Streszczenie:
The use of writing strategy across writing levels in a virtual EFL writing course was still rarely found in the literature. To fill this gap, therefore, this current research aims at exploring writing strategy in EFL writing instruction. Informed by a research framework of descriptive case study, university student-writers who regularly attended a virtual academic writing course filled out the online writing strategy inventory (Yang & Plakans, 2012) and submitted the argumentative essays. The findings show that the writing strategy was diverse across levels. At the stage of before drafting the essay, all student-writers reread task requirement and understood the type of essay and organization, searched for valid references, and tried to avoid plagiarism. Moreover, student-writers with higher levels also summarized ideas, analyzed sentences and contents, and made writing plan. At drafting the essay, they double checked the requirement, revised the essay, reread the essay and the sample texts, and provided valid arguments. However, student-writer with lowest level was not used those strategies. At the stage of after drafting, student-writers in all levels applied similar several writing strategies. However, not all of them added new points from sample texts, references, and lecture. To the student-writer with the lowest level, several writing strategies were not applied. This may indicate that student-writers with higher levels have writing awareness to use writing strategy effectively to improve their essay. Then, it can be drawn a conclusion that the more writing strategies used during drafting the essay, the more score and the higher quality of the essay was possibly achieved.

It is known that one of the genres of Kazakh literature, essays, appeared infrequently in the literature of the Soviet era. During the period of independence, within the framework of this genre, events and scenes in the Soviet space were described in detail, by the authors. Writers have used the rational side of the essay genre as a powerful way to analyze an idea in the context of artistic reality. The article analyzes a novel-essay «Kelmes kunder elesi» («The illusion of the past days»), from two books, which is the result of the relationship between the novel and the essay by the outstanding writer Kalihan Iskak. He defines the features and poetic structure of the essay novel based on native literary criticism. The essay novel analyzes how the author writes very eloquently and with a peculiar style about the events he witnessed, as well as about his views and thoughts. Memoirs of Kalikhan Iskak about himself, about his time, about his contemporaries, about the environment in which he grew up, as well as the memories of the inhabitants of his native land, which were collected to create a wonderful piece of art, served as the basis for writing the article. It is argued that the novel-essay of the writer is distinguished by artistic language, poetic narration and a peculiar style. It is analyzed that the novel-essay is a valuable world telling about the tastes of childhood, unforgettable events, ghosts of the days of the people's life, reflecting the abundance of biographical facts and the breadth of the author's ideological channel, enriching Kazakh literature in artistic, genre, thematic, source studies, cognitive terms. The concluding part says that the novel-essay of Kalikhan Yskak «Kelmes kunder elesi» («The illusion of the past days») is a valuable work that has enriched Kazakh literature in artistic, genre, thematic, documentary and cognitive terms.

John Stuart Mill is—surprisingly—a difficult writer. He writes clearly, non-technically, and in a very plain prose which Bertrand Russell once described as a model for philosophers. It is never hard to see what the general drift of the argument is, and never hard to see which side he is on. He is, none the less, a difficult writer because his clarity hides complicated arguments and assumptions which often take a good deal of unpicking. And when we have done that unpicking, the task of analysing the merits and deficiencies of the arguments is still only half completed. This is true of all his work and particularly true of Liberty. It is an essay whose clarity and energy have made it the most popular of all Mill's work. Yet it conceals philosophical, sociological and historical assumptions of a very debatable kind. In his introduction, Mill saysthe object of this essay is to defend one very simple principle, as entitled to govern absolutely the dealings of society with the individual in the way of compulsion and control, whether the means used be legal penalties, or the moral coercion of public opinion (Liberty, 68).

This essay evaluates features in Arundhati Roy’s non-fiction or political essays. Through the course of her works, she opens up a whole spectrum of questions: can fiction and non-fiction occupy a common ground without dissolving their generic differences, does non-fiction become activism if it strays too far away from conventional practices and actively promotes acts of resistance, can writers choose not to take into account the upheavals that they witness, is silence defensible on the grounds that the political is polemical and fiction is subtle? Roy posits that she is a writer creatively engaged in activism rather than a writer-activist who merely professionalizes protest.

