Pope John Paul II in the encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia called Mary a ‘Woman of the Eucharist’. He pointed out the attitudes that can be described as Eucharistic. This article, using the principle of analogy and maintaining an appropriate balance, shows St. Joseph as a model of the Eucharistic ap- proach of every Christian. The life of Saint Joseph was characterized by deep faith and love for God and man, the ability to hear and receive the word of God and the constant willingness to sacrifice his life in order to be able to fulfill the will of God. All these qualities are needed to participate in the Eucharist in a conscious and active way. These attitudes result from participation in the Eucharist and should shape the life of every Christian. In addition, it should be emphasized that the Church introduced the name of St. Joseph to the Eucharistic prayers and ordered it to be mentioned immediately after Mary. Placing the name of St. Joseph in the most important prayer of the Holy Mass, introduces him to the heart of the Eucharist.

Concerns that arise currently are the development of a culture of hatred, the fading of a culture of love, secularism and social injustice. In the midst of that situation, the Church stands as a concrete manifestation of the face of God's love in the middle of the world. In the Ecclesia de Eucharistia encyclical, John Paul II asserted that the eschatological character emphasize the Christian commitment to the world, especially establish the social life order (cf. EE 20). The Eucharistic dimension of the Eucharist implies that the world order must be transformed as a form of participation towards fulfillment at the end of time. Whereas in the Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis, Benedict XVI, asserted that the Eucharist celebration brings our whole lives into spiritual worship that pleases to God (cf SCar 70). From this research, it is known that the Eucharistic social dimension becomes a spirit of love culture according to the writer. This love culture finds its source and power in the Eucharist. Through the celebration of the Eucharist, people are mystically united with Christ. In the light of the theology of the Eucharistic social dimension of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, mystical union with Christ refers to the oneness of God's thankfulness to the fulfillment of the last days (cf. John 15:13).

The role of the Eucharist in shaping the moral life is enormous and in fact, thanks to the Eucharist, the essence of Christian life can be read. Therefore, it is not surprising that Pope Benedict XVI has often addressed the Eucharist in his teachings. In this way, he wanted to deepen and revive the worship of Eucharistic Jesus. In his teachings, he showed the Eucharist as the greatest treasure given to man for shaping the moral life. He constantly reminded us of the obligations arising from the participation in the Eucharist. Because of its specificity, the Eucharist contains moral calls: to sacrifice, to feeding on the bread of life, to praise and giving thanks, and to living in faith and love. Fulfilling all these attitudes and moral calls in everyday life is a way to progress in the Eucharistic life.

The author presents in his article the Eucharist in early centuries of the Church in the light of the most important sources available today. He shows that it is a reality very rich in the theological, liturgical and pastoral aspects. The author analyzes and presents the most important documents such as the Didache. Science of the Twelve Apostles (I/II), Apology of St. Justin Martyr (150), Apostolic Tradition of St. Hippolytus of Rome (215), Records of Martyrs. The martyrs of the Sunday Eucharist in Abitene (304) and Apostolic Constitutions with the so called “klementynian” mass (380), which division into the mass of the catechumens (currently liturgy of the word) and the mass of the faithful (now the liturgy of the Eucharist) survived to the new Roman Missal (1970) edited by the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). Analyzed by the author of this article the most important source of the Eucharistic of the early centuries of the Church (II–IV c), confirms the teaching of pope St. John Paul II (1978–2005), that “the Eucharist, understood as Christ’s saving presence in the community of the faithful and its spiritual food, is the most precious possession which the Church has on the roads of history” (John Paul II, encyclical “Ecclesia de Eucharistia”.

The article is called Sacrament of Eucharist according to “Expositio Symboli Apostolorum” by Johannes Marienwerder. The subject of the analysis is late medieval work of Johannes Marienwerder (Jan z Kwidzyna) (1342–1417) Expositio Symboli Apostolorum (1399–1401). The theme of the Eucharist is interesting for at least two reasons. The late 14th century is the time of extremities: intensification of the postulates of Eucharistic revival and emergence of views which negated Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist. References to a discussion on the subject can be found in Expositio. Second, discussing the views of Johannes Marienwerder on the Eucharist presented in Expositio can provide a supplement for studies of the eucharistic piety of blessed Dorothea of Montau. The following issues are dealt with in this paper. The first section presents the state of debate on the Eucharist in Prague circles in the late 14th century. Postulates of frequent Holy Communion appeared. There were currents negating the Catholic teachings on Eucharist in Prague at the time. The second section discusses the theology of the Eucharist as presented in Expositio. It can be described as a form of apology of the Catholic teachings on the Eucharist. Moreover, the Prologue to Johannes Marienwerder’s work contains a series of brief practical guidelines mainly concerning the celebration of the mass. One should hope that this study will be useful both to theologians and to other scholars who deal with the literary circles of the late Mediaeval Pomesania and also the pre-Hussite period.

