Streszczenie:
This chapter examines the phenomenon of waiting and, in particular, the extreme experience of prison time doing hard labor in the Jim Crow South. The forms of waiting that are created musically echo the tension experienced both by loved ones waiting for someone’s return and by the prisoner enduring the unbearable cruelty of time at Parchman Farm or as a leased convict. The discussion culminates in an analysis of the “extreme present” of enduring physical and emotional pain echoed in blues that depict the experience of addiction and withdrawal, tying together the temporality of waiting with attempts to limit suffering by dwelling in the present. Key to the argument are analyses of Muddy Waters’s “Long Distance Call,” Bessie Smith’s “In the House Blues,” and Tommy Johnson’s “Canned Heat Blues.”

Streszczenie:
Whereas much theology of religions regards ‘the other’ as a problem to be solved, this book begins with a Church called to witness to its faith in a multicultural world by practising a generous yet risky hospitality. A theology of dialogue takes its rise from the Christian experience of being-in-dialogue. Taking its rise from the biblical narrative of encounter, call, and response, such a theology cannot be fully understood without reference to the matrix of faith that Christians share in complex ways with the Jewish people. The contemporary experience of the Shoah, the dominating religious event of the twentieth century, has complexified that relationship and left an indelible mark on the religious sensibility of both Jews and Christians. Engaging with a range of thinkers, from Heschel, Levinas, and Edith Stein who were all deeply affected by the Shoah, to Metz, Panikkar, and Rowan Williams, who are always pressing the limits of what can and cannot be said with integrity about the self-revealing Word of God, this book shows how Judaism is a necessary, if not sufficient, source of Christian self-understanding. What is commended by this foundational engagement is a hope-filled ‘waiting on grace’ made possible by virtues of empathy and patience. A theology of dialogue focuses not on metaphysical abstractions but on biblical forms of thought about God’s presence to human beings which Christians share with Jews and, under the continuing guidance of the Spirit of Christ, learn to adapt to a whole range of contested cultural and political contexts.

Streszczenie:
What do you do when you’re not asleep and when you’re not eating? You’re most likely waiting—to finish work, to get home, to finish your chores. This book is not really about how to manage all that waiting—“an action,” according to the OED, “of staying where one is until a particular time or event.” It’s a book describing how many people experience waiting. Waiting, which is sculpted by the passing of time, is an experience just as much as it is a situation. In this book I’ll be focusing on the experience, on how it feels to wait. This experience can encompass such things as hesitation and curiosity, dithering and procrastination, hunting and being hunted, fearing and being feared, dread and illness, courting and parenting, anticipation and excitement, listening to and even performing music, being religious, being happy or unhappy, being bored and being boring, doing business and making decisions (all of which I’ll discuss). Waiting is also characterized by such brain chemicals as serotonin and dopamine. They enable the experience of waiting and they can even change the way that waiting’s basis, the passing of time, is registered. Waiting, probably the most commonly experienced situation that humans and animals encounter apart from sleep, is the experience that may characterize most interpersonal relations.

Information modeling technology--the open representation of information for database and other computing applications--has grown significantly in recent years as the need for universal systems of information coding has steadily increased. EXPRESS is a particularly successful ISO International Standard language family for object-flavored information modeling. This cogent introduction to EXPRESS provides numerous, detailed examples of the language family's applicability to a diverse range of endeavors, including mechanical engineering, petroleum exploration, stock exchange asset management, and the human genome project. The book also examines the history, practicalities, and implications of information modeling in general, and considers the vagaries of normal language that necessitate precise communication methods. This first-ever guide to information modeling and EXPRESS offers invaluable advice based on years of practical experience. It will be the introduction that students as well as information and data modeling professionals have been waiting for.

The rise of comparative constitutional studies has made our world much smaller and more accessible than ever before. We are in an era of unprecedented interest in understanding and learning from others as individuals and institutions invest enormous amounts of time and resources into facilitating cross-national exchange and education in constitutional law. Yet some parts of the globe are still waiting to be discovered. With few exceptions, the Caribbean has remained understudied and underappreciated outside of the region itself. Not only on its own terms as a part of the larger world, but for how the lived experiences of the countries in the region can help illuminate new and productive approaches to challenges facing constitutional democracies across the globe. This book begins to fill the enormous void in our comparative knowledge of the constitutional systems of the world. The Caribbean is home not only to many different constitutional systems, but also to different traditions of constitutionalism, making it more appropriate to speak of the various Caribbean constitutionalisms. The book seeks to both inform readers about these traditions of constitutionalism and to illuminate their implications for constitutional adjudication, evolution, interpretation, and reform. What results is a rich diversity of historical and modern constitutional experience that puts an end, once and for all, to the conventional misunderstanding of Caribbean constitutions as being one and the same.

