Pełny tekst źródłaEvent management is a very competitive field; therefore, event managers must work hard to distinguish themselves from other event management companies. One way of doing this is by using event management software to provide a holistic service which allows for better efficiency in the workplace. Technology is constantly changing; therefore it is imperative to keep abreast of trends in technology in order to improve one’s business and services. As an event manager, one should also consider what it takes in order to organise a successful event. The internationally accredited Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) has identified several areas that are crucial for an event manager to constantly control and manage in order to create an exceptional event, and these domain areas encompass a set of guidelines to ensure successful event projects. However, one should determine if the software is able to assist event managers with all the necessary features and functions required to organise a successful event as per the outline from EMBOK. The research aimed to analyse the software in terms of its capabilities and compare it to the EMBOK guidelines. The aim of the study was to further identify whether the software is able to complete all the tasks outlined by EMBOK and if not, what else would be needed to fill the gaps. The research also reviewed what impact the software has on events, that is, how it assists or improves tasks conducted or how it does not assist or becomes problematic in accomplishing the various phases and tasks. Qualitative research was selected as the appropriate method in order to gain an understanding of the events managers’ point of view with regards to the software. The research required detailed descriptions and narratives of the software as well as the experiences and opinions of the user. For this reason it was determined that qualitative research would best suit the needs of the research. In order to get detailed answers a semi-structured in-depth interview guide was used and the answers transcribed in order to analyse and get results. The software was selected based on its international usability and because of its use by South African government departments such as the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRC) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The Cape Town-based individuals from the software’s client list were contacted and selected to participate in the study. The research was conducted with five representatives with previous experience of the software in the events industry in Cape Town. The interview guides were compiled with Likert-scale questions and open-ended questions. The questions were carefully compiled to link the functionality of the software and the criteria as identified by EMBOK. The answers were recorded and transcribed to analyse and determine the opinions of the representatives on the functionality and comprehensiveness of the software to be used for event management. The interviews established that the move towards technology is preferable as it creates efficiency in the workplace. The software assists in alleviating the workload of event managers; however, the interviews also indicated that the software does not always fulfil the requirements for all the tasks. Several tasks required the use of combinations of software; in some instances, the manager preferred to do the task manually. It was concluded that the software does not provide the level of flexibility required in event management, which is a vital criterion, owing to the field’s changing nature.

This thesis project explores the possibility to apply project management techniques, specifically critical path method, and PERT, to supply chain event management. The idea behind the project is to create a framework for putting supply chain events into a broader supply chain context and assessing their criticality. Such a framework can then be utilized as a starting point for supply chain event management software applications. The problem has been approached from a "micro" point of view, with the analysis and PERT modeling of a single order fulfillment process, and from a "macro" point of view, with the analysis and a very simple model of the inventory itself. Finally, there are important factors that can drive the development and adoption of such systems in the future, including a higher level of supply chain informatization, removal of inter-and intra-company communication barriers, and better software integration technologies to effectively link all the element of the supply chain network.

Pełny tekst źródłaOrganizations of all types and their computer networks are constantly under threat of attack. While the overall detection time of these attacks is getting shorter, the average detection time of weeks to months allows the attacker ample time to potentially cause damage to the organization. Current detection methods are primarily signature based and typically rely on analyzing the available data sources in isolation. Any analysis of how the individual data sources relate to each other is usually a manual process, and will most likely occur as a forensic endeavor after the attack identification occurs via other means. The use of graph theory and the graph databases built to support its application can provide a repeatable and automated analysis of the data sources and their relationships. By aggregating the individual data sources into a graph database based on a model that supports the data types and relationships, database queries can extract information relevant to the detection of attack behavior within the network. The work in this Praxis shows how the graph model and database queries will reduce the overall time to detection of a successful attack by enabling defenders to understand better how the data elements and what they represent are related.