AbstractContemporary Christian construals of the Eucharist, both in doctrine and in practice, generally tend to subordinate, de-emphasise or omit theological reference to the Jewish Passover meal. And yet the key New Testament texts in which the Eucharist's institution is variously narrated – the very texts and institution allegedly ‘remembered’ in eucharistic rites – are virtually unintelligible apart from Passover. Thus, at the heart of Christian doctrine and practical life sits a particular theological problem: namely, precisely how to relate the distinctively Jewish character of the Eucharist's origins as narrated in the New Testament to the distinctively Christian character of eucharistic doctrine and liturgy. Drawing on two Jewish thinkers, Michael Fishbane and Yair Zakovitch, in this article I offer one model for understanding the Eucharist–Passover relationship in particular, and the Christian–Jewish relationship generally, as fundamentally typological, performative and ‘subsessionist’. That is, I propose a subsessionist (as opposed to supersessionist) typological understanding of the Eucharist as a Christian rendition of Passover, at once distinct from its Jewish counterparts today and utterly dependent on the ancient Israelite festival for its intelligibility and force. From Fishbane, I draw the idea that throughout the Hebrew Bible, the exodus narrative provides a crucial interpretative key applicable to both prior and anticipated redemptions. From Zakovitch, I draw the idea that the ubiquity of exodus typology in Hebrew scripture may function to create an impression of periodic repetition in salvation history, in effect reassuring Israel that future deliverance will conform to the essential patterns of the prestigious past. The typology at play here, then, so far from being a triumphalist ‘prophecy-fulfilment’ arrangement in which the ‘old’ is valuable only insofar as it serves as a signpost pointing to the ‘new’, is rather a ‘paradigm-rendition’ typology in which the new performance is clarified and authenticated precisely insofar as it corresponds to the old, exalted original. At stake here, I contend, is not only a more fruitful framework for conceiving the relationship between Eucharist and Passover (or indeed between Christianity and Judaism), but also a crucial theological strategy for resisting what amounts to ade factoMarcionism in contemporary Christian communities.

The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. Many faithful celebrate the Eucharist: some experience the Eucharist's impact, but many do not feel the impact of the Eucharist on their daily lives. The Eucharist is the memory of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. He himself is present at the Eucharist. Therefore the Eucharist is a source of grace and blessing to the lives of the faithful: to bring the fruits of redemption and to be the source of life for the faithful; building–living–reviving the Church. The Eucharist is also a source of repentance and forgiveness as well as a source for developing faith, hope, and love. The Eucharist is the offering of Christ and His Church. Therefore, in the Eucharist the faithful offer their entire lives to be transformed into a source of life and blessing for them and the whole world. In the spirit of repentance, the faithful are also called to offer themselves in faith, hope and love. Celebrating the Eucharist and seriously believing its truths will illuminate the daily lives of the faithful and grow in love for the Eucharist, so that they grow in love for God and others in Christ.

The encyclical letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia of Pope John Paul II,which states that the Church lives from the Eucharist, is the essence of the mystery of the Church. The faithfuls live from the Eucharist where Christ himself is present and sacrifices himself for human beings. Thus, the Eucharist is the heart of the life of the Church. Eucharist as communion signifies that it creates a brotherhood and communion among the faithful, who shall be stated in brotherhood with other fellows outside the Church. The Eucharist as memorial signifies that the memories of the work of God’s redemption in His son, Jesus Christ, are actualized here and now so that the work of salvation presented in the Eucharist should energize the daily life of the faithful. Eucharist as celebration of life indicates that the work of the loving God given to mankind invites people to celebrate it along with others who do not know Christ. The mission dimension of the holy Eucharist means that the work of salvation must be carried out by every Christian throughout the world.