Academic essay writing undergoing the process of pre-writing, drafting, responding, revision, editting and post writing showing that it is not a simple activity, therefore it requires techniques or ways to help the writer, especially a beginner writer in expressing one’s ideas to write an academic writing. This study attempted to find out whether outlining could enhance the efficiency for the students to write an academic essay. The responses to the questionnaires distributed to 115 students showed that outlining could make it easier for them to write academic essay writing especially in organising their ideas. The result of product moment computation also confirmed that there was a very positive correlation between the students’ perception on outlining and their academic essay writing achievement. Therefore, it could be suggested that during the prewriting stage the students should be exposed with the process of writing outline so their writing would be more focussed on the topic idea of the thesis statement and topic ideas of the topic sentences with a good development of ideas and sentences in order to get a unified and coherent writing.

Transitivity systems define as a system to explore how language concernes in the overall grammatical resources for construing going on. The ability to realize transitivity systems in argumentative essays is important because by realizing these systems, the writer can explore language in process of doing, sensing, saying activities happened in the real world. Therefore, this study aims to explore the realization of transitivity systems in students’ argumentative essay texts. There are five argumentative essays written by students who have a good quality in writing skill. The findings show that the writers have already realized six process types corresponding with participants and circumstances. By realizing all process types in essay, the readers can experience different world so that they will know the writers’ experience in using language to mark experiential meaning in essays. In this case, the writers mostly asked readers to experience with process of doing by material process. Thus, the writers moved the readers’ attention by showing the experience of stating relation of the participants. The relation was showed in a configuration of being in attributing and identifying the participants. Therefore, the occurrence of other processes as well as participants and circumstances makes the argumentative essay text more alive. Streszczenie:
Defining a new kind of scholar, one who takes a holistic approach to his or her profession, involves examining models of writing that integrate personal and professional parts of one's life. As a vehicle towards holism, the essay is a superb model. It can integrate critical thought and personal expression organically and intelligently, inviting readers in rather than alienating all but a narrow readership. Because personal expression is integral to this model, I briefly examine a historical chronology of theories of epistemology and expressive discourse in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Next, I look at other writing models--therapeutic, philosophical, journal-oriented, and spiritual--for their integration of formative experiences in the writing process. These two contextual explorations lead to a chapter in which I propose my theory of the critical/personal essay as a scholarly vehicle that integrates theory and lived experience. To demonstrate the essay's flexibility and power, I then examine the writing of Nancy Mairs and several nature, medical, spiritual, and pedagogical essayists. Throughout the dissertation, I interweave excerpts from personal experience. These sections anticipate the final chapter, which is a personal essay examining the role of expressive writing and the sacred in my teaching history.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Abstract One of the major features of financial reporting is conservatism. Accounting conservatism is traditionally defined by the adage “anticipate no profit, but anticipate all losses.” Accounting conservatism is manifested in two general but distinct ways. First, conservatism can be unconditional, meaning that the book value of net assets is understated due to predetermined accounting practices (e.g. immediate expensing of research and development expenditures as incurred). Second, conservatism can be conditional, meaning that the book value of assets is written down under sufficiently adverse circumstances, but not up under favorable circumstances (e.g. goodwill impairment rules). This dissertation focuses only on conditional conservatism. The purpose of this dissertation is to increase our understanding of conditional conservatism through three inter-related essays. These essays seek to answer the following research questions: (1) Are standard measures of conditional conservatism affected by the asymmetry in cash flows? (2) How does “bad news” contribute to the persistence of accruals and cash flows? (3) Do firms manage fair value based goodwill write-offs under Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 142 (SFAS 142)? (4) What are the economic consequences of SFAS 142 goodwill write-offs? Collectively, the empirical results of this dissertation further our understanding of the determinants and implications of conditional conservatism. The first essay demonstrates that the asymmetry in cash flows biases standard measures of conditional conservatism. The second and third essays are one of the first to assess conservatism using an individual accrual account, namely, SFAS 142 goodwill write-offs. The second essay examines the reliability of goodwill write-offs, while the third essay provides evidence on the economic consequences of goodwill write-offs. The findings of these two essays are important for the debate on whether fair value measurements in financial statements are appropriate.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation examines the periodical essay as a site for women's political activity in the nineteenth century. I suggest that the essays and articles of well-known writers Fanny Fern, Marie Corelli, and Sarah Grand, and others who are less well-known, such as Ignota and Mary Livermore, together form a significant body of prose non-fiction that highlights women's active involvement in political debate. I focus primarily upon women's contributions to general-interest periodicals---where women were competing for space against a wider variety of male writers---rather than on ladies' magazines or the suffrage press, whose more narrow goals diminish the potency of women's appearance in the press. Much of my study focuses on the British Nineteenth Century and the American North American Review , both of which turned to series of articles and carefully organized groups of essays to showcase women's inclusion in the debate, often summarized as the Woman Question, over women's position in nineteenth-century society. Throughout, I posit that women's publication on topics concerning women's rights constitutes culturally and generically sanctioned political activity. The five chapters represent increasingly specific aspects of this activity. The first positions women's involvement within the press's penchant for diversity. The second argues for a connection between the influential function of the periodical press and the role of women as positive influences on others. While this influence is generally interpreted as purely domestic, I suggest an alternative reading that endorses women's publication in periodicals. The third chapter examines how women play on notions of gender and identity to create viable public voices in the press. In chapter four, I turn my attention to the ways in which women occupy the forum of the periodical to comment on and prescribe male behavior. Finally, in chapter five I discuss the ways women exert their powers to interpret and comment upon p

