women. However, the women demonstrated agency by finding alternative sources of care and ways of coping with their symptoms, by drawing on their mothers’ experiences to improve their own, and by seeking valuable friendships in which to safely discuss perimenopause. The stories of the women demonstrated that the current medical model of care and management does not fit the needs of contemporary perimenopausal women. There is also a general lack of experiential information about perimenopause, and this has resulted in an incomplete and incorrect picture of perimenopause. In addition, adequate support structures for perimenopausal women are missing. Women demonstrate agency, however, by seeking alternative support structures and driving their own changes to improve their midlife health.

Ickes, Alison. "Can Spiritual Experiences Promote Empathy in the Context of Past Adverse Childhood Experiences?" Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2020. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/527.

Streszczenie:
Previous research suggests that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can greatly impact a child’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing later in life. ACE exposure has been associated with lower levels of empathy in the literature. Spirituality is often associated with a number of positive outcomes, including those associated with empathy, like prosocial behaviors. The present study examines spirituality as a buffer against reduced empathy in those with exposure to adverse events in childhood. Participants for this study were recruited through the SONA research platform at East Tennessee State University as part of a larger research project, the REACH (Religions, Emotions, and Current Health) study. Results of this study did not support the working hypotheses that we would find a negative correlation between ACEs and empathy, as well as a moderation relationship via spirituality between ACEs and empathy. However, we did find that empathy was positively associated with spirituality, and ACEs were negatively associated with spirituality. Future research should dig deeper into the relationship between ACEs and empathy, as well as search for other possible protective factors for the effects of ACEs.