After years of research and reflection on the work of the interdisciplinary family justice system this book offers a fresh approach to supporting the thousands of children every year who experience a complex form of bereavement following parental separation and divorce. This stressful family change, combined with the loss of support due to austerity cuts, can damage their education, well-being, mental health, and long-term life chances. This book argues for early preventative intervention which responds to children's worries when they first present them, without waiting until things have gone badly wrong. The book's radical proposals for reform involve a much more coordinated and joined-up approach by schools, the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. This book encourages practitioners and academics to look outside their professional silos and to see the world through the eyes of children in crisis to enable services to offer direct support in a manner and at a time when it is most needed.

Warnes, Andrew. How the Shopping Cart Explains Global Consumerism. University of California Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1525/california/9780520295285.001.0001.

Streszczenie:
The book argues that the invention and popularization of the shopping cart from the 1940s onward provided the final link in the chain for the new system of industrialized food flow. First in the United States and then around the world, these carts enabled supermarkets to move their goods even faster off their shelves—in a sense, completing the revolution in mechanized farming, electric refrigeration, and road distribution that had occurred during the 1930s. Yet the cart, a basic machine among modernity’s new systems, also recast the work of food shopping in ways that attracted ambivalence and unease. In urging customers to buy all their groceries at once, it radically accelerated the consumerist experience of self-service, creating a new mode of accelerated shopping on impulse that often felt, ironically, far from “convenient.” Above all, as a host of U.S. cultural responses have suggested, the sheer uniformity of the shopping cart has unsettled the individualistic rhetoric of the supermarket industry. Increasingly omnipresent in online shopping, its basic form, defined as a void waiting to be filled, uncomfortably reveals the parallels that exist between human and nonhuman participants in the modern circuit of food flow.

Publishing a scientific article is not a simple task. You may ultimately have to publish a paper to either take scientific grants or take a Ph.D. or master's degree, so it is to your advantage to keep all the necessary steps in your hands. First and foremost, when you are asked to write such a paper, it is essential to organize your ideas in a way that is convenient for submitting a manuscript for consideration in an appropriate journal. Everyone who has submitted a manuscript in a scientific journal has had the frustrating experience of spending a long time writing the manuscript and waiting for the journal feedback, only to discover at the end that your article is not good enough for publication in that journal. Therefore, the task wouldn't end if the manuscript weren't accepted for publication, following a long peer-review process. However, you have no idea how to be successful in publishing your article? Calm down! There are several reasons for using this guide. This work was designed exactly to help you, casually, but with much content. All the authors' experience is shared here, with tips and recommendations to save you from frequent mistakes and lead you to the fastest and most assertive path. Not only have you the charge of contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge, but also to publish your research with responsibility. Publishing your article will not be easy, but it would be nice and less complicated if you came with us to build it up.

This chapter examines Taika Waititi’s hit film Boy as evidence of a shift in Māori filmmaking away from the ideals of the “Fourth Cinema” of the 1980s – that is, a purely indigenous type of representation in terms of content and form – to a new kind that is based on an acceptance of cultural hybridity and an awareness of, and receptivity to, global youth culture. In terms of the coming-of-age experience depicted in the film, the discussion links it to that which is shown in Tamahori’s Once Were Warriors, but identifies strategies Waititi adopts to palliate the representation by overlaying it with a comedic approach so as to make the spectator’s experience of the trauma to which the characters are responding more bearable.

What does it mean for someone to be ‘trans’? What are the implications of this for healthcare provision? Drawing on the findings of an extensive research project, this book addresses urgent challenges and debates in trans health. It interweaves patient voices with social theory and autobiography, offering an innovative look at how shifting language, patient mistrust, waiting lists and professional power shape clinical encounters, and exploring what a better future might look like for trans patients. These book aims to uncover how trans identities and experiences, along with conceptualisations of trans health, are understood in multiple contexts. The purpose is to grasp the social processes at play in encounters where trans patients feel marginalised, misunderstood, and/or discriminated against.