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Although feedback on writing is researched in the disciplinary context of teaching writing, little research investigates feedback on short-form essay writing. The field of instructional design is also lacking in research on feedback in the teaching of writing. However, research in the field of multimedia learning including the personalization principle (Mayer, 2001) would seem to support providing conversational audio as an alternative to providing written corrective feedback to students who are engaged in the writing process. Even though the field of Rhetoric and Composition and Instructional Design does not offer much research on feedback on short-form writing, the most substantial research base comes from the field of English as a Second Language (ESL). The purpose of this study was two-fold. Firstly, the study explored pre-medical students' perceptions, and achievement on the types of feedback received on their writing assignments. Secondly, the study examined the types of feedback an instructor is more likely to give in the different formats of traditional written versus audio screencast formats. The participants for this study included 1 instructor, who was a subject of analysis, and 31 pre-medical students at a Midwestern university. The study was categorized into three strands. Strand 1 utilized a survey design, Strand 2 utilized a repeated-measure design, and Strand 3 utilized a content analysis design to address the research questions. In Strand 1, the open-ended questions revealed that students liked the feedback via audio screencast as being more personal, but also found written corrective feedback more specific. In addition, a combined feedback approach was evident from the closed-ended questions. In Strand 2, data analysis revealed statistically significant increase in all the students' essay scores except for assignments 1 and 5, in which the traditional written format was utilized. In Strand 3, data analysis revealed that a significantly more direct and indirect corrective feedback comments were given by the instructor on essays when utilizing the traditional written feedback format compared to when feedback via audio screencast was used. Data analysis also revealed that the instructor had a substantially higher usage of rhetorical and social supportive feedback when providing feedback via audio screencast as opposed to the traditional written feedback format. The study contributes to the existing body of literature on audio feedback and written feedback on writing assignments in ESL, and serves as a foundation for writing teachers who are interested in writing in general and feedback on writing assignments. The study suggests that instructional designers can use the findings of this study to guide and inform their decisions about innovative approaches to providing feedback on students writing, which is a vehicle for critical thinking, and synthesis in many content areas.

This essay examines the evolution of my twenty-year interest in the work of Italian nineteenth-century woman writer Neera (pseudonym for Anna Radius Zuccari), an interest that has culminated with the recent publication Nineteenth-Century Italian Women Writers and the Woman Question: The Case of Neera (2021). My attention to this writer has shifted from an initial exploration of the various characteristics of her production to what I now view as the principal lens for interpreting Neera’s role and work: positioning her inside a matrilineal family tree within the Italian literary landscape, one that recognizes the importance of her legacy as literary mother to the numerous Italian women writers that followed. My essay considers Neera’s significance today from this perspective while also reflecting upon evolving critical trends within Italianistica.