Streszczenie:
Since the late 20th century information technology has changed the lives of individuals and relationships at local, nation and even global levels. In particular the internet is used by many religious groups for theological and spiritual purposes. Some parts of Christianity have confronted the issue of how to deal with the use of internet. As a result, an internet church has emerged, offering Eucharistic services online across the globe. Even though the numbers of internet churches/Eucharistic groups have sharply increased in the last two decades, the attitude of the established churches does not appear to have taken account of this change yet. To achieve this it is necessary for such initiatives to be guided by certain theological norms or church regulations. This may relate to the definition of church, Eucharistic theology, or how to deal with emerging cultures. However, no public theological agreement about the development of a cyberspace Eucharist ecumenically, or even within single denominations such as the Methodist church, has yet been achieved. This thesis sets out to explore the possibility of developing of an internet Eucharist within the context of John Wesley’s Eucharistic theology, practice and fervor for communion. Wesley’s Eucharistic theology and practice were not simply his own idea or preference. Rather he derived them from various resources from the early Christian to the period of his own life. He also understood the Eucharist in relation to his own engagement with the changing society of his own time. In this context he developed his Methodist Societies as Eucharistic communities within the understanding of the means of grace: instituted and prudential. This study will not only give justification for the online Eucharist, but will also try to investigate how Wesley’s theology and practice can inform the practice and theology of the online Eucharist.

Streszczenie:
The thesis delineates an existential view of history, in which the eternal is defined as the ground of authentic human life which underlies true historical action. The historical is the manifestation of the eternal in the unique moment, and redefines the ahistorical conditions of human life. The ahistorical is the social and ideological conditioning of all human knowledge, usually presented in terms of various kinds of myth and ritual . The ahistorical contains both good and bad elements, but always has the tendency to become oppressive and is therefore constantly in conflict with the historical. The life of Jesus is described as the perfect expression of the eternal in true historical action, by which he came into conflict with the ahistorical of his society, as expressed in his death. By his resurrection, his life breaks the limitations of time and becomes transformative enabling all subsequent historical action. The eucharist is described as engaging with each of these dimensions of our existence. By being itself a ritual action containing a myth, the eucharist has an ahistorical form and therefore easily engages with the ahistorical dimensions of society. However, without a constant dialogue with the historical, the eucharist, as an ahistorical medium, can become allied to the dominant forces of society and become a means of oppression. The eucharist has at its centre the remembrance of the historical action of Jesus. True historical action in the present will result from a proper hermeneutic of the gospels. The eucharistic anamnesis must be regarded as part of the wider search for a relevant contemporary christology. The eucharist remembers the Last Supper, which is a parable of the whole life of Jesus and a prelude to his death and is a sacrifice in that it has a sacrificial form, and leads to our historical action, which will usually take the form of a conflict with the ahistorical and have sacrificial dimensions. The eternal only becomes present in our historical action, but the eucharist, by uniting us with the transforming power of the death and resurrection of Jesus, is a powerful aid to such action. The eucharist also provides the opportunity for resonances between Jesus and the ground of our being, thus enabling deep shifts of attitude and consciousness. Three fundamental prerequisites for human life are isolated and related to the eucharist: belonging, nurturing and giving. In order for the eucharist to ennable historical action is must hold these dimensions in tension. In its actual form it does this through the balance between the Words of Institution and the Epiclesis, which, in turn, provide the christological ground of the eucharist and relate this to the present through a particular pneumatology. The real presence is described by the thesis in a way which connects the eucharistic presence with the historical Jesus and leads to our historical action. Finally, some consequences of the thesis for Eucharistic practice are suggested. The relationship between the ahistorical form of the eucharist and the anamnesis is important. In this way the eucharist objectifies the ahistorical, reflects on this in terms of the historical action of Jesus, and reforms the ahistorical by modelling a response. This should lead to a more authentic expression of the eternal in the contemporary world