The virtues of the profession of engineering are extolled. The views of one of the greatest electrical engineers (Rudolf Kompfner) of the last century are quoted as follows: “The feeling one experiences when he obtains a new important insight when a crucial experiment works, when an idea begins to grow and bear fruit, these mental states are indescribably beautiful and exciting. Nomaterial reward can produce effects even distantly approaching them. Yet another benefit is that an inventor can never be bored. There is no time when I cannot think of a variety of problems. All waiting to be speculated about, perhaps tackled, perhaps solved. All one has to do is to ask the questions, why? How? And not be content with the easy, the superficial answer.”

Streszczenie:
This book aims to empower readers to learn and apply engineering, operations research, and modeling techniques to improve public health programs and healthcare systems. Readers will engage in in-depth study of disease detection and control strategies from a “systems science” perspective, which involves the use of common engineering, operations research, and mathematical modeling techniques such as optimization, queuing theory, Markov and Kermack-McKendrick models, and microsimulation. Chapters focus on applying these techniques to classical public health dilemmas such as how to optimize screening programs, reduce waiting times for healthcare services, solve resource allocation problems, and compare macroscale disease control strategies that cannot be easily evaluated through standard public health methods such as randomized trials or cohort studies. The book is organized around solving real-world problems, typically derived from actual experiences by staff at nongovernmental organizations, departments of public health, and international health agencies. In addition to teaching the theory behind modeling methods, the book aims to confer practical skills to readers through practice in model implementation using the statistical software R.

Remaking Muslim Lives: Everyday Islam in Postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina examines what it means to live a Muslim life amid the political ruptures, economic deprivation, and transformation of religious institutions in postsocialist, postwar Bosnia-Herzegovina. Popular representations of Muslim communities in Southeastern Europe have long featured simplistic images of Muslims’ lost faith, and of Islam as serving the interests of nationalism and identity politics. Drawing on a decade of ethnographic research, this book challenges these stereotypes. Through an exploration of the everyday experiences of several generations of Muslim men and women and against the backdrop of the turbulent postsocialist and postwar transformations, David Henig shows how living a Muslim life in rural Bosnia and Herzegovina is ordered and inscribed by deep relations of obligation and care with the living, the dead, and the divine that spans generations. His evocative study traces the manifestations of these relations from the intimate spheres of houses and village neighborhoods to the waiting room of an Islamic dream healer, from village mosques and outdoor prayers for rain to the “little Hajj” pilgrimage and commemorative sites for the Ottoman martyrs and those of the recent Bosnian war. This study makes a powerful contribution to our understanding of how religion and historical consciousness, interlocked through the rubric of exchange, is actively engaged to make sense of past tumultuous experiences and future-oriented expectations in the present.

Early June begins the Southern Hemisphere hurricane season. Stretching into November, it can often be a time of weary waiting and cautious optimism for coastal residents. Clear skies and calm seas can quickly give way to disaster. On August 27, 2017, a Category 4 hurricane (Harvey), targeting the Texas Gulf Coast and packing winds of over 130 miles per hour, wreaked havoc and created a path of destruction with bands of rain that seemingly went on forever. Lives were lost, neighborhoods devastated, resiliency cracked; yet people continued helping each other, and the recovery process began. Fitzpatrick and Spialek tell a complicated story of heartache, destruction, resiliency, recovery, and hope. Through over 300 interviews from Hurricane Harvey survivors living along the Texas Gulf Coast, their stories tell an all-too-familiar tale. Interviewing survivors with diverse displacement experiences, the authors create a narrative around who, what, where, and why residents sought refuge in shelters, hotels, and other alternative locations. Some residents have since moved back. Others have been rebuilding for months and even years. And there are some residents who will never return home. Their stories, circumstances, and insight into the recovery processes are all very different, yet intimately tied together through an understanding of how race and place come to define their experiences. This book tells survivors’ stories while emphasizing that who those survivors were and where they lived had a major impact on these tales of destruction, resiliency, and recovery.

In 1992 the Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand and Polynesia, which owed its origin ultimately to the work of Samuel Marsden and other missionaries, undertook a globally unprecedented project to redeem its inglorious colonial past, especially with respect to its treatment of indigenous Maori Anglicans. In this chapter Te Paa Daniel, an indigenous Anglican laywoman, explores the history of her Provincial Church in the Antipodes, outlining the facts of history, including the relationship with the Treaty of Waitangi, the period under Selwyn’s leadership, as experienced and understood from the perspective of Maori Anglicans. The chapter thus brings into view the events that informed and influenced the radical and globally unprecedented Constitutional Revision of 1992 which saw the creation of the partnership between different cultural jurisdictions (tikanga).