This essay begins with a personal insight into the achievements of my grandfather, Rao Sahib K Kothandapani Pillai. Born in 1896 at Andalur Semmangudi village in South India, Kothandapani Pillai is celebrated as the earliest Tamil writer to take the initiative of translating Tolstoy’s works into Tamil. A diplomat who read Tolstoy for pleasure, Kothandapani Pillai translated three stories––Two Old Men’ (‘Dva starika’, 1885), ‘How Much Land Does A Man Need?’ (‘Mnogo li cheloveku zemli nuzhno?’, 1886), and ‘A Lost Opportunity’ (‘Upustish’ ogon’––ne potushish’, 1885)––published in 1932 in Kadhaimanikkovai (Stories from Tolstoy), an academic textbook for primary-school children. The second part of this essay examines my grandfather’s translator-successors who, between 1930-1970, continued to produce Tamil translations of Tolstoy and other authors such as Maksim Gorky, Fedor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov, for Progress and Raduga publishers in Moscow.

This chapter reflects on the political and social contexts in which the essay arises and by which it is determined. Focusing primarily on George Orwell’s writing about the theme of atrocity, but also referring to several other historically important as well as contemporary political writers, the chapter investigates the seeming contradiction in the idea of an essay being political when it is usually expected to be ‘tentative, modest, provisional – anything but absolutist’. This may initially seem like an unsurpassable challenge, but ‘politics’ and ‘good writing, essayistic or not’ are by no means irreconcilable. Indeed, the essayistic, which often provides context and complexity while pushing the writer toward self-scrutiny, can help steer us away from the ‘ignorance’ of firmly holding on to certain political positions as if they were absolute truths. In the hands of good writers, then, the essay can certainly contribute to ‘the large question of how well society is constituted – the question of politics’.

In this project, we were engaged in a highly speculative process, not looking so much for research results or validity, but rather trying to have some actual experience with student writing at Syracuse University across all four years. We looked at three essays from each writer, written across time, in a very rough effort to describe in broad strokes the possible patterns of development across a large group of writers.

Automatic Essay Scoring (AES) is the computer technology that evaluates and scores the written essays, aiming to provide computational models to grade essays automatically or with minimal human involvement. While there are several AES studies in a variety of languages, few of them are focused on the Portuguese language. The main reason is the lack of a corpus with manually graded essays. We create a large corpus with several essays written by Brazilian high school students on an online platform in order to bridge this gap. All of the essays are argumentative and were scored across five competences by experts. Moreover, we conducted an experiment on the created corpus and showed challenges posed by the Portuguese language. Our corpus is publicly available at https://github.com/rafaelanchieta/essay.

The Czech Catholic writer Jan Čep (1902–1974) belonged to the group of authors who built their work on spiritual-religious motifs. Literary critic František Xaver Šalda stated in the bookmark of Čep’s novel The Border of a Shadow (1935) that he is a “poet of death”, namely “a very special, possessing a very special, unusual view of things of life and death”. The language and imagery of his artistic work are based on philosophical-reflexive and meditative lyricism, often with a contemplative overlap. We consider the image of a double home to be one of the key images of Čep’s poetics. Its development can be traced from the author’s juvenile prose work to the latest texts, which are mainly essay-like. In addition to this image, however, in Čep’s work, reflecting on the phenomenon of life and death also appears to be the mainstay, while it is obvious that these entities are very closely related to the image of a double home. In this context, it will be important to observe how the phenomenon of death is depicted in Čep’s only novel The Border of a Shadow.

While Thematic Coherence is a fundamental aspect of essay writing, scoring it is labor-intensive. This issue is often addressed using machine learning algorithms to estimate the score. However, related work is mostly limited to the English language or argumentative essays. Consequently, there is a lack of research on other widely used languages and essay types, such as Brazilian Portuguese and narrative essays. Hence, this paper reports on the findings of a study that aimed to evaluate the value of machine learning algorithms to automatically score the Thematic Coherence of both narratives (n = 400) and argumentative (n = 6567) essays written in Brazilian Portuguese. Expanding on previous studies, this paper evaluated regression models using conventional, feature-based algorithms according to essays’ linguistic features. Overall, we found that Extra Trees was the best performing algorithm, yielding predictions with moderate to strong correlations with human-generated scores. Mainly, those findings expand the literature with evidence on the potential of machine learning to estimate the Thematic Coherence of narrative and argumentative essays, suggest an improved performance for the former type.