This dissertation argues that the eucharistic theology found in Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologiae is not a Christocentric, static, hierarchical economy of grace production. Rather, it is a deeply Trinitarian, dynamic, communal drama of graced participation. Based on Aquinas's insistence that grace is a participation in the Divine Nature that is signified by the sacraments, I turn to the Secunda Pars in order to explicate the relationship between grace and human action that is presupposed in the sacramentology of the Tertia Pars. Insofar as the res tantum of the Eucharist is the unity of the mystical body of Christ, special attention is given to the relationship between grace, theological virtue, and moral virtue. Through close examination of the process through which charity is said to increase in the subject, the unity of the mystical body is seen, not as a mystical state, but as a graced action that is simultaneously God's action (insofar as grace formally moves us through charity) and the Church's action (insofar as the moral virtues dispose us to receive the presence of God as the extrinsic principle of our actions). The unity of the mystical body of Christ is, then, rightly called the grace of the Eucharist because the spiritual life affected by the Eucharist is the active presence of charity in the Church. The result of the Eucharist is the Church's participation in the Divine Nature. This project aims at providing a grammar that allows for fruitful dialogue in modern sacramental theology. Within Catholic Eucharistic theology, the scholastic language of metaphysics is regularly given place of privilege to such an extent as to view other grammars of the Eucharist with suspicion. This dissertation provides a Thomistic grammar of the Eucharist that largely avoids the traditional scholastic grammars. It is the hope that such retrieval is a catalyst for constructive dialogue between modern grammars (of all denominations) and traditional scholastic grammars

Traditionally, Church teaching has examined the Eucharist in metaphysical terms (‘what is it?’: substance, presence, and causality) and its liturgical celebration as a sacrifice (a re-presentation of Christ’s self-sacrifice on the cross). Prompted by Vatican II’s exhortation to the faithful for ‘full, conscious, active participation’ in the liturgy (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium 14, 27, 30), this dissertation re-interprets the Eucharistic liturgy and participants’ role in it through the root metaphor of gift: a gift of desire, which impacts participants’ desires, relationships, and selfhood. It proposes a ‘relational approach’ to the Eucharist by asking: What is going on ‘relationally’ in the Eucharistic celebration? How might the Eucharist impact our desire, relations, identity? How does or ought the liturgy of the Eucharist concern relationships between the participants and others? What specifically does the Church celebrate in its liturgy of the Eucharist? Louis-Marie Chauvet’s ‘symbolic exchange’ model of the Eucharistic Prayer, when put in conversation with both Jean-Luc Marion’s phenomenology of gift and René Girard’s mimetic theory, yields an understanding of the Eucharist as God’s gracious and scandalous gift of divine desire. The gift is gracious as an embodied expression of divine love, and also scandalous as it challenges recipients’ autonomy with a radical call to charity demanding an existential response. This dissertation upholds Christ’s self-gift as the ultimate decision to love in a perfect reversal of sacrificial violence, which Christians are called to imitate. It emphasizes the liturgy’s structure as a dynamic event of being encountered by God’s gift of himself and reception of this gift through particular responses. This understanding aims to re-appropriate traditional Catholic teaching on the Eucharist in more contemporary terms. It aims to explain how ‘fully conscious and active participation’ in the sacred mysteries occurs, that liturgy and life may be more richly interrelated

This work examines the theological interpretation that the nature of the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Christ ingested by the participants at the Lord’s Table. It proposes that the keys to unlocking the mystery of the Eucharist are reexaminations of the Old Testament typology of the “Bread of the Presence,” and the New Testament patristic understanding of symbol and reality that point to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. These comprehensions serve renewal hermeneutics by advancing Eucharistic theology toward three goals: they provide insights that inform and facilitate our experience of Christ’s Real Presence in the assembly of the Lord’s Table, they call contemporary culture to satisfy their deep longing to experience the Presence of the Living God through Holy Communion, and they recall the hope that Jesus’ prayer in John 17: 20–23 for unity of his one body may be realized.

Heuristically evoking the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist, this chapter undertakes a counterargument to Chapter 1, asserting that anthropology in fact also preserves theology. In proverbial, genealogical, and analogical ways, anthropologists breach the very dome they construct, refracting some “harmful theospheric rays” while reflecting others. Excavating the theistic roots of anthropology’s concepts and practices, most notably its consummate practice of fieldwork, this chapter reveals the ways in which ethnographic immersion essentially betrays loyalty to Enlightenment dictates on reason by endeavoring to immerse the knower in that desired to be known, as well as enable a very theistic pursuit to “know thyself.”