Increased operational demands on Navy vessels extend time at sea and service life, making the accurate prediction of catastrophic failures increasingly challenging. The high value of these capital assets puts great pressure on designers and decision-makers as they work towards preventing such failures while balancing both engineering and material cost. The current method for the quantification of extreme events is direct Monte Carlo simulation supplemented by complex statistical models. When such models are not sufficiently bound by physics-based simulation, the noise of statistical uncertainty quickly overpowers the response predictions for rare events. This thesis builds on previous work at the MIT Stochastic Analysis and Non-linear Dynamics (SAND) lab for the quantification of extreme events using wave groups. By separating the event probability from the physics models, we are able to capture rare events in ship motion and loading conditions for a modest computational cost. Improvements to the wave groups methodology ensured the slope and amplitude of the incident waves reflected the waves encountered in a given wave spectrum. The remaining discussion explores the value of a near-real-time risk analysis tools in reference to ship design and ship operations, with unique application to Navy and commercial vessels.

Pełny tekst źródłaCybersecurity event management is critical to the successful accomplishment of an organization’s mission. To put it in perspective, in 2016 Symantec tracked over 700 global adversaries and recorded events from 98 million sensors (Aimoto et al., 2017). Studies show that in 2015, more than 55% of the cyberattacks on government operation centers were due to negligence and the lack of skilled personnel to perform network security duties including the failure to properly identify events (Ponemon, 2015a). Practitioners are charged to perform as first responders to any event that affects the network. Inconsistencies and errors that occur at this level can determine the outcome of an event.
In a time when 91% of Americans believe they have lost control over how information is collected and secured, there is nothing more dangerous than thinking new technology is not vulnerable to attacks (Rainie, 2016). Assailants target those with weak security postures who are unprepared, distracted or lack fundamental elements to identify significant events and secure the environment.
Under executive order, to address these concerns organizations such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and International Organization of Standards (ISO) developed cybersecurity frameworks, which have been widely accepted as industry standards. These standards focus on business drivers to guide cybersecurity activities and risks within critical infrastructure. It outlines a set of cybersecurity activities, references, and outcomes that can be used to align its cyber activities with business requirements at a high-level.
This praxis explores the solution provider’s role in and method of securing environments through their event management practices. Solution providers are a critical piece of proper event management. They are often contracted to provide solutions that adhere to a NIST type framework with little to no guidance. There are supportive documents and guides for event management but nothing substantive like the Cybersecurity Framework and ISO 27001 has been adopted. Using existing processes and protocols an event management framework is proposed that can be utilized to properly manage events and aid solution providers in their cybersecurity mission.
Knowledge of event management was captured through subject matter expertise and supported through literature review and investigation. Statistical methods were used to identify deficiencies in cyber operations that would be worth addressing in an event management framework.

Pełny tekst źródłaMalicious insider activities on military networks can pose a threat to military operations. Early identification of malicious insiders assists in preventing significant damage and reduces the overall insider threat to military networks. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools can be used to identify potential malicious insider activities. SIEM tools provide the ability to normalize and correlate log data from multiple sources on networks. Personnel background investigations and administrative action information can provide data sources for SIEM tools in order to assist in early identification of the insider threat by correlating this information with the individuals online activities. This thesis provides background information on the components and functionality of SIEM tools, summarizes historic insider threat cases to determine common motivations, provides an overview of military security investigations and administrative actions in order to determine candidate sources for SIEM correlation, and provides an overview of common methods of data exfiltration by malicious insiders. This information is then used to develop an example SIEM architecture that highlights how the military can use a SIEM to identify and prevent potential internal insider threats by correlating an individuals network activities with background investigation and administrative action information.

Pełny tekst źródłaENGLISH ABSTRACT: Reflecting a general trend in modern society, the world of sport has become information driven, with effective information management becoming an essential part of all sports organisations and sporting activities. The sophistication oflarge, multi-sport events - mega-games - such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games demand a high standard of information management to help ensure the smooth running of such events. This is also true of the managing of national teams participating in them. In this thesis a model of an information management system (IMS) is developed for managing certain types of information in such events and the national team participating in them. The model is based on two conceptual frameworks: Intellectual capital, and secondly the information management cycle. The model is then tested using a number of case studies where a specific information management system was used to manage the information of different sports teams and events. The degree to which the information management system was effectively implemented in each case is evaluated and the results used to measure the correctness and accuracy of the model. Lastly suggestions are given as to how the model can be improved in view of the case study findings, and what the future role of information management in sports events may look like in light of the results.