Communication skills are very important for engineers, especially when they need to justify professional choices by developing arguments in written documents. Engineering students at Universidad del Norte learn how to write argumentative documents in the second semester. However, when students reach their senior year, their communication skills do not show their previous training. The paper presents preliminary results of a diagnosis of this skill in engineering students of different programs, different semesters and two different universities. The methodology for the diagnosis consisted in asking students to first read documents on a particular subject, and then, in the classroom, to write an argumentative essay about the same topic. All students used computers and submitted their essays digitally. The professors evaluated the essays by using a predefined rubric. Results show the students have a low level in academic writing and argument developing. Few students properly cited their sources and no essay fulfilled the minimum requirements for an argumentative document. Noticeably, even though all students employed word processor software, they did not use grammar or style check features. As a consequence, the research team believes that students may not be familiar with these tools. Additionally, students do not allow time for the text to settle before verifying the document, or they do not correct it before submission. Regarding formal aspects of the argument document, fifty percent of the students do not include a thesis in the introduction. Nonetheless, in most cases the research team identified some statements that could form or be understood as a pseudo-thesis. Essays in general lack evidences and facts to support the arguments. Moreover, most essays did not provide a conclusion where they clearly set the reader in a context and they did not resume the thesis.

Automated essay scoring (AES) is the task of automatically assigning scores (i.e., grades) to written texts. Although AES has been widely studied in the literature (e.g., informational and argumentative essays), specific types of texts still need more attention. Narrative essays are characterized by texts describing personal experiences and stories, either real or fictional. In this work, we describe a study on scoring student essays written in Portuguese under the aspect of Formal Register, which evaluates aspects related to the use of Brazilian Portuguese formal grammar and proficiency. The dataset created in this study provides a rich corpus of narrative essays produced in the context of a motivational situation, with a diverse set of language proficiency levels annotated by two professional graders. Different machine learning algorithms were evaluated using a diverse set of handcrafted linguistic features, and their results were compared against manual scores by the two human annotators. The results of the proposed analysis demonstrated that the AES model proposed achieved an equivalent agreement to that of the two human annotators.

The purpose of the research is to outline the structure of the main methodological ideas within the frames of interpretive thinking in the essay of the famous Vistnyk’s writer, critic and essayist Yevhen Malaniuk. Considering the purpose and tasks of the studio, an interdisciplinary methodological base, related to the author’s “national approach”, has been worked out. The epistemological potential of national philosophy as a philosophy of national existence, national science as a theory of nation, hermeneutics as a theory and practice of interpretation and post-colonialism as interpretation of cultural phenomena from the standpoint of anti- and post-imperial consciousness are used in the work. The scientific novelty is that on the basis of the previous hermeneutic generalization and definition of national-existential methodology, a propaedeutic outlining of the structure of national-philosophical concepts within the frames of the essayistic interpretation of reality in Ye. Malaniuk is proposed. In the methodological sense, the writer’s essayism is structured by such concepts as nation-centrism, idealism, voluntarism, heroism, and can be considered as one of the variants (close by the experiences of D. Dontsov, Yu. Lypa, M. Mukhyn, etc.) of the Vistnyk’s national-philosophical (national-existential, nationalistic or nation-centric) hermeneutics, that is, the way of understanding, which the author by himself outlined as a “national approach”. The support of Ye. Malaniuk as a culture-philosopher and exegete on the eternal nation-centric values and criteria in his essayistic studies makes his reflections not only historically interesting, but also theoretically productive, classically important for the development of modern Ukrainian hermeneutics and humanities in general.

