Streszczenie:
This paper examines turbo codes that are currently introduced in many international standards, including the UMTS standard for third generation personal communications and the ETSI DVB-T standard for Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting. The convergence properties of the iterative decoding process associated with a given turbo-coding scheme are estimated using the analysis technique based on so-called extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart. This approach provides a possibility to anticipate the bit error rate (BER) of a turbo code system using only the EXIT chart. It is shown that EXIT charts are powerful tools to analyze and optimize the convergence behavior of iterative systems utilizing the turbo principle. The idea is to consider the associated SISO stages as information processors that map input a priori LLR’s onto output extrinsic LLR’s, the information content being obviously assumed to increase from input to output, and introduce them to the design of turbo systems without the reliance on extensive simulation. Compared with the other methods for generating EXIT functions, the suggested approach provides insight into the iterative behavior of linear turbo systems with substantial reduction in numerical complexity.

In this paper, the performance of the Unpunctured Turbo Trellis-Coded Modulation (UTTCM) over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel is analyzed using the non-binary extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart. The exchange of the extrinsic information between the decoder components is tracked, allowing the generation of an EXIT chart, which is a powerful tool for analyzing the convergence behavior of iterative decoding and prediction of convergence position. The Simulation results are compared with the turbo cliff positions on the BER curves.

The optimization of degree profiles of low-density parity-check (LDPC) code in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) multiple access channel (MAC) by fitting the transfer characteristics of variable nodes detector (VND) and that of check nodes detector (CND) is discussed. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) characteristics are used for determining the degree profiles based on curve fitting. The convergence the optimized LDPC code is ensured by the EXIT characteristics of VND and CND. Degree profiles are obtained and check matrix is constructed. Simulation results show that the method is variable in designing LDPC code degree profiles in MAC with reduced complexity compared with density evolution based on Gaussian approximation.

Streszczenie:
In the modern era where highly-commodified cultural products compete heavily for mass consumption, finding the principles behind the complex process of how successful, “hit” products emerge remains a vital scientific goal that requires an interdisciplinary approach. Here, we present a framework for tracing the cycle of prosperity-and-decline of a product to find insights into influential and potent factors that determine its success. As a rapid, high-throughput indicator of the preference of the public, popularity charts have emerged as a useful information source for finding the market performance patterns of products over time, which we call the on-chart life trajectories that show how the products enter the chart, fare inside it, and eventually exit from it. We propose quantitative parameters to characterize a life trajectory, and analyze a large-scale data set of nearly 7,000 songs from Gaon Chart, a major weekly Korean Pop (K-Pop) chart that covers a span of six years. We find that a significant role is played by nonmusical extrinsic factors such as the established fan base of the artist and the might of production companies in the on-chart success of songs, strongly indicative of the commodified nature of modern cultural products. We also review a possible mathematical model of this phenomenon, and discuss several nontrivial yet intriguing trajectories that we call the “Late Bloomers” and the “Re-entrants” that appear to be strongly driven by serendipitous exposure on mass media and the changes of seasons.

Streszczenie:
Large-scale patterns of culture change may be explained by models of self organized criticality, or alternatively, by multiplicative processes. We speculate that popular album activity may be similar to critical models of extinction in that interconnected agents compete to survive within a limited space. Here we investigate whether popular music albums as listed on popular album charts display evidence of self-organized criticality, including a self-affine time series of activity and power-law distributions of lifetimes and exit activity in the chart. We find it difficult to distinguish between multiplicative growth and critical model hypotheses for these data. However, aspects of criticality may be masked by the selective sampling that a "Top 200" listing necessarily implies.

Streszczenie:
In the paper, we investigate LDPC-coded differential amplitude/phase modulation (APM) schemes for correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Through the observation for the mutual information of the extrinsic log-likelihood ratio (LLR) values of the variable nodes in the LDPC decoder, it is found that the code design methods investigated in the previous literature loses their accuracy. Consequently, a modified code design method for the outer LDPC code is proposed in this paper. It is shown that the searched LDPC code effectively improves the error performance, when compared to the convolutional-coded scheme investigated in the previous literature.

Streszczenie:
This paper examines turbo codes that are currently introduced in many international standards and implemented in numerous advanced communication systems, and evaluates the process of extrinsic information transfer (EXIT). The convergence properties of the iterative decoding process, associated with a given turbo-coding scheme, are estimated using the analysis technique based on so-called extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts. This approach provides a possibility to predict the bit-error rate (BER) of a turbo code system with only the extrinsic information transfer chart. It is shown that extrinsic information transfer charts are powerful tools to analyze and optimize the convergence behavior of iterative systems utilizing the turbo principle, i.e., systems exchanging and refining extrinsic information. The idea is to consider the associated soft-input soft-output (SISO) stages as information processors, which map input a priori log likelihood ratios (LLRs) onto output extrinsic LLRs, the information content being obviously assumed to increase from input to output, and introduce them to the design of turbo systems without the reliance on extensive simulation. Compared with the other methods for generating extrinsic information transfer functions, the suggested approach provides insight into the iterative behavior of linear turbo systems with substantial reduction in numerical complexity.

Streszczenie:
Pilot cold rolling mill is the important tool for the cold rolling process researching and new steel grade development. According to the design of the new type direct pulling pilot cold rolling mill, based on the mass flow constant principle, strip exit thickness indirect measurement method is studied. During rolling, strip entry and exit speed can be calculated accurately according to the measured value of two sides’ clamps movement. Data filtering treatment is adopted and program flow chart is designed. Based on the material entry thickness measured manually, exit thickness of all passes can be measured indirectly. This thickness indirect measurement method has been applied successfully on the new type pilot cold rolling mill, and the measurement results show that this method has a good accuracy.

Streszczenie:
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the feasibility of a protocol using combined magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), clinical data, and electroencephalogram (EEG) to identify neonates with mild neonatal encephalopathy (NE) treated with therapeutic hypothermia (TH) who are eligible for “early exit”. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of TH cases at a single Level III NICU over a 5-year period was used to describe the demographic, clinical, and outcome data in neonates that received early exit in contrast to 72 hour TH treatment. RESULTS: Two hundred and eight TH cases, including 18 early exit cases (9%) and 9 cases (4%) evaluated for early exit with MRI but continued on 72 hours of TH, were identified. Early exit and 72 hour treatment groups did not differ in demographics or cord gas measures, although early exit neonates had a shorter length of stay (p < 0.05). Consistent with the early exit protocol, no early exit infants had evidence of moderate or severe encephalopathy on EEG or evidence of hypoxic ischemic injury on MRI at 24 hours of life. Neurology follow up between age 1 and 18 months was available for 10 early exit infants, 8 of whom had a normal examination. CONCLUSIONS: Early MRI at 24 hours of age, alongside clinical and EEG criteria, is feasible as part of a protocol to identify neonates eligible for early exit from therapeutic hypothermia.