Streszczenie:
In the paper, we present the theological views of the Metropolitan Jovan Zizioulas on chanting in the Liturgy and consider their signifi- cance for the area of Systematic Theology. By examining the relationship between chanting and the iconic nature of the Eucharist, Metropolitan Jovan points to the eschatological origin of Eucharistic chanting, and thus the chanting of the Church as the acceptance of God’s gift. Since the Word of God, hymns, and psalmody originate from the eschaton, church chanting represents an integral part of the event of the “com- munity of saints”, or the “brightness and brilliance of the eschaton” that the Eucharist brings to the liturgical assembly. The knowledge of the doxological spirit of church chanting is a result of one’s openness to ac- cepting God’s gift of salvation, rather than individual strain occurring within biological and religious emotions. As an element of Orthodox Tradition, chanting testifies to a faith that anticipates the resurrection of the body and perceives its church dogmas as arising from human free choice to participate in the way of the Triune God’s existence. With few words directly devoted to church chanting, Metropolitan Jovan Ziziou- las manages to illuminate Eucharistic chanting as a relevant theological topic. This, within contemporary theological thought, opens the pos- sibility for the first time to re-examine the notion of church chanting as a natural, universal, and therefore ontologically insignificant activ- ity of homo religiosus.

In this article we will present thought of Friedrich Schleiermacher, the father of modern Protestant theology and Metropolitan of Pergamon John D. Zizioulas, most brilliant contemporary Orthodox theologian. This article is an attempt to explain the doctrine of the Holy Trinity in relation to the concept of Divine revelation. Schleiermacher intended to show that the doctrine of the Holy Trinity cannot be regarded as a di- rect restatement of revelation. According to him, triadology has no ex- istential consequences. He taught that the doctrine of the Holy Trinity is unnecessary and misleading. Consequently, doctrine was displaced from a position of importance in theological system. Unlike him, for Metropolitan Zizioulas triadology represents the on- tological basis of Christian existence. For Orthodox theology, God’s im- manent life, His existence as Holy Trinity has been totally revealed to us in Christ. Also, Divine revelation cannot be separated from the Church, which is the icon of the Holy Trinity. Participating in the Eucharist, a person also participates in the life of God. Triadology is soteriological, ie. existentially relevant.

Streszczenie:
The theme of the relationship between one and many, translated into the realm of ecclesiology, encompasses a broad spectrum of ques- tions, including the issue of the catholicity of the Church, the question of church unity, issue of primacy and collegiality, the relationship of one and many Churches, etc. As such, this question not only represents an intra-Orthodox concern but also stands as one of the greatest con- temporary challenges in ecumenical dialogue. In order to grasp the es- sence of this issue, it is useful to get an insight into Metropolitan John Zizioulas’ theological perspectives on the link between one and many. This study initially investigates the philosophical elements of this prob- lem, with further discussion on its theological and ecclesiological con- sequences, in accordance with the Metropolitan method. It is notable that the Metropolitan bases his views on the principle of Trinitarian theology and Christology linked to Pneumatology, a connection fur- ther affirmed by the Eucharistic nature of ecclesiology. Thus, the Eucha- rist becomes the hermeneutical key for comprehending this question. Starting from these foundations, the metropolitan, in understanding the relationship between one and many, comes to talk about the catho- licity of the Church, as well as about the relationship between primacy and collegiality, church unity, etc. Finally, the manifestation of unity in God hic et nunc will be highlighted as the main reason for the Met- ropolitan’s insistence on examining this question through the prism of Eucharistic ecclesiology.

The author interprets two forms of figurativeness of the mystical experience – the touch of man with the spiritual world, God, and the experience of amazement at being – by analysing the symbol of the table in contemporary art. The author first identifies the figurativeness of the fragmentary experience contrary to the mystical experience. Subsequently, she examines the mystical table in the icon of the Trinity by Andrei Rublev as a symbol of sacred hospitality and the eucharistic sacrifice. She also examines the icon’s philosophy as a meeting of the human and the transcendent world (Florensky, Trubeckoi, Evdokimov etc.). Finally, she explains the signs of the figurativeness of the mystical semantics of the table in three contemporary paintings (Jakabčic, Podhorský). These include, for example, Christian allusions, visual minimalism, white colour, contemplative immobility, mysterious to paradoxical imaginations, or the expressive-symbolic use of red and blue.

Religious objects in the Middle Ages often have a symbolic meaning. This includes such a little- studied element of the interior, appeared in the XIII century, as the tabernacle: the repository of the Eucharistic gifts. The subject of research in the article is a process of formation of its symbolic function, reflected in the change of forms. The main symbolic meanings in terms of theology and church regulations, as well as in the aspect of the parishioner’s perceptionare defined.