In the article on the material of the Salzburg weekly «New Days» (1945–1947) various spheres of activity of Peter Volyniak are presented. It is noted that this edition was a business card of the publishing house of the same name and had a history of continuation: in Toronto Petro Volyniak restored the publishing house of the same name and continued the publication in the format of the universal monthly «New Days» (1950–1969). The article also presents periodicals («Latest News», «New Days», «Timpani», «Our Way») and literary, artistic and scientific collection «Steering Wheel», which were published in the Salzburg publishing house of Peter Volyniak «New Days». The purpose of the publication is to trace the path of Petro Volyniak from a writer to a literary critic, journalist and publisher. This trend is reproduced in chronological order. Peter Volyniak as a writer is informed in the article «Literary Evening of P. Volyniak» (author – M. Ch-ka). O. Satsyuk’s literary-critical article is devoted to the coverage of ideological and artistic aspects of Petro Volyniak’s collection «The Earth Calls» (Salzburg, 1947). Petro Volyniak as a literary critic is presented in an article devoted to a collection of literary tales by A. Kolomiyets (Salzburg, 1946), which was published by «New Days». Petro Volyniak as a journalist presents the essay «This is our song…». With the help of content analysis it was observed that the text is divided into two parts: the first contains the author’s reflections on the Ukrainian song, its role in the life of the Ukrainian people; in the second, main, Peter Okopny’s activity abroad is presented. The publisher Petro Volyniak in 1947 in a separate publication of the February issue of the weekly summarizes the third year of activity, providing statistics on the publication of periodicals, books, postcards, calendars, various small format materials. The analyzed material demonstrated the experience of combining creative work and commercial activity.

“Are private schools better than public schools?” This ubiquitous debate in low- and middle-income countries is the wrong one to have. The foreword and three essays collected in this Forum each explore how to move past the stuck “public vs. private” binary. Jason Silberstein is a Research Fellow at RISE. His foreword is titled “A Shift in Perspective: Zooming Out from School Type and Bringing Neighborhood Education Systems into Focus.” It summarizes the current state of the “public vs. private” debate, outlines an alternative approach focused on neighborhood education systems, and then synthesizes key findings from the other essays. Jishnu Das has conducted decades of research on school systems in low-income countries, including in Zambia, India, and Pakistan. His essay is titled “The Emergence and Consequence of Schooling Markets.” It describes exactly what schooling markets look like in Pakistan, including the incredible variance in school quality in both public and private schools within the same village. Das then reviews the evidence on how to engineer local education markets to improve learning in all schools, including polices that have underdelivered (e.g., vouchers) and more promising policies (e.g., finance and information structured to take advantage of inter-school competition, and a focus on the lowest performing public schools). Das’ research on Pakistan is available through leaps.hks.harvard.edu, which also houses the data and documentation for the project. Lant Pritchett writes from a global lens grounded in his work on systems thinking in education. His essay is titled “Schooling Ain’t Just Learning: Controlling the Means of Producing Citizens.” It observes that governments supply, and families demand, education for many reasons. The academic emphasis on one of these reasons, producing student learning, has underweighted the critical importance of other features of education, in particular the socialization function of schooling, which more persuasively explain patterns of provision of both public school and different kinds of private schools. With this key fact in mind, Pritchett argues that there is a strong liberty case for allowing private schools, but that calls for governments to fund them are either uncompelling or “aggressively missing the point”. Joanna Härmä has done mixed-methods research on private schools across many cities and rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa and India, and has also founded a heavily-subsidized private school in Uttar Pradesh, India. Her essay responds to both Das and Pritchett and is titled “Why We Need to Stop Worrying About People’s Coping Mechanism for the ‘Global Learning Crisis’—Their Preference for Low-Fee Private Schools”. It outlines the different forces behind the rise of low-fee private schools and asserts that both the international development sector and governments have failed to usefully respond. Policy toward these private schools is sometimes overzealous, as seen in regulatory regimes that in practice are mostly used to extract bribes, and at other times overly solicitous, as seen in government subsidies that would usually be better spent improving the worst government schools. Perhaps, Härmä concludes, “we should leave well enough alone.”

The module has two main parts. In Part 1, students learn about a new reforestation program in the fictional country of Nueva Puerta and must debate how to direct the reforestation program: towards poverty alleviation, export production, water protection, or habitat connectivity. In Part 2, students break into small groups to negotiate the placement of PES in a tropical land-use simulation game. The land-use simulation is designed to show students some of the realities and limits of tropical conservation. In the final phase of the exercise, students reflect on their experiences through discussion questions. Optionally, they can write a reflective essay and/or vote which real-world reforestation project they are interested in supporting as a class.
